Azle grad shoots winning NFL photo Pennington shot No. 1 in pro football contest BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN Azle native Tom Pennington is pretty good with a camera. So good, in fact, that he’s been named the winner of the 47th Annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Photo Contest. Pennington’s photo titled “Take That” was selected by a panel of judges as the Photograph of the Year for the 2014 NFL season. The image depicts Baltimore Ravens defensive back Brynden Trawick in midair about to intercept a pass intended for Dallas Cowboys receiver Dwayne Harris. The winning image was captured on Aug. 16, 2014 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. Pennington will be offi cially honored at the Enshrinees GameDay Roundtable, part of the 2015 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival that centers on the Class of 2015. Jerome Bettis, Tim Brown, Charles Haley, Bill Polian, Junior Seau, Will Shields, Mick Tingelhoff, and Ron Wolf will be enshrined into the Hall of Fame at 8 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 8. Vandalism coincides with 10th anniversary of brothers’ deaths BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN You see them all along SH 199, a constant reminder to all of lives lost too soon. The memorials also serve as warnings to drive responsibly to friends, acquaintances and even strangers. But to the families of those who died, the memorials mean so much more. As the tenth anniversary approaches of the tragic deaths of brothers Brandyn and Matthew Lunsford on SH 199

near the Denver Trail exit, vandals have removed the crosses bearing the boys’ names as well as several teddy bears at the site of the accident. The crosses and bears were part of a memorial to the brothers that’s been maintained for a decade by faithful family friends. Those same friends have since replaced the crosses with new ones, and added new and additional solar lights and edging. But Matthew and Brandyn’s father,

Lee Lunsford, says he simply cannot understand why someone would do something so hurtful. “Matthew’s cross was blue, Brandyn’s was green, and their names were on them,” Lunsford said. “I don’t want to know who took them, but I’d like for them to be returned. “I think it reminds people to pay attention, especially when it’s raining,” LunPLEASE SEE PARENT, PAGE 2A.

Boyd Road Accident

Azle resident Ted Gerald Wright, 57, was struck by a vehicle as he crossed Boyd Road on foot Friday night, July 30, about 10:35 p.m. According to an Azle Police Department report on the incident, Wright ran southwest in the 900 block and failed to yield the right-of-way to a white 2009 Pontiac Torrent driven by Chelsie Eldonae Brown, 28, of Springtown. Wright ran in front of Brown’s southbound vehicle immediately before being struck. He suffered critical injuries from the impact and was transported by CareFlite air ambulance to a Fort Worth hospital. Wright’s condition was unavailable at press time. Photo by Carla Noah Stutsman

ers that kicks off the 2015 NFL Preseason. Humble beginnings in Azle Pennington grew up in Azle, attending Eagle Heights Elementary, Azle Elementary (which, of course, he reverently calls the “Rock School”), and Azle Junior High before graduating from Azle High School in 1993. While taking newspaper and yearbook classes at AHS, Pennington says he met the two people who “get all the credit in the world” for recognizing his talent and urging him to make good use of it. “Fred Stockdale was the fine arts director for Azle ISD, and I’ll be forever grateful to him

for recognizing photography as a creative medium,” Pennington said. “Linda Roselle was the yearbook advisor, and she introduced me to Bob Buckel and Mark Campbell at The Azle News, and Bob let me shoot for the newspaper when I was still in high school.” Immediately after graduating, Pennington headed to the University of Texas at Arlington, where Roselle had already introduced him to the advisors for the UTA student newspaper. “I’ll never, ever forget the day Linda Roselle stopped me during yearbook class and said, ‘Hey, do you realize people make a living doing this?’ It was like a truck hit me – a light went on in my head. She totally put that bug in my ear and pushed me to pursue that.

“I’m very lucky,” Pennington added. “I grew up in a small town, and I’ve literally traveled the world doing my dream job my entire life.” Certainly, there are others who have been instrumental in helping along the way. But Stockdale and Roselle were the first to ignite and build a passion for photography in him, Pennington says. Pennington worked as a senior staff photographer with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram for 10 years, where he covered sports, conflict, and human interest stories. For the last three years, he’s been a staff photographer with Getty Images. Even with his strong resume and incredible photography experience, Pennington says he was in disbelief when he got the phone call from the NFL Hall of Fame informing him he’d won. “I was completely shocked when I got the call – this is a real honor, and I was completely surprised,” he said. “My competitors are the best of the best. 321 West Main Street Azle, Texas Phone: (817) 270-3340 Fax: (817) 270-5300

Beatles cover band closes Music in the Park but organizers don’t plan to just ‘let it be’ in 2016 New lighting to be installed by next year BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN

After seven seasons of Music in the Park, one thing is clear: Azle loves it. Band on the Run fi nished off the 2015 summer concert series with its performance Friday, July 31 to a giant crowd in Central Park. Polly Huffman, 2015 chairman of the city of Azle’s Special Events Advisory Board (SEAB), had nothing but praise for everyone involved in the grand success of the series’ seventh season. From the eight bands that performed, to members of the SEAB, event sponsors and even the city’s parks employees, Huffman said hard work – sometimes in high heat – paid off and is very much appreciated. “It was an outstanding, excellent, overwhelming year – I just can’t fi nd enough adjectives to describe how wonderful it’s been,” Huffman said. “Each Friday night in June and July, the bands played to 800 to 1,500 people, and we were just amazed. We worried that people might get tired of Music Once again, music lovers poured into Central Park to hear the latest offerings by a group invited by the Special Events Advisory Board. Jury duty? We’ve all gotten that little piece of mail that made our stomach knot up and our eyes glaze over. A jury summons used to mean taking a day off work, fighting for a parking spot in downtown Fort Worth, sitting in a room of similarly perturbed folks, and waiting for your name to be called. If you live in Tarrant County, there’s a much better way now: it’s called “eResponse.” Using the eResponse system, jurors can confirm their jury service date or request exemptions, disqualifications, or deferrals of the date of service. These jurors are then emailed their court assignments or responses to their excusal requests. The email gives instructions

on where and when the juror should report, as well as an embedded link to the court-specific questionnaire, so all necessary paperwork is completed before their appearance for court. If a court cancels or is delayed, Jury Services is able to notify the eResponse-registered jurors via automated phone calls and emails, and if the trial is canceled, the juror is notified not to appear. Because all jurors who appear in person or report directly to the court are paid upon dismissal, this advance notice not to appear saves the county the money that would have been paid to those jurors who weren’t needed. Jurors’ use of the eResponse system grows each year, from

29 percent in its first year to 65 percent of jurors thus far in 2015. Over time this has produced a significant financial savings for Tarrant County. “Our system wasn’t broken, but we knew we could make it better,” said Jury Bailiff Paula Giaimo Morales, who implemented the eResponse system. “Implementation of our online system has made the process more convenient for both the jurors and our staff, and by allowing an efficient and effective way to notify jurors in advance of court cancellations, it has saved Tarrant County citizens more than $300,000 in the last three years.” It’s important to note that jurors who prefer to may still ap- Pat and Dean White will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Aug. 15 from 1-4 pear in person to serve. p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 109 West Third Street in Springtown.

Chamber hears about art at its monthly meeting Azle Area Chamber of Commerce members got an upbeat message from local pastor/author/optimist/art enthusiast Perrianne Brownback at the group’s Aug. 4 meeting. Brownback reiterated the idea that Azle’s art community is thriving and that supporting the arts in turn supports area commerce. A popular “spokes-puppy” made a visit, too. Sweetie, a 5-yearold beagle-Labrador mix, entertained the crowd. “She’s the perfect example of the kinds of dogs at the shelter,” said Jessie Flores, Azle Animal Shelter supervisor. Perrianne Brownback (left) spoke at the Azle Area Chamber of Commerce monthly meeting Aug. 4, but it was Sweetie (above) from the Azle Animal Shelter who stole the show. Photos by Natalie Gentry

uppose you were a young, former British army officer hunting alone in the American West, traveling with a dog and your supplies on a sled. You had spent a night under a heavy buffalo robe, holding the dog, Ishmah, for warmth. It was so cold your beard had icicles, and “jingled like bells.” With the sled loaded to begin traveling the next morning, Ishmah heard wolves howling and ran off, pulling the sled with all the supplies. Such was the dilemma of Captain John Palliser somewhere in the American West of the Upper Mississippi River in the winter of 1847. He tried to follow the tracks, but became lost with no fire, blankets, food or weapons. The six foot, four inch tall Irishman, born in Dublin in 1817, grew up on his father's country estate in County Waterford. He attended Trinity College in Dublin and served in the British military (the Waterford militia) off and on from 1839 to 1863, reaching the rank of captain. He took a year off (fall of 1847-spring 1848) to hunt in the American West as numerous other noblemen from the British Isles began doing. He didn't organize a big expedition like some of the wealthier upper class, but roughed it on his own a lot of the time. Not as interested in the history and geography, he mostly just liked to hunt, keeping the skins and other trophies. Fortunately, in the serious situation in which Palliser found himself that wintry day, his dog returned after several hours with the sled intact. That close scrape was not his only one. Once while climbing up mountains to hunt bighorn sheep, the sheep set off an avalanche of rocks, and debris fell on top of Palliser. Another time

he wounded an elk. Thinking it dead, he approached with his knife to skin it. The animal kicked the knife out of Palliser's hand, began pawing him, nearly knocking him to the ground. PAGES FROM Then on anothoccasion an WESTERN er angry buffalo HISTORY ran at him and him head J’Nell L. Pate hit on, which Palliser described as “with a shock like an earthquake.” Fortunately, the buffalo's head was thick with fur, thus softening the blow, and its head was so big that the horns reached on each side of Palliser instead of striking him. Even so, Palliser was knocked into a snowdrift. One would think that the young man would stop hunting alone, and perhaps he did. He was very resourceful, however, when he needed to be, building buffalo-skin boats, making a shelter with tree branches and shooting an animal to make pants for himself. His trip to the American West lasted only eleven months. He did camp with others on the Yellowstone River near the mouth of the Big Horn tributary to it. He called it a “hunter's heaven” when nearby he could hunt buffalo, elk, deer, antelope, sheep, and also spend time fishing. Even duck and pheasant were nearby. Of course, not yet protected from killing, eagles fell prey to Palliser's gun. His only complaint was that no bears existed in that area. He found them elsewhere, though. When he left to go back to Europe,

two small boats made of buffalo skins carried the skins, horns and other animal trophies to an American Fur Company post where they traveled by steamboat down to St. Louis to ship home. He even took some buffalo calves alive to Ireland. Palliser later came back to North America, employed by the Royal Geographical Society and the British government to explore and survey the Canadian prairies and Rockies. The Palliser Expedition (1857-1860) explored possible routes in Canada for the Canadian Pacific Railway, and he also discovered new plants. The Royal Geographical Society awarded Palliser their Patron's Gold Medal for his work and published a map of the surveyed areas in 1865. Palliser's work was instrumental in ending the domination of the Hudson's Bay Company over land that covered all tributaries to Hudson Bay, and he is credited with opening up a new era of settlement and development in the Canadian West. However, he reported that the area of what is now southeastern Alberta and southwestern Saskatchewan was too dry for agriculture, but the British government ignored it and encouraged farming. Unfortunately for the poor farmers, later events proved Palliser correct. The 1930s Dust Bowl drought devastated the area just as it did in the American Great Plains. A Palliser Hotel and a Palliser neighborhood exist in Calgary, Alberta, and also a Palliser Range in the Canadian Rockies. He died in Waterford, Ireland in 1887. Accomplished though he was, I had never heard of Palliser until I read Peter Pagnamento's book, Prairie Fever: How British Aristocrats Staked A Claim to the American West. Thanks, Peter. Desert: ‘It’s a dry heat’

Putting a ring on it – 40 years apart his seemed like a really good idea at the time. In the spring of 1975, I had an elaborate (for me) scheme to impress my impossibly lovely next door neighbor who was now visiting me at UT-Austin from Southwest Texas State in San Marcos. We had bought tickets to a Chicago concert together earlier; they were $5 each and we walked to a neighborhood drug store – in an old house! – where a ON YOUR lady moMARK seyed over from a Mark K. Campbell counter to a small booth, opened the window, and we picked out seats off the venue chart. (After any purchase, those seats were X’d out with a pencil.) So we had tickets to a great group, one that was “rock ‘n’ roll with horns.” My master plan was to give her a memento when Chicago played “Colour My World.” The concert arrived and progressed. In my pocket, wrapped in a tissue, was what I had spent my last $5 on, a “jade” ring. I had no idea if the green circle was really jade, but I had saved a couple of $2.50 checks from my mother (“Don’t tell your dad”) to buy it. A white-tuxed Terry Kath arrived on the stage and walked up to a white grand piano. The unmistakable piano beginning of “Colour My World” started and I fished that wrapped ring out of my pocket and pressed it into her hand. Home run! That worked out as wonderfully as I had hoped, even in my teenage hormonal frenzy. The (soon to be) Bride loved it. Flash forward 40 years. I figured it would be cool to reenact that “Colour My World” scene, especially since I had won Chicago tickets – on my birthday, another good omen, surely. There were some bumps along the way. The concert was at an outdoor venue, Gexa Energy Pavilion, in July, and our ducats were just lawn “seats.” Still, I managed to find that old jade ring. I scratched out a few heartfelt words on hotel stationery and tucked it into my back pocket. (She discovered it at the elevator, but I retrieved the note before she read it.) At Gexa, it was 7,000 degrees. Before we got our blanket spread out on the lawn, I had sweated through every piece of clothing I had on. Clandestinely, I slid the ring under my doffed flip-flops. However, when I came back from a restroom visit, the Bride had rearranged the blanket and used my shoes to anchor it; now I had no idea where the green ring was in the green grass as the sun disappeared. Terrific. This was not going to be 1975 redux. That’s when I noticed the group was playing all of “Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon” from Chicago II and “Colour My World” was part of it. Miraculously, I found the ring, just when the song started. I passed it and the note over to her. She would probably rather have had an Aquafina water bottle, but she smiled – which meant a lot, even all these years later since my frenzy for her has not diminished.

ou’ve heard that, right? “It’s a dry heat.” It’s 110 in the shade, but it’s a dry heat. That’s what they say, anyway. Well, whatever they’re selling, I’m not buying. Dry heat! If there are 3 digits involved, it’s hot! My idea of perfect weather can be summed up by my golf game. I usually shoot in the 70’s. If it’s much warmer or colder than that, I don’t play. And then I went and spent a week in the desert. Last week I attended a conference in Phoenix. I was prepared to be miserable when I saw the forecast range of 103-109 every day I was scheduled LIFE MATTERS to be there. I was extra Gerry Lewis nervous because a part of the schedule included two mornings of golf. In case you missed the pun, that thing about shooting in the 70’s is completely temperature related. I’m a crummy golfer. Thank goodness, the golf game was about strategic networking and not golf. When I play with people who take golf seriously, it is not fun for anyone. How hot was it? It was so hot, the soles of my golf shoes came unglued! After 10 holes, both soles had completely come off and I felt like I was walking around in ballet shoes. At least that is my assumption, since I don’t have any personal ballerina experience. Actually, I don’t think the heat in Phoenix had anything to do with my shoes coming apart, but it makes for a great story. And who am I to let a little truth get in the way of a great story? Here’s a story from the desert that is absolutely true. I deliberately didn’t check the temperature while we were out that day, because I didn’t want to be psyched out. Around hole 13, we were sitting in the cart waiting. It was a rare shady spot and there was a little bit of a breeze. It was downright pleasant, so I risked checking the Weather Channel app on my phone. It was 101 degrees! Not only was the temperature 101, the app said it felt like 97. Seriously. Summer wind chill in the desert! I’ve come to the conclusion that there might actually be something to that whole “dry heat” thing. I’ve sweated more carrying my briefcase to my car on summer mornings at home than I did in an entire week in the valley of the sun. This requires me to admit something: I am sometimes wrong! And the sooner I admit it, the better off I am because everyone else knows I am sometimes wrong. Our lives don’t just matter to God when we are right. Confessing when we are wrong leads to healthier relationships and gives us the opportunity to extend the grace of forgiveness to each other. There’s great power in that. While we were outside after dinner one evening a little shower came up. I just sat there. It was a dry rain. Promise kept: Obama changed U.S., negatively Dear Editor: Please pardon this very appropriate verb now: America gets TRUMPed with President Barack Obama literally giving the store away in lifting all embargoes, coupled with letting our sworn enemy, Iran have nuclear energy – hint, hint, a nuclear bomb! – in meetings June 14. What’s that ubiquitous political phrase – “to just kick the

can down the road”? It’s meaning: to defer conclusive action with short-term solution. Well, in this case, to kick Iran down the road. Oh, um, go along to get along. Our president seemingly has his own little caliphate kicking in overdrive with this deal to surAzle render our country over to a hostile nation without fi ring a shot. The only people Mr. Obama is answering to, is mullahs with drab colored head scarves perpetually shouting in a clarion voice, “Death to America.” The most disturbing part of this is that these Machiavellian politician Democrats and RINO [Republicans in Name Only] Republicans alike – who have the backbone of a Slinky and fold over like a cheap suit at Kmart blue light special – have given Mr. Obama everything that he wanted in the past and the present are onboard for this nonsense as well for this quisling reincarnate of Bene-

dict Arnold. America, you certainly got what you wanted in 2008 when you elected this character not once, but twice, when Mr. Obama said “he was going to fundamentally change America.” This is one time a politician kept his promise by decoupling our democracy, our way of life, and tearing up the Constitution. And the fi nal coup de grace as reported by various media outlets: a nefarious side deal to protect Iran from an Israeli airstrike on the nuclear sites. For you loyal Obama supporters, you might want to research what the God of mankind says about someone who goes against His people (the Jews) and if you're too lazy to pick up a Bible, just Google the answer. But don't fret, you still got your “free stuff.” Joseph Bryan Fort Worth

There, the new 2015 AHS varsity squad will face the hosts, Godley, and Springtown. That trio of contests is immediately followed by a trip to Burleson the next day to tangle in another series of scrimmages, this time against the hosts and Northwest Eaton. The season offi cially begins Tuesday, Aug. 11 with a 6 p.m. contest against Decatur at the Lady Eagle gym. Then the varsity continues its road adventures, this time with the fi rst tournament of the season at Denton Ryan. Azle opens with Lubbock Monterey at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14. The Lady Hornets regroup after those contests to ready for another tourney that starts Aug. 20 at Northwest. Movie Man

Azle News Wednesday, August 5, 2015

Seems Impossible but Rogue Nation best M:I yet Say what you want about Tom Cruise – his private life might not be too impressive but his fi lm career sure is. Cruise is a movie star.

had recent worldwide disasters pinned on it – including the bombing of the Kremlin. Cruise believes the group behind the events and the one blaming the IMF is a shadowy group called The Syndicate. After narrowly escaping a potentially deadly interrogation thanks to Ilsa (Rebecca Ferguson), Cruise begins trying to fi nd the man who heads The Syndicate, Lane (Sean Harris). But Harris is always a step ahead; even with Ferguson – who may or may not be a double agent – popping up, Harris can’t be grabbed. Back in the U.S., Brandt (Jeremy Renner) is having a tough time keeping CIA director Hunley (Alec Baldwin) from shutting the IMF down. Eventually, that’s exactly what happens. So, Cruise reassembles his team of computer whiz Luther (Ving Rhames) and dedicated Benji (Simon Pegg) along with Renner and the iffy Ferguson to pull off an elaborate scheme that ends with someone shooting the British prime minister. Of course, it all works out.

About the film Every Mission: Impossible movie has been mostly good, a claim that almost no series can make. The fi rstM:I movie came out in 1996, directed by crazy maverick Brian (I love long tracking shots) De Palma. It was good (Movie Man No. 129, 7) if kinda muddled. It made a whopping $181 million in America – that of course means sequel city. In 2000, Mission: Impossible II, directed by action specialist John Woo, did even better at the box offi ce with $215.4 million. The Movie Man was more enamored with the fi rst one, but M:I II (MM #342, 6) had its moments. It took six years for Mission: Impossible III to arrive and, the weakest of the bunch despite being directed by fanboy favorite J.J. Abrams, it looked like the series might’ve been played out. M:I III (2006, MM #664, What works 5) made just $133.4 million in Cruise is cool. Cruise has a weapon and trains his sight back and forth on the two remaining killers who are about to shoot – a creepy bad guy and Ferguson, who recently saved Cruise’s life. He solves his dilemma by wounding the archbishop himself. The kicker is that, afterward, Ferguson said that’s exactly what she was going to do. It’s a great scene.

Temps to soar over 100 The cooler early summer is just a memory now. Real Texas summer has arrived. Depending on the local forecaster, temperatures will be at least 100 degrees for the next several days. And some are making dire predictions – guessing temperatures could soar as high as 108 by early next week. One example: Channel 8 says 105 for Thursday, then 104, 104, 106, and 106. No rain is predicted. Azle PD offers fans for those in need. Call Sgt.
