PARTNERS FOR BUSINESS Ayrshire Chamber wishes to acknowledge the support of the following companies as sponsors of our Partners for Business programme.
My two years as President of the Chamber has whisked past quickly – time flies when one is enjoying oneself. It has been both an enlightening and enjoyable period. Enlightening because, as a member, I had not truly appreciated the range of services and benefits on offer from the Chamber, just the obvious ones I have come across or used e.g. training academy, HR service, Westfield Health and networking events. So much happens in the background and I have since learned the impact which the Chambers has, for example, in connecting businesses; being their voice at the national arena; promoting Ayrshire in and supporting international trade. Val Russell, CEO of the Chamber, mentioned in the last magazine of the continued support we are giving to the future of Prestwick airport. The Chamber board received a presentation from their chair Andrew Miller and welcomed the aspirations to make it a success. When Val and I met with the new MPs for Ayrshire, we were equally encouraged by their enthusiasm to support the development of a sustainable future for the airport and in the forthcoming UK Spaceport bid.
“
I have since learned the impact which the Chamber makes...
”
One of the Chamber’s greatest contributions is the increasing support and development of young people in partnership with businesses, education, skills development agencies and statutory organisations. We hope to be expanding our role in this arena working in partnership with both public and private sector to improve employment opportunities for young people in Ayrshire. Just watch this space! My journey has also been enjoyable, not least because of the range of interesting people I have met through the Chamber events and business networks, from businesses of all sizes and different

sectors. Whilst businesses compete with other, I also sense that they see the need to work together to make Ayrshire a stronger economy and putting it on the map. For example, in this the Year of Food and Drink in Scotland, our local producers and their offerings are certainly making their mark. And so after two magnificent Chamber Annual Dinners and the 2014 Business Week, I am going to enjoy myself at the next major event in October to celebrate local achievements in the Business Awards dinner at Seamill Hydro. And of course, not forgetting the Ladies Lunch in the same week at Trump Turnberry. Having initiated a Board Development session in my first year and a Strategy Development session in my second year, the board now systematically review its own performance and how best to deploy the expertise of its directors. We review and refresh the business plans in driving a more ambitious way ahead for the benefit of our members. In ending my term, I must give Val and the Chamber team not just a huge thank you and praise for their work for members, but also to congratulate them for achieving reaccreditation with British Chamber of Commerce after an intensive assessment process. Only seven Scottish Chambers hold this award. I also want to thank my fellow board members for supporting me and giving their own time as a volunteer to contribute to the success of the Chamber.

MINIMUM WAGE WARNING
YOUR BUSINESS | AUTUMN 2015
Businesses that fail to pay their employees a minimum wage of £7.20 by next April could face fines of up to £20,000, warns David Cameron. In Chancellor George Osborne’s summer budget, the Conservatives announced that the government would receive a ‘pay rise’, with the national minimum wage being increased from £6.50 to £7.20 to those aged over 25. The wage increase will kick in from April 2016, so Cameron has taken the opportunity to warn employers from breaking the rules.

VIBRANT FUTURE TO ENLIGHTEN
Enlighten Training is the new and vibrant name for Forget Me Not (Scotland). The change marks a really exciting period for Enlighten Training as they prepare to launch their innovative, empathy led and activity based training in dementia and mental health under their new branding from the 1st of October. Enlighten Training’s CEO, Catriona MacIntyre, explained the decision to re-brand the company was to reflect what is now offered.
She said: “The reason for rebranding was primarily due to the expansion of the range of training and participative workshops. Re-naming the company Enlighten Training encompasses not just our range of dementia courses but our additional services in mental health. “It took a long time to determine the ideal name and logo but we think we have nailed it. The word enlighten means to impart knowledge and education on a subject, to shed light on something and to free from ignorance and prejudice. We think this sums us up perfectly! “We have put a lot of time and effort into conveying our message through our logo and name. Purple is the universally accepted colour for the movement of dementia and Alzheimer’s and also a colour for healing so we really needed this in our logo. “We wanted to stand out with purpose and meaning and we think we now do.”

ON A PATH TO SOMETHING BETTER?
Business Excellence recognises those small and medium enterprises who strive for continuous improvement in their business. The annual award, which is presented to winners at Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Dinner, has two categories – Service and Manufacturing. This prestigious accolade rewards those Small and Medium enterprises based in Ayrshire who are committed to excellence and following a path of continuous improvement. And Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce will soon start the process for Business Excellence 2016 with a revised process to allow more organisations to participate. The application will stimulate self-assessment and set a pathway to take your business forward. The award is free to enter and open to any company with less than 250 employees in the manufacturing or service industry with the winners announced in Spring 2016. Nicola Sykes, Project Executive, Business Excellence Ayrshire, explained: “The Business Excellence Award is not only a prestigious award, but also a hugely beneficial process for your business. “The unique application process requires you to evaluate your own business and performance. Ayrshire has many top achieving organisations as is shown in the Ayrshire Business Awards. Perhaps it’s time for you to think about the next step to help you sustain your success? “You may not realise it, but there are many businesses doing things without considering what they are doing which may be considered as excellent in a formal setting.”

BAE SYSTEMS REGIONAL AIRCRAFT EIGHTY YEARS YOUNG AND STILL GOING STRONG
On 9 August 1935 - 80 years ago Scottish Aviation (SAL) was founded at Prestwick by Group Captain David McIntyre and Douglas-Douglas Hamilton who two years earlier had made international history by being the first men to fly over Mount Everest in specially converted biplanes.
Aerospace in 1977, the re-vamped Jetstream 31 was introduced to worldwide success, followed by the bigger Jetstream 41.
The new company was determined ‘to establish the aviation industry in all its branches in Scotland’ and it is a tribute to their vision and determination that the entities descended from Scottish Aviation are still active at Prestwick today - aviation companies BAE Systems Regional Aircraft and Spirit Aerosystems - while the airport and air traffic control centre also derive from that earlier time.
“
Initially flying training was undertaken and then, during the war, repairs and modifications were undertaken on a wide variety of both UK and American aircraft. Post war, SAL’s Scottish Airlines flew for some 15 years opening up routes for other airlines in Europe and the company’s first aircraft designs – the Pioneer and bigger Twin Pioneer – went into production. Through the 60s-70s SAL undertook aircraft aerostructures, maintenance, upgrades and modifications to both civil and military aircraft. Production of the Bulldog light trainer and Jetstreams for the RAF and Royal Navy followed. When SAL became part of British

Today, as part of BAE Systems, the Prestwick unit is a service and support business, focussing on continued airworthiness, design, engineering and customer support – including spares services, modifications, upgrades, technical publications, flight operations support and much more for an in-service fleet of some 550 aircraft, with more than 170 customers in 80 countries. The aircraft supported are the BAe 146/Avro RJ regional jets (80-112 seats), the Advanced Turboprop (64 seats and freighter variant), the Jetstream 31/32 and 41 (18-29 seats) and the earlier BAe 748 turboprop. Most activity is centred on the BAe 146/Avro RJ. As well as passenger and freight airline
customers Regional Aircraft has engineering responsibility for the BAe 146 Atmospheric Research Aircraft which it converted into one of the world’s foremost atmospheric research aircraft in the early 2000s. A lot of work is underway at the moment helping operators in North America to convert BAe 146/Avro RJs into aerial waterbombers to fight wildfires. The Prestwick team are also studying ways to extend the utility of the BAe 146/Avro RJ to ensure that this aircraft can continue in a variety of roles for many years yet. BAE Systems Regional Aircraft has also widened its scope and has European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Part 21G and J approvals which means that it can do design work and, through its extensive supply chain experience, manage production work on any aircraft type. Currently it is busy designing and producing upgrades for aircraft interiors and avionics on both Boeing and Airbus aircraft and also does specialist work on the new Mitsubishi Regional Jet from Japan.

Small businesses could increase their profits by accepting contactless payments, after the spending limit was recently raised from £20 to £30, allowing customers to quickly purchase items from small retailers. The UK Cards Association, the trade body for the card payments industry in the UK, estimates that the UK is quickly becoming a cashless society, with SMEs expecting to accept contactless payments. Graham Peacop, chief executive officer of the UK Cards Association has welcomed the limit increase. “With more contactless cards in wallets than ever before and a growing number of retailers accepting contactless payments, we have seen a huge rise in the number of payments being made. “The growth in contactless payments shows people want to use contactless cards and increasing the limit gives customers even more opportunities to pay in this way.”

Ayrshire Hospice improves the lives 4 BUSIN of people who have life-limiting ESS illnesses including cancer, heart failure and lung disease. It helps them to live as actively as they can to the end of their lives, however long that may be. Hospice care is free for patients and their carers, family members and friends but it isn’t free to provide. That means Ayrshire Hospice has to find £7.2 million each year to run all its services. So, when Ayr-based marketing agency, Launch, heard that the hospice needed some brand aid, they volunteered to help. David Wilkinson, Director at Launch, said: “Dignity is at the heart of everything the hospice does. And that’s why it is the name the charity has given its new interdisciplinary working group set up to look after people’s emotional, spiritual and social needs.
Our first job is to design an identity for the Dignity Group that acts as a simple and strong expression of its purpose and aligns it to the charity’s existing brand. We will then create a range of printed materials to communicate key care messages in a way which makes people feel in control, valued, confident, understood and respected. For over 25 years, the hospice has been doing fantastic work for the people of Ayrshire and Arran. We now intend to do the same for it.” Katie Ronald, Head of Communications at Ayrshire Hospice, said: “Attractive and understandable literature, meaningful dialogue and eye catching graphic design are crucial in supporting the hospice’s work. So, naturally we were delighted when Launch offered their free support to our team. Being able to tap into the skills, creativity and expertise on offer at Launch will, I’m sure, provide rocket fuel for our charity and have a real impact on our success.”

SWEDISH PET FOOD ARRIVES IN SCOTLAND New Ayrshire Chamber member Husse began their Scottish operations with the royal seal of approval. The Swedish pet food manufacturer has set up their latest franchise near Cumnock and to launch their move into Scotland with a dog show at Dumfries House. The Scottish franchise is run by Kevin and Andrea Simmonds who we sent an e-mail to their local estate to ask if they could put up a tent and try to sell food to the local dog walkers. Kevin explained: “From that one e-mail a reply came we never expected. We were invited to a meeting at Dumfries House about the possibility of hosting a dog show.
“It was incredible, Husse Scotland with no trading history, and no franchisees at the time in Scotland, went to a meeting armed only with enthusiasm and a few food samples. “We were asked to put on the first dog show at the estate at the request of HRH Prince Charles. The Prince was determined he wanted a fun dog show, we agreed

GOVERNMENT LIFTS RESTRICTIONS TO HELP SMES GAIN QUICKER PAYMENTS The Department for Business, Innovations and Skills (BIS) announced it will free businesses from restrictive clauses that ban the use of invoice finance, a popular source of income for small and microbusinesses. Government estimates reveal SMEs are owed £26bn in late payments, and they are spending on average £10.8bn a year in an attempt to recover overdue payments. BIS now plans to nullify these clauses by 2016, giving SMEs the right to receive finance through their invoices. Anna Soubry, the Government’s Small Business minister has welcomed the decision to lift anti-invoice restrictions on small firms. She said: “Small businesses are the economic backbone of Britain and by scrapping restrictions on invoice finance, thousands of firms across the country could benefit from faster access to hard-fought funds.” Invoice finance allows businesses to apply for finance using invoices for money owed to them - letting SMEs to gain their income faster, while avoiding the late payment fees.

A Prestwick graphic designer is offering businesses that operate from home a unique opportunity to work in a creative and collaborative environment. Tom McCrorie of Atom Create has revitalised office space on Prestwick’s Main Street and invited the local business community to join him in his new working home. With over 20 years’ experience as a graphic designer, Tom decided to set up on his own in 2007 and set up on his business from a shed in his garden. While this brought success, he believed it left him short changed. Tom felt there was a need to find his own premises to underline his professional outfit he had worked hard to build. He said: “Working from home was good but in order to grow the business, but I felt it needed its own space. “So earlier this year the opportunity came up to rent a very cost effective and awesome office space with enough room for eight desks and a breakout space for chilling and relaxing. Some clients like that fact that you have offices and they feel that they can show off to their peers that they use a design company with physical premises.” Having desk space to rent has proven to be very successful for Tom with all bar two of the desks already hired out for use. He added: “It has proven to be highly valuable and beneficial not just for myself but the others who work here. It has opened up networking partnership working opportunities.” Visit atomcreate.com for more details.

Three years on, Robert is now an established member of the workforce which has grown to fifteen.” Robert is involved in all aspects of the business. He is part of the team which has installed exhaust ventilation systems on major projects including the construction of the Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier at Rosyth.

Robert revealed his modern apprenticeship has served him well and gave him a sufficient grounding on which to build his own career. He said: “The multiple disciplines that I was exposed to throughout the apprenticeship ensured there was a constant need to study to ensure I reached each goal set. The training I received encouraged the development of new skills which in turn enabled me to tackle more complex problems. “The Modern Apprenticeship has increased my learning, practical skills and problem solving. My general confidence in investigating, diagnosing and proposing the resolution of problems has increased exponentially.”
The whole workforce celebrated Robert’s achievement with an informal lunch after which Robert was presented with a fishing rod and kit by Colin Russell, Managing Director and Tammy Russell, Company Secretary.

STEM AWARENESS EVENT AT ST JOSEPH’S
DESIGNER FLOCK Sew Ewe brought together schools and local textile companies in Ayrshire to create unique hand-stitched life-sized sheep sculptures. Over 170 pupils took part in the project which saw them develop their sewing, creative and design skills as well as their knowledge of the local textile industry.

The flock of textile sheep were showcased at Future Textiles - A Stitch in Time, a festival celebrating the British fashion and textile industry, at Dumfries House.

London-based Scottish designer, Louise Gray had the difficult job of judging the ‘best in flock’ and after much deliberation, three prize-winners were selected: Mount Carmel, Sanderson by Dalry & Curly S-ewe by Kingcase. Participating Schools: Dalry, Ballantrae, Colmonell, Blacklands, Dykesmains, Kingcase & Mount Carmel. Participating Companies: MYB Textiles, Balmoral Knitwear, Curtainwise, Begg & Co and Turnberry Rug Works The Scottish Textiles Skills Partnership congratulates all pupils, teachers and companies who took part. Louise was so impressed, as were all visitors to the Festival, with the amount of work, skill and creativity displayed in each sheep.
St Joseph’s Academy in Kilmarnock hosted a STEM Awareness Event for S3 pupils prior to their summer break. The event, organised by teachers David Ritson and Jonathon Szumlakowski in partnership with Ayrshire Chamber, aimed at raising the awareness in young people on the variety of careers open to Ayrshire’s young people. The event was attended by a number of local and national companies including: UTC Aerospace Systems, Mint Accountancy, GE Caledonian Ltd and EDF Energy with construction and sustainability also represented by Morrison Construction, Mitie and Hub South West. S3 pupils spent the day listening to employers and the feedback from them was very positive.
BURGER KINGS! Home Economic pupils from Greenwood Academy beat off over 120 schools from Scotland to be crowned Burger Champions with their unique clapshot burger. The tasteScotland Burger competition involved pupils preparing a recipe which would bring a new burger to the marketplace. Quality Meat Scotland promoted the event and the judges were impressed by the traditional Scottish dimension of their clapshot burger, which was a mixture
of potatoes and turnips as well as pork and the usual seasoning. Miss Smith of the Home Economics Department said: “The pupils are extremely proud of their achievements and have been delighted that the sample tasting events with fellow pupils have been very well received. “We really appreciated the support of Alex who works for Pollok Williamson Butchers, Ayr. For pupils to know that their product is on sale in other schools and available to customers over the counter has been inspirational.”

It is important to show that students on work experience placements do reap the benefits and can use that time to help gain employment. Peter Gillson of Arran is one such example and now works as a Port Assistant at Brodick harbour. During third year at Arran High School attended work experience at CalMac in Brodick, and learned much about how the Port operated, ticketing, reservations, car marshalling and mooring operations. As I was finishing my higher grades this year, around March, I saw that CalMac were advertising for a Seasonal Port Assistant at Brodick so I applied for the job and was lucky to get an interview.

During work experience I had been leading warm ups for classes including movement and stretches. I helped Katherine and Lorna the PE Teachers to collect and organise equipment and also join in with activities if anyone needs a partner. I felt I was proactive by asking if there is anything I can do. I have been encouraging younger ones to join in and try the best they can. It was a very enjoyable placement.

Throughout these different duties and programmes I managed to gain massive confidence with speaking to new people and gained more experience with working in a team. Overall, I fairly enjoyed my work experience course and would highly recommend it.

NEWS
SCOTTISH RATE OF INCOME TAX The Scottish Rate of Income Tax (SRIT) is the amount of income tax Scottish taxpayers will have to pay and will come in to force from 6 April 2016.
Scottish Taxpayer Status
A Scottish taxpayer is someone who is resident in the United Kingdom (UK) for tax purposes and who has their sole or main place of residence in Scotland for more of the tax year than in another part of the UK. The location of an employer, trustee etc. is not of any relevance, it is the location of the individual’s main place of residence that is the key factor in deciding Scottish taxpayer status. HMRC will identify those individuals who will be Scottish taxpayers – you, as an employer, will not have to make any assessments on taxpayer status. For the majority of individuals, identifying their main place of residence will be very simple. For those with more complex living arrangements, guidance will be published on GOV.UK later this year. Although there is currently no legislation in place that states customers need to keep HMRC informed of a change in address, it would in their
best interest to tell us about any changes in personal circumstances, including changes in address, as soon as possible, as this could potentially amend their taxpayer status and tax code. HMRC will be letting individuals know about the importance of notifying them if they change their address.
Tax codes
Scottish taxpayers will have their tax codes prefixed with the letter ‘S’. You should not use a tax code prefixed with the letter ‘S’ unless advised to do so by HMRC. For new starters, the Scottish Rate solution will look to assess and assign the appropriate Tax Code after the first Full Payment Submission (FPS) is received, using the information we hold at that time. We will then let you know the correct tax code to use. You should continue to operate the tax code provided by HMRC, even if there is a change to your employees’ circumstances. In-year notifications will be issued where the customer notifies us of their change of address and this changes their taxpayer status and tax code.

Transparency of Scottish Rate: P60s and payslips
28
We previously told you that P60’s would need to separately show the Scottish Rate of Income Tax proportion on ‘In This Employment’ section of the P60. However, we are pleased to tell you that there is no longer a requirement to include the Scottish rate separately on the P60. Over the last few months HMRC and the Scottish Government have consulted with employers and Software Developers on how best to implement these changes. We have listened to the concerns and issues raised about the complexity of making this change especially given the potential for further changes to accommodate the extended income tax powers contained within the current Scotland Bill. Therefore, the decision was taken by the Scottish Government to no longer mandate the inclusion of SRIT separately on the P60 from April 2016. However, the P60 should show a Scottish Tax Code, where appropriate. HMRC will show Scottish Rate portion separately on the individual’s Annual Tax Summary for the tax year beginning 6 April 2016 onwards. While there is no HMRC requirement to include the Scottish Rate amount separately on payslips, we will continue to work with employers on how best to ensure employees have visibility and understanding of the Scottish Rate of Income Tax.
PROMOTE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN YOUR WORKPLACE
LET’S WORK TOGETHER New Chamber member AllNeeds Recruitment Company Ltd can’t wait to work with our full membership. Formed in 1999, the group is now run by Debbie Hunter, one of the business’ founders. She explained: “It’s hard to believe that we have been helping companies with staffing requirements for over 16 years now. The large majority of our customers are based in Ayrshire and some have been clients since we began.” Debbie herself has recently been accepted as a Fellow of the Institute of Recruitment
Professionals. This is their highest accreditation and is testament to her experience and skills gained over the years. She added: “We are looking forward to working with fellow members of the Chamber of Commerce as well as gaining knowledge from the various events the Chamber offers throughout the year.”
Physical activity guidelines recommend that adults should aim to be active daily, over the week this should add up to at least two and half hours of moderate intensity activity and minimise extended periods of sitting. In 2011, the Scottish Health Survey indicated that only 39% of adults met guideline recommendations and there has been no significant change in this figure. Physical activity can help prevent disease, maintain a healthy weight and assist mental wellbeing. The Physical Activity Taskforce in 2003 reported that people who are physically active take fewer days sick leave than their inactive counterparts meaning getting our workforce moving is clearly beneficial. In the workplace there are lots of things that you can do to promote physical activity including encouraging activity during the working day for example; supporting active travel to work. An ageing population makes the need for a healthy sustainable workforce even more important, reducing the costs of ill health and long term conditions on both the company and society as a whole. To be entered into our free prize draw to win a pack of physical activity resources for your workplace and to receive more information on the benefits of physical activity in the ESS workplace please contact the NHS Ayrshire N I S U B 4 and Arran Workplace Team on 01292 885 855 or AA-UHB.HWL@nhs.net
