Through education and communication, we have created this land for them based on human values and active citizenship. Fostering Olympic spirit, our friends will continue doing their best in freedom, being responsible, respecting the importance of all beings, showing empathy and compassion (love in action), knowing that environmental awareness is a key factor for healthy living and interdependence with nature.

They yearn to learn throughout life, exploring new ideas and enhancing culture, preserving our values and acting on their frames.

And all of us, students and teachers which have participated in this eTwinning project, have a wish and hopes that by following the same values we will move Concordville from the web cloud on earth.

Αθήνα του 5ου αιώνα. Ο Περικλής οραματίζεται να κάνει την Αθήνα δημοκρατική πείθοντας τους Αθηναίους ότι πρέπει να ενδιαφέρονται για την πόλη τους. Για να διευκολύνει και τους φτωχούς να παίρνουν μέρος στις δημόσιες υποθέσεις όρισε μισθούς για όσους έπαιρναν πολιτικά αξιώματα. Αυτό μας δείχνει ότι η ενασχόληση με την πολιτική και την κοινωνική ζωή ενός τόπου ήταν επιτακτική ανάγκη από τα αρχαία χρόνια. Ο θεμελιωτής της δημοκρατίας, Κλεισθένης, και ο Περικλής έκριναν ότι κάθε πολίτης είχε υποχρέωση να συμμετέχει στα κοινά γιατί μόνο έτσι θα βοηθήσει στην εξέλιξη και πρόοδο του τόπου του. Κι ας έρθουμε στο σήμερα… Ο υπεύθυνος πολίτης δεν γεννιέται αλλά γίνεται μέσα από δύο διαδικασίες: Την πολιτική κοινωνικοποίηση και την πολιτική συμμετοχή. Χωρίς αμφιβολία η πολιτικοποίηση που καταλήγει σε ενεργούς πολίτες είναι απαραίτητη για την πολιτική δημοκρατία και αναγκαία προϋπόθεση «καλής» κι ομαλής λειτουργίας της. Ο «φιλήσυχος πολίτης» ο αδιάφορος για τα κοινά άνθρωπος αφήνει την τύχη της πολιτείας στα χέρια δημαγωγών και φιλόδοξων καιροσκόπων. Αφήνει τις υποθέσεις που τον αφορούν να πάρουν τον κατήφορο και μεταθέτει τις ευθύνες της αποτυχίας του στους συμπολίτες του και στους πολιτικούς. Ο μη συμμετέχων στα κοινά, είναι συνήθως δειλός, παθητικός, ευθυνόφοβος.

Athens in 5th century: Pericles envisions of making Athens democratic by persuading Athenians to be interested in their city. For helping the poor citizens to be able to participate in public affairs he set wages for those who undertake political “authority”/duties.

This proves that dealing with the political and social life is imperative since ancient times. The founders of democracy, Cleisthenes and Pericles held that every citizen was required to participate in public affairs, because that way they would help in the development and progress of their country.

And let's see what happens in now days ...

The responsible citizen is not born but is made through two processes: the political socialization and the political participation. Without doubt the politicization that leads to active citizens is essential for democracy and a prerequisite of "good" and smooth operation of social matters.

The “quiet-silent citizen" sometimes called “a common man” leaves the fate of the state in the hands of ambitious demagogues and opportunists. He lets others to think and act about cases that are also of his interest and shifts responsibility for a possible failure to his fellow citizens and politicians. People who don’t participate in social matters, are usually timid, passive, overspending. They adopt the philosophy of "not bother"; they are rather spectator of the common life.

Μετατρέπεται σε παράσιτο που μαζί με τους ομοίους του δεν βοηθούν στην επίλυση των κοινωνικών οικονομικών πολιτικών πολιτιστικών προβλημάτων της κοινωνίας. Το αποτέλεσμα είναι η κοινωνία να οδηγείται σε οπισθοδρόμηση. Ο άνθρωπος που είναι αμέτοχος στην κοινωνική ζωή άρα και στην κοινωνική εξέλιξη συντελεί στην τελμάτωση του πολιτισμού. Τα αίτια μιας πολιτικής αδιαφορίας είναι πολλά. Η έλλειψη πολιτικής διαπαιδαγώγησης, η ανευθυνότητα κι η ανωριμότητα καθώς και ο τρόπος που προτάσσει καθένας το ατομικό του συμφέρον το «εγώ» στο «εμείς» είναι κάποια από αυτά. Θα μπορούσαμε να προσθέσουμε τη σύγχυση που επικρατεί λόγω της ύπαρξης πολλών ιδεολογικών ρευμάτων καθώς και την απογοήτευση που παίρνει ο πολίτης από τη στάση και συμπεριφορά των σημερινών πολιτικών προσώπων που είναι εκλεγμένα από το λαό. Συνέπειες της πολιτικής απάθειας είναι ο λαός να μη συμμετέχει στα κοινά παρά μόνο παίρνοντας μέρος στις εκλογές κάθε τέσσερα χρόνια και η κοινωνική ηγεσία από τη στιγμή που δεν ελέγχεται παύει να είναι της έκφρασης της συλλογικής βούλησης. Η πολιτεία οδηγείται στη στασιμότητα και αφού οι πολίτες δεν προωθούν τα κοινά συμφέροντα οι ίδιοι ναρκοθετούν τα θεμέλια της κοινωνικής ανάπτυξης και ισορροπίας.

Κύριο μέλημα λοιπόν για την εύρυθμη λειτουργία μιας κοινωνίας είναι η δημιουργία υπεύθυνων

και

συνειδητοποιημένων

πολιτών

απαλλαγμένων

από

μισαλλοδοξία,

φανατισμούς, δογματισμούς και προκαταλήψεις. Πρέπει να γίνει κατανοητό ότι η πολιτική συνείδηση είναι ασπίδα που προφυλάσσει από τη χειραγώγηση, την υποτέλεια, ενώ η συμμετοχή στα κοινά είναι εγγύηση της ελευθερίας του ατόμου και της ευημερίας της κοινωνίας. Κι ας μην ξεχνάμε τα λόγια του στρατηγού Ι. Μακρυγιάννη: «Να είμεθα εις το εις και ουχί εις το εγώ».

They often are converted into parasites having no interest in helping society to overcome the social, economic, political and cultural problems. The result is a society driven to regress. The man who is “outside” of social life and hence social development contributes to the stagnation of culture.

There are many causes of political absence. The lack of political education, the irresponsibility and immaturity and the prioritization of personal instead of the common good.

We could also consider in this the disappointment of citizens of behavior of today politicians Τhe main consequence of political depreciation is that people participate in political matters only by during elections every four years. So the elected leadership stops to act expressing the collective will and common good since there is no control and opposition by the citizens. The state led to stagnation and since citizens do not promote the common interests by themselves they undermine the foundations of social development and balance.

Therefore, our main concern for a prosperous, healthy life of a society is to create responsible and conscious citizens which are free of intolerance, fanaticism, dogmatism and prejudices.

We should believe in political consciousness as a shield of manipulation, oppression, coercion. Active citizenship is the guarantee of the individual’s civil liberties and human rights in addition to the welfare of society. We should follow what. Makriyiannis said Put yourself in “us”; not in “me”

Notes from discussion inB3 class about Active Citizens - Individual, Political, Social and Human Rights (23 March 2016) The level of democracy and the role of the state in society are mostly defined by the status of each person’s political, social and human rights.

While traditionally, both left and right parties of the political spectrum promote the central role of the state with only slight reforms in its functions.

Neoliberal parties worldwide suggest the invigoration of the market. Civil society organizations meanwhile, suggest that the empowerment of “society of the citizens� based on active citizenship, as the only viable solution.

Active citizens feel responsiblility, are well informed about their rights and their obligations, express their views openly and participate actively in public life insisting on peace, freedom and justice for all.

For a citizen to be active, he/ she must be well informed, trained and familiar with the alternatives for his/ her participation in public life. Above all, he/ she must have a free access to information of his/ her interest. This kind of Information may broaden available choices to him/ her, support him/ her in decision making and promote his/ her active participation in a local, national and European level.
