Change of epicenter?

Resolutions Highway 199 accident

USGS reports most quakes centered in small area between Reno, Briar BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN Since Nov. 5 – Election Day and the day Azle’s Marching Green Pride placed 13th in state competition – staffers at the Azle News have painstakingly plotted earthquake locations on a map. The chart marks the epicenters of close to 30 earthquakes in the area, the fi rst of which occurred at 9:32.p.m. that fateful Nov. 5 night. It was a Tuesday – press day – and the staff had stayed very late awaiting both election returns and news of the MGP’s quest for the state title.

No sooner had that week’s newspaper been “put to bed” than the news went all a-Twitter, so to speak. Earthquake? Azle? They can’t be serious. They were, and things have not stopped shaking since. Now it looks like that map, which has appeared weekly in the News, may not be very accurate despite the care with which it was prepared. PLEASE SEE USGS, PAGE 2A.

No one was injured Thursday, Dec. 26 around 1 p.m. when a hit-and-run driver in a gray pickup struck the vehicle pictured above in the eastbound lanes of State Highway 199 at Ash Creek Drive. The report was not available at press time, but Parker County Sheriff’s deputies were able to locate the hit-and-run vehicle. Photo by Carla Noah Stutsman

Wright petition rejected, accepted BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN Jacquelyn Wright has served the communities in northwest Tarrant County – including much of Azle – for 24 years as Justice of the Peace Precinct Four. Her current term expires in 2014 and Judge Wright decided to seek another term – but a small error almost cost her a spot on the ballot. It was all resolved, though, on Friday, Dec. 27, as Wright was preparing to sit in a courtroom – on the opposite side from which she is accustomed. Just prior to putting the question before Judge R.H. Wallace in the 96th District Court in Fort Worth, Wright and the Tarrant County Republican Party reached an agreement that allows Wright’s name to be placed on the ballot after all.

The issue? The omission of three critical letters on some pages of the election petition she circulated. Those letters: “G O P.” According to Texas law, judicial candidates must fi le an application for a place on the ballot along with a minimum of 250 signatures on a petition. Wright submitted her application with 351 signatures on Nov. 11, almost a month in advance of the fi ling deadline of Dec. 9. And while Wright’s petition was otherwise properly done, some pages of the petition said “March 2014 primary election” rather than “March 2014 GOP (or Republican) primary election.” In a letter to supporters whose help she sought to correct the situation, Wright said plainly: “I don’t know how it happened,

but it is my bad, I own it, did it, I should have caught it, now I’ve got to fi x it, or my name will not be on the ballot.” Wright said she was notifi ed on Friday, Dec. 13, that her petition was in question. Since then, she had been busy collecting affi davits from some of those who had signed her petition on the pages that did not state she was a candidate in the GOP/ Republican party primary. Although complete details of the agreement were not yet available at press time, Wright said she was happy to learn she’ll be a candidate for the offi ce she has held for so many years. that occurred prior to the installation of the seismographs along with information from two 3.3 magnitude tremors that occurred Dec. 22 and 23. After calibrating measurements and studying waveforms and shaking patterns, Ellsworth has reached a preliminary opinion about the Azle area quakes. “The epicenters of these earthquakes are no longer scattered over an area many miles in dimension, but now cluster in the same zone as the more re-

cent earthquakes located using the local NetQuake stations,” Ellsworth said. “Visual examination of the seismograms for other November-December earthquakes strongly suggests that all of them will be found to have occurred in this same small area.” Ellsworth says he believes it’s also safe to conclude that most of the earthquakes are located in the shallow crystalline basement below the sediments. But, again, this report is pre-

Laviolette is new THAZ chief medical officer Judy Laviolette, M.D., has been named chief medical officer of Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Azle and Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Cleburne. In this position, she will oversee safety and promote clinical excellence throughout all departments at both hospitals. She will report to Harold Berenzweig, M.D., executive vice president and Southwest Zone clinical leader at Texas Health Resources. Earlier this year, Texas Health announced a new triad model at its hospitals, in which clinical leaders and operations leaders work together to ensure quality care. The chief medical officer of each hospital works in a triad leadership team alongside the hospital president and chief nursing officer. “Dr. Laviolette’s range of medical experience as a practicing internal medicine physician, medical school professor, and health system administrator will be a valuable resource for Texas Health Azle and the Texas Health Resources system,” said Bob Ellzey, hospital president. “We envision her helping to strengthen the alignment between the hospital and the medical staff, along with recruiting and retaining talented physicians,” he said. According to Valarie Gilbert, RN, chief nursing officer at Texas Health Azle, Dr. Laviolette’s previous roles in academia will prove to be ben-

eficial as well. “Having served as a medical school professor, Dr. Laviolette has helped develop physicians, and I think her passion and experience in sharing medical research with others will benefit hospital employees and physicians alike,” Gilbert said. With more than 25 years of clinical leadership experience, Dr. Laviolette formerly served as internal medicine/hospitalist section chief for Overton Brooks Veterans Affairs Medical Center, regional chief medical officer for Christus Schumpert Health System and assistant professor of medicine at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, both in Shreveport, Louisiana. Dr. Laviolette graduated from Louisiana Tech University and Louisiana State University Medical School. She completed her residency in internal medicine at Louisiana State University Medical Center. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in business administration. Among her many accomplishments, Dr. Laviolette helped coordinate the evacuation of several New Orleansarea hospitals in response to hurricane Katrina in 2005. Dr. Laviolette plans to apply those life-lessons from hurricane Katrina — along with knowledge gained through her roles in the private, government and academic sectors — to her new role as chief medical officer. “With the goal of continu-

Boy Scout Troop 147 of Azle honored Colton Unger as its newest Eagle Scout on Dec. 21. The Paradise senior is the son of Angel and Thomas Unger. While Troop 147 is chartered through the First United Methodist Church of Azle, the ceremony was held at the Rock Solid Church in Runaway Bay. The Eagle Court of Honor is an event of great importance in a Scout’s life. In order to achieve this high honor, a young man has to fulfill many requirements such as earning a minimum of 21 merit badges, serving his troop in a leadership position and planning and carrying out a substantial service project for his community. Unger’s Court of Honor was held to celebrate his achievement and to recognize his hard work and dedication. He has earned more than 36 merit badges in his Scouting career. With the help of his fellow Troop 147 Scouts, leaders, family and friends, Unger implemented, fabricated, built and installed new bicycle racks at three of the Paradise district’s campuses. This project took more than 200 service hours to complete. Unger had to plan, get approval for and obtain donations of materials to make the project happen.

Parker SO adds drug dog The latest deputy to be sworn in by the Parker County Sheriff’s Office has something no other deputy in the county can boast of. He has four legs. Gobi, a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois, was added to the Sheriff’s drug interdiction unit this week. Gobi’s handler, Deputy Nathan Hagin, has six years of law enforcement experience and was hired by Sheriff’s Office 10 months ago. Hagin has worked previously with Metroplex law enforcement agencies. Hagin and Gobi recently returned from a three-week training course at the Global Training Academy in Somerset, for drug identification and searches. Hagin said the training was highly beneficial and will prove to be an asset to the patrol division, Special Crimes Unit and Criminal Investigations Divi-

sion. The training consisted of vehicle searches, open areas and building searches among others. Gobi and Hagin are currently training for certifications in human tracking, including human searches in cases stemming from abductions, fleeing suspect searches and Alzheimer’s missing person cases. Hagin said he and Gobi have spent the last month getting acquainted and training together as partners. “I am excited about working with Gobi,” Hagin said. “He is extremely eager to work. He has a high drive and loves to perform. During our training, he ran circles around most of the seasoned drug canines. I am looking forward to beginning our new assignment together.” Hagin and Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler said they would like to express their gratitude to Jack Knox for donating

funds to acquire Gobi. Knox is a local rancher and fourth generation Parker County resident. Knox said he offered the funds for training and to purchase Gobi when he became aware of the need and vacancy in the division. “I am glad to be involved with the new program,” Knox said. “I immediately told Sheriff Fowler I would be happy to assist the department. I am looking forward to meeting with Deputy Gobi and Deputy Hagin.” Fowler said Gobi was purchased from Global, which acquires law enforcement dogs from Holland. “Gobi and Nathan are a favorable team,” Fowler said. “We are pleased for their addition. Both deputies will be instrumental in the drug interdiction division.” Gobi will reside with Hagin as a member of the household.

These were the Top 10 sports stories of 2013 by mark k. campbell It was quite a year for Azle sports – on and off fields/ courts/pitches/diamonds/mats. Honorable mention goes to: • the Azle Youth Association winning 5-of-6 Super Bowls • the 400-yard Lady Hornet relay swim team (Makayla Almeida, Ally Simpson, Elvia Bazan, and Sarah Hall) setting a new AHS record in 4 minutes 39.42 seconds at the regional meet • two Hornets making Honorable Mention All-State – Slayton Vaughan in baseball and Johnny Crow in football • Brian Collard lowering the AHS 3200-meter record to 9:42.63 These were the top 10 sports stories of 2013: 10. AHS in the playoffs. In soccer, both squads advanced to bi-district. The boys were runners-up and the girls took third. Both fell in that first postseason round. Hornets used an early winning streak in baseball to lead 5-4A early, then a unique, seventh inning 6-3-4-2 double play secured a victory at Lake Dallas. Coach Anthony Barron’s squad went on to tie for second. AHS won the first bi-district game against Birdville but lost the next two.

Christian Athletic Fellowship – ACS won the volleyball title for the first time. The Crusader boys basketball team, coached by former AHS helmer Robert Hale, took second at the state event, piling up 21 victories along the way. The football team – two-time defending six-man champs – faced Lucas Academy on a frigid Saturday, Nov. 30 at Springtown’s Porcupine Stadium. Directed by Gary Rushing, another former AHS coach, ACS tied the game at 20 in the third quarter. But when the final horn sounded, the Crusaders had fallen just shy of winning a third straight state title, falling 38-32.

course earned rave reviews. It costs nothing to play and is attracting aficionados of disc golf from around the Metroplex. The 18-hole course – each hole a par 3 – begins at the north end of the park parking lot. Others wend around and through the trees near the creek that line the vast open Ash Creek Park meadow. 7. Don Ostermann retires after decades of coaching track at AHS. Coach O. was a no-nonsense leader of teens in track and field and in the classroom. Arriving in 1980, the former 880-yard state champion from Windthorst coached other sports, too, but always track. In the 1990’s AHS cross country teams won six district titles in a row. He directed 33 consecutive Hornet Relays. That stretch included five track resurfacings while he was at Azle. Ostermann took scores of athletes to regional meets and many to state in Austin. 6. Friday, Oct. 17: Wichita Falls Rider 17, Azle 14. Azle hosted the Raiders in what was a vital 5-4A football game. Rider was undefeated in district play and a victory

It’s not everyday a national across Hornet Field – and bold in the second half. It looked like a miracle might news network comes to Azle, fans still huddled in the stands but ESPN, working on a story about former Hornet James Casey, visited Azle in August. Earlier in the summer, Casey signed a $14.5 million contract to play football for the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles. His amazing story of overcoming tragedy while here in Azle and reaching the pinnacle of football enticed ESPN to come to Azle to talk to those who knew Casey as a Hornet. Trainer Todd “Doc’ Urbanek, athletic director (then baseball coach) Scott Anderson, and counselor Derrell Helm were interviewed in the AHS fieldhouse. The ESPN reporters were led around town where they shot footage of Main Street and some old copies of the News. The story aired on the opening night of Monday Night Football, Sept. 9. The local interviews got axed, but plenty of town footage was shown as Azle landed in the national spotlight thanks to a hometown hero.

3. Azle High School (finally!) will get a new gym. Without question, the worst gym among any of AHS’ district rivals in the past years has been right here in Azle. In AHS’ tiny crackerbox, fans must sit on the same side. Voters approved a move up to the new millennium when a bond issue that included a new gym was approved on Nov. 5. The facility will be able to hold 2,000 people – the entire student body for the first time in years – at a cost of $9 million.

2. AHS renovations/construction invigorate all. Things finally began to happen to the Old School Azle High School campus. Before the bond passed, money was spent on making two substantial additions to the campus. Azle got its first-ever indoor facility and had Hornet Field receive a face-lift that included new turf and lights. The indoor facility opened a little after the football season began. At Hornet Field, the brilliant green turf was highlighted with “ghost letters” that faintly spelled out “Hornet Pride.” The new scoreboard was bright and shiny and so was the track. A booming sound system and improved lighting made the stadium seem brand new. Sports teams were not the only ones to use the updated field and indoor facility. In inclement weather, P.E. classes could meet there. Dance squads and the band often ventured inside the protected con4. Azle Christian School fines of the building. So many innocent people killed and maimed And the manhunt after the event was twisted, too. 2014: I’m sure I won’t have anything like that. 2013: That’s what 2001 said. I had to contend with Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old African American who was shot and killed by a neighborhood watch volunteer, George Zimmerman. Who was acquitted. That caused some serious unrest. 2014: I’ll bet. 2013: Then came celebrity chef

New Year’s resolutions results guaranteed…or your money back!

D

o I have your attention? Now if I could only figure out how to get you to send me ONLY $19.99 for this amazing secret, I could keep my resolution of becoming independently wealthy. Most New Year’s resolutions are broken by January 6. Are we really that bad? Lazy? Incompetent? Weak? I think it is more an issue of focus. It is not that we cannot focus, but that we focus on the wrong things. So what I am offering here are two focus-shifters and four strategies that I am absolutely convinced will bring us positive results in 2014. 1. Instead of focusing on the “what” or even the “how,” focus on the “why.” Focusing on the “what” would be something like, “I am going to lose weight.” Focusing on the “how” might be, “I am going to limit my calorie in-

take to 2000 per day and exercise for 30 minutes at least 3 days a week.” Those are great “how’s” to support the “what.” But why? Here’s where we stumble. Focusing on the “why” could be, “I am going to develop a healthier lifestyle so that I can be more healthy and effective in everything LIFE MATTERS I do.” 2. Instead of focusing on Gerry Lewis personal benefits, focus on benefits to others. That good “why” of being more healthy and effective becomes a great “why”

when I am more healthy and effective so that I can be a greater blessing to my family and my world. Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love God completely and the second is to love others. (Matthew 22:37-40). He even commanded us to love others like He loves. (John 15:12) So, now that our focus is adjusted, we need some strategies. 1. Accountability: Enlist a trusted partner to be your “alarm clock” for your “what, how, and why.” It works even better if the accountability is mutual, encouraging each other. 2. Deadlines: Always keeping your “why” at the forefront, develop some short-term markers along the way. “By March 1, I will have lost 8 pounds… or paid off $500 in debt…or written 3 chapters of my book.” The best thing that ever happened to my writing was having a weekly deadline for the newspaper.

Email your letters to

3. Grace: Don’t let failure be your final answer. If you don’t reach a goal by the deadline, don’t give up. Set a new goal, renegotiate your accountability, and start again. Consider it a brief layover on the journey. 4. Prayer: Never underestimate the value of your most powerful accountability partner. Some of the most important “why’s” are too hard to keep in focus when life happens. Each day is a new chance to begin focusing on the reality that your life – with all the “what’s, how’s, and why’s” – matters to God. I can’t guarantee that you will keep your resolutions, but I can guarantee that you will see God at work. And that’s worth way more than $19.99. What were American explorers Lewis and Clark doing Jan. 1 more than two centuries ago?

A

s the new year approached, I wondered about folks 200 years ago in the American West. Then I remembered that the only Americans there that early who wrote about it were Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and their men who explored it 1804-06 at the request of President Thomas Jefferson. For Christmas several years ago my husband and I treated ourselves to the complete set of the journals of their expedition edited by Gary E. Moulton. I looked up the January 1 entries for the three years. Excerpts follow. On Jan. 1, 1804 the expedition was wintering at Camp Dubois across the Mississippi River from St. Louis. The leaders were recruiting men, training them and getting ready. They left St. Louis May 14 of that year. Clark's journal entry is the only one for Jan. 1. I have corrected punctuation for readability, but left his spelling. “Snow about an inch deep....Several men Come from the Country to See

us & Shoot with the men. They bring Sugare &c. to trade. [I don't know why Clark capitalized every "C" and "S."] “I put up a Dollar to be Shot for, the two best Shots to win. Gibson best. The Country people won the dollar. Serjt. Odderway [Ordway] return & bring me Some papers from Capt. Lewis who is [in] Kohokia [Cahokia] on business of importance to the enterprise.” He wrote more. Clark's entry for Jan. 1, 1805 found them at Fort Mandan on the northeast fork of the Missouri River 1,600 miles up it. This was above present Bismarck, North Dakota. “The Day was ushered in by the Discharge of two cannon. We Suffered 16 men with their music to visit the 1st Village for the purpose of Dancing, by as they Said the perticular request of the Chiefs of that village. They called it Fort Clatsop after an Indian tribe in the area. Several years ago while on vacation I was fortunate enough to visit a reconstructed Fort Clatsop on the same spot. first day of the year. He had other entries, but not on Jan. 1 of 1804 or 1805. President Jefferson hired Lewis as his private secretary in 1801. As one will see from the entry, Lewis had a better education than Clark. Although Lewis was younger, Jefferson named him commander of the expedition. Clark's contributions came more from knowing the outdoors. Lewis, Jan. 1st, 1806: “This morning I was awoke at an early hour by the discharge of a volley of small arms, which were fired by our party in front of our quarters to usher in the new year; this was the only mark of respect which we had it in our power to pay this celebrated day. . . .At present we were content with eating our boiled elk and wappetoe [?] and solacing our thirst with our only beverage pure water. . . The fort being now completed the commanding officers think proper to direct that the guard shall as usual consist of one Sergeant and three privates, and that the same be regularly relieved each morning at sunrise.” Lewis continued with ex-

tensive military instructions. Clark's entry for the day was almost an exact copy of Lewis's, but without punctuation. They left Fort Mandan on March 23, made their way across the mountains and floated down the Missouri to St. Louis, arriving Sept. 23, 1806. The expedition, which cost $40,000, was a great success. They traveled over 8,000 miles in 28 months. Only one man died, probably of a ruptured appendix. Only one violent encounter occurred, a clash with Blackfeet on the way home, resulting in two Indians being shot. The Lewis and Clark expedition opened up the trans-Mississippi west to Americans and gave us a claim to the Pacific Northwest. They discovered new plants and mapped the rivers and mountains. Fur trappers, traders, prospectors soon entered the area.

Lt. Gov. Dewhurst orders health services studies

L

t. Gov. David Dewhurst on Dec. 20 delivered charges for the Senate Committee on Health & Human Services to tackle before the 2015 Texas Legislature convenes. Dewhurst, who presides over the Senate, ordered the panel of nine senators to study what is being done by the state to enhance the health of Texas women. He also called on the committee to assess the effectiveness of programs designed to improve mental health for all Texans. The committee will monitor all state-provided women’s health programs, access to preventative services, efforts to reduce unplanned pregnancies and the maximizing of efficiencies, Dewhurst said. Also, the lieutenant governor said, the committee will monitor programs designed to improve mental health and substance abuse services, assess their outcomes and address any

gaps in the system. Perry takes various actions Gov. Rick Perry on Dec. 20 renewed for another month the current drought disaster proclamation for 114 of Texas’ 254 counties. Perry originally issued the proclamation on July 5, 2011. Meanwhile, also on Dec. 20, the federal government approved Perry’s Dec. 13 request for disaster assistance to three central Texas counties — Travis, Hays and Caldwell — for damages attributed to severe flooding that occurred when hard rains hit the region at the end of October through midNovember. In addition to the approval, the U.S. Small Business Administration granted Perry’s request for additional assistance that will allow homeowners, renters and businesses in 11 central Texas counties to apply for long-term, low-interest disaster loans, the governor’s office reported. In other news, on Dec. 19, the

Worst 2013 weather? New Mexico The state that suffered through the most extreme weather in 2013 was New Mexico, according to wunderground.com. By June, 45 percent of the state was in “extreme drought” the worst in America. Elephant Butte Reservoir shrunk to 3 percent capacity. Then rain arrived – too much. In the sixth wettest monsoon season ever, an earthen dam ruptured in Las Vegas, New Mexico and later runoff caused the evacuation of two cities. Elephant Butte Reservoir rose five feet. On July 3, a foot of hail fell on Santa Rosa. Snow plows were used to remove the downfall. A windstorm in Albuquerque contained an 89 mph gust on July 26. Movie Man

Wednesday, January 1, 2014

Clash of the Titans: Poppins vs. Mickey Mouse Before we get to the fi nal offi cial review of 2013, let’s look back on the Best and Worst of the Year. Year in review Overall, ‘13 wasn’t a bad year for movies. Perhaps there were no classics, but the Movie Man awarded just one ‘3’ – very rare. Best of the Year: 10. Hunger Games: Catching Fire (7). It lacked the near-perfection novel adaptation of the first one, but it was still solid. 9. Frozen (7). Once it got going, it got good. 8. Warm Bodies (7). Lots of fun and a different take on the zombie bit. 7. The Heat (7). The funniest movie of the year. 6. Prisoners (8). The Movie Man normally hates revenge movies, but this one was super. 5. Oblivion (8). The Movie Man liked this fi lm more than almost anyone else. The isolation feel and look won him over. 4. Captain Phillips (8). Great moviemaking and a wonder all the way through. 3. The Croods (8). Funny and got better as it went along, too. 2. Despicable Me 2 (8). Really funny and with amazing 3-D. 1. Gravity (9). It was no contest for Best of Year this time around. This movie in 3-D was incredible. Honorable mention (all 7’s): Dark Skies; Oz, the Great and Powerful; Now You See Me; The Butler; Saving Mr. Banks. Worst of Year: 5. Bad Grandpa (5). Gave away most of its laughs in the trailer. 4. RED 2 (5). Far inferior to the original (2010, Movie Man No. 899, 7). 3. Evil Dead (4). An unnecessary remake of a classic that brought nothing new. 2.
