CHAMBER'S BUSY PLATINUM YEAR CONTINUES
This year continues to be an active and stimulating one for the Board, the whole team at the Chamber and for our Members in this special Platinum Anniversary. Throughout our Platinum year we have provided a number of different events such as 5-a-side Football, An Audience with Sir Tom Hunter and The Great Ayrshire Bakeoff, with the finale of “It’s a Knockout” still to come, during which the profile of the Chamber has both risen and been extended to a new level of awareness. More importantly however, during this year we have been encouraged to review and revisit how we do things, and what offerings we make available to our Members. We have reviewed all of these things from a wholly new perspective starting with a completely blank sheet of paper. Arising from that review we are introducing a new Membership model which recognises that our Membership is diverse in its nature, shape, and size and represents the whole spectrum of business and commerce, and nowadays the traditional “one size fits all model” is perhaps no longer ideally fit for its original purpose. Accordingly our new model, which rolls out to new Members in April and to existing Members at the time of your
GRAEME MCKINSTRY ACCI PRESIDENT
renewal, comprises a range of different Membership categories from Enterprise through Premier, Enhanced and Corporate, all of which have associated and relevant benefits and opportunities. Whilst the new model is the highlight of the Chamber, the entire year has been an extremely exciting time of opportunity, and you are encouraged to visit our website to see more details or to contact the team at Chamber HQ to find out more about which category best suits you and your business. Looking through to the summer, please remember the remaining Platinum event and book your place for the grand finale at The Paddock Lawn Marquee, Ayr Racecourse on 14 June 2018.
VAL IS A WOMEN OF INSPIRATION
Having spent 19 years driving forward a Chamber which proactively works with its members to initiate economic change, personally championing many initiatives to support education and employability for the future workplace, our CEO has now been recognised as a Woman of Inspiration by the Association of Scottish Business Women. Under Val’s leadership, the Ayrshire Chamber team has recently undertaken a major overhaul of membership to better suit the economic challenges facing the business community and to future proof the Chamber. Working across all sectors, Val’s ability to lead, persuade and innovate has been crucial in establishing one of the most respected Chambers within the Network.

CHAMBER EVENTS DIARY
Things are Changing!
AND IT’S TIME TO TELL YOU MORE… There has been so much happening over the past few months at the Ayrshire Chamber as we shape a new membership model that supports our future vision for the Chamber and our members. As we celebrated our 70th Platinum Anniversary last year we felt it was a perfect opportunity to review our membership offering and take the time to listen and engage with our members to understand their thoughts around the current model, asking; what works, doesn’t work - what could we do better? Various ideation and research sessions took place throughout 2017, providing the platform to speak with stakeholders, helping shape a new model and offering that will support the Ayrshire Chamber members both now and in the future.
YOUR BUSINESS | SPRING 2018
So, I’m delighted to say we will be introducing a ‘new tiered’ system that will provide our members with options, not a one size fits all, where they can select a package based on their business requirements. From Enterprise, to Corporate our new model has been developed by listening to our members and creating a model that works for all businesses. We are excited about the various new benefits within the tiered offerings including discounted Business Boosts, Business of the Week, Gym and Car incentives, plus much more. We have also launched our Future Chamber programme that supports under 35-year olds under our new Enterprise model. This new initiative is funded by and in partnership with our Platinum Partners for Business.
4
As of April 1st 2018, anyone new joining the Chamber will select from the new tiered model, with all existing members transferring at time of membership renewal. We will continue to keep you updated over the coming weeks. Our ambassadors who can be seen from the right page image will be sharing their stories with you soon, keep an eye out. If you would like to discuss the new model in more detail and what it means for you, please call a membership team member today on 01292 678666. This is such an exciting time for the Chamber, with so much to look forward to. I’m in, are you?

THISTLE HELP EXPAND INTO NEW PREMISES

Irvine business Thistle Help, who provide specialist mobility and small aid products for the elderly and disabled, are please to announce they are expanding. They currently operate from Portland Avenue, Irvine where they have a spacious showroom displaying a wide range of mobility products including lift & rise recliner chairs, mobility scooters, wheelchairs, adjustable beds and daily living aids. Due to business growth and increased services, they took the strategic decision to expand into new premises. It was apparent the time was right to separate their showroom from the workshop and create a warehouse area. The owners, George Ruddick and Laura Hays want to ensure that their customers continue to receive the highest level of service available. George said “The new premises will allow us to showcase our current range whilst giving our engineers better facilities to operate from”. When the premises next door to their existing showroom became available, George and Laura decided to explore the possibility of renting it from North Ayrshire Council. The new premises are a mirror image of their current showroom and obviously being next door, keeps the operations on-site.
The new premises will allow them to move their workshop area next door as well as using it as a warehouse area thus freeing up more space in their showroom. With the support of the Business Growth Team from North Ayrshire Council, the expansion has been made somewhat easier through both funding and advice. The Thistle Help team are excited about the expansion and are looking forward to the future. Laura said “As our business is growing, this is the next step for us. I hope by freeing up showroom space, we will continue to provide a unique customer experience”.

TROON COMPANY WIN BIG CONTRACT IN THE USA System integration specialists, iTech, have secured the largest order in the company’s 29-year history to upgrade 3 Wiresaw machines situated in their clients facility in Vancouver, WA. USA. The contract is worth upwards of £500k. The company has previously carried out successful upgrade projects at one of the clients other locations on similar type machinery. Managing Director, Ian McCartney says “This is in fact the second time we have carried out upgrade work in the USA, previously it was one machine and this time its three. It’s a huge achievement and testimony to the quality of our work, for us to have secured a contract of this size” Wiresaw machines are used in the semiconductor industry and are used to slice silicon
into silicon wafers. iTech carried out the upgrades due to the lack of available parts and a reduction in reliability and performance coupled with the fact that the original machine manufacturers have ceased trading so there is no support or assistance available. Ian states “iTech carried out all aspects of the upgrade from sourcing new mechanics, modifying the electrical design, supervising local electrical contractors to install and cable the new components to reprogramming the new PLC (programmable logic controller), HMI and Scada visualisation and a multi axis motion control servo
drive system and then commissioning the project” iTech started the project early February and it will continue through to late June of this year. For information on iTech and what the company does visit www.itech-troon.co.uk

AUCHRANNIE COMPLETES TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP TO EMPLOYEES CELEBRATING MEMORIES
Luxury resort Auchrannie has announced it has completed its transition to become Scotland’s latest employee-owned business, with 160 members of staff becoming owners. Located in Brodick on the Isle of Arran, Auchrannie is an award-winning resort comprising two 4-star hotels, thirty 5-star self-catering lodges, two leisure clubs, three individually branded restaurants, a children’s Playbarn, an ASPA spa and Arran Adventure outdoor company.
YOUR BUSINESS | SPRING 2018
An Employee Ownership Trust has been formed and holds 100% of the shares on behalf of the employees. The deal was structured in order to make it affordable to the business without affecting its ability to reward the team and reinvest for the future. It marks the first time a hotel or resort in Scotland has become employee-owned.
8
Commenting on the decision, co-founder and managing director Linda Johnston said: “We first started looking at employee ownership in 2015 and the first formal meetings were held in early 2016. Many exit options were considered over the years but none protected the ethos of the company, the existing team or the community use of Auchrannie’s facilities for future generations like employee ownership did. “The team have been involved in the process from an early stage and were given the opportunity to input throughout. They have very much embraced the concept of employee ownership and
are extremely excited about it. They are delighted that Auchrannie’s legacy will be protected and that they have the chance to play an active part in, and benefit from, Auchrannie’s future success. Auchrannie’s transition to employee ownership was supported by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and Co-operative Development Scotland (CDS), with the process managed by Co-ownership Solutions LLP and legal services by Burness Paull LLP. Linda continued: “The transition has been pretty smooth despite the fact that Auchrannie is a complex business; we have been well supported by HIE, CDS, Co-ownership Solutions and Burness Paull. Although there have been a number of hurdles to jump over, there have been no real lows.” By transferring their shares to an Employee Ownership Trust, the ex-shareholders have also protected Auchrannie’s contribution to the island. It is very much part of the community and provides essential wet weather facilities, other amenities and support to the island’s residents and its visitors. Linda concluded: “Employee ownership will give the whole Auchrannie team a stake in the continued growth of the business. All of us will work together to build a more efficient, sustainable and profitable business. We are all excited to continue on our journey in which we strive to lead the way in Scottish tourism and create amazing experiences for our guests and an awesome place to work for our team.”
Dementia is a brain illness that has been given more prominence recently through public health campaigns and as the number of people affected has increased over the years. Dementia affects individuals in many ways and care needs to be personalised to suit the person. A meaningful activity can help individuals with dementia relate to an interest that they had. Reminiscing and use of music has proven to be a great therapy to help those with dementia and we see examples of this in the media every day. Celebrating Memories are an innovative reminiscing service using images and music. They engage with groups and individuals with fun sessions that challenge, but due to the entertaining nature, encourages active involvement. Celebrating Memories are run by Lawrence Lindsay who has experience of working with people with dementia for ten years in daycare and through individual support work. As part of his work he created some reminiscing sessions on sport, movies and television and this has developed into his organisation called Celebrating Memories. Lawrence visits local Care Homes, Day-cares, community groups and local hospitals with his reminiscing service for people with dementia. As he visits places on a regular basis he works to create a more personalised aspect despite the fact the sessions are aimed at groups. Celebrating Memories have a positive image in Ayrshire and they also worked recently with the BBC on their recent Dementia project. Our Business Solutions team is dedicated to ensuring Ayrshire's businesses have the best quality training available to develop their workforce. From the ongoing conversations we have with local businesses, we have been able to decide together how the College can meet employee skills needs now and in the future. The main areas that businesses have told us they are looking to receive training in have been around improving digital skills and first line management skills. We have responded by creating a diverse range of new courses. We are now offering Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM) courses in coaching and leadership. Two additional programmes have been created to support the development of digital skills within Ayrshire’s workforce. New one-day courses have also been established in business improvement techniques, Office 365, recruitment skills, infographics and presentation skills. Speaking to local organisations has allowed us to hear first-hand exactly what they would like to see over the next 12 months. This will help to shape our short course portfolio in the future. A house is more than just bricks; it is memories, good times and family gatherings. Home is really where the heart is and no one knows this better than Stephen MacVean, Managing Director of Limegreen Estate Agents. Stephen has been in the property industry since 2003. Initially dealing with lettings, then moving into sales when Limegreen was established. His passion for property started at the young age of 24, whilst he was still working at British Aerospace. He built up his own portfolio of property in the local area, which fuelled his passion for the Estate Agency business. We have separate, dedicated departments for lettings & sales administration, all backed up and supported by a dedicated Marketing division. This structure separates us from our competitors as each team is focused on delivering top results for our clients. The great thing is, we offer an extremely competitive fee structure with no commission and no hidden charges. Our proven success
is easy to measure by continued repeat customers and many referrals. Stephen is also more than aware of the importance of Limegreen's situation as a business at the heart of the local community. We have been involved in various activities recently including a festive, educational project in partnership with Heathfield Primary School. This involved Limegreen displaying Primary 3 Christmas themed drawings in our Prestwick office window display. In appreciation Limegreen provided, as a gift, educational storybooks for every pupil. We also donated a food hamper for Heathfield Harvest Festival Assembly. We always help where we can. Stephen MacVean and his company are now looking forward to 2018, the fresh challenges that will bring and how the team will develop the business. Growth is always key to that success, but as Stephen makes clear, enterprising work within the Ayrshire community can also bring rewards and pleasure.

It’s Friday night, the end of a shift and time to head home for a bit of rest and recuperation, unless you are one of Britain’s Reservists... Ryan Reid from Ayrshire is one of those people, he works for ASDA in Cumnock as an Ambient Colleague in stock control. Ryan is also a member of 251 (Ayrshire) Squadron of The Royal Logistic Corps based in Irvine. At the beginning of 2017 he went off to Grantham in Lincolnshire for three weeks and completed his basic training to become a reservist. In July he was trained to drive C + E vehicles by another member of his unit, who is herself a trained military driving instructor. He is now qualified to drive the wide range of vehicles that the unit in Irvine has, plus the civilian vehicles of the same class. Not only can he drive these vehicles but as a class three tradesman he can also maintain and service them. We caught up with Ryan very early one Saturday morning in the Garlochhead Training Camp on the West Coast of Scotland. He was preparing to take part in Exercise Scottish Rover, a test of safe and skilled driving with difficult navigation without the benefit of a Satellite Navigation system. The exercise was being delivered by 154 Transport Regiment as part of its continual training programme for its logisticians. This particular exercise would involve a test of Ryan’s cross –country driving skills and his Navigator’s ability to map read around various locations by day and night. They were carrying out the training in a MAN SV truck, one of the vehicles that the unit is equipped with. The exercise was itself a shining example of masterful organisation and the brain child of another reservist Major Donald Urquhart. We listened to him briefing the teams before they began their task. The exercise is not a question of speed but one of accuracy, which way does the team approach a checkpoint? Have they noted all of the secret way markers in the correct order? And if there is a budding racing car driver amongst the teams, beware, there are manned speed traps all over the course to catch anyone who thinks that speed is the answer. The teams are briefed on how to deal with every eventuality including the need to wear a high visibility vest when out of the vehicle, how to deal with vehicle faults, what to do in the event of an accident or creating any damage and even what time meals would be for the rest of the weekend. It was particularly impressive to discover that amongst the many back-up staff, is a dedicated damage repair team. That in the case of any sort of manoeuvring incident or simply mud being transferred to a tarmacked road, any associated damage can be dealt with straight away. We chatted to Ryan about his time in the Reserves and he was very enthusiastic about what it had done for him. His own self confidence had gone from strength to strength since joining and he had become far more aware of his own challenges and was happy to take advice and help. He had met loads of people and made new friendships. Yes, some of the training had taken him out of his comfort zone but that was a fabulous learning experience. He had attended the Summer mountain leaders course in Wales and had thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and now looked forward to the winter component that is far more demanding, leading soldiers in inclement weather.

SMALL BUSINESS BRAIN FOR HIRE... A NEW MEMBER EXPLAINS
Small Business Brain is about guidance to help entrepreneurial people to be more effective. It’s built on almost 50 years of experience in mostly small and medium, and the odd large organisation. As David Michelson explains “I believe that “Plan beats no plan”; that an “outsider’s view” will see your business differently; and that having help almost always helps!” David continued, with this example: “Almost two years ago I was asked to help a commercial services business in Irvine. The two founders, a husband and wife team, told me that their business had grown so quickly they felt that they were overwhelmed by the tasks that they needed to keep doing just to keep going. We met a couple of times to talk about ways to improve things, and then agreed to provide regular support meetings to help them to prioritise and manage the business. We worked on the basics, including time management and using effective to-do lists, taking time out to reflect and plan weekly and monthly tasks, goals, milestones. They asked for help with marketing and sales prospecting, managing a website update, planning the recruitment of staff and considering new premises, to help them grow. The result has been continued growth which they can control, targets that are always realistic, and planning formats to make sure that they stay on track and aware of how they are doing.” To find out more - have a look at www.dmcoach.co.uk

If we're feeling negative, we can feel 'stuck' and our view of the world narrows. This is also true in the workplace, where looking for the positive in each day can help us and others around us feel good in the moment, and can transform how we feel. Positivity helps us develop resilience, cope better with stress and be more productive. Having a positive outlook in difficult times is also an important predictor of how quickly we recover from adversity. That's why Breathing Space - Scotland's mental health phone service - has launched the 365 Brighter Days campaign. Tony McLaren, Breathing Space National Coordinator said: "Positivity is not easy, it requires practise. Encouraging a positive mindset through simple approaches such as mindfulness, exercise, breathing techniques and positive interactions with others, is important for wellbeing. We can foster a more positive working environment through looking at what works well, showing appreciation for the work of others, giving people the benefit of the doubt and speaking well of others. Employees face lots of challenges both in and outside of work so being treated with kindness, understanding and respect results in a happier, more productive workplace." The 365 Brighter Days campaign is a year-long programme of events to promote a positive outlook to life. It highlights that phoning Breathing Space is a positive first step for anyone feeling low, anxious or stressed. You can’t just stop thinking a certain way, you have to start thinking a new way. Are you ready to take on the challenge to practise positivity each day? Breathing Space is a free and confidential mental health phone service where advisors offer care, compassion, signposting and advice to anyone over the age of 16 needing support. Open evenings and weekends, 0800 83 85 87.

YOUR BUSINESS | SPRING 2018
Jamie Haining is a graphic designer, motion graphics designer and web designer based in Ayrshire. When starting up his company, one of the first challenges faced was designing and creating the company logo. “I am my own worst client and wanted the right logo to represent me and my work”. Jamie says “I started with three specific ideas for my brief. Firstly, I wanted to use the abbreviated ‘C78’, I like the idea of clients being so familiar with the company that they feel comfortable using the shortened name. Secondly, I liked the idea of using segments, maybe like a digital watch you’d see in 1978. Thirdly, was another reference to the ’78’ (this one was just for me as I am sure no one would even know this without being told), but all the letters are tilted at a 78º angle. I tried numerous versions of each of these 3 concepts and decided to include them all!” “Once I was happy with the symbol, I spent a bit of time choosing a suitable font. I wanted something that would be strong for the logo, but with different, softer weights and that would be good for body text and headings so the logo font would continue throughout the brand.” “I created a logo that I am very happy with, strong and instantly recognisable. I am happy with the stories and ideas the make the logo and passionately tell anyone that is willing to listen! I am very much of the opinion that if something has a reason behind it, the end product benefits greatly.” Contact Jamie to make sure your branding is current and represents all you can be!

STALKING ...... WHAT IS IT? BE AWARE, VERY AWARE! As an employer, are you aware of the potential problems stalking brings to the workplace and your duty of care to your employees? Since ‘stalking’became criminalised in 2010 (sec 39, Criminal Justice and Licensing (Scot) Act "Offence of Stalking"), employers have a legal responsibility to respond effectively when stalking presents within their workplace. A failure to do so may lead to costly litigation further down the line. Research has found that stalking victims can display symptoms similar to post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression, leading to low productivity, increased sickness absence and stress-related illness. Approximately 50% of stalking victims have "curtailed or ceased work as a consequence of being stalked" (Mullen et al 2006: 177; Stalking Risk Profile 2011). It is important, therefore, that employees who believe they are being stalked get the right support quickly and effectively. Stalking is more common than you would think, with 1 in 6 people having been stalked over a 12-month period (UK National Stalking Survey 2015). Stalking can come in a variety of guises, and which can leave the victim living with uncertainty and fear. For some, it is a life changing experience which can be difficult to recover from. In extreme cases, it may lead to suicide or murder. Action Against Stalking (AAS) is the UK-wide charity based in Scotland. It has pioneered the recognition of stalking as a specific criminal offence. It champions the rights of stalking victims and supports them through: • • • • • •
Short term crisis intervention and support; Signposting to relevant agencies/organisations; Information and advice; Assistance with safety planning; Encouragement/support to report the offence; Multi-agency partnerships to improve response to victims.
The workplace may well be where an employee exhibits the first signs of distress. Employers need to be able to assist them timeously. AAS can provide employers with practical advice and support, including policy development, bespoke training programmes, workshops, seminars and conferences. Knowledge and understanding of stalking is hugely important. The forthcoming National Stalking Awareness day on 18th April should be circled in everyone's diary as a significant event. Employers are urged to encourage activities to promote awareness and raise funds for AAS to develop the first-ever Specialised Multi-agency Stalking Victim Support Service. To find out more about stalking, how AAS can help you, or to assist with fund-raising activities, please visit www.actionagainststalking.org or contact enquires@actionagainststalking.org
LOCAL LAUNDRY STEAMERS IS FULL STEAM AHEAD Steamers was started in 2005 as a home business offering Ironing Services by local girl Marianne Long. Since moving to premises at 8 Ritchie Street, West Kilbride in March 2016 the business has gone from strength to strength, now offering not just ironing but a whole host of services including laundry, dry cleaning and alterations and now employing 3 people. Due to the increase in business Steamers has decided to move to bigger premises just along the road on Ritchie Street. “Having the bigger premises means we can expand the business
even further and offer new services to our increasing customer base. It’s very exciting and I have a fantastic team of staff who I couldn’t manage without.” “We have been overwhelmed by the support shown to us since opening the shop and value all of our customers greatly, we strive to offer the best service possible” “The new premises at 39 Ritchie Street was actually a laundrette in the 60’s and 70’s and we hope to be there for many years to come” says Marianne, owner of Steamers Laundry Services.

This year, for the first time, they have also welcomed P7 pupils from the cluster primary schools. KYLE GET THE MESSAGE OUT LO & CLEAR! Getting the right messages about careers to parents is one of the big challenges we face here at DYW Ayrshire. Kyle Academy came up with the innovative idea of combining their subject choice evening with a careers event, and the result was fantastic! 18 employers, further & higher education institutions attended on the evening to speak with pupils and their parents about routes into industry or the selection of courses they offer. For many of the parents, this was the first opportunity they had to speak with employers about apprenticeships, with GE Caledonian offering Foundation Apprenticeships, along with Modern and Graduate Apprenticeships in Engineering. This path is also offered by UTC Aerospace Systems, who were also in attendance, alongside RT Resources who offer a wide array of Modern Apprenticeships and training solutions for young people in social care, construction, glass & glazing, manufacturing, and the service sectors.

So many different ways to so many great careers, all was covered in this event which was, sadly, Head Teacher Lyndsay McRoberts’ last before taking up her new post out of the area.

Pupils studying National 5 Business Management at St Matthew’s Academy recently visited Ardagh Glass in Irvine. The visit provided the young people with a greater understanding of manufacturing and production lines within the topic of operations. Faculty Head of ICT, Tracy Allen contacted DYW Ayrshire explaining she was looking for her class to visit a local business to strengthen their understanding of this subject area. Operations Manager at Ardagh Glass, Allen Paterson was happy to accommodate the workplace visit which acted as excellent exam
revision for students. Tracy Allen said, “A huge thank you to Allen and Steven at Ardagh Glass who put a real life experience in place to support the teaching of the operations unit for national 5 business management pupils. Pupils were able to experience flow production first hand and were well looked after.” Pupils commented: “The glass factory was fascinating and very useful for information about the business. It was a very interesting day out and being able to be part of the glass making process was amazing. I really enjoyed my day here with the welcoming members of staff.”

Irvine Royal Academy pupil Scott had his work placement at Santander in Irvine. Scott has been a credit to himself and his school. He has been punctual, well presented and engaged with all the staff. Through the week Scott has spent time with all the different job roles within the branch and seen how they try to help customers with their financial needs. The team loved having Scott in the branch and showing him all the roles and jobs they do.

Charlotte McDonald Stewarton Academy LOCHAVEN INTERNATIONAL When I worked for a week at Lochaven International, it gave me a real insight in the world of working in the fashion and textiles industry. I was allowed to try out a few of the machines such as the over locker and the presser which are used every day in the factory. As well as gaining all this experience from the machines and the other fellow workers, I was also allowed to make a few things to take home. The most popular of these, being a cat jumper, initially made from the pattern piece for a dog coat which hasn’t been used since the Burberry collection of dog coats which were for Prince Charles’ dogs. In doing so, it gave me a greater insight in the way that the pieces of fabric join together, how to hide the stitching and how to how to cut out the fabric cleanly, to ensure that the jumper fits correctly. Although despite my accuracy at making the jumper, it was no surprise that my cat wasn’t too keen!

James Piper Stewarton Academy BILLY BOWIE At my work experience I had a good time both learning and with the company I was with. I learned a lot about how to go about a few tasks like stripping down a compressor engine and changing the bearings on a prop shaft. I learned how to work with other people in a formal environment. It was also enjoyable time because it was a very practical experience and I was able to find out what it would have been like in a week of being a mechanic.

I always had an aspiration to be a Vet but was not 100% sure if it was right for me and was very fortunate to get some experience at MBM Vets in Kilmarnock. The staff were very friendly and made me feel very welcome and took the time to explain things to me. During my time I was able to observe consultations covering routine check-ups, vaccinations to poorly animals in need of some attention. These observations were very insightful to the kind of challenges that would be presented to me as a Vet. I also learned to appreciate that there is a lot of preparation required for surgeries and helped fold and store the towel packs for this, not to mention cleaning out the cages so the animals had clean bedding while they were there. I really appreciate the time the staff took to share their experiences and make me feel one of the team. I was even invited back! Without this experience I would still be unsure if this was the right career for me but thankfully I now know.
