TRANSITIONS THE R E VOLV IN G CHA NG I NG RO OM DESIGN BRIEF TO DESIGN AND BUILD A FULL SCALE TEMPORARY STRUCTURE FOR A PUBLIC BEACH EVENT USING A MAXIMUM OF TWENTY PIECES OF PLYWOOD MEASURING 1200MM X 2400MM. FINAL PRODUCT TO BE DISPLAYED AT EAST COAST PARK BEACH FOR A PERIOD OF FOUR DAYS. DESIGNATED PROGRAM: CHANGING ROOM
DESIGN CONCEPT THE MAIN DRIVING CONCEPT BEHIND THE DESIGN OF THIS CHANGING ROOM IS TO EXPLORE THE MATERIALITY OF PLYWOOD, TO CONSTRUCT A CHANGING ROOM AS A TRANSITION PLACE FOR A VISITOR AS HE CHANGES INTO HIS BEACHWEAR ATTIRE AS SOON AS HE ARRIVES BEFORE STARTING HIS RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES AT THE BEACH. THE SAME APPLIES AT THE END OF THE DAY WHERE HE WILL RETURN TO THE CHANGING ROOM TO TRANSIT BACK TO HIS ORIGINAL ATTIRE BEFORE LEAVING THE PLACE. THUS TO CREATE A SMOOTH TRANSITION ‘CHECKPOINT’ INSTEAD OF CREATING A ‘ROOM’, THE STRUCTURE SHALL HAVE TWO DOORS THAT OPERATES SIMULTANEOUSLY TO FACILITATE CIRCULATION IN BOTH DIRECTIONS. THE EXPRESSION OF THE DOOR IS MADE TO INTEGRATE SEAMLESSLY WITH THE OVERALL LANGUAGE OF THE STRUCTURE. THUS THE STRUCTURE IS MADE UP OF TWO CYLINDERS. WHILE THE OUTER CYLINDER IS STATIC, THE INNER IS ROTATABLE. ROTATING THE INNER DRUM BY 90 DEGREES WILL CREATE TWO OPENINGS AT OPPOSITE ENDS. THE STRUCTURE’S FACADE IS MADE UP OF VERTICAL PANELS SKEWED STRATEGICALLY TO STRIKE A BALANCE BETWEEN PERMEABILITY AND PRIVACY.
