03 Twin Peaks Art Show

THE FALCON 819 E. Washington St, Suite 2 407.423.3060 Sat, August 3, 8pm Twin Peaks follows an FBI investigation into the murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer. Twin Peaks has an unsettling tone and supernatural features that are consistent with horror films, but its campy, melodramatic portrayal of quirky characters engaged in morally dubious activities reflects a bizarrely comical parody of American soap operas. Artists include: Alex LoCastro, Ava Vaccaro, Brandon Geurts, Cap Blackard, Celeste Brown , David McWhertor, German Lemus, Jessica Law, Kittens of Industry, Kelly Berry, Kristin Frenzel, Plinio Pinto, Rick Kamla, Robby Laudati, Sam Schulz and many more.

07 Peek A Boo Bondage Burlesque

Released Fri, August 2, 2013 For the past 12 months, DEA agent Bobby Trench and U.S. naval intelligence officer Marcus Stigman have been reluctantly attached at the hip.Working undercover as members of a narcotics syndicate, each man distrusts his partner as much as the criminals they have both been tasked to take down. When their attempt to infiltrate a Mexican drug cartel and recover millions goes haywire, Trench and Stigman are suddenly disavowed by their superiors. Now that everyone wants them in jail or in the ground, the only person they can count on is the other. Unfortunately for their pursuers, when good guys spend years pretending to be bad, they pick up a few tricks along the way.

Released Wed, August 7 David Burke is a small-time pot dealer whose clientele includes chefs and soccer moms, but no kids—after all, he has his scruples. So what could go wrong? Plenty. Preferring to keep a low profile for obvious reasons, he learns the hard way that no good deed goes unpunished when he tries to help out some local teens and winds up getting jumped by a trio of gutter punks. Stealing his stash and his cash, they leave him in major debt to his supplier, Brad. In order to wipe the slate clean - and maintain a clean bill of health - David must now become a big-time drug smuggler by bringing Brad’s latest shipment in from Mexico. Twisting the arms of his neighbors, cynical stripper Rose and wannabe customer Kenny, and the tatted-and-pierced streetwise teen Casey, he devises a foolproof plan. One fake wife, two pretend kids and a huge, shiny RV later, the “Millers” are headed south of the border for a Fourth of July weekend that is sure to end with a bang.

09 We’re the Millers

Released Fri, August 9 In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. The people of Earth are desperate to escape the planet’s crime and poverty, and they critically need the state-of-the-art medical care available on Elysium - but some in Elysium will stop at nothing to enforce antiimmigration laws and preserve their citizens’ luxurious lifestyle. The only man with the chance bring equality to these worlds is Max, an ordinary guy in desperate need to get to Elysium. With his life hanging in the balance, he reluctantly takes on a dangerous mission - one that pits him against Elysium’s Secretary Delacourt and her hard-line forces - but if he succeeds, he could save not only his own life, but millions of people on Earth as well.

THE BEACHAMTHE SOCIAL//

WHO// THE SOCIAL 54 North Orange Ave 407.246 .1419 www.thesocial.org

Somewhat big sister, little sister venues, the legendary Beacham Theatre and it’s next door WHAT// neighbor The Social have witnessed some of the biggest names in music pass through their doors, rock their stages and do just about everything else in the green room post show! The Social has been going strong for more than 30 years under different names, but made it’s rock and roll mark as The Sapphire in the early '90s and then continuing that reputation as The Social this past decade. Everyone from Kid Rock to Death Cab For Cutie has played the roughly 350 capacity room. It has become Otown’s CBGB’s if you will, and back up that reputation with every cred band that has roamed through town. The Social’s proprietors reopened The Beacham to live music after more than a 15 year hiatus, offering up a concert hall for about 1200 in the heart of Downtown. The late ‘80s into the ‘90s saw bands like The Black Crowes and Primus rock the hall, and more recently acts like The Killers did invite only gigs for lucky fans. The Social is welcoming JARS OF CLAY, THE HIP ABDUCTION, MOBB DEEP, MC CHRIS and more, while The Beacham has a killer Fall line up with CITY and COLOUR, EDWARD SHARPE, BT, BUILT TO SPILL and others. The best part about these venues is that you can dip across the street to Finn Henry’s, The Lodge or Lizzy’s for a pint, or Wall St Plaza for some grub preshow. There used to be a tunnel below Orange Avenue for the old theatre in the 1940’s to escort the actors to their hotel(now offices above Finn’s). Now seeled off, the tunnel and The Beacham basement are rumored to be haunted by dead actors.

THE KINGS OF SUNSHINE We The Kings Return Home for the Summer WHO: WE THE KINGS / THE READY SET / BREATHE CAROLINA WHERE: HOUSE OF BLUES WHEN: Fri, August 30th INFO: HOUSEOFBLUES.com Not every songwriter waking up to clear skies and friendly tides will be inspired to cut a tune about Cheeseburgers. These friendly lads from Bradenton happen to write catchy, pop punk telling familiar stories, with a slightly edgier tone.Their breakout single “CheckYes Juliet” was universally approved on the Warped Tour circuit, followed by the crossover hit “We’ll Be A Dream” with Demi Lovato. Staying consistent in a fickle music forum, The Kings most recent release “Just Keep Breathing” found success on Itunes with almost 200,000 downloads, followed by a successful European tour. So the boys from the Sunshine State, continue their positive trek back home, with their ‘SummerFest’ stop at the House of Blues. We hang with lead man Travis Clark and talk tunes... aXis: So a lot of other bands around the Sunshine State are seeking the same success as the Kings, but with the ever changing music biz, is it possible these days? Travis: For the younger bands that are out there it’s tough, it’s really tough for them to…bands are making records out of their own pocket so, it is tough for labels because they can’t throw a million dollars into an artist anymore, because it is going to be impossible to get it back and so they won’t do that, they’ll just put money into bands that have already made it, to try to get them to the next level. I think there are pros and cons that are in it are that obviously as a band, you are able to spread your music to people outside of where you’re physically at at the moment. So right now I could pick up my phone and post a song and somebody in Japan could hear it within five minutes and that is incredible. So you build this fan base, this army of fans all around the world that you have to eventually tour to go and see; the problem is there are thousands and thousands of bands doing it, so competition is hard. It’s a vicious circle, but I think this time of music that we are living in is going to be talked about for a very long time of how we got out of it. aXis: You guys have traveled the world playing music, but if there was anyone in the world you could have played music with, who would it be? Travis: The Beatles. The Beatles are the reason that my mum started music, she taught me music. She taught me every single Beatles song that she knew, when I wanted to learn how to play guitar. They were so ahead of their time, it was incredible how and why they wrote music. The stuff they wrote about was unique and powerful and it changed to world, they really did. They are a band that can say they changed the world with their music. It’s timeless, that music will be popular forever. They’re the biggest inspiration and they have so many stories, I mean they put out so many songs that every song has a different story and on some recordings you can hear them just hanging out in the background, smoking, or just talking and that’s just…it’s so real, it makes it feel like it really happened and that it wasn’t just some super group that was put together by a huge label, it was just four incredibly talented human beings that had no idea what they were doing, they just did it and it was awesome. So I think to jam with them would be so revealing, maybe not to jam with them but to be a fly on the wall, that would be awesome. aXis: Your ultimate tour support next time around? Travis: My live band tour roster would be Foo Fighters, it would be The Strokes and my third band would be, well I have to do Coldplay, because I just want to sit and watch those guys rock their socks off. We would definitely headline of course. But everyone would leave before we played!

Traditions. They create memories and experiences that bring people together as one.

At the University of Central Florida, traditions have naturally found roots within its athletic programs. Those traditions openly invite the young and old, neighbors and friends, freshman and alumni, to become a part of the large, diverse family that is the UCF Knights. Culpepper’s aims to embrace those conventions and give the UCF community another place to call its own for every generation that walks through the doors. Former Knight’s QB Kyle Israel and fellow alum Tony Comas don’t take their traditions, or their gameday/postgame night’s lightly! Bleeding Black & Gold, they teamed up with UCF household names and industry vets to introduce a new taste and gameday experience on the Boulevard. We spoke with Tony and Kyle about UCF’s newest tradition. TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEWEST VENTURE?

“Culpepper’s concept came to be in the fall of last year when Kyle Israel and Tony Comas were in Columbus, Oh for the UCF @ Ohio State game. We spent the night before the game at Eddie George’s Grill and became enamored with the concept. Eddie George’s Grill has become a staple in Columbus and part of the Gameday tradition. That inspiration led us to create Hospitality Investment Group in Orlando with the vision of bringing some of the rich tradition we saw in Columbus, to the E. Orlando/UCF community, and who better to work with than Mr. UCF himself, Daunte Culpepper.” WHAT TYPE OF TEAM HAVE YOU ASSEMBLED?

“Daunte Culpepper, (of course) was engaged in the collaborative effort. The project would not have been possible without the resources committed by Tony & Tina Jackovich of Chicago, Il. Hospitality Investment Group (HIG) is a collaborative effort of 4 partners who were involved with the Terrace 390 concept in downtown Orlando. Led by Tony Blair, Carey Sobel and of course Tony and Kyle.” DID YOU GUYS HAVE A BUSINESS OR PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH UCF’s and THE NCAA’S ALL TIME TOP RANKED QB?

“There has been an existing relationship between Daunte and Tony dating back to their days at Ocala Vanguard High School. Daunte & Tony shared lots of time together both on the gridiron and the diamond which extended into the collegiate years while both attended UCF.” ANY CONCEPTS YOU CAN REVEAL TO US?

“Culpepper’s is about Tradition. Simply put. Culpepper’s aims to embrace those conventions and give the UCF community another place to call its own for every generation that walks through the doors. We want our guests to experience a true sense of connection with the culture of the university by celebrating its history and looking in anticipation towards its future. Much like the traditions in college towns through out the nation, Culpepper’s will be as much a part of the game day experience as the game itself. We are incorporating a “Tap’s Tuesday” which will showcase our hand selected craft beer collection. Culpepper’s is also bringing back a “Wine Down Wednesday” to the East Orlando community.”

WHAT WILL THE GAMEDAY EXPERIENCE BE LIKE?

“Incredible! We are planning on having our 1500 sq ft covered outdoor patio experience opening this fall. It will feature an outdoor bar, plenty of TV’s, and atmosphere. Our Executive Chef has created a game day menu featuring all your favorites that is sure to appeal to all pallets . We have also partnered with the UCF Alumni Association for two scheduled watch parties when UCF hits the road to Penn State & Louisville. Whether you bleed Black & Gold, Orange & Blue, or Garnet & Gold, our atmosphere, menu, and drink specials do not discriminate. You will never know who you’ll run into here, Daunte is very engaged and is looking forward to being a part of our Game day events!”

OFFER SOME INSIGHT TO YOUR BIZ BACKGROUND?

“Tony & Tina Jackovich as well as Carey Sobel have an interest in The Basement downtown Orlando on the corner of Pine & Magnolia. You may recognize Tony Comas & Kyle Israel as the duo Comas and Kyle & AlumKnight Live on Orlando’s Sports radio airwaves.” NOW AS A UCF FAN & ALUM... 2013 PREDICTIONS?

Kyle: 10-3 with win over USF • Tony: 11-2 with a win over USF & Penn State

SO DAUNTE WAS THE BEST UCF QB EVER, BUT WHO IS BETTER KYLE OR OUR GUY BLAKE BORTLES?

“Blake Bortles, but Kyle does have a championship under his belt as a starting QB.” OFFENSIVE BREAKOUT YEAR ON THE GRIDIRON?

Kyle: Ranell “Speedy” Hall • Tony: Breshard Perriman

DEFENSIVE?

Tony Comas: Clayton Geathers • Kyle Israel: Terrance Plummer

KYLE, BEST GOL STORY?

“During the ‘07 campaign, the night prior to the conference championship game in the team meeting, Coach O’Leary made the whole team stand up and do the Superman dance to “Crank Dat” by Soulja Boy, and even joined in himself the best he could.”

TONY, BEST DAUNTE STORY?

“Sophomore year in High School, I was trying out for QB on the JV football team. There was a lot of talk about this incoming freshman who was going to be vying for the job as well. In walks Daunte Culpepper, I turned to the QB coach and said...so I’m good with moving to WR or DB now...The rest is history.” BEST UCF MEMORY?

into the American Athletic Conference aXismag.com • August 2013

UCF meet Lindsey Duke, presenting the 18th Annual Back to Cool edition of aXis Magazine. The sports blogs have already caught on to the lady behind one of the top rated passers in college ball, Blake Bortles. The Otown locals hit it off at Oviedo High School and now rival ’Bama’s dynamic QB/Model duo’s stats and getting more web hits than that Notre Dame’s linebacker’s ex! Orlando’s aXis Magazine spent a little time with Lindsey cooling off around Lake Claire and Brighthouse Stadium, as we gear up for the Knights inaugural season in the American Athletic Conference! aXis: We believe U Can Finish here, what are you majoring in? Lindsey: I’m majoring in business, hoping to get involved in commercial real estate after school. aXis: Favorite part about being a Golden Knight so far? Lindsey: I really love our campus, there’s always something going on. aXis: Worst part about the Black & Gold? Lindsey: Parking for sure. aXis: You’re somewhat of a local, but if you didn’t decide on UCF, which college was second on your list? Lindsey: Growing up I always thought I’d go to FSU, but ended up deciding on UCF my senior year and I’m glad I did! aXis: It’s safe to say you’re a football fan, but what’s your favorite sport? Lindsey: I’m 100% football! aXis: Can you hold your own in a casual football debate at a local bar? Lindsey: I can... but I try to leave that one to Blake for the most part! aXis: Any advice for Coach O’Leary on the offense this year? Lindsey: Always go for two! aXis: Have you and/or Blake been kicked out of any opposing college frat party’s lately? Lindsey: Nope, not yet.... aXis: So the sport bloggers seem to be fond of you, do you guys enjoy the added publicity as a student athlete relationship? Lindsey: We really try to keep to ourselves so it doesn’t have too much of an effect on us or me as a student. When Blake and I are together, I’m not with ‘the quarterback.’ I’m just with my boyfriend. It still surprises me when people come up to him in public! aXis: How has it helped your status as a local bartender? Lindsey: I would say it helps, because everyone knows him around town. aXis: Favorite player on the Knights this year... non QB! Lindsey: I’d have to go with Joey Grant. He always tags along as a 3rd wheel on our dates. aXis: Any predictions for the 2013 season? Lindsey: Undefeated I hope! aXis: From your FB pix, we see you are a dog lover. If you were a dog what kind of dogs would each of you be? What kind do you think Blake would be? Lindsey: I would be a Golden Retriever and Blake would definitely be a Bullmastiff!

BREWSCHOOL...

New Belgium (based out of Fort Collins, Denver) hits the Florida markets; finally! So what’s the big deal about New Belgium? Give us the scoop… Oh, New Belgium, we’ve waited months, if not years for your arrival in the great Sunshine state! Go back to Belgium, 1989, boy on a bike; okay, more like a man on a bike… on ‘Fat Tires’ scowering the mountains for European beers. Fast-forward 3 years to 1991 to Jeff Lebesch and his wife, CEO Kim Jordan in their basement brewing a brown dubbel with earthy undertones named Abbey and a remarkably well-balanced amber, he dubbed ‘Fat Tire’. With the help of his wife who was the first bottler, distributor, sales rep and Peter Bouckaert, a Belgian Brewmaster that worked with Rodenbach, the rest is history.

KEEPING YOU HIP TO THE hops

WELCOME TO OTOWN FAT TIRE... PARK YOUR BIKE & HAVE A BREW with Erika of World of Beer So what are the brews along with the memorable ‘Fat Tire’ that hit Florida like hurricane? Their most recognized beer is their trademark beer, as stated above, as Fat Tire. Fat Tire is an amber ale that has a sense of balance: toasty, biscuit-like malt flavors coasting in equilibrium with hoppy freshness. For you hop lovers, try the Ranger IPA! This india pale ale has citrus and fruity flavors then it is dry hopped with cascade hops to add a strong citrus aroma. If hop isn’t your style, try the wheat: Sunshine Wheat! Sunshine Wheat is an unfiltered wheat beer with tones of coriander and orange peel that settles into a sea of apple and honey. This beer es bueno!

Tell us about some of their Belgium style brews? Then this brew is right up your alley; it’s the New Belgium Tripel. This remarkably smooth and complex beer has a bold hop flavor that gives way to fruity esters of the Belgium yeast. If none of the above suit your fancy- go with their Pale Lager: Shift. Shift pale lager has elements of citrus and soft fruit alongside specialty malts and lager yeast creating a crisp, clean finish. Be sure to stop by your local WOB or watering hole for your New Belgium fix!

This guy doesn’t have fun — and doesn’t want anyone else to, either. To him, a quiet dinner party with a few friends is a raucous party. And he won’t stand for any of it. As far as he’s concerned, quiet hours are around the clock. Oh, and forget about watching TV or listening to some tunes. The guy has supersonic hearing, so if the volume is loud enough for you to hear it, it’s disturbing his peace and quiet.

The Clean Freak

When you first met this roommate, you were thrilled that she seemed to keep the place so neat and tidy. But you’ve quickly learned that there’s no such thing as clean enough in her eyes. If you’re snacking on some chips in the living room, she’s standing by armed with the vacuum to snag any crumbs that may fall. She created an elaborate chore chart the week you moved in, and it includes cleaning tasks you’ve never even heard of. For your birthday, she got you a personalized duster – a notso-subtle reminder of your least favourite of her assignments.

You were so happy for your roommate when, two weeks after you moved in together, she met the guy of her dreams. You just didn’t plan on sharing your place with him, too. Now those two are attached at the hip. He eats, sleeps and showers at your place, which of course means you have higher grocery and utility bills and you have to fight one more person for use of the bathroom. You’d really love to talk to your roommate about it and ask whether they can spend some time at his place for a change, but you can’t get a minute alone with her.

Enough said!

BURNSY FLASHBACK

The Quarterbacks Behind The Quarterbacks

Exploring UCF’s deep, rich history of backup signal-callers who have long suffered from being the program’s most unsung heroes. On September 28, UCF’s young and exciting quarterback, Blake Bortles, is going to have his hands, feet, balls and spine full when he lines up opposite the man who is undoubtedly the most terrifying defensive end in all of college football – South Carolina’s Jadeveon Clowney. (He’ll also have three games before that, but they don’t matter.) Bortles, of course, has already acknowledged this matchup by telling reporters that he’s “not scared” and that they “could tell him that.” Whatever, bro. It’s your massacre and funeral. Naturally, a lot of jokes have been made at Bortles’ expense, such as, “Hey, who is UCF’s backup?” and “No really, who is the backup? I don’t ever follow the team unless the Knights are winning and someone told me they’re going to be good this year.” And joke or not, I like that question, because I’ve always felt that the backup QB has never had his day in the sun at UCF. While I’m am 110% cheering for Bortles to break out, make a huge name for himself and return the Knights to the days when the offense was creative and fun, and not just, “Hey, run left” and “Okay, this time run right,” I’d like to honor some of UCF’s most unsung heroes – the backup QBs. We’ve all either seen or heard the stories about Daunte Culpepper, Ryan Schneider, Vic Penn, Steven Moffet and Kyle Israel, but now it’s time to remember the men with the clipboards, too.

1982 – Jim “Pippy” Furtmiller

Coming out of high school, Jim Furtmiller, AKA Pippy or Pip for his bright red hair and unusually small size for a passer, wasn’t even considered by most schools for a walk-on spot. At 4-foot-1, Pippy didn’t have what most college scouts and recruiters viewed as an acceptable size for any position, let alone QB, but Pippy, who was also a diabetic albino, was determined to prove everyone wrong. After losing a bet, then-UCF coach Sam Weir agreed to give Pippy a spot on the team as the third string QB, but the 18-year old shocked everyone when he quickly jumped to No. 2 on the depth chart when it was revealed that the original backup was an inflatable woman. Pippy never saw a down that season, and the Knights were 0-10.

1984 – Trevor Gunt

The 1984 season was a rocky one for the Knights, as coach Lou Saban quit on the team halfway through their campaign because he was more focused on his career in jazz dance. Jerry Anderson took over the team after Saban’s departure and finished 1-3, which he referred to as “Pretty fucking great if I was a backup catcher.” Trevor Gunt was the team’s backup QB that season and he was referred to by some as the “thirteenth or fourteenth most athletic offensive player on the second team” that season.

1988 – Mick Ballthrower/Charlotte Jones

This was arguably the greatest season in UCF football history, depending on whom you ask, as the Knights were at one point the best team in Div. II after a remarkable win over Troy that included the legendary delay of game caused by the UCF crowd. But not a lot of people remember the other big story of that season, as the strangely named backup QB Mick Ballthrower revealed himself as a woman to all of his teammates after the last game of the season. Senior Charlotte Jones had pulled off an incredible experiment in crossdressing for her sociology thesis, and she would eventually go on to found the first ever all-women football team. Unfortunately, it had zero players.

1993 – Jamal Gershberg

Most people credit Daunte Culpepper as being the first African-American QB in UCF history, and if they were simply referring to starters, they’d be correct. I think. I might be wrong, but who really cares at this point? Anyway, the honor actually belongs to Jamal Hershberg, who also holds the distinction of being UCF’s first Jewish QB. Unlike the previous backups, Jamal was actually plugged into the starting lineup late in the 1993 season, but he had to skip his first and only opportunity to start a college game because it fell on Rosh Chodesh Kislev.

1996 – Franc Auclair

Continuing in a line of backup QBs providing firsts for the UCF program, Franc Auclair was the first ever Frenchman to play college football in the state of Florida. Not that the Florida Gators didn’t spend the entire 1979 season pretending that they were French, am I right really old people who get that hilarious joke? Go ahead and use that one at your next FSU alumni golf tourney.

2001 – Taint Furburg

Like most of the other backups over the years, Taint never really saw the field that much during his four years at UCF, but he does hold the honor of having the all-time highest GPA for a UCF football player. In fact, Taint was invited back two seasons ago to be honored for that longstanding achievement and he accepted, but he was sucked into the engine of a plane while boarding on the tarmac. He is survived by his pet ferrets.

2007 – Sergio Crapsack

Sergio makes this incomplete list because of the fact that he was the first backup QB or player in general to ever be excused from the team. It turns out that he was wanted in connection with a string of cannibalistic murders in Dayton a year earlier, but he was later cleared of all charges when it was revealed that a really bored police officer had made everything up. And that brings us to this year’s backup, Tyler Gabbert, who, unlike the previous backup quarterbacks that I’ve written about, is real. At least I think he is. Someone should probably look into that. - Ashley Burns
