Teens shot, man assaulted at party in eastern Parker County All 3 victims expected to recover; suspects sought by carla noah stutsman Two teenagers were shot and a 24-year-old man beaten following an argument between several people attending a party Saturday night, Nov. 22, in the 400 block of Calhoun Bend Road south of Azle. According to a press release from the Parker County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), a 19-year-old male who suffered a gunshot wound to his left arm and a 17-year-old male who sustained
a gunshot wound to his right shoulder were both believed to be in fair and stable condition Sunday afternoon, Nov. 23. Both appear to have been shot with a small-caliber hand gun. However, the third victim, a 24-yearold male, was in serious condition the same day after suffering a physical assault about his head and face. Medical staff at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Azle reported the
incident to Azle Police at 5:42 a.m. Sunday, according to the press release. Lt. Bill Russell with the Azle Police Department said when Azle officers responded to the hospital, they found chaos, but were able to determine the incident had happened in unincorporated Parker County. PCSO, who has jurisdiction at the incident location, was notified, and PLEASE SEE PARTY, PAGE 2A.

Roll over on Walnut Creek Dr. hurts 1 By Natalie Gentry Springtown firefighters responding to a motor vehicle accident call Monday, Nov. 24 arrived to find Karen Lindsey, 57, of Springtown trapped in her red Ford F150. According to Springtown police, Lindsey had been traveling east in the 1300 block of Walnut Creek Drive when her vehicle veered off the roadway. Lindsey over-corrected and the pickup ended up on its side in trees on the side of the road. While a paramedic sat inside the cab with Lindsey, members of the Springtown VFD used the “jaws of life” extrication tool to cut the roof from the vehicle. Lindsey – awake and communicating with first responders – was transported to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth. Her injury status was unknown at First responders remove and later transport Karen Lindsey from her vehicle after it ended up on its side in the 1300 block of Walnut press time. Creek Drive Nov. 24. thing bad was going to happen if they didn’t put a stop to it, and now it has.” The woman voiced her frustration that law enforcement has not done more to stop the activities at the residence, especially in light of multiple calls from neighbors in the area to complain. She said her family has been forced indoors when the shooting starts, the woman said, for fear of a stray bullet. The woman also said she was saddened and horrified – but not surprised – to learn the shootings and assault occurred at a party attended by more than 50 people. “It’s not uncommon for 50 people to be there,” she said. The woman also described a large sign she says has been hanging on the gate at the entrance to the residence for at
least a few years. The sign reads in part: “If you were not invited turn back now or this shall be your final resting place.” “Did it really have to come to this?” she asked. Saying she is glad all three victims will survive, she continued. “This could have just as easily been a massacre, with many kids dead.” An order approved by the Parker County Commissioners Court March 6, 2009, restricts shooting – except for protection of all personal property, self-defense, livestock, and varmint extermination – on lots smaller than 10 acres located inside platted subdivisions in the county. However, the specific property on Calhoun Bend is not located in a platted subdivision; therefore, the restriction does not apply.
A nearby resident submitted this photo of a sign she says has been displayed on the entry gate at a residence on Calhoun Bend Road for several years. An argument during a party at the residence led to the shooting of two teenage males and the assault of a 24-yearold man Saturday night or early Sunday morning, Nov. 22-23.

Winds fuel 30-acre fire By Natalie Gentry Area fire departments received calls at 4:24 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23 about a quickmoving grass fire near McVoid Road when a Springtown resident burning brush lost control of the fire due to high winds . The fire spanned approximately 30 acres and threatened six structures. However, units from Springtown, La Junta, Central, Reno, Briar, and Azle kept the flames from reaching those buildings and got the fire under control within an hour.
The last unit cleared at 6:41 p.m. “Even though we had rain Saturday, we had a dry northwest wind on Sunday that dried vegetation out quickly,” Parker County Fire Marshal George Teague said. “With the winds we had going, it was ill advised to be burning,” he said Teague reminded residents to check with the Fire Marshal’s office at 817-598-0969 on the day they are going to burn to make sure conditions allow for safe outdoor burning.

Annual Christmas on the Square arrives here Dec. 6 By Natalie Gentry Each December for the last 20 years, Christmas on the Square has provided Springtown residents with a fun combination of holiday entertainment and shopping. This year‘s event is set for Saturday, Dec. 13 from 11 a.m.5 p.m. Holiday shopping A variety of vendors have secured booths on the square. Guests can purchase items like handmade jewelry and leather items, as well as crocheted pieces, crosses, and watches. Vendors representing Pampered Chef, Thirty-one, Scentsy, and Premier Jewelry will have booths full of items available to buy. Health and beauty products

Christmas decorations – deco-mesh wreaths and ornaments – will be displayed and available for purchase to add that last touch of holiday cheer. The Carter BloodCare Bus will be set up again this year at the southeast corner of the Square so guests can give the gift of life. Visitors will find a petting zoo in the northwest corner to give the kids a place to interact with fun, furry critters while

The staff of the Epigraph exists for one reason – the people of Springtown. An annual winner of multiple awards at several journalism contests judged by its peers – including the current Photographer and Journalist of the Year – the Epigraph’s dedicated staff is determined to bring readers total coverage of every nook and cranny of Springtown. After all, we’re documenting the history of a small Texas town, an honor that isn’t taken lightly. We jam the Epigraph full of stories and photography on school issues as well as pieces on budgets, crime, accidents, fires, residential development, the local economy, and a host of other things that are newsworthy to Springtown folk. And receiving the newspaper in the mail or buying one at a business isn’t the only way to keep up with town goings-on. The paper has a booming Twitter audience – @SpringtownEpi – as well as an invigorating Facebook presence and a popular web site. Reporters regularly Tweet and publish up-to-the minute information on breaking stories in town. Clearly, Springtown is far from “a sleepy Texas town” – the Epigraph proves that weekly!
The paper covers it all: from the gridiron to the council chambers. Oh, other news organizations pop into Springtown when something big arises. But the Epigraph is always here – week in and week out – chronicling the pulse of our community. In the paper you’ll find youth achievements, updates on service organizations, local men and women in military, anniversaries, weddings, and school activities. Not to mention special sections like the Wild West Festival, graduation, and the popular Letters to Santa. Plus there are columns and stories written by award-winning local authors who address vital city, state, and national interests – and some perhaps not so urgent – often with a unique sense of Lone Star humor. Epigraph photographs have won accolades for years on end. Reporters live and shop here and have a vested interest in Springtown. The Epigraph is an exceptional paper, and there’s a reason for that: It serves a great community.

Send me an Angel Senior Angel Tree needs help this season By Natalie Gentry The Springtown Chamber of Commerce has almost 50 adoptees on this year’s Senior Angel Tree. The Chamber and Neighbor to Neighbors Food Pantry are working hard to ensure that every one of these seniors have a merry Christmas. Anyone wishing to adopt a Senior Citizen Angel may stop by the office from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Thursday or Friday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. to choose one. The office will be closed Nov. 26-28 for the Thanksgiving holiday. Place purchases in gift bags and tissue paper; do not wrap them. Gifts are due back in the office no later than Dec. 12 so that they can be organized and ready for pick-up or delivery in time for Christmas. This year’s angels will receive their gifts on Dec. 19. Individuals or businesses that don’t have time to shop may make monetary donations to the Springtown Chamber of Commerce. For more information contact the Chamber of Commerce office at 112 South Main, or call 817-220-7828.
Information about each of the Springtown Senior angels is provided on the adoption sheets to assist with shopping. Photo by Natalie Gentry

And if you aren’t good enough with all that you are doing, certainly no one else is good enough and the result is that it is awfully hard to be grateful in a world where nothing is ever good enough. I have bad news and good news. The bad news is that neither you nor anyone else will EVER be good enough in a performance based worldview. If you are trying to make God or anyone else happy by what you do, it will NEVER be enough. The good news is that our lives matter enough to God that he sent Jesus in His perfect “more than enough” to meet us at our “not enough” and deliver us from a performance based worldview to a relationship based worldview. When God looks at us through our relationship with Jesus, He sees enough. How could we not be thankful?
Thanksgiving buster… not good enough
I
had a great idea for my Thanksgiving week column. I was going to talk about how I am going to boycott every store that opens on Thanksgiving Day and do none of my Black Friday shopping there. Throughout the course of the column I was going to admit that I don’t participate in Black Friday anyway, not because of principle, but because I would rather take a beating than be in the middle of all that craziness. And then I was going to talk about how we should probably all lighten up on the things we let get under our skin. I’m really not a boycott person. That’s what I was going to write about. And then my mind went down a rabbit trail. (Or maybe, for this week, we should call it a turkey trail). I have spoken and written for years on my observation that Thanksgiving has become a second-class holiday for two reasons: (1) because it is difficult to commercialize, and (2) because we are largely an ungrateful culture. But today I am wondering WHY we are so ungrateful. Is it because we are spoiled and self-absorbed? Maybe.
But I think it may also be a common underlying belief that nothing (and no one) is ever good enough. I’m guilty of it myself. Much of my life is dedicated to helpLIFE MATTERS ing leaders and churches Gerry Lewis be more effective. I’m constantly exploring and tweaking my own processes and habits, looking for the slightest improvement. I think that’s a really good thing if we are seeking to grow and to be lifelong learners. It’s a not-so-good thing if the message is “you need to get better and do better because right now you are not good enough.” If you would only pray for 15 more minutes, get involved in one more ministry project, give one more percent of your income to the church or a charitable cause,

The Wampanoag side of the Thanksgiving story – Part 2
W
hen the Wampanoag showed up, they were invited to join the Pilgrims in their feast, but there was not enough food to feed the chief and his 90 warriors. “He [Massasoit] sends his men out, and they bring back five deer, which they present to the chief of the English town [William Bradford]. So, there is this whole ceremonial gift-giving, as well. When you give it as a gift, it is more than just food,” said Kathleen Wall, a Colonial Foodways Culinarian at Plimoth Plantation. “The harvest feast lasted for three days. What did they eat? Venison, of course, and Wall said, ‘Not just a lovely roasted joint of venison, but all the parts of the deer were on the table in who knows how many sorts of ways.’ Was there turkey? ‘Fowl’ is mentioned in Winslow’s account, which puts turkey on Wall’s list of possibilities. She also said there probably would have
the ‘atrocities’ and ‘broken promises’ his people endured. “On the Wa m p a n o a g welcoming and having friendly relations with the Pilgrims, HISTORICAL James wrote his undelivHIGHLIGHTS in ered speech: action Laurie Moseley ‘This by Massasoit was perhaps our biggest mistake. We, the Wampanoag, welcomed you, the white man, with open arms, little knowing that it was the beginning of the end.’” The traditions and celebrations have evolved since that “first” Thanksgiving, and American families have found their own way of creating and preserving traditions. The cornucopia,
the big, stuffed turkey, warm homes packed with the people we love – all these images make us proud to be Americans. The idea of sharing our feast and blessings is often demonstrated by volunteering to serve food at a local homeless shelters or by inviting friends or acquaintances to the family gathering who might otherwise be lonely. Some families include in their annual celebrations the speaking of thanks by going around the room so each person can say at least one thing that she/ he is thankful for. Saying prayers of thanksgiving before the meal is another way we verbalize sentiments of gratitude. Most Thanksgiving celebrations involve at least several of the guests gathering around the TV to watch the Macy’s Day Parade and a football game. All of these activities serve to instill in our minds the values we share as a nation: open-minds, sacrifice, giving, family relationships, gratitude…

Turner said, ‘For the most part, Thanksgiving itself is a day of mourning for Native people, not just Wampanoag people.’ “At noon on every Thanksgiving Day, hundreds of Native people from around the country gather at Cole's Hill, which overlooks Plymouth Rock, for the National Day of Mourning. The idea of being consciously aware of our blessings and expressing our own gratitude to God and others for many good things in life is a legacy we carry on with vibrant enthusiasm. Sharing a meal with others is one of the most basic expressions of the Thanksgiving celebration. Being together and sharing our bounties is a universal human instinct. Most of our Thanksgiving traditions center around the theme of giving thanks. Even in these times of economic upheaval, political uncertainty, and personal challenges, we do indeed have many things to be thankful for. Many of our blessings are intangible: health, education, family, freedom, and protected human rights. This aspect of our Thanksgiving holiday stirs pride and patriotism in our hearts. Boys open promising hoops year with win over Stephenville Porcupines overcome 9-point halftime deficit by mark k. campbell The 2014-15 Porcupine basketball team got off to a slow start but stormed back in the second half to win its opener, 50-43, over visiting Stephenville. Springtown (1-0) managed just 14 first half points. In fact, both teams staggered out of the blocks – neither squad pointed until a Porcupine bucket at the 4 minute, 15 second mark. Springtown built a 6-0 lead, but the Yellow Jackets finally got going and scored the next 15 points. The visitors led at halftime 23-14. But the Porcupines came out from the break and began hitting buckets. By the end of the third period, Springtown has wrested the lead away, 32-30, limiting Stephenville to just 7 points. The Porcupines locked the game down with an 18-13 final quarter advantage. Mockingjay sets up major battle – for next year It’s really Star Wars’ fault. When that movie hit so big in 1977 and word got out that two more were in the pipeline, fans went crazy with anticipation. It seemed like it took forever for 1980 and 1983 to arrive with The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The trilogy craze was on. About the film Trilogies had arrived before the Star Wars trio, but they weren’t planned as such. The Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns ended up being a three-set back in the 1960’s – A Fistful of Dollars (1964), For a Few Dollars More (1965), and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966) – but they weren’t packaged as such initially. A trio of Jurassic Parks arrived, but the latter two were straight up sequels. One set of movies that is a bona fide trilogy are the Back to the Future films. I, II, and III were mapped out and released in 1985, 1989, and 1990. Three other planned threesomes include The Matrix (1999 and 2003) series, The Dark Knight (2005, 2008, 2012) trio, and the Lord of the Rings (2001, 2002, 2003) movies. Then movies began to get stretched out. Twilight, a book trilogy, had its final novel, Breaking Dawn, broken into two parts for moviegoers – 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012. While the films were laughably bad, they followed the footsteps of one Harry Potter. The Hunger Games is following suit with its third book, Mockingjay, being split into two parts. (It remains to be seen if the Divergent threesome will have its final book, Allegiant, turned into two parts.) The splitting process is a proven hit. The Breaking Dawn movies made $281.3 million and $292.3, for Parts 1 and 2, respectively. A single movie would’ve likely collected the
amount their predecessors did, around $300-$325 million. Look for Mockingjay, Part 1 and Part 2 (due next Nov. 20) to shatter Twilight’s two-part marks. Already Mockingjay, Part 1 set the record for advance ticket sales and will certainly reel in the current biggest moneymaker of 2014 so far, Guardians of the Galaxy’s $330.5 million. The plot (spoiler) After the destruction of her home District 12, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) has been housed in the secret District 13. The rebel forces, led by President Coin (Julianne Moore), need a hero, someone to look up to. Lawrence ignited a desire for freedom and Plutarch (Philip Seymour Hoffman), tries to convince Moore that Lawrence as the “Mockingjay” can be that uniting force. But Lawrence isn’t interested. With her beloved Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) taken to the Capitol – and issuing disturbing televised anti-rebel statements – Lawrence is focused on saving him. Finally, she comes around, but her first attempts at filmed Mockingjay propaganda fall flat. That’s when sending her out on a real mission does the trick. Lawrence’s heartfelt dis-

Movie Man tress at seeing mass casualties in a makeshift hospital translates into TV gold. From the Capitol, President Snow (Donald Sutherland) has it out for Lawrence. A clandestine operation to save Hutcherson – with a still-sweet-on-Lawrence Gale (Liam Hemsworth) a member – works. Or does it...
pining for Hutcherson with a single tear moseying down her cheek and her singing a mournful folky rebel tune “The Hanging Tree” – that she still manages to pull off. The real saving grace actingwise comes from the old pros. It almost hurts to see the late Hoffman onscreen. (The movie is dedicated to him.) There are some almost painful (in a bad way) scenes –
The special effects are outstanding. The futuristic warships are cool and the decimated districts look great, all smoking and rubble. Best scene (spoiler) The victors held hostage in the Capitol, including Hutcherson, have been freed and returned to District 13. Finally, Lawrence will see her beloved boyfriend. In the medical area, his back is to her. She approaches and Lawrence gets her first glance at Hutcherson. And he’s been beaten to a pulp. Lawrence’s horrified reaction is perfect. Then what happens next explains Hemsworth’s concern that 13’s extrication force’s escape from the Capitol seemed way too easy... What doesn’t work Man, there is a ton of teenage angst. Again, this is a YA adaptation. But sometimes Mockingjay 1 gets far too close to Twilight land. More than once, the Movie Man laughed out loud at the “sincere” pining go-

Young driver indicted for hit-and-run death The Parker County Grand Jury returned an indictment against Morgan Lopatesky of Weatherford Thursday, Nov. 20. Lopatesky is charged with accident involving personal injury or death – more commonly called “hit-and-run.”

which a death was caused in the accident. According to a press release from the Parker County District Attorney’s Office, Lopatesky was 16 at the time of the alleged offense but is 17 now. She was certified to stand

Upon her return, the Hudson Oaks PD detective who interviewed her did not notice any odor of alcohol on Lopatesky or any signs of intoxication, according to his testimony at the hearing. Her blood alcohol level, tested some hours later, was 0.00.

Expert tips for special occasion hair styles Special occasions and parties crop up over the course of a typical year. Be it weddings, birthday parties or anniversary galas, friends and families often gather to celebrate especially momentous events. Part of the excitement of these events is donning formalwear or cocktail attire and enlisting the help of beauty experts to look your best for these memorable events. Experienced hair stylists and makeup artists can transform your look from basic to glam in a short amount of time, and women often rely on the professional expertise of cosmetologists to help them create the perfect party look. April Cornelius, a professional stylist and owner of the business Bridal Hair by April (www.bridalhairbyapril.com), says, “Usually the hair stylist and makeup artist work together and have an easy flow of the clients. They work in conjunction to create looks that are not easily executed by an amateur.” For those with hectic social schedules, Cornelius shares her secrets of hair success to ensure you put your best face forward at the next big occasion. Once the decision has been made to use a professional stylist to work on your hair for a special occasion, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure success. The first step is finding a stylist with whom you will have a good rapport. Ask your regular salon stylist if he or she does special occasion work, or ask for a referral from a friend or family member who has used someone in the past. Cornelius warns against taking drastic measures with your hair within two to three weeks of the event. “Try not to schedule a cut or color right before the party,” she says. “Otherwise you may be stuck with a color or shorter cut than what you wanted. Also, spend time in advance to talk to your stylist about suggested cuts and colors that may enhance your hairdo.” Once you get your gown, hair accessories and veil, schedule a trial run so that the stylist can walk you through different options. “Hair styles are usually based on the type of dress you are wearing, and the stylist can suggest different things,” says Cornelius. “If you choose a style that requires more or party longer hair, the stylist can often adjust by using temporary

The many benefits of buying locally Buying locally is a great way for consumers to find the products and services they’re looking for and help their local economy along the way. The small businesses in your community may be owned by your next door neighbor, who relies

of ways. • Buying locally creates jobs. The number of unemployed men and women has gradually declined in recent years, but those figures are still high in many communities. Buying locally creates jobs in your community, potentially creating a job for you or a friend or family member. • Buying locally helps the environment. Buying within your community reduces the amount of fuel you’re likely to use for a weekend shopping trip while also reducing pollution. In addition, many local store owners use local materials and ingredients, reducing the amount of fuel consumed to get products into the store.
• Buying locally creates a more closely knit community. Juggling a career and a family can make it hard for men and women to get to know their neighbors and other members of their community. Buying locally is an opportunity to strengthen that bond with your neighbors, creating a close knit community in which residents may feel safer and more comfortable. • Buying locally is more convenient. Convenience is paramount to many consumers, and buying locally saves both time and money. Driving to a faraway mall or shopping center or paying costly online shipping fees is not nearly as quick or convenient as shopping within your community,
where you can purchase and take home items on the same day without using a full tank of gas or paying for shipping. • Buying locally benefits your local economy. In 2004, the consultancy Civic Economics was commissioned by Chicago’s Andersonville Chamber of Commerce to examine the economic impact of 10 local businesses against that of chain businesses. The study found that of every $100 spent at local businesses, $68 remained in the local economy, while only $43 of every $100 spent at chain stores remained in the local economy. That’s a significant boost to your local economy, and all it requires is shopping at local retailers.

• Buying locally can increase your property value. Homeowners might be able to increase the value of their homes by buying locally. A joint study from Independent We Stand and Civic Economics found that cities with a strong centralized small business district had a 54 percent greater increase in property values than communities that did not have such a district. A more thriving local community, including a thriving shopping district, is no doubt attractive to prospective home buyers. The reasons for shopping locally are many. In addition to helping local business owners, consumers who shop locally are also helping themselves.
