CEO’S WELCOME
MOVING FORWARD WITH AYRSHIRE CHAMBER
It’s been a busy time here at the Chamber. We’re a year into our new membership model and the feedback we continue to receive shows this has been a great success. This edition of ‘Your Business’ focuses on looking back, moving forward and we hope you enjoy reading some of our member stories. We think you will all agree we have some amazing and varied companies here in Ayrshire and hope you will join us in congratulating all those with special Anniversaries. We ourselves are celebrating the 10th Ayrshire Chamber Business Awards that launches at the end of June – see page 7 for details. The winners of our awards are announced at a special dinner at the end of Business Week in October. Planning is well underway for a full programme of events across Ayrshire during this annual event which will run from 7th to 11th October 2019. Make sure you follow us on our social media channels and keep up to date with events on our website so as not to miss out #BW19 #ABA19 We are loathed to mention the B word but please be assured we are gearing up for Brexit by employing extra documentation staff internally and holding some export training for our valued members. We are pleased to be involved with a new, ground breaking, schools mentoring initiative. Research shows that students engaging with employers proves to be beneficial to all involved. Now we are
linking Head Teachers with Business leaders. To date this has been well received and we believe it to be the first scheme of its kind in Scotland. Our Future Chamber has started its second year and we look forward to working with our new cohort. Details can be found on page 19. We would like to welcome our new team members: Alex joins our International Trade Team, Kate is our new Business Administration Apprentice and Natalie and Catrina have joined the DYW employer engagement team. We will also soon be saying goodbye to Anne who is retiring after being with the Chamber for over 20 years. We would like
VAL RUSSELL AYRSHIRE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CEO
to thank her for her dedicated service, she will be sorely missed and we wish her well in her retirement.

A big supporter of the Scottish gin and whisky industry, Geraldo’s staff are accrediated as Gin and Whisky Ambassadors and the shop regularly hosts drinks tastings and masterclasses.
this Five Star accreditation which we have strived towards over the last three years is just amazing. The suggestions made by the previous assessor were taken on board and we worked closely with our brand designers to implement as many of those as possible. This combined with the excellent team of staff we now have on board gives us much more confidence in delivering a more consistent experience for our customers both in the shop and online.”

BOOTH WELSH IS CELEBRATING 30 YEARS
4
Booth Welsh is an international engineering company, founded in 1989 by John Welsh. As 2019 marks its 30th year of business, Booth Welsh has come a long way from the early days as a family run Instrumentation and Electrical business to become an innovative engineering technology company, currently employing around 270 people worldwide. Booth Welsh is proud of its achievements over the last 30 years but even more so, proud to have done it all from home here in Ayrshire. Booth Welsh has succeeded in staying ahead of the curve and adapting its service offerings to align with today’s world and the demands of clients and industries. Traditionally, Booth Welsh offer a full lifecycle approach with expertise in the process industries, still covering traditional services in Electrical, Control and Instrumentation but now across a number of industries including Oil & Gas,
widely known as “Industry 4.0” and the potential it would provide for all businesses. This fresh mindset allowed the team to find a starting point to drive its innovation journey and this has gained international traction at events within America, Australia and the Middle East.
Pharmaceuticals, Food & Beverage, Chemical & Utilities. Within the last 2 years, Booth Welsh has added to its list of services, providing a Digital Advantage solution which allows clients to unlock the power of their people and their assets using the latest technology, and ensure they are ‘digital ready’. Booth Welsh realised the disruptive impact which would come with the next industrial revolution
Much like Digitalisation and Industry 4.0, Booth Welsh also realises the potential in Ayrshire. Managing Director, Martin Welsh is a proud Ayrshire Chamber Board Director and along with like-minded businesses, he is passionate about providing opportunities for the people within the local community and especially the opportunity that the Ayrshire Growth Deal presents to this area. Booth Welsh also host and attend several events and initiatives throughout the year that help to support Ayrshire business and charities. Ampcontrol UK, a local company turned international powerhouse, has a rich history stretching back to 1918 – celebrating 100 years of operation last year. Now, in a further achievement to its listing as a finalist in the Ayrshire Business Chamber Awards late last year, it recently received the prestigious Scottish Engineering President’s Award for its significant contribution to both setting and raising the standard for the engineering sector. Back in 1918, the business was known as Wallacetown Engineering, a mechanical engineering company that repaired mining equipment for Scottish collieries. As the mining industry developed, the sector required more electrical power underground so the business diversified into the manufacture of flameproof switchgear. It continued
to expand and diversify then a change in ownership and merger saw the company change its name to Allenwest Wallacetown. In 2007, the firm was acquired by Ampcontrol, a global technology company hailing from one of Australia’s mining heartlands – The Hunter Valley in New South Wales. Since a 2015 change in strategy, the UK company has grown in leaps and bounds. Ampcontrol UK’s Managing Director, Steven Edmund, says, “The new strategy meant a heavier focus on engineering and technical support for our existing site, and with the support of our Australian operations the development of new products and process improvement changes to enhance our technology. We know that one of our biggest differentiators is our reputation for supplying quality-made and fit-for-purpose products, along with our impressive product range across the world.”
(L-R): Paul Sheerin (CEO, Scottish Engineering), Steven Edmund (Managing Director, Ampcontrol UK) and Alastair Johnstone (President, Scottish Engineering)
Ampcontrol UK is focussed on diversification in a number of areas within the European infrastructure markets, including large-scale tunnelling projects across major cities in the UK and Europe – and is likely to achieve many more big wins. Visit ampcontrolgroup.co.uk for further information.

advent of online shopping has naturally presented further challenges. Despite the hurdles, Carrick Bathrooms has survived and rather than seeing it as a hard time Kenny looks on it as more of a challenge to overcome.
He says ‘I can honestly say I really didn’t have a clue what I was doing in the early days. I started out with the help of the Prince’s Trust and with their support invested in a van and a mobile phone. There was a steep learning curve and many challenges but with the help of a bank loan I opened my first showroom with 5 small displays. I did all the jobs required; store man, estimator, buyer and salesperson. Within a year I had paid back the loan and moved to the current premises in New Road. I now have a staff of 6 and I have to say I owe the success of the business to them. They have been the backbone of the company.
‘I have always believed our clients would prefer to buy from a trusted local supplier getting a better understanding of the product with expert advice and if anything were to go wrong we are here to help.’ The last ten years have marked a challenging chapter in the Carrick Bathrooms story, as for so many small businesses. As a company that has diversified to both install bathrooms and also supply products to customers with their own installers, the recession was a difficult time. Additionally the

He said: “As we mark our 30th year, our message to the wonderful people of Ayrshire is, thank you! We wouldn’t be able to deliver the level of care we do, free of charge, if it wasn’t for your support. “We have an incredible group of volunteers and fundraisers across Ayrshire - some of whom have given their time for over 30 years - and without their efforts, the hospice simply wouldn’t be here. Because of their combined determination we have access to some of the best palliative care treatments available. We have been privileged to give thousands of patients and their families the care and support they need, both at the hospice itself and at home over the last 30 years and we take great pride in that”. However, the Ayrshire Hospice story does not actually begin 30 years ago. Six years earlier in 1983 a group of hard working and committed citizens dedicated their time to form a Trust, with the goal of raising the necessary funds to open a hospice in Ayrshire. After the initial fundraising target of

£400,000 was met within 21 months, the next task was to find a suitable location for the hospice. ‘Gargowan’ on Racecourse Road, Ayr, was identified after an exhaustive search throughout Ayrshire and building work began in 1987. From fundraising by plunging into the cold sea during winter or plodding the starlit streets of Ayr, to volunteering valuable time and skills for a few hours a week, the unstinting commitment from the people of Ayrshire all contributes to ensuring the highest levels of specialist palliative and end of life care now, and for years to come. The long term sustainability and future financial health of the hospice is of paramount importance to the Hospice Board and senior management team. As an independent charity, the hospice, like any other organisation, must find ways to address increasing costs and other

emerging external pressures. The Ayrshire Business community will continue to play a vital role in future strategies, helping to ensure the Ayrshire Hospice is here for the next 30 years and beyond. Through the charity’s Business Ambassador scheme it can call on the advice, expertise, networking and fundraising support of some of Ayrshire’s prominent business leaders and officials. John added: “We are fortunate that the business community in Ayrshire has never been shy in coming forward to support their local hospice. Their eagerness and willingness to support our work is not taken for granted and is massively appreciated. “We meet regularly with our business ambassadors who have been great at sharing their experiences in business to help the hospice move forward.”

WALLACE MCDOWALL CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE IN ENGINEERING

Back in 1968 a young man from Glasgow, Bill Slattery, left the Army seeing a future for himself designing and manufacturing in the metal business. Along with Archie McDowall, Bill rented a shed from John Wallace & Son’s and began “tin bashing” in earnest. Wallace McDowall Ltd was then incorporated on 10th April 1969. Wallace McDowall went on to design and develop many varied projects such as an expandable grain silo, security doors, roll formed beams, and a patented portable goal system to name just a few. Bill even successfully redesigned the superstructure for a Naval Patrol Boat! To facilitate all this expansion they have moved premises several times. 1998 saw the appointment of Managing Director, Jim Wilson, to expand into the Sub-Contract sector with the aim of supplying global companies such as Hyster, Terex and Caterpillar. The need for space resulted in another move.

This massive facility has the ability to handle the biggest and smallest of projects for all of their customers.
Bill’s entrepreneurial spirit is kept alive and kicking as the company continues to design, develop and produce customers own products. Led by four Directors Jim Wilson, Logan Collins, Derek Johnstone and Billy Wilson who, along with company secretary Yvonne Ward, have over 125 years’ service between them. “We were already running a small business hiring out refrigerated trailers (Frosty Fridge Trailers), using a penguin as our logo, calling him Frosty. As that business grew, ‘Frosty’ became almost like a third partner in the business! Our customers responded really well to him, so it was an easy decision to bring the cleaning services into the brand and use it to stand out from the crowd locally.” By 2017, Frosty’s Cleaning Services had added a full range of interior and exterior services to their portfolio, and launched a slick new website. By offering a diverse range of services, including gutter cleaning, pressure washing, UPVC cleaning, window cleaning, oven cleaning, carpet cleaning, and their latest
addition of end of tenancy/deep cleaning, Gavin & Victoria have ensured they are busy throughout the year. Exterior services keep them busy in the summer months, while oven and carpet cleans tend to be most popular over winter months.
The most important element to success for Frosty’s though is customer recommendations, says Gavin, “We use the hashtag #trustfrosty in all our social media posts, and it really is at the heart of what we do. We want our customers to be confident in our ability to do what we say we’ll do, when we say we’ll do it. This also allows us to attract commercial clients who rely on us to deliver what they are looking for in a professional and efficient way.” To find out more about Frosty’s Cleaning Services, please call 01292 521870 or visit www.frostyscleaningservices.co.uk

BELLEISLE CONSERVATORY CHARITY The new Conservatory has a wonderful display of tropical plants and other attractions, such as its floral displays and beehive. It is open to the public all year round, with opening hours in the summer months from 10.00am-4.00pm, and in the winter from 11.00am-3.00pm. With its location adjacent to the Walled Garden in Belleisle Park, the now rebuilt Conservatory receives many accolades from the visitors to the park on how architecturally pleasing the build is. With its bistro tables and seating and its sponsored benches, it is an ideal area for a quiet period of reflection or just to enjoy the fragrances from the display of flora.
The new Conservatory is now run by Belleisle Conservatory Ltd. (BCL), a charity relying on public support to cover the ongoing maintenance and operational costs. For the financial year of 2018/19, they just passed the funding target of £40,000. As the annual funding target will continue to be a challenge, all alternatives must be explored to raise revenue - from fund raising social events for supporters, such as quiz nights and race nights, to sales of plants and honey, to the building being hired out for celebratory occasions such as weddings and anniversaries, to sponsorships of seating and plants by individuals, and windows by local businesses.
With over 10,000 visitors annually to the conservatory, and a footfall, passing by, to other areas of the park of over 80,000, this is an attractive way for many companies, who have taken a‘sponsorship’ window, to advertise their support for this fantastic local facility in Belleisle Park. The Conservatory is pleased to be the host of July’s FREE Chamber Connect Networking event. Bookings can be made now via the Chamber website. AYR, AYR, SUPER AYR The Ayr United Hospitality Suite High School Challenge has been in the making for nearly a year after Ayr United Hospitality Manager, Iain Grant contacted DYW Ayrshire with his idea. Iain previously worked at Frankie & Benny's and here had helped pioneer the Pizza and Pasta challenge which is still running a decade later. The opportunity was put to all South Ayrshire schools with Queen Margaret Academy and Belmont Academy taking this forward. An initial meeting was held with Teachers, DYW and Iain to agree timescales, challenge content and year group.
It was decided to roll out the competition to S3 Hospitality students and that the project should run April to May when schools have more flexibility whilst senior pupils are off on exam leave. Iain visited the schools individually to launch the challenge, explaining pupils should invent a new dish for Ayr United players to eat after a match that takes into account a good balance of protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats. The young people were asked to form groups of no more than 4 members and create a recipe that uses only 8 ingredients in total, 7 from a list provided by the club and 1 guest ingredient. A semi-final was then held at Queen Margaret Academy where teams from both schools presented their dish and it’s nutritional content using PowerPoint presentation to a panel of judges from Ayr United Football Club. 2 teams from each school were then selected to attend a final at Ayr United Hospitality Suite on 22nd May 2019. Here they were able to work with the club chef to cook
their creation and make any necessary tweaks before cooking again and presenting this dish to the judges. After a long deliberation ‘Crunchy Cajun Chicken’ from Belmont Academy was crowned the 2019 winner, strips of chicken breast, rolled in cornflakes and served with sweet potato wedges, tangy salsa and a side salad. The winning team will be invited to a home game in the new football season where they will be guests of the Directors and be presented with their trophy on the pitch at half time. Pupils who took part said, “It was a fun, new, and exciting experience.” and “It was a chance to meet new people and improve your cooking skills.”
ROAD TO SUCCESS Holmston Primary welcomed the Ayrshire Roads Alliance into their school. The team brought a gritter, everyone had a turn flashing the lights sitting in the driver's seat. The teacher said, 'The children really enjoyed touching the stones and pressing the buttons inside the gritter. The children enjoyed seeing a gritter up close and learning more about it'.

SOUTHCRAIG CAMPUS WORK EXPERIENCE Kay Stevenson, Deputy Head Teacher at Southcraig Campus - a school for pupils with additional support needs, shared with us the benefits pupils get by going out on work experience placements.
BARNARDOS
In the ten years I have been in post the pupils from the Southcraig school have been involved in a number of different work experiences and I can’t praise enough the opportunities, time and understanding given by the businesses involved. I have been asked whether it is a relevant experience for them, especially if there is little chance they will move onto full time employment. What is the point, and will it benefit the employer? What use would it be to them? Those students are often a hidden part

It was good. I liked sorting out things and taking them to the manager. of our community and work experience gives both them and the local community a chance to interact. It also illustrates how students with additional support needs can function well in a work placement with the appropriate supports. Most importantly it raises awareness of how people with additional support needs can, with support, be in employment. It helps to train staff in ways of communicating with people who have additional support needs. It raises awareness of how these young people can be effective contributors to society and their local community. Students and people with additional support needs are often very loyal and hard working.
It was really good. You have to work a bit hard!

PRACTICAL VIEW OF THE WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAMME
32
LMA Architects are an architectural consultancy with two offices in Ayr and Glasgow and have been involved with the school’s work experience programme in Ayrshire since its inception and continue their involvement to today. We asked them to share their experience of their involvement of the programme over the years. LMA offer 10-14 work experience placements per year; 8 are structured through the school’s work experience programme for 3/4th year pupils. 2-4 placements per year are offered to 5/6th year pupils out with the school’s programme and 3-4 placements are offered to Ayr College students on the Architectural Technology HNC course, which they support and sponsor. Steve McGhee, Principal of LMA added “Apart from the obvious benefit to the young person on the placement, there are tangible indirect benefits to our business. We find that people intrinsically want to help others and our staff are keen to pass on their skills and knowledge and they take a lot of pride in seeing the progression and development of the young person over the week and seeing them leave a different person than when they started on the Monday morning.”
01292 678666
WHAT ARE TANGIBLE INDIRECT BENEFITS TO THE BUSINESS? 1. The work experience programme allows them to identify potential future talent and they have been able to identify potential candidates who have gone on to take up seasonal and permanent positions as well as taking up places on their apprenticeship programme. 2. LMA have seen a development in their apprentices as they pass on what they have learned and at the same time gaining interpersonal and mentoring skills that they don’t get in their day job. 3. The whole team buy into the programme and gain a sense of pride and achievement seeing the development of a young person
through the week’s placement as well as extending their own learning by picking up new ways of working and different ideas. 4. They see the programme is an extension to their ‘Giving Back’ initiative where their team are encouraged to actively take part in community activities which the Practice then provide financial or volunteering support. LMA developed a work programme so that each young person will leave at the end of the week being able to competently draw in both 2D CAD and 3D model utilising industry standard software. Each young person has a final year apprentice allocated as their mentor and to be their point of contact, however, all of the team are encouraged to take time to talk to young person about their different job role and provide help and assistance.

GETTING A PIZZA’ THE ACTION
STEVE SHARES HIS TOP TIPS FOR OFFERING A WORK PLACEMENT 1. Don’t have the young person job shadow for the full week as this will lead to their disengagement. 2. Set a structure of what the young person is going to do and identify outcomes for the week. Consider teaching them a skill during the week or teaching them how to do part of a job then set them a task utilising that newly learned skill. 3. Identify a mentor for the young person to be their point of contact for the week. 4. Encourage all of your team to engage with the young person, answer their questions and tell them about their job role. 5. Spread the placements throughout the year which will allow your team to engage fully with the young person and your team won’t see it as a chore. 6. Be prepared for the benefits it will bring your business... not to mention the thank you cards and presents! Why not engage with the programme and help our young people in their development; if you do it right, your business will benefit from it.
The Frankie and Benny's S2 Challenge has come to its end for another year with a well deserving winner in each of the local authorities. • East Ayrshire: Doon Academy • North Ayrshire: Ardrossan Academy • South Ayrshire: Queen Margaret Academy The project sees S2 pupils in Home Economics design a new pizza or pasta dish for the restaurant chain. Teams firstly must work together to create a unique entry, unlike anything on the current menu whilst researching Scottish dietary goals and putting together a PowerPoint presentation of their idea. Schools then select a number of teams to go forward to a semi-final within their local authority where groups are asked to present to a panel of judges. From this the judges invite 2 teams from each school to a final within their local authority which is held at the local Frankie and Benny's restaurant. Here groups get to prepare their dish, have it cooked then make any adjustments before preparing their final dish for the taste test from judges. The competition has been supported by the chain for many years with them providing
all ingredients, generous prizes for the winners and closing the restaurants to the public while the finals are taking place. Sadly since the final in March the Irvine restaurant has closed its doors for the last time so it was great to have such a close competition this year. The judging panel did eventually crown ‘The Macho Nacho Pizza’ from Ardrossan Academy as the 2019 winner which combined Mexican and Italian flavours to create a truly spectacular dish. The Ardrossan Academy Winners said, "The competition was the best thing we have done in school this year", "I enjoyed working as a team & visiting Frankie & Benny's" and "I loved being able to come up with my own pizza design, it was so cool." Vicky McNicol, Home Economics Teacher at Ardrossan Academy added, “Working with DYW in the North Ayrshire Frankie & Benny's competition was the highlight of many of our S2 pupils at Ardrossan Academy. I am so glad we made time for this in our curriculum as the pupils benefited from teamwork, using their own judgement, making pizza’s and pasta’s from scratch whilst meeting the task set. The fact the pupils get to visit the restaurant & receive a prize, really boosts their enthusiasm
