Based in Vancouver, Washington, Fort Vancouver stands as a historical site dating back to the time of American Western expansion. PEARSON FIELD The Post Hospital within the site was constructed in 1904-05 and stood as a prominent precedent for military architecture during its time. The hospital was especially active during World War I, being one of the most active hospitals in the United States during the war, serving approximately 21,000 patients. It then went on to serve SE CO HWY-14 LUMB IA WA Y 30,000 troops active in the Spruce Production Division, and the M B I A Civilian Corps following. By 1946, the hospital experiR Conservation I V E enced a lack Rof activity, and didn’t receive sufficient modifications and wasn’t maintained properly. After the construction of Interstate 5, a portion of the hospital was relocated to the Southern end of the building and became the current shape that it stands in today, becoming a long structure, versus a “T” shape. The building is now under the Fort’s Historic Trust and is a prominent building visible from Highway 5. Summarized information is provided Fort Vancouver’s Historic Trust

FORT VANCOUVER - HISTORY Comprised of four major elements, the Historic Fort Vancouver consists of four major sites in the complex. These regions of the fort still stand today, and possess rich historical backgrounds in Vancouver’s past.

1. THE FORT

Home to the London-Based Hudson Bay Company (HBC), Fort Vancouver served as a primary hub for fur trade during the early to mid 1800’s. Vancouver operated as a center for industry, trade, and law, and was greatly supported by the base set up in Fort Vancouver. The fort controlled commerce between Russian Alaska to Mexican California, with many of the laborers residing in “The Village” near the fort. The original fort burned down in 1866, and the current structure standing today is a historical representation of the original fort that can be visited by tourists.

2. BARRACKS

Established in 1849, the United States Army created the Fort as a peaceful settlement in the Oregon Country, following the American Westward expansion. The Barracks served as an important depot during the American Civil War, Indian War, Spanish-American War, Philippine Wars, and World War I. During World War I, the fort was one of the major lumber producers in the nation, and housed many of the laborers during that era. Following World War II, the fort was not a primary station, and the barracks were repurposed and registered as a National Historic Site.

3. McLOUGHLIN HOUSE Named the “Doctor” of Oregon City, John McLoughlin played a significant role in the American expansion to the west, and the establishment of the American identity, amidst political tension between the United States and Britain. He and his wife played a significant role in assisting travelers on the Oregon Trail, and was a Chief Factor at the Fort between 1825-1845, possessing skills in business. The McLoughlin House is the residence of the McLoughlin family, and aims to historically preserve and represent the former Oregon City mayor’s lifestyle and condition of residence.

4. PEARSON FIELD

First used as a recreational polo air field in the early 20th century, the Pearson Air Field served as a practice ground for pilots to practice aviation acrobatic tricks. However, when the United States became involved in World War I, the fort served as a spruce production lumber yard, where they would produce aviation-grade lumber. After the war, the airfield resumed its previous position as a recreational Air Field and acquired its current name “Pearson” after Lt. Alexander Pearson. A notable historic event was when a Soviet Air Craft landed at the field in June 1937.

WHAT IS HOLISTIC MEDICINE? Holistic medicine addresses healing for the entirety of the body, which means that the...

physical... mental... spiritual... aspects of the body are being taken into consideration when healing an individual. Not only does holistic medicine prevent medicine, but it also assists in healing present ailments in the body. Another important element is that holistic healing aims to encourage the body to build strength to heal itself, and implement the natural abilities inherently available in our physiology to stimulate healing without relying on drugs and medication.

energy & rejuvination...

It is commonly said that nature heals, and the site of the Post Hospital is surrounded by nature, with an abundance of trees and shrubbery surrounding the site. With a large number of windows in the present structure, visitors should hopefully sense a feeling of well-being by being surrounded by nature

Ultimately, it is the goal of the site to facilitate healing and well-being, and with that comes a renewed sense of energy and rejuvenation. It is the hope that patients will leave feeling healthier not only due to the amenities provided by the clinic but by the environment produced by the building
