Hughes named new city administrator

Awesome Autumn

Pro-Tem Smith will act as mayor by Natalie Gentry Doug Hughes has served the City of Springtown as mayor for almost eight years now. That will soon change. The City Council voted to hire Hughes as the new city administrator at the Nov. 20 regular council meeting. The City advertised the open position on the Texas Municipal League job opening website beginning at the end of September following the notice of resignation of Mark Krey. Krey’s official last day is Dec. 31. The process “Multiple resumes were submitted during the month of October,” Krey said. “I reviewed the resumes and submitted seven for potential invitations to interview to council at the October meeting.” Hughes submitted his resume as well and interviewed

for the position in October. The council selected four candidates to invite for interviews on Saturday, Nov. 15. One applicant withdrew prior to the meeting due to being selected for another position he had applied for. “The Council interviewed the three applicants on Nov. 15 and passed on selecting any of those but instead looked at Doug again,” Krey said. According to Krey, the majority of the council preferred Hughes. At the November meeting, an executive session was held for a final discussion on whether to select Hughes as the new administrator. Hughes recused himself from the meeting. When the council reopened in public meeting Hughes resigned as Mayor and the council voted 3-2 to hire him and authorize the Mayor Pro Tem Tony Smith to negotiate PLEASE SEE SMITH, PAGE 2A.

Tour of Homes here Dec. 6 By Natalie Gentry The Springtown Tour of Homes is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 6, and this event will be decidedly different than in years past. Instead of a guided tour of five area houses, this year’s event will take place at the Still Waters Retreat Center at 383 County Road 3672 in Springtown from 5:30-8:30 p.m. The entire retreat center will be decorated for the season. Visitors are encouraged to bring their cameras so that they can capture the fun. Santa will make an appearance at

the gazebo so children can tell him their wish list. The First Baptist Church choir will perform under the large pavilion at 6. While paths will be lit for those who want a leisurely stroll through the resort, hay rides will be available as well. Snacks of all kinds will be onsite including a Christmas staple – roasted chestnuts. Tickets for the tour are $10 apiece and can be purchased at the Chamber of Commerce office, 112 South Main Street. Proceeds from ticket sales benefit the Springtown Legends Museum.

a contract with Hughes for the position. “I was very excited when they selected me,” Hughes said. “I’ve been Mayor for nearly the last eight years and although that was a very rewarding job, I had begun to think about winding it down. “This gives me an opportunity to stay with the city. I love our town; it just keeps me going.” The transition Hughes was enthusiastic about contributing to and serving the city in a new way. “This position will be a change from creating policy,” Hughes said. “Instead I’ll be implementing the vision of the council for the city. “It’s a position I’ve had to fill in as mayor in the past, so I have at least a slight idea of what I’m getting into.” Hughes’ official first day will be Monday, Dec. 8. “Beginning on the eighth I will show Doug the primary things this job requires and how we track things such as banking transactions, service requests, weekly test results, etc,” Krey

said. Hughes will begin his transition from role as mayor to administrator in preparing the agenda for the December meeting. “He will have to prepare himself to become the primary assistant to council during the meeting,” Krey said “There are also several contract entities that assist us with engineering, financial management, planning, grant acquisition and management, and other related issues that we will meet with so they can brief Doug on where we are with their area of expertise,” Hughes said he was looking forward to the various entities and continuing the positive relationship the City had with each. Krey will introduce Hughes to the city employees where they work so they can show him what their function is with the city. “It will be a busy couple of weeks, but the tasks are doable,” Krey said. “I’m excited about getting to work with the city staff as well,” Hughes said. “Spring-

Christmas on the Square arrives Dec. 13 by mark k. campbell At the weekly Springtown Optimist Club meeting, City Secretary Jhanna Bogan told members that the city’s holiday celebration is ready to go. This year’s Christmas on the Square, a city-sponsored event, is slated for Saturday, Dec. 13 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Bogan said JB Perry, Springtown ISD’s director of

fine arts, has coordinated musical and dance acts from the district. In addition, the Klassy Kloggers will return, performing for 45 minutes. A highlight of the festival is the awarding of Bonus Bucks. Those present at 2 when their names are drawn from slips left at local merchants will find themselves richer.

Two lucky winners will receive either $300 or $200. Five additional entrants will pocket $100 each. Bogan said the 2 o’clock time is moved up from the usual 5 with more participation anticipated. New food vendors will also be at the Square, she said, including first-time candy makers and cake bakers. Someone will offer “Texas trash” – or Frito chili pie as most of us know it, she noted. This year’s event will also be more accommodating to children. Bogan said a 25-foot inflatable slide will be about as well as a blown-up 50-foot obstacle course. A petting zoo and pony rides will also entice young ones. A slew of vendors will be set up, many selling franchised products but some offering original creations. Of course, Santa will come to the event. He will be around Three Springtown Middle School students qualified for the All Region Choir: (l-r) from 1 to 3 to talk and listen Thomas Arterbury, bass; Isabel Gabiana, alto 2; and Brent Rose, tenor 2. to children of all ages. Control Early Stage High Blood Pressure Prehypertension is a term used medically for a stage of moderately high blood pressure readings that may lead to a permanently high blood pressure condition. It is important that the blood pressure be reduced to normal readings at this stage to prevent high blood pressure. It is well documented that high blood pressures can increase the risk of a heart attack and stroke. According to the American Heart Association, a normal blood pressure is anything less than a reading of 120/80 mmHg. Prehypertension is defined as a blood pressure in the range of 120-139/ 80-89 mmHg. Prehypertension can be caused by conditions such as cholesterol buildup in the arteries, sleep apnea, kidney disease, or thyroid disease. Certain medications such as birth control pills, decongestants, or pain relievers may increase blood pressure temporarily, as well. The best treatment for prehypertension is eating healthy and regularly exercising. For those diagnosed with hypertension and other chronic conditions such as diabetes or heart disease, a doctor may prescribe medication to reduce the blood pressure. Thiazide diuretics, or water pills, such as furosemide (Lasix) can help by reducing the amount of water in the body. Thiazide diuretics can lower certain electrolytes that are important for the body.

Parker Co. jury denies Azle man’s appeal Two life sentences remain for continuous sexual abuse of a child crime by carla noah stutsman An Azle man sentenced in September 2013 to two life sentences and two 20-year sentences for sexually abusing a young girl over a five-year period were affirmed on appeal Nov. 20. A Parker County jury convicted 34-year-old Charles Wayne Holbrook of continuous sexual abuse of a young child, aggravated sexual assault of a child, and two counts of indecency with a child for offenses that occurred beginning when the victim was five years old and ongoing for five years. Holbrook’s sentences were to be served consecutively. In his appeal, Holbrook contended the continuous sexual abuse offense is unconstitutional and that multiple convictions violate the “double jeopardy” protections afforded under the constitution. The Second Court of Appeals in Fort Worth declined to hold the statute unconstitutional. Regarding the double jeopardy question, the appellate court pointed out that the jury charge specifically limited the jury’s consideration of charges to certain specific time periods or acts, none of which overlapped. “We pursued a number of charges in this case designed to hold this defendant accountable for just a fraction of the times he molested this young victim,” said Assistant District Attorney Jeff Swain, who tried the case with Assistant District Attorney Kathleen Catania. “We were very clear in the jury charge and in closing argument that the jury could only consider certain acts and time periods as meeting the proof re-

quired on particular counts. The appeals court agreed with our position.” During the trial, the victim, just 11 years old at the time, testified that Holbrook repeatedly sexually abused her in wide variety of ways. “This victim was a very courageous little girl,” said Swain. “Not only was she brave enough to disclose what had happened to her for so many years despite Holbrook’s threats to hurt her if she ever told, she got on the witness stand and told a room full of strangers about the awful things he did to her. Her vivid demonstrations of what he did to her made it crystal clear to everyone watching that this girl was telling the truth.” During the trial, a nurse from Millwood Hospital where the girl was hospitalized for posttraumatic stress testified that the girl told her about the sexual abuse in November 2012. A sexual assault nurse examiner from Cook Children’s Hospital, an interviewer from the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services, and a counselor all also testified about the girl’s outcries of abuse to them. The counselor and the girl’s fifth grade teacher also testified about some of her PTS symptoms, which included hiding under a desk, flashbacks, nightmares, and self-harm actions. Asked about the sexual abuse allegation by investigators, Holbrook told them “I’m not going to straight up deny it, but I’m not going to claim it either.” Holbrook admitted he was a regular methamphetamine user and said there were times he just could not recall. “If you asked most men if they had ever had

sexual contact with a 5-year-old, they could and would adamantly deny that had ever happened,” Catania told jurors during closing arguments. “They wouldn’t have to think about whether it had ever happened.” During the punishment portion of trial, prosecutors called a man and a woman, each of whom testified that Holbrook had sexually abused each of them on a number of occasions when they were approximately 10-years-old and Holbrook was 17 or 18 years old. Another punishment witness testified that Holbrook stabbed him during a family confrontation at the Holbrook family home in Azle. “This was the first continuous sexual abuse of a young child case we tried to a Parker County jury since the legislature created the offense a few years ago,” Swain said. “The Court’s ruling will allow us to keep using this very powerful statute that allows juries to consider the entirety of the sexual abuse rather than just focusing on a specific act. The statute also requires sentences to be served without the possibility of parole.” “The defendant can still ask the Court of Criminal Appeals to consider his appeal,” said Assistant District Attorney Eddy Lewallen, who handled the appeal for the prosecution. “However, that court, our State’s highest criminal appeals court, only accepts the cases it wants to

hear. Even if Mr. Holbrook wants them to consider his case, they may choose not to consider it.” Judge Craig Towson presided over the original trial in the 43rd Judicial District in Weatherford.

Season of giving has arrived in Springtown by Natalie Gentry In good times or bad, residents of Springtown never fail to show their generosity to those in need, especially during the Christmas season. This year there is a variety of options when considering how to help the less fortunate: by donating food, clothing, toys, and more to make someone’s holiday brighter.

Angel Trees Choosing a slip from one of the area Angel Trees has become a tradition for many Springtown families and businesses. “Guardian angels” looking for a tree this year have plenty of options. All of the Chamber of

Commerce’s 50 angels on their Senior Angel Tree have been adopted, but there are still child angels in need of necessities. N2N, Outreach of Love Church, and the cities of Reno and Pelican Bay have partnered together with Toys for Tots to supply 355 area children with two toys this Christmas. However N2N still has seven angels in need of warm clothes, while Outreach of Love has five left. Reno is still looking for help for eight children.

SISD asks parents to fill out technology survey The Springtown Independent School district is partnering with BrightBytes – an educational research organization – in order to learn more about students’ school and home technology use for learning. For that reason, the district is urging parents and guardians to take part in the ques-

tionnaire; answers should take approximately five minutes to enter. Participation is essential in helping SISD form a more complete picture of technology use for learning in students’ lives. All responses will remain anonymous to protect families’

privacy. Families with multiple students at multiple schools only need to fill out one survey. More information and links to individual school questionnaires can be found on the District site at wwwspringtownisd.net.

PC Sheriff upgrades computers The Parker County Sheriff’s Office has completely upgraded to new computer systems. The new systems replace a “dated system which was vastly becoming inadequate,” a press release noted. Department areas affected

include the 9-1-1 telecommunications system, the jail, criminal investigations division, patrol, records, and fugitive unit. Captain Mark Arnett said the previous system was more than a decade out of date.

19 Porcupines land on 5-4A All-District list As runners-up in 4-5A, Springtown, as expected, places a slew of athletes on the annual All-District list. One Porcupine took an elite honor, a superlative – a First Team award with the extra gleam of acknowledged exceptional performance. Senior Dillon Springfield was named the 5-4A Offensive Most Valuable Player. A talented receiver, Springfield also served as the Porcupine quarterback, especially early in the season. Talented running back Ryan Snow, who had several multi100-yard games, was a First Team Offense selection. A pair of wide receivers also earned top kudos from 5-4A coaches. Senior Mykeal Cummings took First Team honors as did junior Mateo Herrera. Six Porcupines landed on the First Team Defense roster, half of them seniors and three juniors. Lineman Martine Medina, outside linebacker Clay Walker, and cornerback Ricardo Reynoso were seniors honored. Juniors earning the elite nods were end Robert Dease, inside linebacker Chance Nelson, and safety Fisher Drewry. Two more Porcupines were named to Second Teams, senior offensive guard Gavin Edge-

comb and junior defensive lineman Ben Anderson. Seven other SHS senior athletes were Honorable Mention selections.

Springtown faces string of tough non-district challenges by mark k. campbell The Porcupine basketball schedule is rugged early. Springtown (2-2) faced Peaster, No. 7 in 3A, and 5A Azle with Boyd sandwiched in between. SHS hung with Peaster in the first half of the Nov. 24 clash; the Porcupines trailed 26-23. But the Greyhounds threw in 39 second half points and beat Springtown, 65-53. Kruz Dominguez has stepped up early as SHS’ most prolific scorer. Zack Burton and Jared Green, fellow seniors, added 8 points each. Burton paced SHS in rebounds (5) and assists (5). Triston Brawner hit for 6, Logan McPherson and Dawson Meek scored 5 apiece, and Trent Partain netted 4 points. In a 61-39 victory over Boyd Nov. 25, it was Springtown that had the big second half. SHS led comfortably at the half, 22-10, then out-scored the Yellow Jackets 39-29 in the final two quarters. Dominguez scored 15 to pace the Porcupines. Meek, going 6-of-8 inside, added 13 points. He made it

a double-double with a teamhigh 13 rebounds. The junior also blocked 5 Boyd shots. Ryan Neal scored 7 while a trio of SHS athletes added 5 points each: Raul Medina, Kaleb Chesney, and Partain. Azle, a former bitter rival, came to the Springtown gym Dec. 2. In a spirited game that went back and forth with several lead changes, the Hornets finally secured the contest late and won 66-63. SHS held a 4-point lead, 5046, entering the final period. For Springtown, Dominguez again led, this time with

16 points. He was also the top rebounder for the Porcupines with 9. Meek scored 13 and Partain added 10 in the close clash. Green (8), McPherson (7), and Medina (5) all added to the Porcupine total. SHS shot 48 percent from the floor but only 54 from the free throw line, going 15-of-28. Meek and Partain both blocked a trio of Hornet shots. Springtown begins the first tournament of the season at Jacksboro Thursday, Dec. 4. On Tuesday, Dec. 9, Glen Rose plays here. Then, SHS is away for the remainder of 2014.

Lady Porcupines fight ranked, 5A baskeball rivals by mark k. campbell The Lady Porcupines squared off against some talented foes recently. Springtown (2-5) faced 5A Boswell, undefeated and stateranked Peaster, and former archrival 5A Aledo in a trio of tussles. Boswell defeated the Lady Porcupines 54-46 Nov. 24 at the SHS gym. Brooklyn Dauenhauer poured in 27 points, far and away the highest total by any player; she nailed five 3-pointers. Adrienne Easter scored 11 points, joining Dauenhauer in carrying the bulk of the scoring load. Khristin Mote led the team with 5 rebounds. The next day, the Lady Porcupines traveled to Peaster, No. 14 in 3A. After staying even with the Lady Hounds early – the score stood 11-11 after one quarter – Springtown eventually tumbled 54-41. A trio of SHS athletes reached double digits: Dauenhauer (13),

Easter (10), and Mote (10). Dauenhauer also blocked a Lady Hound shot, stole 6 balls, and had 2 assists, all team highs. With the boys playing Azle on Dec. 2 and the girls hosting former rival Aledo, the parking lot was mighty crowded. The Lady Porcupines fell to the Lady Cats, 56-38. The visitors expanded a first quarter 13-10 lead to 26-16 by the half. As usual, dynamo Dauenhauer paced Springtown, this time with 20 points. Mote (6) and Easter (5) were next. The Lady Porcupines will join the boys in playing at the Jacksboro “Shoot Out” Dec. 4-6. After that series of contests, the Springtown girls do not play at home for the rest of the year. friend has one amazing scrapbook. Yet soon you’ll never be able to have one like it. In his 60’s now, Randy, a music lover, grew up in the prime of rock ‘n’ roll, the late 60’s and all the 70’s and 80’s when music was groovy and ever evolving. It was a great time to be a concertgoer and he was, big time. That’s where his scrapbook comes in. He kept every ticket stub to every concert he ever attended, all safely ensconced in that binder. Hugh Glass’ un-bear-able tale of frontier survival

I

n an article “Wildest & the Toughest” in American Frontiersman, Jim Spencer wrote “In August 1823, near the forks of the Grand River in what is now northwestern South Dakota, veteran mountain man Hugh Glass was hunting to feed the Henry expedition. He surprised a grizzly with two cubs, and the bear attacked before he could get his gun up. She mauled him severely while Glass fought her with his knife. “Glass and fellow hunters John Fitgerald and Jim Bridger (then only 17) finally killed the bear, but Glass was severely wounded – so much so that Major Henry and the rest of the expedition didn’t think he’d pull through. Henry and the party went on with

feats of endurance known to man, Glass set his own leg, wrapped himself in the bear hide his companions had placed over him as a shroud, and began crawling overland toward Fort Kiowa, on the Missouri River near present-day Chamberlain, South Dakota. To help combat gangrene, Glass didn’t disturb the maggots that were eating the dead flesh from the wounds on his back. “Glass survived mostly on wild berries and roots. On one occasion he was able to drive two wolves away from a downed bison calf, and feast on the meat. “Reaching the Cheyenne River, he fashioned a crude raft and floated downstream. He met some friendly Indians who sewed a bear hide to his

Finally, six full weeks after beginning his epic crawl, Hugh Glass reached Fort Kiowa. “He recovered fully from his horrible wounds and went right back to being a mountain man, eventually confronting and then forgiving the two men who had deserted him. Glass survived in the wilderness for more than another decade, successfully dodging both Indians and Griz, until his luck finally ran out. He and two other trappers were killed by Arikara Indians in the winter of 1833.” Laurie Moseley is an author, archeologist and historian who lives in Springtown. The critical cold shoulder? Penguins is good fun Animated movies aren’t automatic moneymakers (unless you’re Pixar). Dreamworks is 20 years old now and the studio has had its share of hits, too, with just a few misses. About the film Penguins of Madagascar is Dreamworks’ 30th animated movie. Only two have underperformed and just one has flat-out lost money. That dud was The Road to El Dorado (2000, Movie Man No. 333, a 6). It took in just $76.4 million (internationally) with a $95 million budget. The other one that didn’t just go lights out was Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas (2003; that early July, the Movie Man chose Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines [#515, 6]), but it made back its $60 million budget with $80.8 million. Of the 30 Dreamworks movies, the Movie Man has missed reviewing eight of them: Antz – Oct. 1998 (the Movie Man chose What Dreams May Come [MM #254, 6]) Spirit: Legend of the Cimarron – May 2002 (the Movie Man chose Insomnia [MM #458, 7 and Best of Year, the only time a 7 has been Best of Year since the inception of the Movie Man in 1993]) Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas Over the Hedge – May 2006 (sometimes a film slips through the cracks and this is one, a great animated movie; instead, the Movie Man saw The Da Vinci Code [MM #667, 5]) Flushed Away – Nov. 2006 (the Movie Man chose Borat! [MM #690, 7]) Bee Movie – Nov. 2007 (the Movie Man chose American Gangster [MM #743, 7]) Rise of the Guardians – Nov. 2012 (the Movie Man chose Lincoln [MM #1010, 8]) Turbo – July 2013 (the Movie Man chose Pacific Rim [MM #1044, 6])

And like the Marvel Universe and Disney, Dreamworks has a slew of animated movies lined up until 2019. Even though a few are originals – coming attractions for Home (due March 27, 2015) are already showing and a bevy of 9-year-old boys will rejoice to know that a Captain Underpants film is set for Jan. 13, 2017 – the usual slate of sequels are queued: Kung Fu Panda 3 (Dec. 23, 2015), How to Train Your Dragon 3 (June 2017), The Croods 2 (Dec. 2017), Madagascar 4 (May 2018), and even Puss in Boots 2: Nine Lives & 40 Thieves (Dec. 2018). So, animation fans like the Movie Man can rest assured there’s more good stuff coming…perhaps forever. The plot Skipper (voiced by Tom McGrath), Kowalski (Chris Miller), and Rico (Conrad Vernon) are not like other penguins; they refuse to just march around cutely and be filmed by documentary crews. They break out of line to save a wayward egg that ends up being the final piece to the quartet, Private (Christopher Knights). After a series of exciting adventures (including breaking into Fort Knox for their be-

What works There are a lot of funny visuals in Penguins – several are encased in the Fort Knox incident – and plenty of wacky wordplay: “Drew! Barry! More!” The animation is great and, while the Movie Man didn’t see the movie in 3-D, there were

What doesn’t work The ending is not great. Not every character gets much screen time; Skipper hogs everything (he is the leader). Sometimes the movie is too fast-paced for its own good – there’s almost too much to take in and that can be frustrating.

Movie Man loved Cheesy Dibbles snacks), the foursome discover Dr. Octavius Brine (he’s an octopus) aka “Dave” (John Malkovich) who has a means of taking over the world by capturing all the darling penguins in the world and changing them into monsters. Before the penguins can take action, the North Wind, a crackerjack secret organization, shows up comprised of a wolf, Classified (Benedict Cumberbatch); a seal, Short Fuse (Ken Jeong); an owl, Eva (Annet Mahendru); and a polar bear, Corporal (Peter Stromare). When the first attempt to stop Dave fails, it appears that the North Wind (motto: “No one breaks the Wind”) abandons

the penguins’ efforts to save a captured Private. But, when the chips are down, the Wind returns and Private displays some day-saving skills.

Best scene The movie takes off quickly with the sequence where Skipper, Rico, and Kowalski save the egg that contains Private. It’s a mile-a-minute scene, jammed with jokes and visuals gags – including a documentary crew filming (and instigating) the action, led by real-life documentarian Werner Herzog. The sequence captures the zest of the rest of the movie: good stuff for kids and for adults.

The rating This is a mild PG. Some penguins turn into monsters and Dave the octopus can be a bit scary, but that’s about it. Summing up The Movie Man is surprised at some of the critical disdain/ nonchalance directed toward Penguins. It’s way funnier than most animated movies; at times, it’s laugh out loud funny. Next up The Movie Man will hunt down Wild or The Imitation Game, likely, before the usual end-of-year rush of higher profile films arrive.

Unhappy holidays

ANGEL BAND

by mark k. campbell “You will grieve.” Brian Brinkmann knows firsthand what loss is – and how surviving holidays can be tough. Brinkmann’s 17-year-old daughter Sarah was killed in a car crash Nov. 17, 2009. As expected, he struggled with the loss until he eventually found GriefShare. A single dad at the time and well involved in ministry, Brinkmann’s world eroded. “I thought church was a place where I could hide my emotions,” he said. But it wasn’t it. Brinkmann, speaking to the Springtown Optimist Club, ventured to North Side Baptist Church in Weatherford and discovered a program called GriefShare. He said he had the typical male response initially to the tragedy: “I don’t need this. I just need some books to read. Stiff upper lip and all that.” But he attended the Christ-centered, Biblebased class. “The first three weeks, I cried,” Brinkmann said. He completed the 13-week cycle. Then he took another. And another. Brinkmann saw the practical program worked. He became a substitute facilitator then a full-time one. “Now, I run it,” he To find a local church c h u c kled, that offers the GriefShare noting that program, visit the web site he conducts www.griefshare.org. GriefShare helps those who have lost loved ones bevy of churches in the area. The structure of the program appealed to Brinkmann – who is a master electrician, holds a Master of Divinity degree, an AA and BA in Theology, and is currently enrolled at Tarleton State University in Stephenville en route to a PhD in clinical psychology. “Adults have grief patterns,” he said. Brian Brinkmann Brinkmann GriefShare Facilitator said he prefers to refer to GriefShare as “an ER for people who have suffered, an ER for grief.” He said, “We try to get people from mourning to joy, from where you are to where you need to be.” The holidays make grieving even tougher: “This time of year is especially tough – and not just if the loss was recent. “But the first holiday season is very hard.” Brinkmann said his personal experience was that he would be OK by the time the holidays rolled around a second time. That was not the case. Even today, he said he sets up a Christmas tree but does not decorate it because “that was Sarah’s thing.” He said his wife and son take care of it. GriefShare gives people that leeway. “It gives you permission to not do things,” Brinkmann said. Because holidays are so tradition-bound, the hurt can be deep. “You learn to make new traditions,” he said. Brinkmann has seen the program benefit many. “You don’t have to walk the journey alone,” he said. “You will grieve. But you don’t have to do it alone.” The next GriefShare cycle at North Side Baptist Church begins Saturday, Jan. 10 from 10 a.m. to noon.

You don’t have to walk the journey alone.

Texas Health offers low-dose CT scanner

Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Azle now offers the 64-slice computed tomography Dennis Glen Brooks scanner with adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction (ASIR). The new scanner delivers high-speed, high-quality images with up to 40 percent less radiation, representing an important advancement in CT scan diagnostics for the hospital. This next generation of diagnostic imaging technology scans nearly 40 percent faster Matthew Chaise McDonald than earlier generations, cutting patients’ radiation exposure nearly in half. “The technology enables us to significantly reduce radiation levels for our patients and still achieve quality images,” said Carrie Shirley, director of radiology at Texas Health Azle. “This is important for patients who may need multiple Michael Sherman Scott imaging tests, such as cancer

patients and women of childbearing age,” Shirley said. With earlier generation CT technology, radiologists could deliver lower doses of radiation, but reducing the dosage too much would result in a lower quality image.
