Just looking out for each other, and customers Brookshire’s employees keep cool during armed robbery BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN Mark Laudenheimer was asleep when the phone rang. The store manager of Brookshire’s Food & Pharmacy located at 511 N. Stewart St. in Azle says he could barely wrap his head around what he was told. “It’s after 10 at night, you’re asleep and you find out your store has just been robbed,” Laudenheimer said. “So many things go through your head – and it’s not about the money, it’s not about the things in the store – I was just worried about human life. Was everybody okay?” The store was robbed by an armed man right at closing time Tuesday, April 7. A Ponder man, John Polk, 52, is now in the Tarrant County jail charged with robbery in the incident. Everybody was OK, thanks to six of Laudenheimer’s employees and the Azle Police Department.

armed. “Our assistant manager handled the situation perfectly,” Laudenheimer said. “He was never anxious, he didn’t try anything heroic. He followed the man’s directions and let him know that whatever he wanted, the employees would do. “We had several employees who were near the front of the store when the man came in, and they all knew something was wrong,” Laudenheimer continued. “He was wearing a coat and a hat – the weather didn’t call for any of that – it just didn’t look right to them.” Besides the assistant manager, there were six employees on duty at the time of the robbery. Three of them are students at Azle High School. “One employee told the others to move toward the back of the store and she did the same as she called 911,” Laudenheimer said. “She stayed on the phone with the dispatcher until it was all over so police knew exactly “It didn’t look right” Polk walked into the store that night what was going on from the beginand engaged the assistant manager. ning.” The two went into an office; Polk Azle police Sergeants Bob Spohn, center, and Steve Stutsman, right, question John Elmer Polk, left, demanded money and said he was PLEASE SEE THIEF, PAGE 2A. moments after he robbed the Brookshire’s Food & Pharmacy in Azle April 7. AHS drumline 16th at World competition BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN “They knew they’d just turned in the performance of a lifetime.” That’s the reason one mother of a member of the Azle High School Indoor Drumline gave for emotional tears that flowed freely Friday morning, April 10, from the group in Ohio outside the University of Dayton are-

na where they had just competed. They were hours away from finding out their score, or where they would place in the World Championship competition they’d worked so hard to reach. But in that moment, they knew they had done their best and that their best was really, really good.

So there were no tears when they learned they just missed one of 15 spots in the finals. After all, the AHS Indoor Drumline was now ranked 16th in the world, tied with long-standing powerhouse Father Ryan High School from Nashville, Tennessee. Oh, yeah, and they had beaten

archrival Boswell. There was live coverage of the group by the local Fox affiliate in Dayton. The AHS drumline appeared in three live segments on the station Thursday while practicing for preliminary competition. The AHS show, “Up In the Air,” is the brainchild of Percussion Director

Richard Kearns and begins and ends with the familiar strains of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” in tribute to his late grandfather. A young boy who dreams of flying – with a homemade kite and a jetpack fashioned from 2-litre Dr Pepper botPLEASE SEE 16TH, PAGE 3A.

Another employee – one of the high school students – noticed a little girl running around near the front of the store. That employee was able to get the girl’s attention and convince her to head toward the rear of the store without scaring her, Laudenheimer said. Thanks to Azle PD He also praised the Azle Police Department. “He (the robber) maybe stepped John Polk one foot outside this store and they were on him, and he never knew it was coming,” Laudenheimer said. “They got here so fast, and our employee told them when he was about to exit the front door. ate well the following day, providing food to all shifts as their way of saying “thanks.” Laudenheimer said the training Brookshire's offers its employees blended right in with the assistant manager’s natural ability to stay calm. “No one panicked and that’s so important. It’s like they just knew they needed to take care of each other,” Laudenheimer said. “We’re a tight family here, and the employees did what they always do – they looked out for each other and for our customers.” Polk is in custody in the Tarrant County jail as of Tuesday, April 14. He is held on a charge of robbery, a second-degree felony, in lieu of $150,000 bond. Azle police recovered the money Polk intended to take in the robbery as well as two handguns at the scene.

One-Act Play cast makes AHS history The 2015 Azle High School Drama Department has officially advanced further in University Scholastic League (UIL) One-Act Play competition than any AHS troupe in history. After moving to the district level, the actors performed The Shape of the Grave in bi-district

competition Friday, April 10 at Chisholm Trail High School. Although they did not advance to area round, the production earned Azle the alternate position. That means that if another group cannot make it to area, the AHS Drama Department will compete after all.

The cast of Azle High School’s One-Act Play takes a bow after its district production of The Shape of the Grave. While it’s not likely to happen, it certainly could. Drama Department Director Tia Moen said she couldn’t be more proud of her students for

making Hornet history.“It's the farthest Azle drama has made it in our UIL OAP world. I'm proud,” Moen said. “Their journey has made them into stronger

and more passionate young men and women. The arts are alive!” In addition to the One-Act Play’s success, several individuals stood out to judges.

Elisabeth Sloan was named to the District All-Star Cast; Jason Shotwell received Honorable Mention All-Star Cast, and Jake Wood was named Best Tech.

tles, cardboard, and duct tape – conjures up the real thing in the form of the drumline. In modernistic white uniforms highlighted in sky blue and fitted with “real” jetpacks in addition to Frisbees and special indoor kites, the drumline becomes flight in the boy’s imagination. Who could believe that while playing difficult percussion pieces as they performed

intricate footwork, members of the drumline also flew kites and flung – and caught – flying discs? Evidently, they were the talk of Dayton during Worlds. It all came on the heels of the news just 21 days earlier that the drumline had been promoted from Open Class into World Class – the highest classification for a high school. It’s also the class with the fiercest competition, and the

AHS Indoor Drumline began competing in World Class at its very next competition – the Texas championships – where it placed second. The Azle squad placed 17th in World Competition two years ago. Its 16th place finish this year doesn’t just mean it climbed to the next step – it climbed to the next step among the stiffest competition that exists in its genre.

First local art festival deadline is April 22 by Natalie Gentry The Azle Area Chamber of Commerce has put out a call for artists of every genre to submit applications to participate in the showcase at Azle Main Street Art Festival and Tour (AMSAFT). The Azle Main Street Art Festival and Tour will take place June 6-7 inside 404 Main. Art showcase The Chamber will host the juried art show, and selected artwork will be displayed Friday through Sunday and be available for purchase. Dear Mom, In a few days it will be one year since you went home to be with the SON of the Living God (Christ Jesus) in all His Glory. Even though, I know you’re in a much better place now, the sting of death still has a crucible to overcome in the present tense of this secular world for the living, and the heartache of not having you here to talk, laugh, and share in family love is immense. But, with our shared faith and constant prayer, it resonates more abundantly that we will see each other again in God’s paradise. On that April day one year ago, God had a plan. HE makes no mistakes, and because of HIS infinite wisdom, I will not question why. You now are at his side in all HIS splendor and singing with all the saints.

Mom, you shall always live deep down inside of our hearts with cherished memories and lasting legacy of your unvarnished love and joy, and with that infectious smile of yours that is irreplaceable.

From your two sons Larry and Don, your two daughters, Jamie and Nell, your so beloved sister, Aunt

Mae, your grandchildren, Benjamin, Hanna, J.J., Jeanette, Justin, Amy, and Trinity, your great grandchildren, Hadley and Asher, your loyal friend Thee in Tampa, who is our adopted family, your church family at Silver Creek Baptist Church, and finally, Susan, my wife, who was your daughter in-law, helpmate, nurse, and loving friend who selflessly and tirelessly gave of herself in your final years of life. We at this time wanted to send a special few days sooner Mother’s Day greeting and love to you in the Kingdom of Heaven where you sit now with our creator and God of our life. We love and miss you so terribly, and with God’s timing, we will all see you again soon. I love you,

Larry

Don’t get April Fooled by telephone and online scammers. Safeguarding your identity isn’t only a good idea on April Fools’ Day; it’s a good idea every day. Identity theft is serious business and it is growing exponentially. According to the Federal Trade Commission, about 9 million Americans fall victim to identity theft each year, as opposed to 500,000 back in 2003. One third of Americans have had their identity stolen and ten percent of Americans have had their identity stolen more than once according to Findlaw.com. Watch out for impersonators. Think twice before giving that telephone caller sensitive information such as account numbers, credit card security code or your social security number. Any genuine credit card company caller will understand your hesitancy to provide this information; pressure over the telephone is an additional giveaway. Don’t click on email links or provide information when a company emails you and requests sensitive information. Phishing emails with misspellings and poor grammar are telltale signs, but scammers have gotten more sophisticated and many fraudulent emails appear genuine. If a security concern about your account has been raised, double check by calling your credit card company using the customer service number listed on your account statement. Disposing of personal information goes beyond shredding. When getting rid of an old computer, use a wipe utility to overwrite the hard drive. For additional security, the hard drive can be removed and destroyed. Many shredding companies also offer this service. Don’t forget the information stored on your mobile device. Once your information has been safely transferred to the new unit, be sure to remove the memory or subscriber identity module (SIM) card from your old mobile device. Remove all identifying data, including

texts, voicemail messages, email, bookmarks, contacts and photos. Your service provider or owner’s manual can help you understand how to do this. As mobile devices move toward a mobile pay environment, it will become more critical than ever to remove sensitive information from the old device before switching to a new device. Always choose strong, secure passwords. Here are the top 3 most popular passwords on SplashData’s 2014 list: 1. 123456 2. password 3. 12345 How long do you think it would take an identity thief to guess those? Don’t use names that are meaningful to you as your passwords, such as names of pets, children and parents, as these are easy to find on social media. Don’t use the same password for everything. Make your password 8 or more letters and digits. Mix things up with upper and lower case letters and substitute numbers or symbols for letters – @ for a, 1 for I, 0 (Zero) for O, 5 or $ for S. When working remotely, safety first. Never send sensitive information over a public network. Don’t leave your laptop auto-logged in. Make sure your laptop is password protected in case of loss or theft. Be smart and safe when it comes to your identity. Recovering from identity theft is no joke. For more information on preventing, identifying and overcoming identity theft, visit the FTC at www.ftc. gov or your state’s secretary of state website to find information on ID theft laws in your state. Discover how you can protect yourself and your family by calling 817917-6001. Appointments can be made from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Computer classes begin this week and will be held from 10:30-11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There will be a class for beginners and a class for those who are more advanced. Come and learn a new skill or improve the ones you have. Friday, April 17 is Produce Day and Pet Food Day. There will also be a Center business meeting during lunch. Seniors, take the boredom out of your life by coming to the Senior Center and enjoy fellowship with others near your age.

Hoang will study biology at Texas A&M upon leaving AHS this spring. A four-year soccer player, Hoang said the effort she put in the sport was one of her proudest high school memories. With a GPA of 100.49, Hoang is ranked No. 24 out of 373 Class of 2015 classmates. She belongs to the National Honor Society and is a PAL (Peer Assistance & Leadership). She performed as part of the drumline for three years. As a senior, she cheered as part of the Rowdy spirit squad. Sloan said she enjoys acting in AHS productions and was the wicked witch in the well-received Wizard of Oz last winter. Being on the improv team keeps her on the stage. Upbeat, Sloan said she considers herself “peculiar” and enjoys studying off-the-beaten path subjects like philosophy. She is No. 52 in her class with a GPA of 98.05. Loeffelholz is off to the University of Oklahoma where he, a trumpet player, will major in music. He said his goal it to become “a successful and innovative jazz musician.” A multi-instrumentalist, who writes music on guitar and trumpet, Loeffelholz has been involved in several facets of music at AHS; he also plays in his church’s productions. He is No. 80 with a GPA of 95.23 where he said he was good at hanging tough under pressure. Amyett will become a nurse at Stephen F. Austin.

Top Ten at Texas Tech

The Eagle Has Landed

Emily Bryan, AHS Class of 2014, was named one of the 2015 Top Ten Freshmen at Texas Tech University. The Mortar Board Forum chose her and nine as the elite among Tech’s 11,000 first-time freshmen admitted in the fall of 2014. Bryan said, “I give a lot of credit to the faculty at Azle High School and the extracurricular activities the school supported.”

Texas Health Azle hosts shredding event April 18 Whether it’s dusty stacks of old pay stubs, mortgage or credit card statements, tax forms or utility bills, the threat of identity theft these days makes letting go tough. That’s why Texas Health Azle, in honor of Earth Day 2015, is hosting a free “Shred-a-thon” event on Saturday, April 18.

The Shred-a-thon will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, April 18, in the front parking lot of the hospital. Personal paperwork will be safely shredded onsite beyond the leering eyes of identity thieves — and all paper shreddings are recycled. More than 6,300 pounds of paper were shredded at last

year’s event at Texas Health Azle, contributing to a total of almost 80,000 pounds at Texas Health facilities. The onsite service will be provided by Iron Mountain Incorporated. Individuals are allowed up to six boxes of paperwork – but cardboard, among other items, cannot be shredded.

These ain’t your grandpa’s cruises sailing today

D

espite ships sinking all the time or being infested with a variety of diseases, cruises are still a hot vacation option. I have been on just one cruise and that was way back in 1985 when there weren’t that many vessels. Today...holy cow, you can find plenty to do on the boat between bouts of dysentery and bailing. In a way to get vacationers to forget the possibilities of something unfortunate happening while you are hundreds of miles at sea, far from any

immediate help or land – cruise lines have ramped up “theme” adventures. Super hot right now are musical cruises. Want to see your favorite (likely Old School) artist trying to stay steady on a stage tilted 30 degrees? You can catch Journey, Styx, Smokey Robinson, and Rascal Flatts at sea this year. You might also catch Chicago, Martina McBride, and REO Speedwagon. Why you could be the guy who gets to hold Olivia Newton-John’s hair while ON YOUR she barfs over the side of the boat! MARK There are also cruises that include acts that are lesser known and even Mark K. Campbell

a tribute bands trip. Among other themes to choose from: chocolate, beer, wine, and exotic food cruises. There are “celebrity” ventures where you can meet and greet a (former) movie/TV star. How about a

classic movie cruise – probably won’t see Titanic – or “long-retired baseball greats” trip? There’s a 12-step cruise, “the Sober Cruise.” And health and wellness cruises, including one dubbed “Yogacruise” and another “marathon” outing where you will walk 26.2 miles on the deck while sailing. Still not sold? There’s always needlepoint cruises. And ballroom dancing. And Poker cruises. But if you’re looking for kinky, try these two on for size. There are dress-up cruises where

you can don steampunk apparel or you can take a voyage on the “Drag Stars at Sea” trip. You can also cruise nude. If that doesn’t do it for you, there’s always the chance to get your freak on by taking a politically themed cruise. Yes, there’s a cruise where the highlight of the trip is listening to Newt Gringrich, hopefully clothed; otherwise, it brings new meaning to the phrase “abandon ship.” Mark K. Campbell is the News editor and the entertainment on his cruise was “comedian” Homer Noodleman. Really.

How a town gets its name – there's always a story

R

eaders of this column probably realize that I like to know how various towns or cities, especially in Texas, got their names. There's always a story! Take the name of “Eden,” a small community in Concho County near San Angelo in southwest Texas. Of course, “Garden of Eden” comes to mind. No, the first settlers in that little Western town weren't thinking “lush garden area” or anything. The story begins with a man named Frederick Ede, born in England. He came to Texas in the early 1860s. In 1875 he married Catherine Dingley Reynolds, and they arrived in Concho County in 1871. In that year Fred and his brother drove a flock of sheep west from near Lockhart in Caldwell County, and settled in Concho County. Only one family had already arrived in the area, Harvey and Louisa McCarty. It was Fred Ede, however, who in 1882 planned a town site with 40 acres of his land and in February of

THE

that year donated a site for the town square. He laid out blocks with a yardstick and then sold town lots. He added an “e” to his last name to create the town name of “Eden.” Perhaps he really was trying to play on the Garden of Eden connection to attract new settlers. The Ede family continued to live on their sheep and cattle ranch. Then in 1883 the U.S. government granted a Post Office designation to the new town, and Ede became the first postmaster. The family remained on the ranch until 1896 when Ede died. Shortly thereafter Catherine and her children moved to San Angelo. One of those children, Will, born in 1884 in Eden, was twelve or thirteen at the time. Catherine Ede kept title to the ranch. Will married a lady named May Hemphill in 1914. (Pardon the genealogy, but there is a reason!) Unfortunately, Will's wife May died during the influenza epidemic during World War I, leaving a two-year-old daughter, Virginia. Will Ede remarried. He owned Henderson-Ede, Inc. Studebaker Automobile and Acces-

sories. Later he sold real estate and, at some point, served as mayor of San Angelo. In news articles he was described as an oil man and rancher. Will's first in-laws, the Hemphills PAGES FROM – Virginia's WESTERN g r a n d p a r e n t s on her mother's HISTORY side – owned J’Nell L. Pate d r y - g o o d s stores in San Angelo and Lubbock. Consequently, from whatever source, Virginia Ede's family had the resources and opportunity to give her a college education, probably unusual for a woman in West Texas at the time. She chose Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. There the beautiful, blond Virginia, daughter of a prominent San Angelo family, met a goodPublisher Kim Ware

looking, dark-haired, stocky, physical education major whose blue-collar father worked in the stockyards area of Fort Worth. The young man was working at a downtown department store to pay his way through college. His name: Horace Carswell, Jr. He did manage to play several sports. Virginia majored in home economics and was president of the Home Ec. Club her senior year. Whether sparks flew during their college years, or if after college any letters were exchanged is unclear. What happened is that Virginia graduated in 1938 and went home to San Angelo. Horace graduated in 1939 and joined the Army Air Corps, training in San Antonio. By 1941 he was transferred to Goodfellow Field in San Angelo as a pilot instructor, and either looked up Virginia, or they had been staying in touch. They married in 1942, and shortly after the wedding he was stationed in Pueblo, Colorado at the Army Air Base. When their son was born in 1943, they named him Robert Ede Carswell, the “Ede” after Virginia's maiden

name, but of course, after her Ede ancestors, and ultimately her grandfather who had created the town of Eden. Sheep ranching increased in the late 1920s and the years following, and apparently the Ede family still was involved. From that southwestern area of Texas, ranchers shipped their sheep to the Fort Worth Stockyards. They helped make Fort Worth during the World War II war year of 1944 the largest sheep market in the U.S. with over two million sheep receipts that year. Of course, Horace Carswell rose to the rank of major, served in the Pacific Theatre, and died as his bullet-riddled B-24 crashed into a mountainside. The newly-created Air Force re-named Fort Worth Army Air Field, Carswell Air Force Base in honor of the home town boy, and Virginia and their young son came from San Angelo to the dedication ceremonies. The town of Eden survives, and the 2010 census cited 2,766 residents. Senate passes bill to remake Public Integrity Unit

S

Senate’s budget bill moves The Senate Finance Committee on April 8 unanimously approved Committee Substitute House Bill 1, its version of a state budget for fiscal years 2016 and 2017. Coming in a $211.4 billion — about $1.5 billion more than the version passed earlier by the full Texas House — the legislation was authored primarily by Senate Finance Committee Chair Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, and Vice Chair Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa, D-McAllen. Next step in the process will be for the bill to be passed by the full Senate and then to iron out differences with the House version, be assigned to a joint House-Senate conference committee, to be named by Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who presides over the Senate, and House Speaker Joe Straus. Regarding the Senate version Hinojosa said, “We increased access and funding to services needed by our most vulnerable populations: the young, elderly,

in Travis County since 1982, when it was created by an act of the Texas Legislature. Efforts toward stripping the unit and its authority from Travis County began two years ago when Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg, who heads the unit, was arrested and pled guilty to drunken driving. Then-Gov. Rick Perry called for Lehmberg’s resignation approaching the end of the 2013 legislative session, but Lehmberg rebuffed Perry by remaining in office. Perry vetoed the unit’s $7.5 million budget. He was later indicted on a charge of official coercion for using his veto power in an attempt to force Lehmberg to resign. Lehmberg was elected to a four-year term as district attorney in 2012. SB 10, approved by the Senate with all 20 of the body’s Republicans voting in favor and all 10 of the body’s Democrats voting in opposition, has moved to the Texas House for consideration.

tatewide authority to investigate and prosecute public corruption would be moved out of the Travis County District Attorney’s Office under Senate Bill 10, legislation approved by the Senate on April 9. Sen. Joan Huffman, chair of the Senate State Affairs Committee, wrote the legislation under which the Texas Rangers, a division of the Department of Public Safety, would reestablish and support the state’s Public Integrity Unit and assume the initial investigatory role when a complaint is filed against a public official. Cases would be prosecuted in the county where a public official resides. “After more than three decades of accepting this cultural norm, the public has lost confidence in this tacit scheme, and Texas needs a fair and explicit process to hold wrongdoers accountable,” Huffman said. Bettencourt said his bill would create a “framework to help those with a terminal disease get access to drugs and treatments still in the federal Food and Drug Administration trial process quickly and safely.” In Senate floor debate, Health and Human Services Committee Chair Charles Schwertner, R-Georgetown, raised a concern that families and patients facing dire circumstances could be easily deceived by people making false promises for profit. ‘Hornet humbler’

District loss helps Lady Hornet softball squad refocus

by mark k. campbell A rarity occurred April 7: The Lady Hornet softball team lost a game. And it was a district game. The 2-1 loss at Saginaw – the Lady Rough Riders pushed across a run in the final inning – was soon tabbed “the Hornet Humbler.” All season long, Azle (192, 9-1) was near perfect. Only a tournament loss to the No. 1 team in 4A, LaGrange, marred the 2015 record. Until the loss to Saginaw. The game was 1-1 after just nine outs. AHS hurler Samantha Bradley (10-1) limited hits to four and walked no one while striking out 8 hitters. District track meet set for Saginaw High School

Azle wins 2 5-5A games The Hornet baseball team nailed down a pair of district wins. Azle (7-8, 3-5) defeated Saginaw on the road and Wichita Falls at Jim Bob Nation’s Field of Dreams diamond. The 5-5A wins catapulted AHS back into the mix for the postseason. On April 7 at Saginaw, Azle built a 4-0 lead with a pair of two-run innings in the third and sixth. That was all starter Tommy Kay needed. He struck out 7 Rough Riders and permitted just 3 hits in a 4-1 victory. Coach Anthony Barron said, “Tommy did a fantastic job on the mound. He pitched all seven innings without an earned run.” Leadoff hitter Trey Ramos swatted 2 hits and scored. With 2 RBI, Trevor Boiles “came up big,” Barron recalled. Three days later, the Coyotes visited AHS on a nice spring April 10. Azle scored early when Ramos belted the first pitch of the Hornet at bat for a triple to the wall in right center field. However, Wichita Falls took a 2-1 lead with a pair of solo tallies in the second and third innings. Big bats got Azle the win as Sean Townsend and Tyler Albers both blasted home runs in the fifth inning. Townsend, who had plated Ramos in the first inning with a sacrifice fly, finished the game with 3 RBI.

Campbell Azle won, 4-3 as round two of district play began. Dylan Robinson and Boiles both doubled as AHS got 7 hits. On the mound Blake Hall permitted zero earned runs while pitching a complete game and striking out 8 Wichita Falls hitters. Barron said, “The team is putting together some quality at bats when needed. “I am very proud of how well

our guys have been battling and responding.” The next day in a non-district clash, Birdville beat Azle 8-1 as Barron used 4 pitchers. Junior varsity – The AHS JV (5-1-1 in 5-5A) crushed Saginaw 13-1 thanks to a 7-run sixth inning. Alex Newton singled home 2 runs in the first and also was the winning pitcher, fanning 6 Rough Riders, tossing a 4-hitter.

Weather continues to be a bugaboo this spring. The possibility of storms arriving Thursday, April 16 convinced District 5-5A officials to move the two-day track meet up one day. So the opening day of the event became Tuesday, April 14 with the finals following at Saginaw High School the next day. Azle has several athletes with shots at reaching the Region I meet in Lubbock May 1-2. Boys Coach Mike Norwood said junior hurdler Conrad Reinhard is in the top two in both the 110 and 300 meter distances. Sprinter Rylee McCracken, a senior, is having a stellar season and is in the top three in the 100 and 200, Norwood said. In the 800, Jake Self also could punch a ticket to Lubbock. “The competition in our district is tough, but Jake has a very good chance to get to regionals,” the coach noted. Coach Norwood said the AHS talent at the freshman and sophomore levels could bring home to Azle the JV team title. Girls Coach Melody Dennis likes several Lady Hornets’ chances including in the pole vault, high jump, some sprints and the 300 hurdles. Movie Man

Azle News Wednesday, April 15, 2015

Man, The Longest Ride is certainly aptly titled Chick flicks will be around forever. While TV networks like Lifetime cater to the same crowd that often devours “bodice-ripper” novels, many women love a full-bore romantic movie, too. About the film The Longest Ride is yet another adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel. When The Notebook became such a colossal success, Sparks became a go-to for female-centric books. Like with every other romantic/dramatic movie, every icky plot trope can be found: a cute meeting; differing personalities must find a way to overcome their seemingly impossible separate worlds; an old person is introduced, mirroring the modern day relationship with one that took place decades ago; lots of flashbacks; long, slow kisses; someone has a terrible secret from the past; there’s an inevitable break-up; finally one partner sees the light; everybody ends up happy. That’s The Longest Ride in a nutshell. No amount of ragging on it will deter fans of this ilk from attending; it’s like keeping a science-fiction nerd from another brain-dead Transformers flick – not gonna happen. Of interest especially in The Longest Ride is Alan Alda. Thanks to TV’s version of the movie M*A*S*H, Alda became a star in the 1970’s. He directed 31 of the episodes then branched out to the big screen. His first non-TV movie as a director was the highly anticipated Four Seasons in 1981. It’s an ensemble movie with great turns by Alda, who also wrote it, and Carol Burnett. It was well received and some folks thought Alda might be the second coming of Woody Allen. But Alda wasn’t. (He acted in a trio of Allen’s movies, however.)

upcoming elite New York internship in her major of art, Wake Forest senior Sophia (Britt Robertson) has to be almost forced to go to a rodeo with her sorority pals. There, she locks eyes with bull rider Luke (Scott Eastwood) and both are smitten. Driving home from a date, the duo comes upon an accident where an elderly man, Ira (Alda), is trapped. They save him as he pleads for them to collect a box that’s still in the car. At the hospital, the box is opened; it contains love letters from WWII when Ira was young (Jack Hutson) and captivated by the newly-arrived in North Carolina Ruth (Ooma Chaplin). While in current day, Robertson and Eastwood – whose secret is a head injury suffered earlier yet he keeps riding bulls – work through their problems, flashbacks reveal how Hutson and Chaplin resolved the issues of their era. Then comes the ending that everyone who has a Facebook account will see coming. (See What doesn’t work)

now that his beloved is gone. The actors in the flashback – Hutson and Chaplin – are excellent, too. So is the laconic Eastwood, a dead ringer for his dad from around the Rawhide era. The movie works much better in retro mode; the fashions, general look, vehicles, structures, and story line are more entertaining. Director George Tillman, Jr. keeps things balanced between the two eras with the bull riding scenes especially well handled.

What works Alda, aged and lined with watery, expressive eyes, tells his story and is believable as an old man who just wants to move on to whatever is next

Best scene After WWII, Hutson takes his newlywed bride Chaplin, who is crazy about art, to a small mountain college where all kinds of art are embraced. Chaplin erupts

The rating There’s a pretty steamy scene between Eastwood and Robertson that pushed the PG-13 a ways. Still, there’s almost no cussing and the only other reason for the rating is the bull riding scenes which are formidable. Summing up There’ll be another movie like The Longest Ride along soon enough. That’s good news if you like this sort of movie – and a warning if you don’t. Next up Paul Blart, Mall Cop 2.

find. She’s ridiculously slow about it. Alda’s big injury secret is shown during a war flashback, and the battlefield is not very realistic looking. This movie seems incredibly long – and it is at 2 hours, 19 minutes – but the crowd, almost all women, in the auditorium clearly didn’t care. Playing Eastwood’s mom Kate, Lolita Davidovich has almost nothing to do which is too bad. Then there’s the ending. If you’ve tooled around the Internet much, you have run across the story of the magnificent art collection to be bid upon – but first, the recently deceased seller insists a little-thought of illustration be auctioned off to begin. The trick is that the person who buys the crappy painting gets the entire collection. (See Snopes.com “Dead Son’s Portrait”). That’s what Eastwood does with Alda’s portrait of Chaplin. That twist was so and stereotypical that the Movie Man docked The Longest Ride a point.

BY NATALIE GENTRY Jennifer B. Thoreson is a visual artist who creates staged imagery that is both artistically stylized and meticulously crafted. The daughter of JB and Erma Perry of Springtown, Thoreson holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from the University of New Mexico. She now lives and works in Albuquerque. Thoreson draws inspiration from themes of faith and the intricacy of personal relationships and has been described as a dynamic and emotional illustrator of the human heart. Her spiritual and conservative Springtown upbringing has inspired her imagination which, in turn, allowed her to create intensely personal artwork to bring insight and awareness using heartfelt personal experiences. Thoreson is an international speaker and lecturer whose programs are highly sought after by many professional public and private photographic organizations. She published her first monograph, Medic, in 2012 and has just completed her latest major body of work entitled Testament, a series of 12 images exploring love relationships and heavy burdens – sometimes lit-

Jennifer Thoreson (below) is the daughter of JB and Erma Perry and is a nationally renowned visual artist whose work explores vulnerability and the complexities of human relationships. Photos courtesy Jennifer B. Thoreson lent space just before crossing over. “The people in the photographs are in the final phase of bearing weight, moments away from finally laying it down. I am seeking the moment of relief, and relishing in the moments just before it occurs.” Testament’s photographs are representations of quiet moments of raw humanness – just at the point when renewal begins. Thoreson’s work has been a part of more than 30 exhibitions, has been widely published internationally in many print and online journals, and is represented by three major galleries across the United States.
