High Flying Keeper

BY MARK K CAMPBELL While no time frame has been etched in stone, Spring Break looms as a date for two prominent positions in the Springtown ISD to likely be filled – one before and one after. Superintendent Mike Kelley said he has received many top notch candidates to replace out-going SHS principal Chris Pennington and head football coach/athletic director Brad Turner. “I’m very excited about the quality of candidates for both positions,” Kelley said. He added that Springtown – as a town and as a school district – is enticing to many. “The applications I’ve received refl ect that these positions are both very desirable jobs,” he said. Kelley said that the football coach/ AD position will be the first filled. “I thinks it’s fairly typical for schools our size to bring in a new head football coach in mid-spring so he can begin evaluating the existing program. “A signifi cant portion of his work is likely done by then – football games, scheduling, realignment, etc.” Replacing Pennington as SHS’ principal is trickier since that position is loaded with many activities that take place after Spring Break – STAAR testing, teacher contract renewals and evaluations, and graduation to name a few. “I suspect that each of the principal PLEASE SEE SISD, PAGE 2A.

peers to be a “master teacher.” Westberry’s nomination highlights her rapport with her students. Her reaction to receiving the award was earnest and forthright. “I am so excited to have been chosen to receive the Jack Harvey award this year,” Westberry said. “A plaque listing past recipients hangs in the board room at Central Services with some pretty legendary names. “I feel extremely honored to be recognized with many of my most

admired colleagues,” she continued. “The awards ceremony was wonderful and I will treasure the experience for years to come.” Her nomination was fi lled with superlatives: “Mrs. Westberry is exemplary because she encompasses all the traits of a model teacher. She is caring, nurturing, disciplined and fair. She always puts student learning and student needs above all else.” The nomination also illustrates her relationships with her peers.

“Mrs. Westberry models teacher leadership, and she constantly searches for methods to enhance her teaching ability,” the nomination reads. “A consummate professional, she exemplifi es the best of what education entails. “Her peers look to her for advice, counsel, and often just a positive word. Mrs. Westberry’s work ethic and resolve for student success have made her an exemplary teacher and a model educator,” it continues. “It goes without saying that Goshen Creek Elementary School is extremely lucky to have Mrs. Westberry serving our students.”

applicants currently in an administrative position will have very important responsibilities yet to fulfill in their current district,” Kelley said. With that thinking in mind, the superintendent said formal interviews with principal candidates will not begin until after Spring Break, March 10-14. Kelley added that Pennington will have most of those intricate details and chores finished before his replacement arrives. Kelley said he hopes to have a football coach/AD in place before Spring Break. “There are several variables that could impact the timing of our athletic director/head football coach, but I think a legitimate target would be to have the new coach in place by Spring Break,” he said.

SISD conducts trustee elections by “place.” A candidate must select which “place” they will run. As of Feb. 12 two incumbents have filed – Jody R. Lowery for Place 4 and Amy Walker for Place 5. The candidate filing period ends Feb. 28.

Candidate packets are available during the entire filing period and can be picked up at the SISD Administration Office at 301 East 5th Street. School district prepares for Open Houses coming by Natalie GeNtry March is always a busy month for Texas schools; there is testing to prepare for and Spring Break plans to make. This year the Springtown Independent School District (SISD) has added another event to the calendar: Open House. Open House is a night designed to give parents and guardians some insight into their child’s school day. It is a great time for adults to ask questions of their children’s teachers to solidify the parent-teacher tag-team and ensure success for each student. Communication between school and home is essential to the educational process and an Open House is an opportunity to further the

rapport. Springtown High School kicks the week off with their Open House on Monday March 3, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Springtown Intermediate School chose to couple their Math and Science Night with their Open House on Tuesday, March 4, from 6-7:30 p.m. Goshen Creek Elementary and Reno Elementary will both host their events on Thursday, March 6, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Springtown Elementary School’s Open House will be March 6 as well, from 5:307:30 p.m. Springtown Middle School completes the district’s Open Houses on Thursday, March 6, from 6-7:30 p.m.

SMU quake study ongoing Results could be years in coming by carla noah stutsman Even though it’s now been three weeks since the U.S. Geological Society (USGS) has reported an earthquake in the Azle/Reno area, researchers from Southern Methodist University (SMU) say seismic activity continues here. Heather DeShon, associate professor of geophysics at SMU and the lead researcher on the Azle area study says a network of sensors has detected numerous small quakes – too small to report to USGS. Still, that seismic activity provides data for the study and can be useful to scientists trying

the University of Texas at Austin. Additionally, SMU has purchased an Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) Active Earth Monitor, which is a customizable computer-based earth science display designed for schools, libraries, etc. The system provides an interactive way to learn about earthquakes. The SMU research team is designing a Reno-Azle-specific module for this system and plans to place the system in a public area in the Reno-Azle area as soon it is delivered in March or April. In the meantime, Commissioners and staff at the Railroad Commission of Texas say they are still in the process of interviewing candidates for the position of in-house seismologist.

to determine whether there’s a link between the recent swarm of 30-plus earthquakes in the area and the wastewater injection wells located nearby, DeShon said. The only catch is that it could be a year or even two before researchers collect enough data, decipher it, and publish the findings. The SMU research team unveiled a website containing information about the study which can be viewed at http://smu. edu/smunews/earthquakestudy/ study-faqs.asp#top. The main page text is the summary of the goals for the research, and the FAQs provide answers to individual questions. Vote To Keep One person was transported to Harris Methodist Hospital after a rear end collision on Knob Hill Road at approximately 7:45 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31. Amber Harshman received minor facial lacerations when the vehicle she was driving ran into the back of a truck driven by Lionel Mendoza of Newark. Harshman said she didn’t see Mendoza – who had stopped in order to make a left turn onto North Cardinal – until it was too late. The children in the vehicle with Harshman were unhurt. Harshman was able to call her husband, but as he rushed to the scene, he lost control of his motorcycle approximately a mile from the crash. He was treated at the scene and released.

OPINION Thursday, February 13, 2014

The best 75 cents I ever spent You never know or

A

million years ago – Valentine’s Day 1974 – I spent 75 cents very wisely. But first: Valentine’s Day has changed a bit since those days of Nixon and 55-cent gas and Blazing Saddles. As a child, we had Valentine’s Day parties at school where you had to give everyone a valentine. These were deposited into boxes we had worked on in art class for many days. (You could always tell – even at that age – which kids had artistic skills. I clearly did not.) While you were required to give each kid a valentine, you were not prohibited from giving special people special valentines. I gave Renee Brown an oversized valentine; I should have realized that my deep fourth grade eternal love was not being reciprocated when I in return got a regular Peanuts valentine just like the other desk-bound mortals she strode around. Occasionally, you could score some candy. Keeping something edible in class was unheard of back then; if you got a Hershey’s kiss or one of those

boxes of candy valentine hearts, they were immediately collected and put in the teacher’s desk, not to be given back until the final bell. Today, I take my grandON YOUR son to school sometimes MARK and kids are eating at their Mark K. Campbell desks! Pop Tarts and Fruit Loops and chocolate milk! How can that be?! We got chastised for chewing gum. And about those boxes of candy hearts. Recently, they have gotten with the times. Today’s candies say things like “Sup Babe” and others employ the shorthand of the day, “URS 4EVR.” I was too scared to see if they had adopted the current use of the N-word – slightly altered – so prevalent among all races of teens today. I hope no “Sup My N*gg*” hearts were included.

(I recently had a conversation with my daughter about that word’s regular appearance online. [On the newspaper’s Twitter feed, we had to stop “following” many teens because of their “my n*gg*” posts.] My 30something daughter is married to a Latino and he says browns get a break for using it but whites still should not. How about no one use it, I say from my old-man-BillCosby-we-shall-overcome mentality?) Long ago, I tried the witty abbreviation bit, telling a girl U R A B-U-T. Clearly, that says “you are a beauty.” However it was not received in that manner. B-U-T was close enough to “butt” – something that’s hardly ever a good idea to mention around a female of any age unless it’s: “No, those pants don’t make your butt look big because you are a B-U-T.” Today there are many options when it comes to impressing your No. 1 on Valentine’s Day. If you’re lazy, you can send an “ecard” which will display some sort of

critter dancing to Casio-created music with “Happy Valentine’s Day” splayed out at the end. Jewelry might impress or a spa certificate or poetry or even something as well-worn as flowers and/or candies. (To make a real impression, you need to have things delivered to your beloved’s workplace. As a driver who once delivered flowers for 15 Valentine’s Days in a row, nothing makes your soulmate more excited than receiving a goodie in front of workmates. Trust me on this.) Then there are real, Hallmark-y Valentine’s Day cards – and here’s where the 75 cents comes in. In the late winter of 1974, I lived 18 miles from school. Only one other person resided anywhere near me – an impossibly attractive blonde, literally the girl next door. We drove to school back and forth together from our distant outposts through the years. Just months from graduation that February, I was itching to get out of Dodge and see the world. If I never came back it would be too soon. (Today, naturally, I own a chunk of land there.)

My car mate and I would soon head out into different directions in the wacky ‘70’s – after a few months, we might never see one another again. So, even though she was seriously involved with a guy (the mayor’s son – who could compete with that?!), I bought her a valentine. For 75 cents. It was a giant one, too. That’s why it cost 75 cents – big money in 1974. But she was worth it. I didn’t just give it to her. I mailed it. Oh, I could’ve simply walked over and stuck it in the box, but there’s a cool factor (even today) when getting something unexpected in the mail. Man, did that 75 cents pay off! Later that madcap year, after venturing to separate colleges, we ended up getting together. Then married. And she said that valentine made a huge impression. Wow...75 cents...you never know. So, if you want my advice, buy a card. And mail it. It might be too late for Valentine’s Day, but that’s even better. Surprises carry clout that just might last 4EVR, yo. Mark K. Abraham Lincoln endured a difficult life, Part 3

T

he family moved north across the Ohio Riverto free territory and made a new start in Indiana. Lincoln later noted that this move was “partly on account of slavery” but mainly due to land title difficulties. In Indiana, when Lincoln was nine, his mother Nancy died of milk sickness in 1818. After the death of Lincoln's mother, his older sister, Sarah, took charge of caring for him until their father remarried in 1819; Sarah later died in her 20s while giving birth to a stillborn son. Thomas Lincoln's new wife was the widow Sarah Bush Johnston, the mother of three children. Lincoln became very close to his stepmother, and referred to her as “Mother.” As a preteen, he did not like the hard labor associated with frontier life. Some in his family, and in the neighborhood, for a time considered him to be lazy. As he grew into his teens, he willingly took responsibility for all chores expected of him as one of the boys in the household and became an adept axeman in his work building rail fences. He attained a reputation for brawn and audacity after a very competitive

wrestling match to which he was challenged by the renowned leader of a group of ruffians, “the Clary's Grove boys.” Lincoln also agreed with the customary obligation of a son to give his father all earnings from work done outside the home until age 21. In later years, Lincoln occasionally loaned his father money. Lincoln became increasingly distant from his father, in part because of his father's lack of education. While young Lincoln's formal education consisted approximately of a year's worth of classes from several itinerant teachers, he was mostly self-educated and was an avid reader and often sought access to any new books in the village. He also said, “Books serve to show a man that those original thoughts of his aren't very new after all.” In 1830, fearing a milk sickness outbreak along the Ohio River, the Lincoln family moved west, where they settled on public land 10 miles west of Decatur, in Macon County, Illinois, another free, non-slave state. In 1831, Thomas relocated the family to a new homestead in Coles County, Illinois. It was then that, as an ambitious 22-year-old who was now old enough

to make his own decisions, Lincoln struck out on his own. Canoeing down the Sangamon River, Lincoln ended up in the village of New Salem in Sangamon County. In the HISTORICAL spring of 1831, by a New HIGHLIGHTS hired Salem businessman, DenLaurie Moseley ton Offutt and accompanied by friends, he took goods by flatboat from New Salem to New Orleans via the Sangamon and Mississippi Rivers. After arriving in New Orleans – and witnessing slavery firsthand – he walked back home. Lincoln's first romantic interest was Ann Rutledge, whom he met when he first moved to New Salem; by 1835, they were in a relationship but not formally engaged. She died at the age of 22 on August 25, 1835, most likely of typhoid fever. In the early 1830s, he met Mary

Owens from Kentucky when she was visiting her sister. Late in 1836, Lincoln agreed to a match with Mary if she returned to New Salem. Mary did return in November 1836, and Lincoln courted her for a time; however, they both had second thoughts about their relationship. On August 16, 1837, Lincoln wrote Mary a letter suggesting he would not blame her if she ended the relationship. She never replied and the courtship ended. In 1840, Lincoln became engaged to Mary Todd, who was from a wealthy slave-holding family in Lexington, Kentucky. They met in Springfield, Illinois, in December 1839 and were engaged the following December. A wedding set for January 1, 1841, was canceled when the two broke off their engagement at Lincoln's initiative. They later met again at a party and married on November 4, 1842, in the Springfield mansion of Mary's married sister. While preparing for the nuptials and feeling anxiety again, Lincoln, when asked where he was going, replied, “To hell, I suppose.” In 1844, the couple bought a house in Springfield near Lincoln's law office. Mary Todd Lincoln kept house, often with the help of a relative or

hired servant girl. Robert Todd Lincoln was born in 1843 and Edward Baker Lincoln (Eddie) in 1846. Lincoln “was remarkably fond of children,” and the Lincolns were not considered to be strict with their children. Edward died on February 1, 1850, in Springfield, probably of tuberculosis. “Willie” Lincoln was born on December 21, 1850, and died on February 20, 1862. The Lincolns' fourth son, Thomas “Tad” Lincoln, was born on April 4, 1853, and died of heart failure at the age of 18 on July 16, 1871. Robert was the only child to live to adulthood and have children. His last descendant, grandson Robert Todd Lincoln Beckwith, died in 1985. The deaths of their sons had profound effects on both parents. Later in life, Mary struggled with the stresses of losing her husband and sons, and Robert Lincoln committed her temporarily to a mental health asylum in 1875. Abraham Lincoln suffered from “melancholy,” a condition which now is referred to as clinical depression.

State’s Permanent School Fund reaches new high

T

exas’ 160-yearold Permanent School Fund had grown to $29 billion, a record high value, in December 2013, the Texas Education Agency reported Feb. 6. The fund was created by the state in 1854 with a $2 million investment. Last year was a good one. In fiscal year 2013, which ended Aug. 31, the fund earned a return of 10.16 percent — the highest return earned by any major state of Texas investment fund. Recent strong returns also made the Permanent School Fund the best performing major state fund over a three-year period ending on Aug. 31, 2013, with a return of 11.07 percent. How the fund helps at the local level: • A distribution from the fund is made every year to help pay a portion of education costs in each school district. During the 2012-2013 biennium, the fund distributed more than $2 billion to Texas public primary and

secondary schools. • The fund provides a guarantee for bonds issued by local school districts and this important support will soon be extended to charter schools, according to the education agency. As a result of the fund maintaining the AAA bond rating through the global financial crisis, qualified districts are able to pay lower interest rates when issuing bonds. At the end of 2013, the fund’s assets guaranteed $55.2 billion in school district bonds, providing a cost savings to 810 public school districts, the education agency stated. Education Coordinating Board announced the launch of the Texas Affordable Baccalaureate Degree Program the governor’s office described as “a low-cost, competency-based bachelor’s degree for college students.” Last week the degree program was started at South Texas College and Texas A&M University-Commerce, institutions that collaborated with the Board to develop the program. “In 2011, Gov. Perry called on Texas higher education to develop low-cost alternatives for earning a college degree,” Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Commissioner Raymund Paredes said. “The launch of this program answers that call and demonstrates to institutions around Texas and the nation that faculty-driven collaboration and the adoption of game-changing innovations in higher education delivery can create new, affordable pathways to degree attainment.” “Texas attracts world-class companies across a variety of

industries, and today’s evolving economy requires a skilled workforce prepared to meet the diverse needs of our employers,” Perry said in a Feb. 5 statement. Texas gets top ranking For the year 2013, Texas was ranked as the top exporting state in the nation by the U.S. Census Bureau, making it the 12th consecutive year Texas has held this position, the governor’s office announced. Texas’ export revenues for 2013 amounted to nearly $280 billion, up more than 5 percent from the previous year and outpacing U.S. export growth. “Texas continues to set a national example for economic success because of our commitment to the conservative fiscal principles that allow businesses to thrive,” Gov. Perry said. Playoff game delayed Not once but twice. The Lady Porcupine basketball team had its bi-district game against Graham postponed two times by winter weather. Originally, Springtown was set to face the Lady Blues at Jacksboro Monday, Feb. 10. That iced out and so did a Tuesday, Feb. 11 attempt at Poolville. The game was played Wednesday, Feb. 13, too late for our press deadline. See Facebook (Springtown-Epigraph) and Twitter (@SpringtownEpi) for the outcome.

If Waldrop succeeds in his first trio of bouts, he would run into the reigning state champ from Georgetown, Jace Lacalle (33-1). From there, coach Brokenshire said, it’s likely the gold medal contest would find Waldrop tangling with either the Region 3 title holder from Humble Summer Creek, Dakota Allen (23-1), or Sam Ehmke of Frisco Centennial (41-0), the wrestler who defeated Waldrop at the very end of that Region 2 championship match. For the first time ever, the state wrestling venue has been moved. It’s now housed at the Garland ISD Curtis Culwell Center. Waldrop’s quest to medal begins at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 14.

Playoffs loom for Porcupines Clearly, Kennedale is the No. 2 3A team in Texas for a reason. The Wildcats sewed up another district hoops title at the SHS gym Feb. 7 with 90-56 victory over Springtown (13-15, 6-3). The Porcupines hung with the visitors early, trailing just 19-13 after the first period. But Kennedale impressed the entire game – so much so that several Springtown fans met Wildcats on the court after the contest to wish them success. SHS has had its own success

this year. The Porcupines are again returning to the postseason as the No. 2 6-3A seed. Against the Wildcats, Caleb Brown scored 15 points and Dawson Meek added 14. Bad weather has delayed the season finale against Castleberry; SHS’ bi-district information has not yet been determined. JV – The SHS JV lost 52-40 to Kennedale. Ryan Neal’s 12 points paced Springtown. Tristen Brawner added 8, hitting a pair of treys. Porcupine Kruz Dominguez (left) tries to work past a Kennedale Wildcat Feb. 7 at SHS.

Vaulting to success Brokenshire signs with North Texas After consecutive trips to the state track and field championships – and a third highly likely – Porcupine Benji Brokenshire attracted the attention of the University of North Texas. On Feb. 12, the senior signed a letter of intent to compete as an Eagle. Brokenshire won a state silver pole vault medal last May. Benji Brokenshire signs with North Texas (left). The Bears won both the boys and girls district matches by identical scores, 3-0. Next up for the SHS teams is more 12-4A action. Movie Man

Thursday, February 13, 2014

(Almost) Everything Is Awesome! in The Lego Movie Just when making movies based on popular toys appeared to have run its course – the Transformers were big but Battleship (2012, Movie Man No. 983, a 4) tanked – along comes a fi lm about Lego building blocks. And it’s fun. About the movie Sometimes you can just tell that a movie is going to be a hit. (The Lego Movie raked in over $69 million in its fi rst weekend and earned rave reviews.) It’s been a while since a movie earned such positive buzz. With today’s social media explosion, movie trailers are now available anywhere, anytime. That wasn’t always the case. A while back – most of the previous milleneum – it was a big deal to get to the theater on time to see previews. The Movie Man (who, in his early days back in the 1990’s used to review trailers, too) remembers being almost giddy when a coming attraction to an anticipated/rumored movie unspooled. The 1976 preview for King Kong comes to mind; it didn’t deliver as advertised [a fullsized, robotic Kong!], but today it’s a great time capsule movie. The same year, fantasy/sci-fi fans (like the Movie Man) were in a frenzy awaiting Logan’s Run which looked incredible. It remains one of the Movie Man’s favorite movies even though it, too, is as dated as the ’76 Kong. (You could do far worse than collect movies from 1976: Taxi Driver, Rocky, Network, Carrie, All the President’s Men, Marathon Man, The Outlaw Josey Wales, The Omen, Silent Movie, The Enforcer (a Dirty Harry movie); A Star Is Born, and a movie that was huge among the Movie Man’s gang, a whodunit comedy Murder By

Death.) Anyway, the preview for The Lego Movie was a hit on the big screen and on tablets and phones, etc., too. Such excitement generation among all age groups equaled success. It’s still possible to get jazzed in a theater by a coming attraction. Plenty of nerds are waiting for the trailer for the second Avengers picture Age of Ultron (due May 1, 2015). And if you’ve seen the preview for Interstellar (set for this Nov. 7) and are a sci-fi fan, you are probably salivating at the idea of Christopher Nolan’s next movie after The Dark Knight Rises (2012, MM #998, 8,). It’s a great, old school coming attraction that spurs interest instead of spelling everything out. But let’s talk about toys (and it’s Lego not Legos purists will tell you).

What doesn’t work The incessant busyness of the movie gets a bit disconcerting. There’s so much going on it can get frustrating taking it all in. The creation of Lego vehicles is so accelerated that there’s no pleasure in seeing them built. There’s a reason The Lego Movie isn’t an 8. It contains many laughs but not enough. That lack of humor is what keeps it below the highest animation bar, Shrek (2001, MM #405, 9, Best of Year). While the cast is star-studded, picking out voices is tough. The movie remains on the “cute” scale until Batman shows up then picks up. Even then, though, there was so much more possibility with the myriad of characters. very inoffensive. Summing up This is one of those movies you can enjoy with kids. It’s very good but not great. Next up Robocop. The Movie Man is passing on the movies aimed at the Valentine’s Day crowd: two girlie movies (Winter’s Tale and Endless Love) and an African-American remake of About Last Night (even though the red-hot Kevin Hart is tempting.) The original About Last Night... in 1986 is a minor classic from the ancient ‘80’s.

No business like snow business Parker County’s lone snow plow is prepared to clear roads By Natalie GeNtry This unusual winter has left many residents across Parker County wondering where all the snow and ice has come from. Some have even begun to compare this season to the winter of 2011.

In fact, George Conley, County Commissioner for Precinct 1 chose to purchase the county’s only snow plow after that winter. “So many of the roads were impossible to drive,” Conley said.

The plow Precinct 1 chose a Snow Dogg plow by Buyers. Key features on Snow Dogg plows include stainless-steel moldboard with a molded poly deflector, a 70-degree attack angle for its scraping, rolling, and throwing action, and a onehalf inch cutting edge. The plow is also equipped with a heavy-duty covered power unit, and a quick mount system that enables crews to easily transition the truck according to the weather. However, not everyone was convinced the plow was necessary. “I’ve taken some ribbing for buying it,” Conley continued. “But I’m glad we did.” He added: “We’ve had the the plow is equipped with an easy-mount system which enable the crew to attach it and begin clearing plow for two years.
