There is no doubt that the Chamber’s Annual Dinner in March was another stunning success and thanks to everyone who contributed to breaking the 500 guests mark. The evening kicked off with a most impressive performance of movie theme music by Stewarton Academy, setting the up-lifting tone for more to come.

Congratulations again to our two Business Excellence Award Winners – Brownings the Bakers and Southbeach Holdings Scotland Ltd who showed what Ayrshire businesses are made of – ambitions, achievements and accolades. Throughout the evening, so many guests commented to me that there was a great buzz this year. This culminated in the awesome performance by Largs Academy LA Soul, taking us onto another high, even getting some guests dancing (no names mentioned!), and receiving a standing ovation. Roll on the 2015 Annual Dinner!

The future of Prestwick airport continues high in our sights. Val and I attended a meeting with Transport Scotland to both seek an update and to show our commitment to support the venture.

Colleagues at Transport Scotland re-iterated their appreciation of the local interest at the Business Forum event at the airport and the significant amount of ideas given to them. We were most encouraged to learn that the direction is on building the business, not selling off the business. We look forward to the Deputy First Minister’s announcement when she has considered the Business Plan in June. And of course, in the true spirit of the Chamber’s Buy Ayrshire initiative, the more we use the airport, the more chances we are giving its future success!

In the meantime, Ayrshire businesses are continuing to thrive – just take a look at the Chamber’s website News and Events page for the long list of good news stories for the latest updates, and the more in-depth stories in this magazine. Indeed, the number of new members joining the Chamber compared to those lapsing in April is 3:1, another healthy sign of our economic growth.

SCOTTISH AIRSHOW COMES HOME TO AYRSHIRE IN SEPTEMBER! pay a small amount to see a wide range aircraft in a static display at Glasgow Prestwick airport. Members of the public will be able to walk around and see up close some great aeroplanes.

After an absence of 22 years, the Scottish Airshow supported

by Ayrshire Chamber returns on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 September 2014.

Danny Anderson of Ayrshire-based Zisys Events has brought together local business and aviation professionals to return the airshow to the Ayrshire skies and host a weekend which is forecast to grow into one of Ayrshire’s leading events.

Danny said: “The objective is to stage a significant aviation event based in Ayrshire which explores the theme of flight, initially through an airshow and static aircraft display.

It is designed to bring tourism, business, economic and educational benefits to Ayrshire in particular and Scotland in general through our programme: • Friday 5 September - One day business conference with an aviation theme.

• Saturday 6 September - Free airshow and family fun day - all based on the Low Green Ayr.

• Sunday 7 September - A paid entry static display of aircraft and exhibition stands at Glasgow Prestwick airport.

• Education opportunities mixed through the weekend.

Media co-ordinator Doug Maclean said: “A small team of aviation professionals has worked tirelessly to bring this event back to the Ayrshire skies in a new and exciting format. The plan is to grow this event to make it an annual calendar highlight over the next 5 years. We want to encourage people to come to Ayrshire for the weekend and sample some of our great entertainment and hospitality.”

The highlights of the free Saturday air show are: • The Lancaster, Hurricane and Spitfire of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. They will be joined in a unique formation by a second Lancaster which will be flown in from Canada to join this historic memorial flight.

• The exciting Blades aerobatic teams flown by four ex RAF Red Arrows pilots.

• P arachutists landing on the Low Green.

• Helicopter display.

• The awe-inspiring Vulcan bomber.

The airshow and family fun day will be based on the Low Green Ayr. On the Sunday the public will be asked to

Bob Alexander, the Scottish Airshow sponsorship manager, said: “Economic conditions have been tough but we are offering a free Saturday airshow and family day through sponsorship. Significant donations have come from South Ayrshire Council, Event Scotland and Prestwickbased Woodward International. Ayr-based DKM Aviation is sponsoring the two-day appearance of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Texas-based Landmark Aviation has promised cash sponsorship and offered us facilities for hosting the media launch and pleasure flights during the airshow weekend. Many other companies are considering donating to this great family Ayrshire event. The more sponsorship received by the Scottish Airshow the better the show that we can put on.”

STEPHEN GOES NUCLEAR AS HE SPENDS HIS WEEK AT HUNTERSTON Stephen from Irvine Royal Academy spent his work experience with Magnox in the Hunterston A power station which is being decommissioned.

He said: “I thought my work experience week was good and I learned a lot about the different types of engineering documentation, civil systems and manufacturing. I also learned about reactors and the intermediate level waste store and the storage and cleaning process of different wastes. I was also told about safety aspects like Fire Risk Assessments and the procedures in the event of a fire as well as working at height and the safety of using different tools.

“I attended various meetings this week but unfortunately I was not allowed entry into the radiation control area because of my age.

I would like to come back and see all the facilities I learned about from the engineers responsible for them.”

UWS KEY PLAYER IN ‘HONEYCOMB - CREATIVE WORKS’

NEW £3.5M SUPPORT PROGRAMME FOR THE CREATIVE INDUSTRIES LAUNCHED University of the West of Scotland (UWS) is a key Scottish partner in a new skills and business support programme by Creative Skillset targeted at digital content creators across the western seaboard of Scotland, most of Northern Ireland, and the six border counties of the Republic of Ireland. The University’s participation in this programme was officially launched at an event at Ayr Campus on 1 May 2014.

Creative Skillset is the Scottish lead partner for ‘Honeycomb – Creative Works’, a cross-border and cross-regional support programme aimed at maximising the economic potential of the burgeoning creative industries sector.

The programme is supported by the EU’s INTERREG IVA Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) and will be delivered in partnership with the University of Ulster and Dundalk Institute of Technology. Creative Skillset’s Scottish partners include Creative Scotland, MG Alba, Screen Hi, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, and UWS.

The partner organisations have identified a range of activities which will be delivered over the next year across the eligible area.

These are grouped around four specific themes which are Research, Networking, Skills Development and Seed Funding.

Professor Nick Higgins, Professor in Media Practice and Director of University of the West of Scotland’s Creative Media Academy, said: “There are an incredible amount of talented freelancers and small businesses that operate outside of Scotland’s main cities and the difficulty they often face is having access to the best training and skills development. With the financial support of the Honeycomb Creative Works project, UWS’s Creative Media Academy has designed a series of activities including; digital filmmaking and screenwriting workshops, creative business enterprise CPD programmes, and modules for online and interactive content creation, that will enable local industry practitioners to fully embrace the opportunities that digital technology offers.”

Alasdair Smith, Creative Skillset Scotland Director, stated that Creative Skillset already

plays a pivotal role in developing creative talent throughout Scotland, adding: “The Honeycomb – Creative Works programme will deliver skills and networking opportunities to companies and practitioners in the digital content sector, thereby increasing competitiveness and stimulating growth.”

He explained that in addition to networking and skills, research and seed funding would also help eligible companies become more competitive in the global marketplace.

He added: “Honeycomb beneficiaries aren’t based in Glasgow or Edinburgh; they’re based up and down the west coast from Campbeltown to Kirkcudbright, from Portree to Troon. So if your business is active in the digital content sector, and you’re based along the western seaboard of Scotland, then Honeycomb wants to hear from you.”

Getting on the right path to employment AYRSHIRE Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Youth Academy supports school leavers seeking to find employment by helping them identify and recognise the skills they have in order to achieve employment.

The Employer-led programme gives young people the chance to brush up on their employability skills to make them more appealing to employers when they apply for jobs.

The recent workshop held in North Ayrshire gave those who took part an opportunity to work on teambuilding, CV writing, application form writing, interview skills, social media and skills identification in an attempt to sell themselves better to employers to increase their chances of getting a job.

And it is a scheme that is providing results with five of the participants finding work thanks to the help and experience they gained.

One of the businesses involved was Sainsbury’s Irvine and they were so impressed with those taking part that they have offered a job to one of the girls. Store Manager Lynne Nimmo and HR manager Carol Spence said: “We were delighted to be involved in this project working the Chamber Youth Academy and local community. The young people taking part were all very impressive and we feel a sense of pride in watching the development of these young people and their output.

“The quality of the young people involved was excellent which was why we decided to offer one of the girls a job with us at Sainsbury’s in Irvine as we had an opening within our store and her performance merited the chance.”

Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry Business Liaison Co-ordinator, Claire Baird, explained: “The uniqueness of this programme is that it helps us lever in the skills and knowledge of Ayrshire’s business people to enhance the employability and life chances of young people. We have come to recognise that a programme such as this is not only about equipping young people with the support that they require but is also about demonstrating to businesses what they can get from harnessing the skills and talents of young people.

“We’re delighted that our latest event has seen five girls find work as a result of the help support that local employers were able to provide.”

New logo for local cancer support group Local charity Ayrshire Cancer Support is pleased to unveil their new logo and website which reinforces ACS’s commitment to provide the very best service to those affected by cancer throughout Ayrshire.

Two Ayrshire companies were chosen to work with the charity in the design of the new identity. Prestwick design and branding agency ‘atom’was given the task of producing the organisation’s new logo and branding and Ayr based ‘Essence Creative Solutions’ which has worked closely with the charity for many years was chosen to re-build and launch the new website (www.ayrshirecs.org).

ACS has operated in Ayrshire since 1982 providing emotional support and practical help to those affected by cancer; the charity’s aim is to improve the quality of life of those living with cancer and ensure that help is readily available throughout Ayrshire for those who need it.

Their ‘Hospital Transport’ service ensures

that patients are taken from their homes to Glasgow hospitals for treatment by volunteer drivers, who use their own cars to provide transport. During the year 2012/13 ACS’s drivers completed 10,319 patient journeys covering 203,281 miles.

The charity operates Support Centres in Ayr and Kilmarnock which were opened in 1997 where, in a caring and supportive environment, they offer a wide range of services, including counselling, support groups and complementary therapies.

The charity does not receive any funding to help with its work and relies on the revenue from its 11 charity shops and the kindness and support of the people and businesses in Ayrshire, John Beck, Chief Executive of Ayrshire Cancer Support said ‘We are delighted with our new website and logo and the fact that 2 local Ayrshire companies carried out the work. It is important that Ayrshire Cancer Support retains its established core values and services but at the same time develops a recognizable modern identity’.

HANSEL SEEKS ENTERPRISING MINDS IN THE COMMUNITY Enterprising Minds is an exciting project which Hansel are leading, in partnership with North Ayrshire Council, Ayrshire and Arran NHS with specialist input from Community Catalyst. The project will support people with learning disabilities, and people with autism or Asperger’s to become entrepreneurs and explore creative options for support through enterprising activities at the heart of their community.

We are looking for individuals, businesses and business support agencies in North Ayrshire who have the skills and connections to become community members of the project. We will support community members to make a personal connection with an innovator and help them own their ideas, plan their enterprise, find funding and market their offer. Some community members might be able to offer tangible things like use of equipment or a space to meet. Community members

might be well placed to broker.

Prestwick Civic Pride brand Launched

Launch is delighted to have been hired to design and finalise the restwick Civic Pride brand.

The consumer brand for Prestwick Civic Pride is targeted towards a younger market and will be instantly recognisable around the town. Its primary focus will be to invoke community spirit and instil a pride among the town’s residents and visitors.

The Prestwick Civic Pride group will collaborate with others to encourage and assist with the council-backed initiatives

which include; keeping Prestwick well maintained and ensuring the area is clean and tidy at all times. They will actively promote the brand to generate awareness of local projects and events for the benefit of the town and its future.

Launch is a new creative agency based at 1 Wellington Square in Ayr where individuals with proven creative and marketing talent have been brought together from different agencies to specialise in all things Digital.

Kerr & Smith open their new commercial vehicle centre in Ayr Over 400 guests attended the opening of Kerr & Smith’s brand new commercial vehicle centre in Ayr earlier this year, which has also created 10 new jobs for the local economy.

The new site allows the business to provide an MOT service for large goods vehicles, which had previously been carried out by Government station but this is being phased out over the next 18 months.

Kerr & Smith officially opened their new centre on Thursday 20th February and were joined by customers - existing and new -, associates, partners, colleagues and friends for the official launch event and tour of the new site which was combined with a day of entertainment at Ayr Racecourse.

the launch of the premises, 10 new jobs have been created - with the team at Kerr & Smith expecting to eventually employ between 30 to 40 people on site.

Since 1998, the family run business has been successfully running its Commercial Vehicle Centre in Ayr from a temporary site but Chairman, Jim Smith and his business partner, Bill Kerr, wanted to invest in a permanent, state of the art premises to secure the future of the business. The Cumnock, Glasgow and Ayr sites are now run by Jim and Bill’s sons, Chester Smith, William Smith and Paul Kerr and Head Office is managed by Group Financial Director Donna McClure.

The new premises are part of their succession plan to future proof the business for the next generation and to demonstrate their commitment to the local economy.

Six Ayrshire Secondary Schools Compete for Company Awards A game developed, produced and marketed by a team of school pupils swept the board at last week’s Ayrshire finals of the Young Enterprise Scotland company awards.

Companies set up, financed and operated by teams from Irvine’s Greenwood Academy, Kilmarnock’s Grange Academy and James Hamilton Academy, Saltcoats’ St Matthew’s Academy, Ayr’s Belmont Academy and Dalmellington’s Doon Academy all competed in the prestigious finals, contesting 14 awards plus the overall title of Ayrshire Company of the Year.

‘Focus’ from Doon Academy was the night’s biggest winner, with their Monsieur Soleil board game earning the team the overall company award as well as trophies for Best Presentation, Best Report, Best Innovation and Best Product/Service. The team of Kirsty McCormick, Ashley Mitchell, Fiona Kennedy, Katie Graham, Naomi Allan, Halle Fitzsimmons and Paige McMahon were also runners up in the Best Interview Category, with Doon Academy’s Tracy Allen also recognised as Link Teacher of the Year.

Focus, and their board game which they designed to support language learning, will now go on to represent Ayrshire in the Young Enterprise Scottish finals in June.

Managing Director, Kirsty McCormick, said: “It feels amazing to win, especially as this is the first time our school has competed in the Ayrshire finals. We have all worked so hard throughout the year, and winning tonight give us so much confidence to develop Monsieur Soleil. A new home to mark their 25th year Booth Welsh celebrates their 25 years with the announcement of a planned move to larger Head Office premises later this year.

Over the last 25 years the company has grown from 2 to 200 employees and built a reputation for providing high quality control engineering solutions for blue chip clients across a wide range of industries.

This proposed move will provide the foundations for the company’s ambitious growth strategy going forward and help attract new clients and employees.

Martin Welsh, Managing Director, commented: “Stevenston was a great place to begin and grow the business.

However, by developing more in the direction of engineering services, any

growth directly impacts on desk space therefore our growth plans require new premises. As such we propose to move to Irvine’s Bay’s Enterprise Area for Life Sciences, continuing our commitment to North Ayrshire whilst moving to an area where we are among our clients and other businesses in similar and complementary fields.

“Currently Booth Welsh employs around 200 people including apprentices and graduates and the proposed new location gives the company twice the space they have currently. With 40,000 square feet to fill, more resources will be required in every area of the business from fully experienced engineers, back office support, graduates and apprentices, bringing future jobs to the people of North Ayrshire and beyond.”

The business plans to move to their new location later this year in August.

Project SEARCH Project SEARCH is a programme to help young people with learning disabilities find and keep a job. It was first set up in Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in Ohio, USA as a result of a need to recruit staff for relatively routine, but complex jobs, which had a high staff turnover.

It is a partnership that brings together relevant organisations and, in East Ayrshire, is led by three partners: East Ayrshire Council, NHS Ayrshire & Arran and Ayrshire College. A number of other partners also contribute to the delivery of the East Ayrshire programme at University Hospital, Crosshouse including Skills Development Scotland, The Scottish Consortium for Learning Disability, The Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry, CVO East Ayrshire and Business in the Community. Ten interns began the programme in September 2013 and attend 5 days a week between 9am and 4pm.

A typical day for a Project Search intern begins with an employability skills class.

After interns sign in, they undertake lessons based on daily living/employability skills, i.e., problem solving, team work, decision making, budgeting, nutrition, CV writing-instruction. The class follows an approved Project SEARCH Curriculum and in East Ayrshire all interns are being accredited for their work to SCQF Level 3.

From 1000 -12.30, students participate in non-paid work placements throughout University Hospital, Crosshouse.

They rotate through three internships throughout their year on the programme.

At lunchtime, interns are encouraged to

eat with their co-workers before returning for their afternoon work rotations. The busy day finishes with a second classroom input before the end of the working day at 4pm.

The internships are typically 10 – 12 weeks long and are planned to meet the needs of the business and the students.

The internships are designed to teach marketable, competitive, transferable skills.

Employers should also be aware that these young people are all eligible for a range of recruitment incentives which employers of all sizes can access. Our interns may also qualify for ‘Access to Work’ which offers practical support and can pay for a range of help including adaptations to equipment, travel expenses or even disability awareness training for work colleagues.

As well as a meaningful workplace experience and a range of transferable skills, East Ayrshire’s Project Search interns have shown over the last nine months how much they offer potential employers.

Feedback from hospital managers across the range of departments has been hugely positive with all complimenting the young people on their records of near perfect attendance, excellent timekeeping and the positive commitment they’ve shown to both individual departments and the jobs themselves.

From day one, Project Search focuses on jobs and routes to employment and, as young people now approach the end of their year on the programme, we are certain that the experience and practical skills they have gained will make them valued employees for any business seeking to expand their workforce.

The company, part of Entrepreneurial Spark in Ayrshire is always interested in working within the community to give back and was delighted to welcome Jessica from Prestwick Academy to our office as part of her work experience.

Jessica was a fantastic addition to the team for the week that she did her work experience which consisted of social media work, goody bag preparation, data entry and blogging.

After working with I Do Licious, Jessica (pictured here) was referred to another E Spark business, Must Dust, and we hear she has started part time.

Aaron from S4 at Doon Academy was delighted to be given the opportunity to attend Stagecoach Bus Depot in the Sandgate in Ayr. He was based in the office in a clerical role and learned how to operate the computer system. Aaron was also shown the complex workings of a busy bus depot and what happens behind the scenes in organising and timetabling drivers, buses and routes throughout Ayrshire and beyond. Staff at the depot were delighted with his level of application and commitment and indicated that he would be an ideal candidate for a modern apprenticeship at the station.

Business Mentoring Did you know the Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry offers a business mentoring service? The service is free of charge for 12 months and offers those taking part the chance to learn, network, a fresh pair of eyes to look at future plans and current operations and utilise the experience of mentors.

Business Mentoring is a joint initiative between Scottish Chambers of Commerce and Scottish Enterprise and is a free service which connects businesses with experienced business mentors. The service is open to both Chamber members and non-members.

VG ENERGY and RSPB join forces to reduce carbon emmissions Galston based renewable technology specialists VG Energy, along with Kingspan Wind and legal firm Turcan Connell, has gifted the RSPB a domestic wind turbine in an effort to help reduce the climate change emissions of the organisation.

The 15-metre high KW6 turbine, which has a capacity of 6kW, has been installed at RSPB’s Loch Leven nature reserve near Kinross and it will help save energy needs at the popular reserve.

Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2014 off to a flying start in Ayrshire Scottish Apprenticeship Week got off to a flying start when four Ayrshire College second-year aircraft engineering apprentices employed at Prestwick Aircraft Maintenance Ltd were announced as winners in the Young Innovators Challenge 2014. They were the only apprentices on the winners’ list which included nine universities.

The Young Innovators Challenge invited Scotland’s students to develop innovative proposals to address problems related to healthcare and wellbeing, green and sustainable energy resources, or smarter communities and infrastructure. Ayrshire Apprentices Martin Gemmell, Christopher Leitch, Conor MacKellar and Ross Wallace designed their innovation using skills they have developed as apprentices.

Ayrshire College brings employers and education together to make sure that the skills young people leave college with are those that industry needs. The College works with companies to develop their

workforce through apprenticeships and, this year it will support up to 900 modern apprentices to continue or start their training with employers in sectors like engineering, hospitality, construction, care, hairdressing and motor vehicle maintenance.

These are exciting times at Ayrshire College. A wide range of full-time courses is available from August, including new courses introduced in response to demand from local employers. New facilities mean that students study industry relevant courses using industry standard resources in environments that mirror the relevant industry sector. In April, Ayrshire College was approved by the National Skills Academy for Process Industries and the Composites Skills Alliance as the first training provider in Scotland to deliver composites training for the aeronautical, renewables and automotive industries.

by Galston duo, Matthew Dodds and Bill Strachan, who built up a successful communications company, UA Comms Ltd. in Kilmarnock in the 70’s. After a takeover by a national company, Matthew & Bill focused their energy and business skills in creating a portfolio of business premises throughout the Kilmarnock area.

Eureka Solutions Goes International

International recognition of Eureka Solutions, the award-winning provider of business systems, has taken a step further as they will be showcasing their new products at the prestigious SuiteWorld 2014 conference as an Exhibitor Sponsor in the US this spring.

David and the Eureka team will be exhibiting two new products. First is the NetSuite Warranty, Service and Repairs module which is aimed at servicing companies

with engineers who work on customer sites. It will allow them to track stock items against warranties and contracts and then track repairs against the assets.

They will also be able to log all parts used and the time taken on individual jobs. The second product is Data Exchange, a data integration tool, which allows NetSuite to integrate with e-commerce websites and third party products installed on the client’s system.

David said: “NetSuite has been impressed with the way Eureka hit the ground running in creating new add ons on their platform.

In less than a year of SDN membership, we have developed two NetSuite products.

Exhibiting will give us a greater chance to understand what customers are really looking for and allow us to build on our products.”

One small step to get ready for the world of work The Certificate of Work Readiness is designed with one aim - to help young people entering the world of work.

It was developed in conjunction with employers who reported that young people often lack the basic skills when entering into employment.

South Ayrshire Council’s Skills Towards Employment Project (STEP) is currently delivering the qualification as part of their Employability Fund programme which consists of in-house training before going into a work placement to help the young person understand the expectations of the employer. The main focus of the award is the feedback from the employer to help identify the young person’s strengths and what needs improved upon in relation to work.

Shannon Holligan, who recently completed the Certificate of Work Readiness said: “I went into a work placement in a care home and I set myself

personal development targets to help me become more confident dealing with people with communication difficulties.

It was good getting feedback from my employer I could learn from. I’ve started a Modern Apprenticeship and am working towards my SVQ in Health & Social Care.”

Employers are needed to support young people achieve this qualification by offering a quality work experience with no commitment of a permanent post, however, it can provide an extended work trial to establish the suitability of someone.

It allows employers opportunities for staff development mentoring a young person on work experience.

Working with local employers can help equip young people with the skills required for the local labour market. Events Round up Summer 2014 Airports were high on the agenda back in February... Firstly, members were invited to an Open Business Forum in the Aviator Suite at Prestwick Airport, over 100 delegates gathered to present their views and suggestions for the way forward.

Representatives from Transport Scotland, Prestwick Airport and South Ayrshire Council presented to the audience providing an update on the consultation currently being carried out by Transport Scotland.

The session finished with an inspiring Q & A session facilitating some good debate for the future of our airport!

Also in February and in conjunction with BCC, our members attended a breakfast seminar at the Gailes Hotel, The British Chambers of Commerce in association with Heathrow Airport organised a national programme for chamber members throughout the country, to hear the business opinion on the aviation capacity debate.
