Colin McHugh Supportive Education Student of the Year

“I like the night class where we get to socialise with each other...” Colin joined the Supportive Education section of the college in 2005 when his family returned to live in Ayr after having been in Yorkshire for several years. John Brims, Curriculum Manager for the Supportive Education Unit says, “Colin settled in very well right from the beginning. His bright personality, cheery smile and happy disposition made him a firm favourite with both students and staff. He always tried his best and was keen to learn new skills and participate in all the activities. He joined the night class and loved taking part in the facilities on offer, be it sport or evenings out.” He also encouraged other fellow students and was full of praise for them when they did well. He joined us in two trips abroad, namely to Spain, Euro Disney and Paris and his enthusiasm shone throughout. Colin is

happily still with us at Ayr College where he is now taking part in some interest based classes. Colin is an example to us all and we wish him well for the future.” Colin says, “ I have a great time at college. My dad drops me off and picks me up on a Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. I like to go into the quiet room and sit with my friends for a while. Then I go to my classes which are Drama, Cooking, Gardening, Numbers and Computing. I like the Computing class the best. I have made new friends here and I like the night class where we get to socialise with each other, e.g., going bowling or to the cinema. When I am not in college I like to watch TV especially the news and football. My favourite team is Manchester United.”

Prudencia Belle

“ The staff are devoted to their work, and the other students are lovable.” Prudencia, Ayr College’s first student from Cameroon, studied a one year HNC Health Care, in order to enter university. “I’d been working in a local hospital as a nursing assistant, then as a community nurse. But I’d heard a UK qualification is highly prestigious and widely recognised. I had a friend who studied in Scotland and she recommended it. I looked on the internet for a suitable college, and Ayr appealed because it’s a community college. “I’d encourage people to come here. The staff are devoted to their work, and the other students are lovable. I’ve been able to cope with the language. I’ve passed everything by studying hard – but that’s what I’m here for. The thing I miss most is my husband and my daughter, Ashley. They’re so proud of me, and Ashley says she wants to be a doctor when she grows up as she’s better than me!” Prudencia is now at Glasgow Caledonian University’s BSc Nursing. “My HNC helped me prepare for this – it’ll be hard work, but I’m determined to succeed.”

ENGINEERING & SCIENCE STUDENT OF THE YEAR

Sean Craig Engineering & Science Student of the Year

“I have been offered a place on a degree course at the University of Dundee.” When Sean Craig left Girvan Academy he enrolled on the HNC Applied Science course at Ayr College. He said “I had really enjoyed studying science at school especially Chemistry as my teacher, Alan Scott, made the subject really interesting and it was this that inspired my learning. Although I attended college I did not do well and soon realised that it was not for me at this time in my life. I went to London where there was an abundance of well paid work in the construction industry and for about 1 ½ years this is what I did. However I began to think this is not what I want to do for the rest of my life so I made a big decision to resign from my job and go back to Scotland and apply for the science course again as it had sparked a real fascination for me first time round. This time I felt ready to tackle the course and really apply myself.” “I have always been interested in science because it is ever changing, each day new things are discovered, breakthroughs in medicine for example can change peoples lives, and I want to be part of this world. I have really enjoyed the course and treated it like a full time job through the week focusing on my course work and getting through the work. I have passed everything and achieved an “A” pass in my Graded Unit exam. Microbiology is the area I am most interested in and I enjoy both the practical and

theoretical classes. I have learned that if it is something I am interested in then this motivates me to apply myself and do the best I can.” “I have been offered a place on a degree course at the University of Dundee. I went along to their Open Day and had a tour of the facilities and met the lecturers who all seem nice. I got a positive feeling about the place and I am looking forward to moving there in September. They have a Job Centre on campus and help you with applications for part time jobs.” “My dream job would be in medical microbiology/diagnostics. The university have told me graduates do go on to work in these jobs or crop research, hospitals or food hygiene so I am looking forward to my new life as a student living away from home and working towards my career goal.” Marti Anderson, Curriculum Leader for Science said, Sean proved to himself that real effort and dedication does reap rewards. He has worked tirelessly to ensure all his assignments were completed and handed in on time and passed on the first attempt. He has been a really positive role model within the class and an inspiration to others.” 31 <<<

Joinery STUDENT OF THE YEAR

Edward Cole Joinery Student of the Year

“ ...I learned different aspects of joinery that I was not doing in my job...” As Edward was growing up he knew he wanted a job that would allow him to be practical and work outside. He was inspired by his dad who is very practical around the house and Edward has always enjoyed helping and learning from him. A pupil from Holmston Primary and Belmont Academy, Edward achieved Higher Physics, Graphic Communication and Int 2 Maths, English and Chemistry. At the end of 5th Year he saw an advert in the local paper for Joinery apprentices at South Ayrshire Council. Edward says, “I sent in my application and was invited in for psychometric tests. Then I had a 1-1 interview and was lucky to selected for this post.” “In my first year I worked with my employer for three weeks and then I was sent to college for 1 week block release. I repeated this in second year and achieved an SVQ Level 11 in Carpentry and Joinery. In third year I studied for the Advanced Craft Certificate. I am just beginning my fourth year and this does not require attendance at college. At the end of the year I will be ready to sit the CITB trade test which if I pass will mean I am a qualified joiner.”

“I have really enjoyed coming to college because I learned different aspects of joinery that I was not doing in my job such as roofing and machining. My job currently involves maintaining council residential properties such as doors, windows and wet rooms. My learning experience has given me confidence to work on my own and make decisions. I am motivated to do the very best job I can and to listen carefully to instructions and follow them through.” The staff in the Carpentry and Joinery section nominated Edward for this Award because he has excellent practical skills, displays a good attitude to learning and carrying out new tasks which he would not encounter on site. He has completed all practical and theoretical tasks to a high standard and demonstrated he can work well in a team or on his own. Edward represented Ayr College in the Scottish heat of Skillbuild and was placed second out of 16 apprentices.

ayr college STUDENT OF THE YEAR

Calum McCutcheon Ayr College Student of the Year

“ I love doing this job as it’s different every day. I never get bored…” Calum attended Carrick Academy leaving with Highers in Maths, Physics, English and Intermediate 2 in PE and Engineering. At this point he had no idea what he wanted to do with his life. He considered joining the Merchant Navy but ruled it out as although he preferred an outdoors/ hands-on job, he was unhappy with the idea of spending so much time away from home. One of his friends told him his employer was looking to take on a plumbing apprentice and encouraged Calum to apply for the job. After an interview and test he was offered a trial period through the summer with John P Telfer Plumbing, in Holmston Road, Ayr. Clearly Calum impressed his employer and started his apprenticeship and attended Ayr College. Calum says, “I love doing this job as it’s different every day. I never get bored as the job offers lots of problems to solve and I enjoy working on the tools on a wide variety of jobs including leadwork, roofwork, bathrooms and central heating.

Curriculum Leader Alan White who nominated Calum for this Award says, “Calum exceeds in all areas of his work at college and is a great influence on his fellow students. He was selected in the summer as the best overall plumber and since then he has also won “The Glasgow and West of Scotland Student of the Year” for plumbing nominated by SNIPEF. (Scotland and Northern Ireland Plumbers Employers Federation). He attended the “Deacons Choosing Dinner” to receive his award. Calum did exceptionally well in the SNIPEF National Competition to receive this Award as a second year student as he was competing against third year plumbers. Calum’s employer is understandably very proud of Calum’s achievements to date and says, “ Ayr College is fantastic, one of the best in Scotland for its lecturing staff and facilities. Plumbing is a well paid job and is now attracting a student who is intelligent and has done well at school but does not want to go to university. 39 <<<

BUSINESS STUDENT OF THE YEAR

Shona McBeth Business Student of the Year

“ I believe disabled people can do anything they want to if they set their sights on it.” When Shona McBeth left Ayr Academy at the end of 6th Year she knew exactly what she wanted to do. Shona explains, “Throughout my secondary education I was inspired by one of my teachers, Alistair Byres who taught me Administration. He made this career sound very exciting and I knew then that this was what I wanted to do, so I applied to college to improve my admin skills and gain qualifications that would help me get a job. My dream job would be a senior administration job so that I can prove everybody wrong who thinks I can’t achieve this because I am disabled. I have a brain and a mouth and I am perfectly capable of achieving my goals. I believe disabled people can do anything they want to if they set their sights on it.” “My experience at Ayr College has been very positive. The lecturers are very helpful and supportive and I am pleased with my achievement so far; NC Skills for Business, NC Intermediate 2 Business & Information Technology and NC Higher Business. I am especially pleased to be able to progress to the HNC Administration and Information Technology course as I like the look of the wide range of subjects I will be studying. As well as achieving qualifications I have become more confident in my abilities and have widened my circle of friends.”

Kathryn Cole who nominated Shona for this Award says, “We have been particularly impressed with the hard work and determination Shona has shown in all her classes. She has a lovely cheerful and enthusiastic personality and we are delighted she has returned to college for another year to continue her studies.” When asked what motivates her, Shona replies, “Self belief, I know I can do it and my lecturers are behind me all the way and are passionate about what they teach so I want to do it for them as well, as they believe in me.” To enable Shona to achieve her learning goals Rosina Russell (a former Ayr College Business student and past winner of the Student of the Year Award) is employed by the Extended Learning Support Services to provide reading and scribing support in all Shona’s classes. Course handouts are also provided in large print. When Shona is not in class she says, “I have adopted effective studying strategies to help me with my homework; if I get an assignment to complete, I get it done right away and then its out of the road! You have to be a very organised person and a good time manager to be a successful student and these skills will be vital when I become employed too.” 47 <<<

Moira Gibson Administration Student of the Year

“ …I feel I am performing better in my job as I have been able to build on my skills.” Moira has been employed by Ayr College for the last nine years as a Management Information Systems Officer. This involves supporting and maintaining all the college student records and HR and Finance systems. Moira’s department liaises with the SQA to register students and process their results and also with the Scottish Funding Council to provide statistical returns. Moira has just completed the ILM Level 5 Diploma in Management and was nominated for this award by her lecturer, Audrey McClements: “Moira is one of the most outstanding candidates I have ever had the joy of teaching. Her work was always delivered on time, to an extremely high standard and in a professional manner. She presented theories and discussions that had clearly been well researched and thought through. Her reports included new information systems that would enhance the student learning environment for her organisation.” Moira says, “Although I have a degree in Business Administration I had not completed any further professional development so I thought it would be a good opportunity to enhance my qualifications. I chose a

management course because it was a vocational qualification, included a wide variety of subjects and suited people like myself who although not in a management position may aspire to one. It also appealed to me because studying locally in the evening and Saturday mornings fitted around my work hours.” “I feel that I have gained a lot from doing this course, in particular I feel I am performing better in my job as I have been able to build on my skills. I have learned about other organisations as well as how my job relates to other parts of the college. Certainly it was a challenging experience and encouraged me to think out of the box. There was continuous assessments throughout the course with no big end of term exam. Since I had made a commitment to completing this course I put a lot of effort into my assignments and was delighted when I received high grades. I have thoroughly enjoyed this course and would recommend it to anyone. The lecturing staff are great and they really put in that extra effort to make the course more enjoyable.”

Claire Maxwell Visual Arts Student of the Year

“The atmosphere was great to work in. The tutors really encouraged us.” Claire Maxwell came to college after completing 6th year at secondary school. She recalls, “ I remember being very unsure of what I wanted to do in the future, I had always had a leaning towards Art so I picked up a prospectus and thought studying graphic design and illustration sounded really interesting. “It was fantastic! We got so many exciting projects to work on. I got the chance to participate in several live projects - we even had the chance to show our ideas to a real design agency (Ocean) and compete against each other for a job there. The atmosphere was great to work in. The tutors really encouraged us, it’s hard work, but you could also enjoy yourself and have a laugh. Everyone’s work gets featured in the End of Year Show” “I’m passionate now about Design and enjoy being a student! I created a portfolio at college that has led to me being accepted to study for a degree course in Visual Communication at The Glasgow School of Art. This course will allow me to expand my skills in graphic design, photography and

illustration and I look forward to learning new skills and techniques. I should come out as an expert in design - that sounds good to me!” “My advice to students who are just beginning their studies with Ayr College is, listen to your tutors. They are wonderful, helpful people. Get to know your classmates – they’ll help you with your ideas. Be prepared to put in the work –the rewards are worth it.” “As to the future, I don’t have one dream job. I have lots! There will be many routes I could take – you maybe need to get back to me in a couple of years.” Julie Brockie, Claire’s Curriculum Leader who nominated her for this Award said, “Claire has been an exemplary student and had 100% attendance over her 2 year HN programme. Having started as an NQ student, she matured to be the outstanding student of her HN years with nine merits to her credit.”

Music Technology & Performing Arts Student OF THE YEAR

Claire Milligan Music Technology & Performing Arts Student of the Year

“I have learned so much at college and I am a completely different person now…” Claire Milligan wanted to leave school as soon as she could and applied for the winter leavers programme at Ayr College. The only course on offer at that time was computing but while she was at her interview she noticed in the prospectus that a music student came here at 15 as he had permission from school to attend. Claire said, “I asked the drama department if I could do a drama course full time and when this was agreed with the school I was so happy. At school the only class I was really interested in was drama and we only had it once a week, but during these classes I thought to myself “this is me, this is what I want to do. I never had that feeling with any other subject.” “I did struggle at first because I was the youngest in the class and it’s so different from school. You have to manage your own workload and this took a lot of getting used to. I realised then that success lies within myself, I am doing this course for me and if I want to do well I need to give 100% commitment. I really believe that you need to want it and it’s that, that motivates you to do well.”

Since coming to College, I’ve performed in a wide variety of plays including comedies called “Cindy and Ella”and “Stags and Hens”, a pantomime; Aladdin, a musical theatre show called “Grease” , a Shakespeare play called “A Midsummer’s Nights Dream” and a more serious play called “Behind Closed Doors.” I liked the comedy roles as I find it easier if people laugh at me as opposed to taking me seriously in a particular role. The hardest role for me was in “Strippers” where I had to wear a corset, stockings and high heels, it took a lot of courage to perform on stage dressed like this and at first I held back but then I just went for it and found that people give you more respect when they see you overcoming a personal challenge.” “I have learned so much at college and I am a completely different person now from the girl that started here three years ago.”

“ The Hospitality staff have been absolutely

amazing. They have helped and supported me…” Carrie O’Donnell started in the hospitality unit in 2005 just after she completed her 4th Year at Ayr Academy. She says, “I always knew that I wanted to be a cook but it was my Gran who encouraged me to go to college and get training. I have really enjoyed the last three years here and have completed Introduction to Professional Cookery, NC Professional Cookery and then last year, SVQ Food Prep and Cooking Level 3. It has been a good training from learning the basics like chopping veg and using equipment correctly to preparing quite advanced dishes. My passion is desserts and for me the presentation has to be absolutely perfect and I take a lot of pride in creating the perfect dessert.” “The Hospitality staff have been absolutely amazing. They have helped and supported me through a very difficult time in my life and gave me hope by saying “You can do this Carrie!” At one point I nearly gave up because my Gran passed away and I wanted to do this for her, but then I thought she would not want me to do this so I’m continuing to do my best. If I had my life to live over again, I would do this training again because it’s the best thing that has ever happened to me and winning this Award in unbelievable.” “While I have been training at college I have had a few jobs such as working in a care home kitchen. I like to help people and I am looking forward to when I get a full time job. I enjoy being part of a team and have made lots of new friends at college. Between work and studying there is not a lot of time for a social life but I don’t mind as I am very happy doing this. It has changed my life.” Hospitality Curriculum Manager, William Ferguson says, “We are delighted to nominate Carrie for this Award as we are so proud of how much she has achieved since coming to college. She is a thoughtful and considered young lady with a high skill level of professional skills. Carrie has gained good citizenship skills, excellent communication skills and regularly volunteers to help out at charity functions. FAShION Student OF THE YEAR

Lizzie McCubbin Fashion Student of the Year

“…I enrolled on the NC Fashion and Clothing course and I have loved every moment of it…” Lizzie McCubbin moved to Monkton, Ayrshire three years ago from Portsmouth where she had worked as the Business Development Manager for Clarins. She got a new job in Hourstons in the perfumery department. Lizzie said, “I loved this job because I got the opportunity to sell all the lovely brands to customers which I really enjoyed doing. Then “Linda Reid” furniture store opened and I joined their sales team. Unfortunately the store closed down and I had to think about what I would like to do in the future.” “When I moved here I decided to join in with evening classes as I did not know anybody and I thought this would be a marvellous way to make friends. I went to sewing classes and made some lovely friends and the lecturer Anne was just wonderful and I really enjoyed my evenings there. I asked Anne what she thought about me becoming a full time student and she thought I would enjoy it.”

>>> 80

“Last year I enrolled on the NC Fashion and Clothing course and I have loved every moment of it. The lecturers on the course specialise in particular areas from design, pattern cutting to sewing techniques. I am impressed by the high level of knowledge and skills each one has but the main reason they stand out is how passionate they are.” “While attending the full time course, I still continued to go to evening classes to do Millinery and I learned skills that proved really useful to enhance my other coursework. This year I am continuing at college to complete the HND Fashion: Design, Production with Retail.” Curriculum Leader, Anne McCaig who nominated Lizzie for this Award says, “Lizzie is very friendly and outgoing with an infectious enthusiasm and has embraced all aspects of college life.”
