Change of epicenter?
Resolutions Highway 199 accident
USGS reports most quakes centered in small area between Reno, Briar BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN Since Nov. 5 – Election Day and the day Azle’s Marching Green Pride placed 13th in state competition – staffers at the Azle News have painstakingly plotted earthquake locations on a map. The chart marks the epicenters of close to 30 earthquakes in the area, the fi rst of which occurred at 9:32.p.m. that fateful Nov. 5 night. It was a Tuesday – press day – and the staff had stayed very late awaiting both election returns and news of the MGP’s quest for the state title.
No sooner had that week’s newspaper been “put to bed” than the news went all a-Twitter, so to speak. Earthquake? Azle? They can’t be serious. They were, and things have not stopped shaking since. Now it looks like that map, which has appeared weekly in the News, may not be very accurate despite the care with which it was prepared. PLEASE SEE USGS, PAGE 2A.

Wright petition rejected, accepted BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN Jacquelyn Wright has served the communities in northwest Tarrant County – including much of Azle – for 24 years as Justice of the Peace Precinct Four. Her current term expires in 2014 and Judge Wright decided to seek another term – but a small error almost cost her a spot on the ballot. It was all resolved, though, on Friday, Dec. 27, as Wright was preparing to sit in a courtroom – on the opposite side from which she is accustomed. Just prior to putting the question before Judge R.H. Wallace in the 96th District Court in Fort Worth, Wright and the Tarrant County Republican Party reached an agreement that allows Wright’s name to be placed on the ballot after all.
The issue? The omission of three critical letters on some pages of the election petition she circulated. Those letters: “G O P.” According to Texas law, judicial candidates must fi le an application for a place on the ballot along with a minimum of 250 signatures on a petition. Wright submitted her application with 351 signatures on Nov. 11, almost a month in advance of the fi ling deadline of Dec. 9. And while Wright’s petition was otherwise properly done, some pages of the petition said “March 2014 primary election” rather than “March 2014 GOP (or Republican) primary election.” In a letter to supporters whose help she sought to correct the situation, Wright said plainly: “I don’t know how it happened,
but it is my bad, I own it, did it, I should have caught it, now I’ve got to fi x it, or my name will not be on the ballot.” Wright said she was notifi ed on Friday, Dec. 13, that her petition was in question. Since then, she had been busy collecting affi davits from some of those who had signed her petition on the pages that did not state she was a candidate in the GOP/ Republican party primary. Although complete details of the agreement were not yet available at press time, Wright said she was happy to learn she’ll be a candidate for the offi ce she has held for so many years.
