In recent years however Dennistoun has undergone a complete regeneration and renaissance under what is known as the Glasgow Eastern Area Redevelopment (GEAR). Given that the Chamber is now celebrating its Platinum year with all of its historical achievements and developments, it is similarly time for the Chamber to undertake its own strategic review and over the next year you will see perhaps both a change in direction and certainly gear.

Ayrshire has seen many changes throughout the last seventy years but can be proud of the way it adapted and responded to many societal, governmental and economic changes and challenges. Today we face many serious issues which impact upon the business community whether Brexit, business rates and the continuing debate over whether there will be another referendum. Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce is committed to being your voice and to be loud and to be heard. In turn we need to hear from you so may I urge
you to respond to surveys whether from ourselves or Scottish Chambers to allow us to put forward the strongest argument in your favour when we lobby those in power and who are influencers and decision makers for change. Some of the innovations which we plan over the next months will see your Chamber more engaged with its membership and more open and transparent about what it is doing and how it operates. We are already providing every member with a summary or decision following each Board meeting and shall now conduct the bi-monthly Board meeting at different venues alternatively in one of the three Local Authority districts which comprise Ayrshire. We are also conducting a root and branch review of the services which we provide to members in our quest to be the go to organisation as representatives of business and to increase and improve the offering which we have for members. In this special year we are also seeking to target sustainable growth in membership and you will see many opportunities to be involved at different events and our programme this year will have something for everyone. In terms of governance, we will later in the year be looking to appoint new directors and we would hope to have the appointments formalised by the AGM in September. Given that this is of course the Platinum Anniversary and many of you will have enjoyed a spectacular Platinum Dinner at Trump Turnberry in March we have introduced a “Platinum Committee” under the chairmanship of Vice-President, Lorna Gibson, and that Committee has the specific remit to provide a unique programme of events under the Platinum label and you are encouraged to watch both this magazine and our website for further details of events. May I wish everyone a successful and prosperous year and invite closer links with the Chamber.

Speaking about the First Minister’s statement regarding Scotland’s future relationship with the UK and Europe, Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, said: “Scotland has been through two referendums and two major elections over the past three years, and there is no doubt that this period of continual uncertainty has had a material impact upon businesses in Scotland. These are real and present business issues that are affecting business decisions and investment.

“The Scottish Chambers of Commerce network will continue our process of engagement with businesses across Scotland to understand how this prospect could affect them and how their voices can be most effectively articulated during this process. “In the current circumstances, businesses need as much certainty, stability and confidence as possible and it is the role of our Governments to provide it. The message from Scottish Chambers of Commerce members has been clear and consistent – our priority must be to create the conditions that will enable businesses to thrive. “It is welcome that the First Minister has indicated that the Scottish Government will continue to engage with the political process around the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. These are vital years ahead for the future of the UK and Scottish economy and it is crucial that Scotland has a voice at the centre of this process.”

The two organisations impressed the judging panel with their commitment to strive for excellence in their respective fields. Both winners were revealed by Scottish Actress Karen Dunbar who hosted the event. BREXIT BRINGS NEW OPPORTUNITY TO TARGET TALENT FOR BUSINESS
The UK’s withdrawal from the European Union will result in major changes in terms of how businesses are able to access the talent they need to succeed but Scottish Chambers of Commerce network believe that there is an opportunity to design a new migration system, driven by economic need and responsive to the long term plans of businesses. Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, believes that businesses in the area should view leaving the European Union as an opportunity despite the uncertainty. She said: “At the moment, there are few certainties about what Brexit will mean for business but what we do know is that it will undoubtedly bring to an end the free movement of people between the UK and Europe that we have become so accustomed to. Migration was a major factor in the outcome of last year’s EU referendum and it seems that the UK is destined for a future where access to the UK to live and work will be regulated much more than it is today, particularly for European citizens. “However, in our view businesses should look upon this as an opportunity. The uncertainty and flux around Brexit gives us a unique opportunity to determine what the UK’s future migration priorities should look like. We believe that economic and business need must be the fundamental driver of future inward migration policy for the UK, enabling businesses to plan for the future, safe in the knowledge that
RATES CAP A GOOD START BUT ANOMALIES MUST BE ADDRESSED Commenting on the Scottish Government’s deal on business rates for the north east and the hospitality sector,
government is backing them by targeting the skills that business needs to thrive and grow. “This policy should fully complement the efforts of the Scottish and UK Governments to ensure a steady supply of domestic talent from our schools, colleges and universities but should recognise that for many sectors, and across the full spectrum of skills levels, making full use of domestic talent can only ever be part of the solution. “The UK’s future use of the migration pipeline to channel talent into businesses where it is most needed would by definition be flexible, and able to address sectoral and geographical need, such as in Scotland’s digital and IT sector, where it is estimated that 11,000 new roles per year will need to be filled. It should also be able to respond to demographics. For example, Scotland’s projected population growth to 2024 is only 3.1%, compared to a projection of a 7.5% increase for England over the same period. Such a deficit, if unaddressed by migration, could have implications for Scotland’s ability to grow our economy and fund our public services. “It is time to make the case for a new migration system that works for the UK, works for Scotland and, above all, works for business. Free movement of people across Europe may have led us to become complacent about the effort that is required to target the talents that our businesses need across all sectors and all parts of the UK. We need to plan now for a system that will be focused on sourcing the right talent, wherever in the world that exists, and in the numbers that meet the demands of our economy.”
Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, said: “We welcome the Scottish Government’s recognition that this year’s business rates revaluation is causing major problems for a large number of Scottish businesses. This announcement of additional support measures for certain sectors and parts of the country are to be welcomed and will deliver much needed support when it is most needed. “What it doesn’t do, however, is get to the root of the problem. That is why Scottish Chambers of Commerce has proposed a full expert review of the methodology of valuations
in the hospitality, motor trade and energy sectors, with a view to ensuring that every business in Scotland can be confident that it is subject to a correct business rates valuation of its premises. This would complement the ongoing work of the Barclay Review of Business Rates, which is a more general and less technical appraisal of the system. “The Scottish Government’s additional measures, together with such an expert review and the Barclay Review of business rates can combine to enable long-overdue change to the structure of Scotland’s outdated business rates regime. VICE PRESIDENT APPOINTED AT AYRSHIRE CHAMBER Lorna Gibson of QTS Training has been named Vice President of Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce. She takes the place of Graeme McKinstry, who took on the role of President last October. The decision to name Lorna was made the board of directors at their most recent board meeting.

Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce has recently been awarded by The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme for its recognition to being armed forces-friendly.

The scheme recognises the commitment and support from UK employers who support those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families and Ayrshire Chamber was presented with its Bronze Award last month. Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive, Val Russell, explained: “We are delighted to be able to support this initiative that recognises our support for the nation’s armed forces.
“As an organisation, we support opportunities for all and this award is a demonstration of this commitment and would actively encourage our membership and other businesses in Ayrshire to do the same.” The ERS is designed primarily to recognise private sector support although public sector organisations such as the emergency services, local authorities, NHS trusts and executive agencies are also eligible to be recognised. Bronze award holders promote being armed forces-friendly and are open to employing reservists, armed forces veterans (including the wounded, injured and sick), cadet instructors and military spouses/partners.
Speaking on her appointment, Lorna said: “I am honoured to have been invited to expand my current role on the Board to that of Vice-President of the Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry. “This is a great opportunity to further support and develop the fantastic work of the Chamber and I look forward to assisting our President, Graeme McKinstry, the Directors and the ACCI team in achieving our goals over the forthcoming period.” Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce President Graeme McKinstry, added: “We were delighted that Lorna accepted the board’s nomination to become vice-President. RDK REFLECT ON THEIR 25 YEARS Saltcoats based RDK Construction Ltd are celebrate 25 years of trading in North Ayrshire. Owned and run by brothers Billy and Robert Kirkwood they have through both private development and contracts seen sales in excess of 70 million over that period. Both brothers are joiners to trade and it is with that skill they focus their design and attention to detail on all of their projects. Billy, who is also a Director of the Scottish Building Federation, said: “We are very fortunate to still have key employees who have spent the last 25 years working with Robert and I. “We directly employ most of our operatives and have an extensive list of other local trade companies that also work with us. “The last ten years has been the most difficult with the demise of the clearing banks, whom we have historically relied on as a partner for our private sector developments. Looking forward we have a very healthy pipe line order book some £20,000,000, this will see the company grow and increase output
over the next three to five years, especially in the Affordable Housing Market as well as some new private residential and commercial developments.” Both brothers are also progressing a new off-site manufacturing facility for both modular, panelised and components for the Construction Industry. System Five Off-Site is a new concept in zero energy production and will create up to 25 new jobs in the making. Given that both brothers have been building timber framed structures for 70 years between them, they may just have a head start. The new mixed use Development for CHA Ltd in Largs is due to start with demolition at the end of March.

After more than thirty years on Troon’s Church Street, the Ayrshire-based group is moving to a prominent location on Portland Street which will more than double the practice’s capacity for both eye examinations and dispensing. IT’S ALL ABOUT ‘THE IVORY WAY’ Running his own business for 16 years, involved in the photocopier industry for longer than he can care to remember, Ian Ivory believes now is a good a time as any to shout about his business. Ivory Solutions has grown from a small office rented from a friend through the difficult recession to a flourishing business based in Kilmarnock’s Glencairn Industrial Estate providing printers, photocopiers and multi functioning devices to companies in Ayrshire and throughout the UK. ADAPT TO FACE THE CHALLENGES AHEAD… IT’S THE AYRSHIRE WAY
For any organisation, 70 years in business is an extremely notable milestone, but for a small business that has grown and flourished over a period which has witnessed its fair share of social and economic change, is quite remarkable. From its separate beginnings as Kilmarnock and Ayr individually to its merger to the Chamber we all know, the organisation has adapted to meet the demands of that period to help grow the local economy. Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry has striven to offer the very best business services in return for the membership subscription from over 800 local companies. Lobbying at Holyrood and Westminster, export documentation, links to education, access to HR and healthcare, golf days, racecourse outings, network nights . . . all staged in the professional and friendly manner that is the very essence of those days way back in the 1940’s. From those early post war days that were the very birth of local chambers, the emphasis was on hard work. Down the deep Ayrshire mines - which there were many, - on the seas, on the farmland and in the manufacturing
factories. At one time Ayrshire was home to Barony, Hunterston, MasseyFerguson, Saxone, ICI, Monsanto, British Aerospace, Glengarnock, Volvo, Glenfield and Kennedy, Stoddard, Digital, Johnnie Walker, Beechams, W J Barr, Roche. These are the iconic names of the second half of the 20th Century that were Ayrshire’s backbone. Some of these giants remain, and were joined in the 21st century by new names such as GE Caledonian, Caledonian Paper, Food Partners, Goodrich, Egger and Visimetrics. But the days when Ayrshire had factories employing many thousands are, unfortunately, over. However, this area knows how to meet a challenge and testament to what we have here in Ayrshire they have adapted to meet that change and we now have an abundance of thriving modern small and medium enterprises showcasing the deep talent pool we have. So, it was back on February 21, 1947 that the first annual dinner of Kilmarnock & District Chamber of Industries was staged at Lauder’s Restaurant, T Muir Wilson, presiding. Those attending were keen for their new association to bring common good. These were hard times and companies were not making
money… but not for today’s reasons. There was no training, hardly any available workers and a lack of housing. Meanwhile a year and a half later - October 19, 1948 - Ayr Chamber of Commerce staged the inaugural meeting, John W Robertson as founding President. These were not men from the “dirty trades” but lawyers, retailers, bankers and accountants. In the fifties air and rail transport were big issues. Sound familiar? There was anger the 1.52pm Ayr to Glasgow train had been axed and demands the dining cars were reintroduced. There was worry that the opening of Manchester’s Ringway Airport would be bleak for Prestwick Airport as we approached the Sixties and time would tell how that would pan out. It’s clear from the records of the first meeting that the Chamber has been about pushing Ayrshire forward, facing up to the challenges of the time and led the way to make sure the local economy thrived no matter what. Part two of our lookback at the Ayrshire Chamber Commerce story takes in the swinging Sixties and the economically challenging 1970s when all was not well.

CHAMBER ES 70 YEARS Ayrshire’s own Karen Dunbar hosted the evening and her unique style ensured guests were kept entertained throughout. Helping Karen with the entertainment was a special video by the Ayrshire Chamber team. ‘Mime Through Time’ involved the Chamber staff and some directors miming along to some of the most recognisable songs of the last 70 years. Chief Executive Val Russell said: “What a fitting way to start a year of Platinum Anniversary celebrations with a fantastic evening in equally stunning surroundings.

Glasgow Prestwick Airport completed its Executive Team in May 2016. The new team has been working over the past year to develop a new Vision and Strategic Plan for the airport. This new plan will run from financial year 2017 to 2022 and it will be reviewed annually to assess performance against objectives and to take in to consideration any changes in the operating environment for the airport. This plan will build upon the work that has already commenced under Scottish Government ownership and the direction of Andrew Miller, the airport’s Chair, who joined in November 2014 and the Board of Non-Executive Directors, appointed in June 2015. This work includes the formation of the new Executive Team, a new sales team, the roll out of a new brand, and preparation work to become the UK and Europe’s first
spaceport. Chief Executive Officer, Ron Smith, said: “This new Strategic Plan gives a clear focus and direction for our future. We have carefully assessed our current operations, our strengths and the opportunities available to us and I firmly believe that this is a realistic and achievable plan that will enable us to progress towards long term profitability and sustainability. “The airport is a great asset for Ayrshire and we are committed to making the maximum contribution that we can to the local community and economy through creating connections and supporting commerce. We do not work in isolation, and the ongoing support of our partners, stakeholders and the local community will be fundamental to our future success and we’re looking forward to sharing this plan with you in more detail.”
A huge part of the strategic plan is Glasgow Prestwick Airport’s bid to be the UK and Europe’s first Spaceport.
At the core of the plan are six main objectives. These are: Bringing in business The airport plans to grow all of their revenue streams to deliver a sustainable business which is resilient to market changes. This includes the licence to become the first spaceport in the UK and Europe. Continually compliant and staying safe, secure and sustainable The aim is to deliver sustainable, safe, and top quality services to all of their customers, whilst continually looking for ways in which they can improve their efficiency, effectiveness and customer experience. Making people a priority Having the right people, with the right skills, in the right roles, at the right time is an important part of the strategic plan, as Glasgow Prestwick Airport believes this will
give their business a competitive advantage. Financially fit Ensuring that financial services are fit to support the business to develop, grow, and always offer their customers best value and ensure that the business makes every penny count. Building networks and relationships The airport intends to work with their partners and stakeholders to further their business objectives and to play a positive role in the communities they are a part of. Attracting investment As the eventual goal of Glasgow Prestwick is to be privately owned, they plan to seek external investment to accelerate the pace at which they return the business to a sustainable and profitable future. The strategic plan will be published in the coming month.
With the announcement last month of the dedicated spaceflight bill, the UK government is committed to having commercial flights within 3 years – a goal which Glasgow Prestwick Airport is ready for. Richard Jenner, Spaceport Director for Glasgow Prestwick Airport, said: “Glasgow Prestwick Airport has a long history of being in the forefront of aviation and aerospace and we’re really excited for this new opportunity to diversify and develop our business. “We are confident we can help the government to meet its commitment to have space launch in the UK by 2020.” But this isn’t spaceflight as we have come to know it – not at first. Richard explained: “For the first few years it won’t be that different from ordinary aircraft taking off. “To start with it will be a rocket hung under a specially adapted plane.” The plane will take the rocket to 40,000ft where it will then detach and make its way into space. These horizontal flights will be used for launching satellites but the airport hopes that, as technology improves, these will develop to include passenger flights and aims to be a home
of budget friendly space tourism. The airport currently features a strong presence of international aerospace companies, including UTC, GE Caledonian, BAE Systems, Spirit, and Woodward Inc. And long term, Glasgow Prestwick aims to build on its already excellent relationship with companies in this field, by attracting predominantly aerospace, space and ancillary service orientated organisations to the airport as part of a strengthened aerospace cluster. Richard said: “We are already working closely with partners in space related sectors and have Memorandums of Understanding in place with other spaceports, space vehicle manufacturers, launch service providers and potential customers. These include Houston and Midland Spaceports in the USA and we are continuing to develop new agreements with other parties.” He added: “Glasgow Prestwick Airport fulfils many of the essential criteria for a spaceport such as infrastructure, favourable weather conditions and relatively clear airspace. And, as such, we believe that our airport is able to move at pace with the legislative process and we are equipped to become the UK and Europe’s first space launch site with minimal investment.”

NAILED IT – INNOVATIVE ADULT LEARNING AT NEWTON PRIMARY A ground breaking nail care training centre has just been launched at Newton Primary School in Ayr. In a first for Ayrshire, the enterprise has been set up to help promote learning but for parents rather than pupils. South Ayrshire Council has been working with the Prince's Trust and Developing Young Workforce (DYW) to bring about the landmark project which promotes employability skills to parents aged 19-24 with children at the school.

The cheques with the funding from the Prince’s Trust and DYW were presented to the school by Claire Baird, DYW Project Executive and Walter Smith, Prince’s Trust Ayrshire Chair Claire added: “We are absolutely delighted to support such an innovative project and are very impressed by the speed of implementation and early involvement of the young people.” The school in partnership with the Prince’s Trust and DYW is also looking to introduce other ventures for parents such as a bike maintenance centre.
Fiona McAvoy, Newton Primary Head Teacher said: “This innovative project will not only provide significant development opportunities to the young mothers participating but also provide a community focus, as well as enabling our parents to more fully support their children by building greater

INFLUENCERS INSIGHTS Over the past few monthsemployers across Ayrshire have hosted a series of ‘Influencers Insights’. These sessions are aimed at giving teachers, careers advisors and college lecturers the opportunity to hear direct from industry about the opportunities available to young people. Sessions held to date include: The Galleon Centre (Insight into Sports & Leisure), IBIOC (Insight into biotechnology), Accountants In Bankruptcy (Insight into the Finance/Business Sector), Woodward Engineering (Insight in Engineering) & Boots (Insight into Retail). These events have covered: job roles,

#AYE 2017 February saw the launch of #AYE 2017 for schools across the 3 Local Authorities. #AYE – Ayrshire's Young Entrepreneurs, is a monthly club for S1-S3 pupils who might be interested in setting up in business when they leave school. Pupils are also offered the opportunity to apply to DYW Ayrshire for a start-up grant to set up a sustainable business within the school. 180 pupils attended their first sessions run by DYW Ayrshire and Princes Trust Scotland covering team building and an introduction to enterprise. The Princes Trust also brought along local young entrepreneurs to talk to the pupils about

Females from North Ayrshire Secondary Schools were invited to participate in a full day of STEM activities at the Greenwood Conference Centre. The annual event organised in partnership with North Ayrshire Council was again a huge success and got pupils to really think about STEM opportunities. Interactive hands-on workshops were delivered by GSK, KCP Environmental and IT Company, Soprasteria. Pupils also got to network with a variety of representatives from EDF, Ashleigh (Scotland), Spirit AeroSystems, Woodward Aircraft Engine Systems, Strathclyde University and Ayrshire College.

Loudoun Academy held their first ever Modern Apprenticeship Careers Fair at the end of 2016. The school were keen to hold an event which solely focussed on Modern Apprenticeships to raise awareness of the opportunities which exist within the local area. All S3 and S4 pupils were invited to attend and they participated in a speed networking session with 8 local companies including EDF, Egger, GTG Training, VG Energy, UTC Aerospace Systems, The British Army, The Royal Air Force and East Ayrshire Council. Ayrshire College were also present and introduced pupils to Foundation Apprenticeships. Paul Vickers of Loudoun Academy said: “At Loudoun Academy we want to encourage pupils to view Apprenticeships as a positive career move. This was a great opportunity for pupils to hear from employees who have been through the Modern Apprenticeship route.”

Scotland's National Centre for Languages (SCILT) ran a Mandarin workshop and spoke about the importance of understanding Chinese culture when doing business with this Country. Kara Nisbet of Articulate Language Camps got the young people in her workshop thinking about marketing in the form of Spanish hashtags for Instagram posts. The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland brought along a variety of Spanish and Japanese board games and explained how with their links over the world, languages are incredibly important. Lastly pupils had the opportunity to visit the marketplace and speak with representatives from SCILT, Glasgow Clyde College, Trump Turnberry, Dell and Stòrlann.

BELMONT ACADEMY’S BUMPER CAREERS DAY Ayrshire College’s Ayr Campus was the venue for this year’s Careers Day at Belmont Academy. 240 pupils attended presentations in both the Dam Park and riverside buildings. The mix of employers covered a multitude of sectors, including Savills Estate Agents, Police Scotland, and Egger.
The day was structured around six main themes: Create, Discover, Produce, Support, Care, and Protect. Katrina McEwan represented Egger in the Produce theme, with South Ayrshire Women’s Aid in Protect, and Savills Estate Agents in Produce.
WENDY SHOWS HOLMSTON PRIMARY HOW TO BE A LEADER IN ENGINEERING! Wendy Pring from KCP stepped up when Holmston Primary were looking for an engineer to interview for their Scottish Engineering Special Leaders Award.
The SESLA programme seeks to encourage the engineering instincts of Primary pupils, by getting them to answer the question: If you were an engineer, what would you do? As part of this process, the pupils interview an engineer to understand what their role is and what path they took to get there. Wendy, as a civil engineer, was more than happy to go into Holmston Primary and talk to the pupils about her career. After the presentation from Wendy, Ruth Shanta, the Class Teacher from Holmston, said “thanks so very much for your visit today. You are truly fantastic at talking with young people and providing inspiration across a broad spectrum of what might 'connect' with them.” Who knows, Wendy may just have inspired the next generation of engineers in South Ayrshire.
Services including Fit for Work Scotland, Access to Work and Working Health Services are examples aimed at maintaining a working environment which supports current staff to remain in the work place. The aim of Disability Confident is to halve the current employment rate gap by 2020. The ‘two tick’ disability scheme has been replaced with a 3 level Disability Confident Scheme, to help employers make the most of the opportunities provided by employing disabled people. The busy DYW Ayrshire team took advantage of Pancake Day to visit Kilmarnock’s award winning Browning the Bakers to find out about the opportunities they provide young people, as well as a taste of their delicious pancakes!

Now in its third generation, Brownings the Bakers was established in 1945 by current Managing Director John Gall’s Grandparents. Over the years the company has grown and expanded winning numerous awards along the way from Best Pie in British Football for their famous Kilmarnock Pie to their most recent award of World Champion Scotch Pie 2017! We visited the company’s bakery in Kilmarnock to hear about what career opportunities there are within this industry and why John feels it is so important for organisations to invest time and money in recruiting young people.

With a large proportion of John’s 200 employees falling into the 16-24 age category, Brownings the Bakers are dedicated to offering career opportunities to local youngsters. During our visit John informed us that the majority of his staff come into the business once they leave school and follow a four year apprenticeship programme to become a qualified Baker. John explained: “We do recruit a lot of young people into the business. This is normally their first job after leaving school and most of them come through the apprenticeship programme. “The apprenticeship is a four year programme
AYRSHIRE MODERN APPRENTICESHIP COMMUNITY CHALLENGE 2017 Now in its 14th year, the Ayrshire Modern Apprenticeship Community Challenge 2017, was launched during Modern Apprenticeship Week in early March. The Challenge asks local companies to put

with the end result making them a qualified baker. During their apprenticeship they work within the confectionery area, the bread area, the scone area and also within the pie factory to help them learn all the skills needed to work within the business.” Producing a whopping 15,000 pancakes per day John explained these pancakes are sold not only within the Brownings shops but are also sold throughout Aldi, Tesco, Waitrose and Dobbies stores across Scotland. With Aldi’s 72 Scottish stores receiving a Brownings the Bakers delivery every morning the demand for John’s products is huge. In order to meet this demand the bakery produces on average 55,000 scones, 65,000 pies, including that of their award winning Kilmarnock Pie, and an enormous 700,000 rolls a week! The pivotal role young people play in the business isn’t lost by John who regularly encourages other organisations to recruit young people in order to reap these benefits and work towards a stronger more diverse workforce. He added: “I would definitely recommend for other businesses to start recruiting young people. Property owners could be putting themselves at risk by not insuring their properties to the full reinstatement value, leading to settlement issues when it comes to claims payments. 1. VAT – the question of VAT arises on the settlement of a claim, and who can recover the VAT element in the process. With VAT now standing at 20% it is vital that the sum insured is adequate in this aspect. The sum insured should therefore include the VAT unless there is a means of recovery should a claim occur. This has become more pronounced recently with many business owners moving their property from their company into a pension fund, at which point the VAT should be included in the reinstatement sum insured. Ask yourself who owns the building; can they recover VAT; is the building listed? 2. Definition of building – each insurer will have a slight variation, but this could be the building including foundations; landlords
fixture and fittings; satellite dishes; fixed glass; tenants improvements formerly the property of a tenant but relinquished at the surrender of a lease; furnishing and common parts; management and security system; walls, gates and fences; services; fuel tanks and pipe works; car parks, pavements and surfaced areas; landscaping including trees; and street furniture. The list is extensive, and it is vital that the sum insured takes account of these, as well as the cost of infrastructure such as IT systems. Many of the items above can make up 30% of a sum insured. 3. Lease agreements – the lease is key to setting out what should be insured and by whom. Is it the landlord or tenants responsibility? The lease may state that the obligation is for the landlord to insure the premises other than tenants fixture and fittings, however the property owner has to accept responsibility for insuring the tenants improvements to the buildings. The larger
the property and the more sophisticated the improvements would therefore present itself as underinsurance. Discuss your warranties and conditions, your VAT position, and who is responsible for the building with your insurance broker, so that you have the correct valuation should you need to make a claim. We are able to move quickly to provide support wherever it is needed and it’s that creativity and responsiveness which sets us apart.” NEWLY FLEDGED CAREER OPTIONS 27 year old Ross Mackay, from Kilwinning in Ayrshire, jokes that he had begun to think he was a Jonah for any business sector he worked in. Having completed an apprenticeship as an electrician within the building industry, he was just on the cusp of making decent money as the property market crashed. Luckily the oil and gas industry was booming, so Ross decided to go offshore, working as a roustabout and deck crew on the rigs. Then the oil price collapsed and Ross found himself high and dry again. “I had access to training funding through CEIS and the experience I’d gained elsewhere seemed to make sense for working with on and offshore wind turbines. “The instructors at the Prontoport Training Academy were very welcoming right from the start and very “real” in the way they put across the needs of the industry and the skills required”. At time of writing, Ross is involved in familiarisation training with a major player in the industry and will be starting as a full-time Wind Technician in March.
The tinsel may be long gone but growing Christmas trees is a business and goes on all through the year.
Christmas tree grower, Garrocher Tree Farm, had its most successful year ever in 2016, selling local produce direct from the livestock Marts in Ayr and Newton Stewart. MD Mike Craig, is President of the UK Christmas Tree Growers Association and said he is delighted with this can bring to the local economy. “We are able to train and employ people all year round for those few manic weeks of selling in November and December each year. During a quiet period for the Auction Marts, Christmas trees ensure business stays brisk and we exceeded our targets early this year. ” And it wasn’t just the Marts which benefited from Garrocher Christmas trees. Ailsa Wood Products in Old Dailly, South Ayrshire was given a lasting Christmas present too. They make handcrafted tubs, primarily for the spring and summer garden market, but saw them selling like hotcakes in December, repurposed as rustic bases for a real tree. Matt Wilson, General Manager of Ailsa Wood Products said, “We were able to craft hundreds more tubs and keep our employees gainfully employed at what would otherwise have been a quiet
time. More consumers are becoming interested in a quality British made product rather than imports and we’ve been delighted with the interest we’ve received.” And if that’s not enough good news for local business, how about throwing a few ice cubes into a glass of pine scented gin? The Crafty Distillery in Galloway asked Garrocher for some fresh foliage as a possible ingredient for a new gin, at time of writing still under development. The Distillery prides itself on bringing fine spirits from grain to glass and word has it that they are working on a new gin – with notes of pine. HUNTERSTON OFFSHORE WIND TURBINE TEST FACILITY IS THE ONLY ONSHORE TEST FACILITY FOR OFFSHORE TURBINES IN THE UK Situated on the North Ayrshire coast, the site offers a great wind resource and allows easy and permanent access to the turbines which is critical when testing prototype technology, allowing offshore conditions to be tested onshore in a safer and less expensive way. The site is home to the 7MW Mitsubishi Sea Angel and Siemens 6MW offshore wind turbines and has been instrumental in securing Scotland’s place as an international leader in offshore wind energy research and development. During the existing testing period the facility has allowed Siemens to use the 6MW test machine to refine their 7MW turbine which will be deployed at
the Beatrice offshore wind farm in the Outer Moray Firth as well as other UK offshore wind farms. This deployment underpinned Siemens’s investment in a UK manufacturing plant providing up to 1,000 skilled jobs. Mitsubishi testing has included the Artemis hydraulic system which has secured employment in Scotland and provided excellent data for future offshore turbine designs and projects. Hunterston has injected £32.4m into the Scottish economy with £4.1m of this in North Ayrshire. The communities closest to the wind farm have also benefitted from the Hunterston Community Fund which is providing £250,000 over the current five years of
the project. Since the fund began in 2013, £183,180 has been invested in grant payments across 68 local projects. In January, SSE submitted a Section 42 Application to North Ayrshire Council to extend the current planning consent for the Test Facility by a further two years. If consented, this would extend the life of the site until October 2019, enabling a full five year operating window and the chance to further refine the important data and findings from the Test Facility. AYRSHIRE COLLEGE PLUMBING AND GAS CLASSES Ayrshire College has run domestic and commercial gas engineer training and accreditation for a number of years. Industry regulation dictates that gas engineers require upto-date accreditation that must be refreshed on a 5-year cycle. The college offers this service optimised for industry requirements by delivering the courses flexibly in the evening and at weekends to ensure companies remain productive. This approach has led to strong connections with the industry, resulting in recurring business over a sustained period. Recently, the college has delivered this training in packages specifically designed to meet the needs of two of the UK’s blue-chip companies, SSE and SGN. SSE is involved in the generation, distribution and supply of energy across the UK, while SGN is responsible for the network that distributes gas to 5.9 million homes across Scotland and parts of England. The college delivers a bespoke course for SGN over a 5-day period that provides employees with relevant accreditation at its conclusion. A 30-day course upskills and accredits SSE engineers to install and maintain the new generation of domestic smart energy meters and deliver energy awareness advice to consumers. Both of these courses are recurring according to the accreditation needs of employers. The college also offers apprenticeships in this sector. On average, around 15 apprentices start every year and attend the college for each year of their 3-year apprenticeship. After successful work placements, many of these apprentices are recruited directly from students on plumbing courses in the college. The industry focussed, flexible approach of staff in the college results in highly valued courses that maximises opportunities for students and the industry. However, their absolute favourite is Dundonald Links, they love the course.” The courses run throughout July and August and this year is expecting to welcome 100 students to Scotland this summer. The previous two years saw 26 in
the first year of the International Summer School and 58 in year two. Carey was recognised just how well the business has performed when she was named a finalist in the Entrepreneur of the Year category at last year’s Ayrshire Business Awards.

International Summer School for Teens is an all-encompassing education programme, offering full immersion in the English language, as well as sporting and creative excellence and proud to call Ayrshire its home. The fledgling business is preparing to welcome students from across the world for the third year to Scotland and while they are based at Stirling University during their stay the visits to Ayrshire are the most popular. Carey Rowe runs the business from their Stewarton base and has no plans to move it from Ayrshire as she plans the summer schedule for this year for the students, “we’re an Ayrshire based, international business.” Something of a globetrotter, Carey’s lived in Kenya, America, South Africa and Mexico to name a few and from that experience developed a programme for International students to sample the best of what Scotland has to offer. She explained: “Our students come from all over the world and we give them something to remember. A lot of those who come excel in sport, golf in particular, and we’ve been able to build our programmes to allow them to improve while at the same
