Reno man using bayonet charged with stabbing murder BY NATALIE GENTRY Floyd Levi Nunley, 49, of Reno was arrested Monday, Aug. 17, and charged with murder in the stabbing death of Shane Allen Veselka, 40, of Fort Worth. According to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office, Veselka died at 5:33 p.m. that evening at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in Azle due to stab wounds of the chest and abdomen. The medical examiner ruled his death a homicide. The probable cause affidavit stated that Nunley, the resident of a home in the 1000 block of Shady Lane – where the incident occurred – admitted to stabbing Veselka with a bayonet after he put Nunley in a headlock. A Reno police officer was dispatched to the residence at approximately 4:15 p.m. in response to a report of a stabbing. Upon arrival, the officer found Veselka lying on the ground, non-responsive and bloody, although still breathing. The officer said he placed Nunley in restraints and called to get LifeCare dispatched to the scene. Veselka was transported by ambulance to the hospital. According to the affidavit, Nunley told the officer that Veselka came in the house and placed Nunley in a headlock. He said he pulled himself to a chair, grabbed a bayonet from the arm of the chair, and stabbed Veselka. According to Parker County Jail records, Nunley has been charged with murder with bond set at $1 million.

An article in the Feb. 16 issue of the News that year says that during a domestic dispute, Nunley fired a semi-automatic rifle at a family member who drove into the driveway in an attempt to defuse the situation. SWAT eventually surrounded the residence and used a public address system to negotiate Nunley’s surrender. According to court records, he later pleaded guilty to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and received probation. Then, on Dec. 17, 2008, the A history of violence courts revoked his probation This isn’t the first run in Nun- and Nunley was sentenced to
four years in jail. Veselka was also no stranger to violence. In addition to his criminal record reaching back as far as 1996, Veselka was also the victim of an attempted murder in 2006. According to an account published in the Oct. 25, 2006 Epigraph, Veselka was involved in a shooting in Springtown on Oct. 21 stemming from an argument between him and William Wayne Brown. The article noted that Parker County Sheriff’s deputies found Veselka lying underneath the dead body of his friend, who was also shot. According to witness statements, gunshots were heard after an argument ensued between the two men. Brown’s death was later ruled a suicide.

BY JACKIE “JJ” JOY Last Friday we were met with some disappointment. Due to some confusion with the Tarrant County Food Bank, produce was not delivered. However; it was rescheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 26 and that put a smile on everyone’s face. If you enjoy yoga, we have two levels of classes: low impact chair yoga and higher impact yoga classes. Chair yoga is on Monday and Wednesday at 11 a.m. The regular yoga classes are on Tuesday and Thursday at 10:30 a.m. If you prefer “normal” chair exercises, you can attend that class on Tuesday and Thursday at 9:30 a.m. All of these take place in the Emanuel Building. That is the first building on the right as you come into the Ash Creek Park area. The menu for the week be-
ginning Aug. 31 will include country fried steak with gravy and spaghetti casserole. Plan to attend on Wednesday, Aug. 29 as we celebrate September’s birthdays and anniversaries with cake and ice cream. For a complete look at the menus and happenings at your local senior center, feel free to come by and visit. The location address is 601 Southeast Parkway here in Azle or call 817444-0070. This week we want to Spotlight Mrs. Joyce Glover. Joyce has been a member of the center for more than 10 years. She was the oldest mother at the center for Mother’s Day this year. Unfortunately, her friends at the center will miss her bright smile and loving manner. She passed away last Saturday from an unexpected ailment.
Our thoughts and condolences go to her family and loved ones. Do you need help finding assistance around your home or for special needs? Our center has a lot of resource information that may help you find what you are looking for including home care, lawyers, or even transportation. For all you who like doing crafts, the Senior Center is having a Crafters Sale: Art to Zippers. A wide variety of items will be available for purchase, from beads, ceramics, flowers, art, zippers, and many other craft supplies. Mark your calendars for Sept. 3, 4, 8, 9, 10, and 11 from 9 a.m-2 p.m. The sale will be located in the B.J. Clark Annex building, room four. Hope to see you soon!

Curfew called for by fed-up neighborhood residents n CURFEW, FROM PAGE ONE.
kids running around at 3 and 4 a.m. – nothing good comes from that,” Newhouse said. “Unless parents are held accountable, nothing is going to stop. These kids know the law, they know what’s going to happen. Their parents will pick them up, or they’ll go to the [juvenile] detention center and their parents will pick them up the next day. “We’re coming to our elected body to ask you to do something about it.” Pros and cons of curfews Some council members remember looking into the possibility of a curfew a few years back, and know it can be a challenging, even formidable process. Mayor Alan Brundrett said the council and city staff wanted residents to know up front the pros and cons of implementing a curfew ordinance. Police Chief Rick Pippins told the crowded council chambers that while a curfew ordinance is a powerful tool, potential violations of the 1st, 4th, 9th, and 14th amendments must be considered when implementing such an ordinance. Additional staffing as well as costly physical alterations at the PD to accommodate detained juveniles could prove to be very expensive, as well, Pippins said. Plus, there would be legal expenses to ensure the ordinance met all requirements of Texas law. “The only teeth we have is when juveniles are cited along with their parents,” Pippins said. “Then the parents have ‘skin in the game,’ and feel the same pain of loss.” Still, the chief urged caution in “using a sledgehammer when a flyswatter will do the job.” Pippins said his department does see repeat offenders, both juvenile and adult. “But we also see people out after midnight doing what we all did when we are young, and that is... parking and looking at stars,” he said, drawing belly laughs from all in attendance. Pippins also admitted he’s heard the names of at least a couple of the juveniles in question at least weekly since he arrived in Azle five months ago, and the police department is doing everything in its power to resolve a bad situation. Pippins surprised many in the room when he told them juvenile crime is not handled criminally, but civilly. Often, law enforcement’s only recourse is to deliver juveniles to their parents. Brundrett said he was concerned about enacting a curfew throughout the city when two to five kids seem to be committing all the crimes. Council member Paul Crabtree said he feels part of the analysis of the situation should include alternatives like crime watches that might mitigate the problem without going to an extreme measure like a curfew. “The real question is whether these crimes are being committed by kids aged 10 to 16 during curfew hours,” Pippins said. Ironically, Pippins also said two of the individuals believed to be involved in the burglary at the Newhouse residence have been identified and are actually adults – not the juveniles assoFaced with a Drinking Problem? I hate to see it come to any one of us shooting a child. What if one of our officers has to shoot? It’s going to be on everyone who didn’t want to take care of a situation that needed to be done.” Steven Ingram got off on the wrong foot when he stepped to the microphone and told council members: “We’re going to have to vote you all out if this doesn’t work. Don’t be a politician, do the right thing.” Brundrett reminded Ingram that council members are all volunteers and do not get paid for their service. Ingram’s tone changed. “The police department’s got good guys. They talk to us with sensibility and they are doing all they can, but their hands are tied,” he said. “We’re sick of this. The fact that I am biased doesn’t make me wrong
Y
esterday, my mom heard me preach for the first time in years. I’m not sure how many years, but I know I was still a pastor, so it’s been at least seven. She’s always been one of my biggest fans (as big as 5’2” and 120 pounds can be). Now 80 and suffering from macular degeneration, she really can’t see what I look like, but she still thinks I am one of the two best looking “young” men in the world (my brother is the other one). At the end of yesterday’s service, she said, “I know I’m biased, but that was the best sermon I’ve heard in a long time.” Just because she’s biased doesn’t mean she’s wrong. I often talk about my son, the actor. He’s fantastic, and the fact that I am biased doesn’t make me wrong either. Neither Mom’s bias nor mine make us right either. The quality of preaching or acting is largely subjective and very much in the eye of the beholder. An actor seeks to make a character believable, generate an emotional response, and get the audience caught up in the story. A preacher seeks to make objective truth accessible, clear, compelling, and applicable, and call
the listeners to response. If those things are accomplished it can be called good. How good probably depends on the bias of the audience. My pondering today has LIFE MATTERS led me to three conclusions: 1. Bias is not Gerry Lewis bad. There are multiple reasons for bias: family connections, religious upbringing, geography, education, personal history...the list could go on. Our biases are usually formed out of deeply impactful experiences that generally lead to our beliefs, values, and convictions. When we get upset about someone else’s bias, it is usually not the fact that they are biased that gets a burr under our blanket; it is the fact that their bias differs from ours. 2. Everyone is biased! Liberals are biased. Conservatives are biased. Democrats, Republi-
cans, evangelicals, Catholics, Muslims, Hispanics, African-Americans, Asians, Anglos, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, politicians, non-politicians, Southerners, Northerners…you get the point. We all need to admit that we are biased. The problem is not bias. The problem is when we let our biases lead us to be jerks and do stupid stuff. (Social media comes to mind). 3. Being biased doesn’t mean we are wrong and can’t be objective. I have personal biases that our lives matter to God, that the Bible is true, and that there is one true God who is interested and involved in the world, and there is one way to know Him. I’ve yet to hear a reasoned, compelling argument that would lead me to believe otherwise, but the fact that I believe does not make it so. Neither my biases nor my beliefs affect the nature of truth. It is my prayer that how I act on my biases and beliefs will never hinder someone else from finding objective truth. Young woman loved homesteading alone in Wyoming
A
n Azle News reader, a 91-year-old lady, left a sack of books for me at the newspaper office. She explained that she purchased Cow Chips ‘N’ Cactus in the 1960s at a flea market in Rome, Italy (yes, Italy) for 300 lira (about 50 cents). Florence Blade Smith, author of the book – who had autographed it – wrote of her three years in Wyoming (1920-1922). Florence, at age 21, decided to take a leave of absence from her job at the Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago and travel to Wyoming in November 1919 to file a homestead claim. The modified law let people live on the land for seven months per year and “prove up” in only three years instead of the previous five. She rode west on a train, and a land agent drove Florence and three other women homesteaders out to see their claims in an old car (probably a Ford Model T.) They witnessed it and signed papers. Her claim was located 90 miles east of the Big Horn Mountains, which she could view in the distance.
THE
Her expenses were $250 for fees and filing and her round trip train ride out and back to Chicago where she returned to her job after a ten-day leave. She had six months from filing to occupy the land, which she planned to do in the spring in warmer weather. She felt like a proud “land owner” of 320 acres. Surprisingly, her mother supported Florence completely, and even supplied some of the up-front money. Each week the mother bought a few extra can goods for Florence to take out West. A big trunk sat open which the two women began filling with other necessities. Florence purchased a portable nine by twelve “garage” in Chicago that she would assemble on the land. This would be her home 57 miles away from the nearest town. From the very beginning she loved the sunsets. She gloried in the wild flowers and the view of the Big Horn Mountains. When she wrote her book later, she didn't ever recall getting lonesome or homesick. She read, wrote letters home, explored her land and cared for her garden. Neighbors from miles away were helpful. If she went visiting and shelled peas as she talked, the family sent generous amounts home with her. Remembering, as she wrote her book, “I felt like one of God's Chosen. In fact, I’m not too sure but what I did lead a charmed life, especially in looking back on the spark of Fate that had brought me to this bit of land. Here I was fortunate enough to have my days start with the gorgeous color of a Western sunrise, the air full of the sound of birds...long hikes in the warm sunshine and finally a rest in a sandy hollow...looking up at the blue sky overhead with a song in my heart, dreaming a whole set of new dreams. I felt like I was on a seven month vacation with pay. The wonder never ceased.” (p. 67) She did do chores too! She returned to her job in Chicago in the winter months. Isn’t it amazing how people react differently to experiences? To some, the wide open spaces of Wyoming,

The wife of another homesteader once asked Florence, “Why does any girl in her right mind choose to come out and homestead in a God-forsaken country like this?” To Florence, “It was just a little spot of heaven, the most wonderful bunch of land anyplace in these whole United States.” (p. 102) That last summer she dreaded for her adventure to end, but she met the man she married, Arch Smith, a rancher and a good cook! She went back to Chicago to think it over, and returned to marry him June 30, 1923. The little lady who found Florence's book in Italy was quite an adventurer herself. She became a Women Airforce Service Pilot (WASP), training at Avenger Field in Sweetwater, Texas in a 1944 class. I’m not naming her without asking permission, and I couldn’t get a hold of her. The plan also would spur the creation of tens of thousands of jobs while ensuring gridreliability, the president added. On Aug. 3, Gov. Greg Abbott reacted to the president’s announcement, saying: “Texas will lead the fi ght against an overreaching federal government that seems hell-bent on threatening the free-market principles this country was founded on.”
exas Railroad Commission Chair David Porter on Aug. 19 spoke against America’s Clean Power Plan, a regulatory framework rolled out by the White House on Aug. 3. Texas is one of at least a dozen states lining up in opposition. Porter called the plan “another blatant attack on the oil and gas industry that will further impede America’s energy security, kill jobs and put even more stress on our national and state economies.” Porter was elected chair of the three-member commission that oversees the energy industry regulating state agency in June 2014. President Obama called the fi nal version of the plan to reduce methane emissions from the energy and agriculture industries “the biggest step we’ve ever taken to combat climate change.” Obama said the plan “sets the fi rst-ever carbon pollution standards for power plants while providing states

This comes in the wake of the death of Sandra Bland, a STATE woman CAPITAL who in July was HIGHLIGHTS found dead in Ed Sterling a Waller County jail cell three days after she was arrested and jailed following a traffi c stop. The death was ruled a suicide but questions remain. “Our criminal justice system assumes a great responsibility for the people in our custody. to go. I had to be with the people I love on this day. Because somehow, after all these years, it still hurt. And at fi rst I didn’t understand why it still hurt so much. Why was I constantly looking at the calendar; why was I pacing in my kitchen; why was I listening to music so much louder than normal; why was every worry that week suddenly magnified? It seemed as though 10 years were being condensed into one week of stress and pain and frustration. Ten years of trying to fi ll a vacuum that one of your best friends has left when he suddenly and violently died. I was also dreading going back that Sunday because of a deeper reason as well. I was 14 when he died; he and I were in the same class in high school. His life ended at being a teenager, while I’ve gone on. I’ve gotten to live, and he has not.
That’s just the simple truth. But simple truths can hurt just as much as simple lies. And each time I’ve gone back to that headstone, I’ve been struck at how much I’ve changed. At fi rst it was gradual. I went out to visit his grave often at fi rst. But as the years passed, I went out fewer and fewer. Some years I didn’t make it out at all. What I didn’t realize, was how much I was changing during those sporadic meetings with Matthew’s grave. Each time I’d come back, I wouldn’t know what to say. What do you say to somebody who is very much dead and in the ground and when you talk out loud you feel slightly foolish, as if they are really going to answer out of the clear, blue (hot) Texas sky? But this year, I wanted to tell Matthew everything: there was so much he was missing. Look! Derek’s had a baby, and Critter

a car crash August 16, 2005, it rocked the community. It made headlines in this small town, and hundreds came to the funeral to pay their respects. We each have our own ways of grieving. Sometimes going back to a place just twists the knife deeper. I had not been back to visit in a while. Suffi ce it to say, I was anxious for the whole week before Sunday, the 16th. I was dreading having to drive down that lonely stretch of 199, to make my pilgrimage. Sadly, I can’t say it’s an annual one. Sometimes in this messy life, priorities get shifted, memories get lost, or (somehow) I’ve gone to make my home somewhere else. I’ve tried to go to the cemetery behind Ash Creek Baptist Church every year; but I think Matthew understands why I just can’t go back sometimes. But this year – this year, I had

(25-18, 25-23), Canyon Randall (11-25, 19-25), and Midlothian (19-25, 10-25). In the victory against Flower Mound, five different Lady Hornets posted 2 kills apiece – Hannah Walker, Kaitlyn Ford,

Against Randall, Ford again led with 3 kills and 4 digs; Boiles also had 4 digs. Campoli’s 4 assists was tops as were 5 digs by Tristen Rush. In the Midlothian match – the final in pool play Aug. 20 – Walker and Ford’s 3 kills paced Azle. Graham shone at the net with 3.5 blocks; Campoli had 2. Coach Jennifer Robinson said she saw good and bad in those opening matches. “In the morning match [Flower Mound], we really came out aggressive and played relaxed. “In matches two and three, we came out flat and our serve receive fell apart.” The next day, Azle lost to Kennedale. Robinson said, “We did not play up to our potential against Kennedale.” AHS recorded just 8 kills with Graham getting 3 of them. Movie Man
Azle News Wednesday, August 26, 2015
Game adaptations take another Hit, man The Movie Man did not know Hitman: Agent 47 was based on a video game. Cinematic history says video games do not make good movies – in fact, one of the worst movies ever made was 1993’s Super Mario Bros. (Movie Man No. 2 [yes, 2!] a 2, Worst of Year – and that’s the case with Hitman: Agent 47. About the film The summer fi lm glut is offi cially over. This week’s choices were paltry, so the Movie Man settled into Hitman: Agent 47. Gamers always long for their beloved favorites to become hit movies. It almost never happens. Rare exceptions include Tomb Raider (2001, MM #409, 5) and its sequel Cradle of Life (2003, MM #519, 5) and the seemingly endless string of Resident Evil movies. (One more remains, The Final Chapter [due Jan. 27, 2017], so you’ve got a while to catch up on them.) However, just because the videogame duds keep coming, doesn’t mean studios won’t keep trying to hit the jackpot with couch-bound fanboys/ girls. On the horizon are several more efforts: The animated Angry Birds (remember when even moms played that game?) will be voiced by Bill Hader, Peter Dinklage, and Jason Sudeikis; it’ll be in 3-D, likely, next May 20. Warcraft – based on the insanely popular World of Warcraft – is expected to be a blockbuster next summer when it arrives June 10. Assassin’s Creed will star Michael Fassbender; the movie got the primo release date of Dec. 21, 2016 so clearly the studio has high hopes – of course, they usually do. Looking well ahead, Uncharted, a sorta Indiana Jones
adventure game, is probable. If Nathan (Firefly) Fillion plays Nathan Drake, game nerds might fl at-out pass out from excitement. The projected arrival date is June 30, 2017. Others in development or being pondered include Splinter Cell (with Tom Hardy in 2017), BioShock, Halo, and even a Tomb Raider reboot for 2017. So, game on! (Sorry.) The plot (spoiler) Katia (Hannah Ware) is a young woman who is searching for her father who, she believes, abandoned her as a child. A famed scientist now living off the map, Litvenko (Ciaran Hinds), left her for her own good, he says. Lots of people are looking for Hinds, including the mysterious Agent 47 (Rupert Friend); a hitman, he’s supposed to assassinate Ware and Hinds, but he needs to use Ware to fi nd her father first. Along comes John Smith (Zachary Quinto) who says he’s there to help Ware. They fl ee with the relentless Friend on their trail. Soon, Ware learns that it’s actually Quinto, who is working for Tobias (Jurgen

Fitness tips for busy moms Working mothers have a lot on their plates. In addition to the responsibilities that come with raising a family, working moms also must focus on their careers. Many mothers find that managing such hectic balancing acts leaves little time for physical fitness. But there are ways
for working moms to stay physically fit even as they juggle their commitments to career and family. • Work out in the early morning. Working out in the early morning, when the kids are still asleep and the office has yet to open, is a great way for busy working mothers to get their daily exercise. Designate a room in your home where you can spend time each morning doing some light strength training before hitting the treadmill or elliptical machine. The United States Department of Health and Human Services recommends that adults get at least 150 minFacials · Massages utes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of Formal Styling • Make Up vigorous aerobic activity Manicures · Pedicures each week, and women Cuts · Color who get up just 45 min-

utes earlier each morning can meet those requirements and then some. An added benefit to working out in the early morning is that many people who follow such regimens insist they have more energy throughout the rest of the day. • Exercise with the kids. Working mothers looking to find time for exercise can turn part of family time into a time to exercise with their children. Play in the yard with youngsters while dinner is cooking or go for nightly post-meal walks. Exercising with kids is a great way for mothers to get their daily exercise while also instilling a love of physical activity in their children. • Have a backup plan on hand. Working out at a gym can be motivational, as many mothers want to make sure their monthly membership fees aren’t going to waste. But there will inevitably be days when working mothers can’t get to the gym. Prepare for such days by purchasing home workout DVDs you can play while the kids are doing their homework or after
they have gone to bed. • Look for gyms with childcare. Many gyms now offer on-site childcare to parents of young children who can’t stay home alone while their folks are at the gym. Gyms that offer on-site childcare may prove more reliable and even less expensive than hiring a sitter, and some gyms even offer fitness programs to youngsters, helping to ensure kids get the daily exercise they need as well. • Exercise during lunch breaks. If possible, squeeze in your daily exercise during lunch breaks. Take advantage of on-site exercise facilities if your company offers them. If not, take your lunch outside and then go for a walk around the campus or a nearby park rather than eating at your desk. Finding time to exercise is a common dilemma for working mothers. But there are some creative ways for moms to stay fit without affecting their commitments to work and family.
