Straight-line winds wreak damage locally BY NATALIE GENTRY The weather in Springtown and surrounding areas turned wild and dangerous May 7 with a combination of high straight-line winds, hail, lightning, and even funnel cloud sightings. While reports of tornadoes were confirmed in Wise County, the majority of the damage in Springtown was caused by high straight-line winds, even though some residents were convinced a tornado had touched down south of Springtown. “I spoke to the Parker County fire marshal and the emergency management coordinator,” County Commissioner for Precinct 1, George Conley said. “After looking at the damage and the debris pattern they determined that it was straight-line winds that caused the damage.” Another concern for residents was the flooding caused by more than an inch of rainfall in about an hour. As creek beds overflowed, roadways became perilous and residents were warned not to try and cross through fast moving water on the roads. While the cleanup from the storm has been slow but steady, meteorologists warn that severe weather risks aren’t over. Rain is predicted everyday into next Strong straight-line winds destroyed this 100-year-old barn on Old Springtown Road during a storm May 7; it later dropped a funnel cloud nearby that eventually did some damage in Decatur. See Page 3B for a photo of that cloud. Photo by Natalie Gentry week.

Area VFDs help with nocturnal creek rescue BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN A Kenny Chesney anthem pays homage to the sometimes reckless days of youth, proclaiming: “Had no excuses for the things that we’d done, We were brave, we were crazy, we were mostly young.” That may be the case for six young people ages 18 to 22 who were rescued from the banks of Walnut Creek near Reno in the wee hours of Monday morning, May 11. The six young people – three men and three women – were cold, wet and had a few minor scratches but all refused medical transport after a rescue operation that involved multiple fire departments and police agencies. What fun? The six adventurers decided it would be fun to take advantage of the raging waters of Walnut Creek to go “tubing.” They put in Sunday evening around 7:30 p.m. at what is commonly called the “old swinging bridge” – even though the swinging bridge was replaced decades ago with a modern one – on Jay Bird Lane (FM 2257). Arrangements had been made with friends to pick them up at their destination: the Reno Road LaJunta VFD Chief Tony Scarlato (left) relays location information to a Saginaw firefighter as a team prepares to walk in to Azle’s Walnut Creek. In retrospect Azle Fire Marshal Kenny Wilson and Firefighters Cliff Porch and John Behm comprised the swift-water rescue team that went into Walnut Creek. Wilson said the best news from the event is that all six tubers were wearing some type of personal flotation device or life vest. “They said they had gone over some rapids and several of them got knocked off their tubes,” Wilson said. “Just downstream from there, a tree down across the creek caught

the rest of them.” Wilson said all six were “extremely lucky” to have survived the incident at all, and the fact they were all virtually uninjured is remarkable. As radar showed potentially heavy rains moving back into the area May 13, Wilson advised that it’s just never a good idea to enter moving water of any kind. Obstacles underwater can entangle people and incapacitate them very quickly, he added. “A few inches of water can float a car off the roadway. The inherent danger isn’t just to the people involved, but can endanger the lives of those who try to rescue them, as well,” Wilson said. “Moving water is very unpredictable, and even those of us who train constantly for situations just like this don’t enter the water until we’ve studied it carefully. “Even we don’t get into rushing water except as a last resort.”

Straight-line winds did a number on property south and east of Springtown. A huge tree barely missed a porch and limbs were ripped free and blown about. Crews were out May 12 to help clear debris.

The rescue The Briar-Reno Volunteer Fire Department began searching for the six people, with help from some Reno citizens. After a couple of hours with no luck, they realized they needed help. Briar-Reno VFD Chief Shannon Smithers called for the activation of the newly- formed Northwest Emergency Response Organization (NERO). NERO is made up of fire departments in Tarrant County north of Interstate 30 and west of Interstate 35, excluding the Fort Worth Fire Department. Each department has pledged its help to the others as needed in emergency rescue situations, hazardous materials, and any other situation that requires a technical response. By 11 p.m. Sunday night, the Reno Fire Station had become a buzzing command center filled with firefighters from Azle, Lake Worth, Saginaw, and LaJunta. Friends and family of the six missing tubers gathered there, along with citizens who wanted to assist in the search. B-RVFD had command of the operation, and worked with firefighters from the other responding agencies to map out the area and devise a plan to rescue the rafters. Around midnight, with news that spotters had heard cries for help near a pad site off Wonder Drive, the rescue party left the command center and headed there. On Wonder Drive, a swiftwater rescue team from the Azle Fire Department went into Walnut Creek, where it located all six rafters – alive and with only minor injuries – on the opposite bank of the creek. Because the rafters had climbed the steep bank almost 30 feet high, as well as to avoid bringing them back across the raging water, it was decided to send another team in from the

Coach lauds track team to Optimist Club

Springtown Epigraph

Eagle Mountain Lake Returns to Normal

by mark k. campbell Coach Brad Legan has been directing track squads at Springtown High School for more than a decade. On Saturday, May 16, he

will take four Porcupines to the state track meet in Austin. The SHS squads have had a solid season. “Our definite goal was to win district,” he said. That objective was accomplished despite a late start for some athletes still competing in other sports and crazy spring weather. Success at district continued at the Area meet where 14 different athletes qualified in 14 events. Especially fulfilling was beating Kennedale in the final race of the meet – which propelled SHS to a team victory. After qualifying four more athletes for Austin, Legan is ready to see what they can do. “Our times are extremely For years, Eagle Mountain Lake has been low – sometimes over 10 feet down from its conservation level. HowTrack coach Brad Legan will take four athletes to competitive; we’re going down ever, during this wet spring, EML returned to normal May 12. Porcupine quartet off to state track meet in Austin Springfield to compete in a trio of events by mark k. campbell Springtown High School has not had a state sports champion since the Ryan sisters in tennis in the 1980’s. Will that change Saturday? Super hurdler Dillon Springfield enters the state meet in Austin May 16 with the fastest regional time in Texas in 4A. He will also race in the 300 hurdles later in the day where he holds the third fastest time. Then Springfield will enter Mike A. Myers Stadium on the UT campus a third time for the

4x400 relay race where the senior runs the anchor leg. Anything can happen in track – a dropped or poor baton pass or a hit hurdle. However, Springfield has been strong in the 110 distance all season; in Austin, he will run at 6:55 p.m., weather permitting. Last year at state, the Porcupine finished fourth in 14.41 seconds. He won district, Area, and Region I to reach the elite meet. Coach Brad Legan said

Springfield – and 4x400 runners Ricardo Reynoso, Mykeal Cummings, and Mateo Herrera – competed on the Austin track during the prestigious Texas Relays in March. Springfield won that 110 race, too. He comes into the 300 hurdles event with the third best time; he’ll run about 8:15. In the 4x400, Springtown is one of four teams that are clumped at 3:22. That race is the last of the state meet, at 9:25.

Obama vs. the Reptilians: Texas Armageddon!

D

id you know Bob Hope was a reptile from outer space? Well, read on, pal! But first... Some people will believe anything. The latest in a long line of conspiracy theories concerns a federal military operation planned for Texas this summer, Jade Helm 15. Some folks, fueled by wacky Austin-based radio talk show host Alex Jones, are sure that the maneuvers are a plot to give the U.S. government a foothold in Texas – along with other

Southwestern states – to begin martial rule in America. And a few big-name Texans are chiming in with curious warnings. Like Ted Cruz (who looks suspiciously like Mr. Haney from Green Acres – but I digress). He believes the current presidential regime’s attitude toward our freedoms “produces distrust as to government.” Our new governor also has suggested something malicious might be going on; Greg Abbott has ordered the Texas National Guard to “monitor” the federal troops. You’d think Texas would be the last

place the feds would try to take over; we tote guns into Arby’s and church. The fear of big government is classic hysteria that finds even more footing in these social media days. A brash/controversial statement can zip around the country/world in about 15 minutes; whether it is true or false is not a concern. This Texas invasion is just the latest in a long line of conspiracies that circulate among “truth-seekers.” When I was 13, I was certain that Paul McCartney was dead. he close of the war was impressed on my mind by the death of Lincoln. “I can recall the pleasant day in early spring. We boys had been down to the creek, playing, and arrived at home about the time that Mr. Greenwood came from town bringing the news that Lincoln had been assassinated. Mr. Greenwood was Father's partner in the milk business, and had driven the milk wagon on that occasion. “Mother was crying as if her heart would break, and Mr. Greenwood was unhitching ‘Old Charley’ – the tears streaming down his furrowed cheeks. It was a sad day. We children looked upon Lincoln as next to the Almighty – and the thought of his being shot down in cold blood filled us with the deepest sorrow and was a great shock to all of us.

The feats we performed on horseback would seem rather difficult to the average country boy today, who depends on a rubber tired buggy or an automobile when he wants to go somewhere in a hurry. It was a favorite amusement for me to ride on a bareback horse, standing up,

the horse in full gallop. “About the only public amusement in those days was the circus, and it was no doubt due to the bare back riding we saw in the circus, that we followed it up by learning to do the trick, using old ‘Charley’ and ‘Dolly.’ “The little brook that ran through the farm was a favorite place to play. The log cabin stood on higher ground, near the center of the farm, quite a distance from the creek. Near the close of the war, Father built a stone house down on the bank of the creek, and when we moved into the new house, our joy was complete, for we were so handy to the swimming holes, the fishing, the plum thickets and grape vines, and the hundred other little joys that lurk around a ‘crick’ – for the ‘boy who knows.’ “There was skating in the winter; there were lurking places for rabbits and piles of driftwood in secluded

The sports that seemed the very best fun in the world, at that time, would doubtless appear rather dull to the children of the present time. “Football was unknown to us. Baseball was unheard of. Conferees struggle toward budget compromise

F

or the Texas Legislature to accomplish its main purpose, the passage of a state budget for fiscal years 2016 and 2017 must be achieved. The five House and five Senate members of the Conference Committee on the budget, House Bill 1, have been working together since late April. They must angle their philosophical pathways to something mutually acceptable to take back to their respective chambers for consideration. Last week, however, no results-showing HB 1 conference committee report was published, so as yet, there is no document revealing stalematebreaking agreements on the $211 billion budget. Movement on other items, in a bulk sense, has been slow. As of Friday, May 8, only four Senate bills and zero House bills had reached the governor’s desk. House and Senate members filed a total of 6,274

bills in the current session. This week, May 11 to 15, constitutionally imposed deadlines take effect, setting the stage for a massive die-off of bills that have not moved well into the process. So far, 1,315 House and Senate bills have progressed beyond the committees in which they originated. Comptroller pinpoints concerns With the June 1 end date for the legislative session only weeks away, Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar, the state’s chief bookkeeper and a former member of the House and the Senate, on May 4 sent a written reminder of his budgetary concerns to Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and House Speaker Joe Straus. While the focus of budget disagreements between the House and Senate is taxes and where to cut them, Hegar urged attention to a list of long-term balance sheet issues affecting

the state’s credit rating and thus the cost of borrowing. Here’s a shortened version of the list: 1 . STATE R o a d s CAPITAL and inHIGHLIGHTS frastructure. AdEd Sterling d i t i o n a l funds are needed to meet the state’s rapid population growth. 2. Texas Employees Retirement System pension. The state’s contribution rate is insufficient to amortize the liability in a timely manner. 3. Long-term debt. The state’s general obligation debt has more than doubled from $7 billion in 2010 to $15 billion currently. It must be paid down.

Letter to the Editor He’d prefer a freshtaurant to a fleshtaurant Dear Editor: I note with some dismay the trend Mark Campbell references in his recent column about Hooters [On Your Mark, May 6: “Breastraunts and chestranuts: God Bless America!”] – the “breastaurant” and now the

“chestaurant” movement where the proportions and clothing (or scarcity thereof) of the servers is a greater attraction than the food. This whole fleshtaurant movement is anything but appealing to someone who is only looking for a good burger or taco. Even those places where the waiter/waitress interrupts you every two minutes to ask how everything tastes seem like pestaurants.

I don't care how the staff looks (a dresstaurant), whether their aprons are starched (a pressedaurant) or even if they tell you jokes (a jestaurant). I just want the food to be freshtaurant, have a little zestaurant. That would be the bestaurant, and I would feel blestaurant to eat there. Somewhat sincerely, Bob Buckel Azle

Normal deterioration of stateowned facilities must be addressed because putting off maintenance costs more in the long run. Senate passes fracking bill A bill approved by the Senate on May 4 would limit municipalities’ power to ban the hydraulic fracturing of substrata in oil and gas exploration. Dubbed the “Denton fracking bill,” HB 40 by Sen. Troy Fraser, R-Horseshoe Bay, was filed in response to an ordinance passed by the city of Denton last fall. Fraser, who chairs the Senate Natural Resources and Economic Development Com-

mittee, said his bill “would clarify that the state is the ultimate authority when setting policies related to oil and gas exploration.” Fraser added that “cities would still exercise limited regulatory authority on above-ground oil and gas exploration activities, including things like fire and emergency response, noise and light pollution or traffic concerns.” Sales tax revenue goes up Comptroller Hegar on May 6 announced state sales tax revenue in April was $2.3 billion, up 1.1 percent compared to April 2014, and April 2015 was the 61st consecutive month of growth in state sales tax collections. April was “the second consecutive month of relatively slow growth” in sales tax revenue, Hegar said, and the 1.1 percent growth was “muted by the significant slowdown in the oil and gas mining sector.” However, he added, state sales tax collections from retail,

wholesale trade, restaurants, construction and manufacturing continue to grow. Cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts will receive May local sales tax allocations totaling $759.8 million, up 6.1 percent compared to May 2014, Hegar said. Drought conditions persist Gov. Abbott on May 8 renewed an emergency disaster proclamation certifying that exceptional drought conditions pose a threat of imminent disaster in some 81 specified counties in Texas. Abbott’s proclamation directs that requests to suspend any rule or regulation that may inhibit or prevent prompt response to the drought be submitted to his office for approval. Laugh Pursuit exhausting in female buddy film Hot Pursuit is one of those movies where you get what you pay for. However, it’s not to be confused for another movie of the same title – a trait that happens with regularity throughout film history. About the film The plot of Hot Pursuit is nothing new – another mismatched, female buddy movie. Even its title is not original. (At first, it was Don’t Mess with Texas – even though it was filmed in Louisiana.) There was a Hot Pursuit in 1987 starring John Cusack; he played a student trying to catch up with his girlfriend and her vacationing family and had a series of misadventures trying to find them in Mexico. Many other movies share titles. Of course, there are samenamed films when it comes to remaking subject matter like Hamlet and Frankenstein. But scores of movies share the same title while having nothing else in common. Before Twilight became an international hit with its glittery vampires in 2008, a same-name movie – with the new Hot Pursuit’s Reese Witherspoon in a key role – was released in 1998. It’s a star-studded detective film starring Paul Newman, Susan Sarandon, Gene Hackman, and James Garner. Still, it’s most famous for Witherspoon’s R-rated antics. Others with exact titles: • Gladiator – The 2000 version is beloved and won the Oscar for Best Picture. The 1992 movie stars Cuba Gooding, Jr. as an underground boxer. • The Aviator – This was the title of Martin Scorsese’s story of Howard Hughes in 2004 (Movie Man No. 593, a 7). Back in 1985, Christopher Reeve starred as a 1920’s mail pilot who “crashes on a mountain full of hungry wolves.” • The Avengers – Most famously, of course, is the superhero assemblage that broke box office records in 2012

(MM #981, 8). Back when the genre of big screen adaptations of TV shows was hot, the 1998 Avengers movie of the witty British spy show as a colossal mess (MM #247, 3). • The Fast and the Furious – For today’s audiences, the race car movie series around since 2001 is an international juggernaut. In 1955, a same-named movie’s plot concerned a conman on the run – and spawned zero sequels. Other movies with same titles include The Host, Independence Day, The Island, Joe, The Kid, Million Dollar Baby, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Project X, Ordinary People, Rush, Sahara, Speed, Broken Arrow, Braveheart, and Bad Boys. As for the 2015 Hot Pursuit, it’s likely to be as quickly forgotten as John Cusack’s version 27 years ago. The plot (spoilers) Rose Cooper (Witherspoon) tries to carry on her father’s tradition of being a respected police officer. But she’s hidden down in the evidence room, sent there after she accidently lit the mayor’s son on fire. Because of regulations, Witherspoon gets sent to escort Daniella (Sofia Vergara from TV’s Modern Family) to Dallas where she and her husband will

testify against a mob boss. But two sets of hitmen show up, and Witherspoon and Vergara must flee. Dirty cops are after them as well as the mob boss’ assassins. Every time the ladies wriggle away from one evil duo, the other pops up. They also encounter citizens and parolees in their flight. Vergara isn’t as dumb as she plays and Witherspoon isn’t the shrimp she appears to be. Both have agendas and, together, manage to find justice. What works Witherspoon plays it wacky. She’s all-in in the role (too much for some critics and moviegoers; Hot Pursuit is getting

Coming and going Our state butterfly, the Monarch, travels through here twice annually – and they can stop for you BY MARK K. CAMPBELL Prepare now and you might have hundreds – even thousands – of visitors come October. That’s when the annual migration of Monarch butterflies once again passes right through this area.

In the past 20 years, there has Getting busy now by creating a “Monarch Waystation” been a shocking decline of 90 means you could witness a fall percent in the butterfly’s population. wonder. Carol Welch, a Parker County Master Gardener, said the The migration Waystations are vital to the Monarch is being considered continued migration of Mon- for the endangered species list. It takes four generations, but, archs. every year, millions of Monarchs make their way to a site west of Mexico City in August and September. The first three generations live only six to eight weeks en route to Mexico. Once there, a fourth generation female can lay a thousand eggs – but only on specific milkweed plants. Since those plants are considered nuisances, Monarchs are dying out. Some tagged butterflies have turned in remarkable flying performances; routes take them through the central part of Texas and a second pathway runs along the coast. One Monarch was monitored to fly 275 miles in a single day. Another flew 365 miles nonstop over water. Monarchs have been seen at 11,000 feet by airplane pilots.

Habitat woes The destruction of habitat has caused the great decline in Monarchs. The population peaked at 30 billion in 1996-97. Welch said a new crop dusting chemical sprayed on soybeans killed milkweed but increased bean production – This migrating Monarch enjoys filling up on a zinnia in “good for us, bad for the Mona Texas garden. The magical plant to butterflies of all sorts is this blue mistflower. Planting it in a “backyard waystation” will draw many varieties. Photo courtesy Parker County Master Gardeners cline in 2000-01. After an uptick in 2003-2004, the federal ethanol mandate for fuel caused another dip in the butterfly population. “There’s a huge decline now,” Welch said. “Less than 10 percent are left.” Monarchs lay eggs only on milkweed plants – and then on just specific varieties. The foul-tasting milkweed transfers to the Monarch caterpillar, making the bug unattractive to predators. “It makes them toxic,” Welch said. There are two types of milkweed where Monarch life begins. One is the brilliant “butterfly weed” that can enliven any garden, Welch said. She did not recommend the other variety, “antelope horns,” be grown due to its invasiveness.

zone – that’s us – can plant vegetation that will help the Monarch along the way in its migrations. Aside from milkweed, suggest varieties to plant to entice the butterflies in the fall include lantana, Mexican petunia, cosmos, zinnias, and the catnip of all plants to Monarchs and other butterflies, the blue mistflower. Suggested plantings for spring Monarch visits are calylophus, blackfoot daisy, salvia Greggii, verbena, Mexican plum, and Texas redbud. All these plants issue nectarrich flowers that sustain our state butterfly as it travels. With such a “backyard waystation,” you can expect butterflies to descend by the hundreds – or even more. The recommended necessities for a backyard waystation include: • An area of at least 100 Saving the Monarch square feet Texans in the Central Fly• Six hours of direct sun

SATURDAY, MAY 16

• A variety of nectar flowers • Native milkweed • Annual maintenance A waystation can be certified officially at www.monarchwatch.org/waystation. Local help Welch said plenty of Parker County waystations have been created, including one at Azle’s Central Park. When told Springtown lacked a waystation, plans were considered to remedy that, perhaps at Optimist Park near the Square. So, whether you’re creating a backyard waystation or a “demonstration garden” like those in Azle, Weatherford, and Aledo, proper preparation will not only provide beauty in the spring and fall, but you might just help keep the Monarch off the endangered species list. And what a sight you’ll see every spring and fall.

The top Metroplex suburbs are...Azle and Springtown? So reports one website BY NATALIE GENTRY According to movoto.com, an online real estate brokerage, both Springtown and Azle rank in the top 10 most desirable Fort Worth suburbs in several categories. To create the lists, the crew at Movoto gathered criteria specific to each subject and scored 28 Fort Worth suburbs according to the parameters.

Criteria used in this category included, the number of unmarried residents, the population gap between males and females (the smaller the better), amenities per capita, and cost of living. According to the site, some categories were weighted because they are more important to singles than others. For example, the unmarried residents’ category was weighted so heartily that it made up 40 percent of the overall score, Looking for love? Interestingly, Springtown and the population gap was came in at number 1 on the top made up 30 percent. Springtown is reported to 10 best suburbs for singles and have the most singles-attractive Azle came in at No. 7.

Sales tax numbers ebb and flow Some local towns are doing just fine while others lag based on the monthly sales tax report issued by state Comptroller Glenn Hegar. The final April number statewide – $2.3 billion – is up 1.1 percent from last April. Texas continued its streak of consecutive growth; it’s now 61. Almost everyone locally received higher checks than in 2015. In 2014, Azle’s April take was $203,926 while this year’s check was $211,437 – an increase of 3.68 percent. So far this year, Azle has collected $924,869 which is up 5.09 percent from the $880,044 of 2014. Springtown made a substantial jump over its 2014 take. This April, the town received $104,855 compared to last year’s $87,969 – that’s a leap of 19.19 percent. Springtown’s yearly totals are impressive, too. This time in 2014, the town had tallied $353,812 but it’s already at $431,211 this year – a whopping 21.87 increase. Other towns and entities enjoyed steps up, too.

Reno is far ahead of last year’s numbers. In 2014, the April check was $7,964; compared to this year’s $9,914, Reno received 24.48 percent more. The year is strong for Reno, too. The town is 39.57 percent ahead of 2014 at $44,362, up from $31.784. Sanctuary is seeing hefty tax increases as well. The town jumped up 24.48 percent from last April – $1,428 from $1,156. Comparing the yearly totals, Sanctuary had collected $7,011 which is 33.17 percent above 2014’s $5,265. Both the Azle Crime Control District and the Municipal Development District enjoyed increases. The Crime District was up 7.34 percent while the Development District rose 16.11 percent. Two towns saw sales tax drops. Lakeside is down 2.59 percent from last April and 22.72 percent from 2014. Pelican Bay dropped 18.15 percent from April 2014. Comparing 2014 and ‘15, the tally is down 9.27 percent.

amenities (restaurants and arts/ entertainment listings) on the list. “Singles in Springtown will have their pick of awesome date nights with the most singles amenities per capita,” the site reads. “Grab a gourmet burger and split a shake at B&B Burgers or grab dinner and drinks at Woody Creek Bar-B-Q.” All in a day’s work? Young professionals looking for a Fort Worth suburb to call home could consider Azle during their house search. The home of the Hornets

placed No. 10 on the list of best suburbs for young professionals. Springtown didn’t make the top 10 in this list, coming in at number 26. According to the site, the unemployment rate, percentage of residents between 22-29 years old, percentage holding a bachelor’s degree, those who work in management or other professional fields, and the cost of living were factors used to create the list. “Azle rounds out our list with plenty of green space for outdoor recreation enthusiasts, and

Finally, the list for top 10 most affordable Fort Worth suburbs place Springtown at No. 2 and Azle at No. 6. The history of Memorial Day

Though many people are quick to refer to Memorial Day as the unofficial beginning of summer, the day is much more than that. Initially known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a day to remember those military members who died in service of the country. The origins of Memorial Day remain a topic of debate. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, N.Y. as the official birthplace of Memorial Day. However, the roots of Memorial Day likely run much deeper, as researchers at Duke University note that during the Civil War, organized women’s groups in the south had begun to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers. Memorial Day as we know it today can likely be traced to Charleston, S.C., where teachers, missionaries and some members of the press gathered on May 1, 1865 to honor fallen soldiers. During the Civil War, captured Union soldiers were held at the Charleston Race Course and hundreds died during captivity. Upon their deaths, soldiers were buried in unmarked graves. When the Civil War ended, the May Day gathering was organized as a memorial to all the men who had died during captivity. The burial ground was landscaped, and those freed as a result of the Civil War played an integral role in the event at the Charleston Race Course. While the event in Charleston might have been the first Memorial Day-type celebration in the southern United States, General John A. Logan is often cited as inspiring similar events in the north. As commanderin-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, a veterans’ organization for men who served in the Civil War, General Logan issued a proclamation just five days after the Charleston event that called for Decoration Day to be observed annually across the country. Logan preferred the event not be held on the anniversary of any particular battle, and thus the day was observed for the first time on May 30. Celebrating the day in May also was significant to event organizers because May is a month when flowers are in bloom, making it easier for observers of the holiday to place flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers. In 1868, events were held at more than 180 cemeteries in 27 states, and those figures nearly doubled in 1869. By 1890, every northern state officially recognized Decoration Day as a state holiday. But southern states honored their dead on a different day until after World War I, when the holiday was changed to recognize Americans who died in any war and not just the Civil War. Nearly every state now celebrates Memorial Day, a name for the holiday first used in 1882, on the last Monday in May.
