PARTNERS FOR BUSINESS Ayrshire Chamber wishes to acknowledge the support of the following companies as sponsors of our Partners for Business programme.
In this, my first introduction to the Chamber magazine, I think it’s right that I flag up the fact that it is a huge personal honour to take on the role of President of the Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry. First of all, I want to pay tribute to our outgoing president, Waiyin Hatton, who has worked tirelessly over the last two years to promote and support all the hard work being done by the Chamber team. Waiyin has worked to further the Chamber’s aims and she has been a hugely positive ambassador for the ACCI on a vast array of stages. On behalf of the Board, I want to pass on our sincere thanks to Waiyin and wish her the very best for the future. As the newly elected President I continue to be amazed by the number of passionate Ayrshire business owners and leaders whom I have met since taking over my new role. It is easy in the current World to be cynical and focus on bad news stories and to ignore the positive efforts being made by genuinely passionate people.
“
Ayrshire is a great place to work, live and to do business...
”
This is not in my nature or indeed in my mandate and my simple pledge to all members is that during my tenure as President I will work hard to highlight the very best of Ayrshire. Ayrshire is a great place to work, live and to do business and when you look around it is not hard to see that we are actually blessed with some absolutely top class businesses and some really inspiring success stories.
STUART CRESSWELL
World class hotels and restaurants are a good place to start and when you look at the transformation that this sector has undergone in recent years it is not hard to see the positive change that has been achieved by a group of talented local entrepreneurs investing in their own businesses but also working cooperatively to develop coordinated brands such as Taste Ayrshire. One of the ACCI’s key drivers for success is to encourage Ayrshire Business to do Business with other Ayrshire Businesses and through our regular ACCI Networking events and promotion of the Buy Ayrshire brand I believe that locally based people can really make a difference to the prosperity of a region. People generally do prefer doing business with their friends!! So please do come along to some of our events, visit the Chamber website, display the Buy Ayrshire sticker and sign up and “like” our Facebook and Twitter feeds. Finally, please remember that our CEO Val Russell and all the team at the Chamber are there to help your business so please do get in touch if you need any assistance or advice on any business related matters… because for sure even if we don’t know the answer we will know someone in Ayrshire who does !!

Leading figures from the business community in Ayrshire are to lead work to develop Scotland’s young workforce in the region. The Developing the Young Workforce in Ayrshire regional group will aim to improve links between education and work in the three local authority area. Cabinet Secretary for Fair Work, Skills and Training Roseanna Cunningham met key stakeholders at University of the West of Scotland’s Ayr campus to launch the group which is made up of representatives from the private and public sectors. She said: “I am very pleased that the Developing the Young Workforce regional group for Ayrshire is up and running. While there is a considerable amount of good work happening in the area, I recognise that much more can be done to support young women and men towards sustainable and rewarding jobs. “Employers will play a key role in the delivery of the aims of Scotland’s Youth Employment Strategy – a 40 per cent
reduction in youth unemployment by 2021. “We want an improved relationship between schools and employers that will allow all of our young people to progress, whatever their background or gender.” Val Russell, CEO Ayrshire Chamber, added: “We’re delighted to be leading the Ayrshire Regional Group which is a natural extension to the education work we already deliver. We are confident that working closely with partners, both public and private sector, we will lead the changes required to create a fairer Ayrshire giving all young people support tailored to their needs and equip them with the skills and attitudes required to help Ayrshire business grow and prosper. “Our vision is to support all unemployed young people regardless of cause, uncover natural talent, and facilitate its growth in the perfect environment – educational or workplace – whilst instilling self-belief.” A recent British Chambers of Commerce survey revealed that employers across the UK believe that young people entering the workplace from school, college or university
Statistics from British Chambers of Commerce Business and Education Survey was conducted in July - August 2015. It received 3,246 responses from businesses and 306 responses from schools, colleges and universities. • EMBED KEY SKILLS FOR WORK IN THE CURRICULUM. are unprepared. The BCC is calling for action not just from ministers and schools, but also from businesses, to help plug skills gaps and help young people make a successful transition from education to work. John Longworth, BCC Director General, said: “Our latest research shows that businesses and schools are still worlds apart when it comes to getting young people ready for the world of work. “It doesn’t need to be like this. Preparing students to face potential employers should be given the same level of priority as academic achievement in schools across the UK.” The DYWA group aims to ensure that young people develop the skills and positive attitudes required to take the next steps towards the world of work. It will work closely with the 26 secondary and associated 137 primary schools, 11 Additional Special Needs schools and all campuses of Ayrshire College. Building on the foundations of well-established employer engagement at school and college level in Ayrshire, the group will ensure that all young people reach their full potential, nurture the confidence to develop career and vocational interests including entrepreneurship and ambition.
• HOLD LESSONS AROUND RECRUITMENT AND INTERVIEW TECHNIQUES. Most businesspeople think schools should teach students how to conduct themselves in an interview (78%), demonstrate transferable skills (54%) and communicate lessons learned from work experience (46%). • PUT DIRECT CONTACT WITH LOCAL BUSINESSES AT THE HEART OF CAREERS GUIDANCE. Firms think careers advice should include workplace experiences (64%), encounters with employers and employees (62%), and link curriculum learning to careers (45%). • THERE IS A MISMATCH BETWEEN EDUCATION LEADERS AND BUSINESSPEOPLE when it comes to careers guidance. Eight out of ten secondary schools believe they are effective at offering all types of careers guidance. However, all businesses surveyed thought careers guidance needs reform.
• BUSINESSES WANT CAREERS GUIDANCE REFORMS TO INCLUDE WORKPLACE EXPERIENCES (64%), encounters with employers and employees (62%) and curriculum learning linked to careers (45%). • A SMALLER PROPORTION OF BUSINESSES THINK CAREERS GUIDANCE SHOULD BE TAILORED to the needs of each pupil (40%); be a structured programme, supported by the Senior Leadership Team (38%); or include personal guidance from a careers adviser (32%). • JUST 24% OF BUSINESSES THINK SECONDARY SCHOOLS ARE EITHER VERY EFFECTIVE OR FAIRLY EFFECTIVE at preparing young people for work - with 69% of businesses saying secondary schools are not very effective or not effective at all at preparing young people for work. While 7% of firms don’t know. • IN COMPARISON, 40% OF BUSINESSES THINK FURTHER EDUCATION COLLEGES ARE NOT VERY EFFECTIVE OR NOT EFFECTIVE AT ALL, and 41% think universities are not very effective or not effective at all at preparing young people for work. While these numbers are less than those for secondary schools, they are still high and concerning, given the skills gaps employers presently face.

ZERO CHANGES FOR CARBON SIMPSINNS TEAM HEAT FROM WHAT WE EAT After many years working in the dairy business, Stephen Faulkner’s decision to pack it all in and venture into a startup business in 2014 may seem brave, but with WHRL Solutions’ growing continuously, and business support from Entrepreneurial Spark, it’s looking like the gamble is paying off.
YOUR BUSINESS | WINTER 2015
SimpsInns is delighted to announce Gill Gallagher and Irene Leslie in their new Director positions within the popular Ayrshire hospitality and leisure group. Gallagher, already a Director at SimpsInns, will take up her new role as Commercial Director from January 2016, while Leslie’s position as Operations Director begins with immediate effect at the award winning company.
“The announcement is recognition of Gill and Irene’s hard work and commitment and is part of an overall restructuring process that includes senior management,” explained Malcolm, who retains a hands-on role within SimpsInns and continues to reinvest in the company’s properties and services.
Both have been key players at SimpsInns for many years and work closely with owners, Malcolm and Karen Simpson, at the family-owned business.
“In a highly competitive marketplace Irene’s methodical approach and attention to detail will help ensure we maintain the high levels of expectation we and our customers demand.”
Stephen said: “I was sold instantly on the idea. I’ve spent the last 19 years working in the commercial finance side of dairy businesses in the UK so I know how important it is to save money.”
“I have been involved with SimpsInns for more years than I care to remember and have been working with Malcolm and Karen since the beginning when they started out with the Old Loans Inn,” says Gallagher, who has been with SimpsInns for 17 years.
In further changes, Janette Mitchell becomes the new Revenue and Sales Manager; Laura Gallagher as Finance and HR Manager; Head professional Eddie Thomson becomes Head PGA Professional and Golf Manager with additional responsibility for the day-today running of the golf academy and golf courses; Paul Gerrard moves from the Old Loans Inn, Troon, to become the new Operations Manager at The Gailes Hotel, while George Paton moves in the opposite direction as Operations Manager to oversee the refurbishment programme at the Old Loans Inn.
Stephen added: The support of my enabler, Frank Gormanley, in our bi-weekly meetings has been invaluable in challenging me to help accelerate the growth of our business.”
Leslie has been the Group Operations Manager at SimpsInns for the last eight years and has witnessed a period of exceptional growth over the last four years and is looking forward to the new challenges ahead. She said: “I am delighted to be taking

on this new role at a very exciting time for SimpsInns.”

UK’S LARGEST INDEPENDENT FINANCE PROVIDER CREATED
LDF, one of the UKs leading business finance providers, has acquired Scottish based asset finance broker First Independent Finance, in a deal that will create the UK’s largest independent finance provider. The combined group, which will provide approximately £400m annually to clients in both the corporate and professions markets, will continue to trade under both the LDF and First Independent Finance brands, employing 175 people. The merger will also make it far easier for SMEs to have all their funding requirements dealt with by one finance partner. LDF say that as banks’appetite for lending to SMEs remains somewhat restricted, a substantial lending gap has emerged for small and medium businesses looking to invest in assets to drive growth. Ayrshire based First Independent Finance, founded in 1999, is one of the UK’s leading asset finance brokers in a number of sectors including construction, agriculture and transport. Allan Ross, Managing Director of First Independent Finance, says:“Our expertise in hard assets, combined with LDF’s leading position in the soft asset and loan markets, makes this merger one that will benefit both businesses and clients. “SME demand for finance is strong, and this deal gives us the scale to make a real difference in addressing it.” Peter Alderson, Managing Director of LDF, says:“This is a deal for growth. Both companies are leaders in their fields, making their combined product capability offering and client base the strongest in the SME finance market.”

‘You can’t judge a book by its cover’ In life this is a valued, insightful phrase, however in business you are judged on each and every image related to your brand. Your office being the central focus and sometimes the first impression you make on your potential clients. With one glance it tells your clients if you are credible, reliable, and trustworthy. Before they have even seen your work, it lets them know if you are a company that they want to be associated with. This is the same for staff, as the surroundings have a huge impact on the atmosphere with in the office. If you give your staff a welcoming, comfortable space it
suggests that they are valued and appreciated. They are in turn more productive and most importantly, happy at work. Obviously there are a lot more influences that effect the working environment than an interior, but if you get the basics right you are off to a good start. Recently we visited 8 Miller Road in Ayr, which encompasses all of these values. A traditional sandstone building which has been impressively refurbished by Blackbox Offices to create a beautiful twist between traditional architecture and modern design. With care taken to
restore all original features, while still introducing contemporary colours within light filled open spaces, this building provides a beautiful space to work in and welcome clients too. Take up in the first month has been strong, therefore if you are looking for a stunning new office we suggest you head along to Miller Road for a peek soon. Find out more at:

MENTORING WORKS FOR BIDWORKS Every start-up knows those early years are the toughest, and for consultants and freelancers in particular – it can be a lonely road. Fortunately, Kelly Morris managed to navigate her way through those early challenges with support from Business Mentoring Scotland.
YOUR BUSINESS | WINTER 2015
How were you matched? Kelly: I met Rhona Brown from BMS and explained that I needed someone direct and quite challenging. Someone that had been there and done it – with experience. Someone that I could respect. Jim: Kelly and I first met in the Meridian in Ayr for coffee and an initial chat. We met a few times afterwards and then… Kelly: …and then we had a break.. Jim: Well……yes we had a brief break. It was early days, you weren’t quite sure if you wanted to be freelance or a business and then at one point you said you were going to get a normal job!!! Kelly: ..that’s right. It was a brief thought. Jim of course knew I would be back.
12
What kind of support did Jim offer? Kelly: He was a sounding board. He mostly listened, and encouraged me to question myself. He provided clarity and perspective. He rarely gave specific advice and he never told me what to do… Jim: Well that’s not what mentoring is about, it’s about supporting you to make your own decisions….. Kelly: ….that’s true but often the sheer look of horror on your face said it all! Jim: ..ah yes, well you see, Kelly is very much a ‘jump off a cliff and build the plane on the way down’ type of person.
In 2013 Kelly set up a freelance consultancy business, providing management consultancy support to small businesses. In less than a year she was in high demand for her bid management and writing services and unsure which path to follow. With their programme reaching its conclusion, Kelly Morris, and mentor, Jim Rae, shared how mentoring has worked for them. Did you ever disagree? Kelly: Yes…on price, every time we met. Jim: Yes we will continue to debate that issue. Kelly is an entrepreneur but she’s a ‘socialpreneur’. She’s got a lot of time for people and wants to create a business for others before herself. So I’ve had to pull her back to the entrepreneur every now and then. How has your business grown? Kelly: In 12 months we’ve gone from one consultant to a full time team of four. We’ve rebranded to www.bidworks.co.uk and moved into larger office premises. Would you recommend the programme? Jim: Definitely - if you are willing to commit and want something from it. Kelly: Absolutely. If it wasn’t for Jim, Bidworks wouldn’t be here today. It’s all about getting the match right though.
Kelly and John Morris manage Bidworks, a company dedicated to helping small businesses win big contracts. Jim Rae is a coach and mentor with Business Mentoring Scotland. The committee, organised by Scottish Chambers of Commerce, in partnership with Turkish Airlines, took part in fact finding mission to an economy which has progressed rapidly to become one of the strongest developing markets in the world. Scott McKie, IT Sales at Microtech, found the trip to be extremely beneficial, building new relationships and determining trade routes. “Having also gained the opportunity to speak about our own companies, we were able to forge direct links with the key players in both the public and private sectors and discuss our

ur single alliance has remained with those clients who we having been working hard to protect throughout these years.
From the 1st September, joint Directors Tom Yorke and John McQuaid took over the business from Brian Murphy. With more than 50 years collective insurance experience, we are upholding and building on the business values that were set out by Brian nearly 40 years ago. Service comes first. Then second, then third. If we could make our transparent service any clearer to you, we would find a way how. Our interests as an insurance broker are closely aligned with those of our clients, in that we want to make sure that whatever your insurance package looks like, it is right, not nearly right. We measure the risk first, and the level to which insurance meets that risks second. To find a policy that is going to fulfill its purpose to a degree that we are comfortable with, we have access to a wide range of insurers, rather than a restricted panel. We have maintained solid relationships with both mainstream and niche insurers. For our clients, this means a choice of in-depth, strong protection against the risks that we have identified, and those which may be to come.
An expert check-up of your protection Your conversation with Murphy Insurance can start today with a free insurance health check of your existing protection. After carrying out a desk-based review of your current policy, we will deliver the results of our findings in a free report. This will highlight any shortcoming which we believe may be detrimental to your current and future protection. We will also advise where we think particular covers could be reduced or even cancelled if we think, from our knowledge and experience, that it is safe to do so. From this policy health check you can expect to be given a greater understanding of what your policy will and will not do in the reality of a claim, and also means that you are better informed on where best to spend your budget. If our report comes back with no perceived gaps, you still walk away with renewed confidence in their protection that comes from an expert second opinion.

INVESTMENT TO MAKE ‘GRID’ READY FOR WINTER WEATHER
Keeping the lights on in winter is a real challenge. Last year, emergency teams at SP Energy Networks responded to 5,500 incidents on the electricity network in Ayrshire.
It doesn’t matter who you pay your electricity bill to, SP Energy Networks are responsible for bringing electricity safely and securely to 360,000 homes and businesses in Ayrshire. The company announced plans to invest £154 million in Ayrshire and Clyde South between 2015 and 2023, which will be used to improve resilience to major storms, as well as replacing ageing parts of the network and connecting new customers. Graham Campbell, Ayrshire and Clyde South District Manager said: “We are committed to significant investment in Ayrshire over the next decade to further improve the service we provide to all our customers, especially during the difficult winter months.”

Power cuts are now rarer than ever, with targeted investment in Ayrshire reducing the number of faults on the network by 18 percent since 2012. However, an outage can still happen and there are some simple steps which local businesses can take to prepare for a power cut.
22
A Freephone telephone number is available around the clock, 0800 092 9290, and those with smartphones can find a handy postcode lookup tool on the company’s website and the latest updates on major faults can be found via their Twitter feed, @spenergynetwork. Graham added: “By taking some small steps now, local businesses can ensure they are prepared for any eventuality this winter. As our investment in the local network in Ayrshire continues, we are keen to play an active role within the business community in Ayrshire and are delighted to be working with the Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce to facilitate this.”

33 YEARS AND STILL GOING STRONG! Troon’s shopping has changed over the years but retailer De Beaufort has established itself as one of the town’s well known and loved stores. Co-owners Heather Barnes and Jenny Holford admit life in the town has changed over the years since they started out in 1982 but their ability to grow the business throughout that period has saw them develop to what they are today. What began as a shoe shop in Troon branched out into boutiques in Ayr and Kilmarnock and back to Troon again where they’ve settled.
Heather explained: “We started the business in 1982 and it was a different place to what it is today. Jenny and I bought the wee shop in Church Street Troon and having been advised that the town needed a ladies shoe shop the decision was made and Dinky Doo was born.” The pair have been in their current home in Church Street, Troon, for 24 years and paid tribute to their loyal customers, which spans generations. Heather added: “We put all the eggs in one basket and condensed the business to the new shop where we have been for 24 years with the new name of De Beaufort.
“We were fortunate to have Moorcroft Pottery and Sheila Fleet jewellery among our brands. This went like a storm so much it was too small for all the boxes so we extended the floor space to present the two businesses together under one roof. “The combined business has evolved over these years and we now have what some call Troon’s mini department store. So the moral of the story is keep moving and keep the business interesting. However, none of this would be possible without our hard-working, loyal employees and so many lovely customers who now come in with their daughters and granddaughters.”
TO HOST, OR NOT TO HOST: THAT IS THE QUESTION One of the latest developments in the telecommunications world, Hosted Telephony allows for small and medium sized businesses to operate an advanced phone system without investing in telephone hardware. Interested? We thought you might be.

Spec-ing up without paying up is only the start, however. Hosted PBX is operated and maintained by the chosen VoIP provider allowing your employees to work from home, while away on a business trip, or on a mobile device all while connected to the office phone system. You lose none of the in-office features either, allowing you transfer calls, put callers on hold, organise conference calls, and maintain the same automated selection menus. How is this possible? Hosted PBX is one of the latest ‘Cloud-based’ technologies which means that Halo manages and maintains the system, the Cloud hosts the solution, and you can work from anywhere on any device. It is not only cost effective, both in the immediate and long-term, it is quick to set up and easy to use, and its inherent scalability means that it grows with your business.
If Hosted PBX is not for you, an On-site PBX solution might be the way to go. Although these systems require an investment in installation and hardware, they are tailor-made for your business and are owned by you. These systems work on the site of your business, making them ideal for single-space enterprises such as hotels, restaurants and large offices. Whether you feel that the new kid on the block or the tried and tested solution is for you, Halo Communications can provide the system your business needs to your exact requirements. TAKING FIRST STEPS TOWARD WORK FUTURE POSSIBILITIES Loudoun Academy’s annual business seminar took place in September and involved all their S5 students. The seminar gave pupils an insight into a variety of career opportunities within different sectors such as the STEM or creative industries and the hospitality sector. The students identified what workshops they wished to attend they were interested in and spent the morning in the workshops after hearing from keynote speaker Stuart Dale MD of where2 and the Head Teacher, Linda McAulay Griffiths, who both gave an insight into their career, the opportunities and risks they had taken along the way.

EXPLORING THE CREATIVE INDUSTRIES
24
Pupils from across North Ayrshire’s secondary schools had an excellent day’s input from local and national employers working in the Heritage, Cultural and Creative sectors. On the day, pupils participated in a variety of hands-on workshops which saw them creating film, examining artworks and using computer game software to solve problems. In a speed networking format, the extensive range of jobs that pupils were able to learn about included archaeology, architecture, heritage building crafts, museum curator, textile manufacturing, traditional storytelling, drama and a whole lot more. The pupils overwhelmingly rated the event as “excellent, highly informative” and the main suggestion to improve future events was “more time.” Skills shortages in the engineering and construction sectors are well publicised, but the importance of the heritage, cultural and creative industries to the Scottish economy cannot be ignored.
Providing opportunities for young people to improve their employability prospects is becoming a major pillar in the education curriculum. Recently, Kyle Academy S3 Careers Fayre, organised by Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce, was a great success and gave pupils the chance to speak first hand to employers preparing them for the world of work and the skills and attributes that employers are really looking for. To implement the recommendations of the Developing Scotland Young Workforce report, the school is currently piloting the SQA Employability Award with S3 pupils, using innovative approaches to learning. Part of this course involves researching employers and applying for a ‘mock job’ and the fayre offered ‘real-life experience’ giving pupils the opportunity to speak to different employers and learn as much as they could about their businesses. Pupils are now well informed about the companies that they will be applying for their “mock jobs” and hopefully prepare pupils for the world of work. Claire McAuley, Principal Guidance Teacher, Kyle Academy added: “I would personally like to thank each and every one of the employers for giving up time in their busy schedules to come along on the morning to speak to our young people and answer their questions.” The education team at Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce work in partnership with all schools throughout the region to bring these opportunities to our young people, for more details either visit the education page on our website or call 01292 678 666 and ask to speak to one of the team.
COURTNEY-ANNE’S GREAT WORK EXPERIENCE My name is Courtney-Anne and I am sixteen years old and I am blind. My work experience was with Ayrshire Children’s Services and I really enjoyed it. I was working in the office with Hannah and Marianne who were really nice and showed me what to do. I answered the phone and transferred calls to other members of staff, made up leaflets and did some typing. I can type well as I can feel where the keys are because there are notches on the F and J keys and I have a good memory so I can remember where the other letters are. CHLOE’S ADMINISTRATIVE ROLE
Chloe Strang, Belmont Academy I went to Consolidated Carriers Ltd in Troon for my week’s work experience. It was a bit nerve-wracking going into the office for the first time but everyone was friendly and helped me out when I got stuck! They showed me how to use their own system to check on customers’ orders, as well as the tracking system for lots of different suppliers. I did the scanning and entered delivery details onto customer jobs. It was interesting to see how the systems all worked and hear the different kinds of calls everyone was dealing with. I felt part of the team and was really happy to have spent my work experience there – although the days are a bit longer than at school!
CUMNOCK ACADEMY FORGING TIES WITH LOCAL BUSINESSES
Darren McBlain, Cumnock Academy Cumnock Academy have developed a strong working relationship with local businesses, which has been extremely effective in providing supportive and relevant work experience placements for our young people. To date our young people have participated in a variety of very worthwhile work experience placements ranging from local garages, hairdressers, hotels, nurseries, schools and local sports facilities. Some of our placements have been so successful that they are now built into individual curricular provision for our learners and will continue throughout the session. Our young people are much more independent and confident to try new experiences and many of them are now able to travel independently to their placements. Young people have been afforded opportunities to experience learning out with the classroom and develop relationships with new people.

DEVILISHLY GOOD EVENT MARKETING
Successful events depend on a number of critical factors: a strong concept, sound planning and skilled staff, to name just a few. But the difference between good events and great events is great marketing.
So when the organisers of TamFest were looking to market Ayr’s new community Halloween event, they immediately contacted Launch. Launch’s team then decided to volunteer their expertise to help the event get off the ground. Stephen Cosh, Director at Launch, said: “We started by designing a striking brand identity to reflect the desired positioning of the event. Next we selected the best mix of promotional tools to educate the target audience on what exactly TamFest is, when and where. That meant developing desktop, tablet and mobile versions of the new website, designing posters, banners and street dressing, and devising

radio and print adverts. We also set up and managed the Facebook page and created the label for the event’s exclusive ale.”
Meredith McCrindle, Chair and Lead Producer of TamFest, said: “As well as designing all the event’s marketing collateral, Launch gave TamFest its brand identity. The ‘Wee Devil’ gave a face to the event which it will be synonymous with for years to come. They donated hours of their time and their rocket fuel to help the festival take off. Their dedication to the project was reflected in the outcome. Launch was not just our marketing agency; they became an integral part of the TamFest team and we are grateful to have had them on board.”

Bob Shields, Columnist at Ayrshire Post, wrote “TamFest was a well-publicised and well-organised success … Given a few more years, it can be up there with Ayr Races and the Air Show as a day not to be missed in the Auld Toun!”

The investment, supported by a grant contribution from Scottish Enterprise’s Aid for Environmental Protection Scheme, secures the future of the skilled 225 strong workforce. It represents the latest chapter in the proud history of the Irvine plant, which began production in 1920 as Portland Glass and will enable the plant, one of the largest private employers in the area, to produce bottles primarily for the Scottish drinks industry. AYRSHIRE SET FOR A SUPERFAST BROADBAND BOOST
Over 4,200 homes and businesses across Ayrshire will be next to benefit from the arrival of high-speed fibre broadband – in the latest phase of the Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband programme, as it starts to reach more rural and remote areas. More than 455,000 homes and business are now able to connect to fibre broadband thanks to the partnership, and in addition to commercial deployments by the private sector. The project is now reaching into more local areas, with places including Fairlie, Turnberry, Uplawmoor, West Kilbride, Moscow, Torranyard and Kirkoswald all set to receive fibre broadband for the first time, with first connections expected to go live in spring 2016. Fibre broadband enables multiple users in a home or business to access the internet, download and share large files at the same time. As the higher speeds become available, anyone interested in signing up for fibre-based services should contact their broadband service provider. Sara Budge, Programme Director for Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband, said: “It is great to see smaller communities starting to benefit from our programme, while announcing that more exchanges will be included.” The Digital Scotland rollout consists of two projects. One is led by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) for its region and the other covers the rest of Scotland. Brendan Dick, BT Scotland director, said: “The Digital Scotland rollout has now passed more than half the homes and business premises currently included in our plans and it’s fantastic that our engineers are now reaching into some very small, rural communities, which have so much to gain. “We’re proud to be working hand in hand with our partners to deliver a truly Digital Scotland. the professionalism of our customer service, supported by on-going investment in technology and systems.” The First Minister responded: “I am delighted to visit Ardagh to officially open their new furnace. This is evidence of the company’s continued investment in its Irvine site, which is something to be commended.” The company employs 225 people at its Irvine site and has been located in North Ayrshire since 1921.

ARCHITECTS OF THEIR OWN SUCCESS LMA | ARCHITECTS celebrate their 21st year in business this year and, despite challenges over the last seven years, the business is going from strength to strength. Since 2008, business owner, Steve McGhee, has successfully faced the challenge of trading through a recession, seen two of his business partners retire and presided over a business restructure and a strategic repositioning of the business. Steve's core belief is that his staff are more important to the business than its customers: "If our staff are happy, then they will keep our customers happy. I believe that success is built on a good business culture. Work should be fun!" Recent projects for The Trump Corporation, NHS and the Salvation Army are measures of their success, however, their biggest achievement is in the hotel sector where they exclusively act for Premier Inn, Britain's largest hotelier, as architects in Scotland and the North of England from their base in New Road, Ayr. The Practice oversees a yearly portfolio of projects in excess of £50m for the hotelier and recently completed their Scottish flagship hotel in Glasgow situated next to the Hydro and BBC. "Investing in our staff, IT and the latest BIM (Building Information Management) technology has been essential, however, attaining ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and CHAS accreditation has really allowed us to
flourish as a business. We have consistently achieved a year on year customer satisfaction rating in excess of 96% from Premier Inn which is a result of our investment and the hard work of our team." Steve added: "We have seen turnover and profits rise year on year since 2008 and are currently on target to more than exceed this year’s growth predictions. Our next big challenge is to find new premises to accommodate our growing team!"
