Water scam targets local businesses BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN Officials with the city of Azle want to warn residents and businesses alike about a scam that has – so far – victimized at least two Azle fast food franchises. The Azle Police Department is investigating both scams. The first occurred at Whataburger Saturday, Sept. 12; the second happened at a different fast food franchise Tuesday, Sept. 15. That franchisee preferred not to be identified. In the scam, a caller identifies as a representative of the city of Azle Code Enforcement department, and claims the business’ water bill is past due.

The caller says water service will be shut off to the business if the bill is not paid within 30 minutes, and gives instructions, including an account number, where money should be wired. Azle Police Chief Rick Pippins says the scam contains several “red flags,” but businesses are understandably shaken when faced with the possibility of having their water shut off. “For any restaurant, water is absolutely critical – they can’t operate without water,” Pippins said. “The scammers know this, and that’s what they’re counting on to make the scam PLEASE SEE APD, PAGE 3A.

Second mosquito tests positive for West Nile City fogs Ash Creek area again BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN After Tarrant County Public Health (TCPH) confirmed a second mosquito sample tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV), the city of Azle again fogged the area of Ash Creek Park, Twilight Drive and Dusk Avenue. The mosquito was collected in a trap in Ash Creek Park. It’s the second infected specimen collected in Azle – and in Ash Creek Park – this season. On Aug. 5, a mosquito sample also collected there tested positive for WNV, prompting the city to fog the area. Using a product called Envion 3030, the area was fogged a second time Sept. 12 between 9:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. Sept. 13. Residents were advised to avoid direct exposure by staying indoors during fogging and to close their windows

during fogging operations to prevent the product from entering their homes. Envion is designed for application as an Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) or thermal aerosol to control adult mosquitoes and flies in areas such as but not limited to: residential areas, industrial areas, commercial areas, urban areas, parks, campgrounds, woodlands, athletic fields, golf courses, playgrounds, recreational areas, overgrown waste areas, roadsides, and other areas where adult mosquitoes and flies may be found. When outdoors where mosquitoes might be present, the city of Azle recommends using an insect repellent with DEET. Follow all labeling and safety precautions when using an insect repellent. Contact the Park Superintendent at Elvis and thousands of others agreed that the 2015 Sting Fling was a hit. Old favorites like the Wiener (817) 444-7127 if you have questions Dog Derby and Color Fling 5K returned and the new steak cookoff and carnival were popular too. SEE PAGE 7A FOR STORY, MORE PHOTOS! A Moment of Silence...Kinda

BY NATALIE GENTRY Reno City Hall was filled Monday, Sept. 14 as the city council addressed recent gunfire incidents and explored the possibility of creating ordinances to regulate the discharge of firearms within the city limits. Arnold Wilson, of Azle, began the discussion. “I’d like to propose maybe going along with Parker County’s firearm rules,” he said. “People are coming out here and buying houses that have nice backyards and then think they can just start shooting like crazy. “We’ve got to do something about it.” While there is a Parker County ordinance which requires a minimum of 10 acres in order for shooting to take place inside a subdivision, the city of Reno has no ordinance of any kind related to the discharge of a firearm. Biennial Levis and Lace coming Oct. 3 Every other year in the fall, Azleites “cowboy up” for an evening of western-themed dining, dancing, and fun. And giving. It’s time again – on Saturday, Oct. 3 – for Levis and Lace, co-chaired this year by Lisa Segelquist and Gwen Gibbons. The event – featuring dinner by Reata Restaurant and entertainment by the Sonny Burgess – returns to the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame, 128 East Exchange Ave., in the Fort Worth Stockyards. In recent years, the biennial Levis and Lace fundraiser has

generated more than $130,000 in support of community outreach initiatives for Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Azle. Proceeds from past Levis and Lace events have helped fund the hospital’s Walk-in Care Clinic, which provides services to patients without appointments and regardless of their ability to pay, as well as the Healthy Education Lifestyle Program and the Healthy Eating Initiative, which support a community garden program to increase the accessibility of fresh produce at an affordable

cost. Proceeds from this year’s event will go toward the purchase of a Digital Breast Tomosynthesis machine. This new technology for screening and diagnostic mammography helps identify abnormalities easier in dense breast tissue than with 2D mammog-

raphy. “Raising money for a great cause and having fun doing it is what the people of Azle are famous for!” Segelquist said, adding that she and Gibbons are honored to chair this year’s event. “We’re changing up the gala a bit this year and hoping to appeal to everyone’s fun

side.” Gibbons said, “If two-steppin’ isn’t for you, you can play blackjack, have your “butt sketched,” and try winning any of our great raffle items. “This Western Chic event is

sure to delight everyone’s cowboy spirit.” For more information: visit: Texashealth.org/levisandlace or contact Sarah Richardson at 682-236-5202 or sarahrichardson@texashealth.org.

Explanatory Statements for the November 3, 2015 Constitutional Amendment Election

exemption, and prohibiting the enactment of a law that imposes a transfer tax on a transaction that conveys fee simple title to real property.”

Proposition Number 1 (SJR 1) SJR 1 - Current law provides an exemption of $15,000 from the ad valorem taxation for public school purposes of a residence homestead. The proposed amendment would increase this exemption to $25,000, starting in the tax year beginning January 1, 2015. In order to reflect the increased exemption on the homestead of a person 65 years of age or older or a disabled person, the proposed amendment would provide a reduction to the current limitation on the total amount of ad valorem taxes. The proposed amendment would protect school districts from all or part of the revenue loss by authorizing an appropriation of funds according to formulas set by the legislature. In addition, the proposed amendment would authorize the legislature to prohibit a political subdivision from reducing or repealing a homestead exemption adopted by the political subdivision. Finally, the proposed amendment would prohibit the imposition of a tax on the conveyance of real property, but would not prohibit the imposition of a business tax measured by business activity, a tax on the production of minerals, a tax on the issuance of title insurance, or a change in the rate of a tax in existence on January 1, 2016. The proposed amendment will appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment increasing the amount of the residence homestead exemption from ad valorem taxation for public school purposes from $15,000 to $25,000, providing for a reduction of the limitation on the total amount of ad valorem taxes that may be imposed for those purposes on the homestead of an elderly or disabled person to reflect the increased exemption amount, authorizing the legislature to prohibit a political subdivision that has adopted an optional residence homestead exemption from ad valorem taxation from reducing the amount of or repealing the

Proposition Number 2 (HJR 75) HJR 75 - In 2011, voters approved a constitutional amendment to allow a surviving spouse of a 100 percent or totally disabled veteran an exemption from ad valorem taxation from all or part of the market value on the disabled veteran’s residence homestead, as long as the surviving spouse had not remarried. The amendment did not apply to surviving spouses of veterans who died before 2011. This amendment would extend the exemption in such cases. The proposed amendment would apply only to ad valorem taxes imposed for a tax year beginning on or after January 1, 2016. The proposed amendment would appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment authorizing the legislature to provide for an exemption from ad valorem taxation of all or part of the market value of the residence homestead of the surviving spouse of a 100 percent or totally disabled veteran who died before the law authorizing a residence homestead exemption for such a veteran took effect.” Proposition Number 3 (SJR 52) SJR 52 proposes a constitutional amendment to repeal the requirement for the Comptroller of Public Accounts, the Commissioner of the General Land Office, the Attorney General, and any other officers elected statewide to reside in Austin, Texas, the state capital. Under current law, these statewide elected officers are required to reside in the capital of the State of Texas while in office. This amendment would not apply to the residency requirement for the Governor. The proposed amendment will appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment repealing the requirement that state officers elected by voters statewide reside in the state capital.”

Proposition Number 4 (HJR 73) HJR 73 proposes a constitutional amendment that would grant the legislature the authority to pass statutes to allow a professional sports team charitable foundation to conduct charitable raffles under the terms and conditions imposed by general law. The laws passed under this authority may provide that the professional sports team charitable foundation may use proceeds from such charitable raffles to pay reasonable advertising, promotional, and administrative expenses. Any law enacted by this provision only applies to entities defined as professional sports team charitable foundations on January 1, 2016. Additionally, any law enacted by this provision may only allow charitable raffles to be conducted at games hosted at the home venue of the professional sports team associated with a professional sports team charitable foundation. The proposed amendment would appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment authorizing the legislature to permit professional sports team charitable foundations to conduct charitable raffles.” Proposition Number 5 (SJR 17) SJR 17 proposes a constitutional amendment which would increase from 5,000 to 7,500 the maximum total population threshold of a county that is allowed to construct and maintain private roads as long as the county imposes a reasonable charge for the work. The proposed amendment will appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment to authorize counties with a population of 7,500 or less to perform private road construction and maintenance.” Proposition Number 6 (SJR 22) SJR 22 proposes a constitutional amendment that would add the right to hunt, fish and harvest wildlife, including by use of traditional methods, in the Bill of Rights of the Texas Constitution. This right would be subject to laws and regulations intended to conserve

and manage wildlife and to preserve the future of hunting and fishing. The proposed amendment would establish hunting and fishing as the preferred method of managing and controlling wildlife in Texas. The proposed amendment is not intended to affect any law or provision related to trespass, property rights or eminent domain, and would not prevent the legislature from authorizing a municipality to regulate the discharge of a firearm in a populated area in the interest of safety. The proposed amendment will appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment recognizing the right of the people to hunt, fish, and harvest wildlife subject to laws that promote wildlife conservation.” Proposition Number 7 (SJR 5) SJR 5 proposes a constitutional amendment to dedicate a portion of revenues from (1) the state sales and use tax, and (2) the tax imposed on the sale, use, or rental of a motor vehicle, to the State Highway Fund (SHF). Under current law, these funds would be deposited to the General Revenue Fund. Money deposited to the SHF is intended to be used only to construct, maintain, or acquire rights-of-way for public roadways other than toll roads; or to repay certain transportation-related debt. The proposed amendment would appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment dedicating certain sales and use tax revenue and motor vehicle sales, use, and rental tax revenue to the state highway fund to provide funding for nontolled roads and the reduction of certain transportation-related debt.”

Reno Ele. kids herded inside after nearby gunfire Robert Orrill, of Azle, in celebration of the holiday unaware of the deadly consequences of the action. Orrill later turned himself in and was charged with manslaughter.

■ RENO, FROM PAGE ONE.

Mayor Lynda Stokes noted that according to state law, it’s illegal to shoot across roadways or property lines. “State law overrides everything else, so these laws are applicable here,” Stokes said. Briar-Reno Fire Chief Shannon Smithers agreed with much of what was said. “I do think there needs to be some sort of provision, but I don't know that acreage is really a good factor for that,” he said. “The reason being is that, what happens if I live on a rectangular piece of property and I decide to shoot across the narrow end? “Personally, I think there should be provisions that contain berms,” Smithers continued. “We inspect everything else around here, so why not inspect that too? Require $10 and have somebody come out and look at it. “At the end of the day safety is placed upon the person shooting,” he explained. “We can have all the provisions put in place, but it’s all about who is pointing that gun.” Smithers echoed Stokes’ sentiments. “I don’t think taking peoples’ guns away is what is needed, or their rights to shoot,” he said. “But I don't think acreage is the only factor to consider; I think there needs to be further provisions put in place.” Safety in the school There have been reports of gunfire heard near Reno Elementary school, and the mayor said that the noise has scared the teachers and the kids. “And with all the school

Springtown ISD superintendent Mike Kelley addressed the Reno City Council Monday, Sept. 14 regarding concerns about the discharge of firearms near Reno Elementary during school hours. Photo by Natalie Gentry shootings I believe we can all understand that,” Stokes said. “We have to find a way to do this safely.” Council Member Eric Hunter invited Springtown Independent School District superintendent Mike Kelley to speak. “The council has a very, very difficult task,” Kelley said. “We have to balance the rights of the citizens and recognize one of the attractions of living in a community like Reno. “At the same time we have to make sure that our children are protected.” Kelley noted that no one with the school has indicated that they believe shots are being fired at the school or that bullets are necessarily flying across the property.

“But there is that concern that this could happen, he said. “We’ve had to call students inside a number of times during recess as shots were being fired out of concern for their safety. “While it’s a relative certainty that none of those bullets are coming across the property – even if it’s a 99.99 percent certainty – it’s not perfectly safe,” Kelley continued. “So we bring those kids in, which disrupts the learning environment – a minor concern here.” Kelley said the big question is how to balance the desire to live the lifestyle citizens have chosen out here while also protecting the community’s most valuable resource – the children.

“It’s a difficult task,” Kelley said. “I want to clarify that we’ve not accused anybody of anything illegal or immoral, but there is a concern which I believe everyone will agree is legitimate.” He also said this is an issue that communities are facing across the country. An innate danger To illustrate the possibilities of accidents, Stokes referenced the July 4, 1991 death of Azle teen Tyler Cannon. According to an article in the July 11 issue of The Azle News, Cannon was at Stinger Filed watching fireworks when he was struck by a stray bullet. The projectile had been fired into the air half a mile away by

Livestock in jeopardy Joyce Wilson went on to explain the situation she and her husband have experienced recently. “I think everyone needs to know that until a couple of weeks ago we had live ammunition repeatedly coming over our property line into our fields and zipping past us in our yard,” she said. “We now have a dead ram.” Reno City Administrator and Director of Public Safety Joe Polino added that there is an active police investigation into criminality that could possibly have occurred regarding the Wilsons’ experiences. “I can only speak in a very limited manner because this is an active investigation,” he said. “But we’re not just looking into it; we’re putting together any probable cause that we might have to possibly file a criminal charge against anyone responsible for firing across property lines and killing the livestock that Mrs. Wilson is referring to.” Stokes noted that livestock have suffered from possible reckless discharge of firearms before. “This is not the first time we’ve had livestock shot,” Stokes said. “In 1997 I had a horse shot. It didn’t kill her but it crippled her for the rest of her life.” Stokes says she is in contact

with the National Rifle Association as well as area gun ranges to gather information about berm and other requirements that may be possible regulation options. “This is a dialogue that is long overdue,” Polino said. “There is, without a doubt, some reckless use of firearms in this area that does pose a danger to some of our residents.” “I think that commencing this dialogue we will get to where we need to be. “It’s very important that everyone know that this has nothing to do with a ban on firearms,” Polino continued. “It just has to do with utilizing them in a safe manner that doesn’t pose a danger to anyone.” Stokes noted that in addition to berms and acreage requirements, she has also been looking into time requirements that take hunting seasons, school hours, and church services into account. The vocal majority in the room were in favor of some ordinances that regulate the shooting. Stokes summed up the issue. “Everyone in this country has rights, and we all are enthusiastic supporters of the second amendment,” she said. “But my rights end when they step on yours. “That’s what many people don’t get,” Stokes continued. “No one has the right to do something that infringes on someone else’s rights. That’s where it all stops. “As a community, we need to figure this out together and this dialogue has allowed us to know what [the citizens of Reno] want.”

Sting Fling cooks in new location BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN

Perfect festival weather greeted Sting Fling 2015 Saturday, Sept. 12, and event organizers say they couldn’t be more pleased with the turnout for the annual fundraiser for the Azle Area Chamber of Commerce. Sting Fling staples like the 5K Color Run, Sting Fling Parade, petting zoo, children’s area and the ever-popular Weiner Dog Derby drew their usual large crowds. New additions, such as the carnival at 404 Main Place, the SCA-sanctioned Sting Fling Steak Cookoff and a concert by Monkey Love at the Central Park amphitheater, were well-received, as well. The return of the festival to its Main Street roots brought thousands to the heart of Azle’s central business district where vendors lined up to show festival-goers their wares. Steak Cookoff a big hit John Lemley is a barbecue guy, but he loves a good steak. The frequent competitor at BBQ cookoffs did some research and organized the inaugural Sting Fling Steak Cookoff, sanctioned by the Steak Cookoff Association. Highlighted by a burger competition as well as a steak competition, the cookoff saw 40 entries in its first outing. “We had 15 entries in the burger competition and 25 in the steak competition,” Lemley said. “These guys and girls are serious about their red meat, but they have a lot of fun, too.” Standard Meat Company in Dallas provided the steaks for the competition, and cookers agreed they were great quality pieces of meat. Winners of the burger competition won cash prizes, and the first place winner received an entry into the World Food Championships. Winners included: 1st place: Jason Clark, JB7 Cookers 2nd place: Robert Lew 3rd place: Braun Cyr, Team Rage Winners of the steak competition received cash prizes, with first place receiving $1,000 plus an entry into the World Steak Championship at Billy Bob’s Texas Oct. 24. 10A Full frontal nudity! www.azlenews.net

(Now that I have your attention...)

T

he human body is either a marvel to behold or, if you’ve been to Cancun, a flat-out horror. There are not a lot of statues of blubbery Twinkie-infested people; they are always muscle-ripped Greek gods – sometimes literally. Like at Wichita Falls’ Memorial Stadium where there – in full frontal glory – is some dude holding a torch aloft. Memorial Stadium goes way back in my family. My late dad used to tell stories of seeing the Dallas Cowboys scrimmage there in the early 1960’s, trying to drum up interest in the fledgling NFL team. He always said the Wichita Falls High School Coyotes out-drew the Pokes by a mile. I don’t know if the statue was there then. If so, even though the Sixties were ramping up, those prudish Eisenhower era old-timers would have had a hard time getting over the fact that a giant nude guy was at the end of the football field. I spent several childhood evenings at Memorial Stadium; I can’t recall the statue then, but, if we saw it, I’m pretty sure we giggled a lot.

This is a bona fide nekkid male. It’s not a slick Olympic Ken doll; this guy is posed in anatomically correct pride. I can’t imagine anyone approving of ON YOUR something like that on school MARK property today. Mark K. Campbell Right now, we’re more freaked out by every little thing far more than anyone from the Happy Days of the Cleavers ever were. There is a plaque on the statue. The top part is written in Greek and, since I dropped Spanish four times in my scholastic career, I have zero chance of reading it in any other original language either. Fortunately, there is an English translation. Unfortunately, it’s almost impossible to read. It looks like a weather-worn Civil War tombstone. Thanks to modern technology – blowing up a picture – some words can be discerned. Then you Google the few you can decipher – the key

one being that it was written by Pindar (which would make a great name for a rapper, yo) – and here’s what you get: Ephemeral creatures that we are! Who shall say what each man is, and is not? For man is but the shadow of a dream. Yet if the gods bestow on him but a gleam of their own radiance, bright flame surrounds him and his life is sweet. It’s hard to imagine Tom Landry or a football coach today addressing his players in this manner before a game: “Get out there and be ephemeral!” The Bride thought it would be a good idea for football to be played nude, that there’d be fewer injuries (!). Which, of course, is loco. As a former high school football player – Second Team All-District Defensive Back, 1973 – I’ve been in enough piles of grunting, sweating teenage boys on the gridiron and have had my face pressed against some unsettling areas of other guys’ anatomy that the last thing you’d want is to play football nude. It’s one of the few times when a concussion would be good. Which would make you ephemeral indeed. Mark K. Campbell is the News editor and was also Honorable Mention Offensive End.

Legislature created position of Texas State Historian

T

hree Texas historians, whom I know personally from attending history conventions, have been named since the Texas Legislature created the position of Texas State Historian in 2005. Texas is not unique in that it has various items labeled “state” this or “state” that. For example, the state bird is the mockingbird, the state tree is the pecan, the state flower, bluebonnet, etc. We even have the position of “Poet Laureate of Texas,” an honor that is bestowed on someone different every year. Years ago, I heard a lady who was Poet Laureate at the time read a beautiful poem at a TCU luncheon for alumni. This spring, I was sitting with her at a dinner table at a writers' convention, and she said she always gets to write the title of “Poet Laureate of Texas” after her name once she earned it. Well, a few years ago, someone decided we needed a “Texas State Historian.” Obviously, the organization from which to select a person for such an honor would be the Texas State

THE

Historical Association, the “oldest learned society in Texas,” having been established in 1896. When I first joined the history faculty at the Northeast campus of Tarrant County Junior College (as it was called then in 1968), I learned of the TSHA because several of the faculty were members. Of course, I joined and attended conventions nearly every year from then on and still do. The TSHA leadership, especially Larry McNeill, worked hard a decade ago to get the Texas Legislature to create the position of “Texas State Historian,” which they approved in 2005. The honorary position is a twoyear term with no pay. Duties are the encouraging of the teaching of Texas history, consulting with the governor and state officials as their liaison on Texas history, and lecturing all over the state. It wasn't required, but sort of understood, that the person so honored would be selected from the membership of the TSHA. The first Texas State Historian named was Dr. Frank de la Teja, a professor of history at Texas State University in San Marcos and a former president of the TSHA. It took a while to

make the selection and install him in office, so his two-year term was 20072009. Being the first person in the position, he had the opportunity to carve out the role and set precedents for the job. Of PAGES FROM course, he had do this with WESTERN to no funds for HISTORY travel or anyand while J’Nell L. Pate thing carrying on his full duties as a professor. He did what he could. Frank and I served on a committee in the summer of 2010 as consultants to the Bob Bullock Texas State Museum about an exhibit on the livestock industry in Texas. The second Texas State Historian, Dr. Light Cummins, of Austin College, served two terms, 2009-2012. Dr. Cummins had the same problem as Dr. De la Teja of still being employed

full time by academia. He traveled and made speeches when he could, the college helping out some. (It is an honor if the State Historian of Texas is one of your professors!) During one of his two terms, I heard him speak to a large audience at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History about his latest book, Emily Austin of Texas. My other contact with Light, other than always saying “Hello” at TSHA conventions, was when he and his wife, other passengers, and me, rode the same van from the airport to the hotel in El Paso in 2011 when the TSHA met there. I had a bum knee at the time, and it was difficult to climb up into the van. Light assisted me. The third Texas State Historian to serve so far is Dr. Bill O’Neal, who taught at Panola College, located in Carthage, in Panola County, bordering Louisiana. Dr. O’Neal is retired and has more time to travel the state to promote Texas history than the two previous honorees. Such a small school as Panola is so thrilled to have their long-time professor as Texas State Historian, that they have let him keep his school office and have agreed

to fund his travels throughout the state. Consequently, Bill, a very enthusiastic person anyway, is having the time of his life promoting Texas history. He goes on the radio in little towns he visits, makes talks at schools, appears at various events, etc. I first met him years ago because he, like me, is a member of the West Texas Historical Association, a smaller group than TSHA where it is easier to know everyone. I attend all their conventions too. Just concluding a term as its president, Bill made a speech at our last WTHA convention, detailing a lot of his activities. He now is in his second term as Texas State Historian. All three of these academic historians have written books, but Dr. O’Neal is the most prolific; he is the author of over 40 books, mostly on Western history topics. Creating the position of State Historian of Texas – even if they didn't fund it – is one of the smartest things the Texas Legislature has done recently. Retired history professor J’Nell Pate of Azle has authored several books, many of which are on sale in the lobby of the Azle News.

Neighbors agree to work on trade, energy projects

G

ov. Greg Abbott traveled to Mexico last week to meet with President Enrique Peña Nieto and other officials in Mexico City. On Sept. 8, the governor’s office announced an agreement between the Texas Department of Transportation and the Ministry of Communications and Transportation of the United Mexican States “to promote and increase bilateral collaboration on future border infrastructure projects.” Also announced was the creation of an energy task force “to foster economic growth on both sides of the border by finding new and innovative energy solutions.” Abbott said the agreements signify Texas’ and Mexico’s “intent to expand highway infrastructure, encourage economic development and facilitate bilateral trade on both sides of the border.” The governor’s office quoted Claudia Ruiz Massieu, Mexico’s secretary of foreign affairs, who said “such a deep and diverse relationship as the one Mexico and Texas share flourishes when there is communication and mutual understanding. Governor Abbott´s visit reflects the will to take that path.” On Sept. 6, the governor’s office announced that in 2014, Texas exported more than $100 billion in machinery, technology and other commodities to Mexico, about 35 percent of the state's total exports. And, it was said, those exports “sustain tens of thousands of small- and medium-sized businesses in Texas and more than 1.1 million jobs.”

Rachel,

the wife of Jacob (whose name God changed to Israel in Genesis 32) was giving birth to her second son and was in distress in the process. Genesis 35:1718 says, “When she was in severe labor the midwife said to her, ‘Do not fear, for now you have another son.’ It came about as her soul was departing (for she died), that she named him Ben-oni; but his father called him Benjamin.” This is a sad story that could have been even sadder, but for the choice of a wise and sensitive father. With her dying breath, Rachel names her son Ben-oni: son of my sorrow. Imagine how the boy’s life might have been being reminded every day of the sorrow he brought to his dying mother. But his father called him Benjamin: son of my right hand. Now, instead of “little sorrow bringer,” this boy was known as “Daddy’s right hand man.” I can’t help but believe Perry suspends campaign that set the course of his life. Hegar said that since taking office on Jan. 2 he has “emphasized efforts to increase transparency and accountability at the state’s chief financial agency, while improving customer service. The town hall tour is intended to facilitate those efforts and help keep Texans informed of economic issues in their own backyards.” Sales tax revenue is down Comptroller Hegar on Sept. 10 reported state sales tax revenue in August was $2.6 billion, down 0.4 percent compared to August 2014. “The slight decline in sales tax revenue was due to reduced receipts from oil and gas-related sectors, offset by growth from other sectors,” Hegar explained. Higher collections from retail trade, restaurants and services indicated continued growth in consumer spending, while receipts from con-

struction also grew, he added. Cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts will receive $638.1 million in local sales tax allocations for September, an increase of 1.7 percent compared to September 2014. Texas’ fiscal year ended Aug. 31. Hegar said “All Funds” revenue for the year finished at $109.5 billion, slightly less than the $109.7 billion projected in the comptroller’s Biennial Revenue Estimate. Also, sales tax revenue for the year was 0.6 percent below estimate, at $28.9 billion. The forecast was $29.07 billion. Cucumber warning issued Texas Department of State Health Services on Sept. 4 warned that recalled cucumbers may be contaminated with Salmonella. Certain cucumbers that entered the market in various states including Texas were sold under the brand name “Limited Edition.” “This type of cucumber is dark green, typically seven to 10 inches long and usually sold in bulk bins and may not be easily identified by label or sticker. People should talk to their retailer or supplier about whether their cucumbers were part of the recall,” the health department suggested. Azle knocks out Cleburne in home opener BY MARK K. CAMPBELL The home opening football game made everybody happy. The packed house was electric and so were the Hornets; Azle (2-1) jolted Cleburne (03) 38-7. Before the game, emergency personnel were honored on the field on Sept. 11 – and that was after youth football, cheer, and drill teams paraded around the track. “It was exciting,” Coach Devon Dorris said. “It was a great atmosphere.” In a prior loss to Waxahachie, the Hornets got off to a slow start and could not recover. Not this time. On a windy, warm evening, AHS got an early field goal from Alex Quevedo. The Hornet defense forced a short punt into the wind and QB Nick Davis immediately hit Aric Brazell for a 10-yard TD. Azle led 10-0 then expanded that to 17-0 less than a minute into the second period when a wide open Brazell caught a pass and out-ran everyone down the AHS sidelines for another score. Brazell would catch two passes, both for touchdowns. Cleburne got on the board for the only time when the wind

caused a short Azle punt. But the Yellow Jackets would not score again. Meanwhile, the Hornets came out in the second half and put the game away. A 17-7 lead grew to an unreachable 31-7 with a pair of third quarter scores. Dorris said Cleburne spent the first half trying to stop the run, so AHS passed. In the second half, the Jackets focused on the Azle passing attack and that set free Hornet runners. Chase Smith scored a pair of TDs on a 10-yard run then the fourth quarter game capper, a 6-yard burst. In between Clayton Wilkinson sped 31 yards about halfway through the third period to end Cleburne hopes. “We made adjustments at halftime,” Dorris said of Cleburne’s defensive strategy. Another plus was that “we played physical,” Dorris noted. Azle has reached the off week. “We’ll recuperate, get our nicks and bumps healed,” the coach said. After a week working on fundamentals, AHS will focus on 3-0 Boswell in the annual Take Ka-boom! Hornet defensive back Trey Ramos (5) proves why 5-5A coaches think so highly of him. Boys 4th, girls 5th at Brewer race It was a tad sticky at the annual Brewer Bear Invitational Sept. 11 in White Settlement. Still, many Azle cross country racers turned in stellar efforts and got a good look at district rivals.

In the boys’ varsity race, Julian Hernandez turned it on and finished second overall in 17 minutes, 23 seconds over the 3-mile course. Still, Coach Keith Boenisch said his squad has yet to reach

its potential. “When we get all seven guys running well together, we will be dominant in both varsity and JV,” he said. In two JV races, both AHS boys teams finished third.

The varsity girls took fifth behind Abigail Kortotrax who finished 12th in 22:19. All squads will compete in Cleburne Sept. 18 before getting a look at the district meet site in Wichita Falls Sept. 26.

Duo qualify in elite event

ACS falls 72-27

5-5A Opener

Azle wrestling twosome advance Two veteran Azle High School wrestlers earned exclusive berths after shining in a tough tournament. Hayden Buchanan and Skylar Russell finished in the top four at qualifying tourney and earned a place on the bracket at the Super 32 Preseason Nationals in Greensboro, North Caro-

lina Sept. 30-Oct. 1. “This is probably one of the two toughest high school tournaments in the nation,” AHS Coach Chris Allen said. Buchanan finished second and Russell was fourth in the Houston event. Allen said the Super 32 tournament has a history of turning

out Division I All-Americans “over and over” again. “It is hard to get into and even tougher to place,” he said. “There are college coaches all over the place here, and it’s a great way to get your name and skills out on the national level.” Allen said six Azle athletes competed in the qualifier.

JV, 9th face different foes The AHS junior varsity and freshman football teams tangled with different rivals in recent outings. The JV (1-2) rebounded from a loss to Waxahachie to gain its first victory of the season in Stephenville. In the Waxahachie clash, Artavian Harrell got the TD. Later, Charles Cullen returned an Indian conversion effort into 2 Azle points 103 yards later. Harvell and QB Gavin Coffee led the AHS JV in a 12-2 win over Stephenville in a game played at Tarleton State

University. Both ran for touchdowns. The Hornet defense allowed zero points; the Jackets scored on a special teams miscue which resulted in a safety. Pacing the defense were Justin White and Cullen, coaches said. The 9th Green (2-1) built a 30-7 halftime lead and went on to beat Granbury on the road, 44-30. Bradley Crawford scored 2 first quarter TDs on runs of 47 and 27 yards. Cody Akers threw 2 TD pass-

es, to Dan Ruelas for 38 yards and Marshall Sampley for 8. Kolton Van Gelder ran in for a TD from the 33 and Payton Ladner scored from the 7. The offensive line shone, coaches said: E.J. Michelli, David Carrillo, and Koby Adams as well as H-back Tyler Jenson. The 9th White (1-2) got a 4-yard TD run from Noah Vurich but lost to Granbury, 20-6. Standouts included linemen Jason Johnson, Monte Holliman, and Jordan Soto. Corbin Atkinson and Holliman recovered fumbles.

Megan Bagwell (1) and the Lady Hornets opened district play at home with a loss to Wichita Falls Rider. After traveling to Old High in Wichita Falls Sept. 15, Azle will head to White Settlement to face Brewer on Sept. 18. That’s followed by a pair of home matches – against Chisholm Trail Sept. 22 and Boswell Sept. 25. Photo by Mark K. Campbell

Azle Christian School fell to 1-2 after a 72-27 loss to Dallas Inspired Vision. Coach Gary Rushing said the game was close at halftime – ACS trailed just 26-20 – before the game got away. Movie Man

Azle News Wednesday, September 16, 2015

M. Night Shyamalan returns for a nice Visit It must be tricky to come out of the cinematic blocks like a shot, sustain momentum for a while, and then seemingly flame out. That’s what happened to M. Night Shyamalan. About the film While Shyamalan had a moderate success as a writer – he penned Stuart Little (1999, Movie Man No. 318, 6) – he soared to fame via the third movie he directed, The Sixth Sense (1999, which the Movie Man famously did not see, choosing that week instead Mystery Men [MM #299, 5].) It’s easy to forget the hubbub The Sixth Sense caused; it made almost $300 million in America and was required viewing. (The Movie Man did see it later but didn’t review it – the rule since 1992 is one movie per week [which was broken only once, at Christmastime 2012 when some readers got a Year in Review and others received This Is 40 (MM #1014, 4)].) Shyamalan had to follow up a huge hit, and he tried with Unbreakable (2000, MM #378, 8). It’s his best movie but only made $95 million. (Unbreakable recently has been enjoying a cultish upswing in popularity.) But a big success came next: Signs (2002, MM #468, 8); it made $228 million despite a goofy ending (an echo of which appears in The Visit). His penchant for “twist endings” pushed it a little too far for some with The Village – but not the Movie Man (2004, MM #571, 7). However, then things got kinda wonky for Shyamalan. Four very weak movies in a row damaged his reputation: Lady in the Water (2006), The Happening (2008), The Last Airbender (2010, MM #884, 3), and After Earth (2013). Still, Shyamalan pushed forward. Even though his TV event, limited series Wayward Pines was bumped back a year, it was pretty good.

Now here’s The Visit. Shyamalan funded it himself on a micro $5 million dollar budget. Making such a small picture allowed him to keep total control. It’s been well received. Other movies are in the director’s chute, including a couple with stars Bruce Willis and Joaquin Phoenix, actors from previous Shyamalan hits. While those remain to be seen, The Visit is actually a pretty good scary movie. Maybe the director is on the way back. The plot A now-30something mom (Kathryn Hahn) left her parents as a teen in a huff years before and has not seen them since. Now, her mom and dad are reaching out to bury the hatchet – plus they want to see their two grandchildren, teens Becca (Olivia DeJonge) and Tyler (Ed Oxenbould). Reluctantly, Hahn puts the kids on a train to visit the grandparents DeJonge and Oxenbould have also never seen. All along the way, DeJonge is filming a “documentary” about the experience to help Hahn handle her still unexpressed fallout feeling about her folks. An old couple meets the kids at the train station, Nana (Deanna Dunagan) and Pop Pop (Peter McRobbie).

The mom’s reveal that shocks the children has some clout, even if you have deduced what’s going on. The film is the right length at 94 minutes, and it’s a nice combo of scary/funny for most of it – even the found footage gimmick isn’t too distracting.

Mesothelioma may occur 30 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. Many workers were exposed from the 1940s through the 1970s. Industrial and construction workers, along with their families (second hand exposure) are among those at risk for mesothelioma, lung cancer or gastro cancer (throat, stomach, colon). However, now recognize the benefits of idea of keeping a vehicle that perhaps due to the rising cost keeping their vehicles for the has surpassed the 100,000-mile of new vehicles, many drivers long haul. According to Polk research, many of today’s drivers are keeping their cars for longer (817)220-1229 periods of time, with the average age of all cars on the road being 11 years. In October of 2011, Joe LoCicero saw his 1990 Honda Accord crack the one million mile mark, a feat Auto Repair, Radiator Repair, Mufflers & Diagnostics for which Honda awarded him a new Accord and a parade in his hometown. the financial impact of such a decision. In a recent survey and study from Consumer Reports, the savings of keeping a vehicle for 225,000 miles over 15 years versus purchasing and financing an identical model every five years equated to a savings of more than the original purchase price of the car. A person can potentially save $20,000 or more on a properly maintained older car. Keeping a car running beyond 200,000 miles was once pure luck. the task. But improvements in rust prevention, lubricants and engine technology have made it easier for today’s vehicles to last longer. But as durable and reliable as today’s cars may be, AAA notes the importance of regular maintenance. Knowing your car is one of the first ways to make sure it gets the service it needs. Over time, many drivers start to identify warning signs, such as abnormal noises or if the vehicle simply feels off when out on the road. Finding a mechanic that can

be trusted is an important step for drivers who want to keep their vehicles going strong for years to come. A driver is more likely to bring the car in for service if the price is right and he or she does not feel like any costly and unnecessary repairs are being recommended. Building a good relationship with a mechanic can keep a car working longer. Newer model year cars can be taken to dealership mechanics, who may have a better working knowledge of newer electronics and the subtleties of specific models of cars. The owner’s manual should not be something that simply takes up space inside the glove compartment. It is worthy of a read. Understanding the recommended maintenance schedule and what other steps can be taken to prolong the life of the car can keep it on the road longer. Keeping the tires inflated to the proper pressure and using the right type of gasoline are the types of information that can be found in the manual. Drivers can save a lot of money on unnecessary repairs if they follow these guidelines. Many people are keeping their vehicles longer, reaching mile marks that were once unheard of. Investing in a car that has a good track record of longevity and then properly maintaining the vehicle are necessary to getting the most out of your vehicle investment.
