Friends of the Chamber: by mark k. campbell Volunteers are crucial for organizations to work. That includes the Azle Area Chamber of Commerce. And, at the annual banquet, Director Beth Crowe lauded two

women who make the Chamber hum along by giving freely of their time and talents. Shireen Dixon and Rhonda Mashburn received plaques for their Chamber volunteer work. Dixon said her Girl Scout Troop winning first place in the 2012 Sting Fling parade led to a connection with the Chamber. Receiving the trophy, she said she likes to volunteer and would be happy to help out wherever she could. So, the Chamber came calling Shireen Dixon (left) is all smiles on the in 2013 to get stage with Chamber Director Beth Crowe at Dixon to help the annual banquet. year’s Sting Fling parade. She coordinated the event again in 2014 and is on the festival’s board today. Dixon also organized the 2014 Azle Christmas Parade and plans on helping again this December. “I really enjoyed getting to work with all the wonderful people on the Sting Fling and Christmas committees,” she said. While she will continue to help with Chamber activities, Dixon, who hails from California and moved to Azle in 2010, said she is also still involved in Scouts and as a team mom for her three sporting children. “I have a lot of fun memories with the Chamber,” she said. “I especially enjoy seeing how excited children get to participate in the parade.” Mashburn, a Registered Nurse at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth, was hailed as a “leading lady behind the scenes,” by Crowe. “In volunteer hours, she cannot be topped, and in sheer dedi-

Langston wins Chamber’s Beautification award By Natalie Gentry Rustic and refined. That’s the balance Azle Deer Cove Event Center owner Sara Langston is constantly striving to achieve. This year’s winner of the Shining Star Award is always looking for a way to improve the buildings and grounds of the two-acre tract of land and enhance partygoers’ experiences. “It’s a passion that borders on obsession,” Langston said. “Any time I go into a store, go to a restaurant, or even watch a movie, I’m looking for an idea to steal.” Utilizing her inspiration and creativity is nothing new to Langston; before she opened Deer Cove, she spent 30 years teaching at Azle Junior High School. “I loved the students in Azle,” she said. “We have a great group of kids.”

1 3

The fact that Langston was a shop teacher didn’t come as a shock to award presenter Pat Russell. “I wasn’t surprised to learn that she was the junior high’s shop teacher,” Russell said. “Her passion and attention to detail are evident in every square inch of her place.” This eye for improvements has not gone unnoticed and the Azle Area Chamber of Commerce honored Langston with the award intended for the person or business that has done the most this year to improve the city and beautify the community. “This year’s winner was obvious to me,” Russell said. “I drive by the business on a daily basis so I’ve been able to watch the evolution from her husband’s barbecue restaurant to a beautiful work of art that’s a place people can go to enjoy family

photos, weddings, and parties.” And what an evolution it has been. “When I started the transition from the barbecue restaurant to an event center, I had to start small,” Langston said. “There was so much to do and I didn’t want to get overwhelmed.” So she began her make-over with the ladies bathroom. “Everything was very rustic, and the bathrooms were so plain,” Langston said. “I knew I had to add some sparkle for the ladies and the eight foot by ten foot bathroom was the perfect place to start.” By the time the restroom was complete, Langston had hit her

stride and the rest of the building followed suit. “This is the perfect business for me because I like people and am passionate about decorating, landscaping, and parties,”

Langston said. “I’m so shocked and honored to be chosen for this award.” Now we just have to wait and see what she has planned next for Deer Cove.

National Bank of Texas is all about Azle by mark k. campbell Steve Parker and his staff at National Bank of Texas love Azle. Everyone seems to be involved in things other than banking, beginning with the president of the bank. Parker currently serves on the board of both the Azle Rotary Club and the Azle Area Chamber of Commerce, as well as being an integral part of the Azle Educational Foundation and Texas Health Azle boards. Most at NBT are involved in Azle activities. Having local people helping local folks is a key to National Bank’s success, Parker said. Azle is the focus for the bank and its members and NTB can boast of some experienced personnel. Parker said, “I started in Azle in 1989.” Branch manager Carissa Widner began her career in 1997. She currently serves on the council of the city of Sanctuary and is actively

involved in the Azle Lions Club. Jessica Corley, vice-president lending, has over 19 years banking experience. She moved back to her hometown of Azle in 2013. She is actively involved in the Azle community with the Rotary Club and the Optimist Club. Sarah Hicks, Diana Rust, Bobbie Baldwin and the latest addition to the teller line, Baylee Davis, round out the staff. Parker said, “Pretty much all of us have spent years in the Azle community. And all of our customers that we have known through the years mostly have come to us.” From its temporary building beginnings, the National Bank of Texas is now settled into a modern facility at 405 Commerce Street next to the Post Office. At the bank, customers can expect traditional services with hometown flair. “All banking loans – real estate, automobile, business

– as well as all the deposit products” are available, Parker said. “They want a stable environment which would be a bank like ours,” he said. The security of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) insuring deposits up to $250,000 is comforting to customers. Parker said it’s important to him that he and his employees work in the community with the people who are their customers – hence their presence throughout town. Lobby hours for the bank are Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday hours are extended from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. The drive-through is open from 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and from 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday. Community spirit is alive at NBT – that’s what the National Bank of Texas is all about. For more information, call 817-444-4235.

Storey recognized as Businesswoman of the Year by Natalie Gentry During her presentation for the Twinkling Star Award, presenter Paula Ambrose succinctly highlighted the trial all presenters face when preparing a speech to honor new award recipients. “These past couple of weeks I’ve developed a new set of skills,” Ambrose said. “They include spying, telling falsehoods, practicing deception, and some plain good old-fashioned stalking.” But all the work and deception was for a good cause: to honor Azle’s Businesswoman of the Year, Christie Storey. She’s the wife to Tom and mother to Parker and Catherine – as well as owner of the pink shuttered Catty Roo’s Boutique.

Storey isn’t originally from Azle. She was living and working in Burleson at her family’s business when she met Tom. “She was selling toys for grown men and it was during one of these sales that she actually met her husband,” Ambrose said. These toys just happen to be tractors. “I got to wear jeans and boots every day,” Storey said. “I’m really a jeans and boots girl.” It wasn’t long until Storey moved to Azle where she focused on being a full-time mom and barrel racer. “Like most women though, even though everything was going great, she felt the need to do more,” Ambrose said. “So she decided to become a boutique owner.”

Storey chalks up the decision to open Catty Roo’s to a tiny spark of insanity. “I don’t know why I did it, I didn’t want to work for anybody else,” she said. “I just knew I couldn’t stay home.” And so her adventure as a boutique owner began. She said she never expected recognition and was shocked by the award. “I just appreciate everybody who has helped me get here; family, friends, and customers,” Christie Storey (right) accepts the Businesswoman of the Storey said. “I’m truly humbled Year award from last year’s honoree Paula Ambrose and by the honor.” Chamber President, Shelli Price. Leonard named Azle’s top businessman by mark k. campbell “A total surprise.” That’s what Eric Leonard, manager of Cash America Pawn, said when he was chosen as the Azle Area Chamber of Commerce Businessman of the Year. “I’m speechless. It’s quite an honor,” he said. Receiving the award from the previous year’s winner – Brian Rogers of Ace of Azle – made it even more special, Leonard said. “I think the world of him and it was great that he passed the torch,” Leonard said. Cash America Pawn has been in Azle since the early 1990’s. The business moved from Main Street to its current location 701 Boyd Road in October 2011. Leonard’s journey to Businessman of the Year began with his employment with Cash America Pawn. He moved through the ranks to assistant store manager, shop manager, and beyond. His preference is to manage a shop – a valuable asset in communities, he noted.

“With pawn shops, it about building relationships and serving the community,” Leonard said. Another plus is that when he assumed control of the Azle shop, he no longer had to commute to his job. “I got to buy a home and become a member of the community,” he said. “That’s pretty

nice.” From the stage, Rogers said of Leonard, “The people who work with and for him say that he has an analytical mind that can take any directive that comes his direction and filter it to meet the needs of their particular location in our community.” His employees referred to Leonard as “an excellent leader”

and hailed him for creating a positive work atmosphere. With delegation and by involving his entire staff, everyone at Cash America Pawn feels responsible and valuable, Rogers told the assembled banquet crowd. Leonard, married with two teenage daughters, has been in Azle since July 2011. Rogers said that the Cash American Pawn’s corporate office has high aspirations for

Leonard, but he’s happy to “hang his hat” in Azle. And that’s good news for the community since Leonard is known for going out of his way to not only oversee the needs of his many customers but to see that his employees – some college students – have the flexibility to further their educations. That expansive view is what helped make Leonard the Azle Area Chamber of Commerce Businessman of the Year.

Simmons made a brief but important stop on the way from his seat in the audience to the stage to accept his award. “I stopped to give my wife a kiss,” he said. “What I do takes time away from my spouse and my family – our families are the biggest supporters of what we do.” It’s all about balancing work, personal life and family, Simmons said. Why does he do it? For Azle. “Azle has a lot of identity, and we’re so happy to be a part of it.”

Family practice led by family men by Natalie Gentry Health First Azle Family Practice has been offering professional care and aid to the community for years, and their success is due in part to the pair of experienced doctors at its helm. Kriss Myers, M.D. grew up in Longview, attending school there before heading to Stephen F. Austin State University for his undergraduate education. After earning a diploma in 1983, Myers attended graduate school at University of Texas Medical School, where he completed studies in 1987. His family practice residency was undertaken at JPS in Fort

Worth in 1990. During this time, he practiced family medicine in Nocona, but moved to the Dallas/ Fort Worth area in 1990 to start HealthFirst with several other doctors. In 1995, Myers became associated with Dr. James Savage in Azle, and still cares for some of his patients today. At that time, Myers moved to Azle from the Metroplex. In 2000, he opened the clinic where it stands today, and now employs two physicians, four nurse practitioners, and one physician assistant. Myers and his wife, Ronah, have five children, three of whom have graduated from, or

are currently attending Louisiana State University. The family is, of course, big fans of LSU. When not caring for the citizens of Azle, Dr. Myers enjoys playing golf. P. Daniel Gonzalez, M.D. was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the son of a retired naval officer. He grew up in Florida, along the east coast of the U.S. and in California. By the time he started tenth grade, Gonzalez had been enrolled in 10 schools. He started high school at Arlington Bowie and graduated there in 1983. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M

Gonzalez then went to work for Kraft for five years before making the decision to attend medical school at UT Southwestern in Dallas, where he graduated in 1998. He completed his residency at John Peter Smith hospital in Fort Worth. Gonzalez was Board certified in Family Medicine in 2001

Star Bank is community focused: by mark k. campbell Star Bank is not one of those giant banking chains that dominate the landscape of most cities and towns. And the employees at Star Bank

know that’s a good thing. That way they can be more community focused. Christy Dusek arrived at the Lake Worth branch just a couple of weeks before the bank opened in February 1998.

From its beginnings in a temporary building then to its streamlined, modern facility today, Dusek has been there from the start. “We are so fortunate to be a community bank,” she said. “Cus-

And they’re animal-friendly, too

tomer service is what we do best.” And that starts from the moment you step inside where you are immediately greeted. “We know who our customers are – we call them by name,” Dusek said. Star Bank offers another facet that is highly unusual – and one you won’t see at Chase or some other huge banking corporation. “We’re an animal-friendly bank,” Dusek said. She said that often dogs Corona and Lilly come inside with their owners and they “roam the bank.” Dusek has a history with community banks – in fact, throughout her decades long banking career, every year has been in those types of banks. From stints at the old Azle State Bank – twice – to Lake Worth National – where Dusek worked for 10 years – to Shady Oaks National Bank to today, she has been involved in community banks. Dusek said, “Community banks

are family banks. I’ve been here for 17 years and this is my work family. I spend as much time with my work family as with my real family.” An Azle resident since arriving in town in 1970, Dusek graduated from Azle High School in 1978. Then she got into banking. “That’s all I know,” she chuckled. Star Bank, located at 3930 Boat Club Road, is “where everybody is somebody,” their motto. The Lake Worth bank – and the White Settlement and Burleson branches – offers the usual array of services that can be found at most banks. Plus there’s that personal connection the national banks lack. Star Bank has an app now, and, in the near future, mobile depositing will become a reality. Or you can come in and visit in person. Dusek and her cohorts would love to see you – and your pet, too.

Xtreme Lawn Care: Azle’s top business by mark k. campbell Purple. If you see a person or vehicle involved with Xtreme Lawn Care, somewhere you’ll see the color purple. A lot of it. Rather than use the traditional green to brand a landscape business, co-owner Justin Berg chose purple.

Born and raised in Azle – he has never left – the business’ clientele grew into the hundreds. And it would soon expand greatly when Berg came on board. A transplant here after selling his successful business in Boston, Berg not only came to Azle but brought his parents and in-laws along, too. Buchanan asked Berg to grow and run Xtreme while the former continued to work in the field. That was a good business decision. From 250 clients, Xtreme blossomed to more than 2,500 in three years all over the area – and with every employee wearing purple. That unifying color helped everyone, Berg said. “It created a pride in the company and that translates into work.” The purple vehicles of Xtreme Lawn Care are regularly With such a presence in Azle seen around town – and the area – delivering quality, pro- – and all over Fort Worth and fessional landscaping. The business boasts over 2,500 the area as well – Xtreme is clients and employs 45 people. mighty successful. Today, everyone associated with Xtreme Lawn Care is adorned in purple – including owners Wayne Buchanan and Berg. Buchanan, 45, started the business in 1993, working part-time on weekends and holidays while keeping his regular full-time job. Eventually, Xtreme became so popular that Buchanan took it on as his major job.

Still, Berg said the Chamber’s award came as a surprise. Both he and Buchanan were out of town on the night of the banquet, but Berg was effusive in his thanks to the Chamber. “We are very honored,” he said. “Shocked. We didn’t know – we’re thrilled.” Buchanan echoed that: “I’m very proud of this award. It means a lot to me. “We work very hard and take a lot of pride in what we do. It’s nice to know that it is being noticed.” Xtreme’s positive reputation continues to spread and so does the fact that an Azle company is sought after by “big city” folks. “It’s given us some notoriety,” Berg said. “Not a lot of businesses come out of Azle. We take pride in that.” With 45 employees, Xtreme is a substantial employer in town and “we’re happy about that,” Berg said. He noted that Xtreme man-

aged to break some stereotypes about the landscape business. For one, there was a stigma about it. And: women were often afraid of landscapers coming over with their “loud trucks.” Careful branding has overcome those preconceptions, Berg said. A major reason for the success is Xtreme’s dedicated employees. “It takes a special person to work 12 hours in 100-degree weather dealing with grass and dust and poop,” he said. Buchanan and Berg have assembled a professional team with an impeccable reputation. Or, as the Chamber noted during the Gold Star Business of the Year presentation: “In recognition and appreciation of the admirable example your business has set earning the respect of the Azle community.” That’s high praise – worthy of honoring. So the Chamber did.
