Haydarpasa Port Post Industrial Par The context Haydarpaşa Railway Station is the long-standing, oldest terminal in Turkey. Built by the German-owned Anatolian-Baghdad Railways and designed by architects Otto Ritter and Helmuth Conu in the first decade of the 20th century as Europe’s gateway to the east, the station was a terminus of the Istanbul-Medina-Damascus railway line and later for routes to Anatolia. The station had also long served as the terminus for trains coming to the commercial capital from Anatolia. Even though it has been severely damaged in numerous incidents throughout its past, it still stands out as one of the most iconic structures in Istanbul, Turkey.
Hoping to reunite the terminal with the city’s inhabitants, I started the project with a field analysis to understand how Haydarpaşa Railway Station was cut off from the city and its residents in the first place, and what can be done to help it regain its status eventually.
I chose Haydarpaşa Railway Station as the subject for my graduation project as it was such a landmark in Istanbul. As I completed this project with utmost joy, I believe the design process helped me set a solid foundation for analysing a site and making design decisions based on actual needs.
The current state of the terminal, along with these new plans and its loneliness, strongly contradicted the very notion of a train terminal, and therefore it shall be fixed. For many years, Haydarpaşa Railway Station stayed as a symbol of reaching loved ones, hopes, dreams, and Istanbul. Thus, I took this project a bit personal, both as a citizen and a landscape architect, and started working on the site to give it its earned status.
The challenge In the 2010s, the terminal and the land it occupies has become a target for many; the mass construction projects, the Marmaray project, and the Ankara-Istanbul high-speed train project, all wishing to get a slice from the land it occupies. To put it simply, it was evident that the Haydarpaşa Railway Station has been deliberately left in the shadows by officials and ripped apart from the city to benefit the construction projects.
When I started to dig deeper to understand the ongoing project proposal surrounding the terminal, it was evident that the aim was not to connect Haydarpaşa Railway Station into the city as its inseparable part, instead, transforming the terminal into a mere station and utilise the rest of the land for more lucrative purposes.

The solution After the analysis, I began to regularly pay visits to the site to kick start the ideation process. During my visits, the most remarkable aspect of the station showed itself rather quickly. It turned out that many buildings on the site seemed to had been designed as a solution to actual needs. Guesthouses for guests, luggage rooms, railway maintenance buildings, train maintenance hangars, wagon maintenance buildings, workshops, houses for workers, manufacture facilities for train components, even a sewing building for the workers’ clothes. In a nutshell, it was clear that Haydarpaşa Railway Station was indeed a well-rounded factory that is entirely self-sufficient and not dependent on the outside world. So, once I realised the site offers more than how it is viewed from the outset, I commenced laying out a plan that simply includes all these derelict buildings too. As I started to work on the concept part, I put together a list of principles for the master plan as a first step. In essence, my goal was clear; preserving the railways as much as I could, and creating linear spaces that encompass the buildings on the site. I primarily planned to take the railways as a reference point for the project and ideated how everything else would sit well. I wanted to create a recreational space, which is well connected to the city, that greets visitors with its original characteristics to remind them of its glorious past.

The BO Viera Bodrum The context
The challenge
The BO Viera Bodrum was realized at Küçükbük Bay, which is located between Bodrum Türkbükü and Gündoğan. The project is consisting of 330 villas and residences, a 1.2 kilometres private beach and 85 hotel rooms on 150000 sqm of land.
The main challenge was that the terrain is sharply inclined and the project site is sitting on a rocky hillside. Due to limited free space, the design has to follow the topographic character of the land. Besides, the brief called for blending with nature wherever possible.
As a part of a large team, I was primarily responsible for common spaces of which had not been solved in the concept and design development stages, including playgrounds and pools. Also, helped the team on construction documentation and plantation in particular.
Summers in Bodrum is hot, and days are long. The expectation was to design a playground that allows kids to have fun not only during the day but also at night times when the temperature is low enough for them to play. For shading, the client wanted to see natural elements rather than extra layers on top of the play spaces/

Nidapark Istinye The context
The challenge
Located in Istinye – one of the most prestigious neighbourhoods of Istanbul with a history that dates back to ancient times, the Nidapark Istinye Project stands out with its exquisite sea view and architectural properties with its 56 blocks, 514 apartment units.
As a recurring theme in most of the projects in Istanbul, the land itself with stark elevation differences posed a challenge. Located on a steep slope, one of the challenges was to create a dynamic flow of the walls which were expected to separate the buildings from outside without creating a bulky, monolith structure.
As a big-scale residential project with a brief calling for a unique approach, I worked on this project as a part of a large team. I joined the team after the concept design stage is completed. Mainly focused on the detailed design, including wall structures, and solving granular level design challenges. A part of the project also included a small-scale villa garden that I was involved in and worked through all stages as the primary designer from inception to construction documentation.
As for the villa, also located in the site, the brief was to create a private area with its own entrance linked to the main road.

Nidapark Istinye The solution The outside wall is transformed into a multi-purpose landscape element rather than a mere separation unit to make it less intimidating. As for the villa site, a steel mesh is mounted onto the wall between the buildings and the climbers are planted to create a dynamic atmosphere. Knowing that the client is keen to display his own sculptures, we designed a shading element that leaves space for displaying one. This element aimed to serve two purposes: offering a visually appealing perspective view as one leaves the house and acting as a separator between the pool and the cars.

Nisantasi Collective Art Park The context
The challenge
In 2013, we, architecture students in Turkey, witnessed something so inspirational that I reckon shaped our values and perspective deeply: the Gezi Protests. A wave of demonstrations and civil unrest in Turkey initially contest the urban development plan for Istanbul’s Taksim Gezi Park.
To carve out a lovely park out of the physical limitations, I knew I had to level the park for access, guiding visitors into the alternative paths within it and encouraging them to explore the space thoroughly.
In short, the Gezi Protests showed that a park could hold greater potential than its primary purpose dictates. It showed me and everyone that an alternative way is always possible. The barricades in the park, the flimsy tables to distribute food and provisions such as masks, vinegar, antiacid medicines to mitigate effects of tear gas, the lines that utilised to coordinate waste management, all were quite random and designed upon the actual needs of the people in the park, yet pretty creative and inspirational, both functionally and structurally. And so, I worked on this project as a part of my bachelor degree, under the great influence of the Gezi Protests.
To me, channelling visitors to the different directions in the park could only be possible if the park has something different to offer every time. With that in mind, I ideated on transforming the park into a living organism, like the city itself, which is dynamic and changing its skin constantly by art installations and communal movements.

The solution To come up with solutions to let visitors have spaces of engagement, I strived to create assembly points to gather around, standing platforms for activists to greet visitors, focal points for performance artists, and design a space for a summer cinema.
I tried to link all of these mentioned elements with the walls that simply flow through the park. Wanted these detached walls to be a whole dynamic wall that offers space for graffiti artists and visitors. Also, I purposefully let walls take the shape of sitting elements carrying lighting components at various points because of changing elevalation levels.
Ankara HiltonSA The context The Ankara HiltonSA is located in a lively area, a 5-minute walk from Tunali Hilmi Shopping Street. Numerous government embassies are a kilometre away and within five kilometres of attractions like the Kocatepe Mosque, the parliamentary building and the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. As a redesign project, the terrace and the hotel’s garden have been designed to maximise the limited outdoor space. From inception to construction documentation, as the sole designer and project manager, I managed the project and worked with the parties, including the landscape construction firm and the stakeholders.

The challenge With limited usable spaces, the challenge was to find innovative ways of maximising the efficiency of space. Since the hotel sits on sloped land, it was tough to make space for outdoor seating areas. Also, next to a main road, an expectation of a level of isolation was in the brief to give customers a sense that they’re disconnected from the busy environment. The solution A terracing solution has been employed to utilise unused spaces and transform the long slope into a series of shorter ones in the garden. The plantation is delivered based on elevation differences to mainly cover constructional details inside the outdoor area—an innovative wall designed to offer isolation from the street in line with the expectations

The context Located in an industrial zone, the company HQ was undergoing a complete renovation. As part of the project, the brief called for green common spaces to be designed for the enjoyment of both visitors and employees. As a company HQ, the expectation was to have an outcome that could add prestige to the brand. Besides, cancelling outside noise as much as possible and increasing air quality were amongst the client’s expectations. As a contractor, I joined the project during the concept design stage and was primarily responsible for 3-D rendering and design development of the concept design.

The construction company managed to implement the design with almost no alterations. Actual images from the site show that the plan was carried out meticulously from inception to construction documentation and executed as expected.
