Οι τοπικές φορεσιές όπως εξελίχθηκαν από τη Βυζαντινή Αυτοκρατορία και πέρα, δεν έχουν καμιά σχέση με τα αρχαιοελληνικά ενδύματα. Η ουσιαστική διαφορά από το αρχαιοελληνικό, με δωρική την προέλευση, ένδυμα στο μεταβυζαντινό δημιουργείται από τη φορά του στημονιού του υφάσματος πάνω στο κορμί. Τα ενδύματα αυτά είχαν το φάρδος του υφάσματος για μάκρος και, κατά βάση, ήταν άκοπα (φαρδύς όρθιος αργαλειός), ενώ τα μεταβυζαντινά ενδύματα έχουν το μήκος του υφάσματος για μάκρος και σχηματίζονται από τη συρραφή πολλών κομματιών υφάσματος (στενός πλαγιαστός αργαλειός). Οι ελληνικές φορεσιές έχουν τολμηρούς χρωματικούς συνδυασμούς και παρουσιάζουν συχνά μεγάλη φαντασία στον τρόπο πού φοριούνται τα διάφορα τμήματα τους και στα χίλια δύο στολίδια πού τις ποικίλλουν. Σήμερα, οι ελληνικές φορεσιές, απλοποιημένες και συχνά παρανοημένες, φοριούνται μόνο σε ορισμένα μέρη τις γιορτές και σε διάφορες τουριστικές εκδηλώσεις.

Το πουκάμισο πού δε λείπει από καμιά ελληνική φορεσιά. Το καφτάνι, καβάδι, άντερί, σαγιά (είδη φορέματος-πανωφοριού, φτιαγμένα συνήθως από πολύτιμη στόφα), ή το γιουρντί, σιγκούνι κλπ., (είδη αμάνικων ή και μανικωτών πανωφοριών από σαγιάκι, μάλλινο δηλαδή νεροτριβιασμένο υφαντό ύφασμα). Το φουστάνι, τσούκνα (είδη φορεμάτων με ή χωρίς μέση). Το ζωνάρι , τη ζώνη και την ποδιά. Το κοντογούνι, γιλέκι κλπ. (είδη κοντών μανικωτών ή αμάνικων ζακέτων). Τα διάφορα εσώρουχα και μικροεξαρτήματα. Τα πολύπλοκα κεφαλοκαλύμματα και κεφαλοδέματα, κυρίως νυφικά. - συχνά σύμβολα αποτροπής, καρπερότητας κλπ. - πού διευθετούνται με ξεχωριστή πάντα προσοχή, συνήθως από γυναίκες που η κοινότητα θεωρεί ειδικές.
