The Sting Fling Festival is new and improved For years, Azle’s biggest gathering has brought thousands of folks to town. The 2015 Sting Fling Festival, heading into year eight, will look nothing like any predecessors. The popular parade remains, but it has a new route. Vendors will now be lined up in the middle of Main Street. And scads more – over 100 – can be found inside 404 Main Street – along with a photo booth, a fl ight simulator, and a face painting area. The popular Color Fling 5K takes off at Central Park at 7:45 a.m. New this year is Talley Amusements who will set up a carnival that will thrill all ages on Friday and Saturday.

Another Sting Fling Festival fi rst is a sanctioned Steak Cookoff Association event at 10 a.m. The festival will conclude with music in the Central Park amphitheater Saturday from 7-9 p.m. But don’t miss popular returning events: the classic car show at Azle Elementary, the petting zoo, and the entertaining “I’ve Got Talent” competition. And, of course, it wouldn’t be a Sting Fling Festival without the crazy Weiner Dog Derby in the park. So, use the map inside this special section and negotiate around this year’s fun. You’ll agree that there’s nothing around like the Sting Fling Festival!www

Midwest Waste Services: committed to community BY MISTY SHAW If you’re in need of waste recovery service at a fair price, look no further than Midwest Waste Services of Azle. The company offers residential, commercial, and industrial waste collection to customers ranging all the way from Wichita Falls to Weatherford to Denton, as well as Lake Worth, Springtown, and Azle. In the summer of 2011, the company’s four co-owners – Kent Durham, Jeff Watts, Jay Zook, and Beth Sweet – launched Midwest Waste Services with 100 customers on their first pick-up day. They now provide services to approximately 6,500 customers. Durham says he and his business partners were no strangers to the industry when they set out to start their own company. “We knew each other before we started,” having all worked together at IESI, Durham said. “We could see some opportunity there to do things better. “Our customer service is a lot better, both in terms of when you call in to get issues addressed, and at the curb – I think we just do a better job.” Durham also said Midwest department in our area,” Durham involved in the community, and avoids the hidden fees and sur- said. we think that’s important,” Durcharges that other companies of“If you don’t have good por- ham said. ten impose on their customers. table waste service then you have For more information, call “Our pricing is much more more potential for people burning Midwest at 817-528-7212 or visit straightforward,” he said. “We trash and starting fi res, so we help www.midwest-waste.com. have a rate that’s the same every them out by providing month, we factor our costs into it, that free service to the and we’re still able to be competi- fi re departments and also tive. making it affordable to “With us, you pay what you have service out here” in pay, and that’s what you pay.” rural areas, he added. Geren: a longtime Sting Fling sponsor by carla noah stutsman Wholesome. Fun. Great community spirit. And a pretty good football team. That’s what comes to Charlie Geren’s mind when people ask him about Azle. And it’s what makes him so glad to be a sponsor of Sting Fling – something he’s proudly done for more than a decade. “I’ve been a sponsor since 2000, and I’ve been happy to do it every year,” Geren said. “Sting Fling is a great thing for the Azle community – it brings a lot of people together and they have a lot of wholesome fun – it’s a great family event. “That’s the thing about Azle – everybody’s behind the community, everybody’s behind the schools,” Geren continued. “It’s like Music in the Park, another example of the great community spirit in Azle.” Geren says he was “very impressed” with what he saw Friday, Aug. 25, when he toured Azle High School with ISD officials. “What they’ve done is amazing – what they’ve been able to do with the limited amount of money they had available,” Geren said. “The Career and Technology Center will really make a difference for students, and that gym is really going to be something!” Representing Texas House District 99, which is generally the northwest quadrant of Tarrant County including the portions of Azle in that county, Geren was first elected State Representative in November 2000. It’s not a job he plans to retire from anytime soon.

s tate r epresentative c harlie Geren

84th legislative session and authorized by SJR 5, will appear on the November 2015 statewide ballot. The amendment would authorize a new, stable source of funding for transportation in Texas, dedicated to the construction and maintenance of roads. Upon passage, Prop 7 would dedicate a portion of the general sales and use tax and the motor vehicle sales tax to the general highway fund. It would not raise taxes. The amendment would provide a significant step toward meeting the unmet funding needs for transportation projects in Texas. Geren said he’s patiently awaiting a return call from the Geren on 199, quakes, cops “First of all, I can’t even think Texas Railroad Commission about retiring until we get those (TRC) after learning the agency bridges built on Highway 199,” Geren said. “Right now, they are scheduled for next year, with construction starting in 2017.” But if Proposition 7 (Prop 7) passes in the November election, Geren thinks work could actually begin on the SH 199 project between Wells Burnett Road and Confederate Park Road sometime in 2016. Prop 7, a constitutional amend- 817-455-8983 ment drafted by legislators in the 817-270-2736

has issued a preliminary ruling that an XTO injection well north of Azle is not to blame for a spate of earthquakes in the area in 2013-14. “I’ve got a call in to them because I don’t understand it. Before those wells were there, we didn’t have earthquakes, but now we do – I want a better explanation,” Geren said. “If that’s not what’s causing them (quakes), we need to get busy finding out what is.” He said he hopes to hear from the TRC no later than next week and offered to share what he learns with the Azle News as well as Azle Mayor Alan Brundrett. Geren – a former lawman himself – made no bones about expressing his deep convictions on the recent assault on law en-

forcement officers. “It’s horrible, and I don’t understand it at all. All lives matter, and to say that only black lives matter is racist in itself,” Geren said. “We need to stand together, and we need to stand behind all first responders. We’ve got to catch these people who are executing officers, put them in the state penitentiary and then execute them. “There’s just no reason why these brave men and women should have to go out every day

and be fearful for their lives when they’re doing something as innocent as pumping gas,” Geren continued. “‘Pig in a blanket’ – that’s a reference to cops in body bags. We don’t need that in our community. We don’t need that anywhere.” Texas House Reps serve twoyear terms, and Geren is already looking ahead to a Republican primary in March 2016, where he faces a challenge from former hedge-fund manager Bo French.

Helping to build the Azle of the future BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN When choosing a bank, people typically look at things like interest rates, location, customer service, and security of funds. Pinnacle Bank Azle can meet or beat just about any bank when it comes to the business of banking. But it’s not just about business. If you run in Central Park, work out at the gym, go to the grocery store, attend school or church functions or any number of community activities around Azle, you’ve likely run into a Pinnacle Bank employee or bank officer there. That’s because almost all of them live in the Azle area and care about everything that goes on here – and that’s especially true when it comes to Azle’s children. Regina Stokes, vice president of HR/training at the bank, spoke about Pinnacle’s national public relations campaign, Why Community Matters. “Every time I see that slogan, I think about our children,” Stokes said. “The children of Azle are the future of our community – they are the ones who will continue the legacy when we’re gone.” Stokes and her co-workers put their money where their mouths are, so to speak, by volunteering on their own time for various organizations around Azle. In just about every instance, there’s a benefit to children. Randa Goode, assistant vice president lending offi cer, is spearheading the 2nd annual “I’ve Got Talent” competition during Sting Fling again this year. Goode also speaks to students about the importance of fi nances through the Communities in School Program and is active with the Azle High School Drama Boosters and the Azle High School Swim Team Boosters. Kristie Reger, assistant vice president lending offi cer and board member of the Azle hospital, helps the youth of the community through Pinnacle Bank’s Wool Fund – a program open to every school in the district year-round and funded by employee donations. “The Wool Fund provides everything from clothing to coats, shoes, and even personal hygiene items to children in need identifi ed by school personnel,” Reger said. Natasha Hensley, cash man-

Nate Simmons, VP lending offi cer, moved to Azle with his wife and two young sons. Simmons, too, is not just busy

with his customers – he plays an important role as a member of the Azle Ministerial Alliance in putting on Follow The Flag, a huge annual event in Central Park each Fourth of July. “It’s a community-wide event funded entirely by donations of money and time,” Simmons said of the Christian patriotic event. “I think the overall community sense of Follow The Flag is very posi-

tive, and it’s free for everyone.” Simmons credits Kristie Tatsch, assistant vice president lending offi cer, as another major volunteer contributor to the event. Simmons also serves on Azle High School’s Career and Technology Education Advisory Committee. The committee, made up of local business men and women, reaches out to the next generation by mentoring students and giving them a real-life glimpse into various careers and trades. Goode described the attitude of her fellow Pinnacle Bank employees: “We all want to make a positive impact on this community – it’s where we live, too.” Stokes agreed, adding that she often fi nds opportunities in her daily life to talk to young people – sometimes about banking; sometimes about a career choice; sometimes about nothing important at all. “The point is to engage them and to let them know people in

the community care about them and want them to grow and flourish,” Stokes said. Simmons said that, toward the end of each year, an email arrives from the Dinsdale family, founders and owners of Pinnacle Bank, asking each branch to assess its contributions to the

community. “Have we done enough?” the Dinsdales want to know. Simmons said, “Here at Pinnacle Bank Azle, we give fi nancially – but we recognize that often, showing up and giving of our time and effort outweighs the dollars.”

Smile great with Azle Dental Care Dr. Brooke Porter and the entire staff at Azle Dental Care are determined to give their patients the best service in the Metroplex. They redesigned their patient recall system with the use of email and texting. The new system reminds patients of cleanings and dental appointments by sending an email or a text. If patients would rather receive reminders by phone, the recall message has a button to simply option out of the service. “We love all of our patients and we want an easy way to stay in touch with them,” said Dr. Porter. Azle has grown a lot since Dr. Brooke Porter started her practice in 1998. As new people continue to move in, Azle Dental Care has adjusted to the growth. Eight years ago they moved from their long-time offi ce at Park Place Center to a more spacious building at 912 Boyd Road. Azle Dental Care’s website, Smilegreat.com gives patients information on dental procedures that are performed in the

offi ce as well as staff introductions and patient forms. The site is also linked to Azle Dental Care’s Twitter and Facebook pages. These online social networking sites have improved the doctor/patient relationship by allowing for daily interaction and giving everyone a forum for some conversations about d e n tal and general healthcare. Azle Dental Care has sponsored its own contests on Facebook with giveaways like tickets to a Texas Rangers baseball games and Six Flags Over Texas. Facebook is giving the staff and patients at Azle Dental Care “way too much fun,” said Dr. Porter. “If you visit our page, please be sure to like us!” Smilegreat.com is also a good place to go for anyone who wants to know what’s happening in other parts of town because Azle Dental Care has dedicated an entire page to the city – future Azleites can fi nd information on the Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Azle, local government and politics, Eagle Mountain Lake, and Azle schools.

Ace is the place here in Azle Brian and Nancy Rogers own Ace of Azle and, once they got here, they didn’t take long to get involved in the community. While Nancy runs the store, Brian represents them as a member of the Rotary Club; he’s also an Optimist and an Ambassador for the Chamber of Commerce. The couple also contributes to the community in several other ways, too, either through Music in the Park or local charity shindigs. That’s refl ective of the service they strive to provide each customer when they stop by Ace of Azle at 505 Stewart Street. When the Rogerses arrived in town in 2011 from Eastland and settled in, they were surprised at how friendly folks were.

“I made more friends here in Azle than I ever made in Eastland in 19 years,” Brian said. “We love it,” he added. “A benefi t to me is that I’m involved in the community which I never had the opportunity to be in Eastland.” Ace of Azle was born when Brian got tired of driving back and forth to Fort Worth when he was remodeling his house. “I thought, this is crazy,” he said. What can I do to improve this?” He said he called True Value and Ace: “True Value never called me back; Ace called back the very next day. “Within 150 days, we had a store open.” Nancy and Brian staff their store with local folks who know what other local folks need and want.

Talent show back

Last year’s “I’ve Got Talent” winners pose with their awards. For the 2015 Sting Fling, the competition ramps back up at noon Saturday on the stage at 404 Main Street.

One of the most popular events at the Sting Fling – and that’s saying something considering there is so much to do – is the local talent show, “I’ve Got Talent.” The contest is not limited to any age group; awards are given for the top three places in specific age groups in three places. Then there’s the coveted “People’s Choice Award.” The overall winner receives a cash prize. Before the finals on Saturday at noon at the 404 Main Street Stage, performers went through a live audition process the night before. The event benefits the Azle High School Drama Department and the Azle Chamber of Commerce.

Where everybody knows your name Anytime Fitness is not your average gym BY MISTY SHAW It’s only been a month since Anytime Fitness opened in Azle, but the state-of-the-art, 24-hour facility is already off to a great start. “It’s been really awesome,” said Jake Pitt, co-owner and operator of Anytime Fitness. “We’ve been very welcomed by the community and we’re really doing well.” Anytime Fitness is a facility that never sleeps; members have the opportunity to work out around the clock. “Our main thing is convenience,” Pitt said. “Members have full access 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and we never close.” As Azle’s newest gym, Anytime Fitness has a lot to offer, including a virtual training room, Zumba classes, a personal trainer, the “Silver Sneakers” program for senior citizens, and, of course, a fully equipped weight room. “We have the most state-ofthe-art gym in Azle – we offer full access to cable and Inter-

net right there on your cardio machine,” Pitt said. “We have a huge functional training area.” Member satisfaction is a top priority at Anytime Fitness, Pitt said, and the gym’s employees are committed to making sure its members are well taken care of. “Our customer service is above and beyond,” said Pitt. “We differentiate ourselves by being not your average gym. Everyone we employ is there specifically to help the members.” Anytime Fitness is a family owned franchise which Pitt and his parents operate along with managing partner Trey Logan. The owners strive to make Anytime Fitness a welcoming place and a partner in the Azle community. “We want to help build the community in Azle, that has been our main focus since we opened here,” Pitt said. “We’re trying to be really involved and in touch with the community. “We know everyone’s name and we want everyone to know our names – it’s a surprisingly personable environment.”
