PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
LOOKING FORWARD TO 2019
I am delighted to be writing my first ‘President’s Column’ in Your Business magazine.
My first months have certainly been busy starting with the AGM, followed by the excitement of Business Week and culminating with the Business Awards Dinner, there is nothing like being thrown in at the deep end! Business Week was a very successful series of events and it was heartening to see the number and diversity of members taking part in each of these. It is always great to see the familiar faces of those that support our events and get value from their membership but it is also always great to see new faces and companies being represented. One of the highlights for me personally was the launch event, ‘Ambition to Inspire’ at Ayr Town Hall which was themed to focus on the Year of Young People. It was fantastic to see the number of school and college students, not just attending, but engaging enthusiastically with the event. Vice President, Frank Gormanley, MC for the occasion had us all ‘buzzing’ and the panel of Future Chamber members and young entrepreneurs together with keynote speaker Fraser Docherty were inspirational, not just for the young people, but also the business
CHAMBER NEWS
A BUSY END TO THE YEAR It has been a busy few months at your Chamber with much more still to come. The Business Excellence Award is moving into its judging stage and we cannot wait to announce the winner at our Annual Dinner next spring. Make sure you save the date in your diaries now – see page 4. This year’s Business Week was a great success with over 1200 people attending the various events throughout the week. The Awards dinner
members in attendance.
The Ayrshire Question Time lunch, which followed the very well attended Business to Business exhibition at the Park Hotel, was another interesting event with the impressive panel of Steve Dunlop, CEO of Scottish Enterprise, Ross Martin, Advisor on Regional Economies Scottish Government and Paula Ritchie, Regional Head of Business Development for Royal Bank of Scotland, answering some taxing questions from our members on all things business and Ayrshire. Thought-provoking was the International Trade Breakfast at Seamill Hydro Hotel with keynote speaker Liam Smyth of the British Chambers International Trade Team. With so much uncertainty around Brexit Liam certainly provided some clarity around how businesses should be preparing for the potential effects of Brexit. The Business Awards Gala Dinner at Ayr Racecourse ended the week with a wonderful celebration of the great variety of businesses that we have in Ayrshire. I will never get tired of seeing the delight on the faces of each of the award winners as their hard work and business endeavours are recognised with their awards! The evening was a resounding success, only added to by
LORNA GIBSON ACCI PRESIDENT
Elaine C Smith who certainly kept us all amused and entertained! So we are now looking forward to 2019 with much to achieve! To further development of our new membership model as we strive to ensure that we are meeting the needs of all our members, whether SME, corporate or sole-trader, and from whichever of the diverse range of industries that we are fortunate to have in Ayrshire. I look forward to meeting you all at our many events and very much welcome any feedback you have on the Ayrshire Chamber, your membership or anything else. As you all know I like a chat!
brought the week to a spectacular close and all the winners can be found on pages 18 & 19. It was amazing to be able to present a cheque to Whiteleys Retreat, the nominated charity for the event. Ayrshires generosity knows no bounds it would seem. The Chamber staff are very proud of CEO Val Russell who has been appointed to the board of directors at the Scottish Chamber of Commerce. In addition, we were pleased to win the Scottish Business Women’s Award for Best Performing Team. At our AGM in September, it was great to be able to congratulate Anne Reid, Development Officer here at Ayrshire Chamber on her 20 years service, here’s to many more to come. Looking forward, with Christmas just around the corner you will find a full line up of upcoming
events on pages 6 & 7. Make sure you book your tickets or register your attendance via www.ayrshire-chamber.org/events

CELTIC CONNECTIONS Via European funding Ayrshire Chamber led a group of 22 businesses from all over Scotland on a learning journey to Ireland. The visit focussed on food, drink and tourism, the purpose being to share knowledge with similar businesses. Most of the group didn’t know each other so immediately new connections were being made. There was opportunity to network with members of South Dublin Chamber, meet with Letterkenny Chamber as well as local authority economic development officers and local politicians. Val Russell said: “The Sense of Ireland learning journey was an enlightening and stimulating experience in so many ways, and has reinforced my fundamental belief in the power of networks, however defined, to galvanise communities, grow a region’s food and drink economy, foster a positive food culture with pride in the value of local produce and put an area on the map as a food tourism destination.”
Key points: • Collaborate - working together can achieve so much more than working alone • Always be clear about the purpose and vision of a network and focus on that • Strong leadership is essential to motivate, inspire and ensure goals are met • Ride the storm when things get tough never give up • Be flexible/adaptable as circumstances change • Measure success as far as possible • Work with local and national agencies, link to their relevant strategies and seek advice/backing (funding etc) - but don’t be over-reliant on the public sector and be as self-sustaining as possible • Shout about & celebrate successes • Partner with other relevant sectors too heritage, textiles, crafts and others
Ayrshire has an equal quantity of local produce, attractions, history and stories yet Ireland appear to promote their areas much more successfully than we do. We have much to learn from our Irish neighbours and I look forward to continuing to engage with them in the future in order to develop Ayrshire.
NEW DIRECTORS We are pleased to introduce two new directors to the Ayrshire Chamber Board, Craig Johnstone of Giglets Education and Stephen McGhee of LMA Architects. Both bring with them a range of skills and knowledge that can only serve to enhance the current wealth of experience of our Board Members and we very much look forward to welcoming them into all things Chamber. Also, congratulations to Frank Gormanley of Forever Great on his appointment as Vice President. We look forward to a working with you all.

STAND UP FOR MENTAL HEALTH, REDUCE WORKPLACE STRESS
Kim has a compelling desire to encourage organisations to adopt a passionate approach to identifying and reducing stress in their workplace. Taking steps to reduce exposure to stress at work can be extremely beneficial in contributing to the ongoing battle against mental health.
Do you want to reduce staff turnover and absenteeism, increase morale, creativity and innovation, boost performance and productivity – all leading towards increased profits? • Workplace stress costs the UK economy £6 billion • 12.5 million working days lost due to stress • 24 working days lost on average per case • Around half of workplace absences can be linked to stress • Reduced performance at work due to stress costs twice that of absence • About a fifth of staff turnover related to stress at work By carrying out a Psychosocial Risk (PSR) Assessment (Stress Audit) you can acknowledge and understand the sources of stress within your organisation. A PSR Report will give you a precise account of how stress impacts your workforce, this will enable you to take positive steps to augment performance and efficiency whilst reducing risk exposure. Building on the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) framework, Kim will provide an accurate representation of your organisation. From the data collected through PSR Kim will generate comprehensive reports with proposed strategies to tackle any challenges highlighted. The analysis can be tailored to suit your organisation, specifically by team, department, branch or across your whole organisation. Looking after members of staff isn’t just the right thing to do, it also makes good business sense. If you would like a FREE consultation, please contact Kim Gallacher on 07597 388215 or email info@csm-scotland.com.

MOVEMENT AND MINDSET MOTIVATION FOR AYRSHIRE LEADERS
– Heather Gweneth Bird Consulting Ltd in Collaboration with Ayrshire College and Hansel for Exciting New Wellbeing Initiative A recent Harvard Health article confirmed what some have known for thousands of years. A regular yoga practise correlates with better sleep, less stress-related mental imbalances, better body awareness, weight loss AND even greater happiness! Alongside it’s stress busting effects, the practice also helps to boost compassion, gratitude and ‘flow states’; in a nut shell, it helps you feel great. Heather Gweneth Bird has been discussing this scientifically proven evidence with businesses across Ayrshire during the last few months and Ayrshire College and Hansel decided they would like to learn more! Heather spent 12 years studying the body/mind connection working within the Pharmaceutical Industry whilst managing diverse teams and undertaking further training in the science of Yoga and coaching methods designed to boost overall wellbeing. With 1 in 4 people in the UK experiencing symptoms of anxiety, depression and insomnia and other mental health concerns, it’s more important than ever that we look after our colleagues and do all we can to endorse healthy ways of living throughout our busy working lives. Heather will share the unique Movement and Mindset Motivation coaching programme with the teams to encourage overall wellbeing as well as increasing focus, concentration, confidence and a more compassionate and authentic way of being and working. By encouraging our Ayrshire teams to look after bodies and minds over a series of uplifting sessions: innate creativity and confidence is able to shine through, setting up the teams for a healthy/happy 2019! Ayrshire businesses are invited to an event on Friday 1 February 2019, from 8.30am to 12.30pm at Saltcoats Town Hall designed to support workplace inclusion and business performance that will benefit both employers and employees. This event is organised by Ayrshire DICE (Disability Inclusive = Confident Employers) and supported by North Ayrshire Council. Ayrshire DICE aims to help employers to be disability-confident by facilitating changes to policy and practice related to disability and health conditions to create a more positive business environment. Evidence shows that increasing workplace inclusion is not an empty slogan; it’s a good
• Exhibition of free support business decision. What Ayrshire DICE will be outlining will be good for business, good for the workforce and good for performance with real impact on the bottom line. The cost to the economy of workplace absence and people with disabilities and health issues dropping out of the labour market is estimated to run into billions. This represents the cumulative cost to businesses across the country. This event can be the first or further step in an ethical approach as well as being the smart thing to do. POSITIVITY LEADS TO WELLBEING Ayrshire based Positive Pulse Scotland Ltd has been working closely with many of the Ayrshire Chamber members delivering workplace health and wellbeing days for staff. Staff have a 20-minute consultation with a health professional addressing mental and physical health issues that they may be experiencing and helping them to be pro-active about their health. Some of the companies involved Microtech, William Duncan & Co, Brownings the Bakers and QTS. Here is a testimonial from QTS about our service. Monica at Positive Pulse Scotland has been a great addition to our health and well-being program here at QTS. She carried out health checks and oneto-one chats with staff here in the office and out on some of our sites. Monica spotted a few areas of concern, which led to our staff seeking further medical advice, preventing what may have become more serious issues. Monica’s willingness to travel to our sites meant that she could provide us a fantastic level of service. As a great communicator, she managed to strike up fantastic rapport with our staff and made them feel at ease about seeking medical and health advice. Moving forward we plan to introduce Monica and the team to our entire operations throughout the country. Thanks Again for a providing a wonderful service

Bike Smart was the message at the heart of this year’s Road Safety Week, focusing on the safety of those on two wheels. Taking place between 19 – 25 November and coordinated by Brake, Road Safety Week sought to raise public awareness over road safety, acting as the driver for positive change on our roads. The number of cyclists in the UK is increasing at a rapid pace; however, those on two wheels are among the most vulnerable UK road users. Employers can play a part in making sure all road users are kept safe by promoting improvement of health and wellbeing of drivers and active commuters within the workplace.

OVER THE WALL WANTS TO HELP AYRSHIRE'S SERIOUSLY ILL CHILDREN
Most of us can recount precious family memories from growing up but imagine you had been robbed of them because of a serious illness that affected you and as a consequence your entire family. This is more common than you may think. Seriously ill children can lose much of their childhood and bring significant pressure on family life. Issues such as parents being naturally over protective, losing out on engagement/development at school, sports, scouts, etc are commonplace and result in isolation, low confidence and self-esteem. To try and compensate in some way Over The Wall provides week long Therapeutic Recreation Camps for the seriously ill children, week long camps specifically for their siblings and weekend camps for families. All camps are free and run by our own staff with the support
of volunteers. Every single donation made in Scotland goes towards them. OTW is not just about donations, we have many ways companies can engage with us. We need approximately 700 volunteers to run our camps each year and company staff can be trained as volunteers. They find the experience motivating and extremely rewarding. We need volunteers to help set up our camps and we can make camp places available for corporate supporters kids and families. These are just a few examples.
Feedback from campers and families is extraordinary and highlights that we give memories and engagement they may never otherwise have had. Only 3% of campers in Scotland this year were from Ayrshire. It concerns John from OTW that children and families here are missing an opportunity of benefitting physically and mentally through a lack of awareness. Ayrshire is important to John and he would love to discuss with you how to take simple steps to rectify this. If you feel the same contact john.geates@otw.org.uk

We will be running another Institute of Leadership PARTN and Management (ILM) accredited course in 4 BUSIN ER Leadership and Management from January 2019. ESS This popular short course is aimed at managers and team leaders who have no formal management qualifications or less than five years’ experience in management. By looking at real life managerial scenarios and taking part in fun activities, you will learn to identify your own leadership style and build your confidence in leading a team. The course brings together managers from a range of different industry sectors, helping you all to share ideas and learn from each other’s experiences and mistakes. The course will help to instantly boost your performance as the skills you learn can be immediately applied the next days. Around 80% of the managers who started on the last ILM Award in Leadership and Management day release course have now indicated that they would like to advance on to the ILM Certificate in Leadership and Management course. Proving that our courses give managers the right tools to take back to their workplace. Some of the participants on the last course came from the likes of Booth Welsh, Egger, North Ayrshire Leisure, and NHS Ayrshire & Arran. We even had some of our own staff at Ayrshire College take part. Wendy McColl, Inclusive Learning Team Leader at our Ayr Campus, said of the course “My role means that I deal with a core team of Inclusive Learning Assistants and Officers in addition to a wider team encompassing Student Support Assistants and Learning Assistants. The ILM course has been very informative and has allowed me to understand the theoretical perspectives of successfully leading a team. Defining and clarifying leadership and management has been particularly helpful to me. Separating the two has allowed for a deeper understanding of my own role and my relationship with my team. “I have been able to understand aspects of motivation, styles of leadership, learning styles, problem solving and decision making by understanding and applying the relevant models and theories. The way the course is delivered is very interactive and really allows you to understand the meaning and concepts behind the models and approaches. “Working with others from local and international companies has allowed me to broaden my knowledge and understand more about their working styles, procedures and policies.” The ILM Award in Leadership and Management course takes place on a Tuesday afternoon or evening, whichever session you prefer, for around 14 weeks. You can sign up on the Ayrshire College website or contact wendy.mcfarland@ayrshire.ac.uk to discuss further.

TROON YACHT HAVEN CELEBRATES 40TH YEAR
One of the first marinas to be built on the Firth of Clyde has celebrated its 40th year, with one employee also celebrating his 40th year of employment at the popular Scottish haven. Now owned and operated by Yacht Havens Group, the original harbour basins in Troon were constructed in the 1800s by the Duke of Portland to be used for coal and timber shipping. The inner basin, where the marina now lies, was transformed into a marina in 1978 by a consortium led by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. Commenting on the development of Troon harbour into a leisure marina, Sir Robin said,“Yachting on the Clyde was developing. Kip Marina was already full and Rhu Marina was being planned. Troon was a sheltered basin and the rock surface was sufficiently low to allow the removal of mud to give sufficient depth for yachts.”
It was far more than just sailors who were benefiting from the marina. It was estimated that the marina had created 70 jobs in the local town in the 1980s due to the ripple effect of increased tourism, in addition to the 11 employed by the marina. Duke Darge was one of the first employees at the marina and he also celebrates his 40th anniversary as he continues to work there today now managing the boatyard operations. Having started as a young trainee, Duke now manages the 55 ton boat lift and storage ashore, while spending his spare time racing yachts, including One Tonners and Quarter Tonners, around the west coast of Scotland and across the UK.
Commenting on Duke’s landmark year, Marina Director Stephen Bennie said,“Troon Yacht Haven simply wouldn’t be what it is today without Duke’s incredible loyalty, knowledge and experience. He is well-known and highly respected across the Scottish sailing industry, not just because of his commitment to providing a first-class service to boaters here in Troon, but also his incredible yacht racing achievements.” Over the past two decades, the marina’s reputation has continued to grow with the popular haven now offering over 400 sheltered pontoon berths with full-tide access. The opening of Scotts Restaurant (by Buzzworks Holdings) in 2004 increased the attraction of Troon with 1000s of visitors arriving at the marina by sea and by road each year. Last year, the marina was voted Best UK Marina/Harbour 2017 in the Sailing Today awards.

WHERE WILL OUR FOOD COME FROM?
Robert Wallace, Branch Manager at NFU Mutual in Kilmarnock, said:
Leaving the EU presents the food industry with vulnerability to a variety of potential practical pitfalls when decisions are made regarding issues such as labour, subsidies, new legislation and so on, and solutions for where our food will come from are under scrutiny from industry and consumers. Our Food Fraud Report discovered that only one in ten people have confidence in a global supply chain. Post Brexit, if we are in the position where we are negotiating new trade deals outside the EU then the prospect of GM foods and chlorinated chicken from the US are examples of outcries that represent the high standards of UK consumers. It also found consumer confidence to be in decline, mostly due to high profile cases of fraudulent food in the media, such
as the horse meat scandal in 2013. In the research conducted in 2017 with over 2,000 consumers, one third (33%) said that they are less trusting of products and retailers than they were five years before. However, this presents opportunities. Our research also found that 99% of consumers would buy more British or local food if retailers made it easier for them. British food also has its advantages through a shorter and better regulated supply chain that may be more manageable. To learn more, contact the Kilmarnock Agency of NFU Mutual for a free copy of the Food Fraud Report, which contains research, industry viewpoints, and practical advice for food producers, retailers and hospitality businesses to improve consumer confidence. kilmarnock_agency@nfumutual.co.uk or call 01563 524 013.

The Ayrshire Business Awards 2018 on Friday 12th October was the ideal platform to announce the winners of the Ayrshire Apprenticeship Community Challenge 2018.
Now in its 15th year, the Ayrshire Apprenticeship Community Challenge asked companies who have 1 or more apprentices to come up with a project that would benefit their local community. Launched in February 2018, companies across Ayrshire were invited to put forward individuals or a team of apprentices to plan, complete and document their chosen project by September 2018. Apprentices were then invited to present their portfolios to a panel of judges

The 2 finalists, GE Caledonian and Spirit Aerosystems, were then invited to attend the Business Awards for the announcement of the overall winner. The 2 projects were as follows:
The judges highly commended all the apprentices who took part for their enthusiasm, clarity and the pride they showed in presenting first class teamwork. Making formal presentations was a new skill to many but the judges were impressed by the dedication and practice that both teams had so clearly put in.’ Judging Panel.
GE Caledonian- Designed and manufactured an Interactive STEM Playground at Annbank Primary School. Spirit Aerosystems- Designed Aviation theme STEM lesson plans to take into local schools. The judging panel were so impressed by both projects and presentations that they decided, for the first time, to announce both teams as joint winners: ‘Both GE Caledonian and Spirit AeroSystems presented projects of high quality and there was nothing in it for the judges to be able to say one company was better than the other. The only fair result was to award them both first equal. Well done to both teams and to the support they
Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce would like to congratulate both teams on winning the award. Thank you to Skills Development Scotland for their continued support and sponsorship of the Challenge and to Munro Architects and Ocean Blue Consulting for sitting on the judging panel. RESEARCH & EVALUATION PROJECT
The Energy Agency, in partnership with NHS (Ayrshire and Arran), is conducting an evaluation project to investigate the potential benefits of Solid Wall Insulation (SWI). This is in conjunction with South Ayrshire Council, East Ayrshire Council and Dumfries and Galloway as part of their area based insulation projects.
Evidence exists that current policy interventions may be associated with the improved health of participants and the aim of the study has been to investigate these links in more detail. The findings from the first and second year of the study have now been published and have demonstrated changes in proximal outcomes (e.g. improved housing conditions, increased indoor warmth/comfort, increased pride in the home and reduced fuel bills) which have known links to longer term health impacts. Alongside anecdotal reports of improvements to existing health conditions, such as COPD and asthma, and reports of improved
mood following insulation, pre- and post- health questionnaires have also indicated increases in both physical and mental health scores for those who also perceived their home to be much warmer following the insulation works. The study also examined hospital admissions in postcodes where wall insulation upgrades had taken place. Although it is difficult to establish a direct causal link between this type of intervention and health outcomes, preliminary analysis suggests lower hospital admission rates for respiratory and cardiovascular related conditions in these areas compared with a control group of postcodes who had not yet participated in the scheme. The study commenced in 2014 and has now

THE SPIRIT OF ARRAN
Introducing…Isle of Arran Gin!
Arran is an island of adventure and escape, rich in wild botanicals. This was the starting point for 4 guys with a shared passion for locally-sourced food and drink, including a local shopkeeper and an artisan baker. This‘punchy’, distinctive gin launched in February and now the group are seeking distribution, as sales grow from Arran-exclusively to Scotland and UK-wide (with exciting export plans). For now, the focus is on growing the business in Ayrshire, before anywhere else!
become an ongoing monitoring and evaluation project involving over 350 households to date. The aim is to conduct further data collection and statistical analysis with support from NHS Ayrshire & Arran (Public Health) as well as the University of Strathclyde and the University of Glasgow.
ISLAND BOTANICALS The‘big’flavours are Hogweed Seed (citrus & spice); Meadowsweet (floral/honey notes), Sea Lettuce (delicious, savoury seaweed) and Noble Fir (fresh pine). These Arran botanicals give the gin its bold, complex taste, which also manages to be smooth and balanced…perfect with a FeverTree Mediterranean tonic and slice of orange (or grapefruit and mint)!
Having recently purchased land in a scenic corner of Brodick, the challenge for 2019 will be the funding and building of a unique Visitor Experience / Micro-distillery, complete with Gin School, Café and outdoor spaces. With beautiful views over the Firth of Clyde towards the Ayrshire coast, an exciting vision is coming to life, which will bring jobs, visitor numbers and an all-weather, family experience. But, for now, the obsession is launching an online shop, and bringing Arran Gin to mainland Scotland - starting right here in Ayrshire. Cheers! This experience could not have been better and I couldn’t imagine doing my work experience anywhere else. Anne is a student at Largs Academy who recently spent some time with The Drama Box in Dundonald for her work experience placement. During Anne’s work placement she got to see so many different sides to the business, from their products (pupil workshops, teacher’s online courses etc.) to marketing (social media, colour scheme, fliers) and to the more corporate side of the business (phone numbers, emails, addresses). Anne said “I have learned a ton about how drama can help kids become so much more confident and social and how it can really prepare them for the world of work”.

Emma from Belmont Academy would love to pursue a career in veterinary medicine and she spent time at Vet4Pets in Ayr. She said: “For my work experience I went to Vets4Pets. The staff were all very welcoming and I learned a lot from them. During my time there, I was allowed to watch many operations in theatre and I learned how to properly x-ray animals. The best part of my work experience was watching the operations as I found them very interesting. My work experience has helped me decide that I am choosing the right career path.”

MASSIVE ACHIEVEMENT FOR PROJECT SEARCH GRADUATES

KINGCASE PUPILS ARE FLYING HIGH After introducing the NATS Academy last year with a series of lessons linked in with S3 Geography, the team, led by Andrea Kirkhope, developed a six-part module on the history of flight which was delivered to Primary 5 pupils at Kingcase and Alloway Primaries during September and October this year.
Every Thursday during the module, two NATS employees (who were also trained STEM Ambassadors) went into the schools and presented the lesson to the pupils, followed by an activity based on the lesson topic. The module covered the history of air travel, from Wilbur and Orville Wright’s first powered flight in 1903, right through to the modern day and the Airbus 380 Superjumbo. Alongside the rapidly-changing face of aircraft, the presenters described how air traffic control has had to change to keep up with growing demand, technological advances, and new ways of working to maintain safety in our skies.
The activities covered many aspects of the role of NATS, with games based on ‘Riding the Beam’ and identifying different cloud types, to how GPS can be used to triangulate an aircrafts’ position.
The project is a great example of how organisations and schools can work together to benefit their pupils and help encourage them to consider a career they may not have previously thought about. In addition NATS have a new team of STEM Ambassadors who have been going into schools across Ayrshire to speak with pupils about the work they do.

These changes were reflected in the wide variety of job roles represented by the speakers. Accompanying the Air Traffic Controllers, the pupils heard from Aircraft Position Operators, Flight Information Officers (FISOs), a People Capability Specialist, the Engineering Service Manager, an Air Traffic Management Development Expert, and a Systems Engineer! Each presenter spoke about their job roles, and how what they learned in school is used in their everyday role.
