Indoor Drumline scores big win

Foam for the Flames

1st at Houston regional competition BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN Members of Azle High School’s Indoor Drumline – and their director, Richard Kearns – are spending Spring Break in an unusual location. It’s called Cloud Nine. The merry band of percussionists returned just before sunrise Sunday from a huge win at the Winter Guard International (WGI) Regional Competition in Houston Saturday, March 8. “This was by far the biggest day...the greatest accomplishment this drumline has ever had,” Kearns said. Azle firefighters, still spraying foam onto a pickup that had been fully engulfed in flames moments earlier, work to open the hood so they can get to the source of the fire. The pickup caught fi re Wednesday, March 3, about 6:30 p.m. as its driver and two passengers were northbound on FM 730 North, just north of the Sandy Beach Road intersection. Circus attracts thousands Big Top stands tall at city’s center BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN The fl ags above the Big Top caught the attention of almost 3,000 people Monday, marking the greatest attendance of the Carson & Barnes Circus in Azle’s history. Beth Crowe, executive director for the Azle Area Chamber of Commerce, said the event was a success – and a lot of fun for everyone. “We had really nice, beautiful weather and that made everyone happy,” Crowe said. “Of course, it was Spring Break, and I think that helped with attendance, as well.” Those patrons were treated to a good, old-fashioned circus complete with elaborate costumes, skilled performers, clowns, and animals ranging from trained dogs and horses to the most traditional symbol of the circus, the elephants.

During intermission, kids and adults alike were even able to ride the elephants. Crowe said the staff and everyone associated with the circus were very good to work with. “They were all over any issue that came up – very accommodating and very attentive to people on the lot,” Crowe said of Carson & Barnes’ personnel. “They were concerned for the safety of the patrons and they were also very conscientious about the cleanliness of the grounds.” Four people protested alleged cruelty to some circus animals near the front entrance to the circus on Roe Street. Azle police were called and no incidents occurred as a result of the protesters. In addition to the Chamber, sponsors of the circus were Brookshire’s, CashAmerica Pawn, Classic Green, Pinnacle Bank, and Star Bank of Texas.
