BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN A 33-year-old Azle woman has been arrested and charged with the sexual assault of a child. Ashley Adams Whited was arrested July 9 on an Azle Police Department warrant after an investigation found evidence of the sexual assault. According to Azle PD detective Sgt. Kevin Rogers, Whited was allegedly involved in a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old boy that apparently began in November 2014 and continued until the situation was reported to po- If you’ve been in Central Park since the big spring rains – maybe for Music in the Park or just for fun – you’ve noticed the playground is lice in June. sealed off. BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN Azle police have solved at least six burglaries with the arrest of one man. Aaron Matthew Sams, 21, of Azle, was initially arrested July 5 in the 600 block of Southeast Parkway and charged with public intoxication. He received a citation and was released from the Azle jail the morning of July 6. Azle PD detective Sgt. Kevin Rogers said Azle patrol officers arrested Sams again before noon – mere hours after he
was released from jail – after observing him in the act of committing a burglary in the 1300 block of Southeast Parkway. “Through follow-ups and interviews, we discovered evidence that connects (Sams) to at least six burglaries, all along Southeast Parkway,” Rogers said. “Now we are looking at other burglaries around Azle to determine if he is connected to any of them, as well.” Building and vehicle burglaries Sams has been tied to so far occurred at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Aqualine
Pools, Waldrop Furniture, and Head Start, all on Southeast Parkway. Sams has been charged with the burglary officers observed and remained in the Tarrant County jail in lieu of $4,000 bond Monday, July 20. Investigators are working on additional warrants against Sams, and expect him to be charged in several other cases. Anyone with information about Sams is asked to contact Rogers at 817-4443221 or krogers@ci.azle.tx.us.

AISD hires new MGP director Delgado crossing the lake from Boswell HS BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN The recent departure of three directors of Azle High School’s Marching Green Pride generated a flurry of applicants from far and wide, and Azle Independent School District officials said they felt sure they’d find “the right people to fill the positions.” During its regular meeting Monday, July 20, trustees voted to approve Superintendent Ray Lea’s recommendation to hire Dimas Delgado to be the director of the MGP. Delgado hails from the east side of Eagle Mountain Lake, where he’s been assistant director of Boswell High School’s band program for 10 years. “We are very excited to have Mr. Delgado lead our band – he brings proven championship experience to
the Azle band program,” said Tanya Anderson, AISD assistant superintendent. “His vast experience in both marching and jazz will make him a huge asset to the Azle ISD family.” Anderson added that she believes students, parents, and the entire community will welcome Delgado and support him fully. Two assistant director positions are expected to be filled by the end of the week, Anderson said. Delgado will be involved in deciding who those assistants will be, she said. Originally from San Antonio, Delgado earned a bachelor’s degree in music from Texas Tech as well as a master’s degree in education from the University of North Texas. He’ll begin his 17th year in teaching at AHS and says he is fortunate to
have encountered lots of success since he began teaching at the high school level in 1999. His first experience marching came in 1990, Delgado says, and he’s been marching ever since. He began his teaching career at a Dallas high school before moving to Arlington High, where he taught marching band for four years. The last 10 years – spent at Azle High School’s arch-rival and foe in the annual “Take The Lake” football game – have proven a “fruitful experience,” Delgado said. “Boswell competes at a world class level with its drum and bugle corps, and the jazz program there is an honor group that consistently places at all

The other two portables are off to the Instructional Support Center for the Hornet Academy campus. The ISC itself is receiving a substantial overhaul. The building is getting a more professional look – for board meetings and staff developments, Smith said. The ICS will have a raised floor for its new board table, storage rooms, televisions mounted on the ceiling, new carpeting, and additional parking. At Azle Elementary, the air-conditioning replacement schedule begun last summer is being finished now. A new door/window installation at Hoover Elementary will offer a better view of its entryway and make the campus safer, Smith noted. Walnut Creek Elementary and Silver Creek are receiving new roofs on some wings. And, Smith said, several campuses are getting new paint inside and out. CAMPBELL The Azle Independent School District is overseeing several projects on numerous campuses this summer. The high school is exceptionally abuzz with activity. The major work is being done on the ever-rising Career and Technology Education center (CTE) and the new competition gym.
The CTE projected ready date is Aug. 16. The gym is expected to be finished by the middle of September. Inside AHS, the aged auditorium is undergoing a major renovation. Every seat has been replaced, there is new carpet, the ceiling and walls have been painted, and new LED lighting has been installed, noted Todd Smith,
AISD director of operations. Over at Hornet Field, construction continues on a new ticket gate and a remodel of the concession stand. Pillars are also being erected around the facility. Three AHS portable buildings are bound for new campuses. One is headed for Silver Creek Elementary for extra
Lakeside officer lauded for actions in near-drowning BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN
A Lakeside police officer was honored with a Lifesaving Award July 9 during the town council meeting. Officer Jennifer Bond was on routine patrol on Friday, July 4, 2014, when she heard Tarrant County Sheriff’s deputies and first responders from Lake Worth Fire Department being dispatched to the 7000 block of Hardnose Lane in the Turtle Creek Estates subdivision. The call was the possible drowning of a child. Bond realized she was only about 30 seconds away from the location, where a 9-year-old girl had been found at the bottom of a swimming pool, so she immediately responded. Arriving before deputies, Bond learned the girl had been under water for as long as five minutes. She had been pulled from the pool by the time Bond
arrived, but was not breathing. In fact, the child’s lips had begun to turn blue. Bond immediately began efforts to revive the girl by performing CPR. Tarrant County Sheriff’s deputy Andre Caracciolo arrived soon after and discovered the child’s airway was blocked. He and Bond worked to clear her airway, and the girl began breathe, crying and screaming. Both Bond and Caracciolo stayed with the victim until EMS arrived to take over her medical care. Lakeside Mayor Pat Jacob and Police Chief Lee Pitts presented Bond with the Lifesaving Award on behalf of the Lakeside town council, noting the officer’s professionalism, initiative, and diligence in helping to prevent a tragedy that could have resulted in the loss of a child’s life.

BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN A 19-year-old Fort Worth man died in the early hours of July 15 in a one vehicle accident that resulted in a raging fire. Ryan Nicolas Hoehn was westbound in the 9300 block of Ten Mile Bridge Road about 2 a.m. when the green Ford Taurus he was driving went off the roadway into the bar ditch. Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Terry Grisham said the final investigative report was not yet complete July 20. However, based on paint markings applied by investigators at the scene and a witness, it appears Hoehn’s vehicle struck a culvert and flipped upside down, coming to rest on its top against a large tree. That witness believes Hoehn was trapped inside the car, which then began to burn. Several people watched helplessly as the Taurus became an inferno.
Grisham said Sheriff’s deputies arrived within five minutes of the first 911 call to find the vehicle and a tree fully engulfed in flames. As additional deputies arrived, they emptied at least five hand-held fire extinguishers carried in their patrol units onto the flames to no avail. “The fire was just too intense – no one could get near it,” Grisham said. He indicated that gasoline from the vehicle’s tank fueled the blaze. The Azle Fire Department, including medics, responded to the scene to assist Fort Worth Fire and MedStar with the horrific incident. Ten Mile Bridge Road was closed until after daybreak as investigators gathered evidence. A GoFundMe account has been set up in Hoehn’s name to help pay for expenses. You can contribute by going to http:// www.gofundme.com/zm2tyzk.
Texas sales tax holiday Aug. 7-9 A sure sign school is about to start again: the annual Texas Sales Tax Holiday. This year, it’s being held across the state Aug. 7-9, and smart shoppers can realize big savings on certain items priced under $100. The law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies, and backpacks priced under $100 from sales tax, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend during the weekend. “As the father of three young children, I know back-toschool expenses can really put
a strain on family budgets this time of year,” Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar said. “This is an opportunity for families to save some money and prepare for the start of the school year.” Lists of apparel and school supplies that may be purchased tax-free can be found on the Comptroller’s website at TexasTaxHoliday.org. This year, shoppers will save an estimated $87 million in state and local sales taxes during the sales tax holiday. The tax holiday weekend has been an annual event since 1999.

Clients can give Classic Pest Control feedback online and, if there’s any kind of problem, they jump right on it. Not too chicken to rage against popular opinion
T
hey seemed like the kind of places I’d like – not hoity-toity restaurants but good ol’ rib stickin’ cookin’ joints. They both got plenty of chances, yet return visits to a couple of popular restaurants once again raised a mystery: Why are they so popular? First: How in the world is Babe’s Chicken Dinner House so beloved? I’ve eaten there and had it catered. Masses of salivating people queue up regularly just to get inside the place. Then the food arrives and...meh. This most recent outing was completely forgettable. I’d had the fried chicken enough to make me switch over to the smoked yard bird. Pieces came out heaped on a plate

tab and we had brought our own dessert. I’m sure Babe’s is an upstanding business that loves Jesus and supports charities, but I ain’t going back for a while. The second eatery that mystifies me when it comes to its popularity is Fuzzy’s Taco Shop. Fish tacos sound like the greatest idea ever. The Bride makes them at home, stuffed with wonderfully spiced snapper or talapia. The first time I bought a fish taco at Fuzzy’s, I literally thought there was an error with my order – that they had forgotten to put the fish in the taco. I took it back. But they assured me there was yummy fish way down on the bottom, between the chunks of cheese and cabbage. I ate it but never felt I got a bite of actual fish. Perhaps I
was eating fish-flavored feta. I’ve tried other offerings at Fuzzy’s. And I’ve never had anything that I pondered with great desire all day, anxious at the chance to rush off to get it for lunch or supper. Of course, it’s easy to complain. So I’ll finish with a tale about a scrumptious eating outing – liver at Luby’s Cafeteria. (Yes, there are still some Luby’s around, and, yes, I get the irony that I’m a finicky eater and enjoy liver [but not the onions – gross].) It was fantastic and so were the butter beans. So, to review – chicken: no; fish tacos: no; liver: yes. Mark K. Campbell is the News editor and is pretty sure Babe’s and Fuzzy’s won’t be advertising with us in the near future.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Truth of Civil War being kept from Texas students Dear Editor, In light of the recent massacre of black churchgoers by a white supremacist man in Charleston, South Carolina, the subject of the Civil War has been a topic of discussion again as it has been many times since that war ended. In 2010, the Texas State Board of Education Republican members – nine of them – outvoted the five Democratic members to approve changes to ex-
clude information on Jim Crow laws perpetuating slavery and to exclude any mention of the Ku Klux Klan. (At this time, a TEA review indicates that some publishers on the approved textbook list are still including those subjects, thank goodness.) One current SBOE member claims that the Civil War was about states’ rights. Historians say the only “right” the Southern states fought for was slavery. SMU historian Edward Countryman concluded that calling the Civil War a conflict over states’ rights is a revision of history which Confederate leaders began pushing after the war. Caleb McDaniel, history profes-
sor at Rice University, contends that for the SBOE to push states’ rights as the cause of the Civil War instead of slavery is to oversimplify the facts. He emphasizes the necessity and relevance that “we get history right.” Though slavery wasn’t the only reason for the war that took over 600,000 lives, it certainly was the most important reason. The school children of Texas deserve to know all the facts about the Civil War. (Information for this letter came from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.) Judy B. Beeman Weatherford
Early 20th century Homestead Act attracts spinster
F
olks may be aware of the 1862 Homestead Act which promised 160 acres of land free to families who would build a house, grow crops and live on the land for five years. Unfortunately, fertile areas in the West filled up rapidly, and families claimed 160 acres in leftover sites that would grow very little. The government altered the law – 47 years later – by the Enlarged Homestead Act of 1909 that increased the acreage to 320 per family. Railroad builder James J. Hill sought customers for his Great Northern line, and helped settle Montana with cheap loans and reasonable travel rates. He sent recruiters to the East, bragging about fertile land. In reality, newcomers faced blizzards, grasshoppers destroying crops, prairie fires and drought. In addition was loneliness. In 1912 the law reduced the time to “prove up” land to only three years. These changes attracted a woman, who in 1913 at age 30 was considered a hopeless spinster. The life of Clara Miller in Minnesota was difficult where her father had homesteaded.
THE
She did men's work in the fields with her bachelor brothers. To escape the farm she moved to Minneapolis where her older sister Emma was a teacher. In a newspaper Clara read about free homestead land in Montana. Her family was appalled at her decision to go alone. They offered to buy her share of the family farm if she settled near a cousin in Montana. “Near her cousin” was eight miles out from a town and seven miles from him. She worked hard planting crops, but lack of rain destroyed them. A prairie fire swept her land the next season. Her cousin helped her buy two horses and a wagon, but she couldn't hitch them up alone. A man offering land within a mile of town swindled her out of the last of her money from her family. Broke, she got a job during the winter in a town called Browning, working at a mercantile store. There she met a man who did not farm but raised cattle, and during each summer cut logs to sell. He owned land near Glacier National Park. A widower, Glenn C. Smiley was letting his mother-inlaw back in Iowa raise his four children. She and Glenn married in 1915,

They when PAGES FROM prospered Glenn opened WESTERN a store, the Glacier Cash HISTORY Grocery, with J’Nell L. Pate living quarters and extra rooms to rent out. Clara baked tasty pies (30 cents each), donuts (35 cents a dozen), and raised garden vegetables to sell. Glenn sold meat and other items he ordered that arrived by train. He was an astute businessman, offering no credit, and room rent must be paid on time. If someone was down on his luck, Glenn would feed him, but hustle him out to the woodpile to chop wood. As more tourists came to Glacier Park, the economy boomed, and Glenn and Clara Smiley did well. They had two children, Glenn Jr. and Melina. Good times don't always last. In the fall of 1928, Glenn died of pneumonia at age 56. Clara could not run the business alone, so she took the children to her family in Minnesota the next summer to start school. She came back to Glacier Park to sell out, with plans to buy a farm near her family. Unfortunately, Black Friday, October 29, 1929 changed things. The man who had promised to purchase her business and land lost everything. She had to stay to hold on to her property. She had no money to buy chickens to raise or seed to plant a garden, so she hired herself out as a cook on ranches at either a dollar a day or three dollars a week. A job at $20 a month with room and board was best. With no money, she couldn't visit her children, although she sent what she could for their support. When she finally moved back to Glacier Park, vandals had messed up the building, but she cleaned it up. After eight

years, Glenn, Jr. and Melina came out, but there was no work; Clara was living in poverty. She had written stories for years, but couldn't sell them. Melina won a scholarship back in Minnesota to college, and returned there. Glenn, Jr. married and eventually bought a gas station in Glacier Park. He helped his mother market her produce and eggs. When Clara was 81 in 1964, the Great Falls Tribune published an article she wrote; she was paid $8. She died in a nursing home December 28, 1965. Not everyone who homesteaded in the West did well financially, but Clara Miller Smiley proved that even a spinster with an adventurous spirit could make a life for herself. The building that was “Glacier Cash Grocery” still stands, but the owners sell pottery, art, and rent out rooms. This story comes from B. L. Wettstein's book Dream Chasers of the West. Retired history professor J’Nell Pate of Azle has authored several books, many of which are on sale in the lobby of the Azle News.

ov. Greg Abbott on July 18 authorized Adjutant General John Nichols of the Texas National Guard to arm personnel at military facilities across Texas. Abbott’s action comes following the July 16 shooting on two military facilities in Chattanooga, Tenn., that resulted in the deaths of four U.S. Marines and one U.S. Navy sailor. A suspect was killed at the scene. An investigation is in progress. “It is with a heavy heart that I issue this order,” Abbott said. “After the recent shooting in Chattanooga, it has become clear that our military personnel must have the ability to defend themselves against these type of attacks on our own soil. “Arming the National Guard at these bases will not only serve as a deterrent to anyone wishing to do harm to our service men and women, but will enable them to protect those living and working on the base.” Texas Army National Guard, Texas Air National Guard and Texas State Guard, referred to

I urge Mexico to pursue and hold responsible those who aided in the escape and move swiftly to bring El Chapo back into custody.

This is another step in a case brought by Texas and 26 other states who are challenging President Obama’s November 2014 executive order allowing an estimated 4 million undocumented residents to remain in the country and offer them a path to citizenship. Texas Solicitor General Scott Keller argued for the states. On May 26, the Fifth Circuit denied the Obama Administration’s request to begin implementing the order after the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas granted a preliminary injunction on Feb. 16, halting the president’s executive action on immigration from taking effect. LETTER TO THE EDITOR A plea to honor roadside memorial items
The words have long since disappeared, but those words are still important to the one who wrote them. Balloons have been tied to the crosses on their birthdays, flowers have been laid at them on the anniversary, lights have been added to chase away the darkness and numerous remembrances have been placed by those who knew and loved the boys and their family. Having the memorial honoring the boys has been a comfort to the Lunsford family. The memorial has been a visible assurance that Matthew and Brandyn have not been forgotten. A week or so ago, the crosses, flower wreaths, and teddy bears disappeared from Matthew and Brandyn’s memorial. Perhaps it was a prank or a dare. Perhaps it was a troubled
Dear Editor, Many people remember Matthew and Brandyn Lunsford who tragically died in a car accident on Jacksboro Highway. This August will mark the tenth anniversary of their deaths. Within days of the accident two crosses were placed on the highway at the wreck site to honor the memory of Matthew and Brandyn. Not long after that flower wreaths and teddy bears were placed on the crosses. On the first anniversary someone placed curved stones around the crosses and wrote a message to the boys on them.
soul who couldn’t bear to see another cross on the road. The motive doesn’t matter. What matters is what the memorial means to the Lunsford family and friends. What matters is what all the memorials on the highway mean to each and every person who grieves for the loss of their loved ones. When you pass a memorial on the highway, please say a prayer for the families. Please say a prayer for all who have been affected by the tragedy that the memorial marks. Someone’s heart has been broken by something that happened on that spot. Please respect and honor what those memorials represent. Debbie Wheeler Azle

naments during the season. State tournament sites have not been determined but the dates are set: April 25-29. Football A pilot program in 6A will allow the higher seed in the first round of the playoffs to be the home team. With occasional exceptions, UIL football follows NCAA rules. These are UIL alterations: Illegal equipment. If an official discovers illegal equipment, the player must leave the game for at least one down and may not return until the equipment is made legal. If equipment becomes illegal during the course of a play, the
athlete does not have to leave the game but cannot play until the equipment is made legal again. Pregame warm-ups. In the regular season, teams may have access to the playing field up to 22 minutes before the opening kickoff. Written mutual agreement from both teams can change this time. Unsportsmanlike conduct. After the ball is dead, it is a foul to use forcible contact to push or pull a player off a pile. Game administration interference. Penalties are now: First infraction – sideline warning, no yardage penalty. Second and infractions – “delay of game” and a 5-yard pen-
alty from the “succeeding spot” Fourth and up infractions – “unsportsmanlike conduct” and 15-yards from “succeeding spot” and automatic first down. Goal post regulations. Uprights are recommended to be 30 feet high; 20 feet is mandatory. Above the crossbar, uprights will be painted white or yellow and be 23 feet, 4 inches apart. However, when playing on collegiate gridirons, if both coaches agree, the 18-6 separation is permitted. Equipment. Knee pads must be at least 1/2-inch thick and cover the knee. Uniforms. All players must wear socks/ leg coverings that are identical in color and design; players may wear white sweat socks. Jerseys must come to the top of the waist and cover all pads. Officials will charge a team with a timeout at the start of each quarter if illegal jerseys are worn. Towels may not contain numbers. Kicking. On place kicks, the tee must not elevate the ball more than two inches above the ground. Timekeeping. If a visual clock is available – they are not mandatory – the clock must count down from 40 and 25 seconds. A “game clock” is any device used by the appropriate official to time 48 minutes. In overtime, officials will toss the coin before both head coaches with the visiting team calling the toss. Initiating and targeting contact with the crown of the helmet. The player is disqualified for the rest of the game. Fighting. No one may leave the “team area” during a fight except for a “peacemaker” coach designated by the head coach. Such peacemakers are strongly recommended to contact only their own players in attempts to stop a fight.

Movie Man
Azle News Wednesday, July 22, 2015
Ant-Man tunnels its way into Marvel pantheon Marvel Comics has mined its catalogue for its most popular heroes: Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, The Incredible Hulk, XMen, and the Avengers all have made a ton of cash. (It looks like the upcoming FF is going to be much better than its predecessors.) Iron Man (2008, Movie Man No. 771, an 8, Best of Year) – still the top Marvel movie for the Movie Man – was a second tier character, much like this week’s Ant-Man. About the film (spoiler) Comic nerds know that AntMan was actually an original Avenger. And it was super scientist Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) – the original AntMan – who created Ultron, the villain in the current Avengers’ hit, not Tony Stark. But, of course, external sources and their movies seldom match. DC Comics is making a big push to catch up with Marvel on the big screen. Like Marvel, DC is lining up a series of movies that will cross over and occasionally merge. Marvel’s “phases” are well publicized. DC is betting the ranch on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. With its wizened, older Batman (Ben Affleck) and younger Superman (Henry Cavill returning from Man of Steel [2013, MM #1040, 7]), plus an appearance by the new Wonder Woman (Gal Godot), the Flash (Ezra Miller), and even Aquaman (Jason Momoa), it’s clear DC is heading toward its own Avengers – The Justice League of America. The first Justice League is set for Nov. 17, 2017 and Part 2 arrives June 14, 2019. FYI: Thre are two stingers in Ant-Man. The first is Dr. Pym’s daughter Hope (Evangeline Lily) finally getting a chance to be the new Wasp. (The original, Pym’s wife, went missing years ago saving the world.) The second stinger requires a memory jolt and is more of a bona fide set-up for another Marvel movie. The Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Captain America (Chris Evans) discuss
how to protect Bucky (“the Winter Soldier,” Sabatien Stan). The plot Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) is a genius cat burglar whose imprisonment cost him time with his young daughter. Out of the slammer, he tries to go straight. But, no one will hire an ex-con, so he agrees with his low-rent criminal pals to break into a rich man’s safe. That wealthy guy is Dr. Hank Pym who is at odds with former protégé Cross (Corey Stoll) who is on the verge of recreating the “Pym particle” that allows humans to shrink thereby becoming formidable weapons, potentially. Pym’s daughter Hope is undercover as Cross’ right hand woman and there to help her dad stop Cross. But Pym needs a way to enter the super high tech security of Cross’ lab. So Pym trains Rudd – much to the disdain of Hope who wants to be the infiltrator wearing Pym’s super suit that allows him to not only shrink and return to human form in the blink of an eye but gives the wearer dominion over ants. The master plan created by the good guys eventually needs some more help and Lang’s old goofy gang is recruited. In the end, Lang as Ant-Man and Cross as Yellowjacket – the name for his super suit – fight to keep Cross from selling the

Rudd has a cocky yet casual demeanor who knows scene is the excellent use of commanding ants is kinda dumb 3-D. Things get psychedelic but kinda cool, too. He’s good. and mind-bending and that’s And so is Douglas as Pym, just what the process excels at. Stoll as the bad guy, and, especially, Michael Pena as funny Best scene Ant-Man is fighting the Yelgang member Luis. Lily, so glum early, isn’t that lowjacket. They fall into the great in the beginning, but she backyard pool of a family grillrises and, by the time of the stinger, it’s believable that she could be the next Wasp. What makes Ant-Man so different is that it’s more of a character study than a comic book action movie. It takes half an hour to get into the suit then there’s ample training for many more minutes.
Summing up Ant-Man fits in with the Marvel pantheon. Fans of second tier comics afraid the movie would fail have no reason to get antsy. (Just one ant joke from the Movie Man; you’re welcome.)

What doesn’t work There are times when the film is too slow. And, like Marvel movies often are, it’s too long. While it was refreshing not to suffer through superheroes throwing each other through skyscrapers endlessly (looking at you, Man of Steel), a little more action would’ve broken up some lengthy exposition. An Avenger shows up in the only other action scene. (Don’t get too excited – it’s not a top tier Avenger). The Movie Man was hoping there would be more laughs. Rudd has his one-liners – where Marvel is much more fun than the ultra-serious DC – and Douglas snaps a couple off, but, overall, it’s not as funny as you’d think. The trio of Rudd’s often-in-

Hale headed for the Hall
Former Azle coach picked for Texas Hall of Honor
BY MARK K. CAMPBELL A basketball life is about to be honored. Robert Hale, who directed the Azle boys team to its highest heights ever, is being inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor. He traveled to Houston July 22 – where many of his former players and coaches joined him – to take his place with four other honorees. In his storied 42-year high school career, Hale posted a record of 753-379 with three state tournament visits and one victory. Plus there was that remarkable Azle season...

In four years at Everman, Hale won two district crowns with the Bulldogs “getting close to Austin – we reached the regional semifinals.” But Hale-led squads didn’t get past that. Then came Pampa.
Playing the game Hale grew up in Lubbock with a single mom. One advantage of playing in Lubbock was that the town was basketball crazy, he recalled. Texas Tech had just joined the Southwest Conference and was drawing big crowds. “The late ‘50’s-early ‘60’s was a great time in Lubbock basketball history,” Hale said. “Basketball was a big deal there.” The town’s hoops enthusiasm fi ltered down to the high school The 2003-04 Hornet basketball team coached by Robert Hale (right) remains Azle’s level; he played for Lubbock squad ever. Dos and don’ts of kitchen remodels According to Remodeling magazine’s “2014 Cost vs. Value Report,” a major kitchen remodeling project should enable homeowners to recoup 74.2 percent of their initial investments. Kitchen renovations have long been a safe way to improve the functionality and value of a home. But not every kitchen project is a guaranteed winner. Homeowners may inadvertently make changes that end up sticking out like a sore thumb rather than improving the space. Take a look at these kitchen remodeling dos and don’ts to guide your next undertaking. DO consider the way your kitchen will look with the rest of the home. Keep architectural integrity in mind when designing the space. A farmhouse sink and country cabinets can look out of place in an ultramodern home. DON’T overlook the importance of a seasoned designer or architect. These pros will know the tricks to maximizing space and achieving the ideal layout of appliances and may be able to recommend local contractors and vendors. DO look beyond surface details to the structural integrity of the design. The kitchen should be functional, longlasting and beautiful. DON’T design just for today, but look to the future as well. Unless you are willing to spend $50,000 every five years, look for styles and materi-

als that will last for the long haul. Older homeowners may want to make adjustments now that address potential mobility issues down the road. DO work with what you have. A complete demolition and renovation is not always necessary to achieve the desired results. Only invest in major changes if something is not working (such as having to walk across the entire kitchen to access the stove) or is unsafe. Otherwise, minor upgrades may do the trick. DON’T overimprove the space. A fully equipped commercial kitchen may be handy for a professional chef, but the average person may not need an industrial hood and indoor pizza oven. When you make excessive improvements, you may not be able to recoup as much of the money spent because your home will not be on par with the values of homes in the neighborhood. DO make sure you can afford the project. Plan for some unexpected purchases and plan out the renovation according to your budget. Skimping on materials or design because of lack of money may leave you feeling dissatisfied afterward.
