By CHRIS AGEE Azle police continue investigating an Aug. 17 crash that left a pedestrian dead. APD hopes someone in the community can help them identify the driver responsible. The incident happened around 2:30 a.m. in the 1200 block of State Highway 199 and officers arrived to find Donald Buerger Jr. in the westbound lane of travel. A witness told authorities a white male struck Buerger before driving away from the scene. During the subsequent investigation, police have received additional leads regarding the driver and vehicle and are soliciting further tips from the community. Investigators are looking for a light-colored Ford truck with possible damage to its right front headlamp assembly. Anyone with additional information can contact Det. Sgt. K.D. Rogers by calling (817) 444-3221 or sending an email to krogers@ci.azle.tx.us.
Azle ISD offering bond info online By MARK K. CAMPBELL If you’re curious about exactly what the upcoming school bond election is for, the Azle ISD web site has a trio of documents that goes in-depth on the items. At www.azleisd.net, the top tab under “News” on the home page is “2013 Azle Bond Election Information.” From there, surfers will discover a quick summary, a video, and two places to download details about the Nov. 5 election. The called bond is for $20 million and covers three areas: · a career and technology center · a performance/competition gymnasium · a fire suppression system in AHS Based on the average cost of a home in Azle – $135,166 – the cost for requested improvements is $2.11 monthly. Taxpayers 65 and over who have received an Over 65 Homestead Exemption would pay no new school taxes. Even with the increase, Azle ISD would remain the lowest taxed school district in the area. On the web site, a bond presentation – given by superintendent Dr. Ray Lea – is a reproduction of the information he has delivered to others. Also available for download is a bond brochure that details much of the same information. The Career and Tech Center is projected to cost PLEASE SEE AZLE PAGE 2A.

Announcement comes: Going up! With a few exceptions, most area cities see healthy rise in sales tax revenues Texas Comptroller Susan Combs announced early in August that state sales tax revenue in July was $2.2 billion, up 7.3 percent compared to July 2012. “Texas sales tax revenue has increased for 40 consecutive months,” Combs said. “The retail trade sector bolstered the latest growth in monthly revenue, and collections from the construction and the oil and natural gas sectors continued to show strength.” Combs will send cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts their August local sales tax allocations totaling $671 million, up 6.2 percent compared to August 2012. The sales tax figures represent monthly sales made in June as well as April, May and June sales by businesses that report tax quarterly.
$1,429,488 are up 2.73 percent from the same time period in 2012, when collections totaled $1,391,432. Similarly, Azle’s Crime Control and Prevention District collected $36,968 for August, up 6.73 percent from $34,637 in August 2012. The district is up 3.83 percent in its year-to-date collections compared with 2012, with $266,230 in the coffers through August. It had collected $256,387 during the fist eight months of 2012. Springtown collected 5.61 percent more than its August 2012 allocation of $75,911, bringing in $80,177 this August. Total collections for the year so far are at $599,259 – up 1.16 percent from $592,259 as of August 2012. PLEASE SEE MOST, PAGE 2A.
Azle PD bids farewell to Blaisdell Fellow officers, city staff, and friends joined at city hall recently to mark the retirement of Azle Police Lt. Lee Blaisdell. A 28-year veteran of law enforcement, Blaisdell spent 23 of those years with the Azle Police Department. “I’ll always consider the city of Azle my home,” he said. “I’ve made a lot of friendships and bonds...in the community.” Nominated by Azle Police Chief Randy Reed, Blaisdell received a 2012 Law Enforcement Achievement Award in June from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education. The 46-year-old officer is planning to transition into a new position as an investigator for the Tarrant County District Attorney’s office.

Most Parker County cities saw healthy increases for August, with the exception being Reno. That city’s 2.19 percent decrease for August, from $6,946 in August 2012 to $6,794, didn’t impact its year-to-date percentage negatively, though. For the first eight months of 2013, Reno has collected $54,704, 8.05 percent more than its collections of $50,626 for the same time period in 2012. The city of Azle has seen steady, if small, increases around 2 percent almost every month for the past couple of years. In August, however, the city’s sales tax allocation of $206,515 was 6.90 percent higher than the $193,176 it collected a year ago. Year-to-date totals through August are
