PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

WELCOME TO THE AUTUMN EDITION OF YOUR BUSINESS

I hope all of you made the most of what summer we did get in Ayrshire or enjoyed a break in sunnier climates. I haven’t quite managed to get away however I did enjoy a fantastic day of networking with the Ayrshire Chamber on the beautiful Island of Arran. It was great to be back on Arran with the Chamber and we packed a lot in to our day with visits to the Isle of Arran Distillery, Arran Gin, the Auchrannie Resort, Arran Cheese Company and Arran Aromatics. This edition of Your Business focuses on brands ‘Made in Ayrshire’ and all these companies are testament to the wonderful offerings that Ayrshire has.

However, now that the summer holidays are already becoming a distant memory, and Autumn is on its way, we are looking forward to some more Chamber events,

HOW CAN RURAL BUSINESSES GET THE IMPROVED INTERNET CONNECTIVITY THEY NEED? By Mike Ianiri, Equinox

YOUR BUSINESS | AUTUMN 2019

Unfortunately, businesses in rural areas are still held back by poor telecoms coverage, particularly high-speed internet connectivity and 4G coverage. Ofcom’s latest report shows that only 41% of rural areas have complete 4G coverage, less than half the coverage levels in urban areas. The figures are similar for broadband coverage (a common problem across EU member states). How can these issues be tackled? 1) RURAL ROAMING Introducing roaming in the UK could make a massive difference to rural areas. So far, Ofcom has failed to ask operators in the UK to allow roaming. Sometimes known as wholesale access, rural roaming means you can move between mobile operators’ networks based on signal strength. As your provider’s signal drops, you can move to another provider. With 91% of the UK landmass getting signal from at least one provider, this would significantly improve connectivity availability. How the operators decide to share out the costs is up to them! 2) 700MHZ TO RURAL AREAS FIRST 5G is set to, supposedly, transform how we use data. The high frequency wavelengths used by 5G only travel in straight lines and over much shorter distances than 3/4G. However, Ofcom’s release of the 700Mhz frequency band would allow 5G rollout to much more of the country. It would be a little slower, but that’s better than nothing. It’s encouraging that Ofcom has set rural coverage requirements within the contracts the mobile operators are bidding for. 3) MAKE USE OF EU FUNDING AVAILABLE National and EU governments have made £billions available to support the rollout of telecoms connectivity. The UK government has spent over £6 billion, through BDUK, to take coverage up to 95%. European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) grant funding is available with 921 million Euros allocated between 2014 & 2020 to help rural economies.

6

The key is how this money is spent, and if it will be enough to bring rural connectivity to 100%. This seems unlikely. Even if they do manage it, they may find that the connectivity they have funded is already out of date. 4) USE 4G INSTEAD OF FIBRE High-speed broadband and fibre are usually words used in the same sentence. However, the cost of rolling out fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) is as high as £100,000 per cabinet. This cost cannot be passed to the user and the operators aren’t prepared to pay these figures, so it isn’t being implemented. Government support (BDUK) has taken coverage up to 95.1% of UK premises. Although satellite used to be an alternative go-to option, it is becoming less popular, more expensive (in particular the installation), and 4G now, generally, offers better speeds. So, in the areas where high speed broadband isn’t available, 4G can be an acceptable substitute. With data costs reducing on an, almost, daily basis, 4G doesn’t have to be an expensive option unless your business is an exceptionally high data user. 5) MAKE USE OF CO-WORKING SPACES Micro-businesses (1-4 staff) and remote workers can benefit from making use of the growing number of rural co-working spaces. Suitably positioned so they have high-speed connectivity, they bring a range of benefits to their members: 1. Providing high-speed connectivity 2. Enabling business networking 3. Sharing of best practice 4. Face to face contact 5. Getting out of the house! It’s likely we’ll see more of these in rural areas and even if the government does take proper action to improve rural connectivity, it’s likely many people will still opt to use these hubs. Telecoms is an important element in boosting the rural economy. Let’s hope that action is taken soon to achieve what rural businesses need. Web: www.equinoxcomms.co.uk Twitter: @CommsEquinox

SCOTTISH KEEPSAKES FROM THE HEART OF AYRSHIRE IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY TO START TALKING ABOUT CHRISTMAS! Owner and independent retailer, Toni Dawson, and her team in Geraldo’s of Largs always need to think ahead, particularly leading up to their busiest time of year. As producers of their own artisan ice cream and specialists in handmade chocolates, premium spirits and Scottish food and drink it’s no wonder their luxury gift hampers and in store tastings are such a big hit with visitors to the town. Geraldo’s works closely with many Scottish food and drink producers and Ayrshire & Arran is a world class source. James McLehry of the Arran Chocolate Factory is one of Toni’s main suppliers of their mouth-watering handmade chocolates particularly their best-selling Parisian Creams created especially for Geraldo’s. For the whisky lover, there’s a carefully selected range of single malts and cask strength whiskies with Toni choosing to work with as many independent distilleries as possible,

none more so than the Isle of Arran Distillery in Lochranza. There’s a weekly focus on Scotch whisky and during Scottish Food & Drink Fortnight, Arran’s cask finished malts will feature in the shop each ‘Whisky Wednesday.’ If gin is your tipple there are over 70 Scottish gins to choose from and it’s not surprising visitors to Largs choose Arran Gin, being the most locally produced gin in the area. In short, there is a huge range of award-winning Scottish food and drink produce available from the shop to include in a gift hamper or to take home as an indulgent treat for yourself. A small selection of gift hampers will be available to buy through their website this year at www.geraldos.co.uk or if you have a special occasion coming up or simply wish to send a thank you gift to someone why not email Geraldo’s now with your requirements to info@geraldos.co.uk or call direct on 01475 675200.

WHISKY WITH A PERSONAL TOUCH...

A

yrshire based independent whisky company, A. D. Rattray, have been selecting and maturing Scotland’s best casks of single malt whisky for over 150 years. Best known within Ayrshire for their Whisky Experience visitor attraction located in the village of Kirkoswald, people are often unaware that this renovated school building is also home to their award-winning whisky brands and export business. You can now find A. D. Rattray whiskies in over 20 countries worldwide. As well as their own branded whisky products, A. D. Rattray bottle exclusive whiskies for private labelling. They work with companies from a variety of industries to create their own corporate branded whisky or to personalise individual bottles as gifts, promotions or incentives. Their Private Label range offers an everchanging selection of single cask whiskies with a choice of flavours and styles, each with their own unique characteristics and from distilleries across Scotland. As is the nature of single cask whiskies, the bottles produced from one cask are limited, adding exclusivity to these whiskies. Labelling includes your chosen text and logo in their label style or you can provide your own label design.

The team at A. D. Rattray also host private whisky tastings for corporate hospitality and events. Tastings can be hosted at their own Whisky Experience venue or at events venues across Ayrshire. The whiskies available to taste include many limited editions, giving you a distinctive experience and allowing you to create the event that suits your guests. Enjoy the unique atmosphere of their private tasting room, sit around the antique table and discover more about the heritage of Scotch as you learn to nose and taste some beautiful drams.

Or let their hosts bring the experience to you. A. D. Rattray collaborates with Ayrshire venues to set up larger group tastings in dramatic settings such as Culzean Castle, Burns Cottage, Glenapp Castle and Turnberry. Imagine enjoying a dram in the cottage where Robert Burns was born, or on the terrace at Turnberry overlooking Ailsa Craig.

Enhance your event with personalised miniatures – perfect for table settings. The beautiful handwritten labels on their Personalised Whisky range offers another option to impress. Available in 3 bottle sizes, these whiskies are hand-filled straight from the casks in their Whisky Experience in Kirkoswald, with the bottle then sealed in wax and completed with a handwritten label. Plan a visit and you can witness the bottling of your very own whisky and write the label yourself.

Or their whisky tasting gift sets – a warm welcome for your guests as they arrive.

ICELAND ROCKS A tourism lecturer from Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) has been learning about what makes Iceland a ‘hot’ travel destination on a study tour to the Nordic island. Claire Donaldson, who teaches tourism-related modules to Rural Business and Countryside Management students at SRUC’s Ayr campus, visited Iceland as part of an Erasmus+ funded ‘learning journey’. The trip took in three different lagoons – including the iconic Blue Lagoon, and several of the country’s spectacular geomorphological features such as the Geysir and Gullfoss, as well as providing the opportunity to visit some of the most successful diversified farms on the Golden Circle – a tourist route in southern Iceland.

Image: Gullfoss (Golden Falls) in the South West of Iceland

“They were willing to talk about everything from financial issues to horticultural science, as well as giving us hands-on experiences and recipes to take away.”

At the end of the week, the group of tourism professionals was given a presentation from Visit Iceland which highlighted how the country has managed to overcome the financial crash in 2008 and the volcano eruption in 2010, to grow its tourist industry.

One of the more unusual highlights of the trip was the experience of eating in a restaurant next to cows on the other side of a glass wall.

Claire said: “It was an incredible experience. I feel very lucky to have been selected for such a fantastic and unique opportunity.

She now plans to integrate what she has learnt about Iceland’s niche rural and food tourism into her courses at SRUC, which cover everything from eco and natural heritage tourism to countryside and recreation.

“It gave us the chance to compare businesses and how they manage to appeal to both residents and visitors alike. Storytelling and authenticity played a significant role in all of the businesses we visited.

“It gives you a real sense of respecting and appreciating your food – as well as highlighting zero food miles,” said Claire.

CHAMBER MEMBER PLEDGES TO SUPPORT MACMILLAN An Ayrshire firm has pledged to raise a massive £15,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

YOUR BUSINESS | AUTUMN 2019

Hyspec Engineering, based in Kilmarnock, has chosen Macmillan as its charity partner for 2019/20. They hope to raise thousands of pounds from employee fundraising, with the staff’s efforts being generously matched by the company.

12

Julie Johnston, HR Manager said; “Hyspec raise funds for local charities every year and this year we wanted to continue our fundraising but get involved in something a bit different. We want to support a charity that would mean something to everyone, and hopefully encourage the workforce to have some fun along the way. Given the support this charity offers to people with cancer and their loved ones, we can all appreciate just how worthy this cause is

and just how important their work is. Michelle Jeffcott from Macmillan spent lots of time with our charity committee providing information on the amazing work they do. She was also full of some great ideas, and so passionate about her job so from then we were sold.” We have set ourselves a record challenge in raising £15,000 for Macmillan. We are delighted to be partnering with them and we are looking forward to what is to come.” Macmillan Fundraising Manager, Michelle Jeffcott said; “We are delighted to have been chosen as Hyspec’s charity partner for 2019 and 2020. We’re here to help everyone with cancer live life as fully as they can, providing physical, financial and emotional support. So whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.

We are almost entirely funded by donations, so we couldn’t provide our services without people fundraising for us or donating to us. The money raised will go towards helping Macmillan support people affected by cancer at the time they need us most. We are looking forward to working with the staff to help them come up with some great fundraising ideas and hope they are just as excited as we are.” The money raised from the partnership will be used to fund Macmillan’s vital cancer services including specialist nurses working throughout the NHS, a nurse-run support line and grants for cancer patients with money problems. For information on fundraising for Macmillan as a business, group or individual, call 0300 1000 200 or visit www.macmillan.org.uk

By Ayrshire Chamber CEO, Val Russell

I was fortunate to travel to Iceland as part of a group of UK wide Food, Drink and Tourism Businesses on a learning journey visit funded by Erasmus+. My case study group was looking specifically at how Iceland is so good at telling the story of the country, their products and the passion of the people telling the stories. Why is storytelling so powerful? A good story can truly influence a visit to a tourist attraction in a significant way – it’s what you will always remember and repeat Employee engagement research shows that one of the most important sources of personal engagement and motivation is the need to do work that is ‘meaningful’ or ‘counts’ If a business can help employees to understand their connection to their work, and the employee feels they are part of the story, then they will be a natural advocate. They will take on the stories of the business and make them their own. This is particularly important for visitor economy businesses who are selling experiences

Benefits of storytelling for businesses & destinations • Brand-building/development • Differentiation in a global market • Building customer loyalty • Word of mouth marketing • Repeat visits and recommendations • Employee engagement & satisfaction • Increased sales

NEW BUSINESS OWNER? DON’T FORGET THE ‘DULL’ STUFF!

What is your story? A story provides the context for a business strategy, making it meaningful and allowing it to connect with other stories, feelings and emotions about the company that people already have. TOP TIPS: • Use your own words and real, relevant examples • Use everyday language and not ‘business jargon’ • It needs to cover the ‘bad bits’ not just the good bits—no ‘Pollyanna’ stories ever succeed • Keep it simple - own it – express your own feelings, emotions and anecdotes Iceland may have lagoons, geysers and thermals but Ayrshire has many natural assets, locations, products and wonderful people so let’s share OUR story with the rest of the world.

One of the key objectives of the Ayrshire Chamber is to cultivate a PL ATINU strong business ecosystem. This M should not only help Ayrshire’s existing businesses thrive, but encourage new entities to enter the space. And for those new entities entering the space, embarking on a new, and perhaps their first, business venture will undoubtedly be a busy and exciting time. Understandably, the first thought of many new business owners is to simply roll up their sleeves and get to work on bringing your ideas to life. However, as commendable as this get up and go attitude is, it often leads to some of the less exciting, but still very important, administrative elements of running a business being forgotten about entirely.

PARTN ER

What can often be overlooked are questions such as, how sole traders pay Income Tax and National Insurance; how to legally formalise business operations via Articles of Association; how to meet the legal requirements of providing a workplace pension; and how company directors can protect the continuity of their businesses in the event of death or critical illness. The list really could go on and on. However if business owners, both old and new, can be proactive in answering these questions, then they will only add to the robustness of their overall business. Within the Ayrshire business community there is an array of excellent financial services and legal firms who have the expertise that could help you navigate these challenges. If you are a business owner and feel like you can relate to these issues, then 1825 would be more than happy to share their knowledge, so please do not hesitate to get in touch. www.1825.com Ryan.Watt@1825.com

The Victorian Listed building at Lamlash House in Newmilns has undergone an almost constant programme of restoration since being purchased by Chamber members Gordon McDonald and Johnathan Muirhead in 2006. More recently, when the adjoining former Royal Bank of Scotland premises closed in 2014 after 124 years, the pair were quick to secure the purchase of the remainder of the building thereby returning the property to private ownership for the first time in 105 years.

YOUR BUSINESS | AUTUMN 2019

A further programme of internal restoration was then researched, planned and successfully completed by the owners over the following 4 years to sympathetically reinstate the character of the former Bank which had been removed over the past century. Part of the work included the ingenious conversion of the former Bank vault into the Art Deco styled Strongroom Bar which is believed to be the smallest licensed premises in Ayrshire which despite its size, boasts a selection of over 50 gin varieties.

16

The formal launch of the Lamlash House Events business took place earlier in the year and was conducted by William Stafford, Deputy Lieutenant of Ayrshire and Arran who unveiled a specially commissioned wall plaque to commemorate the contribution made by the Bank Agent in 1890 when the property was initially built. Amongst the wealth of areas of architectural interest at the property, the Lamlash House staircase has one the finest preserved examples of literary and floral themed stained glass windows in Ayrshire. The premises have now been returned to their former opulent Victorian glory and are available for a range of fine dining, Afternoon Tea, Corporate and other private events including bespoke weddings on an exclusive use basis. WILLIAM KENNEDY CELEBRATES A SIGNIFICANT MILESTONE OF 30 YEARS IN BUSINESS Looking back at the early days of the company, William Kennedy could never have imagined that his sole trader plumbing business would grow to one that now employs 30 members of staff and provides a vast range of products and services to customers across Ayrshire and beyond. As a Plumber to trade and with a drive for success, William Kennedy Plumbers was formed on the 2nd October 1989 by Director Willie Kennedy, at the young age of 23.

YOUR BUSINESS | AUTUMN 2019

As a new company starting out, Willie knew he had a lot to prove but was determined to make the business a success. Undertaking all plumbing and heating jobs single-handedly, Willie thrived on meeting new people and providing excellent customer service, and as a result, quickly noticed his customer list increasing through word of mouth.

22

In order to meet with the increasing customer demand, Willie recruited additional tradesmen not only for plumbing works but over the years in other areas including roofing, joinery and general building works that would help increase the company’s product offering and due to this, William Kennedy Plumbers grew from strength to strength. More recently a major turning point for the company came in June 2016 when Willie decided

I’m delighted with everything we have achieved so far. As a plumber to trade, I am proud of the various services we now offer and the fantastic team we have on board.” Speaking of the company’s trademark red vans and how the brand has grown over the years, he added:

We are continuing to introduce new products and services to our portfolio to ensure we stay ahead of the times and meet customer demand.

to expand the business further and open a brand-new bathroom, kitchen and heating showroom on New Road, Ayr. After this, the William Kennedy Plumbers brand truly became an all trades company offering a range of services including plumbing, heating, roofing, boiler servicing, joinery and bathroom and kitchen installation and design to name a few. Celebrating the last 30 years in business, Willie Kennedy said: “The William Kennedy brand has come such a long way from our modest beginnings, and

“When I first started the business, I initially ordered a new white van but just before delivery and the start date for my new business, I was told I would have to wait several weeks before it would be delivered. With time then being of the essence, I decided to go for a red van that the supplier had in stock, so it still amazes me to this day how many people recognise or comment on our brand with its red vans which came about purely by chance!” Discussing his future plans for the business, Willie said: “We are continuing to introduce new products and services to our portfolio to ensure we stay ahead of the times and meet customer demand. We recently introduced 3D virtual reality software into our showroom allowing customers to step inside their newly designed bathroom or kitchen before the installation has even taken place which has been a great success. The William Kennedy brand is in great shape and I am really excited to see what’s in store for the company going forward.”

THREE QUARTERS OF SMES KEEP QUIET OVER LATE PAYMENTS IN FEAR OF LOSING CUSTOMERS Growth Street recently worked with the Small Business Commissioner, Paul Uppal, to launch a collaborative whitepaper ‘Taking Notice of UK Business’. The whitepaper, which was published on 11th July follows a survey on UK SMEs, exploring their experiences of unfair payment practices – in particular from larger businesses.

JEN MCGUFFIE BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER GROWTH STREET

The survey shows that 43% of SMEs we surveyed have experienced late payments from larger businesses. Furthermore, when looking at how this breaks down, it appears medium-sized businesses get the worst of it. Nearly half said they’d been subject to late or otherwise unfair payment practices, while this drops to 38% when looking at small businesses. Asked about why SME decision-makers have been reluctant to act against unpaid invoices, 77% cited a fear of harming the relationship with their client. The second biggest concern was around damaging chances of getting paid at all, with 76% saying that the risk of not getting paid at all for their work may influence their taking action in relation to unpaid invoices. The Small Business Commissioner’s Office was launched by the Westminster Government in December 2017 to help promote fair payment practices for Britain's small businesses, support them in resolving payment disputes with larger businesses and bring about a wider culture change. Paul Uppal has recently released reports on G4S, Holland & Barrett and Jordans & Ryvita, criticising their payment practices following complaints made by small businesses. Have you been affected by late payments? If so let Jen know: jennifer.mcguffie@growthstreet.co.uk

AMBITIOUS BUSINESS GROWTH METHOD BORN IN AYRSHIRE YOUR BUSINESS | AUTUMN 2019

Described by one company as “Mixed Martial Arts for Business” - “Sort & Scale” has now been officially rolled-out across the UK by Ayrshire-based business consultancy firm ARG.

26

The programme takes companies with serious ambition through a process that implements areas to systematise their core business (Sort), turning existing revenue into a reliable machine to free up resources for step-change growth opportunities (Scale). It is the brainchild of ARG’s Founder, Jamie McCallum, a business strategy and innovation expert who has been coaching leaders of all types and size of businesses to develop growth strategies and deliver new products and services for over 10 years. He's also designed and delivered national innovation programmes on behalf of domestic and overseas

governments.

He said: "I've realised what frustrates business leaders the most is how existing support only helps them to "know what they don't know" without actually doing anything to help them execute. Typically an adviser looks smart for a day then disappears with their money and leaves them to it. In response we've designed one complete programme which identifies all the key ingredients present in highly successful growth companies (or indeed which are lacking when they fail) then puts all of those ingredients into place, utilising the best solutions we've found around the world for each component. We work with the business right through the execution phase because we're not interested

in looking smart for a day on some band-aid intervention. It takes at least a year to do this so it'll only work for us if it works for the company. In short, most programmes give you an action plan. This gives you a result." Later in 2019 ARG have ambitious plans to scaleup themselves by launching a training academy to certify other consultancies in different territories to deliver the methodology wherever they are. FAMILY PLUMBING AND HEATING FIRM WITH OVER 80 YEARS EXPERIENCE Chamber Member Darwin Johnstone Plumbing and Heating are a local company based in Ayr with over 80 years combined experience in the trade. As a family business, everything they do is based around quality at a competitive price. Working with reputable manufacturers to ensure customers have great aftercare they can offer up to 10 years warranty. But why replace your boiler now? In winter, a reputable gas company will be busy with breakdowns and burst pipes! A new boiler can take 1-3 days to install depending on how big the job is to do the job well. Do it ahead of winter and you won’t be left in the cold. What are the long-term benefits of replacing your boiler? In addition to the benefits of arranging a summer boiler replacement, the long-term benefits of a new, modern boiler lasts many years; • Reduced energy bills • Manufacturer warranty • Increased control over heating • Warmer homes and offices are a much more comfortable place to live and work • Modern boilers are much quieter in operation than older models

YOUR BUSINESS | AUTUMN 2019

• Reduced impact on the environment

30

If you are considering moving and think you won’t be able to experience these benefits it is worth remembering that a new boiler could add up to £8,000 to your premises value making it more appealing to potential buyers. The life expectancy of a new condensing boiler is between 10-15 years and a Combi boiler lifespan is about the same. It’s also important to arrange an annual service from a Gas Safe engineer to ensure the safe and efficient running of the boiler for the longest possible time. HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU NEED A FINANCIAL ADVISOR?

Often, our understanding of what a financial advisor is or does is unclear so here are a few headlines:-

Business Development and Operations Manager, Hazel Pearson, said “With ‘The Year of Coasts & Waters 2020’ fast approaching, we at Flamingo Yacht Charters, decided what better time to add yet another fantastic new boat to our fleet. Flamingo is the ideal yacht for exploring the waters of the Clyde and beyond. She is perfect for a corporate day out with colleagues or a longer trip with friends and family. She’s sails like a dream and motors well should the wind drop. She is very spacious both above and below deck and makes you feel very special whilst you are aboard.” When asked what clients think of the new boat, Hazel said “The response from our clients so far has been really positive, we already have a lot of bookings on her for the summer from clients from the UK, Europe and as far afield as Russia. If you would like to get out on her this year, we’ve got a couple of weeks in September and October available that you can snap up if you are quick. 1. Pensions – a financial advisor can assist people to plan for their retirement and cut through a lot of the myths about pensions. Understanding your pension is the first step to a more certain retirement. 2. Investments – a financial advisor can assist clients in making their money work for them. As an example, many people have money in Cash ISA’s returning very little. Making the right investments can provide what is often described as a “decent return” on ISA monies. 3. Protection – a financial advisor can help protect finances upon death or serious illness. Finally, a very emotional subject. If you have worked most of your life to build up savings, investments and own your home (or maybe you stand to inherit), how would you feel if long term care was required, and most of this was lost to pay for that care? This year saw the introduction of the ‘Curveball’ where businesses could announce a twist to their challenge. This would be similar to a real life problem that could arise and

is unique to each of the different businesses which meant that pupils would have to overcome the problem and make changes or re-plan their strategy to reach the desired outcome. The main aim of the challenge is to expose our young people to real life work situations to allow them to work together as a team and gain vital skills including communication, problem solving, decision making & leadership. 24 employers supported the project this year ranging from local entrepreneurs and small businesses to large multinational corporations.

Learn 4 Work has now been running in East Ayrshire for four years, Doon, Grange, Loudoun & Stewarton Academies participated. Pupils are taken off timetable and set a challenge which is presented to each group by the employer. The groups then work on and present their recommendations at the end of the final day to the business.

“Thanks DYW Ayrshire for this partnership. I was amazed by the young people and so proud of what was achieved.

A number of businesses have taken forward the ideas and recommendations from the pupils and have worked on these within their business which is great for the schools and the employers and also shows the value of the work the pupils are able to produce during the project. Last year, Yipworld, a charitable enterprise in East Ayrshire, took park in the Learn 4 Work project at Loudoun Academy and have recently turned the group’s idea into a reality with the development of ‘The Living Room’ which is an exciting facility transformed using the colours, textures, patterns and furniture suggested by the group during the project.

This year, Shire Housing Association took part in all four Learn 4 Work projects and set a challenge which asked pupils to create a ‘How to’ video and think of ideas the organisation could use to get young people involved in the community. The final videos from each school will be featured on Shire Housing’s website and will be shown at their AGM. Dawson Butchers in Muirkirk also took part in the project at Loudoun Academy and set the challenge to rebrand & redesign the shop front window graphics. The ideas and designs suggested by the pupils will be used in the final design for the shop front window.

I’d just like to say what a great experience it was. Working with the pupils and seeing how they manage the project and overcome the obstacles. It’s always interesting what ideas the pupils come up with and to include them in our business development.

NEWMILNS PRIMARY VISIT SAXEN Saxen were delighted to host the P5/6 and P7 Newmilns Primary pupils in our showroom and offices in May. The showroom tour went down well and the kids were particularly impressed with the moss wall, 3D wall art and the acoustic panels used for sound proofing office spaces, but I think what peaked their interest most was the gaming chairs! After having a tour of our showroom, the pupils were invited to design an office for their head teacher using products from our website. The pupils had expensive taste but I am sure the head teacher would have loved her new space! It was a pleasure to have the kids in our showroom and we hope it showed them the different job functions involved and may inspire them to explore design or sales roles in the future.

OUR SAXEN VISIT On Friday 10th May pupils from P5/6 and P7 visited the Saxen offices in Newmilns. They had invited us after they were at our careers fair a few months ago. Firstly we saw their website and created our own office then we designed a new office for our Head teacher. It was an expensive office that cost over ÂŁ2,000! We realised that online shopping for furniture is

really expensive! The second station was upstairs where we looked at the main area where some seating and lighting was on display and they told us how they use recycled plastic to make these sound proof boardings you can put on your walls in your office to prevent too much noise from the other offices. Finally on our tour we went upstairs to see more furniture, bigger and more eyecatching furniture to sit on. In the room next to that there were two offices, lots of chairs [Gaming chairs and office chairs.] After that we went to the top floor where the rest of the offices are located. Up there was this cool Wall art of 3D Stoney moss and other colourful wall art. We have learned a lot about furniture and the effort that goes into making them. Thank you Saxen for inviting us to your offices I hope other people will come and visit Saxen! P6 Pupils

ENGINEERING THE FUTURE AT GE

36

GE Caledonian recently welcomed 30 female S1 pupils from Auchenharvie, Belmont and Stewarton Academies for a day packed with engineering activity allowing them to ask questions and explore what goes on at the Prestwick site. The girls were tasked to build a rocket from recyclable materials which were then powered with water and air to achieve flight, with the winning team being those who reached the greatest distance. The young people were also given the opportunity to meet current staff in GE including a number of female apprentices and were taken on a tour of the shop floor. The tour was full of impressive sights, from deconstructed plane

engines to the preparation of highly valued tiny components. The Lego production line challenge focused on project management where each team competed against each other to build replica fan blades in the quickest time to fulfil a mock order request. The pupils soon realised this was not as easy as it first sounded as each team member could only be based at their particular station, the fan blades had to be built in a set order and any defects had to be sent back to the start. This challenge demonstrated the importance of time/task management and the cost implications of any errors in the process. This highly enjoyable event is in its third year and helps inspire the next generation of female engineers.

University of the West of Scotland held their annual Taster Event at their Ayr Campus in June, S5 & S6 pupils were invited from schools across Ayrshire to spend the morning at the campus and find out more about life at university. Pupils were given the opportunity to take part in a 90-minute workshop choosing from Nursing, Primary Education, Sports Coaching & Development or Performance, giving them a taster of what studying their chosen subject at university would be like. After the workshops, the university also offered campus tours and gave a presentation on different

VolunteersGUfrom Ayr Arts ILD AYR TOWN Guild each year arrange to HALL bring six or seven orchestral concerts by professional musicians to Ayr Town Hall. The 33rd season dates have been agreed but they have just lost their main sponsor! South Ayrshire Council, as a result of council cut backs that are affecting all parts of Scotland, has withdrawn its annual investment, formerly £25,000. Thus, after 32 years, they are seeking a new sponsor and are keen to develop audience numbers.
