Docendo Discimus Instrumantae – meaning by teaching, we learn – proposes a workshop in which an international network of contributors share their experiences on robotic fabrication processes through online instructionSets. instructionSets are an experimental protocol for sharing digital making methodologies and documenting deviations and interpretations.

Docendo Discimus Instrumantae is a creative design process and exhibition piece for the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial 2018. Experience

During Bienal preparation, I did involve the project. Due to my curiosity for designing end effectors, I gained sufficient experience while working with Burcu biçer and Efe gözen. This project took five weeks, and every week we were installing a different end effector for foam cutting, wire-bending, weaving, milling, mixing and brick building. I gained unique experiences for every installation. For instance, the possible hazards while weaving carbon-fiber, how to create a bath for resin, while carbon-fiber weaving through what speed we should use for Kuka.

The robotic arm allows to produce specific high-quality, repeatable marbling effects not easily obtainable with traditional hand-marbling.

The inherent property of the foam’s low melting point and softness facilitates the production of desired shapes effortlessly formworks.

Robot’s precision makes it possible to achieve exceptional image fidelity with a milling depth of not even a fraction of a millimeter.

Carbonfiber is woven by the robot on a circular loom as the creation of lightweight volumetric architectural components is explored.
