New Year bringing new look Changes looming for Springtown BY NATALIE GENTRY The City of Springtown has kept busy for the last year. 2014 saw the completion and opening of the City’s SplashPad, the improvements to the waste water plant, the construction and opening of the Court Annex building, and improvements to FM 51 among other projects. Springtown residents will continue to see changes throughout the city in 2015 including: Widening of Walnut Creek The city will continue working to widen Walnut Creek near the intersection of State Highway 199 and FM 51. The finalized plans for the project have been approved by the Texas Despite traffic zooming by above, two ducks chill out on a deep and dark December on Walnut Creek. Caution urged regarding school fundraising fraud BY NATALIE GENTRY As the New Year and the new semester begin, Springtown businesses and residents are warned to be cautious of companies claiming to be working with the district's athletic department on fundraisers. The Springtown Independent
School District (SISD) has previously received information from several Springtown businesses about companies such as “Promotional Specialties” and “Spirit Stop” saying they are securing business advertisements as a fundraiser for the district.
Towering Times
There is no such agreement in place. The companies have specifically mentioned sponsorship ads to be displayed on SISD t-shirts that will be thrown to crowds at athletic events. The district doesn’t have any agree-
ment or arrangement with these companies and has not requested these services. The only company that has the authority to promote the district is Five Star Sports. They received approval to solicit sponsors for the fall and spring sports
schedule posters. According to the district, any other company claiming such a privilege should be reported. If in doubt about a sponsorship request contact the SISD at 817-2201700 or the Springtown Chamber of Commerce at 817-220-7872.
The year in review, Part 1 School leadership changes, construction, and crime highlight early 2014 BY MARK K. CAMPBELL As usual, plenty went on in Springtown and the surrounding area last year. Here are the highlights: January A four-year-old girl used her mother's cell phone to call for help after her mother passed out behind the wheel of a pickup on the side of the road in the 300 block of Young Road Jan. 13. The mother was arrested; drug paraphernalia was found in the vehicle. On Jan. 15, the remodel of Brookshire's, Springtown's lone grocery store, was complete and the public jammed the store for specials. After eight seasons coaching the football Porcupines, Coach Brad Turner stepped down. He remained as athletic director for a few months more. Emily Mitchell became the first Springtown High School female to make All-State Choir. In All-State Band competition, SHS' Jacob Matthews, a freshman, was chosen for the Association of Texas Small School Bands. High school principal Chris Pennington announced he was resigning July 1, following the completion of the 2013-14 school year. A Springtown woman, Rachelle Deann Martin, was arrested for a Christmas Day aggravated robbery off Flat Rock Road in Azle. Melissa Westberry, a kindergarten teacher at Goshen Creek Elementary, was one of 32 instructors honored at a Jack Harvey Academy of Exemplary Teachers event at Weatherford College Jan. 24. Poolville's Teri Simpson was also recognized.
February The annual UIL realignment was bizarre. Springtown – now part of 4A with the creation of a higher top classification, 6A – was paired with different schools in various sports. Plus, T-Mobile users should get better phone and Internet service soon. in some sports like football, the Porcupines became part of Upgrades that included new equipment are almost complete on the Region II, a rarity for a school west of the Metroplex. tower that sits on the high school property, an onsite worker said. NEWS DIGEST Out-of-school testing registration For the March administration of the TAKS exit level tests, all registration for out-of-school examinees is online only. TAKS testers – including former TAAS and TEAMS examinees – must register online at www.Texas Assessment.com/taksoos. Examinees can sign up at Springtown High School on the day of testing. Registration began Dec. 8 and runs through Feb. 6 at 5 p.m. The March tests will be administered March 2-5. Because TAKS tests are no longer administered, former TAAS examinees (including former TEAMS examinees) will take the appropriate part of the TAKS exit level English language arts and/or math test(s) on March 2-4. On the day(s) of testing, examinees should arrive at SHS at least 30 minutes before the designated testing time. Test takers should bring a picture ID (driver’s license, DPS ID, military ID, school ID, or resident alien card). No test will be administered without a photo ID. For more information, contact the SHS campus test coordinator Jimmy Steen.

Brookshire’s makes donation to N2N Customer purchases account for bulk of gift By Natalie Gentry Neighbor to Neighbors Food Pantry (N2N) received a $7,800 donation of food and gift cards from the patrons of the Springtown Brookshire’s on Dec. 24, almost doubling last year’s contribution. Store manager Mark Baumann was quick to point out that the store merely acted as a collection hub for shoppers to donate to N2N – and donate they did. Through the purchases of $5 grab bags or donation coupons during the Brookshire’s Annual Spirit of Giving Food Drive, the grocery was able to collect and deliver 480 bags of groceries totaling approximately $3,000, $1,300 worth of gift cards, and

$3,500 in baking hens to the food pantry. Baumann also said that Brookshire’s donated an additional 350 hens as well. “We hope this donation goes a long way to keep N2N stocked during this high-demand time of year,” Baumann said. The food pantry is currently in the middle of its winter food drive and will accept donations in the form of food, cash and clothing. N2N distributes approximately 3,600 pounds of food a month to Springtown families in need. The food pantry cannot legally accept mattresses or couches, and are required to pay to have such items hauled away.

How to Manage a Latex Allergy A latex allergy is an allergic reaction to proteins found in natural rubber latex. The allergic reaction occurs when the body believes that latex is harmful. It will launch an attack on the latex proteins. Mild latex allergic reactions include rash and itching. Severe allergic reactions include difficulty breathing, scratchy throat, wheezing, and cough. Anaphylaxis, or anaphylactic shock, is the most severe allergy to latex. It has the potential to be the most damaging. Symptoms of anaphylaxis include low blood pressure, confusion, fast or slow heart beat, dizziness, and difficulty breathing. Medical attention is required for any case of suspected anaphylactic shock. An allergist can determine the nature of a true latex allergy. A true latex allergy is best prevented by taking certain precautions. Anyone with a latex allergy should avoid products made out of natural rubber latex. For mild allergies to latex such as sneezing, over-the-counter antihistamines such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) may be helpful. For people who have severe allergies to latex such as anaphylaxis, epinephrine (Epi-Pen) should be carried at all times with them in the event of accidental latex exposure. Epinephrine helps the heart beat to push the blood to important organs to support vital functions instead of letting the body shut down.

Many implementing ‘no refusal’ process If you’re planning to celebrate the New Year with a little bubbly – or any other alcoholic beverage – make sure you have a plan to get home safely. The Texas Department of Transportation reminds motorists that law enforcement will be out in force on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day in an effort to reduce crashes and discourage drunk driving.
And that means around here, too. TxDOT’s annual Holiday Impaired Driving Campaign began Dec. 1 and runs through New Year’s Day to promote the importance of planning for a sober ride. The campaign coincides with an increase in law enforcement patrols aimed at reducing the number of impaired
driving crashes in Texas during the holiday season. Numerous law enforcement agencies throughout the state will also implement no-refusal initiatives. Drivers arrested for DWI can face jail time and up to $17,000 in court costs and legal fees. The legal limit for intoxication in Texas is .08 blood or breath alcohol concentration.

SPORTS
5A
These were the top sports stories of 2014 by mark k. campbell Plenty of exciting games and events highlighted the 2014 Springtown sports year. The UIL realignment was weird – SHS was placed in a variety of districts and regions – and Porcupine Stadium was again the site of a huge Junior Olympics track meet. Those events earn Honorable Mention for 2014. Here are the top 10 sports stories of last year: 10. The SHS girls cross country teams advance to regional. It was freakishly warm on Oct. 23 when Springtown cross country teams headed to Decatur’s Reunion Grounds for the district meet. SHS coach Trent Davis, in his first season in Springtown, saw the Lady Porcupines earn a spot in the regional meet with a third place finish. On the sunny course, Sharaia Stout ran the two-mile route in 13 minutes, 38 seconds to pace the team. For the boys, Alan Tarango also qualified. The Springtown racers competed at Lubbock’s Mae Simmons Park on Halloween. The season ended there, but no SHS squad had made it that far in eight years. 9. Lady Porcupines advance in volleyball. SHS rebounded from a slow start – losing game one 20-25 – to take the last three contests and the playoff trophy 3-1 with convincing 25-15, 25-19, 2515 wins at the Castleberry High School gym. Next came the Area round where Vernon awaited. The squads met in Bowie and the Lady Porcupine season ended with a tough 25-23, 15-25, 2725, 17-25, 12-15 loss. Springtown finished 22-17 on the season and three seniors earned postseason MVP honors: Brooklyn Dauenhauer was the Most Valuable Hitter, Kendyl Dean the Most Valuable Libero, and Sydney Farris the Most Valuable Setter. 8. Baseball returns to the playoffs. Thanks to going undefeated at home in District 6-3A play, the Porcupine baseball team finished third and locked down a postseason berth. SHS went 4-1 in the second round of district action. In bi-district, the foe was Graham and the squads played home and home. The first game sent the Porcupines to the Steer’s diamond where Springtown lost a close 2-1 contest. Ryan Hester threw well, but SHS struggled hitting. Back at the Springtown field, the Steers won the series. 7. Lady Porcupine softball heads to the postseason. After finishing third in dis-

From that group, two – Savannah Sutton and Springfield – qualified for the state meet in Austin in the triple jump and 110 hurdles, respectively. At the UT-Austin track, Springfield took fourth on the warm, humid day, in 14.41 – his fastest time of the year. Sutton took eighth, sailing 36 feet, 2 inches. 2. Kolyn Waldrop earns Springtown’s first-ever medal in state wrestling. After winning his third straight district title, Waldrop, a senior, was one of seven regional qualifiers for Springtown. At Frisco for regional bouts, Waldrop took second and punched his state ticket. At state – now in Garland – Waldrop won the bronze, losing only to the eventual gold medal winner. Competing in the 220-pound class, Waldrop beat competitors from Wylie and Corpus Christi Moody. Several Springtown athletes spent their Spring Break at Corpus Christi – competing at a state event. Five Lady Porcupines qualified for the elite powerlifting event. Competing against 78 other teams, Springtown finished fourth, missing third by just two points. Melissa Perrone took second overall individually. Lizeth Melendez and Martha Chavez were bronze finishers. With Tabitha Rogers and Jocelyn Pando also representing Springtown, SHS and coach Missy Castro had a memorable year, one loaded with medals and plaques collected along the way. 3. Sloppy play behind the Lady Porcupines’ ace Kelsey Huff – who permitted only four hits – hurt SHS. Still, it was another venture into the playoffs for the everimproving Lady Porcupine softball squad. 6. Girls basketball team wins in playoffs. Coach Susan Croft’s hoops squad came out of 6-3A as runners-up with scoring machine Brooklyn Dauenhauer leading the way; she reached 1,000 career points in the regular season finale victory over Fort Worth Diamond Hill-Jarvis. It took a while to play bidistrict. Not once but twice was the Graham bi-district game delayed because of weather. Venues at Jacksboro and Poolville both iced out. The contest was finally conducted back in Jacksboro and Springtown won, 45-34. SHS had a nice lead then thwarted a late Graham rally. Dauenhauer scored 17 points and Katelyn Mainord had 14 in the victory. The season ended in the Area round in Weatherford against Stephenville on Valentine’s Day. 5. That win put the Porcupine in the third place match against a familiar foe from Frisco Centennial – the same guy that stopped Waldrop from winning Region 2. In Garland, Waldrop steadily picked up points and eventually won 9-3 and claimed SHS’ first-ever wrestling medal. He finished with a sterling 34-4 record. 1. Football. Porcupine football was tumultuous long before the season began. Longtime coach Brad Turner stepped down in January. He and his All-State QB son Landry would end up in Graham. The hunt for a new coach led to Eastland where Brian Hulett was hired. His first game as the Porcupine leader was played in Springtown and SHS thumped Decatur, 49-21. As predicted by Texas Football magazine, the Porcupines reached the postseason, picking up impressive wins over Vernon and Alvarado along the way. Springtown stood 3-3 at one point but won its final four games – one being a late victory at Alvarado, 27-24 – to head into the playoffs on a winning streak. Hulett had been rotating Dillon Springfield and Kaleb Chesney at QB. But the latter broke his hand and, eventually, Austin Bauman was pulled up so Springfield’s multi-position talent could be utilized. The bi-district game was played in Saginaw on a cold evening against Sanger. Too generous early – the Indians scored 21 first quarter points off short fields – Springtown eventually fell 31-21, outscoring their rival 21-7 in the final half. In addition, several visitors set new meet marks. A trip to the regional meet for the boys 4x400 relay team was dashed when a tossed baton

Go Cowboys! (It seems to mean so much to so many)
I
am living proof that you can overcome an addiction. I’m Mark and I was once a die-hard Cowboys fan. Hi, Mark! I spent 33 years cheering and hair-pulling as the antics of a group of similarly dressed men all adorned with stars on their helmets dictated my Sundays (and sometimes Mondays). I constantly bought Dallas Cowboys stuff: toboggans (ski caps to you Yankees); team posters at McDonald’s: cheap Hutch helmets; socks; t-shirts; jerseys (I loved Calvin Hill); bumper stickers; drinking glasses – you name it, I bought it. On game day, my entire family crowded around the TV, whooping and hollering. I was joyous when the Pokes won and depressed when they lost. I hated the teams that always man-
aged to beat Dallas back in my childhood: the Cleveland Browns, the St. Louis Cardinals, and, especially, the Washington Redskins. All I thought about was the Cowboys. I even considered moving my wedding date because on Aug. 9, 1975, Dallas played an exhibition game. Truly, I was addicted to the Dallas Cowboys. Then came Feb. 25, 1989. Jerry Jones bought the Cowboys and the first thing the guy from Arkansas – Arkansas! – did was fire Coach Tom Landry. The greatest football coach that ever lived, the one who gave my family such joy for decades, was given no chance for any sort of public farewell. It was just: “Don’t go away mad, just go away.” Well, at age 32, I was mad and I
went away all right, from my greatest passion, from my family-bonding experience – forever. The most devoted Dallas fan that ever lived turned off the TV and ON YOUR never looked MARK back. Oh, at first, Mark K. Campbell there were hordes of us making that proclamation. “I’ll never root for the Cowboys again!” And what fun it was to see Dallas lose so many games in those early Jones years.
But then came the wild Super Bowl successes of the early- and mid-1990’s and suddenly there were far fewer of us anti-Cowboys, Long Live Tom Landry! faction. The bandwagon got loaded down as time (and winning) healed a lot of wounds. But not mine. Oh, eventually I quit hating the Cowboys; my angry passion melted away, too. I reached my current position on the team: I just don’t care. If I’m jogging on a Sunday afternoon, I’ll listen to the game. I’ll flip over to the Cowboys for my postchurch nap or plop down and watch it when visiting friends. Because I’m a big radio listener to The Ticket, I am as up-to-date as ever on Cowboy activities. My life just isn’t dominated by such information.
My late dad never quit rooting for his beloved Dallas squad. He always said he cheered for the uniform, not the players or behind the scenes folks. I just could/can not do that. Yet, I hope the Cowboys beat the Lions in this week’s playoff game. I remember what it was like to be enthralled and jacked up with anticipation for big games. If Dallas wins, lots of folks around here will be happy. That’s a good thing. Maybe the Pokes will even win the Super Bowl. (Even though I think the Cowboys party ends in Green Bay Jan. 11.) Just don’t expect to see any sort of celebratory sticker on my pickup – unless it’s of Landry’s classic fedora. Mark K. Campbell is the Epigraph editor and, for some reason, his Rangers’ fervor has waned, too.

ife in the American West was reshaped by a series of patents for a simple tool – barbed wire – that helped ranchers tame the land. Patents for improvements to wire fencing were granted by the U.S. Patent Office, beginning with Michael Kelly in November 1868 and ending with Joseph Glidden in November 1874, that shaped the history of this tool. The swift emergence of this highly effective tool as the favored fencing method changed life in the wild west as dramatically as the rifle, six-shooter, telegraph, windmill, and locomotive. Texas in 2014: A very big year for job creation
T

Drawing on figures calculated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Texas Workforce Commission on Dec. 19 reported employers added 34,800 seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs in November, for a total of 441,200 jobs added since last year. “This broke the state’s previous record set in October, as the state’s annual job growth expanded to a new high for a fourth month in a row,” according to an agency news release, which also said, “even more Texans were employed in November as the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 4.9 percent from 5.1 percent in October, and down from 6.1 percent a year ago.” “The Texas economy continued its record-breaking expansion, providing job oppor-

Notably, the Midland Metropolitan Statistical Area had the lowest November unemployment rate in the state at 2.3 percent; the Odessa MSA had the second-lowest at 2.8 percent; and the Amarillo MSA placed third-lowest at 3.3 percent.

Into the Woods only occasionally bewitching A while back, we analyzed the difficulty of bringing a popular stage production to the big screen. Plenty of adaptations fail – Dreamgirls, Nine (the latter directed by Rob Marshall who made Into the Woods)– while others made the trip and then some – Cabaret, Chicago (the latter also by Marshall). Into the Woods has been a colossal success since its debut in 1986 and its Broadway arrival in the fall of 1987. (Unfortunately for Into the Woods, it came out in the same awards season as the juggernaut The Phantom of the Opera.) Before we determine Into the Woods’ cinematic release, let’s look back on 2014. Best and Worst The year was a decent one for movies – not great, but OK. Here’s the best and worst of 2014: Best 1. Edge of Tomorrow (8) 2. Gone Girl (8) 3. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (8) 4. The Lego Movie (8) 5. Godzilla (7) 6. Interstellar (7) 7. The Equalizer (7) 8. X-Men Days of Future Past (7) 9. Guardians of the Galaxy (7) 10. Captain America: Winter Soldier (7) Honorable mention Fury (8) 300: Rise of an Empire (7) Mr. Peabody and Sherman (7) Worst 1. Transformers: Age of Extinction (3) 2. Neighbors (3) 3. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (4) 4. Muppets Most Wanted (4) 5. Maleficent (4) Dishonorable mention Purge: Anarchy (4) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (5) The Expendables 3 (5) Guilty pleasures: Dracula Untold (6); Hercules (6)
Most offbeat: Grand Hotel Budapest (6) Rated too highly: Fury Rated too lowly: Guardians of the Galaxy Biggest surprise: Edge of Tomorrow Biggest disappointment: Interstellar (yet on Best list) Best scene: Quicksilver speeding around in X-Men Days of Future Past to Jim Croce’s “Time in a Bottle” The plot A baker (James Corden) and his wife (Emily Blunt) want to have a child, but a witch (Meryl Streep) put a curse on Corden’s father and mother – a curse that extends to Corden who can have no child. Unless, that is, the couple can in three days fetch four items for Streep: a red hood, a white cow, a golden shoe, and blond hair. Corden and Blunt wander into the dark woods and come upon (at varying times) Red Riding Hood, Jack of beanstalk fame, Rapunzel, and Cinderella. Each has what the couple needs but attaining the items proves to be tricky. While the four fairy tale stories play out, the characters weave in and out of the woods and the couple’s quest. Then, when it looks like everything is hunky-dory, a way-

Hello my name is Fancy and I believe I’m a 1 year old Pit Bull Terrier mix. I’ve spent most of my life in the Azle Shelter and I’d really like a forever home for the New Year. I am a sweet, quiet, shy girl who gets along with everybody. I will sit or lay in a corner or under a chair until I get comfortable with my new surroundings and family. I do require a fenced in yard to play in when I’m out and I love to play with most dog toys.
VAL
Hello to you! My name is Val and I am about 10 months old. I am a sweet boy who is reserved and relaxed. I typically take a few minutes to feel comfortable in a new situation or with a new person, but then my sweet personality starts to shine through. If you are interested in adopting me, stop by and meet me in the shelter’s “get to know me” room. I look forward to seeing you soon!
