The Azle Independent School District Board of Trustees, plus Superintendent Dr. Ray Lea, answered the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Thursday, Sept. 4, at the Azle Junior High stadium. Lea had previously taken the plunge at home after a challenge from his brother-in-law, but when one was issued by board Secretary Shannon Hart and President Bill Lane, Lea extended the challenge to include the entire board. In turn, the AISD board members solicited Azle Mayor Alan Brundrett, the Azle City Council and City Manager, Craig Lemin, and Texas gubernatorial candidates Wendy Davis and Greg Abbott. Man jailed for trying to take officer’s gun by carla noah stutsman An Azle man who repeatedly called 9-1-1 for help, then fought with an Azle police officer and attempted to take his weapon is now in jail. James Roland Grigg, 42, of Azle, was arrested Sept. 2 in the 600 block of Alameda Road and charged with assault on a public servant, a thirddegree felony, as well as with attempting to take a weapon from an officer, a state jail felony. Grigg was transferred to the Tarrant County jail, where he remained Sept.

9 in lieu of $100,000 bond. A judge set bond at $40,000 for the assault charge and at $60,000 for attempting to take the officer’s weapon. According to police, Grigg – who has a history of assault and is known by Azle officers from prior incidents – placed multiple 9-1-1 calls, saying he was having difficulty breathing. When emergency medical responders arrived, they requested police. When Azle Officer Jonathan Cramer got on scene, Grigg said he didn’t need any help and ordered Cramer off

his property. Then, Grigg came toward Cramer in an aggressive manner, with clenched fists. Cramer could smell alcohol on Grigg, so when he turned to walk away, Cramer reached for Grigg’s wrist. That’s when Grigg pulled away and struck Cramer on the left side of his face. Cramer tried to restrain Grigg, but a struggle ensued during which Grigg unsecured Cramer’s holster and gained

Tree-trimming will begin at Scotland Avenue at SH 199. Working only on the southwest side of the highway, they’ll move northwest into the downtown Azle area before heading north on FM 730 North. Neighborhoods on both sides of FM 730 North will be trimmed as far north as Walnut Creek Drive on the west and Stribling Drive on the east. An Azle man who took a proactive approach to protecting his property helped police in locating his stolen motorcycle – and the two people who stole it. Joseph William Cordell, 17, of Azle, was charged with theft of stolen property $1,500-20,000 related to the theft. He held was in the Tarrant County jail as of Sept. 9 in lieu of $15,000 bond. A juvenile male was also charged in the crime and transported to the Tarrant County Juvenile Detention Center. The motorcycle owner, who lives inside the city limits of Azle, discovered his motorcycle missing on the morning of Sept. 2. According to a report filed by Pelican Bay police, the man then used his home computer to track the motorcycle via the SPOT GPS locator he had earlier installed on the bike. The man told PBPD Deputy Chief Stephen Combs, Sr. that the tracking device indicated his stolen motorcycle was inside a structure in the

1500 block of Sheri Lane South in the Bay. Three Tarrant County Sheriff’s deputies, who had previously been contacted by the motorcycle owner, were at the Sheri Lane South residence when Combs arrived, and noted motorcycle tire tracks leading into the yard and toward the front door of the residence. Police also found the license plate belonging to the vehicle in the front yard of the residence. According to the report, Combs knocked on the door but no one answered. When he looked through a window, Combs observed two white males lying in the living room and a large object in the kitchen covered by a blanket. A motorcycle tire was visible under the blanket. Repeated attempts to wake the two males were unsuccessful; but when the owner of the residence arrived, she authorized officers to enter. They did, recovering the stolen motorcycle with very little damage, and arresting both Cordell and the juvenile male for the crime.

Silver Creek UMC celebrates its 50th annual Lord’s Acre

Scholarships

Two Azle High School students were awarded scholarships by WFAA-TV’s Dale Hansen at his annual football “Classic” in Waxahachie Sept. 5. AHS winners of $1,000 each, here with the sportscaster, were Lydia Bazan (left) and Blake Hall.

NEWS DIGEST Parade meeting slated Sept. 30 With Azle’s Homecoming game set for Friday, Oct. 17, at Hornet Field against Chisholm Trail High School, plans are underway for the annual Homecoming Parade. Always a community favorite, the parade will begin at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13. A mandatory meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30 in the AHS auditorium. Each group or organization participating in the parade must have an adult representative at this meeting. Entry packets will be available at AHS and the Azle ISD administration building beginning Monday, Sept 15.

Clarification The photograph that ran with last week’s story about an Azle man receiving 25 years for videotaping a sexual assault was not the culprit. The News received that photo from the Parker County Sheriff’s Department with the identifying moniker.

PCSD said the error occurred while they were revamping their computer system. Also: A name in the Page 13A cross country results was spelled incorrectly. The boy’s name is Jacob Lawton. The News apologizes for the confusion.

by carla noah stutsman Silver Creek United Methodist Church will celebrate its 50th Annual Lord’s Acre Festival Sept. 20 beginning at 9 a.m., and the public is invited to celebrate, as well. The morning will kick off with a silent auction, a craft and bake sale and children’s activities, including a bounce house. Those events run from 9 a.m.12:30 p.m. A car show runs from 9-11 a.m. From 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., a barbecue lunch will be served. Featuring brisket, chicken, pulled pork or sausage, lunch will also come with potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans, a drink and dessert. Meal tickets are just $10 for adults and $5 for kids age 12 and under. At 12:30 p.m., the live auction begins, featuring gift baskets, vacations, and other items. Following the live auction, winners of raffles for a quilt and shotgun will be drawn to cap off the events. According to lifelong member of the church and this year’s Lord’s Acre Festival chair, Dena Hall, the event was developed in the southeastern United States as a means of raising funds in small congregations with limited financial resources. A portion or “acre” of a church member’s land was set aside to raise crops to be sold to benefit the church. Those without land could set aside a portion of their needlework, craft items, or any other salable talent they possessed. The Lord’s Acre Festival is a sale of those donations, and money raised from the Lord’s Acre Festival goes toward the upkeep of the church’s grounds and buildings. Hall’s husband, Clint, has

been a member of the church since 1988, when he and Dena married. He said Jim Tucker was instrumental in getting the first Lord’s Acre Festival started at Silver Creek UMC back in 1964. In those days, area dairymen – like Dena’s father, longtime Parker County Commissioner and local dairy man Waymon Wright, his father, Claud, and brothers, Norvin, Harold Ray, and Den – as well as Larry Cotton, Jim Tucker and other farmers would bring calves, horses and chickens to sell at the live auction. “We don’t see that much anymore, but other items for sale are still very similar,” Clint Hall said. “We still see handcrafted items and woodwork – things like cabinets, wroughtiron items and handmade wind chimes. There is also a country store with jams and jellies and homemade pies and cakes.” Those pies and cakes have

raised a lot of money over the years. Clint remembered bidding wars between bankers Charles Blasingame and Scott Allred, who would drive the bids up higher and higher. “I’ve seen a homemade cake sell for $1,200,” Clint said. “It was the same with Joe Rider (of Joe Rider Butane) and Jim Dalton (owner of Rural Gas Supply) – I’d love to see that happen again.” Quilts, handmade by women in the church, have brought that much and more at the Lord’s Acre. This year, a quilt purchased at an earlier Lord’s Acre has been donated back to the event and will be raffled off. The quilt even includes names of some church members from the era in which it was originally created. Hall said that over the years, the proceeds from the church’s Lord’s Acre Festival have accomplished many projects, but

he is most proud of one in particular. “One year, the money we made went to restore the original church building built in 1900,” Hall said. “It was leaning, just about ready to fall over, and we shored it all up and put in all new windows and doors.” Now, the historic building is used for weddings, christenings, and various other events, he said. Land for the church was donated early in the year of 1900 by Joseph Steele, Jr. and Thomas Clayton, who each donated one acre from their adjoining farms for the church to be built. That original building was used for regular worship services until 1967, when a newer and larger sanctuary was built. Founding families of Silver Creek United Methodist Church included the Wright, Clayton, Steele, Gilley, Tucker, and Newsom families, among others.

One of many projects funded by Silver Creek United Methodist Church’s annual Lord’s Acre Festival was the restoration of its original church building, circa 1900. The church will host its 50th Annual Lord’s Acre Festival Saturday, Sept. 20. Photo by Carla Noah Stutsman

ALS Challenge

Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Azle President Bob Ellzey and HR Officer Lance Waring accepted the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge but added a twist – with heart. Although each made a monetary donation to the ALS Association, the pair also raised money for the American Heart Association’s Heartwalk by asking Texas Health Azle employees to donate to Ellzey’s “Bob’s Better Hearts Club Band” or Waring’s “THAZ Heart Walkers” teams for the chance to watch them take the challenge. Ellzey, Waring, and the Texas Health Azle Auxiliary will each match the total of all donations. The AHA Heartwalk will be held Sept. 13 in the Fort Worth Stockyards. neighbors can gather. A grill is a plus, since host sites are asked to cook up hot dogs donated by the department. Drinks and chips are also provided by APD. Host sites are encouraged to invite neighbors not only to attend, but to bring a signature food item such as an appetizer, side dish, or dessert. Across Azle, families are asked to turn on their home’s outside lights, lock up, and gather at the host site in their neighborhood. There, they can enjoy some simple food and get to know their neighbors and police officers. Azle police will commute between host sites where they will be available to meet citizens, answer questions, and assist in any way possible. And eat. Yes, police officers do eat.

We never know what we will get, but we know that what we get does help the members who are on fixed incomes. Volunteers go downtown to the Tarrant Food Bank and work; others pick up the food and bring it to the center while others yet prepared it for distribution.

It’s all about volunteers donating their time and energy to help others live better. There will be a fundraising patio sale Friday, Sept. 19. Your leftover garage sale items and other donated items may be brought to the center a day or two before the sale and Diane Dycus, who is donating her time and energy, will supervise the pricing and sale. This will be a great place to pick up something you’d like to have for a reasonable price. September is National SelfImprovement Month, and a good place to start is at the Azle Senior Center, where you can join an exercise class and meet with others for fellowship. Maintaining the ability to move and get around helps one to enjoy living and sharing life with others. The Center’s director, Darlene Holmes, is still under the weather and would appreciate your thoughts and prayers. She plans to return to work as soon as she is able to regain her health.

Since 1984, police departments across the nation have observed National Night Out in an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and to send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. The event, created and sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), culminates annually, on the first Tuesday of August. Except in Texas, of course, where it’s held the first Tuesday in October each year. The Azle Police Department will host National Night Out from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7. The department is looking for neighborhood host sites – typically a family who wants to offer its yard as a location where

Best gift for loved ones? Stay well One of the best gifts you can give your loved ones is for you to stay strong and healthy. According to the Centers for Disease Control, about 600,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year – 1 in every 4 deaths. Not sure how to start improving your heart health? Check out the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Simple Seven list: Get Active - Getting at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity each day (such as brisk walking), five times per week, can your lower your chances of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Think about ways to increase physical activity throughout your day by taking such easy measures as parking farther away when grocery shopping or taking that extra lap around the mall. Control Cholesterol – According to the AHA, your liver and your body’s cells make about 75% of the cholesterol in your blood. The other 25% comes from your food. Eat healthy foods that are low in cholesterol, trans fats and saturated fats. A high-fiber diet can also help. Schedule a cholesterol screening and stay current on your health check-ups. Eat Better - Reduce your junk food purchases. Make sure you have healthy, nutritious food on hand, particularly fruits and vegetables. Try serving fish a couple of times a week and increase your fiber intake. Try tracking what you eat. You might be surprised at some of the unhealthy choices that sneak into your daily diet. Manage Blood Pressure – Per the AHA, High Blood Pressure can be managed. While some people require medication to control blood pressure, in other cases, blood pressure can be improved by reducing sodium intake and consuming a heart-healthy diet, increasing physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight, managing stress, going easy on alcohol and avoiding tobacco smoke.

Lose Weight - Too much fat, especially at the midsection, can increase your risk for issues such as high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol and diabetes. Per the American Health Association, obesity is now recognized as a major, independent risk factor for heart disease. Watching your diet and increasing activity go a long way toward helping to reach a healthy weight goal. Reduce Blood Sugar – Many of the Simple Step recommendations work together to help improve your overall health. Physical activity and eating good food can help in this area. Pay particular attention to reducing your consumption of simple sugars that are found in soda, candy and sugary desserts. Stop Smoking – As noted on the AHA website, cigarette smokers have a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease. If you smoke, quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health. If you’ve tried before and failed, don’t be discouraged. Try again. The potential to improve your health and remove a number of health-related risks is worth the effort. Give those you love the very best gift of all – a HEALTHIER YOU! For more information about how the Simple Steps can help you, visit the American Heart Association’s Simple Seven list on their website at: http://mylifecheck.heart.org/Multitab. aspx?NavID=13&CultureCode=en-US. Tons of pain in the 5 stages of drought grief

T

he clouds gathered last Saturday, staging west like a gathering army anxious to advance. You got 15 minutes, Captain Thunderhead

said. So I continued walking the highway, looking for a cell phone that I had left on the truck roof. (Never do that.) Finally, phone-less, the Bride picked me up on our dirt road that I had hours earlier back-breakingly shoveled three tons of rocks out of the bed of two pickups onto to help soon-to-arrive partygoers reach the house easier. I didn’t necessarily believe Captain

Thunderhead. After all, rain always seemed to swing north or south of us, leaving us, well, high and dry on our little Parker County hill. Not this time. The angry hordes from the west charged. Rain began to fall. And fall. And fall. The digital rain gauge, dormant for weeks, budged then bolted. It moved to a quarter inch then one-half quickly. Soon, it was whirling like the meter registering Rod Taylor heading back to ON YOUR the prehistoric era in The Time Machine. MARK We were directly beneath “one of those cells that if you’re right below, Mark K. Campbell you can get a lot of rain,” as the TV

weather people say in gross understatement. Initially, the rain was wonderful as the drought was taking a deserved whuppin’. S o o n , though, the constant downpour forced a change of mind. This clearly was

way too much rain too quickly. Two inches, three inches – all within 30 minutes. And still raining. The five stages of drought grief set in: 1. Denial – “There’s no way this can keep up” as neighboring pastures filled then rushed through their meager barbed wire enclosures. 2. Anger – “This stupid idiot rain!” as water overwhelmed the house gutters and threatened entering the house. 3. Bargaining – “OK, Captain Thunderhead, you win; I’ll stop whining about the drought” as the digital gauge zipped past 4 inches in 40 minutes. 4. Depression – “I’m scared to see what this is doing to our road” as the

rampaging water overwhelmed our culverts from every direction. 5. Acceptance – “Well, I can get a good workout for the next few days” as an examination revealed that most of our dirt/rock road – several tons – was now partially covering Highway 51 three-tenths of a mile below. Hundreds of dollars of road repair material was now piled high – six inches deep in some places – far from its original home. I scooped up the shovel and headed down the mucky hill. Mark K. Campbell is the News editor and it rained 4.24 inches in 50 minutes.

Autocorrect gone wild: The Lawyer and the Geisha

I

Letter to the Editor ‘No strategy’ from president, AKA ‘golfer-in-chief’ Dear Editor: How much more can the human race sink into the abyss of darkness, of mayhem in medieval savagery by Islamic extremist cowards wearing black hoods? Whether it be thousands of innocent civilians murdered in Iraq or two unfortunate journalists who were publicly executed in the most horrific and barbaric manner. Frankly, what is more disturbing is how our president and so-called Commander-in-Chief Barrack Obama

handled his post following the murders of the journalists to reporters and the grieving families recently. Mr. Obama talked of swift justice for the perpetrators and his profound sorrow for the aforementioned parents. One thing is for certain: There was swiftness in the transition from Commander-in-Chief to golfer-in-chief. Not even seven minutes had passed upon the conclusion of the briefing when news footage showed Mr. Obama yanking off that sports coat, fist bumping and high-fiving, and laughing it up with his cronies on the golf course. How can any president be so disingenuous, insensitive, and perverse to an already grieving family? Now add insult to a morose American populace wondering when these

monsters will strike here in our country. Our president stood like a deer in the head lamps and said, “With these terrorists, I have no strategy on how to deal with them.” Later, Mr. Obama said ISIS terrorists are just a manageable problem, as if these deviants – literally from the incubus’ doorstep – are just petulant, misbehaved school brats. In my opinion, the only real strategy that our golfer-in-chief has is how to play another 139 rounds of golf in the next two years off the taxpayers’ dime riding in Air Force One. America: Elections have consequences – this is what happens when 7,000,000 citizens don’t vote.

hile returning from a recent trip to Arkansas, I saw a sign near McAlester, Oklahoma that said “Robbers Cave State Park.” I vaguely remembered reading about the James boys, the Youngers and a lady friend of one of them called Belle Starr hiding out from the law in Oklahoma. Stories say the Dalton and Doolin gangs hid there too. “Aha! That must have been the place,” I realized. Indeed, following the Civil War some of the young men in Missouri who had fought guerillatype warfare on either side of the conflict (but mostly for the South), didn't quite stop the raiding when the war ended. Their activities were not condoned by the war effort anymore. To avoid U.S. Marshalls, they fled Missouri to hide out in the hills of southeastern Indian Territory, now Oklahoma. Stories also are told that some of the family members fled Missouri and

settled in north Texas. Upon occasion the outlaws from Indian Territory visited their relatives in Texas. Rock formations and numerous caves in what is now the Sans Bois Mountains formed a convenient cave for their hideout. Canyons and gorges had been cut from the Fourche Maline Creek, which now has been dammed to form Lake Carleton. A Lookout Point allows a panoramic view of the valley, which would have given the outlaws a good place to scan the horizon for any lawmen entering their territory. Outlaws were not the first humans to inhabit the collection of caves. Centuries earlier various native tribes lived there. Later the Osage and the Caddos moved in. French trappers entered the area as well, including a French explorer named Bernard de la Harpe who came north from Louisiana on August 25, 1719. Harpe was on his way to the Canadian River and some Wichita villages. Because of the French trappers in the area, many French names ex-

portunity to utilize the rugged terrain for a camp in the summertime. The warden of the Oklahoma State Penitentiary volunteered some of his more skilled inmates to build camp improvements like a kitchen and several buildings. They used local rock for the structures. The boy scout camp was named Camp Tom Hale after an early scoutmaster from McAlester, Oklahoma. Then Weaver, the legislator helped create a game preserve near the boy scout camp. During the Depression a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) created in 1933, built a bath house, cabins, trails, group camps, shelters and roads through the area. It became a state park in 1935. Today, folks can camp in various areas and enjoy a restaurant, Nature Center, picnic tables and see lots of mountain scenery. In 1987 the park officials began a Robbers Cave Fall Festival. A Bluegrass Festival began the following year. Approximately 65,000 to 70,000 people attend each October. (For any-

one who might be interested in attending, the date this year is October 17-19, and information can be obtained from the Wilburton Chamber of Commerce. No, nobody asked me to advertise it!) For anyone wanting a quiet, camping weekend, don't go on those dates. Folks at the National Register of Historic Places ushered the park into their registry in 2002. The Robbers Cave State Park is Oklahoma's second largest state park at a bit over 8,000 acres. Footpaths and trails follow some of the terrain that once was used by outlaws. After driving through the beautiful, green hills and mountains of both Arkansas and Oklahoma for three days, one can easily envision how folks who did not want to be found could make themselves scarce in some of those hills, even more so if they found a large cave or two in which to hide. Retired history professor J’Nell Pate of Azle has authored several books, many of which are on sale in the lobby of the Azle News.

Judge: Revisions to abortion law unconstitutional

dards for an abortion facility must be equivalent to the minimum standards adopted for ambulatory surgical centers. Also, Yeakel wrote, the two provisions would act together “to create a scheme that effects the closing of almost all abortion clinics in Texas that were operating legally in the fall of 2013” and thus, “the overall effect . . . is to create an impermissible obstacle as applied to all women seeking a pre-viability abortion.” The case was brought by regional abortion providers in this state who joined together as plaintiffs, seeking to prevent those two provisions of the amended law from taking effect on Sept. 1. The group sued Texas Department of State Health Services Commissioner David Lakey, M.D., and Mari Robinson, executive director of the Texas Medical Board, in their official state capacities. Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott said he would file an ap-

.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel on Aug. 29 struck down two provisions in House Bill 2, legislation passed by the Texas Legislature in the second special session of 2013, amending the state Health and Safety Code to restrict access to abortion services. Yeakel wrote, “A state’s legislature cannot purport to act to abrogate the rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution,” and concluded the following provisions in the law put an unconstitutional burden on women: • That a physician performing or inducing an abortion must, on the date the abortion is performed or induced, have active admitting privileges at a hospital that is located not further than 30 miles from the location at which the abortion is performed or induced. • That the minimum stan-

Financial ratings now available Texas Education Agency on Sept. 5 announced the release of financial accountability ratings for more than 1,205 school districts and 202 charters across the state. The 2013-2014 ratings are based on annual financial reports provided to TEA by districts and charters from the 2012-2013 school year. Based on the submitted information, one of four financial management ratings is assigned: Superior, Above Standard, Standard or Substandard. For 2013-2014, approximately 95 percent of Texas school districts passed with a rating of Standard or above, the education agency said. Ratings are based on 20 established financial indicators, such as operating expenditures for instruction, tax collection rates, student-teacher ratios, and long-term debt. Each school district and charter is required to hold a public

hearing regarding its financial report. Most-ever property returned State Comptroller Susan Combs on Sept. 4 announced the return of more than $205 million in unclaimed property to rightful owners in fiscal year 2014-2015, which ended Aug. 31. This set a record, she said, as the previous high water mark for unclaimed property returned by the agency was $177.6 million in fiscal 2013. Combs said the returned property included forgotten utility deposits or other refunds, insurance proceeds, payroll checks, cashier’s checks, dividends, mineral royalties, dormant bank accounts and abandoned safe deposit box contents. Veteran state reporter and legislative analyst Ed Sterling is member services director for the Texas Press Association, whose 518 member newspapers have combined circulation of 3.7 million.

Azle Christian School blasts Savoy 67-22 Azle Christian School (2-0) routinely trounces fellow private school football teams. Now the highly-rated sixman Crusaders have dropped a pair of public school teams. The latest victim was Savoy, 67-22 – once again, ACS kicked in the “mercy rule” by taking a 45-point lead; this time it came in the fourth quarter. QB Joey Rosamond had another superior evening. He hit 20-of-32 passes for 321 yards and a stunning 8 touchdowns. Defensively, Rosamond was credited with 6 solo tackles, assisted on 6 more, and carded 2 sacks. End Alex Schardt caught 9 passes for 125 yards and a trio of TDs.

On the other side of the ball, Schardt intercepted 2 Cardinal passes. For the second week in a row, he returned a pick for a TD, this one for 55 yards. Wide receiver Jake Bartell caught 7 balls for 123 yards and 4 TDs – all in less than a half. He exited the game midway through the second quarter with an ankle injury. Another standout, coach Gary Rushing said, was Cody Warren who was the defensive star of the game. Warren had 7 solo tackles, 5 assists, a sack, and an interception. Azle Christian was originally scheduled to play a third public school team – meeting Sanderson out west in Water Valley – but that game has been can- Crusader Josh Crawford (19) fends off a Savoy tackler in ACS’ mercy-rule victory. Movie Man

Wednesday, September 10, 2014

Food movie light on weight, heavier on corn With rare exceptions, women as they age don’t get primo, meaty roles. Age is much less often an issue for men actors than women. About the film Three female actors seem immune to the cinematic “glass ceiling” – Judi Dench, Meryl Streep, and Helen Mirren. Dench, 79, continues to impress; looking back, her career is laden with every sort of award. She appears in art house movies like last year’s Philomena (2013, Movie Man No. 1073, 7) and blockbusters like the 2012 James Bond thriller Skyfall (MM # 1008, 8). You can find the Movie Man parked in front of the TV every Sunday night when PBS runs As Time Goes By. No one is hotter than Streep, 65, the greatest female actor ever. A preview before this week’s The Hundred-Foot Walk featured her in a Christmastime release, the popular musical Into the Woods. Streep has been Oscar-nominated a stunning 18 times, winning three – as Best Supporting Actress (1979, Kramer vs. Kramer) and as Best Actress (1982, Sophie’s Choice and 2011, The Iron Lady). The Movie Man holds her in high regard for her effervescent part in the wonderful Albert Brooks’ Defending Your Life (1991; the Movie Man only owns about 10 movies and this is one of them). Then there’s Mirren who, at 69, continues to shine. Initially a wild child and uninhibited actress – as a Google search will prove – she, like Dench, has a history performing in any realm, serious or comedic, stage or screen: stage (a variety of Shakespearian plays), movies big and small, (she won an Oscar for 2005’s The Queen), and TV (Prime Suspect). The Movie Man really liked Mirren recently in 2012’s

Hitchcock (MM #1,012, 7). To a lesser degree than this trio of women, others have survived the “young woman’s game” of Hollywood. Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, 53, has never been hotter, primarily as a TV actress, however. A case can be made for Susan Sarandon, still working in her 67th year. Julianne Moore (53), too, is still active along with Glenn Close (67) and Kathy Bates (66). Jodie Foster, 51, has morphed into a hyphenate – actor-director-producer which will make her someone with clout as long as she wants. She owns two Best Actress Oscars for The Accused (1988) and The Silence of the Lambs (1991), but, like plenty of others in these “Golden Age” days of television, she leans that direction. So, while older female actresses struggle with image while so many men don’t have to – Brad Pitt (50), Johnny Depp (51), George Clooney (53), and Richard Gere (65), to name a few – a handful of ladies have managed to remain on the top shelf.

Paws for effect: By Natalie Gentry An Azle family has been hard at work raising money to provide their son with a lifesaving tool – a diabetic alert dog. Six-year-old Aden Witherell is growing up with an array of ailments: asthma, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and Asperger Syndrome – a high functioning autism spectrum disorder; he has been a patient of The Autism Treatment Center of Fort Worth since July 2012. The center assists with the development of effective language, communication, social skills, and sensory integration in patients on the autism spectrum. Another complication In addition to all Aden’s woes, last Dec. 29, he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), this type of diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults. It was previously known as juvenile diabetes. Only five percent of people with diabetes have this form of the disease. The addition of diabetes to Aden’s list of conditions has added a life-threatening element to the equation. Aden requires multiple daily insulin injections to keep his blood glucose level in a safe range. His insulin and ketone numbers spike and drop erratically even with constant carbohydrate and insulin ratio monitoring. These highs and lows are so severe that his parents – Nathan

Azle family raising funds for diabetic alert dog for 6-year-old

and Lindsey Witherell – have to take turns sleeping at night in order to monitor Aden’s levels. His typical day involves at least eight finger pricks as long as his numbers stay consistent. “That’s a minimum,” Lindsey said. “When his ketones or blood glucose levels are dangerously high or low, he requires more frequent testing.” In the last year, the Witherells have made several nighttime trips to Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth for medical assistance once all at-home attempts have failed to correct his glucose levels or ketones. Due to the erratic fluctuation in his blood sugar levels Aden’s activities have become somewhat limited. “He can’t run all-out like other children,” Lindsey explained. “If he does, his blood sugar will drop quickly.” Aden has restrictions that limit the amount of time he can ride his bike, swim, chase bugs and do all the childhood things that little boys do. A new opportunity At doctors’ urging, the Witherells applied for a service dog specifically trained to assist Aden and his parents with monitoring his blood glucose. This diabetic alert dog (DAD) will also provide Aden with comfort and aid in selfcalming when he is faced with autism challenges. “Our hope is to give Aden as much of a normal life as possible, his family peace of mind, and, who knows, maybe even a full night’s sleep for mom and dad,” said Jacquelyn Waters,

Like any 6-year-old, Aden loves to be outside – however the erratic fluctuation of his blood glucose and ketones due to his Type 1 Diabetes prevent him from doing all the things young children want to do. Photo courtesy Lindsey Witherell

Aden’s aunt. The family chose to apply for a service dog through Drey’s Alert Dogs in Jasper – and was accepted. “We were able to raise the $1,000, deposit for a puppy that

was born the week of July 28.” Water’s said. “But after a lot of conversations between Aden’s parents and the coordinator at Drey’s, they decided on an older puppy.”

Enter Nova The pup that Nathan, Lindsey, and the coordinator ultimately paired with Aden is a British Labrador Retriever named Nova. According to Drey’s website, British Labs easily attach to an individual and eagerly want to please humans. “They are known to have a calmer nature and a smaller build than the American Labrador,” the site said. “We found that this breed has all the capable skills, and whose more appropriate size makes it the ideal dog to do all the jobs that he or she might be asked to do, yet – due to their smaller build – still live inside comfortably.” Although not the service animal the Witherell’s had first planned on, they think that Nova may be the best choice. “We believe this has worked in our favor,” said Lindsey. “Nova’s handlers have been able to observe his personality and believe this is a good match for the cross training that Nova and Aden will need.” Nova has previously been trained on generic swabs to recognize dangerous highs and lows in blood glucose and ketones. The family was able to pay the $1,000 deposit so that Nova can now start to train for Aden’s’ specific needs using swabs of saliva gathered from Aden when his counts are high and low. The training at Drey’s also includes techniques such as hands-on training with Aden – which requires visits to Jasper a couple times a month between

now and receipt of the service animal. This mutual training will enhance Nova’s abilities to recognize when Aden is being challenged with his Asperger and will allow Aden to learn to trust Nova’s instincts and accept the calming affects the dog can bring to his life. Once the training is completed, Nova will be Aden’s constant companion; staying by his side at home, in public, and at school. The dog will also sleep by the six year old and will be trained to alert Nathan and Lindsey – via an alarm button – if Aden’s ketones or glucose levels drop during the night. “It will be so nice to be able to get a full night’s sleep knowing Nova will let us know if Aden needs us,” Lindsey said. The next challenge The final hurdle the family faces is raising the $19,000 to complete the purchase and training of this life-saving dog. If the balance can be raised by Dec. 15, it is possible that Aden could have his service dog with him when he returns to school after Christmas break. Providing Aden with all his medication and taking him to the treatment center and doctor’s visits has been difficult on the Witherell’s finances, and this significant added expense is simply too much for them to achieve alone. Friends of the family have set up a Go Fund Me account online and that total combined with the collection boxes at loPLEASE SEE FUNDS, PAGE 4B.

Adhering to your vehicle’s maintenance schedule serves many purposes, including improving the its durability and protecting various components, including its cooling system and drivetrain. wear down to metal. * Keep your tires properly inflated. Tires that are underinflated will negatively impact your vehicle’s fuel efficiency. In addition, the tires’ life expectancy is reduced considerably when tires are not properly inflated. Routinely check your tire pressure, especially if you drive a lot, and keep tires inflated at the pressure recommended in your vehicle’s owner’s manual. * Be mindful when filling up your tank. Many people do not pay much attention to their surroundings when pulling into the filling station. But when you fill up can impact your car’s life expectancy. Perhaps the worst time to fill your tank is when the fuel tanker is in the gas station refilling the underground tanks. That’s because the process of filling the underground tanks can stir up sediment that had settled at the bottom of those tanks. If that sediment finds its way into your vehicle’s gas tank, it can clog filters and fuel injectors and negatively affect the vehicle’s performance. So unless your car is running on empty, avoid refilling its gas tank when the tanker is still in the station. * Take care of your vehicle’s interior, too. Caring for a car is not just about being good to what’s under the hood. Caring for the car’s interior will not necessarily impact its performance, but a well-kept interior will improve how you look at your vehicle and how much you enjoy driving it. The longer you enjoy driving your vehicle, the longer you are likely to keep it. Preserve the vehicle’s door and window seals; clean the dashboard, including the gauges, vacuum the floor mats; and wipe down the vehicle’s interior, whether it’s cloth or leather. Keeping up the appearance of the car’s interior will make the vehicle more enjoyable to drive and increase its value at resale.

Car battery maintenance in extreme weather Few things can be more frustrating than jumping into the driver’s seat on a frosty morning, turning the key in the ignition and failing to hear the engine roar to life. Frigid weather can cause trouble with a car’s battery. Some drivers do not understand why, but getting the facts can help people avoid having to deal with dead batteries on cold winter days. Cold temperatures wreak havoc on batteries because they slow the chemical reaction inside of the battery. Batteries work by combining lead plates with lead dioxide and sulfuric acid to create electrons. While

batteries can function under myriad conditions, the cold weather tends to degrade highquality batteries and may render subpar batteries useless. The cold weather can cause the fluid in the battery to freeze and lose function. A battery that is frozen will not hold a charge, and, as a result, the car won’t start. There are various ways to protect a battery from failure in the cold, and some of them involve taking precautionary measures even before the arrival of cold weather. * Assess the age of your battery. If your battery is old, now

may be the time to replace it. Batteries differ in how long they last, but many last anywhere from five to 10 years. If your car is still running on its original battery and your car is several years old, it may be a good idea to get a new battery before the arrival of winter. Battery size will not necessarily provide better starting. It’s important to buy the correct battery for the make of your car, which can usually be found inside of the owner’s manual. * Verify that there is no corrosion. Corrosion can prevent a car from starting just as much as a worn-out battery. Corro-

sion is caused by a faulty connection that allows battery acid to escape and corrode surrounding areas. Regularly inspect the battery to keep abreast of issues that may cause corrosion. Carefully clean away any corrosive residue that has formed and make sure the battery is correctly seated. * Install a battery blanket. A battery blanket is used to wrap around the battery and fit inside of the battery cover. A cord with a plug runs from the blanket to a wall outlet. The blanket can produce enough heat to keep the battery fluid from freezing. A trickle charger can

also be mounted on the battery. It will deliver enough power to the battery while the car is off to keep it from freezing. * Minimize the use of automotive accessories. Do not start the car with the heater and the radio on. They can use up the power coming from the car’s alternator and prevent the battery from charging. Do not leave the heat and the radio on while the car is idling. Otherwise the car will not be putting out enough power for the alternator to charge the battery and power the electrical systems.

* Disconnect the battery. If your car will be stored in a garage for the winter, disconnect the battery. Certain devices, such as clocks and alarm systems, continue to drain battery power when the vehicle is off. If your car will not be driven enough to recharge the battery, keep it disconnected when the automobile is being stored. Cold weather can sometimes wreak havoc on vehicles. Knowing how to skirt trouble with your car’s battery can keep your car on the road throughout the winter.

Things to know about motor oil When it comes to taking care of their vehicles, many motorists prefer to be overly cautious. While that’s not necessarily a bad thing, there are times when being too cautious can unnecessarily cost you money. Motor oil, and when to change that oil, has long been a point of contention. Many drivers grew up being told that motor oil should be changed every 3,000 miles. However, that myth has been debunked for many of today’s vehicles, which should come with suggested intervals between oil changes. According to Edmunds.com, in 2010 the average interval for oil changes was 7,800 miles. In addition to changing a car’s motor oil less frequently, there are other things drivers should know

about motor oil. * Oil does not necessarily need to be changed before a long trip. Taking a trip? While it’s good to have your car examined before embarking, if the recommended oil change interval is not up, then you do not need to preemptively change your oil. Such a change is likely unnecessary and will not improve the performance of your vehicle during the trip. * Black oil does not necessitate a change. Conventional wisdom once suggested if the oil on the dipstick is black then it needs to be changed. But nowadays automotive professionals are noting that black oil is doing its job and different additives might be changing the oil’s color, which means the oil doesn’t need to be changed.

* You can use petroleumbased oil after using synthetic. Another longstanding myth regarding motor oil was that once you use a synthetic motor oil instead of a petroleumbased oil you have to continue using synthetic oil, which is often more expensive than more traditional motor oil, in order to avoid harming the vehicle. However, automotive professionals have noted that these two types of oils are now often blended, meaning switching back and forth from one to the other is not likely to cause any damage to your vehicle. Just be sure to use motor oil that meets the standards set forth in your vehicle’s owner’s manual. * Consider an earlier oil change after buying a new vehicle. Sometimes a new vehicle

ASE Certified

will need an oil change after its first 3,000 miles. However, this does not mean your vehicle will need one every 3,000 miles. According to Blackstone Laboratories, who study motor oil, oil samples taken from engines during their initial 3,000 miles of driving had elevated metal levels from the camshafts and pistons. These elevated levels will not necessarily be harmful, but some auto manufacturers recommend a shorter initial interval just to be safe. Honda, however, includes an anti-wear additive in their break-in oil and advises against changing their oil early. Consult your owner’s manual to determine if it’s best to change your oil after the initial 3,000 miles or to let it go until the recommended interval.

The same type of scam that County for almost six weeks has been plaguing Tarrant has now been reported in Parker County. The suspects then threaten the victim with the issuance of an arrest warrant if the victim refuses to pay the fine. The caller instructs the victim to pay the alleged fine by using a debit or credit card, over the phone. Victims are requested to provide their debit or credit card number along with the threedigit security code located on the back of the card. The suspects end the call by directing the victim to contact the county courthouse or county clerk in order to remove the victim’s alleged warrant in light of their “payment.” Sheriff Fowler said county officials do not advise residents of failure to appear for jury duty or warrant notifications by phone. “It’s disheartening to see anyone scammed out of their

hard-earned money,” Fowler said. “These suspects carry out devious actions and their scheme is calculated. Parker County officials certainly do not contact citizens seeking payments for fines over the phone.” The Parker County Sheriff’s Office sends failure to appear notices only by the United States Postal Service. Sheriff Fowler encourages residents to contact his office to report any suspicious calls from individuals soliciting money.
