ICY NEW YEAR

Finalists in search for police chief down to three Decision expected by Feb. 1 by carla noah stutsman The quest to name a new Chief of Police for the city of Azle is nearing its completion with the selection of three finalists for the position. Since former chief Randy Reed’s abrupt retirement in May 2014, the Azle Police Department has operated under the leadership of Interim Chief Darrell D. West. A 24-year-plus veteran of the Azle PD, West was the ranking lieutenant in the department when he was asked to fill in as chief on June 4. Last fall, City Manager Craig Lemin began the regional search for Azle’s next police chief, and rather quickly found himself looking at 32 well-qualified applicants. “We reduced that number to 15 after our initial review, and those 15 were sent supplemental questions and information forms,” Lemin said. “Upon reviewing those, we selected nine to move to the next step. Each of those nine applicants completed a DiSC Profile Assessment.” The DiSC Profile, according to Lemin, is a personality assessment – not a test, he emphasizes – that provides insights into natural and adaptable behavioral styles in relation to the workplace, leadership, management, and other situations and environments. Some Internet research found that the letters in the DiSC acronym stand for “dominance,” “influence,” “steadiness” and “conscientiousness” – four distinctive personality styles or profiles. Each personality style exhibits its own unique set of strengths as well as areas in which the individual must expend additional effort to supplement those strengths. DiSC purports to be “the leadThe New Year arrived with a b-r-r-r-r for man, beast, and hackberries. The final step in the process to identify the next Azle chief was scheduled to take place all day Wednesday, Jan. 7, Lemin said. “It will be an all-day assessment center designed to identify the person best suited to be the next police chief for the city of Azle. It will include six exercises designed to test the finalists’ skills and management styles,” Lemin said. “The assessors will be Chief Gary Johnson from Roanoke PD, Assistant City Manager Lawrence Bryant, and myself. We should be able to select the lone finalist by the end of the week.” Once that lone finalist is selected, a more thorough background investigation will be conducted. Lemin will then negotiate a salary with the finalist who will be offered the position contingent upon successful completion of drug and psychological testing, he said. “We hope to have new chief in place around Feb. 1.” The trio of candidates is: Rick Pippins Pippins is captain of administrative services with the Odessa Police Department. He has 31 years of law enforcement experience. He has been a supervisor for the past 22 years and has experience in all aspects of law enforcement. Azle PD arrests 4 drunk drivers on New Year’s Eve by carla noah stutsman In spite of the usual warnings leading up to New Year’s Eve, one thing is clear: Some people are going to drink and drive. Azle police officers arrested four of them – likely only a fraction of those navigating the roadways after imbibing – all within a period of two hours and 20 minutes in the wee hours of Jan. 1. At 1:19 a.m., Cpl. Jordan Lashbrook arrested Justin Scott Phelps, 25, of Weatherford in the 700 block of Southeast Parkway. Phelps posted $5,000 bond for the class B misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated (DWI) and was released from the Azle jail later on Jan. 1. A half-hour later at 1:51 a.m., Officer Alex Kuenzle arrested 37-year-old Mary Alice Randall of Hurst in the 400 block of Northwest Parkway and charged her with the class B misdemeanor of DWI.

Year in review covers the goings-on in our small Texas town n YEAR, FROM PAGE ONE.

August A woman, Julie Witt, was jailed for embezzlement from a Weatherford attorney. She had been sentenced earlier for the same crime at Azle’s A&M Gardens in 2007-08. An earthquake activity kiosk was installed in the lobby of the Azle Memorial Library. The library saw its 1,000,000th patron; it opened in March 2009. An Aug. 16 afternoon thunderstorm dropped over an inch of rain and blew down trees with a 65 mph downburst. A 13-year-old girl from Palmer was killed in a one-car rollover on Farmer Road. The AISD approved a budget of $51,791,055 for the 2014-15 school year. The “affluenza” father, Frederick Anthony Couch, was charged with impersonating a Lakeside police officer. A 14-year-old boy was charged with arson by Pelican Bay police. The “ice bucket challenge” craze reached Azle as several groups doused themselves with cold water to raise funds for ALS, aka Lou Gehrig Disease. September Silver Creek United Methodist Church held its 50th Lord’s Acre. The annual Sting Fling festival avoided its usual wet weather – it did mist some, however, and was cool. Neola Louis Robinson was

sentenced to 18 years for killing Shorty Robinson and burying him in their front yard in 2010. A positive sample of West Nile Virus led to ground spraying for mosquitoes. The drought continued to take its toll on Eagle Mountain Lake; Tarrant Regional Water District shut down the boat ramp at Twin Points – the deepest one on EML. A kidnapping attempt at a local laundry mat was foiled by bystanders. October The biennial Library Gala, conducted at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, raised $135,000. The annual National Night Out was held Oct. 7. The Hornet football team crushed Saginaw Chisholm Trail to win Homecoming, 567. The city of Azle’s ISO – Insurance Services Office, Inc. – rating was lowered to a 4, an improvement from the prior 6. The change should lower residents’ insurance rates. An atheist group, the Freedom From Religion Foundation, forced the postponement of a pair of planned assemblies at AHS and Forte Junior High, noting “serious constitutional concerns.” In response to the cancellations, a scheduled youth rally was conducted at The Church at Azle went on. An arrest in Pelican Bay confiscated 31 firearms.

November The first Movie in the Park was Maleficent, and an estimated 500 to 600 folks watched it in Central Park. The Hornet football team clinched the district championship with an overtime victory over Rider in Wichita Falls. It was Azle’s first title in 20 years. Three Azle athletes signed scholarships with Division I schools – Brooke Smith (Nebraska, volleyball); Tommy Kay (UTA, baseball); and Makenzi Harris (Texas Tech, softball). The Azle Arts Association Popcorn Players produced its 100th play, a comedy: The Farndale Avenue Housing Estates Towns-women’s Guild Dramatic Society’s Production of A Christmas Carol. The AISD began broadcasting district activities online through highschoolcube.com. On Nov. 29 in Odessa, the winningest Azle football team in history – 11 victories – saw its season end with a 17-10 loss to Canutillo in the 5A, Division 2 regional clash. Azle Christian School won its third state six-man football title in the last five years, scoring a whopping 114 points en route to a 114-64 win over Granbury Cornerstone in Springtown.

Homes on Dec. 7 benefitted Project Graduation 2015. Azle graduate Andrew Greer performed his Angel Band Christmas Tour at Ash Creek Baptist Church with collected food goods donated to the Community Caring Center. By a vote of 3-2, the Pelican

Bay Volunteer Fire Department found its contract with the town terminated. Then the ‘Bay city council voted to contract with the Briar VFD. AHS Drama’s production of The Wizard of Oz met with great success as thousands of local residents saw it.

All 1,050 children on the Lions Club Angel Tree were adopted. Popular businessman and former Azle Area Chamber of Commerce President Brad Bettis was shot to death Dec. 21 in an altercation deemed “domestic in nature” by investigators.

December Caitlin Glenn was named the city’s new Economic Development Director. The annual Christmas Parade was conducted Dec. 6 after the tree lighting on Main Street. The Christmas Tour of

Fire destroys Bonita Oaks home Homegrown by carla noah stutsman A home on Mil Oaks Drive in the Bonita Oaks subdivision off Nine Mile Bridge Road is a total loss after a devastating fire. Temperatures were in the low 20s when smoke alarms woke the occupants about 3 a.m. Monday morning, Jan. 4, according to Tarrant County Deputy Fire Marshal Keith Ebel. “Fortunately, the smoke detectors woke them up and

everyone got out with no injuries,” Ebel said. “Right now, we think the fire may have started near the back patio area, and we don’t believe it was intentionally set.” Firefighters with the Azle and Lake Worth Fire Departments, as well as volunteer firefighters with Eagle Mountain Fire and EMS, La Junta Volunteer Fire Department/Parker County ESD1

and Briar-Reno Volunteer Fire Department worked in sub-freezing temperatures throughout the night and into mid-morning putting the fire out, Ebel said. The American Red Cross also responded to the scene with canteen and rehab services for firefighters as well as emergency lodging and other assistance for the occupants of the home.

Water Main Break

Jeff and Lori Griffin of Azle announce the engagement of their daughter Leiah to Chance Terry, son of Bob and Johnie Terry of Springtown. The couple will be married Jan. 30 at Heritage Baptist Church in Weatherford. Chance graduated from home school in 2008 and is employed at Auto Nation in Fort Worth. Leiah also graduated from home school in 2008 and is currently employed at Cuttin’ Loose hair salon in Azle. After honeymooning, the couple will reside in Fort Worth.

Tarrant burn ban expires A break in a main water line near the intersection of West Main Street and Industrial Avenue over the weekend of Jan. 3-4 meant that many businesses in central Azle were without water for a few hours Monday, Jan. 5 while city of Azle utility maintenance employees made repairs. Above (l-r): David Wilkerson looks on as Cameron Feder cuts the damaged pipe with a chainsaw and Chris Cornish stands ready to help. The ban on outside burning in Tarrant County has expired – at least for now. The Tarrant County Fire Marshal’s Office issued a reminder that if you conduct an outside burn you must: • contact the Tarrant County Fire Marshal’s Office at 817-

838-4660 before you do to make sure it is an allowable burn day. • stay with the fire at all times while it is burning; • only burn from sunup to sundown – no burning is allowed at night; • have water and cell phone available;

• consider your neighbors when burning by making sure the smoke does not blow toward a neighbor’s home; • be extremely careful • only burn brush, tree limbs, grass clippings and leaves. Burning trash or building materials is not allowed.

Decades of dedicated customer service locally Two women who are all about Azle and the surrounding area own Eagle Mountain Realty. Gwen Gibbons, Broker, and Debra Jenkins, Realtor, have decades invested locally and take part in just about every Azle function you can name – from fundraisers to chairing special events and serving on boards. The duo bring that dedication to their business as well. Eagle Mountain Realty is a full-service real estate brokerage dedicated to customer service. “Our goal is to make every transaction – whether buying or selling – as stress-free and pleasant as possible,” they say. Both women have a wealth of knowledge about the area. Gwen has lived in Azle for 28 years and Debra has been here 18. That experience is highlighted in their tag line: “It’s where we live. It’s who we are.” It’s a great time to get involved with real estate: “We are seeing unprecedented growth in the real estate market. NOW is the perfect time to buy and sell.” The duo focus on personal service. “Compassionate care and treating customers like trusted friends sets our agency apart.” Since Eagle Mountain Realty is a boutique agency – not some large corporation – clients are not just numbers to Gwen and Debra.

“We surround ourselves with professionals in the legal and lending fields. We have partners that specialize in helping buyers qualify for loans,” they say. Debra and Gwen were formerly with Coldwell Banker and Gwen received her broker’s license in June. Eagle Mountain Realty opened in August. Together, Gwen and Debra have almost 10 years of experience in the real estate market. Debra was named Azle’s favorite Realtor in 2012. They were a hit right off the bat. The duo closed over $2 million in transactions in their first seven weeks. There’s a reason. “We want to make every aspect of buying and selling a smooth process; that’s why we work only with the best in the business,” they say. Gwen and Debra add, “Our many satisfied clients will attest to the fact that our marketing strategies get results.” When convenient, call them at 682-8411235 or stop by Eagle Mountain Realty at 8401 Jacksboro Highway #145 in Lakeside Plaza to get things going. They will help you whenever you need it. After all: “We’re available to serve clients according to THEIR schedules.”

Senior Spotlight by sue turnipseed Trust you had a very good Christmas and are looking forward to a great year in 2015. Do plan to meet friends near your age at the Azle Senior Center. Many Azle senior citizens meet in the B J Clark Community Center at 609 Southeast Parkway Monday through Friday of each week for fellowship and a nutritious meal. The cold weather sometimes brings icy roads and for safety reasons the Center may close. Any day the Fort Worth Independent School District takes a bad weather day and closes the Center will also be closed. Check the school closings on bad days and remember: “safety first.” Friday, Jan. 9 is Food Bank Day and Pet Food Day, so make sure you check with Betty Porter to see if you have qualified to receive food distribution. All leftover staples will be placed as prizes for Food Bank Bingo on the Tuesday after Food Bank Day. Phillis Nelson, dietitian at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Azle, will bring tips on ways to improve what we eat and how to prepare the food in a more nutritious and tasty way. January birthdays and anniversaries will be celebrated Jan. 14. The lunch menu for that day is Creamy Garlic Chicken Thigh with a banana, cake, and ice cream for dessert. After the rich food eaten during the holidays now is a good time to start an exercise program. There is exercise four days a week so call 817-444-0070 to find out the types of programs offered. The cost is your commitment to the classes you desire to begin or continue.

I’m the guy who refuses to type “waiting 4 U 2 get thru” when sending a text message to the Bride. Instead, it is “I’m waiting for you to get through.” With the proper capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. I’m also the guy who will delete a Facebook post or Tweet if there’s a tiny thing amiss. Then rewrite the entire message. I’m a dinosaur, of course. Why waste time with all that proper junk when you can get your message and meaning across much quicker? Life is racing by; why spend time on spelling out words when you can be understood faster and more simply? Young me would have agreed. when he stood staring at a VCR blinking 12:00. There are still a few dinos around, but we’re disappearing like WWII vets. So, to keep current, I beON YOUR gan 2015 with MARK some modern research Mark K. Campbell word using the second greatest web site on earth, dictionary.com. (The best is IMDb.com [internet movie data base].) Dictionary.com listed 11 words that jumped in popularity in 2014 over 2013. “Selfie” is old news, homie. One of ‘14’s grooviest words was “dystopian.” It was used in every Young Adult novel/movie review; it means “a society characterized by human misery: squalor, oppression, disease, and overcrowding.” You couldn’t swing a dead Katniss without hitting dystopian last year. Here are some other words that came into big time use in 2014, and you can certainly quickly tell why with some of them. Let’s play word association!

“Ebola” – well, duh, Dallas and the certain end to mankind. “asphyxiation” – it jumped 9,800 spots in popularity after the Eric Garner police officer incident in New York City. “anaconda” – depending on your age, this was either the snake that “ate” a guy who donned a special suit on the Discovery Channel or a song by Nicki Minaj. They kinda have two different meanings... “redskin” – American Indians and the Washington D.C. professional football team kept this word in 2014 use far more than normal. “maleficent” “insurgent” “interstellar” – all were movie titles and all jumped substantially in use. All these are real words. Naturally, new words get introduced “officially” into dictionaries annually. Folks around here might recognize one: “fracking.” But with social media spewing out acronyms at an interstellar pace, the definition of “word” is weakening. So, I looked a couple up. SMH means “shaking my head.” And, ICYMI is short for “In Case You Missed It” – which I clearly did. Poor dinosaur me...LOL. Mark K. Campbell is the News editor and, OMG, the newsroom can get pretty dystopian on Tuesdays.

Letter to the Editor Old Dallas Cowboys got rid of its ‘miscreants’ Dear Editor: With much amusement of the editor’s column in last week’s News [On Your Mark, Dec. 31 “Go Cowboys! (It seems to mean so much to so many)”] in musing about the Dallas football team in stalwart coaches and players of past and present day teams, he was a tad off the mark. But not much. In the ‘60’s, ‘70’s, and ‘80’s, the Dallas team was coached by a man – Tom Landry – who cherished family values and embodies work commitment. Unfortunately, that team had its share of social misfits, too. All-star receiver Lance Rentzel and kicker Rafael Septien were arrested for lewd conduct in exposing themselves to girls. Thomas Henderson snorted cocaine on the sidelines while playing in the Super Bowl.

But give credit to where credit is due: At least Coach Landry jettisoned those players and others of that ilk. And if that wasn’t bad enough, somehow, the Dallas Team was pulled up to heady heights of becoming “America’s Team.” Fast forward to present day ownership and players. You have an owner in Jerry Jones who seeks out to athletes on a Who’s Who of feckless behavior, present day players who have more stats on a police blotter than a sports page. Despite crimes ranging from manslaughter, trafficking and use of illegal drugs, Cowboy Michael Irvin – a twice convicted felon – is in the Ring of Honor. Please, Cowboy fans who cheer for and laud Dez Bryant as a decent person and a great player...he is so narcissistic that he leaves a game before it’s over because it wasn’t going his way. (And there’s that assault on his mom...) The impassivity of the fans of such behavior by these miscreants sure shows the social mores of the pres-

ent day as opposed to the ethos of the people in the past. Welcome to the 21st century. “How, ‘bout them Cowboys!” Give me a king-sized break.

Little-known mountain man was more successful than most

I

learned years ago that sometimes famous people are not as successful as quiet, littleknown ones. My story this week deals with a mountain man that I only just discovered, and I've read a lot about mountain men. Andrew Drips, born in Ireland in 1790, grew up in Pennsylvania. After serving in the War of 1812, he went to the West and by 1820 joined a Missouri Fur Company. In a couple of years he was a partner and lived on the Missouri River north of Council Bluffs, Iowa. From 1825 to 1829 he led expeditions to trade with the Pawnee Indians. He married an Otoe Indian woman whose name was changed to Margaret. She bore him four children whom they named Charles, Jane, Katherine, and William. By 1830 he joined the American Fur Company, owned by John Jacob Astor. One man in the expedition kept a diary who wrote that 50 men in the group traveled 20 miles each day. Drips remained in the mountains that fall and hunted beaver on the Green River, wintering in what is now Cache

THE

Valley in Utah. By June 1831 he was in St. Louis and brought 20 Flathead Indians with him. He attended the mountain men's rendezvous on the Green River in June 1833 with 200 others. Great rivalry existed between the Rocky Mountain Fur Company and the American Fur Company, and this was evident at the gathering as they tried to divide the hunting territory between them. By August, 1834 the latter bought out and absorbed the former. Trapper Lucien B. Fontenelle once camped with Drips where they feasted on rice and plum pudding. A lot of Indians camped near them. Christopher “Kit” Carson came to the rendezvous of 1835 on the Green River and got into a duel with one of Drip's men, a Frenchman named Shunar. While at the rendezvous, Drips got a letter from Fontenelle to welcome two men who were traveling to the West, missionaries Samuel Parker and Dr. Marcus Whitman. Whitman returned to the East after this trip, married a wife named Narcissa Prentiss, and in 1836 brought her to

Missouri, Platte, and Arkansas Rivers he met John James Audubon who was getting material for his paintings. Drips’ first wife had died in 1846, and he married a half-French and halfSioux girl, Louise Geroux. They had five children to whom they also gave English names: Andrew Jackson, Thomas, Anna, Julia, and George. In 1848 Drips was selected to be in charge of Fort Laramie (in present Wyoming) owned by the American Fur Company. However, in the spring of 1849 the fur company sold out to the federal government, and he was out of a job. The fur trade was winding down as well because beavers had been trapped out of most of the mountain streams. The last rendezvous took place much earlier in 1840. Even so, Drips stayed in the mountains. Chouteau and his company built a Fort John at Scotts Bluff in western Nebraska, and Drips managed it from 1851 to 1852. Then he moved to Kansas City, Missori where he lived until 1857. He returned to the mountains that year and ran a trading post on the North Platte

in Wyoming about 20 miles downriver from Fort Laramie. He lived there off and on or in Kansas City until his death September 1, 1860. Historian Harvey Carter wrote that Drips and Fontenelle did more to make the American Fur Company succeed than anyone else, shipping goods and furs, trading with the Indians, heading up bands of trappers, and keeping records. His peers recognized him for his honesty and integrity, calling him Mr. Drips or Captain. He provided well for his children who all married whites rather than Indians. He worked in the fur trade for 40 years and should be remembered as well as the other mountain men who accomplished much less. An Andrew Drips Monument stands in Andrew Drips Park in Kansas City on land donated by his daughter Katherine in 1882. Not until 1951 did the park bear his name.

hen the 84th Texas Legislature convenes on Jan. 13 and oaths of office are administered, the political party split will be 21 Republicans to 10 Democrats in the 31-member Senate, and 98 Republicans to 52 Democrats in the 150-member House. The composition and leadership of committees, the flow of legislation through those committees and control of floor debate will be according to the wishes of new Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick of Houston and House Speaker Joe Straus of San Antonio. Straus is subject to reelection by his peers. He is expected to retain the rostrum and gavel for a fourth consecutive term, even if challenged by a subgroup within the Republican party. Fort Worth attorney George P. Bush was sworn in as Texas land commissioner on Jan.

2. He succeeds Jerry Patterson at the post. Son of former Florida governor and possible 2016 presidential candidate Jeb Bush, nephew of former president and Texas governor George W. Bush and grandson of former president George H.W. Bush, George P. Bush is 38 years old and enters an elected office for the first time. Texans’ attention now refocuses on Austin as new leadership in state government takes shape in the coming days and weeks. To review, general election voters in November picked a broad slate of Republicans to replace Republicans, ostensibly to keep the philosophy about the same at the Capitol. At the top, 12-year attorney general Greg Abbott of Houston succeeds 14-year governor Rick Perry as the state’s chief executive. Abbott’s successor as attorney general will be former state Sen. Ken Paxton of McKinney. After 11 years as lieutenant governor, David Dewhurst, a

agency that regulates the oil and gas industry, the Texas Railroad Commission. In special elections set for Jan. 6, state Reps. Trey Martinez-Fischer and Jose Menendez, both San Antonio Democrats, face off for the Senate District 26 seat vacated by Leticia Van de Putte, who ran against Patrick for lieutenant governor and is now running for mayor of San Antonio. for mayor of San Antonio. And, there is a five-way race for the central Texas House District 17 seat vacated by Tim Kleinschmidt, who resigned from office in November to become general counsel for the Texas Department of Agriculture. Schools certify compliance Texas Education Agency on Dec. 18 announced that a majority of the state’s school districts and charters certified compliance with a state law requiring fingerprinting and criminal background checks. Under a law passed in 2007, employees — certified, noncertified and substitute teachers — must be fingerprinted before their first day of employment. In October, Texas Education Agency notified school superintendents asking them to certify that their district or charter school has complied with the state fingerprinting law and warned that failure to certify “may be subject to an investigation of the superintendent or

chief operating officer who has violated state law by failing to complete the certification.” Wardens get helicopter Texas Game Wardens, a division of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department with more than 500 employees, on Dec. 23 announced the acquisition of a new Airbus AS350 B3e helicopter. The aircraft, according to the announcement, is outfitted with the latest law enforcement technology and emergency response equipment including a rescue hoist, thermal imager, searchlight, public address system, satellite communication and night vision. Some $5 million in funding for the helicopter came through an appropriation made during the 83rd Texas Legislative session in 2013. by mark k. campbell The Lady Hornet varsity hoops team continues to thrill. After a 5-5A opening loss at Boswell, Azle (15-2, 2-1) not only put up a pair of district wins – both very close contests – but repeated as the champions of the Castleberry tournament for the third year in a row. On Dec. 19, AHS evened its 5-5A mark with an overtime victory at home against Saginaw. Azle won, 63-60, with every point but 2 coming from four players – all of whom reached double digits. Valarie Matlock led in scoring with 18 points; she was also the top Lady Hornet rebounder with 8. Kaycie Dunkerley hit for 16 points while Payton Berger scored 14. Taylor Fulfer led Azle with 5 assists, and she scored 13 points. Azle’s other 2 points came from Nicole Aniasco. Makenzi Bossert grabbed 7 rebounds. After that thriller, the Lady Hornets took off for the Christmas Break. Upon returning Dec. 29, AHS headed to River Oaks where Azle owns the hardwood. In the first game at Castleber-

And, again, the Lady Hornets won, this time 47-41 thanks to an 8-2 advantage in the extra period. Matlock’s 14 points paced Azle. So did her 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Dunkerley and Fulfer added 8 points each, Berger scored 7 and Bossert 5 points. A trio of Lady Hornets snagged 8 rebounds each: Kylee Brown, Berger, and Bossert. The next day, Dec. 30, Carrollton Ranchview was on the ropes at halftime, behind 2411. But a 13-4 third quarter got them closer. Finally, however, Azle kept their foe at bay and won, 36-32. Fulfer (11), Matlock (10), and Dunkerley (7) accounted for the bulk of the AHS scoring. The win sent the Lady Hor-

nets into the title game against Fort Worth Poly. In that New Year’s Eve clash, Azle blanked the Lady Parrots in the opening period while piling up 24 points. It was never close as AHS claimed its third River Oaks trophy with a 65-23 blowout. Matlock, the tourney MVP, and Berger both scored 15 points. Dunkerley added 10 and Bossert 8 points. Fulfer was named to the AllTournament Team. Back in 5-5A play, Azle ventured to Wichita Falls Jan. 2, before school resumed. AHS left with a close 48-46 win. Matlock scored 12 and Fulfer 11 points. Berger grabbed 10 rebounds. The Lady Hornets scored 7 points to rally from a 44-41 deficit late.

Wrestlers vie on Arlington, Houston mats The Azle High School boys and girls wrestling teams went different directions early this new year. On Jan. 2, the girls ventured to Houston where a jam-packed Cy-Fair 64 tournament awaited. Coach Chris Allen said more than 60 teams competed. Three Lady Hornets placed amid the talent. Hali Davis finished second in the 110-pound class. Ruby Ariosa took fourth at 110 and Lauren Dale finished seventh at 138. Other female athletes pointed: Haley Taylor, Alexis Hanna, and Hollie Taylor. Coach Allen said, “It was a great showing with 64-man brackets to get through.” The boys team took second at Arlington Lamar, impressive Allen said because a few starters were missing. Azle was led by Marshall Gilbreath who won for the third

time in a row – including a victory Dec. 19 at the prestigious Southern Oklahoma Invitational tourney at Duncan. At the Arlington event, Azle’s big man, Justin Scarbro, was named the MOW – Most Outstanding Wrestler – for his championship effort. With other Hornets pointing, Azle finished runners-up. Allen said, “They did great with kids filling in.” AHS’ six other placers included a trio of silver medal efforts: Hayden Buchanan (132 pounds), Colten Clearwater (152), and Seth Bell (182). Taking bronzes were Hagen Holbrooks (126) and Cody Donnell (160). Cutter Cox was fourth (170). Also competing were Ty Parker, Josue Juantos, Gaven Buchanan, and Cameron Herring. Four VB girls earn Academic All-State The successful 2014 volleyball season for the Lady Hornets was led by a quartet of talented, veteran athletes. And that foursome shone in the classroom, too. Azle Coach Jennifer Robinson said four Lady Hornets earned berths on the elite Texas Girls Coaches Association Ac-

ademic All-State list. The honorees: Zoe Estabrook, Mallory Kay, Brooke Smith, and Rachel Walker. The strident requirements to qualify included maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 94 or higher for all four high school years, Robinson noted.

JV, 9th girls victors The Lady Hornet subvarsity basketball squads defeated their Saginaw counterparts. The JV had 9 players score in a 34-30 win. Hayley Schlueter led with way with 8 points. by mark k. campbell Over the Christmas Break, the Hornet hoops team picked up two more victories. But a trip to Wichita Falls in the 5-5A opener did not end victoriously. Once again, Azle played in the Castleberry holiday tournament. In the River Oaks gym, AHS opened with a 40-31 win over Calvary Christian Academy. While the Hornets shot just 29 percent from the field and 50 from the free throw stripe, Azle still built a 21-13 halftime lead and that stood up. Playing all 32 minutes, Brandon Martinez paced AHS in scoring with 11 points and 8 steals. Jamie King and Bowen Moyer added 7 each; King was the top rebounder with 5. The next day, Dec. 30, Joshua edged Azle 36-31. The game began slowly with the Owls leading 3-2 after one quarter. King and Martinez paced the AHS scoring with 10 points apiece. Long range shots refused to fall; Azle went 2-of-19 from beyond the arc. In the final game in River Oaks on New Year’s Day, the Hornets left Fort Worth Dia-

Azle out-rebounded the Eagles 26-8. With the calendar turning came the first district contest, at Wichita Falls Jan. 2. Turnovers – 22 – killed Azle at Old High in a 46-31 loss. Still, the game was close at halftime with the Coyotes leading just 18-14. Coach Eddy Prather played four players all 32 minutes:

Martinez, Moyer, King, and Maxfield and the quartet were the top scorers with 12, 8, 5, 4, respectively. King and Maxfield each snagged 6 rebounds. Azle hosted Saginaw Chisholm Trail Jan. 6 (results not available at press time). On the horizon: at Denton (Jan. 9) and at home against Brewer (Jan. 13).

AHS soccer ready for 2 tournaments Weather permitting – even soccer has its elements limits – the Azle High School boys and girls squads will play two touranments in January. The defending district champion Hornets, again led by Coach Ben Buentello, will, with the Lady Hornets under new coach Jason Beck, once

more host the Azle Invitational. That event runs Jan. 8-10 on the AHS campus. Boys teams coming here: Lake Dallas, Weatherford, Cleburne, Mansfield Timberview, and three Fort Worth schools, North Side, Eastern Hills, and Diamond Hill-Jarvis. The girls teams: Denton, Al-

Movie Man

Azle News Wednesday, January 7, 2015

Enigmatic Cumberbatch stellar in Imitation Game First off, kudos to a reader who pointed out a rare Movie Man error. In the Into the Woods (Movie Man No. 1,119, a 6) review last week, the Movie Man said Dreamgirls (2006, MM 702, 16) was a failure when it moved from the stage to the screen. That was wrong; it was a hit, making $103.3 million and earning award nominations. The Movie Man meant A Chorus Line (1985). Nice catch, reader! Now… The guy with the weirdest name is the hottest actor going right now. and The Imitation Game. If you love Cumberbatch, there’s plenty more to come. Four TV Sherlocks are slated (one this year, three next – that’s a British “full season”), he’ll play a 1925 explorer in The Lost City of Z, and a violent criminal turned informant in Black Mass. But fanboys are focused on what looms in 2016; Cumberbatch has been picked to be Dr. Strange, another member of the Marvel Universe. This looks like perfect casting. We’ll know Nov. 4, 2016. Then he’ll be in Jungle Book: Origins as Shere Khan (another Khan!). How big is Cumberbatch getting? He has top billing over Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett. Thanks to the arrival of a super intelligent woman, Joan (Keira Knightley), Cumberbatch begins to soften. He spends his time consumed with building a machine that can hopefully process the jumble of letters English spies are gathering in missives. But there are other problems. Dance is getting impatient – Cumberbatch’s request of 100,000 pounds is a lot of money during wartime and he has had no successful results to show. Then there’s a Russian spy among the group. With a change of the machine’s settings, it begins its usual spinning and gyrating. Then, it suddenly quits chugging along and stops. The silence is deafening. The group rushes over to the Enigma machine and punch in the code. It works. The group is ecstatic. It’s a powerful scene.

What works (spoiler) Cumberbatch is magnificent. He plays Turing at various ages and is simply fantastic, his watery eyes and pinched face often encased in close-ups. Another good performance is turned in by Alex Lawther as the boy Turing. ‘Widespread’ flu season makes its presence known Disease reaches epidemic levels in America...and Texas...as ‘drifting’ virus lowers vaccination potency By Natalie Gentry The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that the flu has reached epidemic levels in the U.S. This announcement follows warnings by the CDC in early December that the 2014-2015 season could be severe. That the flu has reached this status isn’t a surprise to researchers. In fact this occurrence is a regular part of flu seasons. The flu is unpredictable and every season is different. What has many concerned is the fact that recent tests of reported influenza A–H3N2–cases indicate that many of the virus samples have mutated from the form that was included in the 2014 vaccinations, lessening the shot’s effectiveness. During a telebriefing held on Dec. 4, CDC officials highlighted laboratory information supporting this fact. “Unfortunately, about half of the H3N2 viruses that we’ve analyzed this season are different from the H3N2 virus that’s included in this year’s flu vaccine,” Tom Frieden the CDC’s Senior Public Affairs Officer said. “They are different enough that we’re concerned that protection from vaccinations against these drifted (mutated) H3N2 viruses may be lower than we usually see. Most of the other viruses identified are the same as the viruses covered by the vaccine.” Nevertheless, the CDC still recommends the flu vaccine; it will protect against the strands that are covered in the vaccine and may have some effectiveness against the drifted strain and reduce the severity of symptoms. According to the CDC website – www.cdc.gov – the agency reported Dec. 11 that flu vaccination last season prevented an estimated 7.2 million flu-associated illnesses and 90,000 flu hospitalizations. The mutating of the virus during an H3N2 dominant season has many concerned as this version of the flu can be more severe. “So far, this season influenza A viruses have been detected most frequently and in almost all states,” Frieden said. “We know that in seasons when H3 viruses predominant, we tend to have seasons that are the worst flu years, with more hospitalizations from flu and more deaths.” Those especially vulnerable include young children and older people.

Antiviral medications do not prevent the flu but are a second line of defense to treat the illness. The Texas DSHS’s most recent flu surveillance report classifies distribution of flu activity in Texas as “widespread.” In addition, the intensity of influenza-like illness is currently classified as “high.” Local help Local tests at Texas Health Harris have mirrored the national trend regarding flu A prevalence. Marcia Schumate, RN, CIC, infection prevention nurse said, “Between Nov. 9 and Jan. 3, Texas Health Azle performed 617 flu tests with 105 being positive. All were positive for type A except two, which were type B. “So far this flu season, there have been five patients admitted with the flu. While it’s not possible to predict how effective the flu vaccine will be each year, it is the best way to help prevent getting the flu or lessen the symptoms of the virus. “As always, good hand hygiene and cough etiquette are important. It is also very important to stay at home when you are ill to avoid spreading the flu to oth- Although it’s not possible to predict how effective the ers,” she continued. flu vaccine will be each year, according to the CDC it Anyone looking for a location is still the best way to help prevent getting the flu or to lessen the symptoms of the virus. Flu symptoms appear anywhere from 1-4 days after a person has been exposed to the virus. The main symptoms of the flu include: • Fever • Chills • Cough • Sore throat • Runny or stuffy nose

• Muscle or body aches • Headaches • Fatigue (very tired) • Some people may

Getting vaccinated The CDC and Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) recommend that everyone six months of age or older get the flu vaccination. There are a variety of vaccines available by either injection or nasal spray. However the nasal spray is not recommended for people under age 2 or over age 50. While vaccination is still the best path for prevention, the CDC also recommends the use of antiviral drugs as a second tool to fight flu.

Former Chamber President Bettis known for supporting Azle by carla noah stutsman An Azle man was shot and killed Sunday evening, Dec. 21 during an altercation between two men. Former Azle Area Chamber of Commerce President Brad Bettis was shot several times. Azle police were dispatched to a disturbance at 620 South Stewart Street at 5:54 p.m. According to Interim Police Chief Darrell West, the initial 911 call reported a verbal altercation between Benny Aulvry Rogers and Bettis. That disturbance escalated, West

said, to a point where Rogers produced a handgun and shot Bettis multiple times. Bettis, 40 and an Azle native, was pronounced dead at the scene. Due to multiple gunshot wounds, his death has been ruled a homicide by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office. Rogers, 47, the owner of the property where the incident occurred, surrendered to Azle police voluntarily, according to West, and was taken into custody without incident. He was escorted to the Azle Po-

lice Department for questioning at the time of the incident and has been fully cooperative with law enforcement officials, West said. “There have been no formal charges filed at this time,” West said. “Bettis and Rogers may have known each other and the argument that took place was domestic in nature.” The investigation is still ongoing and will be presented to the Parker County Grand Jury upon its completion, West added. In addition to Azle PD detectives and officers, Tarrant Regional Water District

Lake Patrol officers, Azle Fire Marshal Kenny Wilson, and the Texas Rangers assisted in the investigation at the scene. Bettis grew up in Azle and graduated from AHS in 1993. After college, he oversaw operations at First Independent Insurance, an affiliate of First Bank and later, Pinnacle Bank, from 2000 to 2010. Bettis was active in the community as well as in the rodeo community. He is the father of two young children. See obituary elsewhere in this publication.

The year in review, Part 1: by mark k. campbell The earthquakes that rattled the Azle area in late 2013 hung around in 2014 – and brought with it a swarm of activists. Fires, criminals, retiring leadership, and HGTV were just a few of the happenings in the first half of 2014.

Businessman dies in shooting incident

If you’re planning to celebrate the New Year with a little bubbly – or any other alcoholic beverage – make sure you have a plan to get home safely. The Texas Department of Transportation reminds motorists that law enforcement will be out in force on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day in an effort to reduce crashes and discourage drunk driving. And that means around here, too. TxDOT’s annual Holiday Impaired Driving Campaign began Dec. 1 and runs through New Year’s Day to promote the importance of planning for a sober ride. The campaign coincides with an increase in law enforcement patrols aimed at reducing the number of impaired driving crashes in Texas during the holiday season. Numerous law enforcement agencies throughout the state will also implement no-refusal initiatives.
