Brandon (Michael Fassbender) is a New Yorker who shuns intimacy with women but feeds his desires with a compulsive addiction to sex. When his wayward younger sister (Carey Mulligan) moves into his apartment stirring memories of their shared painful past, Brandon’s insular life spirals out of control. This NC-17 release has earned more than a fair share of positive reviews, including the following from the Orlando Sentinel: “Fascinating. It’s a riveting performance, one of the gutsiest of the year and not just because of the nudity.”

A young lawyer travels to a remote village where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorizing the locals.

The Reflection is the first new studio album by Keb Mo since Suitcase in 2006. These twelve songs are the product of an important period of personal and professional growth for the artist formerly known as Kevin Moore. In that time, he started a new family; moved from Los Angeles to Nashville; built a state–of–the–art home studio, and founded his own label, Yolabelle International, distributed by Ryko and the Warner Music Group. Keb Mo is a three–time Grammy Award winner for Best Contemporary Blues Album; and a key figure in the acclaimed 2003 PBS series Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues. But The Reflection is not, in essence, a blues album. In sound and spirit, it’s closer to the work of African–American “folk soul” singer/ songwriters like Bill Withers, Bobby Womack, and Terry Callier.

Throughout February, various times and prices With a cannon arm and lightning speed that earned him 12 consecutive Gold Glove Awards, four batting crowns, and 3,000 hits, Roberto Clemente Walker (1934-1972) was an outstanding baseball player, but the Puerto Rico native was also a dedicated humanitarian. Beyond Baseball: The Life of Roberto Clemente, developed by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, the Smithsonian Latino Center, the Clemente family, and the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, is a bilingual tribute to his outstanding achievements that takes visitors on a journey into sports history, ethnic pride, and a profound commitment to helping others. Beyond Baseball:The Life of Roberto Clemente includes biographical highlights, baseball statistics, rare photographs, and firsthand accounts from the people who knew Clemente best. In his 18 years with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Clemente was an integral part of the Pirates’ World Series victories in 1960 and 1971. Clemente’s precise and powerful throwing arm earned him acclaim as “the greatest right fielder of all time” by FOX sportscaster Tim McCarver. He also was honored as the National League MVP in 1966 and elected to the Hall of Fame posthumously, the first Latino American to be inducted.

While Clemente rose to stardom with his accomplishments on the field, he never forgot his heritage and the prejudice he had faced. He fought for the recognition of his fellow Latino baseball players, helped people in need across the United States and Central America, and held free baseball clinics for children in his homeland. His charitable work led to the creation of Sports City, an athletic complex in his hometown of Carolina, Puerto Rico, designed to help disadvantaged youth develop athletic skills and avoid illegal drug use. Tragically, Clemente’s life ended at age 38 in a plane crash in 1972; he was flying relief supplies to Nicaraguan earthquake victims. In memory of Clemente, the Roberto Clemente Man of the Year Award was established to recognize baseball players like Derek Jeter, Albert Pujols, Jim Thome, and Curt Schilling, who

MUSIC

THE SOCIAL • 54 N. Orange Ave. • 407.246.1419 Fri, February 10, 9pm, $10 - $12, 18+

Right now, the smoky amber of her whiskey is all that’s keeping Kaleigh Baker from running out the double doors and not stopping. It’s a chilly Friday night in December and the 21-year-old New York native eyes a growing crowd at the Social in downtown Orlando, near her home of almost two years. Kaleigh (pronounced Kay-lee) came to Florida to attend Full Sail, the vocational entertainment institute, to learn about the business of music and how to put on a show and she’s put it to use many times before – at coffeehouses, hookah bars, even her own school. But this is different. The Social is the center of gravity in Orlando’s music scene. It’s not a breeding ground; it’s a proving ground. She takes another hit of whiskey and heads out with her band, a star sextet she’s amassed from members of local jazz crew Swing in Time and Sam Rivers’ Rivbea Orchestra. And then, she goes nearly deaf. “I couldn’t hear anything. I was in some weird zone,” says Baker. What happens after that moment is entirely unpredictable and nearly magical. With impeccable swagger, vocal chops as playful as Diane Schuur with a Patti Smith bent and backing musicians telekinetically linked to Baker’s every whim, she shrugs off the jitters and brings the house down. Behind the enraptured masses and off to the side sits Baker’s benefactor, Alexandra Sarton, that inescapable invisible hand of Orlando’s female music scene, grinning knowingly and nodding her head.

28 WEDNESDAY NIGHT PITCHER SHOW FEATURING MY BLOODY VALENTINE

Yonder Mountain String Band has always played music by its own set of rules. Bending bluegrass, rock and countless other influences that the band cites,Yonder has pioneered a sound of their own. With their traditional lineup of instruments, the band may look like a traditional bluegrass band at first glance but they’ve created their own music that transcends any genre. Dave Johnston points out “What could be more pure than making your own music.” Yonder’s sound cannot be classified purely as “bluegrass” or “string music” but rather it’s an original sound created from “looking at music from [their] own experiences and doing the best job possible.” The band continues to play by their own rules on their new record The Show. The Colorado-based foursome has crisscrossed the country over the past eleven years playing such varied settings as festivals, rock clubs, Red Rocks Amphitheater in the band’s home state, and recently the Democratic National Convention in Denver at Mile High Stadium opening for Barack Obama.Their loyal fanbase has been built from this diverse setting of music venues as fans latched on to their genre-defying

From the bombastic and epic, to the folky and mystical, Get The Led Out have captured the essence of the recorded music of Led Zeppelin and brought it to the big concert stage. The Philadelphia-based group consists of six accomplished musicians intent on delivering Led Zeppelin’s studio recordings with all the bells and whistles. Utilizing the multi-instrumentalists at their disposal, Get The Led Out re-create the songs in all their depth and glory with the studio overdubs that Zeppelin themselves never performed live. Dubbed by the media as “The American Led Zeppelin,” Get The Led Out present a two hour + set each night that spans the mythic career of the legendary British supergroup. With a strong focus on the early years, they also touch on the deeper cuts that were seldom, if ever heard in concert. The group is achieving strong box office scores in the Mid-Atlantic. Not uncommon are return-visits and sell-outs at a number of the region’s most prominent venues and PACs including House of Blues (Atlantic City), Pennsylvania’s Sovereign Center and Keswick Theatre, and Oswego New York’s “Harborfest” (two years in a row) as well as countless other theaters and national concert venues. Despite amassing scene status and praise from regional press right out of the gate, Orlando band The Pauses release their debut album after TWO YEARS of existence. The official excuse was wanting to do things properly, so they saved their money and headed up to Baltimore to record at Magpie Cage Studios with the legendary J. Robbins, even enlisting three-quarters of the dude s own band. Produced, engineered, and mixed by Robbins; mastered by T.J. Lipple (Aloha); and featuring guest appearances from members of Deleted Scenes, Office of Future Plans, and Channels, A Cautionary Tale is an exercise in complexity and combination, a world where guitars are BFFs with synthesizers, horns, bells, and ukuleles.

GABRIELLA KATIA

aXis: Thanks for joining us on the rooftop at One80 Lounge to celebrate an All Star month of partying. So how many all stars usually drop by your local haunt at Rok Room, any crazy stories? Gabriella: Quite a few stop by that I have seen personally, sometimes you’ll see Turkoglu or other Magic players. But usually they are laying low in the corner and don’t really want to be seen. But who knows what will happen during All Star weekend. aXis: OK, so how many rock stars drop by too, you can divulge, Myers won’t mind!? Gabriella: Well I sure hope he won’t mind or else I could be in trouble here haha! Meyer is super close with the boys from NSYNC ;) So you’ll usually see JC or Chris Kirkpatrick hanging out in Rok Room. aXis: Along with spending time behind bars at the Rok Room, you also spend time on the laptop with your VCC classes, and on the road as a model. What have been some of your recent road trips? Gabriella: Well, last summer was when I did most of my traveling. I traveled the whole nation with the Pro Wakeboard tour as Miss Transworld Wake, it was a blast and I really enjoyed partying and hanging out with everyone in that scene. But I have to say my best trip was when I went to Toronto at the end of July to shoot Coquette’s 2012 Lingerie Catalog, to me it really is the best city in the world and I was able to see it at its finest! aXis: Most interesting shoot location? Gabriella: I probably have to again say it was when we shot the main collection section of the Coquette Catalog. It was in this massive old spanish style mansion, this place had the most extravagant architecture and the sickest views. Cant beat that!

aXis: From the model/host perspective, what is the difference between a wake superstar and a music superstar, and while we’re at it, a sports superstar? Gabriella: Well to me they are all extremely talented but the main difference is most music superstars are known worldwide and wakeboard superstars seem to just be really known in Orlando, I feel like SOME wakeboard superstars and sports superstars tend to be more modest about everything rather than Music superstars do. aXis: What are you looking forward to the most about the big All Star party weekend in OTown? Gabriella: AH! aXis: What do you want to be when you ‘grow up’? Gabriella: I really would like to pursue a modeling career but so does a billion other people so I always have a plan B! I want to be in the Entertainment industry though, possibly use my business degree to start my own agency, or work with a really well known one as a scout or host a TV show.

FEBRUARY 2012

BREWSOME... KEEPING YOU HIP TO THE hops A BREW for any OCCASION with Mahoney of

World of Beer UCF 3 Brews for the V-Day Blues…

3 Brews for the All Star in You…

3 Brews for Spring Breakin’ the Rules…

Well’s Banana Bread

The All-Star Game is approaching and with the possibility of Dwight Howard leaving Orlando here are three All-Star Beers (2011 GABF winners) to get you through the tough times ahead…

Since I am out towards the UCF side of town, many people have asked what is a “quality” beer to drink over Spring Break...here are some personal favorites of mine:

Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar(gold)

Brooklyn Pilsner

Now on draught, after years of anticipation. English malts, smooth and biscuit like notes, literally tastes like homemade banana bread. Main reason I’m picking this is because the tap handle looks like big, silver “enter phallic sex toy reference here”. Nice unique twist on a relatively bland style.

Young’s Double Chocolate Stout

Smooth, creamy and made with “luxury” chocolate. This smooth English stout is soft, sweet, and velvety. Nice milk chocolate flavor, light bitterness, roasted malts that yield more chocolate flavor, think 75% cacao. Great night cap and can be layered on top of almost any sweeter beer, like a framboise lambic.

Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye

A beer for the single people for V-Day. Bitter and green with… hops. Nice peppery flavor from the rye malts, huge citrus hop bitterness from the Bravo hops. My new favorite beer of choice lately. So for you single people, pound a few of these and pass out…this greeting card/candy company will be over soon enough.

Solid, nutty brown ale with some light chocolate notes. Like Nutella, Light, crisp and refreshing German-style pilsner brewed with real ingredients… but in beer form. This is my favorite beer from Rogue, and it is no rice and no corn. This is the first time we have seen it here in bottles in Florida, finally in 6pks. so support a great craft brewery.

Oskar Blues Mama’s Little Yella Pils (silver)

Colorado born and bred. Great pilsner, with a nice hop bite that makes it very drinkable. I love canned craft beer and I bring this everywhere.

Dogfish Head Midas Touch (bronze)

One of the oldest beer recipes in the world. They found remnants of “beer” in a clay pot in King Midas’ tomb. They had it analyzed, and remade the recipe which includes honey, saffron, and white muscat grapes. Sweet, 9% abv, solid golden elixir.

Abita Andygator

This 8% Helles Dopplebock is light in color, rather sweet with a light fruit aroma. Drink less in quantity, make it up in quality.

Harpoon IPA

Smooth, easy drinking IPA. Not overly hoppy, so it makes it very sessionable. A sixer of this will set the mood right. And it comes in cans, so you can bring these to the beach, while checking out some pale, northern college bodies at Cocoa Beach.

ASHLEY BURNS offers advice for those that won’t get into the VIP... because he knows better than most...

In just a few days, our lives as citizens of this quiet little hamlet known as Orlando are going to change forever. We’re going to see things we can’t un-see and we’re going to meet new people that we can’t un-meet. Some of us will have stories to share with our families and friends for the rest of eternity, while others will become precautionary tales for people in cities across America. You see, friends, such is the NBA All-Star Weekend and its legacy of insanity. The key to both enjoying and surviving All-Star Weekend is to not only blend in, but also appreciate the actual event by offering it something in return. You see, the All-Star Game doesn’t simply bring the phenomenon of posses and entourages into our lives. It doesn’t just slap us in our faces and show us that we’re not ballers, nor are we wealthy enough to roll with the elite. But it at least gives us one shot in the dark of proving that we belong. That Orlando belongs. That Magic fans belong. It’s about all of that and so much more. And it all starts with the All-Star Weekend parties. On Saturday night, famous rapper, actor and Harlem shuffler Diddy is hosting a party at the Cheyenne Saloon. You will never be invited to this party, and it would take a Tim Tebow miracle to get you through the doors. Sure, you can be one of those people that drops $1,000 or something ridiculous like that to attend, but you should be able to enjoy yourself without having to mortgage your studio apartment. Here instead are the keys to hosting your own successful NBA All-Star Weekend party. Follow these steps and you’ll be putting a baby inside your own Beyoncé in no time. Step 1: Make a list of everyone that you would normally invite to a party. Step 2: Tear that list up, because all of your friends are dorks. Create a new list of people that you would want to invite to a party – musicians, actors, politicians, reality TV stars, socialites – and begin researching their contact information. Step 3: Purchase a high quality digital camera with night vision and a strong zoom lens. Step 4: Begin following your favorite celebrities and wait for them to do stupid things so you can photograph it. I strongly recommend with this limited time frame that you recruit your least dorky friends (5 maximum because they reflect who you are and the celebs will see right through you) to break your list into groups. Step 5: Once you have obtained photos of your celebs doing stupid and embarrassing things (you may also want to send them booze to expedite their idiocy), go ahead and send each of them a personalized invitation telling them who you are (For example: I’m Burnsy, a bitchin’ lothario with abs sculpted by the Titans) and what you’re inviting them to (the most balls deep party they’ll ever attend). Step 6: Recognize the silence and the fact that they won’t respond. Step 7: Send them new invitations, this time including a copy of the photo of them doing something stupid. In my case, I would want Ryan Gosling to attend my party, so I would try to obtain a picture of him spooning with a homeless man in a dumpster.Again, don’t worry about how it gets done, just get it done. Step 8: Await their RSVPs, as they should all come to their senses and understand that it’s worth it to attend a party at your place instead of being outed to the world as geriatric foot fetishists or even worse – bald. Step 9: You may get some calls from people claiming to be lawyers representing those celebrities. We’re almost out of time, so go ahead and leak one of the photos to TMZ, call the rest of the lawyers back and tell them, “That’s how I roll.” You should have green lights for the rest of the way. Step 10: Pick up the proper party snacks and drinks, including multiple flavors of Pringles, a few boxes of Star Crunch, a 10-gallon bucket of Skittles and 600 bottles of grain alcohol. Obviously, my taste may differ from yours, so you might decide to get Combos instead of Pringles. To each his own. Step 11: Hire a couple bouncers to make sure that no Real World or Jersey Shore cast members are allowed into your place. This is incredibly important because they will try to become squatters and they’re harder to get out than hooker blood stains. Step 12: Open your front door and let the stars fill your home’s sky. Once everyone is nice and tipsy, dare one of the celebrities – mine will be Mickey Rourke – to crash Diddy’s party and announce that the real jams are pumping at your place. Then you might want to get a haircut and buy a scepter, because you’re going to be crowned NBA All-Star Weekend royalty in no time. more insight from the Burnsy, visit him at Twitter @mayorburnsy or feel free to email your complaints to ashleyburns@live.com
