The IDEA The project had begun with intense thoughts and questions concerning the present condition of the largest archaeological park of Pafos in Cyprus, which located in the region of Kato Pafos. A second reason was the town selection as European Capital of Culture in 2017. The question was focused on the relationship of the archaeological park with the town, which can be described essentially as a sectional relationship. While the town grows in a normal way, a boundary is created at the point where comes in contact with the borders of the archaeological park, and then the town planning and its continuity are interrupted, creating an intense discontinuity. A second issue, is the lack of museum spaces and buildings at the town. Pafos could be described, as an immense museum, if we take under consideration that exists for over 2300 years. The town of Pafos has a remarkable history, which left a rare cultural heritage and gave a prominent position in the history and the culture of Cyprus. Today, Pafos has a small provincial archaeological

museum, which is neither able to reveal the history nor accommodate all those numerous discoveries that have been found by archaeological excavations. In this project, we try to give a complete design at the whole area of archaeological park, using a strategic plan (masterplan) and based on this, we design the New Archaeological Museum for the park.

The CONCEPT The concept is based on a transverse path which begins from the town field, crosses the park and finishes at the sea creating an ending - “a balcony with view”. On this crossing route (flow), we locate the new Archaeological Museum of the park which essentially follows the linearity of the flow. The museum is based on two principles. The first is that, it has to fly over the ground to be able to “respect” any future discoveries are possible to be found underneath. The second concerns the relationship of the building with the scale of the town and its elements. Due to the huge scale of the building - about 6000 square meters - the technique of crack is applied into the flow, taking advantage of the difference in altitude, thanks to a hill in the archaeological park. So, while the building is able to soar over the ground, the same time is able to hide itself in a rift and finally it converses in harmony with the town and the archaeological park.
