Businessman dies in shooting incident Former Chamber President Bettis known for supporting Azle by carla noah stutsman An Azle man was shot and killed Sunday evening, Dec. 21 during an altercation between two men. Former Azle Area Chamber of Commerce President Brad Bettis was shot several times. Azle police were dispatched to a disturbance at 620 South Stewart Street at 5:54 p.m. According to Interim Police Chief Darrell West, the initial 911 call reported a verbal altercation between Benny Aulvry Rogers and Bettis. That disturbance escalated, West
said, to a point where Rogers produced a handgun and shot Bettis multiple times. Bettis, 40 and an Azle native, was pronounced dead at the scene. Due to multiple gunshot wounds, his death has been ruled a homicide by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office. Rogers, 47, the owner of the property where the incident occurred, surrendered to Azle police voluntarily, according to West, and was taken into custody without incident. He was escorted to the Azle Po-
lice Department for questioning at the time of the incident and has been fully cooperative with law enforcement officials, West said. “There have been no formal charges filed at this time,” West said. “Bettis and Rogers may have known each other and the argument that took place was domestic in nature.” The investigation is still ongoing and will be presented to the Parker County Grand Jury upon its completion, West added. In addition to Azle PD detectives and officers, Tarrant Regional Water District

Patrols out in force this New Year’s If you’re planning to celebrate the New Year with a little bubbly – or any other alcoholic beverage – make sure you have a plan to get home safely. The Texas Department of Transportation reminds motorists that law enforcement will be out in force on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day in an effort to reduce crashes and discourage drunk driving. And that means around here, too. TxDOT’s annual Holiday Impaired Driving Campaign began Dec. 1 and runs through New Year’s Day to promote the importance of planning for a sober ride. The campaign coincides with an increase in law enforcement patrols aimed at reducing the number of impaired driving crashes in Texas during the holiday season. Numerous law enforcement agencies throughout the state will also implement no-refusal initiatives. Drivers arrested for DWI can face jail time and up to $17,000 in court costs and legal fees. The legal limit for intoxication in Texas is .08 blood or breath alcohol concentration.
Lake Patrol officers, Azle Fire Marshal Kenny Wilson, and the Texas Rangers assisted in the investigation at the scene. Bettis grew up in Azle and graduated from AHS in 1993. After college, he oversaw operations at First Independent Insurance, an affiliate of First Bank and later, Pinnacle Bank, from 2000 to 2010. Bettis was active in the community as well as in the rodeo community. He is the father of two young children. See obituary elsewhere in this publication.
LaJunta volunteer firefighter Matthew Thomas tends to the driver who lost control of a pickup Monday, Dec. 29, on Flat Rock Road near Dwayne Drive. The man was transported to an area hospital with unknown injuries. An investigation is underway to determine why and how he lost control of the vehicle, which traveled across the roadway to the opposite bar ditch, struck a culvert, a telephone pole, and a metal fence before it came to a stop. The year in review, Part 1: by mark k. campbell The earthquakes that rattled the Azle area in late 2013 hung around in 2014 – and brought with it a swarm of activists. Fires, criminals, retiring leadership, and HGTV were just a few of the happenings in the first half of 2014. January The main topic around town as the New Year arrived was earthquakes. On Jan. 2, the Texas Railroad Commission (RRC) sent representatives to address local quake concerns. A panel comprised of Austinites and local governmental representation heard plenty from the raucous crowd – despite being told there would be no “Q & A.” On Jan. 13, Azle High School was the site of a near media-frenzy as Metroplex news outlets descended upon the auditorium to hear activists whip some residents into a frenzy. Complete with a guy wearing a gas mask and holding a sign that said “Ban Activists poured into Azle to encourage local resiFracking Now!!!,” local concerned dents to head to Austin to protest the earthquake folks heard groups urging people to swarm in early 2014. sign up for a bus ride to Austin to get attention for the quakes. Sure enough, people – including an Elvis impersonator and some preteens – later spoke with RRC representatives in Austin about their tremor concerns. Eventually, the earthquakes stopped. On Jan. 23, a man with a gun “hearing voices” on West Columbia Drive kept Azle police at bay. With help from the Parker County Special Operations Group, Shaylor Alan Lambert was eventually forcefully removed from the house and taken into custody. After Joe Floyd Coffee was arrested for causing a disturbance at a convenience store, he began confessing to several other crimes – including an aggravated robbery on Valentine’s Day, a car theft and even an arson. Pelican Bay police solved eight burglaries in the ‘Bay and Reno, arresting five individuals. After accepting de-annexation petitions in January, the Reno City Council rejected them all in February. The Red Solo Cup Barbecue Bash raised around $50,000 for the Azle Education Foundation.
February The University Interscholastic League’s biennial realignment put Azle in the same district with two Wichita Falls schools, three from Saginaw, Brewer, and Denton, resuming the arch rivalry with Boswell, the Take the Lake football game. March With no one filing against incumbents, both Azle and Lakeside cancelled scheduled May elections. That saved Azle $10,000 and Lakeside $4,000. The Azle Drumline competed in Houston March 8 and won the regional competition, edging Houston Cy-Fair by one-half point. PLEASE SEE 2014, PAGE 3A.

These are the biggest sports stories in 2014 by mark k. campbell Another year passes and leaves another year of memorable sports activity around Azle. Some feats that just missed the cut were several athletes signing Division I scholarships; the AHS volleyball team reaching the postseason; the cross country teams both competing at regional in Lubbock – with the boys posting the fastest time in AHS history – and the fast start by the 2014-15 Lady Hornet hoops squad that was state-ranked for a while. But here are the top 10 sports stories from 2014: 10. Hornets compete in 7-on-7 football tournament. It was scorching hot July 1112 at College Station where gridiron athletes in shorts and sleeveless shirts squared off. Azle had qualified right off the bat and reached the state tourney ready to go. AHS beat Houston Lamar and Port Neches-Groves in pool play to advance to the championship bracket. There, Katy ended the Hornets’s action-packed outing. The success in College Station was a precursor to a stunning fall football season on the horizon. 9. Azle wrestlers shine. After sending 15 athletes to the regional tournament, nine more moved on to the ultimate UIL event – state. Two Azle wrestlers were regional champs, Jesse Grubbs and Lauren Gilbert.
team had not reached the postseason since 2005. But in 2014, that streak ended. Under Coach Mitzi Marquart, AHS reached the postseason with 21 victories. The bi-district foe was Boswell and the Lady Hornets beat the Lady Pioneers 45-41 at Northwest High School. Bos drew to within two points with 10 seconds left, but the winners of District 6-4A were sent home by Azle. The memorable season ended in the Area round against a 27win Fort Worth Trimble Tech squad. With much of that AHS team now seasoned, this year’s group of Lady Hornets bolted out to a solid start. 6. Soccer squads reach playoffs with boys, district champs, winning first playoff match ever. The Hornets won district then made history by winning bi-district against Boswell. At a chilly Saginaw Chisholm Trail pitch, Azle beat Bos 2-1, scoring in the first extra period. Dylan Tritton had booted a goal in earlier and his ground pass to Josa Gomez and his score in the extra period put Azle up. Then the Hornets protected that advantage for 19 more minutes for the first-ever playoff victory. The best season ever for the boys ended with a 2-0 loss to Wichita Falls at Mineral Wells.
The huge Garland crowd at the state wrestling tournament saw Lady Hornet Jesse Grubbs become the first-ever multiple gold medal winner for AHS at a state event. Photo by Mark K. Campbell Coach Gary Rushing’s Crusaders went 12-0 and claimed Azle Christian’s third football championship in five years – and ACS was in those other two title tilts.
AHS finished district with a sterling 13-1 mark, winning the championship. Azle posted 27 wins before the postseason began. Then came a successful playoff run. The Lady Hornets smashed Boswell 13-0 and 9-2 in bidistrict. Next came 10-1 and 8-2 wins over Joshua in the Area round. That pitted Azle against former Coach Vera Ortega’s Brewer Lady Bears. AHS won the best-of-three 2 to 1 to reach the Sweet Sixteen. A trip west was next, to Abilene where Canyon awaited. Azle got yet another sweep and upped its win total to 35. That set up a monster clash against Aledo ranked No. 6 with Azle No. 8. There, at the Chisholm Trail diamond, the Lady Cats ended the memorable Lady Hornet season. Two athletes were All-State: pitcher Makenzi Harris and shortstop Bailee Carter. Every Lady Hornet starter will return for the 2015 season. 2. Wrestler Jesse Grubbs repeats as state champion. Grubbs had won a gold medal at the state wrestling meet as a junior. Now, back at the state meet
– in Garland – she was in position to do something no Azle High School athlete had ever done...win two gold medals at state. Grubbs was simply the best athlete at the event; she was voted the coveted MOW: Most Outstanding Wrestler. And she earned that honor by dominating her foes. She beat rivals from San Antonio Brooks Academy then Huntsville. On Valentine’s Day, she beat an Amarillo foe 3-0 to claim her slot at the top of the bracket. There awaited a familiar opponent, Clarc Walker of Frisco Heritage. The veteran Grubbs won 5-1 and had done something historic. To win the top medal, Grubbs defeated the second, third, and fourth place finishers in her 185-pound class – a tough chore. 1. Azle’s best football team ever advances deep into the playoffs. The “football Bible” Dave Campbell’s Texas Football did not think Azle would even advance out of 5-5A. And when district play opened with a loss at Boswell, it looked like that might be true. But the opposite occurred. Azle began ripping off victories, winning six straight 5-5A
games and the district championship. That first title in 20 years came in overtime at Wichita Falls Rider 28-21 in the season finale. The Hornets had finished the regular season 9-1 and were within striking distance of the most wins ever by an Azle squad. In bi-district, that record of 10 was tied with a 73-24 romping of Fort Worth Dunbar at Chisholm Trail High School. Then the 2014 team claimed the record, thumping the Burleson Elks 45-20 at Birdville’s stadium. A 28-point third quarter smoked the Elks. Now this year’s team had reached rarefied playoff air done only once before, in 1996. Azle ventured to distant Odessa to face another team having a super season, Canutillo, near El Paso. The game was close and played before a bevy of Hornet fans. The Eagles edged the Hornets 17-10 as an Azle rally died with an unsuccessful onside kick late. Still, the 2014 Hornets won more games than any other team and tied the mark for the deepest playoff penetration by an AHS football team. That makes them the No. 1 story of 2014.
The 2014 Lady Hornet softball team reached the Elite Eight; only two other Azle squads had ever advanced that far. Photo by Mark K. Campbell Unfortunately, Gilbert would get injured in a vehicle accident and not be able to participate at state. But Grubbs would...big time. Three other AHS athletes medaled – Ruby Ariosa and Bernadette Duhan finished fourth while Colten Clearwater took fifth. With just three Lady Hornets wrestling, Azle tied for fifth in the girls team results out of 68 schools. Had Gilbert been uninjured, certainly greater heights awaited. 8. UIL realignment brings Boswell back. While speculation was rampant – as usual – about how the University Interscholastic League would redraw districts (there were rumors of Abilene and even San Angelo), the biennial redistribution of schools didn’t change much for Azle. Now 5A, the new 5-5A kept familiar foes like the two Wichita Falls schools – Rider and Old High – and even Denton High. (Guyer moved on.) Three nearby Saginaw schools joined the district. Including Boswell which reignited the annual super rivalry game, Take the Lake. 7. Lady Hornet hoops reach the postseason. The Azle girls basketball
The girls, whose coach Trent Davis would resign in the spring, stood 6-0-1 at one point in 124A play – including a win over Aledo in the first match played on the new Hornet Field turf. In the postseason, the Lady Hornets drew powerful Denton Guyer and lost 4-0. 5. Azle Christian School wins state in basketball and football. In hoops, the Crusaders, led by former AHS coach Robert Hale, won game No. 17 – which was for the state championship. With just six players, ACS rallied to win 39-37 over a Granbury Cornerstone team that had given Azle Christian two of its three losses. Freshman Jeremiah Carlson hit two free throws to draw the Crusaders even, then, with 12 seconds left, Joey Rosamond’s bucket teased around the rim before falling in and securing the state title. The six-man Crusader football team was simply a juggernaut. Again the foe was Granbury Cornerstone, but this time the gridiron athletes scored far more points than the hardwood teams. ACS won state with a stunning 114 points while Granbury scored 64 at state.
Josh Crawford was the game MVP; he rushed for 419 yards and scored eight touchdowns. In 12 games, ACS mercyruled foes 10 times. 4. Azle pole vaulter Sarah Hall wins silver at state. Lady Hornet Hall headed to Austin with a real shot at a substantial medal. And she got one, the silver. All through the spring, the senior mowed down rivals. After competing at the Texas Relays – on the same UT-Austin track where she would win her silver medal – Hall won district at Little Elm then the regional event at Abilene’s McMurry University. In Austin, Hall cleared 12 feet, 9 inches on her final attempt to keep the battle for the gold going. After sailing over 13-0, neither she nor Mont Belvieu Barbers Hill’s Emily Gunderson could clear 13-3. By virtue of fewer misses, Gunderson won the gold. Hall just missed one shot at 13-3. 3. Softball team reaches Elite Eight. The Lady Hornet softball squad put together a season to remember in 2014. Azle won often early and Azle’s football team won 11 games, something no other Hornet gridiron squad had soon was state-ranked. ever done before. Photo courtesy Richard Spraggens

6A Go Cowboys! (It seems to mean so much to so many) www.azlenews.net
I
am living proof that you can overcome an addiction. I’m Mark and I was once a die-hard Cowboys fan. Hi, Mark! I spent 33 years cheering and hair-pulling as the antics of a group of similarly dressed men all adorned with stars on their helmets dictated my Sundays (and sometimes Mondays). I constantly bought Dallas Cowboys stuff: toboggans (ski caps to you Yankees); team posters at McDonald’s: cheap Hutch helmets; socks; t-shirts; jerseys (I loved Calvin Hill); bumper stickers; drinking glasses – you name it, I bought it. On game day, my entire family crowded around the TV, whooping and hollering. I was joyous when the Pokes won and depressed when they lost. I hated the teams that always man-
aged to beat Dallas back in my childhood: the Cleveland Browns, the St. Louis Cardinals, and, especially, the Washington Redskins. All I thought about was the Cowboys. I even considered moving my wedding date because on Aug. 9, 1975, Dallas played an exhibition game. Truly, I was addicted to the Dallas Cowboys. Then came Feb. 25, 1989. Jerry Jones bought the Cowboys and the first thing the guy from Arkansas – Arkansas! – did was fire Coach Tom Landry. The greatest football coach that ever lived, the one who gave my family such joy for decades, was given no chance for any sort of public farewell. It was just: “Don’t go away mad, just go away.” Well, at age 32, I was mad and I
went away all right, from my greatest passion, from my family-bonding experience – forever. The most devoted Dallas fan that ever lived turned off the TV and ON YOUR never looked MARK back. Oh, at first, Mark K. Campbell there were hordes of us making that proclamation. “I’ll never root for the Cowboys again!” And what fun it was to see Dallas lose so many games in those early Jones years.
But then came the wild Super Bowl successes of the early- and mid-1990’s and suddenly there were far fewer of us anti-Cowboys, Long Live Tom Landry! faction. The bandwagon got loaded down as time (and winning) healed a lot of wounds. But not mine. Oh, eventually I quit hating the Cowboys; my angry passion melted away, too. I reached my current position on the team: I just don’t care. If I’m jogging on a Sunday afternoon, I’ll listen to the game. I’ll flip over to the Cowboys for my postchurch nap or plop down and watch it when visiting friends. Because I’m a big radio listener to The Ticket, I am as up-to-date as ever on Cowboy activities. My life just isn’t dominated by such information.
My late dad never quit rooting for his beloved Dallas squad. He always said he cheered for the uniform, not the players or behind the scenes folks. I just could/can not do that. Yet, I hope the Cowboys beat the Lions in this week’s playoff game. I remember what it was like to be enthralled and jacked up with anticipation for big games. If Dallas wins, lots of folks around here will be happy. That’s a good thing. Maybe the Pokes will even win the Super Bowl. (Even though I think the Cowboys party ends in Green Bay Jan. 11.) Just don’t expect to see any sort of celebratory sticker on my pickup – unless it’s of Landry’s classic fedora. Mark K. Campbell is the News editor and, for some reason, his Rangers’ fervor has waned, too.

Newspaper competitors Hearst and Pulitzer both produced yellow journalism
R
eaders may recall a column a couple of weeks ago about how various phrases and expressions originated. The term “yellow journalism” for sensationalized and exaggerated news was attributed mainly to William Randolph Hearst of the New York Journal. I recently found a short article about Hearst that former Texas Christian University professor Dr. Ben Proctor wrote. It was taken from his book, William Randolph Hearst: The Early Years 1863-1910. I saw Dr. Proctor and his wife Phoebe over nearly a 40-year period at annual conventions of the Texas State Historical Association and the Western History Association. Dr. Proctor passed away a couple of years ago. Proctor called Hearst a “towering figure” in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He wrote that Hearst believed he was responsible for the Spanish American War. Hearst called it “the Journal's war” in his newspapers and helped shape public opinion

to urge President William McKinley to intervene in the conflict between Spain and Cuba to help the latter overthrow the strict control of Spain. Born April 29, 1863 in San Francisco, Hearst was the only son of George Hearst. The poorly educated father had great luck in the Western mines, starting with lead in Missouri. Later he invested in the four most productive mines of the era – the Comstock Lode in Nevada, the Ontario silver mine in Utah, the Homestake in South Dakota and the Anaconda in Butte, Montana. Gold, silver and copper made him wealthy. His only son William benefitted. He could have had any job he wanted in his father's empire, managing a ranch, a mine, but he chose to own his father's struggling newspaper, The San Francisco Examiner. At age 23 in 1887 he took over. Even before moving to New York to challenge a newspaper genius, Joseph Pulitzer, on his own turf, the young Hearst began urging his reporters to make the news exciting. He wanted

Dispatch. In 1883 he bought a failing newspaper, the New York World. To get more readers and advertisements, he stressed what Hearst also did, scandal, human interest, sensationalism. In New York Hearst hired some of Pulitzer's top people away from him, including Richard F. Outcault, a newspaper artist. Outcault created a comic strip called Hogan's Alley in the 1890s while working for Pulitzer. In it was a background character, a kid. By 1896 Outcaualt worked for Hearst. Eventually the kid with the yellow blob of color appeared in both newspapers with both editors giving the public a full dose of the new-style journalism. The comic strip wasn't really funny but a satire of the lifestyles of the newlyrich railroad and mining barons. The comic strip and the Yellow Kid became so famous that pictures of him were seen on all sorts of products: chewing gum, cigarettes, sheet music, match books, dolls, alcohol, etc. Historians say he was the “first fictional character to have his own extensive

The hysteria of the lead-up to the war came weeks later, but what survived was the term “yellow journalism” from all the sensational stories that led to the war. Hearst eventually owned an empire consisting of 30 newspapers, a host of magazines and a radio network. He died in 1951. In the 21st century the Hearst family corporation is one of the largest media companies in the U.S. with magazines, broadcasting and feature syndicates. Pulitzer, who died in 1911, left money to Columbia University, which established the annual Pulitzer Prize in 1917 to honor journalistic and artistic excellence. He also founded the Columbia School of Journalism with a bequest. Retired history professor J’Nell Pate of Azle has authored several books, many of which are on sale in the lobby of the Azle News.

Letters to the Editor Remembering Brad Bettis, an Azle advocate This week, the Azle area lost someone who was not only a tremendous asset for our community but a wonderful person. We are all deeply saddened by our loss. Bradley Bettis has an unrivaled passion for his hometown and had worked often hand-inhand with his community and his family to grow and improve it. He and his passion will be sorely missed. In his former role as president of the Azle Area Chamber of Commerce, Brad played a crucial role in many of the developments in Azle in past years. His ability to connect with other community leaders was invaluable and he played an undeniable role in helping establish a more cohesive community and solidarity among many community organizations during his time with the Chamber. Having the pleasure of personally working with Brad in his role as an insurance agent, I can attest that I never met anyone who spoke negatively of Brad. His personality was one that expressed friendliness and concern for his clients and business relationships. The members, board, and staff of the Chamber express and send their condolences to the Bettis and Lynn families.

Additionally, we were able to provide gifts to more than 300 children. All of this was made possible because of the enormous generosity of many individuals, groups, and organizations. This holiday season has been a difficult time for me because I was diagnosed with cancer and have been going through chemotherapy. I worried about organizing everything to be sure that everyone who needed food or whose children needed gifts were provided for. However, I didn’t need to worry as so many wonderful volunteers stepped forward to make sure all of the needs were met. The thank you list is long. First: I want to thank those people who have worked day in, day out to collect and distribute food for the Mission House. The hours and hours they have spent have kept the Mission House running smoothly. You are a wonderful group of people and I deeply appreciate all that you do. Also: We would not be able to provide food without the generous donations that are given by businesses and individuals. The merchandise, checks, and cash donations given to us allows us to feed those who are in need and are greatly appreciated. Additional thanks must go to all who provided presents for the children on the Angel Trees that were placed in local businesses. Your kindness allowed many children – who may have gone without – to have presents this year. Two organizations have again helped. Wild Child Cycles raised money with a motorcycle rally. This year’s event was bigger and better than ever with our local police officers leading the cycles. Last but not least our thanks goes to Spokes4Hope. They have donated bicycles to children throughout Texas and to many children in Azle – 50. The community support is appreciated and is an example of why Azle is a great place to live. Thank you.
Castle Hills Mission House has had a wonderful holiday season because we were able to provide food for more than 300 families (more than 1,000 people, including some who are homeless) both at Thanksgiv- ing and Christmas.
2014: A big year for job creation
T
he passing year has been a banner one for job creation in Texas, according to government assess-
ments. Drawing on figures calculated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Texas Workforce Commission on Dec. 19 reported employers added 34,800 seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs in November, for a total of 441,200 jobs added since last year. “This broke the state’s previous record set in October, as the state’s annual job growth expanded to a new high for a fourth month in a row,” according to an agency news release, which also said, “even more Texans were employed in November as the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 4.9 percent from 5.1 percent in October, and down from 6.1 percent a year ago.” “The Texas economy continued its record-breaking expansion, providing job opportunities across a wide range of industries,” said Texas Workforce Commission Chair Andres Alcantar. “Texas employers set another record by adding 441,200 jobs over the year and we must continue to focus our efforts on expanding our state’s skilled workforce to meet employer needs in high-demand industries.” Also as reported, seven of 11 major industries added jobs over the month, including 13,500 more jobs in Professional and Business Services, 7,200
jobs in Education and Health Services and 6,000 jobs in Leisure and Hospitality. Notably, the STATE Midland CAPITAL MetroHIGHLIGHTS politan Statistical Area Ed Sterling had the lowest November unemployment rate in the state at 2.3 percent; the Odessa MSA had the second-lowest at 2.8 percent; and the Amarillo MSA placed third-lowest at 3.3 percent.

2014 were “either equal to or lower than the best levels ever measured in most areas of the state.” In making the announcement, the agency pointed out: The year 2011 had high ozone readings in many areas of the state because extreme drought, wildfires in Texas and elsewhere in the United States, few cloudy or rainy days and unusually quiet winds combined to form “conditions favorable for ozone formation.” “Better air quality has been achieved through targeted emission reduction strategies. In Houston, industry has cut NOx (ozone components nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide) production over 80 percent in the last 10 years. Tougher rules on compressor emissions in North and East Texas have helped, as well as tougher emissions rules on electricity generating plants. Fleet turnover of both passenger cars and heavy-duty trucks also played a substantial role.” “Lower emissions from newer trucks and cars and new diesel fuel standards also reduce ozone precursor emissions.” Gas production has expanded rapidly near the San Antonio and Dallas-Fort Worth areas, but TCEQ scientific studies “have not to date seen significant impacts of oil and gas activities on ozone in those metropolitan areas.”

‘Cramming’ pact reached The Office of the Texas Attorney General on Dec. 19 announced the State of Texas, 49 states and the District of Columbia resolved an investigation into wireless carrier T-Mobile USA Inc. for its role in the practice of unlawful cell phone “cramming” – the unlawful practice of placing unauthorized third-party charges on mobile phone accounts. T-Mobile agreed to settle states’ claims for a total nationwide monetary value of at least $90 million. “As part of this legal action,” the Texas AG’s Office said, “T-Mobile has agreed to no longer bill for third-party Premium Short Message Services (PSMS) — which led to the unlawful cramming — and will be isolating other thirdparty billing charges on customer bills.” Cramming, as explained in the announcement, “occurs when third-party content providers enroll and bill mobile phone customers for their services – such as ringtones and recurring text messages containing trivia or horoscopes – without the customers’ knowledge or consent.”
Perry renews proclamation Gov. Rick Perry on Dec. 22 announced the renewal of the emergency disaster proclamation he originally signed in July 2011, certifying that exceptional drought conditions posed a threat of imminent disaster in specified counties in Texas. Even with more than welcome rains in many regions this month, the proclamation applies to 94 of the state’s 254 counties. In contrast, the proclamation applied to 92 specified counties in the month of November. Azle News Wednesday, December 31, 2014
Into the Woods only occasionally bewitching A while back, we analyzed the difficulty of bringing a popular stage production to the big screen. Plenty of adaptations fail – Dreamgirls, Nine (the latter directed by Rob Marshall who made Into the Woods)– while others made the trip and then some – Cabaret, Chicago (the latter also by Marshall). Into the Woods has been a colossal success since its debut in 1986 and its Broadway arrival in the fall of 1987. (Unfortunately for Into the Woods, it came out in the same awards season as the juggernaut The Phantom of the Opera.) Before we determine Into the Woods’ cinematic release, let’s look back on 2014. Best and Worst The year was a decent one for movies – not great, but OK. Here’s the best and worst of 2014: Best 1. Edge of Tomorrow (8) 2. Gone Girl (8) 3. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (8) 4. The Lego Movie (8) 5. Godzilla (7) 6. Interstellar (7) 7. The Equalizer (7) 8. X-Men Days of Future Past (7) 9. Guardians of the Galaxy (7) 10. Captain America: Winter Soldier (7) Honorable mention Fury (8) 300: Rise of an Empire (7) Mr. Peabody and Sherman (7) Worst 1. Transformers: Age of Extinction (3) 2. Neighbors (3) 3. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (4) 4. Muppets Most Wanted (4) 5. Maleficent (4) Dishonorable mention Purge: Anarchy (4) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (5) The Expendables 3 (5) Guilty pleasures: Dracula Untold (6); Hercules (6)
Most offbeat: Grand Hotel Budapest (6) Rated too highly: Fury Rated too lowly: Guardians of the Galaxy Biggest surprise: Edge of Tomorrow Biggest disappointment: Interstellar (yet on Best list) Best scene: Quicksilver speeding around in X-Men Days of Future Past to Jim Croce’s “Time in a Bottle” The plot A baker (James Corden) and his wife (Emily Blunt) want to have a child, but a witch (Meryl Streep) put a curse on Corden’s father and mother – a curse that extends to Corden who can have no child. Unless, that is, the couple can in three days fetch four items for Streep: a red hood, a white cow, a golden shoe, and blond hair. Corden and Blunt wander into the dark woods and come upon (at varying times) Red Riding Hood, Jack of beanstalk fame, Rapunzel, and Cinderella. Each has what the couple needs but attaining the items proves to be tricky. While the four fairy tale stories play out, the characters weave in and out of the woods and the couple’s quest. Then, when it looks like everything is hunky-dory, a way-

Blunt runs into Pine while alone in the woods and the prince makes a move on her. Blunt’s rendition of “Any Moment” is funny as she is confounded by her response to royal interest, and it’s the best song in the movie. (That is, of course, unless one of the nine numbers cut from the play might be better.)

Hello my name is Fancy and I believe I’m a 1 year old Pit Bull Terrier mix. I’ve spent most of my life in the Azle Shelter and I’d really like a forever home for the New Year. I am a sweet, quiet, shy girl who gets along with everybody. I will sit or lay in a corner or under a chair until I get comfortable with my new surroundings and family. I do require a fenced in yard to play in when I’m out and I love to play with most dog toys.
VAL
Hello to you! My name is Val and I am about 10 months old. I am a sweet boy who is reserved and relaxed. I typically take a few minutes to feel comfortable in a new situation or with a new person, but then my sweet personality starts to shine through. If you are interested in adopting me, stop by and meet me in the shelter’s “get to know me” room. I look forward to seeing you soon!
