ROCK OUT IN OTOWN!

06 What Wouldstock Jambando

THE BEACHAM 46 N. Orange Ave. 407.246.1419 Sat, December 1, $20 - $35

PLAZA LIVE 425 N. Bumby Ave. 407.228.1220 Sat, December 1, 5pm, $7 - $10 A tribute… with a new twist!! Jambando and The Plaza LIVE present “What Wouldstock Jambando ’79,” asking the question, “What would have happened if THAT festival was held in 1979?” Featuring the music of the bands that may have played at Woodstock if it were held 10 years later, this concert event includes some of the best musicians in Orlando paying tribute to classic artists like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd,Talking Heads, Tom Petty, Steely Dan, Black Sabbath,The Staple Singers, Elvis (yes, he’s still alive and thin in this alternate reality) and many more. After receiving a cease and desist from the producers of Woodstock, Jambando was forced to reimagine the classic festival and created a new tribute,“What Wouldstock Jambando,” annually asking what would have happened if other bands had played under different circumstances. 12+ bands have each chosen a classic artist that would have probably played at the historic festival 10 years later in 1979. This ongoing concept of reimagining the quintesential music festival combined with Jambando’s penchant for putting together affordable, quality entertainment will offer yet another new classic rock experience… the possibilities are endless. Participating Orlando bands this year include The Legendary JC’s, funkUs, Gargamel!, Kaleigh Baker, Paddington Ambush, Sonar,The Outer Toons, Bluelegs, The Goldminers, Bithlo Rising, Daz Voodoo, Nick Landess, BEATLEish, The Simple Cavemen & more as well as the Skull & Bone Band and Green Sunshine, Jambando alum from Tampa, FL..

WHO: SOJA w/ Rootz Underground and Beebs & Her Money Makers WHERE: HOUSE OF BLUES WHEN: Doors open at 8PM. INFO: HOUSEOFBLUES.com • 407-934.2583 Mention folk music to the average listener and the list of usual suspects come to mind: Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Woodie Guthrie, etc.Talk to SOJA lead singer/guitarist Jacob Hemphill, however, and you’ll walk away with a different perspective. Over the course of the past few years, SOJA’s brand of rasta-folk has sold more than 150,000 albums, headlined theaters in more than 15 countries, generated over 20 million+ YouTube views, amassed more than a million Facebook fans, and attracted an almost Grateful Dead-like international fanbase that grows with each tour, with caravans of diehards following them from city to city. Most impressive of all, they’ve accomplished all this on their own. This 7-piece band has spent the past year and a half grinding it out from venue to venue, playing more than 360 dates, including headlining sold-out tours of North and South America, as well as opening for O.A.R. and sharing stages with everyone from Dave Matthews Band to Matisyahu. Finishing up their tour in support of their fourth album, Strength to Survive, an intoxicating mix of hot-rod reggae grooves and urgent, zeitgeist-capturing themes,SOJA is celebrating the end of a huge year for the band at the House of Blues for New Year’s Eve. Jacob Hemphill dropped in to talk about the past few years and what’s ahead. aXis: Welcome to the I-4 corridor, and a two time ‘Blue State!’ You guys are no stranger to the political side of music and life in general? How did growing up in D.C. affect that? Jacob Hemphill: I guess having politics in our faces all the time [had an effect on us.] I’ve been feeling that since we’re so close, we can make a change. D.C. is pretty political so we wanted to be a part of it. aXis: I have heard you compare yourselves to a folk band. How do you define folk in modern music? JH: To me, Rage Against The Machine, Wu -Tang Clan, Sade, Johnny Cash, Bob Marley – they’re all folk artists. There’s no difference between Raekwon saying, ‘I grew up on the crime side, the New York Times side, where staying alive was no jive,’ to Bob Marley saying, ‘Cold ground was my bed last night and rock was my pillow, too,’ to Johnny Cash saying, ‘I know I had it coming, I know I can’t be free, but those people keep on moving (around) and that’s what tortures me.’ Folk is all about storytelling and passing on a legacy. It’s timeless, it’s limitless and it crosses all boundaries. That’s what this band is striving for. It’s a tall order, but we’re making our way. aXis: What do you see as the role of reggae music today in progressive politics? JH: You never really know. Everyone treats reggae differently. Some people think that it’s music to listen to on the beach. It could be anything, but in most areas of the world, reggae is taken very seriously and it’s seen as a way people can express their outrage or their concern or their worries about a crisis. Some people think that [reggae is] music to listen to on the beach, . . . but in most areas of the world, reggae is taken very seriously and it’s seen as a way people can express their outrage . . . about a crisis. We take it like the latter. We think reggae is the perfect music. You turn on the radio today and it is garbage. I don’t know a single person who listens to the radio or who watches MTV or VH1. It’s a great time for reggae because music today is for little kids and reggae is something that is for everyone. It’s what we love. aXis: The theme’s expressed on Strength to Survive seem to emphasize a sense of community that transcends politics and music. Is this your message to the audience? JH: I could go on and on about the horrible damage we’ve done to the earth or the problems that arise when countries compete for money over an imaginary border, but the album has one central theme,” says Hemphill, “and that’s our hope for the world to be one family.” aXis: What were some of the highlights of this past year for the band? JH: We hadn’t played a lot of music festivals that we joined this past summer, with three shows at Bonnaroo and then Wakarusa, along with trips to Europe and South America. Some of the greatest moments though are when I look out in the audience and I see these kids with tears in their eyes, not because I’m singing a love song, but because I’m singing about how the world is dying and we’re the only ones who can stop it, that is huge. I live for that. We played a festival in Brazil in front of 80,000 people, and everybody was singing every word—in English. After one of the songs, I told them, ‘We’re on the road a lot, and people always ask me, “Don’t you ever get homesick? Don’t you miss your family?” I said, ‘It took me awhile to realize this, but this is my home, and you all are my family.

the annual aXis XMAS GUIDE BUY THIS STUFF FOR SOMEONE YOU LOVE... OR REALLY WANT A COOL GIFT IN RETURN! Sure, we’re stereotyping. But the few people who fall into these categories? Man will they be happy. So check out the suggested websites and, as they say, to all a good night.

For the gear junkie... GO PRO WIFI BACPAC ($99)

The Go Pro name has become synonymous with extreme sports photography, and the Wi-Fi BacPac and remote combo kit gives adrenaline lovers even more control over their favorite cameras. Snap the $100 BacPac onto a HD Hero2 and control the camera from a durable, waterproof wrist-ready remote--or a smartphone, tablet, or computer with the Go Pro app--via a peer-to-peer Wi-Fi connection. Even better: you can stream a live view from the camera to those mobile devices, making sure you’re getting just the right shot on the slopes or in the surf, something that’s often been a challenge for tiny, viewfinderdeficient sports cams.

Spy Hawk ($249)

The Spy Hawk is a 3 channel mini glider that comes with a built in FPV (first person view) video system that sends a high quality, 5 megapixel live feed back to the 3.5” LCD screen on the transmitter. It features a state of the art stabilisation system that makes it super easy to fly, with a little practice.

For the music lover...

Griffin Twenty ($99)

The Griffin Twenty streaming audio device turns any Apple AirPort Express into a stereo system. The machine has a simple and elegant design, just a plug for the AirPort Express and a large, friendly white dial for volume. As its name implies, the Twenty has an internal 20-watt amplifier and outputs for left and right stereo speakers, plus a subwoofer. The concept is that the dial controls the volume, while the rest of the interface is taken care of through your iPhone, iPad or computer.

The Cassette To iPod Converter ($79)

This is the device that converts audio tape cassettes into MP3 files and stores them directly onto an iPhone or iPod touch. It accepts most iPhones and iPod touches, and normal or chrome cassette tapes. With its free app, conversion to MP3 is as simple as inserting a cassette, docking an iPhone or iPod touch, and pressing play. Tapes can be listened to using the headphones jack (headphones required) or by connecting its audio output to a stereo system for scanning forward or reverse to select tracks for conversion.

For the naughty (and/or nice)...

Brooklyn BrewShop Beer Making Kit ($49 each)

This reusable, at- home brewing kit includes a one gallon glass fermenter, airlock, tubing, thermometer, tubing clamp, sanitizer packet, stopper and blowoff attachment. Choose from semi-sweet, rich and creamy Chocolate Maple Porter or light and citrusy Grapefruit Honey Ale. Hop to it!

Celebrity Carmen Electra shares her secrets with the Carmen Electra ElectraPole Professional Pole Kit heat up those long winter night and get in shape for a smokin’ hot summer. orlando ®

Well hello, children. It’s Christmas time in Orlando. Can you hear Santa and his elves jingling and jangling through the night sky? I can. And it’s awesome. Especially in Orlando, where Santa calls this town his home away from home. Why does Santa call Orlando his home? Because he’s always at Mako’s. Seriously. He’s always there. It’s pretty ridiculous. Anyway, my favorite thing to do each year is sing the 12 Days of Christmas to the local kids, and I always have a special version for the City Beautiful.

BREWSCHOOL...

KEEPING YOU HIP TO THE hops

BREWS for the Xmas Blues

Spreading the Hops cheer with Erika of

World of Beer UCF WINTER ALE’s for the HOLIDAZE!

So what do you think about all Winter Brews this month, or Holiday Brews? This is my favorite time for craft beer with so many brewer’s putting out their own unique holiday beers its almost impossible to try them all. The exciting part is that nearly every winter seasonal is different in some aspect. Holiday brews can range from fresh green pine flavored IPA’s, Mild caramel and spiced flavored brown ales, to high gravity full bodied brews to keep you warm when it gets cold out. Some flavors to expect in winter ales are cinnamon, vanilla, gingerbread, nutmeg, clove, brown sugar, caramel and more. So, When choosing your holiday beer this year ask your server to help out with all the different choices to make sure you get the right one for you!

Everyone has their holidaze blues, so what holiday brews would you suggest? With so many different styles there is something for everyone! For the hop heads, I suggest Sierra Nevada Celebration which is a fresh hopped IPA that gives off a fresh green piney aroma and flavor with a slight malty backbone, and Boulder Never Summer brewed

for its darker malt characteristics with a nice complex spicy hop profile that is perfect for the cold weather! Moving on to the other side of beer! If your looking for something with a little bit more body and malt try Oskar BluesTen Fidy which is a Russian Imperial Stout brewed for its high gravity, chocolate, and coffee flavors. Last, for the people willing to try something a little different this year I recommend Delirium Noel a nice high gravity, malty belgium ale with complex spice and smooth finish! What makes a good Winter Ale, actually a good ‘Winter Ale?’ This can be answered a couple different ways since there are so many different styles out there. Two things come to mind when I think of Holiday brews. You definitely want a beer that will keep you warm during the cold months. For example, Malty full bodied belgium ales or a big robust Russian Imperial Stout. On the other hand, some will argue that a true winter ale should remind you of your favorite holiday foods or drinks. Most of these will be a maltier ale with flavors of gingerbread, Cinnamon, honey, clove, nutmeg, or any other holiday spice to give the beer that holiday flavor!

While everyone likes a swig of Egg Nog, which sweet brews are comparable? Since traditional egg nog is a sweetened dairy based drink with some added liquor and some holiday spice I would suggest Anderson Valley Winter Solstice. It is a malty Cream Ale made with vanilla beans and nutmeg. It’s High ABV will give off the alcohol taste while the caramel malts pair great with the sweetness of the vanilla beans to give it that dairy or cream flavor while the nutmeg gives a nice complex added touch to this holiday beer.To spice it up a little bit more try adding a cinnamon rim to your glass!

For your NYE celebrating, what are your favorite ‘champagnes of beer’? Well beyond the obvious choice of Miller High Life which is hard to top there are a couple different beers that can give off that champaign mouthfeel for the New Year! The most notable being a collaboration between Weihenstephaner (the worlds 1st Brewery) and Samuel Adams called Infinium. It is technically a Belgian Strong Ale but this sparkling ale holds a ton of similarities to champagne. Some others worth trying are MOA Methode brewed with champagne yeast and Bell’s Sparkling ale.

aXisFIT BADASS of the MONTH

DRINK Looking for something light and different to drink over the holidays. Try a Magners Pear Cider over ice. It is gluten free and a nice change of pace from heavy Christmas Beers.

aXis: How long have you being doing crossfit? Annie: I started doing CrossFit 2 months prior to the CrossFit Games 2009. aXis: What was your prior sports involvement? Annie: I was in Gymnastics for about 8 years, then Ballet, Pole vaulting, Bootcamp and now CrossFit… aXis: How did people around you accept the fact that you are doing crossfit? Did they take a jaundiced view of it? Annie: I have gotten a lot of support around me, of course you always get to hear different opinions about CrossFit but none of them to bad. aXis: Do you have a nutrition plan that you follow? If yes, do you meet disapproval from you friends? Annie: I try to eat healthy and little processed food, have a lot of high quality protein. I’m not strict paleo since I do eat dairy products (we have a lot of really clean dairy products here in Iceland) and some grains. My friends that train understand it and the others respect why I do it. aXis: What does crossfit mean to you? Annie: It means a lot to me, I found something that I love and really enjoy doing. Definitely changed my life in many ways. aXis: What is your favorite WOD and least favorite? Annie: I love heavy chippers, pull ups, push ups and something with a lot of Olympic lifts. In the benchmark workouts I like Grace, Isabel, Angie, DT and McGhee. Probably my least favorite is something that involves a lot of running and a lot of MUs.

EAT ADVICE FROM Andres D’Antoni 3rd year Medical ] Student

ASK DR. D'

Instead of Naughty or Nice, How about just plain old Stressed Out or Ecstatic! What mood swings! I mean seriously here we are few weeks from finals that can make us or break us and then after that, a few weeks from Christmas and New Years, the best time of year! What’s going on, how can I handle this? Well, as for myself being in medical school, I can totally relate and understand what you’re going through. As I’ve looked into this, during these times there are mood stabilizing neurotransmitters like Serotonin and Stress Hormones like Cortisol that are working in our systems. Serotonin is a chemical that helps maintain a “happy feeling,” and seems to help keep our moods under control by helping with sleep, calming anxiety, and relieving depression. Cortisol is more of the fight or flight hormone that is mostly released during stressful situations; unfortunately chronic overproduction of Cortisol by constant stress can have negative effects. So the key is to maintain a healthy balance, (which I know can be hard now, but at least try to be aware), not to overeat, exercise, plan and schedule ahead (especially with those exams) and really take advantage of our time off to the fullest, remembering to rest. Enjoy your break Have a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

aXis: Is it hard for you to combine your daily tasks with workouts? Annie: Not really I try to go according to schedule and that usually involves training… aXis: What is your biggest Crossfit accomplishment? Annie: I would have to say 11th place on the Games 2009 and 2nd place 2010 and 1st place in 2011! aXis: Any great stories? Annie: I have a lot of them… probably the most memorable one is how I got to the games 2009. I had never done a CrossFit workout before but decided to compete at the Regionals in Iceland. I had an oral math exam earlier that same day = Stress and 2 hours of sleep so I slept between workouts! Ended up as a lot of fun though and a trip to the Games.
