Since our last magazine, the first highlight must be the Chamber’s Business Week and Annual Awards in October. I attended the Launch event on Monday and was so inspired by the speakers who focused on innovation as a key driver to business success. Great networking and much business was done on Tuesday at our annual ‘market-place’. The buzz continued at Ladies Business Day (our own LBD!), and culminating with on Friday with the Purple Ice-cream Tasting and Competition – what a real treat! Of course, the big celebrations came on Thursday evening with the Business Awards at Seamill Hydro. The standard of entries was extremely high so the judges had to work really hard for their dinner! This was a tremendous testimonial to the quality of businesses we have in Ayrshire and which enabled them to be showcased, given due recognition and inspire others to success. Congratulations to all our winners and finalists!

Prior to our own awards, three of our winners from 2013 became finalists in the first Scottish Chambers Honours Awards 2014 – First Independent Finance, Internet Anywhere and Craig Johnstone of Giglets Education. This was an opportunity for our local successes to receive recognition and profile beyond the local communities. Internet Anywhere won the Most Promising Business Honours, ensuring a champagne toast for the Ayrshire table! The Chamber is non-political and the Team did a sterling job organising events for both sides of the Referendum campaign to present their cases to

members and guests prior to voting day on 18 September. We also ensured our voices were heard by contributing to the Smith Commission consultation on areas of devolution through Scottish Chambers of Commerce network. Our focus and efforts continue to be economic growth and sustainability for our local businesses. Young people bring fresh eyes and ideas to the business together with experience of social media etc that growing businesses need. The Chamber is delighted to celebrate being the first Chamber in Scotland to receive the Good Practice Award for Investors in Young People. This accreditation gives recognition to the hard work which the Chamber Team has put in and for which they must be congratulated. Supporting the sustainability and success of Prestwick Airport has been a key focus for the Chamber. We are pleased that its future is firmly acknowledged in the Scottish Government’s Strategic Vision for the Airport and we are committed to working with them. I attended the joint Trump and Prestwick Airport conference with a number of colleagues from the Chamber on 14 November. I am really excited to see the first tangible sign of positive new business coming to the airport. Onwards and upwards to an even more successful 2015 for Ayrshire businesses!

Bob Leitch was presented his award at the Annual General Meeting of Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday 10th September by current CEO Val Russell. A delighted Val said: “The Board unanimously agreed there was no one more deserving of this award and I have had the privilege of working with Bob and feel honoured to present his honorary membership.”

Small and medium businesses across the UK could face carrying out more complex calculations to work out holiday pay after a recent Employment Tribunal ruling. The UK government has announced plans to create a taskforce to consider the consequences of the Employment Appeal Tribunal’s landmark ruling in Bear Scotland versus Fulton case requiring

Small businesses will require additional payroll and national insurance costs and are likely to feel the brunt of the changes if not given adequate support. Adam Marshall, Executive Director of Policy and Public Affairs at the British Chambers of Commerce: “This ruling is damaging for businesses across the UK, firms could be at risk of incurring significant financial losses.” However, the realisation of this ruling in practice may not be as financially crippling as initially thought. The additional elements only need to be included in holiday pay for the four weeks of annual leave guaranteed under EU law, and not the additional 1.6 weeks required under UK law.

TRUMP TEAMS UP WITH PRESTWICK AIRPORT
American businessman enters into a partnership with airport Glasgow Prestwick Airport will become the European hub for Donald Trump air operations.

The Trump Organisation said the airport provided the “perfect gateway for private and corporate jet access” to Trump Turnberry, which is 20 miles away.
The Trump Organisation has agreed to work with facility bosses and use its connections in the aviation and tourist industry to try and encourage more airlines to use the facility. Mr Trump made the announcement with airport chief executive Iain Cochrane and South Ayrshire Council leader Bill McIntosh. The New York-based businessman said: “We are thrilled to be partnering with Glasgow Prestwick Airport.
“They have a tremendous facility with a unique rich history.
Mr Cochrane said: “Forging a new partnership between the airport and The Trump Organisation will undoubtedly be mutually beneficial to both parties however it will also bring significant opportunities for the region as more inbound visitors travel to visit the legendary Trump Turnberry Resort.”

Julie McGahan, Programme Manager for the Scottish Living Wage Accreditation Initiative said: “Utopia Computers are leading the way in Scotland by joining the Living Wage Employer movement. “As well as being the first Living Wage Employer in Kilmarnock, they are the first computer manufacturer in Scotland to make this commitment to their staff. It’s our hope that other
businesses will follow suit, and recognise that the Living Wage makes a difference- not only for the individual, but for society and for business”. The computer retailer’s Director, Craig Hume, said it had “made a commitment to our team to adopt the Living Wage framework as soon as it became financially viable”. “There is a misconception that working for a smaller company automatically means you are lower paid, this is certainly not always the case. Rather than looking solely to the government to increase the minimum wage, I think that the responsibility also lies with companies who are seeing growth and paying their employees appropriately.” 20 year old, Cameron McGill, Technician at Utopia, added: “The living wage increase has provided my family and I more stability. It gives us a healthy amount of income to live comfortably, rather than just getting by, payday to payday.”

INDIAN MARKET OFFERS HUGE GROWTH

In 2012, Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry teamed up with GlaxoSmithKline to provide funding for local businesses to offer Modern Apprenticeships to young people. O’Neil’s Gas Services Ltd successfully applied to receive funding to allow them to hire an apprentice over a four year period. Robbie McLarnon, 19, is currently in his second year of his apprenticeship and alternates his weeks working and attending
City of Glasgow College.
The Chamber caught up with Robbie to find out how he was getting on. He said: “I’m really enjoying it. I saw the job advert in the local paper, researched the role and then applied.
Being one of the world’s largest fast growing economies, with a growth rate over 5%, India is a must for UK companies looking to expand.
“I’ll be in the office about half past seven in the morning and will fill out job sheets from the previous day and then find out what jobs we have today.
Whether it’s selling luxury and branded goods to India’s aspirational consumers or setting up manufacturing operations in one of India’s colossal new Industrial corridors there are opportunities to be found for nearly every company.
This growth is driven by India’s rapidly growing middle class, and because India has a population of 1.2 billion people, these emerging consumers are expected to amount to a staggering 267 million by 2015.

GROWING THE DESIGN BUSINESS FROM THE GARDEN Prestwick based design and branding company atom is about to hit a huge milestone. March next year sees its 8th birthday. A momentous time for Tom McCrorie, who runs his design business from his home office in his garden. atom is also the only South Ayrshire designer to be approved as part of the prestigious DBA (Design Business Association). The Design Business Association (or DBA) is the trade organisation for the design industry in the UK. In recent years, the association has been placing great emphasis on promoting standards and best practice within the design industry, offering a wealth of information to clients in need of advice and guidance.

I am just as capable of getting involved in smaller branding and design projects for more local clients. I essentially help you to ‘brand your brand’. And there is a difference. Too many designers don’t know the difference.”

TASTE AYRSHIRE TAKES TO THE SEAS! Taste Ayrshire has taken to the water in a partnership to promote the work of the area’s food and drink producers. Fine Food hampers filled with a selection of food and drink produced in Ayrshire can be found on the Clyde Challenger – a 60ft ocean racing yacht that is used for corporate days out. The cruiser, owned by Lewis Learning, decided to offer their guests a little something extra when they were on board and Taste Ayrshire’s hamper was exactly that. Taste Ayrshire board member Howard Wilkinson explained that the hampers offer a little experience of Ayrshire and are proving to be a very successful addition to the group’s promotion. He said: “The Hampers are proving to be a flexible asset for Taste Ayrshire. Those who get one get to experience the great produce that is available here in Ayrshire. “We were delighted with the partnership with Lewis Learning and it’s great to see
the hampers are proving to be a hit with his customers.” Glenn Porter of Lewis Learning added: “Our involvement with Taste Ayrshire and their food hampers has allowed us to provide our corporate guests with something that extra bit special. “During their trips out on our first generation round the world Clipper race yacht, Clyde Challenger’s guests have been able to enjoy fresh, local produce. LOOKING FORWARD TO ANOTHER 25 YEARS
Now under new ownership, The Herbary, Troon, is planning for another 25 years in the seaside town. New proprietor, Claire O’Donnell, took control of the boutique in September this year. It is also her first ever business venture so it was one she had to be sure was worth taking that first step. After doing her research, The Herbary was‘too good an opportunity to pass her by’and on 1st September, Claire took the plunge and called the shop her own. Claire, originally from Troon but now lives in Glasgow, comes from a retail background. After graduating from the University of Glasgow in 2001, she has worked for Arcadia, M&Co and most recently Slaters. “Retail is just what I know,”explains Claire, who hopes to bring her buying, planning and customer service experiences to The Herbary to build on an already solid business model. “I want customers to be excited when they enter the shop, their eyes darting from one display to another, and to be able to feel relaxed in our luxurious shopping environment.”
Claire’s parents still live in her childhood home in Troon and although Claire now lives in Glasgow she feels right back at‘home’ driving into Troon every day. “I always knew we were lucky to grow up in Troon but as a child you don’t appreciate how lucky. Now that I have my own business in Troon, I realise that the independent shops, restaurants and of course the‘fresh sea air’make it a great place to be.” The Herbary will also be launching a new range of jewellery from local Troon designer, Euan McWhirter. Euan began his career designing for jewellery legends Erickson Beamon. Euan embarked upon creating his own vision of luxury, launching his collection in 2010. Euan is excited to launch his collection at The Herbary and to be‘back in Troon, his hometown’ Claire has joined the Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce and hopes to draw upon the networking opportunities offered by their other members and has already hosted a shopping evening with the Troon Ladies Circle showing a support to the local community.

this gap in the market Gayle started up4learning, which offers tutoring to children aged 7-11 years. Up4learning operates at Gayle’s studio in Prestwick offering the benefit of tutoring in the studio that is completely distractionfree, ensuring the children can focus fully on the tasks in front of them. The project has been that successful that Gayle is now opening another studio in Troon in 2015. Gayle ensures the sessions are fun and full of active learning by matching children alongside others working on similar tasks. Up4learning is the brainwave of experienced primary teacher, Gayle McCrorie. After many years of teaching in the state and private sector, Gayle discovered a gap in the market. Tutoring was being aimed at secondary school children, whilst interest clubs were being aimed at primary school children. With her Primary school background, Gayle knew from personal experience that parents of younger children were often frustrated by the gaps in their child’s learning and struggled to fill them through homework tasks, which often ended in tantrums – from both parties! Ayrshire Business Awards 2014 Oh what a night… as some of Ayrshire’s best businesses came together for the fifth annual Ayrshire Business Awards in October. Seamill Hydro was the venue for the gala night that celebrated the success of Ayrshire Businesses over the last 12 months as the winners from the 14 categories were announced by BBC Sport presenter Hazel Irvine. In July 2014 the UK Government launched strategic project to select the site for the UK’s first spaceport. The aim is to ensure the UK space industry can grow strongly by having a domestic capability for launching the new generation of small satellites using the latest horizontal launch space vehicles. The Government is aiming to select the site in mid-2015 after receiving detailed proposals from the competing sites. These include Newquay in Cornwall and the Moray Firth airfields Lossiemouth and Kinross.

Prestwick however is the most developed and perhaps the most capable location. Prestwick Airport was established in 1935 as a site for elementary flight training for ab-initio RAF pilots as part of the UK Government’s response to the military build-up in Germany ahead of the Second World War. The airport site was selected due to the consistently favourable weather conditions experienced in this area of South Ayrshire. The airfield is surrounded by high ground - all four quadrants - and this affords it protection from the vast
majority of adverse weather phenomena. This unique Ayrshire microclimate has enabled the airfield to benefit from favourable cloud bases and excellent surface visibility. This factor contributed to it becoming the dominant transatlantic ferry port for US and Canadian built aircraft entering the European war theatre. It subsequently became the primary gateway for long-haul transatlantic passenger operations into Scotland. The airfield was heavily developed with a full concrete base underpinning its 3000m runway and extensive hard standing. A broad aerospace and engineering industry was established in the area to provide aircraft build, modification and repair capabilities, emerging in the post war era as Scottish Aviation before being absorbed into British Aerospace in 1977. A further 1,905m cross runway was later added. Prestwick and its local population have welcomed many types of aircraft operations over the years including military fighters, large wide body jets and the largest specialist transports and Antonovs. It was also a frequent training location for Concorde flight crews giving the local airspace controllers experience at defining and controlling special aircraft inbound and outbound trajectories as well as deconflicting flight paths with other commercial and military traffic. Transport links to Prestwick have been progressively developed since its formation with a mainline rail station on site, fuel offloading siding and unbroken motorway links directly from the airport to the backbone
of the UK’s motorway network. Recent development of the M77 and Glasgow M74 southern orbital extension means that by road Prestwick is now only 30 minutes from the centre of Glasgow, 1 hour 20 minutes from Edinburgh Airport, less than 2 hours from the border with England and only 6 hours 15 minutes from London Heathrow. Prestwick’s bid for this critical future in aviation is being led on behalf of the airport and South Ayrshire Council by Stuart Mcintyre, grandson of the original founder Group Captain DF Mcintyre. Integrating every aspect of Prestwick’s wide ranging capability is enhanced by his broad appreciation of the airports industrial and operational history. Prestwick continues to be engaged in passenger operations, the structure of the airline industry currently favours the bases at Glasgow and Edinburgh with Prestwick playing a more strategic aerospace and aviation role as a base of freight, strategic diversion and hijack, executive transport, military transit, search and rescue operations as well as maintaining a strong industrial capability both on the airfield and in the immediate vicinity. Mr Mcintyre explained: “With its favourable meteorological patterns, over sea take-off paths, substantial developed airfield, excellent local skills base, direct motorway and rail links and attractive business and industrial footprint, Prestwick is well placed to launch the UK’s first Spaceport and support the growth of the UK’s space industry.

A team from KA Leisure travelled to London to make their final presentation and although they missed out on the top prize at the Flame Awards Ball at Telford International Centre in July, they received high praise from the judges. GLEBE PRIMARY’S WORLD OF WORK DAY CREATIVE CAREERS Queen Margaret Academy, Art & Design Department recently hosted a Creative Industries Event for their S2 pupils. The aim was to raise awareness of Creative Industries as a career path.
Glebe Primary recently held an employer event for their Primary 2 pupils, ably supported by P7 guides, The “World of Work” afternoon formed part of the topic “People Who Help Us in our Community”. We were very lucky to have a wide variety of businesses and services represented on the day. Pupils carried out their personal research, asking questions and using their ICT skills taking photographs and videos.

The feedback from our visitors was also extremely positive and, although perhaps a little nervous at the thought of being interviewed by such young children, they found the experience enjoyable and were very impressed by the children’s abilities. The day was a terrific success. It is important to help children, even at this early stage, to understand the options and opportunities in the world of work and to provide them with goals and encourage a motivation to learn for the future. Pupils attended the Art and Design Department in the morning and had the opportunity to visit various stalls with artists, designers and representatives from Further and Higher Education Institutions. Pupils heard presentations from invited guests and then had the opportunity to ask questions and look through folios and examples of work. Pupils left the department feeling inspired and armed with a wealth of knowledge from this exciting and memorable event.
MOCK INTERVIEWS 40 pupils selected from Cumnock, Doon and Kyle Academy recently attended a mock interviews event held in the Aviator Suite of Prestwick Airport organised by Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce. Following months of in school preparation pupils were chosen to attend the event to help prepare them more for the world of work. The day began with a motivational speech from Dr Peter Hughes who promoted careers within the engineering industry. Pupils were then given the opportunity to go through a mock interview with local employers before taking part in group assessments set by South Ayrshire Council and Stellar UK Ltd. After a rest over lunch pupils were then taken through college course options by Ayrshire College. Pupils commented that they felt they had gained more confidence and felt more prepared for the real world of interviews. FHIONN ENGINEERED HIS WAY INTO WORK EXPERIENCE Fhionn of Largs Academy completed his work experience at Scott Engineering Co Ltd. We feel the placement is a very worthwhile exercise for young people as it gives them an insight into engineering and a good grounding as to whether they really want to pursue a career in this field.
AYRSHIRE PUPILS ARE TOP CLASS Keen fourth, fifth and sixth year pupils from 12 secondary schools from all over Ayrshire took the opportunity to find out more about careers in the NHS at a special Awareness Day at University Hospital Ayr. The event is one of several initiatives and programmes through which NHS Ayrshire & Arran supports local schools, where 120 pupils attended.
As my work experience was during Ayrshire BusinessWeek, I attended the Business to Business Exhibition NATALIE KYLE ACADEMY and learned how businesses trade and promote their company. The social media and advertising companies caught my attention as they were different and a business idea I hadn’t thought of before. The next day I helped out with the Ladies Lunch during registration and then heard from Marjorie Calder fromThe Big Partnership about succeeding in business. I rounded off my week at the‘Cream of Ayrshire’ice cream competition, so my week has been about food as well as business which can’t be bad. This has been an excellent opportunity to understand a working environment as well as getting an insight into the Chamber of Commerce. I am interested in a career within the business sector so it has been very worthwhile.

Belmont Academy emerged victorious at the end of the morning session, while Wellington School took the title in the afternoon. Both received a trophy donated by the education teams from the three local authorities in Ayrshire.

Lacking confidence, ACADEMY a pre-arranged visit to the garage reassured John and he had a great week. You can tell by the smile on his face how much he enjoyed and benefited from his placement. A common problem for pupils is a lack of urgency in applying for placements particularly with‘self-founds.’Pupils and parents fail to realise that a couple of months to organise these places is not long in the business world.Work experience is mentioned in June allowing three months for organisation. The Scottish base for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust was opened at Largs Yacht Haven on the Firth of Clyde by Dame Ellen MacArthur.

Ayrshire and Arran Tourism Champion Volunteers have been offering a warm and friendly welcome to visitors at Prestwick Airport over the last month. The volunteers are enthusiastic and dedicated local people who provide a warm welcome and information to visitors to the area, giving their free time, with the ultimate aim of encouraging more people to visit the area and stay longer.
The new base marks the expansion for the ten year old charitable trust, based in Cowes Isle of Wight and set up by Dame MacArthur, to assist young people recovering from cancer and leukaemia through sailing. The Trust has taken up residence at the 700 berth marina and plans to increase the number of young people coming through the recovery and confidence building programme to 200 by 2017.

In September members enjoyed a fantastic Behind the Scenes tour at the famous William Grants Distillery in Girvan, they were welcomed in the boardroom before breaking into groups for a tour of the plant. REGISTER FOR £450 MILLION INVESTMENT PLANNED OUR FREE FOR LOUDOUN CASTLE NETWORK EVENTS The Loudoun Castle Project has submitted a planning in principle application to East Ayrshire Council for the creation of a two phased £450 million holiday and leisure destination that will bring up to 2,500 much needed jobs to the area.
The ambitious plan will see the 610-acre former family theme park transformed into an all-weather resort featuring 450 luxury lodges, 12 glamping pitches, a lake and leisure development, including indoor sports facilities and an indoor subtropical water park. The site will also feature a brand new Loudoun distillery. Loudoun Castle itself will be stabilised and leading conservation specialists will be assessing what can be achieved beyond stabilisation.

Nick Laister, senior director at RPS Planning & Development, which is submitting the planning application on behalf of The Loudoun Castle Project, said: "I am delighted to be submitting a planning application for a development that is going to realise that vision and have such a significant positive economic impact on the area.
Timescales are subject to planning but if successful, work would begin in 2016 with an anticipated opening during 2018 and phased development beyond.
The clear commitment and preplanning investment by the project team to secure planning permission for the development of the site has been led by private investment firm EIF.

VOCA TELLS AN i3 SUCCESS STORY A major expansion – in terms of space and jobs – is the latest chapter in an Irvine Bay success story in client contact and servicing business Voca. Voca moved in to its first office suite at i3 Ayrshire Innovation Centre just over a year ago, when it took 1200 sq. ft. of office space for its contact management business. Two Ayrshire Businesses picked up prizes in the SLTN awards in November. Buzzworks Holdings and Si! collected the winning awards in their category – Si! took home the gold in the Family Outlet of the Year award sponsored by Britvic and Buzzworks was named Independent Multiple Operator of the Year.
Si! was shortlisted for the Britvic sponsored award alongside The Leadburn Inn (Midlothian) and Tony Macaroni (Livingston). MC for the night was none other than Glasgow comedian Kevin Bridges, who announced Si! as the winner to ensure another SLTN Award came back to Ayrshire.

UK businesses are not trying hard enough to keep their workers safe, says the Sentencing Council, and should be fined up to £20m for “corporate manslaughter” if their negligence leads to death. The government body, which advises judges on appropriate sentencing, says that existing fines are too small to hurt most companies financially and so fail to incentivise them to improve their safety measures. This will extend to food-related violations, with the companies whose food health and safety offences prove fatal could be fined up to £10m. The guidelines, which are still in draft stage, will be opened up to public consultation in order to gather the perspectives of those working in industry. “We want to ensure that these crimes don’t pay and these businesses that put people at risk by flouting their responsibilities are undercutting those that maintain proper standards and do their best to keep people safe,” said Michael Caplan QC, a member of the Sentencing Council.”
