Welcome to Kilwinning Segdoune Carnival 2015 Promoting Kilwinning welcomes you to this Souvenir Guide to our annual Segdoune Royal Carnival 2015. We congratulate all of the Royal Party for being nominated by their schools and a special congratulation to Katie Stevely for being chosen as the Segdoune Royal. Katie will be crowned by Colin Young of Woodwynd Community Centre. Colin’s contribution to the Kilwinning Community is well known. He and his team at the Woodwynd Community Centre were the force behind the organising and management of last year’s very successful Queen’s Commonwealth Baton Relay Event in McGavin Park. This year the Woodwynd group, the Aces Mentors, won North Ayrshire’s Young Citizen of the Year award. Well done and congratulations to them. At this year’s Carnival we will also be saying a big THANK YOU to the 2014 Royal Party led by Segdoune Royal, Lauren Caldwell, for representing Kilwinning at many events throughout the year. Well done and a big thank you to them and their families for all their support. The Carnival has a growing reputation as being a great day out for Kilwinning families and visitors. This year we are hoping to continue to enhance this reputation. Our entertainment line up is predominantly provided by local talent. It is always a pleasure for Promoting Kilwinning to discover and celebrate the amazing talent in Kilwinning and Ayrshire. Prepare to be amazed! Lastly I would like to thank everyone who assists in making our Carnivals successful. Thanks to the Promoting Kilwinning team (all volunteers) who meet monthly throughout the year planning for the Carnival and the other major events in Kilwinning: the Christmas lights; Fairtrade Fortnight; the Spring and Autumn Cleanups. Thanks also to the people of Kilwinning and our visitors who always show up to support these events, rain or shine, and generously spend and donate money to make sure Promoting Kilwinning can afford to continue managing future events. Please keep up your support. Please see article about our Christmas Lights Appeal. So make sure you are at the Carnival at Main Street in Kilwinning on Saturday May 30th - 11am to 3.30pm. Hope you have a great day. See you there. Joe Broussard, Chairman, Promoting Kilwinning.

Keep the town’s Christmas Lights switched on Over the last two years strong winds have battered the Christmas lights on the Main Street. Several sections last year had to be left in the dark because the light fixtures in those areas were too badly damaged to be repaired quickly and Promoting Kilwinning had several complaints saying that something should be done. Some complaints went further and said that many of our present light fixtures are out of date and old fashioned. We agree with these complaints and want to do something about them. But we will need help because any money for new Christmas light fixtures has to come from a major fundraising effort by Promoting Kilwinning and its supporters. Unfortunately, too many people think that all Promoting Kilwinning events are fully-funded by North Ayrshire Council and, therefore new Christmas lights should be paid for by the Council. This is not true. Every year Promoting Kilwinning applies to North Ayrshire Council for one annual Community Grant (along with many other community groups) to help it manage all its Events during the year - the two big projects are the Segdoune Carnival and the Switch On of the Christmas lights. Smaller budget items are the Spring and Autumn Cleanups, Fairtrade Fortnight and administration costs. There are no employee costs as Promoting Kilwinning is staffed by volunteers. A successful Community Grant application is usually around £2,000 depending on the competition and Local Authority finances. The average annual budget of Promoting Kilwinning is approximately £6-7,000. Each year Promoting Kilwinning has to seek other sources of income from its own fundraising events, donations from local support groups like Irvine Housing Association, ANCHO, the Rotary, Whitehirst and Woodside Community Association and other local and national grant applications. There is one fundraising hope that may boost our efforts. There is a crowd funding group called Spacehive that helps community groups purchase Christmas lights by matching our own fundraising effort. An application to Spacehive is planned and together with our own fundraising effort we are setting a target of £10,000. If we cannot put on an impressive display we will be forced to make a decision on whether we go ahead with our planned Switch On Event on Sat November 21st. If you want to become involved in our Christmas Lights fundraising effort or have a big or small idea that may help us please contact me on 01294552284 or email: joe@broussard.co.uk Joe Broussard Chairman, Promoting Kilwinning
