Don’t Make Google Penalize You By Not Having A Mobile Optimized Website By Azam Hamdoon
Did you know that google penalizes you if you donâ€&#x;t have a mobile optimized website ? Yes they actually do.. I remember when I got started online to build my business which was not too long ago, I bought a training program which told me, in order to build my business online, first I need to have a hosting account, then get my wordpress blog set up, find a suitable wordpress theme, install the relevant plugins to the blog and then have the content on the blog and then start marketing.
Imagine someone getting started for the first time online having to go through this whole technical load of information before even really getting to the most important part of running a successful business online which is marketing aspect of it. It took me almost one month to set up the whole thing as I had to learn and get familiar with all this and also trouble shoot whenever I got errors when things were not functioning properly on my website. After going through all that hassle what I discovered later was that the wordpress theme I had used was not mobile optimized. And there was no way I could use another theme that was mobile optimized as what that meant was I had to create my whole blog all over from scratch. But fortunately for me I was able to find this exact blog you are reading this post set up just in a few minutes without having to go through any technical hassle and also the important thing is its mobile optimized, I‟ll touch upon more on that later.
Why is Google so concerned about mobile optimized websites? One of the key reasons why google is the most popular search engine out there is because google always gives the best user experience to its users. In order to do that one of their main objectives is to stay on par with the global trends that‟s taking place. One of those global trends that‟s happening at a rapid pace is the use of portable and mobile devices more than ever to browse and search the web. Mobile usage comprise so much of overall online traffic that Google may already be „penalizing‟ websites that return mobile errors. According to smart insights you see clearly in the chart below how mobile internet usage has increased year on year and taken over desktop or PC internet usage in 2014
as per the inforgraphic below from smart insights it also clearly shows the popularity of smart phone ownership and tablets and also the other emerging mobile devices
So what are consumers doing on mobile ? How do consumers use mobile devices to access the Web? According to Online Publishers Association/Frank N. Magid Associates the findings are as follows: 
99.5 % access content/information
63.1 % access the Internet 62.1 % check email 49.2 % listen to music 46 % play games 41.7 % download and use apps 15 % make purchases 15 % read a book
If you paid close attention to the first point which is „99.5% access the web for content and information‟ shouldn‟t you think that content marketing plays a huge role in your online marketing efforts and the best place to do this is through a blog that‟s mobile friendly where you keep posting content that‟s useful, solves a problem and provides solutions to your particular target market. Why more and more people are using search engines is to find solutions to their problems like it can be finding for weight loss information, can be how to earn an income online, can be about how to be physically fit, can be about finding information for a particular disease whatever the niche you are in people are looking for that information in the form of content. And if there was no content, the internet wouldn‟t exist its simple as that.
How do you know when your blog is not mobile optimized Have you ever tapped on a Google Search result on your mobile phone, only to find yourself looking at a page where the text was too small, the links were tiny, and you had to scroll sideways to see all the content? This usually happens when the website has not been optimized to be viewed on a mobile phone. Google has also gone one step further and added a „mobile friendly’ label as you see on the image below to make it easier for people to find the information they are looking for in the mobile search results
And a website is eligible for the “mobile-friendly” label if it meets the following criteria as detected by Google
Avoids software that is not common on mobile devices, like Flash Uses text that is readable without zooming Sizes content to the screen so users don’t have to scroll horizontally or zoom Places links far enough apart so that the correct one can be easily tapped
Don’t make Google unhappy if you don’t currently have a mobile optimized website So it‟s not a good idea to make google be unhappy about your blog if it‟s not mobile optimized right? Because google is still the biggest search engine out there with a global market share of 85% and in my opinion they will continue to be in that position for a long long time.
What does Google do if your blog is mobile optimized So what does google do if itâ€&#x;s happy about your blog being mobile friendly or mobile optimized?
