Nebraska accident claims AHS senior

Scotland Avenue Blaze

Dovel wanted to graduate with Azle classmates BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN Azle High School students are mourning the loss of one of their own following a tragic accident in Nebraska Tuesday, March 11. Timothy Julio Dovel, an 18-yearold senior at AHS, was visiting his parents, who live in Ogallala, Nebraska, over Spring Break. He died after the pickup he was driving ran into a semi-trailer on I-80 about four miles west of North Platte. According to a report from the Nebraska State Patrol, Dovel was alone driving eastbound when his pickup crossed the median and hit a westbound semi-trailer.

The collision knocked the trailer off its tandem axle, according to the accident report. The wreck occurred at 2:34 p.m. Both westbound lanes of I-80 were closed until the wreckage was cleaned up about 4 p.m., a state patrol spokesperson said. The semi-truck was from Florida. Its driver was not injured in the collision. It is not known what caused Dovel’s pickup to cross the median, the spokesperson said. According to his obituary, Timothy was born Jan. 23, 1996 in Lancaster, Texas to Timothy C. and Ana Lucia PLEASE SEE AHS, PAGE 3A.

A fi re Thursday, March 13, inside a shop building in the 1700 block of Scotland Avenue caused the “complete loss” of the building itself as well as its contents, according to Tarrant County Deputy Fire Marshal Mike Rehfeld. The exact cause of the fi re is not known; however, Rehfeld said it began in the immediate area of a lawn tractor the owner had just used and put away. Vehicles ranging from lawn mowers to four-wheelers to fully restored antiques were inside the shop when it burned. Firefi ghters from Azle FD, La Junta VFD, Eagle Mountain VFD, Lake Worth FD, and Blue Mound FD responded to fi ght the fi re, and the American Red Cross was called in to provide for Photo by Carla Noah Stutsman those firefighters, as well.

Lakeside invests in water system By CARLA nOAH STuTSMAn Many residents in the town of Lakeside remember 2005 well. That was the year the town came close to running out of water. Since then, the town council has educated itself and studied its options. Mayor Pat Jacob says he believes the work the council has done and actions it has taken provide solutions that will see the town’s water infrastructure – and its supply – through the next 50 years. The council recently issued $2.5 million in Certificates of Obligation (COs) to fund improvements to its water system and to construct a new aboveground water storage facility just off Confederate Park Road. Jacob says he expects residents will begin seeing that storage facility go up toward the end of this year. The facility is anticipated to go “on line” in the third quarter (July through September) of 2015. “The capacity of any wa-

ter system is mandated by the Texas Commission for Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and when you approach that level, you are no longer compliant,” Jacob explained. “That’s where we were – we had an old water system that needed upgrades.” The council met extensively throughout 2013 to review an in-depth survey it conducted for more than six months, gather information from its engineers, study its options, and come up with the best possible plan to provide water service to its citizens, Jacob said. That plan included the issuance of the COs, construction of the overhead water storage facility, improvements to the existing water system, and an inter-local agreement with the city of Azle to provide additional water in times of heavy water usage, Jacob explained. “The town of Lakeside gets 100 percent of its water from wells,” Jacob said. “If our wells hit maximum capacity and we need more water, we have a plan in place to get up to three million gallons more each day.”

The agreement takes a load off Lakeside’s wells and allows the town better control of its water system. A lengthy study of area water rates allowed the council to structure new water rates of its own. And while the rates are higher than its citizens used to pay, they are manageable. The funds will allow the town to pay for the upgrades to its water system and an ongoing maintenance program to keep that system in good operating condition going forward. Jacob pointed out that the town of Lakeside is not a part of the Tarrant Regional Water District, and therefore, is not required to follow its water restrictions like most areas around Eagle Mountain Lake. However, the town has established its own water conservation plan that allows residents to water two days each week. The town also requires drilling operations to bring any water used in the drilling process from elsewhere, thereby preventing any further load on its wells. All of those things are part of

what makes the town of Lakeside unique, Jacob said. Like its citizens, who are, in large part, retirees and who are mostly happy, they don’t need bumper stickers that read “Pray for me, I drive Highway 199.” Jacob also pointed out that the town of Lakeside’s Certificate of Convenience and Necessity (CCN), which essentially details the area its water system is required to serve, is for an area that extends well outside the town limits. “Our CCN extends all the way to Casino Beach,” Jacob said. Jacob lauded members of the town council for the countless hours they put in on the project. “I can’t emphasize enough the amount of work they all put in,” Jacob said. “We started with a water system that was aging and at the limits of its capacity, and we’re making the improvements necessary to bring that system up to code and to last for at least another 50 years. “That was my goal – to get it compliant and functional for the next 50 years.”

Reno Council approves funds for city well By nATALie GenTRy The Reno City Council voted Monday, March 17 to approve an additional $59,190 toward the construction of water well at the city’s main water storage site on Ladybird Lane. This well would ensure a continued water supply to the city in case of a power outage. “If the city were to lose power, we could put a backup generator on this well and maintain water pressure,” said Scott Passmore, Reno’s director of public works. “The well pumps directly into the main water storage so we could keep water to the city.” The next phase of this process is being overseen by David Perkins of KSA Engineer, Inc. – the consulting firm for

this project – and includes delivering the award letters to the contractors. “The reason we needed to proceed with this project and not wait for next week is because the bids can only be open for 60 days,” Perkins said. “We opened the project to bids on Feb. 6 and it takes some time to issue contracts to contractors and get them back.” The drilling was awarded to Watts Drilling. The company has until the end of the physical year to finish the well. In the past 7 years, the city has received four water grants for $275,000 each. The City of Reno will contribute a total of $91,190 to the project.

AHS senior claimed in Nebraska auto accident n AHS, FROM PAGE ONE.

(Moreno) Dovel. Timothy and his family made their home in Texas for most of his life, where he attended Azle High School, before moving to Ogallala in 2010. Timothy attended Ogallala High School his junior year, but maintained a strong desire to return to Azle to graduate with his former classmates in Azle. He returned from Nebraska to Azle, where he lived with longtime family friends Natalie and Mike Jimenez and their children, Drake and Haley. Timothy was set to graduate from AHS this May. He was an office aide in the high school counselors’ office, where he was called “a good

kid” and “well-liked by students and faculty.” Natalie Jimenez said on Tuesday that Timothy had finalized his enlistment in the Army National Guard Thursday, March 6. He left for Nebraska on Friday, excited to see his parents. “He called me at 5 a.m. Saturday morning to let me know he made it there safe,” Jimenez said. Her family – especially her son, Drake, who had known Timothy since the boys were 4 years old – was devastated to learn of his tragic death just a few days later, she said. The Jimenez family held a candlelight vigil for Timothy Wednesday, March 12, at their home.

What started out as a few close friends turned into a crowd of more than 40, she said. The Jimenez family also traveled to Nebraska for the funeral, leading a caravan of four vehicles filled with 16 youth, including their own two children. “Timothy’s parents were surprised and very honored that those kids made that trip just to be with them during their loss,” Jimenez said. “They made friends with Timothy’s Nebraska friends, and the Dovel family invited them all to sleep in their basement – it meant so much to them that they were there.” Several of Timothy’s friends

from both Nebraska and Azle spoke at his wake. Tuesday morning, March 18, members of the AHS senior class as well as some of Timothy’s closest friends released 50 red balloons from the school in his honor. Dovel was also honored at Tuesday night’s soccer game, and many wore red in his honor. Jimenez said a memorial service will be held in Azle, although it will likely be a month or so from now. “Because he had actually sworn in to the Army National Guard, they will provide full honors for the service; however, they require 30 days’ notice,” Jimenez explained. “His Master Sergeant actually

Survivors include his parents, Timothy and Ana Lucia Dovel of Ogallala, Nebraska; three sisters, Tiffany Dovel of Texas, Niki Dovel of New York and Marie Dovel of Texas; maternal grandparents, Cesar Julio and Nelly Moreno of Fusagasuga, Colombia, South America; his guardian family of Texas, Natalie and Mike Jimenez and their children, Drake and Haley of Azle, along with many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. A memorial has been estab-

lished in his memory. Condolences may be shared at prairiehillsfuneralhome.com. Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, March 15, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Ogallala with Father Bryan Ernest as celebrant. Visitation for memorial book signatures was conducted Friday, March 14 at the Prairie Hills Funeral Home in Ogallala. A Christian Wake Service was held Friday at 7 p.m. at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Ogallala. A private family inurnment will be held in Azle at a later date. Prairie Hills Funeral Home of Ogallala is in charge of arrangements.

Q&A will focus on recent earthquakes The Steering Committee for the Concerned Citizens for Responsible Industry (CCRI) is busy in several different areas. One focus is directed toward involving the nearby cities and sharing information and research. On Friday, March 28, CCRI will host an Earthquake Candidate Public Forum from 6-9 p.m. at Boswell High School, 5805 W Bailey Boswell Road in Saginaw. Co-sponsors of the forum include the Northwest Republican Club, Texans for Government Transparency, North Central Communities Alliance, and Fort Worth Citizens for Government Transparency.

Participating races include Governor, Railroad Commission, Texas Senate District #30, Texas Representative District #61, Texas Representative District #93, and Tarrant Regional Water District. Other elected officials are invited to attend and be recognized. The group declares that this is an effort to accomplish two goals: to inform and educate the candidates and elected officials as to the seriousness of the recent 34 earthquakes in the Northwest Fort Worth region to get the community involved and encourage voter registration and participation.

CCRI said party chairs from four counties – Tarrant, Parker, Wise and Denton – will attend the forum. The honorable Clyde Picht, former Fort Worth city councilman, will be the moderator. Mayors and city council members of affected nearby cities, along with County Commissioners and County Judges, are invited. Voter registration forms will be in the lobby of the Boswell High School Auditorium. CCRI says it is non-partisan and invites all party candidates for the races listed. For more information or questions, call Darlia Hobbs, forum coordinator, at 817-237-7972.

Sales tax revenue generally up in area cities Exception is Sanctuary; Azle CCPD sees slight drop BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN Texas Comptroller Susan Combs said state sales tax revenue in February was $2.2 billion, up 5.8 percent compared to February 2013. Combs will send cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts their March local sales tax allocations totaling $553 million, up 4.1 percent compared to March 2013. The sales tax figures represent January sales reported by monthly tax filers. The city of Azle, following a couple of slow months, saw a nice 3.13 percent jump in its March sales tax revenue. It will receive $149,602 in March, compared with $145,058 in March of 2013. With year-to-date revenues of $526,390, the city is up 0.97 percent from 2013 year-todate revenues of $521,323. Azle’s Crime Control and Prevention District, on the other hand, received $28,344 in March, down 0.83 percent from March 2013 sales tax revenue of $28,581. The District’s year-to-date sales tax revenue of $97,920 is 0.27 percent less than last year at the same time, when revenues were at $98,193. Azle’s Municipal Development District collected $27,135 in March, bringing its 2014 year-to-date collections to $89,600. There are no comparisons to make since the district just began collecting sales tax in October 2013. Reno saw a healthy increase with its March revenue of $6,946, 5.59 percent more than the

$6,578 it received in March 2013. Year-to-date revenues of $18,424 are still down 3.07 percent from 2013, when it had collected $19,010 through March. Sanctuary received March sales tax revenue of $905, a drop of 10.97 percent from March 2013 revenues of $1,017. For the year, it’s collected $2,966. Compared with 2013 collections through March of $3,248, that’s a decrease of 8.66 percent. Parker County is looking at a healthy increase of 14.76 percent from its March 2013 revenue of $498,951 to a March check for $572,643. That brings the county’s year-to-date revenues of $1,831,623 up 11.87 percent over last year’s revenues through March of $1,637,194. In Tarrant County, the town of Lakeside continues to collect sales tax at almost double its 2013 levels. The town’s March check for $10,315 is 96 percent higher than its March 2013 check for $5,262. So far in 2014, Lakeside has received $41,144 – that’s 107.46 percent more than the amount it had received through March 2013 of $19,832. Pelican Bay, too, is seeing an encouraging trend, although not nearly as much as Lakeside’s. The Bay received March sales tax revenue of $1,469, 7.28 percent higher than its March 2013 check of $1,369. In 2014, the city has collected $4,744. Compared with year-to-date 2013 collections of $4,322, that a 9.75 percent increase.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT the words to what we were trying to sing. We had about 33 here for the party – it was nice. We have another AARP Safe Driving Class this week on Thursday, March 20. Deloris Little of Senior Citizen Services will be out to meet with five of our folks to review their medications to be sure they are not interfering with each other. We had five folks sign up to meet with her and their names will go in a pot for a $25 gift card for coming in and taking advantage of this program. We had a good turnout for our monthly birthday and anniversary party March 12. Hope and Johnny came and played music for us. We really appreciate them giving of their time

for this each month. We love having them. They are all good singers. I especially enjoy Hope and her sister Alicia singing together. March 21 is Produce Day and everyone is excited about whatever they’ll be getting. It’s a lot of good stuff and they love our Food Bank and Produce Days. Next Monday will be our “No Hot SCS Meal Day.” Haven’t decided what we’ll be fixing yet. We really had a good turnout March 14 for our annual Food Handlers and Volunteer Training Classes. We had a lot of new folks this time. Come by for a cup of coffee and get a March menu and schedule of activities. You may see someone you know – who knows?

A Neon Glow Dance for 5th and 6th grade students who attend Azle and Hoover Elementary Schools will be held at Forte Junior High, 6-9 p.m. Friday, April 25. Admission is $5 per student. BY DARLENE HOLMES How lovely the day has been here at the Senior Center. It brought a lot of folks out into the park, each group doing their own particular thing. Some are playing disc golf, some are flying airplanes, some walking their dogs. Our park stays quite busy and it’s so pretty here. On St. Patrick’s Day, we had ice cream and cake after lunch. Most of the seniors wore some shades of green so they wouldn’t get pinched! One of our regular participants, Carol Langen, brought in her keyboard and sang and played some Irish music for us. We really do appreciate it when she does that. She also made us sheet music or rather

Dr. Crabtree also enjoys fitting all types of contact lenses. “I have newer, better, exciting tools in my arsenal all the time for fitting contact lenses, including the newest multifocals to allow near and distance vision, the newest toric lenses for high astigmatism, and the most proven lenses for dry eyes,” he said. “The availability and proficiency in fitting these newer lenses equals more and more happy patients. “Many people have tried and failed with contact lenses in the past, because they were unhappy with the vision or the comfort. Being a contact lens wearer myself, I understand their concerns.” Dr. Crabtree’s unique ability to identify with patients means he treats everyone the way he would want to be treated if he were sitting in that chair – from the exam to the prescription. Don’t hide your green!

I love animals, they’re delicious (!!)

B

D

id you know that Thursday, March 20 is the annual “Great American Meatout Day”? I didn’t think so. It’s the 30th one, yet, like you, I’ve never heard of it either. The event is sponsored by FARM, the Farm Animals Rights Movement. Kudos to them for the catchy acronym, but I’m gonna pass on the 2014 Meatout. There are all kinds of animal protection agencies around these days. PETA hogs the headlines (rimshot!), but FARM toils away in the journalistic Back Forty (rimshot! again – I’m just gonna quit saying rimshot now because much more wordplay follows – I’ll just insert a double exclamation point [!!].) It sounds ON YOUR fishy (!!), but MARK FARM memMark K. Campbell bers are working to “end the use of animals for food through public education and grassroots activism.” Man, there ain’t no party like a FARM Meatout party, huh? This is another group of folks that thinks that eating a beet is better than eating beef. They are wrong. I don’t care how much cream gravy you put on a beet, an identically adorned chicken-fried steak is going to taste a whole lot better. Now, I’ll sheepishly (!!) admit that a few vegetables taste OK and some fruits, too. But to live your entire existence without barbecue or a New York Strip or chicken enchiladas seems to be a waste of life and kinda cuckoo (!! [??]). I’ll admit it: I’m too chicken (!!) to be a vegetarian. FARM members are also very concerned about raising awareness of ingesting a “non-violent plant-based diet.” A “non-violent diet”? True, I’ve eaten some pretty tough round steak through the years that required some dental battles, but I always won. These vegetarians’ web site is going whole hog (!!), listing all six cities across America that issued official proclamations for Meatout Day. Dallas joins major metropolises like Kalamazoo, Michigan and Moorhead, Minnesota. To be fair, I have eaten some fakemeat products. I’ve been known to pig out (!!) on some frozen pseudo-chicken patties. Also, no one really knows what’s in a hot dog – the meat content is always questionable so I’m counting it as half vegetarian. On March 20, FARM is seeking 30,000 people to not eat meat that day, resulting in sparing the lives of 8,000 animals. For one day. FARM might one day get put in its place by PETA if the former keeps trying to horn in (!!) on the latter’s publicity. PETA is the cock (!!) of the walk when it comes to animal protection and FARM might find itself ducking (!!) out of the way and being put out to pasture (!!). OK, I’m (well) done (!!).

It's historic, and also modern, and it’s the Texas State Guard

re readers aware that Texas not only has its National Guard reserve units, but it also has a Texas State Guard (TXSG)? Actually, three branches of the Texas military forces exist, the Texas Army National Guard, the Texas Air National Guard and the Texas State Guard. Only the first two can be called to active duty by the president of the United States. The Texas State Guard can only be called up to operate in the state by the governor. All three of these Texas military forces report to the Texas Adjutant General, and the Commanderin-Chief is the governor of Texas. Approximately 35 states also have such a state military organization. The Mission of the Texas State Guard is to provide “highly trained soldiers for defense support of civil authorities by providing ready military forces during state declared emergencies, to assist state and local authorities in homeland security, community service and with medical services.” The volunteers of the Texas State Guard come from all walks of life and can be both men and women with no previous military service. It consists of over 2,000 volunteers organized into four components: Army, Air, Medical and Maritime. There are six Civil Affairs Regiments, two Air Wings, a Medical Brigade and a Maritime Regiment. Individual units are assigned throughout the state. Members train one weekend each month and attend an annual four-day military exercise. Occasions for which the TXSG has been called to active duty in recent years have been for hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and wild fires. Headquar-

ters are located at Camp Mabry in Austin. Volunteer enrollment surged after 9/11 when Texans saw an increased threat to the United States. In citing its own history, the webpage PAGES FROM of the TXSG its oriWESTERN traces gin to February HISTORY 18, 1823 when Emperor of J’Nell L. Pate the Mexico authorized Stephen F. Austin to organize colonists into a militia to “pursue tranquility.” The volunteer unit soon was protecting the early settlers from Indians. In 1827 the militia was used to put down an attempt that sought to separate a part of Texas away from Mexico called the Fredonian rebellion. Austin led troops to crush the effort. Actually, the Texas Rangers also trace their origin to the same year of 1823 as Austin ordered local volunteers to “range out” to protect settlements from Indians. Both the state guard and the Texas Rangers have been “off again, on again” organizations through the years. Governor Edmund J. Davis in 1871 cancelled the Rangers and created a State Guard during Reconstruction after the Civil War. It ceased after Davis left office, and the Texas Rangers returned as a law enforcement unit. A national movement to reinstate state guards for local use only came

following the Spanish-American War in 1898. In that war the state militias or guardsmen were called for national service, leaving states vulnerable with no local troops available to help with disasters or threats. However, the state did not create a state guard during World War I to replace the nationalized troops who had been called up, but it did so in World War II. The guard was continued for a time after World War II and then abolished. The Texas State Guard was reorganized as Military Police in the 1970s. Then in 1993 the TXSG was reorganized into regiments. Of the six regiments, the “Panther City Fencibles” train in the Fort Worth area and consist of volunteers from Fort Worth, Arlington, Denton, Wichita Falls and Mineral Wells. A military group called the Fencibles existed in Fort Worth in the 1890s and practiced drilling. They were honored to be invited to participate in the inaugural parade for President Grover Cleveland in 1893. At a recent Texas State Historical Association convention in San Antonio I learned that two of my friends, both Ph.D. history professors in Texas universities, are volunteer TXSG soldiers. Not only are they good examples to their students (if they know), but my friends are sort of living the history that they teach. One of them told me that the Texas State Guard is the largest and most active of the 35 state groups. Well, I would expect that of Texas, wouldn't you? ack in the day, the number one priority on March 17 was to wear green that was subtly hidden amongst other dominant colors. Everyone knew that if you had the misfortune of forgetting to wear green on St. Patrick ’s Day, you were going to be pinched all day long. But in my elementary school (seriously back in the day), there was another rule: if someone pinched you and you were wearing green, you got to pinch them back. As a result, we strategically avoided the blatantly kelly green shirt, opting for a deep forest green pinstripe that was barely visible on the orange backLIFE MATTERS ground. That was Gerry Lewis back in the day. All that pinching now would result in a charge of bullying and somebody’s getting a suspension. Back in the day when I was a pastor (not as far back), one of our youth group’s high school students came to church on Wednesday evening on St. Paddy’s wearing a green t-shirt that said, “Kiss me. I’m Irish.” I enveloped him in a bear hug and planted a big ol’ sloppy one on his cheek right in front of God and a fellowship hall full of church members eating supper. Everyone got a big laugh. I had the kind of relationship with that young man that I knew I could get away with it. We are friends to this day (although I’m pretty sure he burned that shirt when he got home). I grew up in a town whose school colors were green and white. I have lived for most of my adult life in a town whose school colors are the same. Folks in these towns wear their green proudly many days of the year, and on those Friday nights in the fall it is almost expected. Pinching, of course is likely to result in either a fistfight or a date, so it is not encouraged. Some of you have gotten this far and are wondering, “Is he ever going to make a point?” I often wonder that myself as I wander through these weekly compositions. My point is this: Don’t hide your loyalty. When you think of St. Patrick, what comes to mind? Green! Unfortunately, it may be limited to shamrocks, green beer, the Emerald Isle, and pinching. We don’t often give much thought to the fifth century missionary known as “The Apostle of Ireland.” Though none of us are likely to ever have a day set aside in our honor, we are all noticed by someone. Someone is watching to see where our loyalties lie. Someone is noticing the consistency (or lack thereof) of our lifestyle. Here’s a great question: How can we wear our faith “colors” as proudly as we wear those school colors? Jesus said it this way, “In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” (Matthew 5:16, NLT) Every day is Jesus day. Don’t hide your colors.

Many folks registered but few voted in primaries

L

ooking back at the March 4 primaries, Texas boasted 13,601,324 voters registered in time to cast a ballot. An estimated 9 percent of the overall number of registered voters (about 1.3 million) voted in the Republican primary and 4 percent (500,000) voted in the Democratic primary. Runoffs between the top two vote-getting candidates in a number of contests are scheduled for Tuesday, May 27, the day after the federal holiday, Memorial Day. Votes count big in any election, but as historic participation records reveal, the portion of the electorate that actually votes in runoffs is an even thinner slice of the whole. And voter turnout is especially low in mid-term (non-presidential election year) runoffs, as those set for May 27 will be. Usually about 2 percent of registered voters cast a ballot in those. Next, let’s look at the fi nal component of the March 4 primary ballot — propositions — refl ecting interests of the Texas

Texas Ag offi ce seeks themed quilt squares

A

quilt block competition is underway, conducted by the Texas Agriculture Depart-

ment. Commission Todd Staples is seeking quilt squares with the theme “Gifts of the Gulf.” Quilt blocks are being sought that depict scenes from the Texas Gulf Coast and demonstrates how the region has shaped lives and created memories. Coastal squares could cover topics like tourism, seafood,

wildlife, or the coast itself. Entrants must use Texas natural fi bers like cotton, wool, and leather. Participant packets cost $20 each and they contain the natural fi bers to be used in the square design, tips and techniques for creating the block, and more information about the contest theme. A limited number of packets are available by calling 877-99-GOTEX or by visiting gotexan.org. The deadline for entries is June 13.

Winning blocks will be incorporated in a design by a Denton woman. Then the quilt will be assembled by a woman from Flower Mound. The creation will be displayed at the 2014 State Fair of Texas. After the end of the fair, the quilt will become part of the Agriculture Department’s quilt collection. Previous years’ quilts can be seen at gotexan.org. Part of the 2013 quilt – “Agriculture is Your Culture” – contains a square from Azle’s Jackie Thompson.

The boys will see the fourth place team from 11-4A while the Lady Hornets will tangle with the runner-up on either March 24 or 25. Azle’s regular season finales pitted AHS against Springtown in the last 12-4A matches. A moment of silence was conducted at the gathering in memory of slain student Timothy Dovel who was killed in an accident over Spring Break. Softball ladies rally to stay perfect in District 5-4A action A gigantic, final inning comeback kept the Lady Hornet softball team flawless in district play. Playing at home over Spring Break on March 11, Azle (18-4, 4-0) entered the bottom of the seventh three outs away from a 7-1 defeat at the hands of Denton Guyer.

However, in what could be a precursor to a magical season, the Lady Hornets poured seven runs across the plate and came away with an improbable 8-7 win at Jim Bob Nations Field of Dreams. AHS led early, 1-0, and that stood up until the visitors tied the game in the top of the

fourth. Then Guyer kept scoring every inning until the final frame arrived with Azle behind 7-1. When the dust settled, the Lady Hornets had kept their 5-4A record clean. Coach Tracy Tadlock said that happened mainly because of walks and Guyer miscues.

He said, “It was great to see the kids battle; they showed a lot of heart coming from that far behind.” But, Tadlock said he impressed upon his squad that rallying from such a deficit is rare. “We are not going to be able to come from behind like that on a regular basis.” Makenzi Harris (8-2) got the win. She struck out 10 batters and walked no one. Four Lady Hornets doubled: Sarah Brown, Bailee Carter, Rebekah Teel, and Harris. Collecting vital RBI were Taylor Anderson, Samantha Bradley, Nicole Aniasco, Brown, and, with 2, Teel. On March 14, Azle faced Wichita Falls and Old High was no threat as AHS rolled to a 10-0 victory. Bradley (10-2) picked up the win; she fanned 6 and walked zero. Valarie Matlock walloped a triple and collected 3 RBI while both Bradley and Aniasco doubled. Bradley capped off a fine outing with 2 RBI. AHS baseball collect wins A district victory buoyed the baseball varsity. After a 12-2 loss at Wichita Falls March 11, Azle (5-10-1, 1-2) skunked visiting Brewer 11-0 on March 14. At Old High, Trevor Boiles belted a triple and Trey Ramos doubled. But the Hornets got behind early and did not catch up. At home against Brewer, a 9-run third inning buried the Bears. Three Hornets had 2-hit games: Tyler Albers, Ramos, lady Hornet Hannah rezabek lets a high pitch sail past. azle stunned Guyer with 7 and Boiles. Ramos’ triple was the big hit; final inning runs to beat the lady Wildcats, 8-7, march 11. Photo by Mark K. Campbell

he went on to score 3 times. Boiles had 2 RBI to go with a pair of doubles and Albers batted home one teammate with Tommy Kay and Tyler Flynn. Kay got the complete game 1-hitter, fanning 4 Brewer batters. Subvarsities – The JV and freshman squads also played 5-4A contests. The JV won a slugfest over Wichita Falls, 14-13. Alex Newton was one of 5 Hornets with 2 hits; he was the only one with 3 RBI. Also collecting 2 safeties:

Shane Drolet, Dylan Robinson, Logan McPherson, and Noah Laduca. AHS scored 8 runs in the final inning to secure the win. Brewer edged the AHS JV 6-4. Azle got just 2 hits, by Zach Petter and Laduca; the latter picked up 2 ribbies. The 9th tumbled to Brewer 10-4. Sam Rodgers swatted 2 hits and Micah Rodgers walked twice. On the mound for AHS were Alexander Humphrey and Trevor McIntire.

Movie Man

Wednesday, March 19, 2014

Ultra-violent 300 sequel a marvel in 3-D The Movie Man jumped back a week to catch 300: Rise of an Empire for two reasons. One, he really wasn’t interested in Need for Speed. Two, he heard that Rise of an Empire was great in 3-D. Man, that’s true. About the film Everyone has some sort of movie genre they prefer. The Movie Man is partial to comedies, sci-fi /horror, and dramas. He’s not crazy about war movies or westerns. And a romantic comedy must have some sort of juicer – a favorite actor or director – to get the Movie Man to go that route. Historical epics are somewhere in the middle. That’s where the fi rst300 (2007, Movie Man No. 708, a 6) fell. Seven years later is a bit long in returning a story to the screen. But that original 300 did great worldwide. In America, it raked in $210.6 million. The total take was $456 million after factoring in the $245.4 overseas. The international box offi ce charts are full of anomalies. Sometimes a movie that doesn’t do that great in the U.S. is a major hit elsewhere. A recent example of that is the mysterious worldwide love for Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012, MM #991, 3 – it was terribly unfunny). The movie was gigantic elsewhere; 81.7 percent of its $879.6 million take came from foreign markets. In the U.S., it made $161.3 million. Overseas, the number was a staggering $718.3 million. Another example: Pacific Rim (2013, MM #1,044, 6) was considered a dud here in the states with a take of just $101.8 million. But in distant cinemas, it hauled in $310 million – that’s a 31.4/68.6 percent difference. A case of an American “fl op” highlights the U.S. versus the world concept: John Carter

(2012, MM #973, 5). While it limped around the U.S. fi nally taking in just $73 million, it made 74.2 percent of its $283.5 million haul overseas. The fl ip side of that coin – where a movie does better here than overseas (keeping in mind that it might not get as massive a release as others) – is The Lorax (2012, MM #972, 6). Domestically, the movie performed much better with a $214 million take compared to the rest of the world at $127.1, a 62.7/37.3 split. One more box offi ce note: Frozen (2013, MM #1,064, 7) will soon become the 19th movie to reach the $400 million mark in America. (Excluding old movies adjusted for box offi ce; otherwise there are 107 U.S. pictures ahead of it.) The plot Persian god-king Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), urged on by his No. 1 military leader Artemisia (Eva Green), decides to put Greece in its place by invading. Themistocles (Sullivan Stapleton) knows Greece’s states must unite to be able to handle the mighty assault. Sparta, famed for its mighty warriors and expansive navy, isn’t interested, however. Even a visit there by Stapleton to see the

Movie Man Queen Gorgo (Lena Headley) goes for naught. Stapleton rallies his heroes while helplessly out-numbered. He wins a couple of minor victories at sea. The Spartans’ brutal defeat elsewhere (from the original movie) gives Stapleton’s soldiers a rally cry. But another trip to see Headley to use Sparta’s navy seems to fall on deaf ears. Or does it?...

or ashes dancing through sunlight during lulls in the action. One scene is really cool. Santoro steps out from a high palace window to urge his minions to war. The camera comes up from behind then rises above him to reveal a gigantic mass of people below. The shot is disorienting and effective like those from the great Gravity (2013, MM #1056, 9 Best of Year) that unsettle you. That’s when 3-D works best. What works Green is the breakout from This is one of the great 3-D this movie. It’s rare for a wommovies of all-time. Not every hero wears a cape By Natalie geNtry “He loves Superman – everything is Superman,” Lauren Garcia said about her little brother Timothy Wilson. And because of that fact, the 3-year-old’s birthday party will be decorated in hues of blue red and yellow, just like the AllAmerican hero. Deborah Wilson and Garcia – Timmy’s mother and sister – think that the Man of Steel and other superheroes are the perfect themes for the party that will take place on March 23 at the Little Angels Christian

Daycare. Why? Because Timmy is a hero in their eyes for his constant smile and optimism as he faces one of humanities most feared foes – cancer. A villain appears Timmy was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) on Dec. 30, 2012. According to the National Cancer Institute website ALL is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow and the most common type of cancer in children.

“This type of cancer usually gets worse quickly if it is not treated,” the site said. Timmy was three months away from turning three when he was diagnosed. “We didn’t have family history because he and (his brothers) Andrew and Jakob are adopted.” Deborah Wilson said. “We’ve had Timmy since he was 7 weeks old, and there was nothing wrong when he was an infant; everything developed on time.” Then in early December of 2012 Timmy began to complain

that his tummy was hurting. “We were told he was constipated,” Wilson said. “Even the x-rays looked like it.” Then on New Year’s Eve the pain became too much to simply be constipation. “He couldn’t take more than two steps before he would fall forward,” Wilson said. “So we took him to the hospital and within 15 minutes and they came back and said it’s bad. “You know when a Chaplin and a social worker come in with the doctor that something is wrong,” she continued. After rounds of chemotherapy, the family of 12 thought they had beaten the cruel disease when Timmy went into remission. But a year later the cancer returned. A second attack “A couple of days before last Christmas we got the call that not only did he relapse, but that the cancer was more aggressive than when we started,” Wilson said. “We began trying more aggressive drugs – some were even adult drugs – to try to fight [the cancer] quick enough.” Then Timmy began to reacting to the chemotherapy. “He began to develop allergies to the medications,” Wilson said. “The doctors consulted with a specialist in Alabama to make a drug for him.” This combination of medications worked for the toddler, initially. Then three weeks ago it

Be a Hero; Donate Bone Marrow The easiest way to help those in search of a bone marrow is to join a registry. This is the first step to being the cure for patients with blood cancers like leukemia and other marrow diseases. It is also a commitment to take the next step if a patient needs you to donate cells for a lifesaving bone marrow transplant. Joining a registry requires a sample of cells, usually collected by swabbing the inside of your cheek. Be The Match, operated by the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) is a nonprofit organization that helps doctors locate matching donors for people in need of a bone marrow transplant. The NMDP is the largest registry. Other registries that specialize in finding donors for specific ethnic groups also exist. When a search for a donor is performed, every registry in the world is examined. Go to bethematch.org for more information about donating bone marrow.

The family believes that, barring any changes, Timmy should be at the party. “The doctors say he should be able to come,” Garcia said. “They say it without saying it: This might be his last birthday.” But the family doesn’t focus on the negative possibilities. Instead they live in the moment and celebrate the positive – usually with Timmy leading the way. “Timmy has such a great attitude,” Garcia said. “Other than his appearance, you can’t tell that he’s sick.” In fact, Timmy even likes his new hair style. “He thinks he looks like his Daddy because Daddy’s bald too,” Garcia said.

Master Gardeners offer solutions The annual Master Gardener Plant Sale is becoming a Parker County tradition. Every spring, the group gathers a list of plants that are proven winners for our area. Some of the plants come from our local nurseries, but many of them are grown by these masters, in gardens right here in Parker County. The event is more than just a fundraiser for the organization. It’s an opportunity to bring your gardening questions and fi nd real solutions. The parking lot isn’t just fi lled with plants. It’s fi lled with master gardeners who are ready to help

A power greater than fear Timmy and the rest of the Wilsons attribute their ability to continue fi ghting this fi ght to their faith. “We’ve let Timmy know that he isn’t a victim; he was chosen by God,” Wilson said. “He was picked for a reason. Maybe we’ll know in time, maybe we won’t, but he was chosen.” In fact, the staff at the hospital has recognized the strength of his belief and has taken to calling Timmy the “little preacher.” “Since he can’t leave his room, even on Sunday, he tells anyone and everyone who comes in his room either the story of Adam and Eve or of Noah’s Ark.” Garcia said “Those are his favorite stories,
