Jane Picken’s Theater
past. present. future.
To Re-Vitalize and Revive the Jane Picken’s Theater by linking the Past and Present Layers. The proposed new layer acts as a channel that links the original theater with the outside. This inserted layer binds the past with the present and its geometry ties together the discordant set of spaces to create a unified interior.
Past
Present
Future
The art intervention boldly interjects with the existing facade to create passage into the existing theater, through its central axis, which was important in the past, when it was a church, and is a crucial planning element in the present context. This channel takes the user directly into the theater, and acts as a funnelling element,to reveal the past. . The shell of this historic building is retained as well as the existing theater. A new volume is inserted, which has the new program including a cafe and gift shop on the street level that can be accessed from the outside and the inside. The upper lobby now has a viewing lounge that looks out into the city, and a second theatre, for private screenings, which can also open up and become a part of the existing theater, by using a retractable wall. All these flexible spaces can be accomodated to specific activities, which can function parallely or in a unified manner. The new inserted walls also contain the buildings main circulation. The intention is to intervene to bring out the maximum potential of this historic building and revitalize it by engaging the local community, while maintaining its status and connecting it with the past. The spatial flexibility between the old and new theater allows the building to expand into new programmatic needs of future.

04 FANLIGHT WALL The design exercise uses the ceiling fan as an example of a typical domestic object and intends to abstract it towards the development of a spacial element. The fan was abstracted and converted into modules that when interconnected become a partition. At the same time each module serve as a lighting component brightening the space around it.

The project focuses on the fabrication of a prototype that will become an intervention on a contemporary domestic space. By repeating, bending, rotating, etc a built component from the domestic environment, that wasn’t intended as an architecture or furniture design in its original use, the project aims to adapt this new form to become a spatial component that when repeated vertically or horizontally achieves a double function.

The design was based on orientation, simplicity of form and other requirements of function provided by the client. Several form options were developed in the process and tested for energy efficiency. The landscape around the built mass was designed in such a way so that the building looked submerged, while approaching it. The earth berming would keep the habitable spaces to remain cooler, in a climate like Delhi. Several combinations of materials were also experimented with, to finally arrive at stone and brick walls, wood cladding and exposed concrete.

Green Community ACSA COMPETITION 2009
Design is based on compact city design, so as to achieve a lowground coverage of less than 20%. Large green spaces provided to most of the dwelling units, which further provide spaces for food production at the unit level. Large spaces dedicated to pedestrain movement and for community spaces, to promote a healthy social environment and promote sociability, hence adding to the sustainibility of the community. More than 100% of the site under green cover, with almost 50% of the site dedicated to green cover and a large space dedicated to urban agriculture.
