Founder Joanne Robinson started the business after realising that there wasn’t anywhere for children to learn how to draw and paint. “If you have a child who is interested in sport, music, drama or dance then there are so many places for them to develop their skills,” comments Joanne. “However, I couldn’t find structured art courses anywhere.”
The Future’s bright for The Little Art School
The whole ethos of The Little Art School is founded on the belief that anyone can learn to draw and paint. “There’s a widely held myth that the ability to draw and paint is something that you are born with,” continues Joanne. “I feel so strongly that ANYONE can learn to draw and paint, it’s like learning to drive a car; it might come more naturally to some people but if you are taught well and practise then you can very quickly develop a life enhancing skill”. The Little Art School’s first adult evening classes started in
The green shoots of recovery in Ayrshire’s creative sector are well and truly sprouting! In the last twelve months The Little Art School Company has rapidly grown from an art lesson around a dining room table, to teaching over 200 keen artists in its two schools in Ayr and Troon and employs 15 part time staff.
May and, like the children’s classes, have been a huge success. “We have a very strong team at The Little Art School: myself, Melissa Haddow and Claire Dunn working with our talented team of art teachers. All our teachers follow the principle that talent is nothing without confidence. Whether you’re 4 or 94 every one of our classes boosts self-esteem,” concluded Joanne. “We are all proud of how far we have come so quickly and we have our eyes fixed on a future where there are Little Art Schools from Inverness down to St Ives!”

Ayrshire Smiles all round as 5-Star Visitor Attraction gets 100% There are big smiles all round at Hunterston B power station visitor centre after its entire team of guides received their certificates for passing the Ayrshire Smiles service excellence training course – the first business with 100% of its customer-facing staff to complete Ayrshire Smiles. The team of tour guides show visitors around EDF Energy’s Hunterston B power station and explain the fascinating workings of the station. Welcoming people from the local area and much further afield on a daily basis to the visitor centre, which has a 5-Star rating by VisitScotland, the guides decided to rise to the challenge of enhancing their already excellent customer services skills. Ayrshire Smiles mixes customer service training with destination knowledge and is designed to inspire people employed within tourism and hospitality-related businesses to share their passion for Ayrshire and give a genuine warm welcome to visitors. It builds on tried and tested destination and service delivery courses and helps create a consistent and quality approach to customer service. 4

Speaking about the training, Valerie Poyser, Hunterston B power station visitor centre co-ordinator said: “All our guides found the training really very worthwhile to do and it only took just over a couple of hours to complete online. We were tested on our knowledge of other attractions in the local area and on the best way to deal with customers. I would recommend the training to other Ayrshire organisations as it really is a very useful tool.” Moira Birtwistle, member of the Ayrshire & Arran Tourism Leadership Group said: “We are delighted to have been involved in the development of the Ayrshire Smiles programme, which empowers businesses to enhance the quality and delivery of excellent service to their visitors. “The warmth of welcome and customer care through excellent product knowledge are among the most important factors influencing how an
area is perceived. By exceeding expectations, the area can benefit from visitors returning and also sharing their enjoyment of all that Ayrshire and Arran has to offer.” Ayrshire Smiles online training is available free of charge. Individuals can register and businesses can find out more about using the course as part of their staff training at www.ayrshire-smiles.com. The initiative was developed by Ayrshire & Arran Tourism Team with a wide variety of industry partners. The initiative supports the aims and ambitions of the Ayrshire & Arran Tourism Strategy 2012-2017 and recognises the importance that the people of Ayrshire & Arran and the service they deliver make to the overall visitor experience.
Survey finds Scots Businesses reap benefits of International markets ONE in three Scottish Businesses currently export with over half seeing a positive impact in profitability within 12 months of expanding into international markets. The survey carried out by the Scottish Chambers of Commerce indicated that businesses have benefited quickly from going global, with 54% seeing a positive impact in terms of increased profitability within just twelve months of expanding into international markets and 56% experiencing an increase in sales. The study also found the 81% of those businesses currently exporting have done so for five years or more and the majority of these businesses are experiencing a positive impact. Liz Cameron, Chief Executive, Scottish Chambers of Commerce, believed the results highlights the hard work of Scottish Businesses and shows the nation’s economy in a positive light. She said: “The hard work of Scottish businesses is shining through as Scotland’s economy gives us positive signals; orders are increasing, employment is on the up and overall, businesses are more optimistic about the future of their business. “We know that Scotland’s innovation and people are its strength so we must keep our finger on the pulse, making sure we tackle the barriers preventing us from doing business outside of Scotland. This survey has shown us that Scottish businesses are facing substantial challenges when looking to export to international markets.
reliant on Scotland’s home market. In order to sustain growth and create new opportunities, we have to be outward-looking but it’s clear that we are not doing enough to create a sense of confidence amongst the business community to export internationally. “Scotland’s business community need to be better informed that global markets want to buy the products and services we have to offer, particularly as a majority of businesses who responded (65%) felt they did not have the right products/services to offer international customers. This is not just a Scottish issue; businesses across the UK are experiencing similar barriers to exporting. “If we are serious about stimulating growth and seizing international opportunities for the Scottish economy, we must tackle these barriers head-on. We need Scottish and UK Governments to support private sector led initiatives which will drive businesses to think global. Already, the numbers of businesses who are exporting outside of the UK have increased as a direct result of Scottish Chambers of Commerce’s Business Mentoring Scotland programme. It is time to gather pace and recognise the pivotal role of Chambers of Commerce in creating an Exporting Scotland.” More locally, the Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce will be hosting two International Trade events before the end of the year following on from the success of one hosted at Begg Scotland in July. The event helped provide valuable information for those looking to branch out into International markets. Ayrshire Chamber CEO Val Russell said: “Exporting is good for Ayrshire and we have some highly successful business all willing to share their knowledge and expertise. We are happy to facilitate meetings between those who have been there, done that and can advise of pitfalls etc. to make the overseas journey less painful for new exporters” Two further International Trade events will be held on Tuesday 7th and on Thursday 16th October as part of Business Week October. More details to follow.

How technology can improve the health of your workforce
Paul Shires, Executive Director at BCC health cash plan provider Westfield Health, said: “We pre-empted this trend with the enhancement of our DoctorLineTM service in 2012. The telephone consultation line was extended to include a webcam facility, so now employees can talk to a qualified UK GP face to face, from the comfort of their own home or place of work and at a time that’s convenient for them.
“Our online Personal Health Risk Assessment enables employees to build a clear picture of their current health status, identify their personal health risks and get the help and advice they need to minimise the risks and improve their lifestyle.

It also reduces workforce injuries and accidents by 25 per cent.

Is your business open to the public? Would you like to show your support to breastfeeding mums? If so, then now is the time to sign up to NHS Ayrshire & Arran’s Breastfeed Happily Here Scheme. The Breastfeeding etc. (Scotland) Act makes it illegal to stop a mum feeding her child, either by breastfeeding or bottle feeding, in a place where she is allowed to be. Next year is the tenth anniversary of the Act and we want as many businesses as possible to have the opportunity to get involved in helping us to promote breastfeeding. Breastfeeding gives babies the best possible start in life and this scheme will work towards reducing the stigma attached to breastfeeding in public places.
• Breastfeeding mums will be able to identify that you are part of the scheme and will feel comfortable using your premises • All organisations that join the scheme will be added to our lists which will be available to help mums know that they will be welcomed and supported. All businesses that are open to the public are encouraged to take part in the scheme, everywhere from hairdressers to supermarkets. We ask them to make their staff aware of their responsibilities under the legislation and to display a window sticker so they are instantly recognisable as taking part in the scheme.

Marion added: “Some people may think that we’re barking mad moving to bigger premises during these difficult times for the high street, but we like to think that we’re taking the lead in making Troon a great destination for discerning shoppers.”
Woofin’ good news from The Pooch Pantry, the Troon-based business, who, after two years trading in Portland Street, have now moved to a bigger premises in the town’s Ayr Street. Marion McLean, owner of The Pooch Pantry, commented: “The customer reaction in the first few weeks there has been brilliant - they love the look of the shop and the new range of cat and dog accessories, premium pet food and healthy treats. “We’ve also expanded our range of pet themed gifts, cards and wrapping paper, so there’s something for everyone.” There’s more room to browse (with or without the dog), a special dog water fountain and a table where customers can enjoy a coffee or cold drink. Largs Yacht Haven celebrates 30 years
Back in 1983 three local businessmen, Dirk Kuyt, Howard Smallwood and Dave Clark, set about gaining planning permission to develop a new marina on the beach at Largs, Firth of Clyde. There was much doubt and scepticism about this greenfield site from Clyde yachtsmen and the local people. With the financial backing of Yacht Havens Group, based in Lymington, Hampshire, the breakwaters were constructed and dredging commenced to create a deep water basin to accommodate yachts at all states of tide. The first yacht sailed in 1984 to very simple facilities and over the course of the last 30 years the marina has grown from its embryonic stages to become Scotland’s first 5 gold anchor marina supporting 730 berths, over 120 full time jobs, 17 business premises and a 250 space boatyard with two travel hoists. In addition Largs Sailing Club relocated from Largs town to a purpose built clubhouse and event centre in 1999 and has since attracted many world and international sailing championships to Largs, creating a huge economic boost to the local area. The latest business to join the Yacht Haven is the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, supporting children, recovering from cancer, through sailing. The Trust’s programme has expanded into Scotland in 2014 from Cowes, Isle of Wight. All forms of watersports can be enjoyed at the Yacht Haven from yacht charter, motor boating, tuition, diving, fishing, sea kayaking and more recently the Coastal Rowing Club bringing many new participants from the local community to 12

enjoy the fabulous playground that is the Firth of Clyde. For the land visitor facilities have been included from inception for public car parking, coastal walks and BBQ areas. The Yacht Haven is an ideal 20 minute walk from the town centre and is also adjacent to Kelburn Castle and Country Centre, home to the Earl of Glasgow and open to the public for walks, recreation and summer music festivals. “Our first 30 years have been exciting and challenging, creating a vibrant and successful business from a sandy beach. The marina has been developed into much more than just a boat park, we have created a marine destination and
have always encouraged members of the public to enjoy our facilities. We are based in a fabulous location in very sheltered scenic waters and only 40 minutes from the airport and Glasgow,” enthused Yacht Haven director Carolyn Elder, who has worked at the marina since 1987. “We still have plans for continuous development and improvements as the needs and lifestyles of yachtsmen change. Our berth holders have been extremely loyal and supportive of all that we have done and have helped us through the early years.” Largs Yacht Haven is part of Yacht Havens Group who own and operate 2500 berths on 10 sites around the UK and Holland.
becoming self-employed, William has built up an impressive portfolio of Ayrshire clients which include (to name but a few), Costley and Costley Hotels, Turnberry Luxury Collection Resort, The Arran Distillery, Braehead Foods, Wellington School, Mansfield Care and of course Boswell’s Coach House. William also has many clients across Central Scotland, Glasgow, Edinburgh and The Borders. Since moving to Auchinleck 35 years ago, Aly had a dream of restoring the Coach houses which were built at the same time as Auchinleck House in 1760. This would make the Estate a place where people could come and enjoy the beautiful countryside, look at the historical places of interest and then come and enjoy eating and shopping in the spacious Coach House. There is a spectacular tree house for children to play in, built by her son Rory, who has also built a footpath running along the Lugar Gorge which is a beautiful walk and more walks are in the pipe line. When Chamber member Aly Boswell was looking for some fire safety advice for her new venture, Boswell’s Coach House, she spotted William Murdoch’s details in the Chamber magazine and as they say “the rest is history”. Both members met and William was able to put into place a full fire safety package for Aly

The new office will officially be opened on Wednesday 10th Commerce and Industry AGM.
The Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce has moved from its old home hidden above the check in desk at Glasgow Prestwick Airport and moved along the corridor to take pride of place in the Terminal building’s Mezzanine. The new office space is located next to the Aviator Suite making the team far more visible in a brighter and spacious office. worth it. A special thanks to our members who played a big part in the move, they hard work and support throughout the entire project was excellent and we can’t thank them enough. The office is looking fantastic and their hard work has given us the great space to allow us to provide the services we offer.” The Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s objective is to promote and facilitate business between our members and others, and so encouraging commercial growth and local prosperity. Get2Grips with Grants Ltd have the Edge Largs based business, Get2Grips with Grants Ltd, used to securing thousands of pounds of funding for others (notfor-profit organisations), won £40,000 for themselves at the recent Scottish Enterprise’s Dragon’s Den style Scottish EDGE Fund Award. The judges were clearly impressed by their recent growth, the potential for further growth and their ability to deliver. Louise McCarron, Managing Director of Get2Grips with Grants Ltd, whose team of six source and secure grant funding for the third Sector, impressed the judges with their commitment, achievement, ambition, drive and honesty – detailing how they had learned so much from a very hard year last year to their current strength where their Risk Register is their “Best Friend!” Managing Director, Louise McCarron, confirmed the winnings would be used to employ two more Grant Officers: “So we can help even more charities and community groups get the funding they need to save or develop their services. “Everyone needs funding and, believe it or not, some of the funders haven’t been able to disperse all their money because they’re ‘not getting enough quality applications” That’s where Get2Grips with Grants Ltd step in – using their years of experience and expert knowledge they match their clients’ needs to the best potential

funding sources and complete the grant applications for them. Though now supporting clients throughout the UK & Ireland the majority are still from Ayrshire, each one is encouraged to think big. Louise added: “It’s not just about what an organisation needs but what they’d love. Additional funding allows our clients to dream once again. One client on hearing her funding application was successful shouted ‘Yes! I’ve wanted to do this since University!’” This young business has thrived with the support of North Ayrshire Council Community Development Team, Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce, Ayrshire Association of Business Women, Women in Enterprise, Business Gateway, Entrepreneurial Spark, RBS & great mentoring. A final word from Louise: “Ayrshire is a fantastic place to set up and run a business. Avail of the support on offer and always, always strive to exceed your clients expectations. To learn more about the service Get2Grips with Grants Ltd provides check out their website www.get2grips. org or phone Louise on 0759 0010013. Be ready to be asked “What would you love for your organisation.” The Mossblown-based company’s fridge trailer has been helping keep food and drinks cool at major events such as T in the Park, The Wickerman Festival, Howling Fling Festival and the Commonwealth Games. Victoria Tennant, who runs the company along with partner Gavin, said: “At just over 12 months old the company has grown from a fleet of one fridge trailer in May 2013 to having four units on fleet including freezer trailers by the end of July 2014.
Frosty has seen many of the major events throughout Scotland in 2014 including T in the Park, The Wickerman Festival and the Commonwealth Games. “Baby Frosty” our first trailer as he is affectionately known is even making the long journey up to the Isle of Eigg with the Glasgow School of Art for the Howling Fling Festival! “The only downside for us as the drivers is we only get to see the before and after of an event – Lucky Frosty got to enjoy it all!”

Chamber member Ayrshire Eye Clinic & Laser Centre opened its doors January this year, making it the first independent private eye clinic in Scotland. The facility, in Ayr Town Centre, was very much a local project as it was refurbished using a local architect Phil Durkin of Design Studio, Ayr. Giglets Education: Growing Up and Going Back to School Ayrshire-based EdTech company, Giglets, will launch education platform, ‘The Learning Cloud’, at this year’s Scottish Learning Festival starting 24th company’s entrepreneurial journey. Giglets was first created in 2007 as part of a school project with Young Enterprise Scotland. Giglets started out publishing paper books about the colourful capers of a character named Tam O’ Haggis. A new team relaunched Giglets Education in March 2011, following a move into the digital world and the development of ‘SmartReads’ animated ebooks: adapted classics, enhanced with full-colour animations and music. In 2012, Giglets Education entered Entrepreneurial Spark, Scotland’s Business Accelerator. In 2013, Giglets won £46,500 in the prestigious Scottish EDGE Awards delivered by Scottish Enterprise.
In the 2013 Ayrshire Business Awards delivered by the Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce, Giglets won the ‘Most Promising New Business Award 2013’ and CEO Craig Johnstone received the ‘Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2013’. “Winning at the Ayrshire Business Awards raised our profile. That recognition helped us win customers in Ayrshire and secure continued support from other organisations. Giglets then also became a finalist in the Scottish Chambers of Commerce Awards. We learned a lot from the rigorous interview experience and in the end it was fantastic to celebrate the success of our dedicated team.” Giglets CEO, Craig Johnstone At the Scottish Learning Festival Giglets Education will launch ‘The Learning Cloud’, a web-based software solution for Primary and Secondary schools. Teachers will experience The Learning Cloud’s groundbreaking e-reading technology, SmartReads animated ebooks and tailored education resources. “The Learning Cloud is the foundation on which we can build a global business delivering world-class educational materials. The Scottish Learning Festival is the perfect launch pad!” Giglets CEO, Craig Johnstone
Allergy Awareness From December 13th and make available information about key food allergens which have been used as ingredients. This new requirement (the European Food Information Regulation 1169/2011 EC) will affect all food businesses from cafés to colleges, hotels and hospitals, care homes and nurseries. The law will also change the way information is printed on prepacked foods. The size of the text will be regulated, and allergen ingredients will be highlighted eg bolded on the label. As businesses prepare to meet these new requirements, many are also reviewing existing food allergen controls. Existing legislation (eg the Food Safety Act 1990) already requires food sold to be of the substance demanded, and food information should not mislead. Many businesses have already developed allergen management policies, and have appropriate training, signage and risk management in place. The REHIS Joint Award in Allergy Awareness Course was accredited in 2011, and was based on a qualification first developed by Hazel Gowland of Allergy Action www.allergyaction.org and Graeme Kerr formally of James Watt College www.allergyandhygiene.co.uk for nursery staff in West Dunbartonshire. If you would like to arrange an Allergy Awareness course in your workplace, or arrange to attend an open course, please contact Graeme Kerr, At Allergy and Hygiene Solutions Ltd

Work Experience – Greenwood Conference Centre In my week of work experience at Greenwood Conference Centre I have learned how the workplace operates; I have helped (or tried to) with things like finance, organisation and setting up the iPads that the centre has acquired.
Through work experience you get to (shockingly) experience working in the place you choose to work in and not have any false expectations about what you want to do once you’re older, have experience in the equipment you may need to use and also to learn how you act with people who are in your place of work, this would be useful because I don’t think anyone would like to go into a place with no idea how to talk to them. I think work experience prepares you in a way just sitting in a classroom can’t.
Emma – Kilwinning Academy
Police Scotland Police Scotland in South Ayrshire were delighted to again provide a week’s work experience programme for pupils from the 8 Academies in the area. This year 15 pupils were given the chance to see various departments within the Police and were given an insight into how the Police work. The pupils involved were very interested in the role of the Police and many hope to have a career in the Police. At the end of the week the pupils were then given the chance to use the
Stuart - Loudoun Academy – Work Experience On the first day of work experience Stuart helped set up equipment and observed while we set about lifting and grinding the floor in a Marks and Spencer store where most of our work takes place. After the uplift was complete he was shown how to mix filler and fill in holes among other tasks. Stuart used various hand tools in the preparation for floor levelling compound and was gaining more confidence in identifying and retrieving what tools were needed as the days passed. He was also asking more questions on how we received jobs and organised them to be carried out. As the week progressed Stuart was given an insight in to how much effort it took to keep up with work demand and keep such a large company as Marks & Spencer happy. Our next job was replacing carpet, this was a pressure job and gave Stuart the hard task of making sure customers were safe from our work zone and if they did need to get passed he assisted them in doing so. He performed this task very well and showed he had good manners and was able to communicate with the customers. Stuart did really well throughout the week and impressed on various levels, I would however suggest he needs to think for himself rather than 22

be told what to do, small things like picking up rubbish rather than walking passed it and decision making on trivial things like what to have for lunch! According to Stuart he would happily do the job again and I am pleased to say I would definitely have him back. Well done Stuart.

insight and information they had received to run a table top exercise. All the pupils participated very well and they showed that they had listened over the week making sound decisions in the exercise. The pupils were very positive about the week and most were convinced that it was the career they wished to follow.

Making young people your business OVER the next six months the Chamber’s Education team will be promoting Skills Development Scotland’s Certificate of Work Readiness and encouraging employers to look to new talent to improve their business. The certificate is an award for young people who are ready for work for their first experience of the working world, but need a little guidance. How does it work? • The Certificate of Work Readiness is Scottish Qualifications Authority approved • SDS will work with employers to identify the young person that is right for your business • The Certificate takes around 10 weeks to complete and involves 190 hours of work experience • The business will endorse the performance of the young person and decide if they are work-ready • A training provider will be on hand to minimise the time you need to spend on the process
• A training allowance or Education Maintenance Allowance may be available to the young person as a payment Business Liaison Co-ordinator Claire Baird believes the project is extremely worthwhile and hugely beneficial to both parties. She said: “Certificate of Work Readiness is valuable and worthwhile program that helps get young people in employment. This programme is aimed at entry level work so is the stage before Modern Apprenticeships. “It benefits young people as it gives them confidence and a greater understanding of the workplace and for employers they have the opportunity to provide young people with employment. “SDS is keen to build on the employer network and have previously worked with Scottish Chambers of Commerce but they now want to target youth employment hotspots.” Jade McQuiston is one young person who has benefitted from the scheme already. Here is her story: “I started coming to STEP as I was on a flexible timetable at school and started a Childcare course at college run by STEP for two days every week instead of going into school.
I was part of the first group at STEP to start the Certificate of Work Readiness. I wasn’t sure about going in for the group as I wasn’t sure what to expect. It was good to hear about what other people were doing in their work place and taking part in the discussions about what would be expected by an employer and what I should be doing. I liked the customer care part of the course as I learned how to approach customers and be polite to them which helped me when I went into my work placement. I liked getting feedback from my employer about what I was doing well and what things I needed to get better at. I think that completing the Certificate of Work Readiness helped me to prepare for what was expected in the workplace and also getting real experience in the leisure industry helped my confidence and helped me to realise that this is the type of work I definitely want to do.” Claire added: “There is no cost to employers but they are asked to provide Personal Protective Equipment, Identify mentor/supervisor and complete a scorecard at end of the placement.” For further information please contact Claire Baird on 01292 678666 or by email at cbaird@ayrshire-chamber.org
LX Arts Ltd Connor and Kyle from Carrick Academy enjoyed their work experience, they helped out with the community mosaic I’m working on and came up with some excellent design ideas for self-guided leaflets for Barr’s Heritage Trails. I suspect their favourite part was smashing china for the mosaic which they did with enthusiasm & energy! They did well interpreting the children’s designs in mosaic and also discovered that it isn’t as easy as one imagines. Ross also gave them a wee chat about CAD design, showing examples of event, corporate, theatre and stadium lighting and talking through options in our industry.
Hansel Employment support has always been central to Hansel’s ethos, from the sheltered workshops of our early days to today’s vibrant and dynamic Employment Services which supports over 200 people each year to explore employment as a lifestyle choice. We support our customers to develop their employability and work in partnership with employers and partners across Ayrshire to create opportunities for customers to achieve their career aspirations. As a sub-contractor to Shaw Trust, Hansel is one of the top performing agencies supporting people living with disabilities into work in the UK.
A wee note - the Ayr Bandstand, based on ideas from ‘STEP’ is currently being painted by STEP girls, aided by previous Carrick Academy work experience student Claire , who often assists on
LXarts projects since coming to us. She is an excellent artist & worker whose future creative career is sure to be very successful.
One very successful initiative has been the Schools Project, a work experience programme for young adults with learning disabilities, delivered in partnership with East Ayrshire Council’s Education Department. The schools taking part this year were: Willowbank, Park, Doon Academy, Cumnock Academy and Loudoun Academy.
The project has been so successful that we are in the process of planning for next year so we can offer this opportunity to more young adults in transition. We hope to be able to extend the project Ayrshire-wide in the future.
The young people all thoroughly enjoyed the programme which began with an interview to determine which of Hansel supported business they would be placed in: the Laundry, Lindy’s (catering) or Grounds Maintenance. This and the week-long work placement focussed on gaining skills to increase their employability and provided an introduction to the world of work which was valued by the young people and the Education Department.

Best ever Easter for National Trust for Scotland The National Trust for Scotland has recently enjoyed its most successful Easter ever and Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce member Tosh Lubek Productions played an important part in the Trust’s success. Tosh Lubek is an award winning writer and producer who can count amongst his many accolades a Gold Sony, the radio industry’s Oscar. But over and above winning awards, Tosh also has a talent for working to tight timescales and budgets, a combination that is appreciated by the National Trust for Scotland. Earlier this year, the National Trust for Scotland, in conjunction with Cadbury, arranged Cadbury Easter Egg Trails at 45 of their properties across Scotland, including Ayrshire’s Culzean Castle and Country Park and The Robert Burns Birthplace Museum.
Town centre retail boost is our latest AMBITION! The retail trade in South Ayrshire’s town centres is set to benefit from a new package of support thanks to South Ayrshire Council’s flagship £1.5 million AMBITION programme. AMBITION for Town Centres was launched this week by Council Leader, Councillor Bill McIntosh, and is the latest development within the AMBITION programme, which is designed to support businesses and generate economic growth throughout the area. The programme – which was launched in September last year – will see the Council invest £1.5 million over three years to support job creation and economic growth in South Ayrshire. The overall aims of AMBITION are to create jobs, keep jobs, help businesses start-up, help businesses grow, increase the number of social enterprises and, ultimately, help improve the local economy in South Ayrshire in a lasting and meaningful way. AMBITION for Town Centres is based around four main routes of support: • Shop Front Improvement Grant – to improve the appearance of the ground floor frontages of commercial premises both 24

Carly Lamberty, the Trust’s Marketing Manager (Families & Children) explains: “Our campaign aim was to secure a 5% increase in the number of children participating in a trail compared to last year. To achieve that increase the Trust decided radio would be an important element in the marketing campaign and airtime was booked across Scotland. For the creative aspect we turned to Tosh Lubek Productions to produce engaging and region-specific commercials. Tosh created bespoke ads for each of the key target radio stations and alongside the Trust and Cadbury, developed a ‘top and tail’ campaign with a strong call to action – to visit the Trust’s website for more information.
children unleashed their inner ‘eggsplorer’! Meanwhile The Robert Burns Birthplace Museum team saw a 21% increase in the number of children participating in a trail - 1,314 children. With such impressive results you can be sure that Carly Lamberty will be booking more radio airtime on radio stations across Scotland and commercial production by Tosh Lubek Productions. As Carly Lamberty says, “From humour or drama to factual and fun, and from our Cadbury Easter Egg Trails to jousting tournaments, Christmas events, outdoor theatre and more, Tosh always produces strong ads, which deliver results for the Trust.”
The radio element of the Trust’s Easter campaign played a key part in delivering the Trust’s most successful Easter ever. Traffic to our website, www.nts.org.uk, increased by 27% compared to last year and 27,724 children joined a Cadbury Easter Egg Trail in 2014 – a 12% increase on last year. However, locally the results were even more impressive with the trail at Culzean Castle and Country Park being the most visited Cadbury Easter Egg Trail in Scotland - over 3 days, 2,725

Ayrshire and, crucially, to make a real difference for our residents, businesses and visitors.
• Retail Business Development Grant – for projects that demonstrate an increase in footfall to the local area, sales outwith Ayrshire and the generation of additional employment opportunities. A maximum grant of £2,000 can be awarded.
“Our town centres were hit hard by both the global downturn and the impact of changes in the way people shop, spend money and set expectations for their town centres. Our programme recognises this and sets out to lay the foundations for a bold and sustainable approach to creating jobs, reducing unemployment and making sure our town centres are attractive, vibrant and geared up to welcome visitors and shoppers alike.
• Town Centre Collective Grant – used to support the development of co-operative groups which can create enhanced economic impact through collective working within the retail sector. Projects must demonstrate – through collaboration – how the group will access new customers and markets, add vibrancy to the area, increase their reach and grow revenues. A maximum grant of £10,000 can be awarded. • And – coming soon – brand new retail incubation spaces which will provide retail start-ups with the ideal location to develop and grow, offering everything from virtual support to shop accommodation. These incubator units are modelled on successful similar units in Ayr, Girvan and Maybole and will offer a supportive environment for retailers, with direct access to handson specialist support and mentoring. Councillor McIntosh said: “The AMBITION programme is a key part of our proactive and determined efforts to drive business and maximise commercial opportunities in South
Councillor McIntosh concluded: “Whether it’s your first steps as a retailer or you’re getting ready to branch out and expand, our AMBITION for Town Centres will be able to assist, helping even the smallest fledgling retailer to spread their wings!” For further information about AMBITION for Town Centres – or for any other aspect of the AMBITION programme – call 01292 616265 or visit www.ambitionprogramme.co.uk.
