IT’S (FINALLY) TIME TO START MAKING PLANS AGAIN The beginning of 2021 saw a more hopeful future — with more Arizonans getting vaccinated everyday, life — and the tourism industry are slowly returning to a less rigid, but still cautious, state. People are looking forward to going out to dinner, booking a staycation and visiting family and friends — all of which is more possible. With safety in mind, masks, sanitizing stations, social distancing and limited-capacity protocols have become a part of many establishments across the state, but they haven’t interfered with restaurants preparing and serving delicious dishes, attractions providing a fun escape or outdoor activities offering a chance to explore or discover something new. In the Spring/Summer issue of Experience Arizona, we’re highlighting some of the best staycation deals in the Valley, perfect for a relaxing getaway to cool off at one of the resort’s pools and water attractions; new restaurants, resorts and attractions that opened within the last year; our picks for MustTry Dishes and Desserts at acclaimed restaurants and experiences unique to Arizona that wow residents and visitors. There are more exciting things to do than ever, as vibrant entertainment and dining options are perfect for a family outing or date night. While reading this issue of Experience Arizona, we hope you learn about a restaurant and decide to try their signature dishes; we hope you make plans for a staycation or take a road trip to Northern Arizona as a reprieve from triple-digit temperatures; we hope you discover an attraction, add it to your bucket list (like the Grand Canyon or Sedona) and mark your calendar to see it for yourself. We hope you safely discover or return to a favorite spot and make memories with fun and unforgettable experiences unique to the state. We’ll see you again soon.

ITALIAN & PIZZA

FRANCO’S ITALIAN CAFFE

LOU MALNATI’S THINGS TO KNOW:

THINGS TO KNOW: Franco’s is the creation of Tuscan-born Franco Fazzuoli, who had three popular Italian restaurants in Phoenix starting in the 1980s before leaving the Valley in 2006 to follow his daughters to New York, where they were studying ballet. While in New York, he opened a wellreceived Italian restaurant in Greenwich Village. Luckily for Arizona diners, Franco came back and is more creative and innovative than ever. Franco’s creates the perfect blend of traditional and progressive dishes with homemade pastas in delicious combinations.

The world-famous Chicago-style deep dish pizza chain has deep family roots including the recipe for their buttery crust that has been passed down from generation to generation. Their signature deep-dish pizzas made from California vine-ripened tomatoes, a flaky crust and Wisconsin cheese from the same dairy purveyor for more than 40 years guarantee a delicious combination of flavors in every bite. Enjoy their pizza at one of their locations in Phoenix or Scottsdale.

OUT OF AFRICA WILDLIFE PARK THINGS TO KNOW: The employees at Out of Africa stress one thing — this place is not a zoo. Rather, it’s an immersive experience that allows one the sensation of being in a real-life African bush safari. Animals from all over Africa and Asia wander about in spacious habitats, and visitors will be surprised by how up-close and personal you’ll be able to get. Take a fence-free photo from the expertly placed photography platforms, and make sure to check out the free-roaming safaris and splendid habitats.

DON’T MISS: Out of Africa boasts the world-renowned Tiger Splash show, where Bengal tigers interact with each other and their keepers in a large aquatic playland. Right next to the Tiger Splash arena, you’ll find the Jungle Hut Eatery, where you can savor offerings like the Black-Bean Chipotle Burger and the Pilgrim Sandwich (gluten-free bread is available upon request). But the best cannot-miss experience: Go into the sloth enclosure and have an up-close and personal encounter with one of the most fascinating and adorable creatures of all time — the two-toed sloth.

THINGS TO KNOW:

THINGS TO KNOW:

Two of the most top-rated attractions and among the most photographed in the Southwest, Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend are wonders all their own. Antelope Canyon, east of Page in Northern Arizona, is a magnificent sight to behold — with its tall winding walls, it’s a monumental sandstone sculpture. Horseshoe Bend’s overlook is a 1,000-foot drop, looking down on the Colorado River with 360-degree views of Paria Plateau and Vermilion Cliffs.

The 98-acre Desert Museum in Tucson includes a zoo, botanical garden, natural history museum, aquarium and art gallery. The Museum’s gardens are home to over 1,200 types of plants including an Agave Garden, Cactus Garden and Pollination Gardens with the Hummingbird Aviary; the Warden Aquarium highlights the region’s freshwater rivers and aquatic life, and the Sea of Cortez; and see animals including mountain lions, prairie dogs, bobcats, javelinas, river otters, bighorn sheep and more.
