Attacker shot dead by Tarrant deputy BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN A man who brutally attacked his younger brother, mother, and grandmother with a knife was shot and killed by a Tarrant County Sheriff’s deputy Monday, June 1, in Timberlake Estates. Kamal Hisham Dajani, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident at 11:41 p.m. according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Dajani’s mother and grandmother were each airlifted to John Peter Smith Hospital for treatment of serious, possibly critical injuries. Dajani’s younger brother sustained less serious injuries; he was transported to a Fort Worth hospital by ground ambulance.

High water closes lake, park BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN Three months ago, many people thought Eagle Mountain Lake might never return to being...well, a lake. A brave person wearing combat boots and carrying a large machete might, after all, have walked from the boat ramp at Oak Harbor Estates, through weeds a couple of stories high, straight across to Pelican Bay. But prayers have been answered, and now the lake overfloweth. At Shady Grove Park Monday evening, June 1, entire families were swimming and picnicking at tables they accessed by wading through calfhigh water. Water was inches from covering the floor of the newly-rebuilt pier next to the park’s boat launch, and almost all boulders around the launch were submerged. City of Azle officials decided to close Shady Grove Park at 8 p.m. that day until flood waters recede. Eagle Mountain Lake was closed May 29 due to high water. On the afternoon of Monday, June 1, the picnic tables at Shady Grove Park PLEASE SEE NO, PAGE 3A. could only be accessed by wading through calf-high water. Officials closed the park.

Library Kicks Off Heroic Reading Clubs
Bridge to close South Stewart St. BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN After 13 years of false starts, it appears that the Texas Department of Transportation will actually begin work to replace the bridge over Ash Creek on South Stewart Street in midJune. A planned start date of June 8 has already been pushed back about a week, and a completion date of November has likewise been adjusted to “early next year.” TxDOT spokesperson Val Lopez indicated the project is imminent, however. To facilitate removal of the existing bridge and construction of a new one, South Stewart Street will be closed to all traffic between the old laundromat to just past Azle Wild West Stables & Arena. As a result, all traffic to points beyond the bridge from Main Street will be detoured to FM 730 South, back to South Stewart Street. Young reader Daniel Cohee joins forces with (l-r) Mia “Batgirl” Gordy, Brittany “Elastigirl” Culver, and While that detour route was decided Averie “Supergirl” Womack on the June 1 blast off day of the Azle Memorial Library’s summer reading by TxDOT, it is supported by the city programs. The “shortcut” to navigate around the bridge reconstruction is discouraged because it winds through several residential streets and presents dangers – from children playing in streets, to 90-degree turns and limited visibility at several intersections. The city first entered into a contract with TxDOT for replacement of the bridge in 2002, after an audit deemed it to be deficient, according to city officials. In the mid-2000s, the two entities entered into another contract for improvements to the Ash Creek channel where it passes beneath South Stewart Street. This time, the project is expected to cost $1.15 million. The new bridge will be lengthened and raised compared to the existing one, and the channel below the bridge will be widened, too. TxDOT awarded the contract to Ragle Construction. Questions should be address to TxDOT at 817-399-4300.

Chad Lorance, communications manager for Tarrant Regional Water District, said June 2 that the latest calculations from that agency’s experts project EML will crest at 651.40 – 2.3 feet above pool elevation – sometime on Wednesday, June 3 before beginning to recede. “Our flood team has been working around the clock since May 11, monitoring weather conditions, rainfall and water levels, and managing the flows coming into and out of the lakes in TRWD’s system,” Lorance said. “They have done an incredible job of managing all
this water and protecting property.” EML was closed to all boat traffic Friday, May 29, as water rose to a level where a simple boat wake could cause certain homes on the lake to become inundated. More than a few have pointed out the irony that lake activities which were impossible because of catastrophic drought a couple of months ago are now prohibited due to flood. Azle man sentenced to 45 years BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN
An Azle man will serve a minimum of 21 years in the state penitentiary after his conviction by a Parker County jury of two counts of aggravated assault of a public servant, evading arrest with a vehicle, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Derek Kyle Auvenshine, 34, was sentenced to 45 years for each of the two assault charges, as well as 35 for the evading charge and 27 years for the firearms charge in a trial that concluded in district court in Weatherford May 29. Assistant District Attorneys Abby Placke and Robert DuBoise tried the case for the prosecution. According to a press release issued by the Parker County District Attorney’s office, on

Jan. 14, 2014, a White Settlement police officer attempted to pull over Auvenshine as he drove his car in Tarrant County. He refused to stop and led officers on a chase westbound on Interstate 30 at speeds of up to 115 mph. Testimony from White Settlement officers along with introduction of their in-car videos into evidence showed that Auvenshine exited Interstate 20 in eastern Parker County on FM 3325 and lost control of his car. After spinning the vehicle around, Auvenshine pointed a gun in the direction of two White Settlement officers. One of the officers fired a series of rifle rounds at Auvenshine in an attempt to end the pursuit. Auvenshine continued driving briefly before losing control

Derek Kyle Auvenshine again, flipping his car and attempting to flee on foot. At trial, one of the White Settlement officers testified that, concerned with the safety of his fellow officers and the general public, he fired three rifle rounds at Auvenshine, striking him at least once. Auvenshine was arrested and
transported for medical care. Jurors deliberated for approximately 90 minutes on Friday before finding Auvenshine guilty of all four charges. During the punishment phase, prosecutors introduced evidence showing that Auvenshine was convicted of delivery of a controlled substance in 2000 and again in 2007. “In the end, Mr. Auvenshine earned the stiff sentences he received because of the complete disregard he showed for the safety of law enforcement officers and the general public,” said Placke. Auvenshine will not be eligible for parole until at least 2036 based upon the sentences he received, which will be served concurrently. Visiting District Judge David Cleveland presided.

Special Education records which have been collected by the Azle Independent School District (AISD) related to the identification, evaluation, educational placement, or the provision of Special Education services in the district, must be maintained under state and federal laws for a period of five years after Special Education services have ended for the student. Special Education services end when the student no longer is eligible for services, graduates, completes his or her educational program at age 22, or moves from the district.
And, when it’s time to unwind, we think you’ll enjoy Eagle Crest Villa’s aviary and gazebo. Or, if you prefer, put your feet up in the comfortable surrounding of your own private apartment — it’s up to you. But regardless of how you like to relax, you can rest assured that whenever you need assistance, our staff of caring professionals is there to help.
This notification is to inform parents/guardians and former students of AISD’s intent to destroy the Special Education records of students who were no longer receiving Special Education services as of the end of the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 school year. These records will be destroyed in accordance with state law unless the parent/guardian or eligible (adult) student notifies the school district otherwise. After five years, the records are no longer useful to the district, but they may be useful to the parent/guardian or former student in applying for Social Security benefits, rehabilitation services, college entrance, etc.
So what are you waiting for? Join us at Eagle Crest Villa Retirement and Assisted Living Community. But hurry! Sunday lunch is best!
The parent/guardian or eligible (adult) student may request a copy of the records in writing or in person at the following address on or before June 9, 2015.

Freak flag flyin’: I feel like I owe it to someone
I
t’s been eight months since I’ve had a haircut. I’m not trying to prove anything. At least initially. I just haven’t ventured to my stylist (which is what you have when your hair grows beyond the collar – you have a barber [or spouse], otherwise). So, since my hair is almost as long as it ever has been – back when I was in college in the mid-1970’s – I’m having hair issues that haven’t cropped up in decades. For one thing, it gets in my eyes. And, I’m getting tangles now. Much to the dismay of the Bride, I often drive with the truck window down (see photo at right). “It’ll ruin the headliner,” she preaches, and, sure enough, it’s separating a bit, something that started at about 300,000 miles. Today, I don’t just immediately
squirt shampoo on my head and commence scrubbing; there’s some smoothing, anti-tangling, and maybe even some conditioning to do first. Oh, sometimes I feel a little goofy, an almost 59-year-old grandpa with wild gray hair hanging down in his face. If I’m at church serving the Lord’s Supper down front before a few hundred folks – in line with 20 other deacons who are all short-haired and/or mostly bald – I feel a tad out of place. But I’m just making up for 19782003 when my jobs – meat truck driver, firefighter – forced me to have trimmed, regulated haircuts. The trick for me lately has been to avoid looking like that grody stringyhaired old fellow with a silver ponytail walking around Walmart. I’m the cool old fellow walking around Walmart.
A w h i l e back, it seemed time to get a haircut. But then q u e e r things began to happen: I started getting compliments – from ON YOUR MARK women Mark K. Campbell and men. “Wow, your hair is thick!” “You don’t even have a bald spot!” “If I could grow my hair like you,
I’d never cut it!” That last one – which I’ve heard more times than you’d imagine – always comes from balding guys, especially the comb-over fellows. Like many things in life, sometimes you don’t know when you’re fortunate; I was blessed with straight teeth and never needed any sort of braces. And my hair is still attached. It’s largely about vanity, of course. Hair is a surprisingly big deal to some guys. Oh, Michael Jordan made the shaved head cool and granted millions of men a degree of hipness. But there’s a reason why the Hair Club for Men infomercials are still running all these years later. Back in those ‘70’s as a freshman at UT-Austin, I went a year without a haircut. It got to the middle of my back, eventually – which my flattopped-for-35-years dad hated.
During that 1974-75 school year, I’d listen to KLBJ-FM, a station that would play anything. That included Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young’s 1970 LP Déjà Vu. On the mega-seller was a song called “Almost Cut My Hair.” Back then, it was a hippie anthem: Almost cut my hair/It happened just the other day/It’s getting’ kinda long/I coulda said it wasn’t in my way./But I didn’t and I wonder why/I feel like letting my freak flag fly/Cause I feel like I owe it to someone. So, today, I’m letting my freak flag fly for those guys who used to have their own freak flags but now only have ripped and torn pennants or dinky flapping ribbons. If that. I feel like I owe it to someone. Mark K. Campbell is the News editor, and he knows the Bride has the final say-so on his hair length, of course.
Letters to the Editor Candidates’ verbal pandering embarassing
Why aren’t we saving all this rainwater?
Dear Editor: Must say the poignant times we live in now days of what is offered to vote for as the leader of the country when we see the shenanigans by these politician candidates to grab the keys to Air Force One for eight years. Case in point: Hillary Clinton in her unsuccessful 2008 presidential bid for the presidency was seen in a black church making a complete fool of herself trying to morph into a black person’s dialect in her speech. She started out by saying and I'll quote in verbatim: “I don't feel no way tired, I come too faaar.” And the rest of the speech is just as silly. Fast forward to 2015 in the Palmetto State of South Carolina this past week. Once again our wannabe commander in chief gal “Hillary” was seen on TV media showing just what a complete phony she really is by changing speech inflections from her Chicago talk to a southern drawl. I kind of expected to see any minute a shot of Hillary jumping up and down with her bare feet, holding a skillet, and channeling Scarlett O'Hara in Gone
Water, lots of water. Not that long ago most of all of North Texas was bone dry, four years in the making. Within two months of off and on rain, the drought is now gone and what’s amazing is it continues to rain. Where is all that run-off going? Our wonderful lake is more than full, and, from time to time, lots of it goes downstream. What happens to the surplus? No back-up ponds, no cisterns to hold water for all the towns and cities when it’s going to go dry again. It always has and will again. Shame on those that can’t save back-up water for the long term.
Fred DeLorge Boyd
Email your letters with the Wind. Well, at least she didn't pull a John Kerry moment into his presidential run some years back when he tried the same spurious goofiness in a pho-
to op in geese hunting in the south, by saying in a southern drawl: “Where kin I git me a hunting license in these parts.” I suppose if there's a harbinger of things to come, next
we'll see Hillary speaking in Chinatown to potential American-Asian voters in a pointy farmers hat and hitting a big gong! The disturbing part of this
is, the Democrats are seen like clapping seals and bidding to be her jesters and shills.

Local history-making WWI pilot training fields: Part 3, where major celebrity Vernon Castle is killed in a crash
T
his column is the third in a series about the three pilot training fields in Tarrant County in World War I. The fields originally created jointly by the Canadians and Americans called Taliaferro No. 1, Taliaferro No. 2, and Taliaferro No. 3 became under the Americans, Taliaferro Field, Barron Field and Carruthers Field. Named after Cadet W. K. Carruthers who died in an airplane accident at Mineola June 18, 1917, some locals called it Camp Benbrook after the James M. Benbrook family who owned land as early as 1876 when Benbrook petitioned the Texas and Pacific Railroad to place a station along Mary's Creek. When built, it became “Benbrook.” Although Lt. Col. Jacob E. Fickel was not the only commander of Carruthers Field, he was the best-known. He was willing to agree to requests that would cement good public relations. When various state fairs requested officers to fly an airplane to a nearby event, Col. Thomas Turner at Barron Field turned down most such
THE
requests, but Col. Fickel didn't. He also patiently answered letters from worried mothers about their sons who hadn't written home. Although Col. Fickel had only been in command at Carruthers since October 22, 1918, he received orders to report to Washington, D. C., which he did on Jan. 24, 1919. He remained in the military and had reached the rank of Brigadier General when he visited Fort Worth in May 1940 with orders to inspect sites appropriate for locating a training base for army pilots. Obviously familiar with Fort Worth, his report on its suitability may have gone a long way in persuading officials to locate a field that during World War II was Fort Worth Army Air Field. Later it became Carswell, AFB, and now is Naval Air Station Fort Worth. Probably the most sensational major story to hit the telegraph wires during World War I in connection with any of the three airfields in Fort Worth occurred February 15, 1918 while the Canadians were still utilizing each of the three fields. British citizen Vernon Castle, who became famous as a dancer with his American wife, Irene,

was killed while serving as an instructor to an American cadet. Born in Norwich, England in 1887, Castle came to the U.S. in 1906 and learned to fly at the Curtiss school in Virginia at his PAGES FROM own expense. Castle was WESTERN a stooge for HISTORY a comic, Lew J’Nell L. Pate Fields, when he met Irene, an actress. They began their dance routine and did a “Texas Tommy” step and their “Castle Walk.” The latter brought them fame in Europe. When they returned to New York, their routines took the country by storm, including a “Castle Tango.” When World War I erupted, Castle felt his flying ability would be of use and volunteered with the Royal Flying Corps. After a tour in Europe, he was sent to Canada to train Publisher Kim Ware

pilots and became a part of the Canadian movement to Fort Worth. He was in Fort Worth only five months, from September, 1917 until his death the next February. The handsome Castle, tall, slim and blond, had a friendly personality and generous, gentlemanly nature. While in Fort Worth he made himself available to the community. On November 17, 1917 he danced at River Crest Country Club to help them raise money. Another appearance at the Metropolitan Hotel “Assembly” function raised $997 for a hospital. In fact, he was a frequent guest at the Metropolitan for carefully chaperoned dances for young debutants and soldiers. At Christmastime 1917 he gave a party for soldiers at the hotel. A Canadian who learned to fly with Castle, Harry Bruno, said that Castle flew up front in the two-seater training airplane (one seat behind the other) because it was the more dangerous position and he didn't want to endanger the student. The accident that took his life resulted when he and the student pilot were coming in for a landing, but Castle had to pull the plane up sharply

to avoid colliding with another plane flown by an American student that flew right in front of him. Castle's airplane stalled, clung to the sky for a second, and then slammed into the ground from 40 feet in the air. He died instantly, his head crushed, and his arms and legs broken. He was 31. The cadet in the back seat was not injured much at all. Castle's coffin, draped with the British flag, was pulled by an artillery caisson drawn by six horses, with an honor guard, to the T & P train station to travel to New York for his funeral the next day. In 1939 a movie premiered in Fort Worth at the Worth Theatre entitled The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle, starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. A masonry memorial topped by a model of a “Jenny” aircraft like the one Castle flew was dedicated in 1966 at the corner of Vernon Castle Blvd. and Cosby Street N. in Benbrook near the spot where he died. Retired history professor J’Nell Pate of Azle has authored several books, many of which are on sale in the lobby of the Azle News.

F What to do with criticism

worldclass, i f therewerea-PhDin-criticismtheywouldhave-it critics. Y o u LIFE MATTERS p r o b a b l y Gerry Lewis k n o w some of them. They consider it their duty to point out everything that is wrong in the world. They tend to be unhappy joy suckers who can’t stand it if everyone is not as miserable as they are. Their words sting, but don’t take it personally. However, if the criticism comes from a generally joyful person who is typically on your side, then you may want to pay more attention. Acknowledge the truth – No matter the source, something was the trigger for this particular criticism. My critics have never been 100 percent wrong. There is always room for growth. There is always an opportunity to learn. In fact, compliments have never moti-
ou never should have been called as pastor of this church.” Those words were spoken to me over 20 years ago, but they still sting when I think about one of the most painful conversations I had in my 20 years as a pastor. In my current ministry consulting, coaching, and supporting pastors and churches, I have heard reports of variations on that theme more often than I would like to acknowledge. Here’s a true statement that you can write down and take to the bank: No matter what your vocation is, you WILL BE criticized at some point. I shared a quote last week from Mason Cooley: “We are prepared for insults, but compliments leave us baffled.” I think the meaning of that is that we expect to be insulted, not complimented. The reality of insults (or criticism) is what we are prepared for. But how to respond to them? Well, that’s another story. So, what do we do with insults or criticism? Let me offer a few suggestions that have proven helpful to me over the years: Consider the source – I have been criticized by professional,
vated me to learn anything new. Even our biggest fans only help us grow when they challenge us. Avoid isolation – It is a bad idea to keep it to yourself. You’ll stew in it. You’ll go over it in your mind and think of all the things you wish you had said in response. You’ll believe too much or too little of it. And you will risk becoming bitter. I believe that everyone needs a small group of close friends who can help us process criticisms. I’m not talking about a group of blindly loyal fans. I’m talking about people who can help us with perspective. Ideally this group is getting together regularly to help one another grow and develop the kind of character we want to demonstrate in life. Model right behavior – Don’t respond in kind. Be the kind of person you want to be around. As Jesus said, “Treat others the way you want to be treated.” (Matthew 7:12) Our lives matter to God. May our responses to criticism speak louder than the words of our critics. our days before the June 1 end of the 84th regular session of the Texas Legislature, both houses finally agreed after months of deliberation on a state budget for fiscal years 2016 and 2017. A 10-member conference committee worked out differences between the House and Senate versions of the budget. The House vote on final adoption of House Bill 1 was 115 ayes to 33 nays; the Senate vote was 30-1. HB 1 awaits approval by Gov. Greg Abbott. House Speaker Joe Straus called the $209.4 billion budget “balanced and disciplined.” Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who presides over the Senate, praised the budget and the $3.8 billion tax cut the conservative budget affords. The two biggest funding areas in the budget are $78 billion for education and $77 billion for health and human services. Straus posted comments, paraphrased here, on priorities HB 1 addresses: 1. Education – The budget pays for the addition of roughly 80,000 new students per year in the state’s overall public school enrollment. Also provided is an additional $1.5 billion for public education. More resources will go toward higher education, graduate medical education and TEXAS Grants, the state’s signature financial aid program. 2. Transportation – Reversing a decades-old practice, all of the money in the State Highway Fund must be used for transportation. Diversion of some of those dollars for other programs will not be allowed. The transportation budget is augmented by oil-and-gas tax revenues through a constitutional amendment approved by voters in November 2014. 3. Transparency – Taxes and fees must be used only for their intended purpose. 4. Border Security – Some $840 million of the budget will be used for the implementation of HB 11, the border security

Aledo ends Azle’s Final Four dream again Storm postpones game 1 then goes extra innings by mark k. campbell So close and yet so far. Again. The Lady Hornet softball season ended at the Brock High School diamond when Aledo won the regional finals best-ofthree series 2-0. The series was moved from Chisholm Trail HS because of the daily rainstorms that hammered the area most of May. On Thursday evening, May 28, the stands were stuffed to overflowing as the teams squared off – despite a storm bearing down from the west. Aledo scored in the first inning. Azle pitcher Samantha Bradley tied the game in the top of the second with a mammoth home run into the wind to dead center field. From there, the Lady Hornet defense and key pitching from Bradley kept the Ladycats stranding runners for several innings. Finally, after a cooling downdraft, a major storm arrived and the game was postponed with Aledo batting with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Everyone evacuated then returned the next day to complete game one. In the sixth inning, a running Regional finals action: (clockwise from above) Lady Hornet pitcher Samantha Bradley was also stellar at the catch in foul left field territory plate throughout the entire playoff run; third baseman Sarah Brown reaches for a ball that came a hair too late to by Katelyn Harris ended a firstput out a Ladycat; the storm that arrived at Brock High School May 28 was a huge one that forced the postpone- and-third threat by Aledo. eighth, Azle took a 2-1 lead when Bailee Carter singled home Raelyn Temple who slid safely into home. The Lady Hornets were three outs from winning game one. But the Ladycats tied it and only a great play at second base by Sammi Tittle kept the game alive. Then a stunning 5-2-6 double play – started by Sarah Brown at third base who threw home to catcher Bethanie Phillips for one out then back to third to shortstop Carter – saved the day. Azle stranded a runner in the ninth inning. Then Aledo won the game with a 2-run homer. Azle Coach Tracy Tadlock said, “We had a good opportunity to win game one and just could not finish them off. That is why they are the No. 1 team in the state – they find ways to win.” Game two followed Saturday, May 31. The Ladycats scored 5 runs in the first inning. Solo homers by Carter and Brown drew Azle to within 5-2. However, Aledo got a 3-run home run and Azle never got closer, losing 8-3. Tadlock said, “We played well against Aledo, but with a team as deep and experienced as they are, we needed to play mistake free. We did not do that.” And another sterling Azle season ended just shy of its goal.

Azle News Wednesday, June 3, 2015
San Andreas shakes out disaster movie cliches Theses days, disaster movies show up occasionally. Some hit, some miss. But the heyday of the genre was back in the 1970’s when the template was set. About the film The granddaddy of disaster movies is The Poseidon Adventure (1972). (Well, the first great disaster movie was When Worlds Collide in 1951, but the genre really arrived during America’s greatest movie decade, the 1970’s.) People – including Movie Teen – poured into theaters to marvel at the giant cruise liner Poseidon turning upside down. Before that happened, characters played by famous stars like Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, and Shelly Winters (who got an Oscar nomination) were introduced then forced to survive together. The best disaster movie of all-time remains The Towering Inferno in 1974. It had bona fide stars – Steve McQueen and Paul Newman – as well as super effects. There were so many characters that, for years, the running joke about the movie was what happened to O.J. Simpson (yes, O.J. Simpson)? He was a major part of the movie early on then disappears until the very end – carrying a cat! The third memorable movie from the disaster film’s Golden Age was Earthquake also from 1974. The Movie Man queued up quite a while to finally get a ticket. (In those days, it wasn’t unusual to stand in line for hours outside a theater before entry.) Earthquake was not only a disaster movie, but one with a unique gimmick, Sensurround. The movie isn’t very good, really, but having Sensurround made all the difference. After the build-up to the quake – that included a few short shakes, early – when the real deal came along, the theater and your seat literally shook from a relentless series of low frequency rumbles from speakers set up strategically around the audito-
rium. It was a blast! Only a few more movies with the process were released; it was too expensive for theaters to use often. Midway (1976) was good then came the misfire Rollercoaster (1977). Sensurround went away after being used in the theatrical premier of TV’s first go-round with Battlestar Galactica (1978), Saga of a Star World. The plot Ray (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) is a Los Angeles Fire Department rescue helicopter pilot. His daughter Blake (Alexandra Daddario) is bound for college. They meet Johnson’s wife Emma (Carla Gugino) who is soon to divorce Johnson and marry Daniel (Ioan Gruffudd). Meanwhile, brainy Professor Lawrence (Paul Giamatti) and his team have finally figured out how to predict earthquakes – their final proof coming from evidence gained when a massive tremor destroys the Hoover Dam in Nevada. Soon, The Rock is pressed into hero service as a monster quake heads up the West Coast toward San Francisco. He saves Gugino then they venture to San Fran to fetch the imperiled Daddario. Along the way are fissures, falling skyscrapers, and a big honkin’ tsunami.

What works (spoiler) The Movie Man has a man crush on Johnson. He looks like a hero and his witty banter is flat-out fun. He’s a movie star. Giamatti is another guy who never seems to do anything wrong. He spews his scholarly babble effortlessly. The opening scene made the Movie Man think there might be more to San Andreas. A young lady drives on a windy California mountain road. She reaches for her phone and music, taking her eyes off the road, and you’re fooled into thinking that she’s about to crash into approaching cars. But that doesn’t happen. Instead, she’s creamed by a rockslide that knocks her off a cliff. That’s where The

Decades of loving service Eagle Crest Villa director Dorothy Cherryhomes retires BY MISTY SHAW For the last four decades, local resident Dorothy Cherryhomes has worked in the same little corner of town. “I’ve been coming down the same street to work for 45 years,” Cherryhomes said. She’s been the director at Azle’s assisted living facility -- Eagle Crest Villa -- since the doors opened there in June of 1998. Before that, she worked at a clinic across the street. But now, after many years of dedicated service to others, Cherryhomes says she is ready for the next phase of her life, having retired from Eagle Crest Villa last week. “I’m 77 years old, and there just comes a time when you need a change,” she said. “I’m going to miss it – I’m going to miss it dreadfully.”
little easier for them to make the transition from home,” she said. A home away from home Since then, Cherryhomes and her staff have worked hard to improve the lives of Eagle Crest’s residents. “It’s been fun to watch this change and grow – we kind of learned along with the residents,” Cherryhomes recalls. “My main objective was for this to be a home, and not just in their apartments, but when they come in the front door, that this whole facility is home, and they feel the love of it being a home.” Eagle Crest Villa is the only assisted living facility of its size in this area, housing residents from as close as Springtown and as far as Michigan. “It’s been pleasurable, and it’s been a challenge,” Cher-

New beginnings Cherryhomes and her husband, Paul, "have lived here in Azle for 44 years, in the same house,” where they moved from Graham in 1970. At that time, Cherryhomes began working as the office manager for a local doctor’s clinic, a position she held for 28 years until the practice was sold. Fortunately, plans were already in place to open Eagle Crest Villa across the street, so Cherryhomes decided to apply there. Thank You Eagle Crest Villa, Staff and Residents for making my retirement a time of celebration. You made a sad time one of fun and love. I appreciate all of the friends and family members of present and past who attended. All the Eagle Crest family became my extended family and I love each and every one. I want to thank the Montgomery family for giving me the opportunity to work in an environment that allowed me to make Eagle Crest a home built with love for the people who chose to live there. A very special thank you to the wonderful people who are the staff who have worked so hard and been so supportive through the years. I appreciate each of you more than I am able to express. I also want to thank my own family for sharing my time and love with my Eagle Crest family with their love and support. God Bless Heather Holman as she becomes the Administrator of this wonderful facility. She will keep Eagle Crest a loving home for it’s residents and future residents. With respect and love, Dorothy Cherryhomes

Industrial and construction workers, along with their families (second hand exposure) are among those at risk for mesothelioma, lung cancer or gastro cancer (throat, stomach, colon).
