FGL has been mixing up genres about as much as their audience has been mixing cocktails during their nearly decade long run at the top of the charts, including the biggest Country download of all time with “Cruise” in 2012.. Brian Kelley of Ormand Beach and Tyler Hubbard of somewhere in Georgia, Dig Your Roots with the singles “H.O.L.Y.” and “May We All” putting them back on top and filling arenas on the new tour. Check out some words with Hubbard and local boy made good, Kelley, before their All Pro Weekend preparty! aXis: Does this ascent to superstardom ever surprise you guys? Hubbard: There was long van rides where we’ve sat around and been like, ‘Dude, why are these people showing up to watch us play?’ We’re definitely not the best singers. There’s a lot that we can’t do, compared to a lot of other artists. One of the things I think we did nail, from back in the day, is just being transparent and being real. I think that’s who we are, almost to a fault, I guess, but our fans connect with that. aXis: You guys had to narrow down almost 75 tracks to make Dig Your Roots a one album release? Hubbard: They kind of start to weed themselves out. I think once we get it down to about 20 songs, it really becomes difficult … We just tried to narrow down the best songs that fit the record at this point, and the strongest songs that we feel like are in our power to choose, and that’s kind of what we do. aXis: You guys did the majority of writing on this one including the title track? Hubbard: As we recorded this record, that song set itself apart, really encompassed the whole record into one song, if that’s even possible. We just felt like it, from the beginning, stood out, as the title track. As we were searching for a tour name, it did the same thing … There wasn’t a ton of thought that went into it, other than the fact that it was obvious for us as we were recording the record. aXis: H.O.L.Y. exploded for you guys, how did you know that might be one you wanted to record? Hubbard: Sometimes a song just comes in, and when you’re in the studio, you just know. I think I would have personally been really shocked if it didn’t have a pretty good response. But I really don’t think we were prepared for the response that we were getting. Every single night, live, when people just hear that we’re about to play “H.O.L.Y.,” the place just erupts. We didn’t even feel that with “Cruise.” To come out with a song and be out for a couple of months and to have the reaction it has is absolutely mind-blowing. I don’t think we really were expecting it to be quite so huge. aXis: Kelley rocked some lead vox on this record as well? Hubbard: There are some songs that just lend themselves to BK singing them. Obviously, some of the songs were really personal, and only BK could sing [them], and then some others just needed to have BK’s voice on it, bottom line. He sounded better and really, it just fit; it was organic, and it was perfect. Usually we always say, ‘better is better.’ That’s kind of our motto: Better is better. On some of these songs, it was definitely better to have BK singing lead.

UCF in the NFL season recap

aXismag.com | jan 2017 | p21

Despite not having any players selected in the 2016 NFL Draft, the University of Central Florida still has a strong presence of players in the NFL; especially for a Group of Five Program. The 2016 NFL regular season just came to an end and a few UCF alumnus had big seasons. In my opinion, here are the top 3 offensive and defense players from the 2016 NFL season who went to UCF.

OFFENSE:

• Latavius Murray • RB • Oakland Raiders

2016 Season Totals: 195 Carries, 788 Yards, 12 Touchdowns Murray played at UCF from 2008-12. He was selected in the 6th round of the 2013 NFL draft by the Oakland Raiders. Best Game: Week 7 vs the Denver Broncos. Murray ran for 114 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries. Future: Murray and the Oakland Raiders exceeded all expectations this season. The Raiders finished 12-4 and Murray finished the season with 12 rushing touchdowns. Murray will look to build off his stellar season and continue to be the workhouse running back for an up-and-coming Raiders team.

• Brandon Marshall • WR • New York Jets

2016 Season Totals: 59 Receptions, 788 Yards, 3 Touchowns Marshall played at UCF from 2004-05. He was selected in the 4th round of the 2006 NFL draft by the Denver Broncos. Best Game: Week 5 at the Pittsburgh Steelers. Marshall caught eight passes for 114 yards and one touchdown. Future: Marshall has played for four NFL franchises and has produced at a high-level for all of them. The issue is Marshall has yet to play in a playoff game despite being in the league for 11 seasons. The Jets are coming off a disappointing 5-11 season and the team might be looking to move on from on of their highest payed players who is not getting any younger.

• Blake Bortles • QB • Jacksonville Jaguars

2016 Season Totals: 3,905 Yards Passing, 23 Touchdowns Bortles played at UCF from 2011-13. He was selected in the 1st round of the 2014 NFL draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Best Game: Week 7 at the Tennessee Titans. Bortles threw for 337 yards and three touchdowns and no interceptions. Future: There was a time late in this regular season where Bortles had more career pick 6’s than wins as a starting quarterback for the Jaguars. Bortles had a disappointing campaign in 2016, which might have had something to due with the firing of his head coach Gus Bradley. The Jaguars are searching for a new head coach and we will see with time what they end up doing with Bortles who has one hear left on his rookie contract.

• Honorable mention to the greatest Place Kicker of all time... Matt Prater of the Detroit Lions

DEFENSE:

• A.J. Bouye • CB • Houston Texans

2016 Season Totals: 1 Interception, 63 Tackles Bouye played at UCF from 2009-12. He went undrafted and was picked up by the Texans to begin the 2013 NFL season. Best Game: Week 11 at the Oakland Raiders. Bouye recorded his only interception of the season and added two tackles. Future: Bouye is the number three corner on the Texans depth chart behind Jonathan Joseph and Kareem Jackson who are not getting any younger. The Texans finished secondbest in the NFL in passing yards allowed in part to Bouye adding depth to the defensive back backfield.

• Leger Douzable • DE • Buffalo Bills

2016 Season Totals: 1.5 Sacks, 43 Tackles Douzable played at UCF from 2004-07. He went undrafted and was signed by the Minnesota Vikings in 2008. Best Game: Week 1 at the Baltimore Ravens. Douzable recorded 1.5 sacks and two tackles. Future: Douzable is currently backing up DE Kyle Williams who told the media Sunday he was contemplating retirement. Douzable could have a bright future with the Bills if he can get those reps as a starter.

• Kemal Ishmael • S • Atlanta Falcons

- Jimmy Calhoun @JimmyCalhounUCF

2016 Season Totals: 52 Tackles, 2 Passes Defended Ishmael played at UCF from 2009-12. Ishmael was a 7th round pick in the 2013 NFL draft by the Atlanta Falcons. Best Game: Week 2 at the Oakland Raiders. Ishmael recorded 15 tackles and one pass defended. Future: The Falcons drafted Keanu Neal, a safety out of the University of Florida, in the 1st round of this past NFL draft. Neal was hurt to begin the year and that is when Ishmael received his opportunity. Ishmael played well when he was given the opportunity and didn’t play much after Neal returned from injury. Hopefully the time he had as the starter was enough to help him secure a spot on the 53-man roster next season.
