CONCLUSION OF STATISTICS THE RISING TREND OF PEOPLE CHOOSING TO LIVE ALONE IN THE CITY OF SEOUL MAY RESULT IN THE NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS OF SOUTH KOREA AND EVENTUALLY THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE NATION AS A WHOLE. BE IT THE INEVITABLE OCCASION OF RETIRING AND OUTLIVING THEIR SPOUSES OR CHOOSING NOT TO START A FAMILY, THIS HAS CAUSED AN INCREASE IN THE SUICIDE RATES AND AN UNHEALTHY POPULATION PYRAMID SHAPE DUE TO THE LOWER FERTILITY RATE, RESULTING IN A HIGHER DEPENDENCY RATIO. AN EXTRAPOLATION OF THESE STATISTICS CAUSES GREAT CONCERN FOR THE FUTURE OF THE NATION. ACTION NEEDS TO BE TAKEN TO ADAPT TO THESE CHANGING DEMOGRAPHICS AND MITIGATE THEM.

A HEXAGONAL GRID PATTERN IS ADOPTED AS ITS GEOMETRY PROVIDES A LONGER PERIMETER ALLOWING MORE UNITS TO BE INTER-CONNECTED TO EACH OTHER. THIS CREATES A MORE FLEXIBLE LAYOUT PLAN THAT CAN BETTER FIIT THE IRREGULAR SHAPE OF THE SITE. THE TESSELATION OF THIS GRID PATTERN ALSO CREATES MORE CHANCES OF INTERACTION AMONG RESIDENTS LIVING IN THE DIFFERENT TYPOLOGIES OF HOUSING AMIDST THE UNIFIED REGULAR STRUCTURAL GRID. THE BEDROOM CAPSULE IS MADE UP OF ONE REGULAR HEXAGON AS THE BASIC UNIT OF HABITATION. THE LIVING SPACE AND DIMENSIONS OF THE BEDROOM CAPSULE ARE DESIGNED TO SUIT THE SCALE AND PRIVACY OF SUCH A PERSONAL SPACE; WHICH IS IN TURN USED TO DERIVE ALL THE OTHER DIMENSIONS IN THE ENTIRE COMPLEX, FROM THE BASEMENT CARPARK, TO THE COMMERCIAL SPACES AS WELL AS OTHER PUBLIC COMMON SPACES OF ALL HIERARCHIES.

THE CALCULATED DIMENSIONS OF THE SUITABLE LIVING SPACES WITHIN THE BEDROOM CAPSULE DERIVES AND DICTATES THE DIMENSIONS OF ALL OTHER LIVING SPACES WITHIN THE BASIC AGGREGATION UNIT AND CONSEQUENTLY THE GRAIN OF THE TESSELATION PATTERN OF THE URBANSTREET COMPLEX.

WITHIN EACH AGGREGATION, 6 TRIANGULAR CORES FORM THE STRUCTURAL AND INFRASTRUCTURAL BACKBONE THAT SERVES THE 6 PERIPHERAL CAPSULES AND THE CENTRAL LIVING SPACE ON EVERY FLOOR. WITH SUCH A FLEXIBLE STRUCTURAL SYSTEM, THE POSITION OF THE CAPSULES ARE INTERCHANGEABLE AND HENCE, OWNERS ARE FREE TO ARRANGE THE SPATIAL LAYOUT OF THEIR HOMES WITH RESPECT TO PROGRAM, PRIVACY, VIEWS AND CLIMATE RESPONSE.

EACH CAPSULE IS ATTACHED BETWEEN TWO TRIANGULAR CORES. ITS SKELETAL FRAMEWORK PERFORMS THE DUAL ROLE OF PROVIDING STRUCTURAL GRAVITATIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE SPANNED AND CANTILEVERED PORTIONS AND ALSO AS A MEANS TO SUPPORT THE ‘SANDWICH’ LAYERS OF EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL CLADDING AND FINISHES.

SHOWN ON THE RIGHT IS AN ASSEMBLY OF ‘TYPE A’ AGGREGATION, A SIMPLE DWELLING TYPOLOGY FOR SINGLES. BESIDES THE BEDROOM CAPSULES WHICH ARE THE ONLY PRIVATE SPACES FOR THESE SINGLES, SERVERAL COMMON SPACES ARE SHARED WITH OTHER SINGLES SUCH AS THE OPEN DECK BALCONY CAPSULE, CENTRAL LIVING SPACE, AND THE COMMON TOILET CAPSULE. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE INTERNAL STAIRCASE AND ELEVATOR CORE WHICH RUNS THROUGHOUT THE HEIGHT OF ENTIRE COMPLEX, ALL OTHER CAPSULES ARE INTER-CHANGEABLE SINCE SERVICE CORES INCLUDING WATER SUPPLY AND SEWAGE ARE AVAILABLE AT EVERY TRIANGULAR CORE BETWEEN EACH CAPSULE.

PUBLIC SPACES AS AGENT TO FOSTER COMMUNITY SPIRIT DUE TO THE HIGH PROPORTION OF SINGLES LIVING ALONE IN THIS DISTRICT, THERE IS A NEED FOR THESE RESIDENTS TO GET TO KNOW THEIR NEIGHBOURS AND FOSTER A SHARED SENSE OF IDENTITY, RESPONSIBILITY AND COMMUNITY FOR THE GREATER BENEFIT OF EVERYONE. THIS IS PART OF THE STRATEGY OF ACHIEVING THE OBJECTIVE OF ENCOURAGING THESE SINGLE DWELLERS TO LEAVE THEIR PERSONAL CAPSULES AND INTERACT WITH THE REST TO CREATE CROSS-SURVEILLANCE TO EACH OTHER ESPECIALLY FOR THE OLDER GENERATION WHICH MIGHT FACE POST-RETIREMENT DEPRESSION OR HAVE LOST THEIR OTHER HALF. THE SAME APPLIES TO THE YOUNG WORKING ADULTS THAT WILL DETERMINE THE FUTURE OF THE DEMOGRAPHICS OF SOUTH KOREA IN GENERAL. RESIDENTS SHARE MANY COMMON SPACES AT DIFFERENT HIERARCHIES, FROM THE LIVING AND DINING CAPSULES AT THE BASIC AGGREGATION LEVEL AND ALSO AT LARGER SCALES. VARIOUS PUBLIC SPACES FOR RECREATION, COMMERCIAL AND ENTERTAINMENT ARE INSERTED AND WELL-INTEGRATED INTO THE HEXAGONAL GRID PATTERN TO MERGE WELL WITHIN THE LIVING SPACES. SEEN ABOVE ARE PUBLIC FACILITIES SUCH AS THE AMPHITHEATRE, STAGE, PAVILIONS AND THE GYMNASIUM.

SINCE THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE ENTIRE ARCHITECTURAL COMPLEX IS BASED ON A MODULAR SYSTEM, SO IS THE DESIGN OF THE FACADE ELEVATION; AT THE SCALE OF EACH CAPSULE. WITHIN EACH CAPSULE UNIT, INTERNAL CLADDING AND FINISHINGS ARE CONSISTENT AS THEY RELECT THE MOOD AND INTERIOR OF A ROOM. HOWEVEVER THE EXTERNAL CLADDING OF EACH CAPSULE UNIT HAS TWO HALVES.

WITH THE FIRST HALF FACING THE CENTRAL COMMON SPACE, THEY ARE THE INTERIOR FINISHES OF THE LIVING AREA, OFTEN CONSISTING OF A DOOR ENTRANCE INTO THE CAPSULE. THE OTHER HALF OF THE EXTERNAL CLADDING ARE EXPOSED TO THE EXTERIOR, FORMING THE ELEVATION OF THE ARCHITECTURE AND PRONE TO THE FORCES OF THE EXTERNAL CLIMATE AND WEATHER.

SINCE THE CAPSULES MAY BE REARRANGED ACCORDING TO THE INTERNAL PROGRAM, THE FACADE OF EACH CAPSULE CONTRIBUTES TO THE OVERALL ELEVATION LIKE A PIXEL. THE SUMMATION OF ALL PIXELS ORCHESTRATES A SEEMINGLY RANDOM FABRIC PATTERN WITH INTERESTING INSERTION AND VOIDS THAT REFLECT THE LIVING SPACES WITHIN.

ALL CAPSULES HAVE A SIMILAR EXTERNAL CLADDING SYSTEM WITH CLIMATE-RESPONSIVE COMPONENTS TO CONTROL THE AMOUNT OF DAYLIGHT AND WIND ADMITTANCE. THIS INCLUDES THE LIGHT AND VENTILATION DUCTS AS WELL AS THE MONSOON WINDOWS. ALTHOUGH SIZE AND PROPORTIONS MAY DIFFER ACCORDING TO THE ANTHROPOMETRY OF THE INTERNAL PROGRAM, A CONSISTENT LANGUAGE OF AESTHETICS IS MAINTAINED TO ESTABLISH A UNIFIED FACADE ELEVATION SYSTEM.

BILATERAL AND ROTATIONAL SYMMETRY DUE TO THE GEOMETRIC NATURE OF THE PLAN LAYOUT OF THE BUILDING, M&E SERVICES RUN IN THE OVERLAPPING AREAS OF THE ALTERNATING NEIGHBOURHOOD SECTOR. THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING HEIGHT, SERVICES ALTERNATE BEWEEN EITHER SIDES. THUS A BILATERAL AND ROTATIONAL SYMMETRY IS REQUIRED WHICH IN TURN WILL DEFINE THE IMMEDIATE ADJACENT SPACES SUCH AS THE TOILET AND KITCHEN

EXPLODED ISOMETRIC: FORMWORK ASSEMBLY OF PRE-CAST PANELS BASED ON THE STANDARD WIDTH INTERVALS AND VERTICAL HEIGHTS, RESIDENTS DERIVE THE DESIGN OF THEIR PRE-CAST PANELS BASED ON THE PLANNING OF THE SPACES WITHIN AS WELL AS HOW OCCUPANTS USE THE FACADE AND INTERACT WITH THE EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT. THE KNOWLEDGE OF MAKING BREAD HAVE EXISTED SINCE THE EGYPTIAN CIVILISATION IN 3500 BC AND HAVE SINCE SPREAD TO ALL CORNERS OF THE GLOBE, MAKING BREAD THE STAPLE FOOD IN THE DIETS OF MANY CULTURES AND AN IMPORTANT PART OF OUR LIVES. DESPITE REQUIRING THE SAME COMMON INGREDIENTS, THE ART OF BREAD MAKING THROUGHOUT THE MILLENIUMS HAVE CREATED A DIVERSE VARIETY OF BREAD TYPES AS A RESULT OF MODIFICATION AND FINE-TUNING OF CULINARY SKILLS. AT THE BREAD HUB, THE COMMON INGREDIENT FLOUR IS STORED AND MASS MANUFACTURED BY MACHINES INTO DOUGH, WHICH IS THEN DELIVERED TO THE JUNCTION OF DECENTRALIZATION TO BE DISTRIBUTED TO THE FOOD ARTISANS TO BE PERFECTLY CUSTOM-MADE INTO THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF BREAD. THE ARCHITECTURAL JUXTAPOSITION OF THE TWO CONTRASTING DESIGN LANGUAGES REFLECT THE DIFFERENT NATURE OF THIS 2-STEP PROCESS AND THE ENTIRE FORM OF THE ARCHITECTURE COHERENT WITH THE CIRCULATION OF THIS PROCESS.
