Knudson Law Office

id you know the Winnipeg real estate market experienced record-breaking sales in 2016? Monthly reports released by Winnipeg REALTORS® attribute this increased activity to the city’s recent growth in population and immigration. Curtis Knudson, real estate lawyer at Knudson Law Office, has seen this surge within his Winnipeg law practice first-hand. “We’ve had a very busy year and we’ve noticed that our clients seem to share the same questions regarding property taxes, interest, land transfer taxes and legal costs. There is even greater concern in these areas for newcomers to Canada who are not familiar with our process,” says Curtis from his Portage Avenue firm. “My advice to those in the real estate market is to not hesitate to call me to discuss the closing process, including closing costs. My experience is that when I have these conversations with clients they end our discussion feeling much more at ease. Many of our clients are purchasing a new home and selling their current home at the same time. It’s a very exciting and challenging time for them. We share our experience and do our best to offer clear and solid advice,” Curtis explains.

A Note From Yoko A Look in the Mirror
A
s 2016 draws to a close, I can confidently say that Ayoko Design Web Print has successfully completed a new chapter. In January 2016, Ayame Ulrich and I announced our new business partnership, and in March we moved to a new location. After 17 years in business, this has been the most exciting and revealing year yet. We have learned so much about ourselves, our brand and the fusion of the two, and we have big plans for new growth. As we work through our business plan for the upcoming year, we have spent time reflecting on the evolution of the business and WOW do we have history! Our experiences and relationships along the way have definitely solidified who we are as people and what our brand has become. The way we conduct our lives and business has become synonymous with our brand philosophy – marrying nostalgic, old school values and work ethic with new technology. We believe innovation is paramount and relationships are key. As early adopters of the newest technology, we help our clients implement the most suitable tools to promote their business and brand. In keeping with our vintage-inspired branding, the Ayoko Design ads in this issue are a spoof on Victorian-style advertising; we’ve gone way back to when you couldn’t

call or email a business, or search for products and services online. If you were interested in a product back then, you had to handwrite and mail a letter to inquire about product details or to make a purchase. It was a far cry from the crowdsourcing and eCommerce we are accustomed to today. Why did I choose this advertising theme? I have always been amused by the overembellishment, quackery and claims to have the “cure for all that ails you” in this style of ad. The illustrations and designs are busy, and the content is excessive and redundant, but they are definitely attractive and engaging. As outrageous as our claims may seem, I can assure you that they are entirely legitimate! Goodbye Victorian Age and hello 2017, where we are busier than ever, but we have managed to slow down our hectic work pace and focus even more time on quality and service, and nurturing our existing relationships. We are taking time to make a personal connection and communicate with people the old fashioned way. As publishers of Ayoko Magazine, we have the unique ability to feature and promote our clients in print, offering even further exposure and market reach to a different audience than those who visit a business online. One of my favourite quotes is from Pete Blackshaw, Former President of the Board of Directors of
the Council of Better Business Bureaus: “To succeed in a world where consumers now control the conversation, and where satisfied customers tell three friends while angry customers tell 3,000, companies must achieve credibility on every front.” We strongly believe that in this day of social media and the Internet, print can give a business instant credibility and makes a concrete and lasting presence. It’s our way of saying thank you to our clients. You have endorsed our credibility and we want to do our share to support and promote yours. With a background and experience in graphic design, printing, branding, web design, email, print and social media marketing, advertising, publishing, copywriting, editing, merchandising, event planning, interior design, promotions, business networking, consulting, mentoring and lecturing, we strive to do our best to promote your brand. Since 1999, we have worked with a diverse group of businesses. As a Winnipeg business ourselves, and publishers of Ayoko Magazine, we get the big picture and our agenda is clear: we care about our clients and the quality of our work, and strive to promote Winnipeg businesses every way we know how! This issue is a tribute to all our loyal clients. I hope you enjoy learning about their businesses as much as we have over the years.

Holding the Hands of Time NURTURING RELATIONSHIPS SLOW AND STEADY
I
f there’s one thing most of us can agree on, it’s that time is precious. There just never seems to be enough of it in the day to complete our never-ending list of tasks. With a finite amount of time and an ever growing workload, it’s no surprise that technology has stepped in to help. Email is the perfect example in the work world, as it is so much more efficient than meeting in person or even picking up the telephone. There is a catch, though. While it may seem easier and more convenient for both parties to communicate electronically, taking a moment every now and then for real live human interaction can go a long way to establish credibility and trust with clients. I suppose subconsciously I am very aware of time - my age, my past - and wonder how the future will be different. In my lifetime, I have had the good fortune to have seen the world both before and after the introduction of the Internet and smartphones. I often wish my kids could have known what life was like in the good old days, because they would look at relationships and human connections very differently than they do now. My husband’s grandmother, Dorothy Campbell, lived to be 100 years old. Over her lifetime alone, she went from living a modest lifestyle next to the Riel family on River Road - which was then considered “the country” - to the age of the Internet. She witnessed major turning points in technology and culture during her lifetime such as the invention of the radio, airplane, automobile, television, rocket, robot, penicillin, atomic bomb, microwave, mobile phone, credit card, computer, laptop, video game, the World Wide Web, Google, social media, email and smartphones. All of which are things we cannot imagine living without today.
Dorothy made the most of her time on this planet. She was very proud to have been around long enough to see the world change so dramatically. She lived through two world wars and the Great Depression, and when she turned 100 years old she received a congratulatory letter from Queen Elizabeth recognizing her amazing accomplishment. Even if you are fortunate enough to enjoy living 100 years like Dorothy did, time still always feels very precious. Time is wonderful and time is fleeting. Time can even become beautiful pieces of art, décor or jewellery in the hands of a master watchmaker. I recently stumbled upon a set of small stacking drawers at an antique store. I opened the drawers to find tiny little glass bottles with cork stoppers and miniature glassine envelopes. I soon realized they were watchmaking parts. They were so small and intricate they looked like tiny specks of dirt at first glance. Upon further inspection, I realized they were microscopic springs, gears, screws and watch hands. These little pieces were a very literal example of how time is made up of intricate parts, experiences, people and relationships in our lives. Of course I had to have them! When I took them to the counter to purchase them, the salesperson asked me what I was going to do with them. I told her that I wasn’t entirely sure yet, but I knew they would be very useful to me at some point. They were just too unique and interesting for me to pass up. I suppose somehow, in my mind, possessing all those delicate little pieces of time gave me a sense of control over something that I have absolutely no control of otherwise. Time slips away from us all whether we like it or not.
That’s why we are always planning and reorganizing to find ways to make the most of our short workday for the benefit of ourselves and our clients. Our goal is to get to know our clients better, faster and become their trusted partner. The sooner we achieve this, the sooner our clients recognize we’re a valuable asset and can play an important role in their lives and businesses. We take time to learn about our clients, their company’s early beginnings, journey to the present and want to be part of their visions and strategy for the future. We strive to treat each client as if they are the most important one. We focus on building relationships that stick around for life and always try to go the extra mile. Our innate ability to build relationships, combined with our commitment to supporting the local business community is our most valued asset. Our clients are instrumental to the life force of our business, always challenging and inspiring us, but also our most valuable and powerful referral source for new business. The bottom line is we want to get to know our clients even better, and we want you to know all about them too. Our goal for 2017 is to continue focusing on ways to find the time to make a personal connection with our clients. To build a lasting relationship, we need to be more than just an email contact or wizard behind the curtain, we need to connect and be accessible on a human level. Pick up the phone, grab a cup of coffee every now and then and even send a note to your clients in the mail. You’ll get to know each other a whole lot better and making the effort to connect in person is, by far, the best way to remain top-of-mind.

Working at a Snail’s Pace
A
few months ago I came across a box of old letters I’d been saving since I was a kid. Over 30 years ago, my best friend Eleanor Ericson moved away to Sweden for a year. During that time, the only way we could keep in touch was through written correspondence (read pages 14 and 15 to see our letters). The thing with snail mail is that it takes time and thought to send a note, and you have to wait a couple weeks to receive a letter that has been sent half way across the globe. Having a pen pal to share stories with and the anticipation of receiving a reply a few weeks later was fun. It was always exciting to check the mail and a thrill to receive a letter or a parcel. Ellie eventually returned, but shortly after it was my turn to move away. We kept in touch for a few years, but she moved around too. For a few years I was unable to find her. And then … there was Facebook. Social media has still not become a huge part of my life, but it has been very useful for connecting with old friends who’ve moved away as well as distant relatives I’ve never known. It’s amazing to be able to find anyone anywhere, and that I can reach those “Facebook friends” whenever I want to. On the flip side, I seem to make a lot less effort to keep in touch – and while I may see what they are up to and photos of their kids and family, that doesn’t necessarily mean we actually connect. When I came across my old letters from Ellie, I contacted her on Facebook and, as it turned out, she saved all her letters from over

30 years ago too! It seems like Ellie turned out to be a lot like me. She is a creative person and a professional photographer, and was kind enough to take photos of all my old letters and mail correspondence. So, here you have it, proof that the written note can have a very lasting impact and presence. There is a Chinese Proverb that says, “The faintest ink is better than the best memory.” No electronic form of communication can ever compare. Beautiful stationery, note cards, books and magazines have always had a place in my heart. In my professional life, the printed piece – ink on paper – continues to be the most-effective outlet for advertising and promoting our services. Second in line to real life contact of course. People save special notes, especially nowadays when there are so little of them out there, so don’t hesitate to get in touch and make a personal connection with your friends, family and clients. Even in this digital age, people prefer to formalize a special, memorable event on something more concrete like a paper invitation or announcement, photo card, handwritten note or thank you note. Who knows, maybe your client will save your letter, or this magazine, for 30 years too? So fill up your inkwell and sharpen your quill pen! Write a letter, note or card to your family, friends and clients. D-Liver D-Letter D-Sooner D-Better, and don’t forget to S.W.A.K. (Seal With A Kiss)!

TEN STEPS FOR FOCUSING AND COMPLETING TASKS The world today moves very quickly and, as creatives, we need to be in the right frame of mind to have those eureka moments. I find myself constantly struggling to find ways to group tasks into practical categories that are less overwhelming and achievable. When I am watching the clock by the minute, I feel bombarded with demands and it somehow seems to feel like I have more work to finish in a day. This race against the clock every day has a negative impact on our health, diet, environment, work and relationships. A racing mind is very distractible and slowing down helps increase focus on our goals. We expect instant results these days because we are used to getting them. When we see ourselves struggling to keep up, our confidence takes a hit. If you set goals together with your clients, you both see progress and it becomes motivating rather than daunting. A system like this creates more communication touch points which does a lot to solidify relationships and build trust with your clients. When multitasking, things can take twice as long as you flip back and forth and you may not finish either one of them. Some companies are encouraging staff to focus on one task at a time, and to complete lists in sequence. It sounds simple, but with all our distractions throughout the day, it takes some real effort to get through a workday in an order that makes sense.
16
AyokoMagazine.com
Here are ten tips to help with this process: • Choose your top three tasks for the day and break them into manageable chunks. • Prioritize their importance and timeliness. • Set a schedule with time limits and set alarms to help train your brain to stay on track. • Work on them in that order and, if you can help it, do not start another until you finish the one you are working on. • Set an alarm as a 15-minute warning before meetings so you can make sure you are prepared. • Take meeting notes. • Only check your email and voicemail at certain times throughout the day. • Work in the same quiet space every day to avoid distractions and get in a habit. • Make certain your workspace is neat and clean, and be sure to leave it that way at the end of the day. • Surround yourself with organized people.
Maintaining this routine won’t make your life any less busy, and your list won’t get any smaller, but you will be able to complete more tasks in a shorter time frame and feel much more relaxed with a sense of reward and accomplishment.
Old and New Worlds Collide FOLLOWING THE LEAD OF GEN Z Generation Z, consisting of seven to 17 year olds, has been coined “The Homeland Generation,” and is predicted to be going back to the basics: a simpler life with a focus on relationships. The views of this group are also expected to be more global, social, family-oriented, collaborative, multi-cultural, health-conscious, sharing, hopeful and optimistic in nature. After working for a year in our new studio space, it feels like our future at Ayoko Design is moving in the right direction. And in keeping with our tradition of blending a little old with the new, our focus remains on being true to ourselves and our brand, making a personal connection with our clients to build lasting relationships and slowing down our pace to achieve faster results. All of which seem to be in line with the way of the future. As the new year takes hold, ask yourself this: What can I learn from generations past and those of the future to improve my business? Would a back to basics approach work in my organization? YOKO CHAPMAN Publisher, Editor-In-Chief + Creative Director

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHTS
GET TO KNOW EIGHT OF THE AMAZING WINNIPEG BUSINESSES AND ORGANIZATIONS AYOKO DESIGN HAS HAD THE PLEASURE OF WORKING WITH.
Photo: Erin Alexander Photography
Winnipeg is home to a number of accomplished entrepreneurs and business professionals. A single street can harmoniously host both veteran establishments and hip new start-ups. New businesses are popping up all the time, and within the past few years, Winnipeggers have added a number of new names to their list of favourite hubs. A great company is defined by a number of aspects – their location, their products and services, their philosophy, their history, the list goes on. In this issue, Ayoko Magazine is proud to feature not only a number of remarkable businesses, but the brilliant minds behind the operations. With the likes of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and Napster creator Sean Parker, young-adults are no strangers to the competitive world of business, yet seldom do we hear of teenagers joining the list of great Winnipeg entrepreneurs. At 19 years old, Winnipeg’s Rahim Mirza has created quite a name for himself as founder of Ninja Blade Lawn Care and as a proud Royal LePage Real Estate Agent.
Rahim’s incredibly supportive family and hours of Shotokan Karate training have given him the edge he needs to make his mark in a fiercely competitive industry. We hope you enjoy reading Rahim’s inspiring story, our first business spotlight in this issue, featuring just a small sampling of some of the amazing Winnipeg entrepreneurs Ayoko Design Web Print has had the pleasure to work with.

ou often hear about born entrepreneurs. These claims are usually exaggerated, but that’s not the case with Winnipeg real estate agent and entrepreneur Rahim Mirza. Rahim is only 19, but he has multiple businesses under his belt and is a high-performing Royal LePage real estate agent. While real estate is his calling, his business career really began in Grade Five on the streets of River Heights. “During elementary school I applied for a paper route,” Rahim explains. “I used to have four blocks in River Heights that I would deliver to once a week for about a year. The job was fun; it taught me a lot of discipline. After the winter season I quit. I couldn’t stand pushing that cart through the snow-covered sidewalks any longer!” Rahim decided to switch to warm weather work and began his own lawn care business at the age of 12. “From the money I saved from my paper route I bought a new lawn mower and posted an ad on Kijiji,” says Rahim. “Within a couple days I got my first lawn care gig. Within a few months I had registered the business as Ninja Blade Lawn Care.” While trudging through the snow helped teach discipline, his martial arts training hammered it home. He is a Nidan (second degree) black belt in Shotokan Karate with ISKF Canada. His training had a huge impact on his early life, so it was only natural that it was reflected in the name of his first business. “Shortly after registering the business, Ninja Blade Lawn Care had over 15 monthly lawn care contracts all around River Heights and Tuxedo,” he explains. “My mom used to drive me from job to job every weekend and, instead of waiting, she would bring a weed whacker and start trimming around sidewalks and flower beds.” An immigration lawyer and partner with Fillmore Riley LLP, Rahim’s mother Sofia and father Adnan have supported Rahim since he was a tot. From role model to lawn care chauffeur and support system, Rahim credits his parents for giving him the drive and push he needed.
18
AyokoMagazine.com
Hard work, determination and creativity gave Rahim an edge, but it was his family that gave him his start. For Rahim, it goes back two generations to his 89-year-old grandfather Meraj, who passed his entrepreneurial spirit down through the Mirza ranks. An air mechanic for Canadian Airlines, Meraj began dabbling in property investment and management with Rahim’s uncle Saleem and mother as something to keep him busy after retiring. Dating back to when Rahim was ten years old, he remembers his grandfather picking him up from elementary school to take him along while he checked on his properties. Rahim remembers vacuuming the buildings, watching Meraj test the fire alarm systems and dealing with the day-to-day responsibilities that come along with managing a property and tenants. At the same time, Rahim’s lawn care business was bringing more and more success, but it also brought on a bad case of ongoing hay fever. Rahim made a shift into construction, building decks and fences with a friend, and he also began taking over the management of his grandpa’s properties. During high school, he slowly became the main point of contact for tenants. Always there to help, his mother Sofia assisted with all necessary legal requirements and paperwork until Rahim was old enough to take it all on himself. He then took over the management of the various trades, snow removal, advertising, lease agreements and day-to-day operations. This was when his passion for real estate truly blossomed. At age 18, fresh out of high school, he got his real estate licence and began looking for a brokerage to join. “I applied at a number of places, but they said I was too young to be in Real Estate – I should come back and see them when I was 25,” he explains with a laugh. “I decided to go with Royal LePage Dynamic on Corydon as they welcomed me with open arms, and they are a very well-known Canadian company.” Things have only gone up from there. Rahim has excelled as a real estate advisor, and loves helping people make the biggest purchase of their lives.
On top of his real estate brokerage work, he is the President and CEO of Mirza Properties & Developments, Chairman and President of Mirza Capital Corporation and Senior Director in ROC Capital Group Inc. An average workday for Rahim tops 12 hours and it’s not unusual for him to be working on deals at 11 pm. His real estate investment work adds to his workload, as his partners currently manage 18 rental units. Why such diversification? Rahim explains, “They say the average millionaire has seven sources of income, so that’s my goal.” If you’re looking for a real estate ninja to help with your next big purchase, you can reach him at 204.989.5000 or at www.rahimmirza.ca.

Ayoko Design is often involved in the developmental stage of a new business idea or invention. We had the pleasure of helping volunpreneurs Hennie Corrin and Joyce Berry in 2007 with the launch of Floral Philanthropy, a charity that repurposes flower arrangements from weddings and other floral-filled events. These flowers are then delivered to hospitals, seniors and anyone in need of the uplifting effects fresh flowers bring. In addition to our involvement in the brainstorming and branding process, we built their website and designed the promotional materials for Floral Philanthropy. We always enjoy collaborating with this enthusiastic and talented team, and are pleased to feature their most recent accomplishment: CRAFTED Show + Sale at the Winnipeg Art Gallery.

Featuring 60 juried artists, four DIY workshops and a unique fundraising component, event creators Hennie Corrin and Joyce Berry set out to elevate craft as art and bring attention to the Manitoba makers scene in the process. For Hennie and Joyce, this annual event is about more than showcasing beautiful artistry – it’s also about bringing the community together to help those in need. They have collaborated on countless charitable events in the past and their planning approach always includes a cause-minded view of the world. This year they asked an avid quilter to spearhead the Quilting for Philanthropy project. This Crafting for a Cause effort recruited quilters and sewing enthusiasts to create and donate quilts and pillowcases for children and teens at CancerCare Manitoba and the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba. The goal was to create a breathtaking display in the Gallery for the CRAFTED event and to provide comfort to young patients. “We were able to display something that was exquisite at the show and then give it away to people in need. It was a beautiful way to marry the art of craft and philanthropy,” Joyce explains.

Even though Hennie and Joyce are volunteers, they quickly learned that planning a large-scale craft show with a philanthropic component is comparable to starting a business – it involved researching other shows locally and across North America, assembling a team, planning, organizing and sourcing artisans to participate, promoting, making sales and raising money. In addition to their endless energy, drive and creativity, the team’s strongest skill is doing their research and finding the right volunteer committee for the job. In the case of CRAFTED, it was also about finding the right venue – and if you want to showcase amazing art, then the WAG is the place to be. Never one to shy away from unique and experimental offerings, the WAG welcomed the show with open arms. Sherri Van Went, WAG Manager of Retail Operations, was then instrumental in creating a partnership with the Manitoba Craft Council and the Nunavut Arts and Crafts Association, as well as helping with planning, organizing and promoting the event. On top of showcasing and supporting Manitoba and Nunavut artists, there were also ample opportunities for show attendees to create art as well.
With four carefully selected and planned DIY workshops, visitors got hands-on training in eclectic crafting techniques including beading, fly tying, calligraphy and paper marbling. For attendees, it was more than an art sale – it was a chance to learn new skills and create amazing works of art. Susan Millican attended both year’s shows and loved the DIY workshops. “I’ve done five classes now and I’m going to take more next year,” Susan explains. “It’s a humbling experience. It makes you appreciate the skill involved and the time it takes to make something beautiful. I’m a newbie to crafts and needed serious help, but the teachers were so generous and patient; they never made me feel totally inadequate. Everyone had a good time and enjoyed the whole experience.” This year’s event saw 3,000 visitors pass through the doors and the 60 featured artists sold over $120,000 in one-of-a-kind wares. Revenues from the event were close to $45,000, which will be used to promote programming and the art of craft at the WAG. CRAFTED Show + Sale 2017 takes place November 3 and 4 at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. For more information, visit www.wag.ca/crafted.

TRANSITIONS SENIOR CARE CONSULTING AND THE POSY PROJECT
Photo: Erin Alexander Photography
Business partners Sydney Berquist and Heather Vasey first approached Ayoko Design in 2016 looking for new branding for Transitions Senior Care Consulting, as well as a matching logo and promotional materials for their newest venture: The Posy Project. We were pleased to create two harmonious logos and brands centred around feminine floral illustrations and colours with a soft vintage feel, as well as a new mobilefriendly website. We were proud to create a look that reflected the grace of the company and hope you enjoy reading about Transitions Senior Care Consulting and The Posy Project.

eather Vasey and Sydney Berquist are co-owners and operators of Transitions Senior Care Consulting, providing personal care planning and home care service for seniors. Transitions graciously provides comfort and resources to seniors experiencing shifts in living situations, changes to care and more. They also provide a positive and welcoming community for seniors and families to discuss and record their wishes and discuss plans regarding personal care and beliefs. While Transitions has been in business for only a year, Heather and Sydney have a long and colourful history of working with seniors. They both had fathers who battled Alzheimer’s disease and understand that caring for someone with memory loss requires an extensive support network. That’s why the team at Transitions Senior Care Consulting is dedicated to supplying fair and quality care to their clientele. “We wish to help families navigate through the many transitions they face; to make posi-

tive changes and move forward. We offer the full spectrum of resources,” shares Heather. To help increase Alzheimer’s awareness and education in their community, Sydney and Heather became goodwill ambassadors and co-founders of The Posy Project, where generously donated flowers and repurposed flowers are given to the elderly, specifically those who are affected by Alzheimer’s disease. The repurposed flowers have been previously featured at events such as weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, and socials, making this an incredibly resourceful and benevolent plan. Flowers are known to promote health, happiness and hope for everyone, especially the ill and aging. Valuing the life of a bouquet can inspire a senior to value their own life. Additionally, the weekly delivery of flowers can add new life to the uniform room of a senior care home. The Posy Project can be found on Facebook and Instagram, which makes spreading awareness of the foundation simple and effective. Their website features a photo gallery showcasing photos of previously received flower
arrangements, as well as photos of the team involved in running the organization. The Posy Project also accepts monetary donations, flower donations and repurposed flowers to help support those who are living with Alzheimer’s and their adult children. Donations can be made directly to The Posy Project, or through the Alzheimer’s Society of Manitoba website under “Upcoming Events.” Funds raised go directly to public awareness and caregiver education. Transitions Senior Care Consulting and The Posy Project join forces to assure comfort, convenience and positivity by regarding the individual needs of their clients. “We offer a wide range of services and give a voice to those who can no longer speak for themselves, ” says Sydney. If you wish to donate to The Posy Project, or discuss senior care options for a friend or loved one, you can visit www.transitionsconsulting.ca, call Heather at 204.891.3301 or call Sydney at 204.996.3335.

INSTANT CREDIBILITY Taking photos on your phone is fast and easy, but if they are not carefully composed, you risk compromising your brand image and reputation. A professional photographer understands how to create effective imagery that conveys credibility and builds your brand. STAND OUT FROM YOUR COMPETITION With so many competitors marketing online, it is more important than ever to find ways to stand out from the crowd. Stock images are an economical option, but do not represent your business’s individuality. Working with a professional photographer guarantees your images are yours alone.
Investing in high-quality professional photography does far more than illustrate products and services, it tells the whole story behind your business. From the inner workings of your production line to beautiful, like-worthy product shots, the key is quality over quantity, and choosing a photographer that can elevate your brand through the power of photography. Erin Alexander specializes in corporate headshots, styled product photos, catalogue and fashion photos, as well as wedding photography and child and family portraits. For more of her work, view www.erinalexanderphotography.com.
GENERATE FREE PUBLICITY Sharing branded images online can create free publicity for your business as followers like and share your photos. This will help more potential customers become familiar with your products and services. MAKE A PERSONAL CONNECTION Company headshots depict the personality of the people behind the business. Customers want to see who they will really be doing business with, not a stock photograph.

P
rofessional photographs have become one of the most effective tools to promote your brand and broaden customer reach. One of the main reasons for this is the rise in popularity of social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest where strategic, quality photographs can help you grab attention and reach a new audience. Professional photographer Erin Alexander explains, “One carefully composed photograph can help customers understand and connect with your brand at a glance. You can share a photo of yourself or team to make a personal connection. Seeing the face behind the business helps establish trust and credibility, and people are more likely to do business with you.” Of course not any photo will do. It is imperative that great photos be used consistently in advertising campaigns and events, branded print materials, and on your website, blog and social media. arvard University research shows that, “Taking the time to stop and smell the roses may do more than serve as a reminder to live in the moment. These blooms can enrich our wellness, too.” Another study showed that frequency of cultural activity was positively associated with good health and life satisfaction, as well as decreased anxiety and depression. These are just a few of the reasons why Hazel Borys and Hennie Corrin decided to bring Art in Bloom to the Winnipeg Art Gallery April 20 to 23, 2017. Inspired by similar Art in Bloom events held for decades at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Art in Bloom will feature a lush exhibit of floral designs showcased alongside the art that inspired them. “It’s a great opportunity to reach out to groups who don’t typically come to the gallery,” Hennie explains. “It’s the perfect setting for people to look at both flowers and art in a new way.” Professional and non-professional florists will interpret 65 of the WAG’s 15th to 21st-century works including paintings, Inuit carvings, sculptures and more. Their beautiful floral designs will be open to viewing throughout the art gallery. Entry is included in your Gallery admission price and, after the event, the flowers will be repurposed by Floral Philanthropy to deliver petal pick-me-ups to people in health care centres, hospitals and personal care homes.

SWEET IMPRESSIONS Ayoko Design was first introduced to the decadent treats of Sweet Impressions 100% nut free bakery in 2004 when they asked us to design their pink vintagestyle kitchen booth for the Wonderful Wedding Show. Little did we know, the design for that trade show
booth would soon become a major part of their branding, store dĂŠcor and display fixtures! We have since helped integrate their vintage design into a number of trade show booths, shopping mall kiosks, window displays, point of purchase displays, packaging, labels and promotional materials. We hope you enjoy reading about their new line of candy and how Sweet Impressions bakes the world a better place.

ife just got a little sweeter! Krista Robertson and Aynsley Rosin, co-owners of Sweet Impressions, a 100% nut free boutique bakery located at 669 Stafford Street, recently revamped the bakery’s décor and beloved menu to feature a new line of candy shoppe sweets! The new line features vibrantly coloured gumballs, candy pearls and their own signature sprinkle mixes which are incorporated into their cupcakes and cakes. The store has also introduced made-in-house chocolate bark bars in flavours such as cookies and cream, salted pretzel, rocky road and rainbow confetti! Even their homemade caramel popcorn has been kicked up a notch with the addition of a few new flavours. As always, everything is completely nut free. “It is very important to us that we create a safe environment for those with allergies. It really is the heart of our business,” Aynsley shares. Don’t worry; the bakery’s popular classics are here to stay. The boutique will still offer freshbaked homemade and hand-decorated cookies, cakes and cupcakes in an assortment of flavours. Brownie cheesecakes and “Cloud 9” cakes (a decadent dessert consisting of alternating layers of giant cookies and whipped cream) are also available. They even have a whole selection of equally decadent vegan goodies! “We bake everything from scratch and artistically decorate each cookie by hand, creating edible art. This is one of the qualities that we take great pride in,” Krista explains. Their retro kitchen studio has everything from a vintage pink fridge and stove to a crystal chandelier and even a checkered floor. This creative workspace is truly inspiring and offers all-inclusive cookie decorating birthday parties for kids and holiday classes for adults. V.I.B. WEDDINGS Featuring local content, inspiration, real weddings and more, the next issue of V.I.B. Weddings magazine will be distributed directly to brides at the Wonderful Wedding Show this January in Winnipeg. We have enjoyed creating content on upcoming wedding and design trends for 2017, and are very excited to see the final product. The magazine’s tagline “365 Days of Wonderful” is certainly very fitting. We hope you enjoy learning more about this publication and will get a chance to visit the 2017 Wonderful Wedding Show January 21 and 22 at the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg.

ow you’re engaged… better start planning! Many couples decide what their dream wedding will look like long before there’s even a hint of a marriage proposal. For others, a little guidance and inspiration is required to get started. The first step is taking some time to envision the overall look, feel, style, colours and setting of your wedding. Whether you love collecting images online or you prefer ripping out magazine pages the old fashioned way, creating a design storyboard like this one is a great way to collect your favourite ideas and organize your thoughts.

f you’ve been to the Wonderful Wedding Show, then you understand the excitement of seeing hundreds of Winnipeg’s top wedding vendors all under one roof. As the 2017 show approaches, Showtime Productions and the Wonderful Wedding Show are excited to launch their second issue of V.I.B. Weddings, a magazine for the Very Important Bride! V.I.B. Weddings captures the excitement of the Wonderful Wedding Show in print. It features 100% local content, real weddings for inspiration and amazing products and services from Wonderful Wedding Show vendors to help with your own wedding planning. The magazine also features a special Show Guide section with an exhibitor listing, floor plan and editorial about the show. Last year’s magazine proved to be an invaluable planning tool for brides and grooms, and the 2017 edition promises to be even bigger and better. The issue is jam-packed with inspiration and advice from local wedding industry experts, a sneak peek at wedding colours, fashion, design and décor trends for 2017, plus vendor spotlights highlighting Vendors We Love. “Launching our very own wedding magazine last year was a perfect way to complete the Wonderful Wedding Show’s vision of 365 Days of Wonderful,” explains Sherri Rheubottom, Show Manager. “Not only can vendors and attendees benefit from actually attending the show, but now the promotion of our amazing wedding vendors and the valuable planning information we strive to provide to couples continues well after the show. They can continue using V.I.B. Weddings magazine as an additional planning tool along with the extensive information we provide throughout the year through our Wonderful Wedding Show website and social media. Our magazine also proudly features 100% local Manitoba content and gives us the opportunity to showcase so many talented vendors in the Manitoba wedding industry.” The magazine is distributed free to every single bride at the Wonderful Wedding Show and at select vendor retail locations throughout Manitoba. For the media savvy, a full digital version of V.I.B. Weddings will be available through the Wonderful
