The Solutions Show Illegal Downloading (ID)

Ayr College Music Students helped to organise an event called the “Solutions Show.” This concept is the brain child of Eddie Gemmell, Skills Development Scotland Advisor and DJ from the “Careers Show” on 3TFM community radio station. Eddie hosts the show by asking questions, challenging opinions and encouraging solutions from the panel and audience on a particular subject. The Music Business students chose “Illegal Downloading” as they are concerned about the effect it may have on their future music careers. The panel consisted of Jennifer Love (HNC Music Business Student), Michael Corby(Founder of the Babies - a 70’s rock ‘ roll band), Craig McGhee (music promoter and soul DJ), Ewan MacLeod(Lecturer and Label Manager for Influx Music) Lewis Ferguson (3TFM Station Manager), Lisa Cunningham (HNC Music Business Student) and Gordon Cunningham(Skills Development Scotland).

What They Discussed • 6 million people a year illegally download in the UK • It’s having a catastrophic effect on employment in the music industry and rewards for songwriters and musicians. • Illegal downloading is killing the business and if it doesn’t stop we won’t have a music career, how can we enter this industry if those that already have jobs are suffering. • 65% under 16’s think music is free • Major retailers are disappearing

4

Eddie Gemmel

• Many artists “don’t mind” that fans download their music as its building their reputation • Some musicians attitudes are ID/My-space etc will help you get known – you’ll get your money back at the live gigs. But when do the songwriters get paid? • People understand the concept of physical property but when it comes to intellectual property they don’t view it in the same way. So they know its wrong to steal a CD from a shop but they think its OK to download the same CD for free. • The main cause of ID is that people can reproduce an identical copy of the same quality as the original. Now we have the internet this has escalated. • There is no regulation • Why don’t they encode so it can’t be ripped? • Who is the biggest supplier of CD’s – Sony – who enabled the digital technology - Sony? • Technology is causing the problem and its beating us • We’re in a recession, kids have no money, some live very chaotic lifestyles, buying a £5 pack of blank CD’s is attractive to them. • When young people come for careers advice – what should we tell them? How confident are we that they will get a job in this industry? • There is not enough education to young people to let them know the consequences of ID • In the UK what is the punishment for those who ID? A warning letter? • How can you change attitudes? • Whose responsibility is it? • Is this all doom and gloom? Currently the singles charts are booming with sales

What They Suggested

Final Word

• The Government need to get together to prepare a contractual legal obligation • Fine people and take away their internet provision • Internet providers should ban ID • Your anger will drive the solution • It will be down to the determination of individuals • Its easy to download – make it harder – make it cost money – electronic barcodes • Talk to your fans and talk to them the way you want to be treated • Educate people • Find a way via the internet to moneyterise downloading • Blog one song - give away free - but sell/protect the rest of the album

Don’t let ID put you off a career in music. Get yourself work experience do something for yourself. Feedback on the show from SDS, Talkback Productions, students and guests who came along was very good. They thought it was a very constructive and lively debate and welcome more opportunities to use Eddie’s Solutions show for more hot topics.! Eddie would like to thank Curriculum Manager Michael McHugh,Lecturer Paul Hoolahan and their student sound production team; Niall Harris, Conor McGahon, and Danny Paton, for recording the show. Danny will be assisting with the editing and you can hear the show on 3TFM website. www.3tfm.org If you would like to comment on the debate or join in future productions please contact Edward.gemmell@sds.co.uk

The Learnin This month the BUZZ team followed the learning bus as it was out and about in South Ayrshire. On Tuesday afternoons it stops at Boyle Court, a sheltered housing complex in Girvan. The residents were invited to come inside and learn how technology can help them. Each person uses the bus for their personal learning which ranges from using the Internet for shopping, writing up notes, storing photographs, sending e-mails and researching information.

are You ready

John Crawley is… John Crawley used to own the Ayr Book Exchange and has now retired to Girvan. He says, “I just spotted the bus outside my house and went along to find out more about it. I like coming here every week and Duncan (the tutor) helps me look for old movies to buy. This week I am on Amazon and I’ve ordered seven films. The tutors are all exceptionally helpful and they take time to sit beside you and explain things in a way that I can understand. I do have a computer at home but the learning bus has given me more confidence to use it.”

6

n g Bus Jimmy McGheehan also stays in Boyle court and he uses the bus to e-mail his grandson in Afghanistan. Tutor Ian Hessett says, “Sometimes the clients come along and we help them type or look up information and in other cases they just need help to do it for themselves. There is no set work you can work away on whatever interests you. The bus is there from 1.30pm – 3.30pm each Tuesday and if you want to join in please contact Community Education 01465 716600 Next stop is Ballantrae and it couldn’t be a more different class. Here we meet Ayr College’s youngest students aged from 11 years to 13 years. They are learning to make music using Abelton Live music software. Tutor Rikki McKee said “All the pupils are really enthusiastic and love making music. I only need to show them a few times what to do and they are away - they are like sponges soaking up the information. The class runs for 15 weeks and has been very popular.”

Sean Lowe, age 11 from Ballantrae Primary school heard about the bus in the youth club. He is learning to play the bagpipes was attracted to the class because of his love of music. He says, “Music is the best bit and its easy to learn. I really enjoy it.” Andrew Leng, 12 attends Girvan Academy and says “I do a lot of computing at home so I am really enjoying learning new programs and mixing music to create my own sound. It’s really fun to come along to.” Hannah McPherson (11) and Shannon Sockell (13) both from Ballentrae love to sing and will happily perform at every opportunity. They have designed their own flier advertising themselves as “Bliss.” Hannah said, “It’s my dad’s birthday soon so I am creating a song just for him.” Shannon said “We would like to make a record together. We think the more you do and the more you get involved in music will help us in the future. At school we do have digital music but this is much more sophisticated and you can do so much with it. It’s really fun and we love coming here every week.”

Tourism Students Help Find Your Perfect Holiday

T

he HNC Tourism Students worked as a team to organize a major Travel Show at Ayr College. They worked in partnership with Thomas Cook to bring their products and associate tour operators into the college with special offers for staff and students and they were delighted when many of those who attended made actual bookings. They also liaised with West FM to promote the event and raise money for “Haiti Appeal” and through prize draws raised an amazing total of £310 with one lucky person winning a weekend break for two. The students also had a fantastic raffle and top prizes including hand made products from Ailsa Hospital – a Wishing Well and Rocking Chair. They also secured a round of golf at Turnberry and Slater Menswear vouchers, a spectacular hamper and bottles of champagne. The students would like to thank everyone who donated a prize for their raffle. Elaine Munro, Curriculum Leader for Tourism said, “The Travel Show was a successful business venture between Thomas Cook (Ayrshire) Tour Operators, and Ayr College. The potential for building on this opportunity, not only enhances all external business links, but also enhances student citizenship, employability and team building skills. I think the students were even looking at booking a group holiday to celebrate their end of course” Gordon Anderson, Manager of Thomas Cook, Troon branch said “It was good to see the College staff and students working with Thomas Cook to provide a successful event. Thanks should also go to the Tour Operators: Fred Olsen Cruises, Superbreak Holidays, Hoseasons Holidays, Club 18-30,Flexibletrips and Thomas Cook Tour Operations who all came along on the day and most provided a raffle prize.”

NEWS AYR COLLEGE UNVEILS GIANT WATERWHEEL TO HELP ROTARIANS’ FUNDRAISING NC Business Went to Millport

Tuesday 23 February was World Rotary Day and the Rotary Club of Ayr came to Ayr College to unveil a seven foot waterwheel, built by Ayr College students to help raise much needed funds for local and international good causes. The waterwheel will be used by the Rotarians when they are fundraising, with members of the public invited to throw their loose change into the water within the impressive machine. The engineering students designed the waterwheel and assembled the mechanics including the pump. The carpentry and joinery students built the wooden components, whilst the painting and decorating students added the finishing touches. Diane Rawlinson, Ayr College Principal, explained: “We were delighted to receive the call asking for help to construct this fundraising waterwheel. It demonstrates our ability to help at short notice as well as the expert skills of our students and their collaborative approach. We wish the Rotary Club of Ayr all the very best in its fundraising efforts and hope the wheel is well used.” Neil Beattie, Rotary Club of Ayr commented: “We wish to offer our deep appreciation of the effort Ayr College students have shown in their creation of our waterwheel. We are highly impressed with the finished piece of work; it is an amazing piece of kit and perfect for us to use for our fundraising events.” 14

Cystic Fibrosis is the UK’s most common life threatening inherited disease. It affects the internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system, clogging them with a sticky mucus. This makes it extremely hard to breath and digest food. This is the reason we chose to sponsor this charity, by doing an eleven mile cycle round the Isle of Cumbrae and successfully raised over £700 and was an enjoyable day out. Everyone that went to the sponsored cycle managed well and finished within good time. We would like to thank everyone who sponsored us and help raise money for this charity.

FROM A LONDON CART TO MODERN ART Gok Wan –“ He just walked by and said “Hi girls”. I was totally amazed. He was wearing huge mirrored sunglasses and looked just like a diva”. Just another one of the many great things about being in Capital City. You never know who is just around the corner. We even met up with former Ayr College student Claire O’Neil who now works in London as

People watching from Covent Garden, German markets along the Thames, performers dancing in the street - It’s all part of being in London. You have the buzz of the City, the historic buildings, the rush of the people passing by you and not forgetting the quirky little shops along the cobble lanes. London is just full of inspiration, uniqueness and surprise. The Art and Design department got a little taster of this way of life when they took a trip there for the day. Visiting the Tate Modern Museum and walking along the Thames soaking in the City life. Our students had a ball down in London Town. “It was really a great experience”, says Hannah Clark – A Visual Communications student, “The Tate Modern was my favorite part, and there is just so much history and culture. It was very inspiring. London is full of people from all walks of life, and the City is so vibrant”. Definitely the place to be for some of these budding young designers. Speaking of which – one of our lucky students Suzie Gilligan also bumped into fashion guru

a Graphic Designer. Here’s hoping some of our students will get that lucky break too. Well it was very fast paced and we took in a lot, for a days work but our London trip was well worth it, and by the sounds of things it won’t be the last time any of the Ayr College Design students see it either.

Holi Festival One of the major Hindu festivals, Holi is celebrated with enthusiasm and gaiety on the full moon day in the month of March Holi festival may be celebrated by following different traditions depending on which part of India/Nepal you live in.. Holi is also called the Spring Festival - as it marks the arrival of spring the season of hope and joy. Throughout India/Nepal people enjoy the play of colours. Shops and offices remain closed for the day and people get crazy and whacky. Bright colours of gulal and abeer fill the air and people take turns in pouring colour water over each other. Children take special delight in spraying colours on one another with their pichkaris and throwing water balloons at passers by. It is said the spirit of Holi encourages the feeling of brotherhood in society and even enemies become friends on this day. People of all communities and religions participate in this joyous and colourful festival. GUTEN MORGEN GERMANY! This month Harish Behl and Manoj Lama (HND AERO) took advantage of the Schengen Visa to travel to Germany during their half term break. This scheme allows non EU nationals to visit up to 15 European countries using only one visa, thus avoiding the hassle and expense of obtaining individual visas for each country. When asked about the visa application process Harish felt “It was very easy to get to Germany. The international team created a visa letter which I took to the German embassy along with my travel insurance details, tickets and itinerary. I received my visa within 3 days.” Harish and Manoj flew to Frankfurt via London and took the time to stop off for a short tour of the major sites London Bridge, the Eye and of course Big Ben! The boys visited Frankfurt during the Fastnacht festival which celebrates the end of winter. The locals begin the celebrations by parading through the town dressed as demons and witches to symbolise the expulsion of the demon “winter”. Traditionally, celebrations involved eating the last remaining winter stores of lard and butter before fasting and coincide with the beginning of Lent. On talking about his visit Harish was surprised at the size of the city of Frankfurt and friendliness of the people he met. They left having made many new friends and enjoyed the experience so much that they are now planning a trip to France in their next term break. If you are interested in applying for a Schengen visa please do not hesitate to speak to the international team for further assistance.

No Rearview

‘N

o Rearview’ are a band who are gradually building a name for themselves, regularly gigging in various Glasgow venues one of which is there most regular Ivory Blacks, if you wish to catch a glimpse of the three piece band you can on the 26th of March at Garnock Academy in Kilbirnie. This is a charity event for the intensive care unit at Yorkhill, the show should start at roughly 7:00pm and finish at 10:30pm. I chose to go interview this band and get to know a little bit about how they got together and what they hope to achieve in the next five years, here is how it went.

Hi guys how are you? All: Pretty good Righty lets get this interview going Johnny: Ok you ready? How did the band get together? Ross: Well me and Graeme have been playing together for a good 4 to 5 years And Johnny has been with us since the start of this year, we have had a few member changes since me and Graeme got together. How would you describe your music? Ross: Awesome Graeme: Kick-ass Johnny: Not bitchin? Ross: Awesome, Kick-ass, Bitchin ermm...Its just hard rock Graeme: Is it though? Really? We have a lot of non-hard, limp stuff. I would call it...you know just rawk R.A.W.K. Ross: Yeah...yeah we have hard rock songs and soft rock songs...yeah just rock. We like everything different so it’s more interesting for us, so were not playing the same songs over and over again, better for listeners coming to the gigs. What’s your favorite band song? Johnny: Step Inside Graeme: Step Inside Ross: I would say Barricaded Johnny: I like Barricaded Who had the initial idea to create the band? Graeme: After The Garage incident Ross: Garage incident?...aw yeah what it was, it was me Martin and my friend. That was when me and Martin got playing together I played bass, that’s when Graeme

by Albert Rae NC Media Student

came along because he had known Martin for years then it kind of went from that because me and Graeme went into our own thing. Graeme: But we where both playing guitar and we grabbed the first two people to play bass and drums. Ross: Then one of the members just didn’t show up for rehearsal and we just kinda switched around instruments and I started singing, I think it was Barricaded, I started playing that and the other guys started jamming in. We went, “oh this is really good” and we’ve kinda been this line up ever since. What do you hope to achieve in the next five years? All: World domination Johnny laughs Ross: Global peace Johnny: Global peace and world domination? Graeme: I would say a tour Johnny: Yeah a tour Ross: I would really love a tour....within five years I want to play one gig in America just one.

Overall the band generated the feeling that they were very interested and enthusiastic about their work. After the interview the friendly band members Johnny (Drums), Ross (Lead vocals and guitar), and Graeme (backing vocals and bass) invited me to stay and listen to them rehearse their songs for they’re up coming gig dates. If your looking for a good night out with some light rock with some heavier beats for good measure you should go check the band out. I would also like to thank Allan Ried for the wonderful photographs of the band
