Railroad Commission: XTO didn’t cause quakes BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN Contradicting a study by Southern Methodist University (SMU) scientists, the Texas Railroad Commission (TRC) Monday, Aug. 31 released preliminary findings saying an XTO Energy disposal well near Azle likely played no role in a swarm of earthquakes in this area in late 2013 and early 2014. The SMU study, published in April

in the journal Nature Communications, pointed to oil and gas operations – specifically the high injection rate of fluids to the west of a fault line combined with high water removal rates to the east of the fault – as the most likely cause of the Azle quakes. Two specific injection wells owned by XTO Energy and Enervest were identified in the SMU study as the most likely culprits.

Lakeside vs. Fort Worth Cities headed to court over annexation BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN In spite of a lawsuit filed by the city of Fort Worth in an attempt to prevent it, the town of Lakeside moved ahead with its voluntary annexation of a portion of the Ella Young Addition Monday, Aug. 17. Lakeside earlier this year annexed Rankin Road, the western part of Confederate Park Road, and a small strip of Silver Creek Road. Fort Worth officials contacted Lakeside Town Administrator Norman Craven when they got wind of the town’s intention to annex. PLEASE SEE FORT, PAGE 8A.

The TRC has conducted its own investigation into the quakes. Involved parties have 15 days to file objections to the TRC ruling before it become final. Azle Mayor Alan Brundrett said he is perplexed by the TRC’s ruling. “I just don’t see how you can dispute the science,” Brundrett said on Tuesday. “SMU did a scientific study, and all roads point to oil and gas op-

erations as the cause [of the earthquakes].” Brundrett pointed to hundreds of thousands of dollars in equipment and months of data collection utilized in SMU’s study, which was done in conjunction with the United States Geological Survey or USGS. “The TRC hires somebody who supports its point of view – not a third party – to look into it,” Brun-

drett said. “Then they hold one hearing and say ‘we don’t believe your findings,’” The TRC has not yet released its findings related to the Enervest-operated well. Brundrett has been invited to be part of a panel discussion about energy at the Texas Tribune Festival Oct. 16-18 on the University of Texas campus in Austin.

Azle man indicted on child sex charge

Stewart Street Bridge Going Up

BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN A Tarrant County grand jury has returned an indictment against an Azle man accused of having sex with a child. Branden Lee Chandler, 26, is charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child, a first degree felony. He was indicted Aug. 25. According to a copy of a search warrant obtained by the Azle News, Chandler allegedly had sexual contact with the child, who was under the age of 14 at the time, in July or August of 2014. A suspicious text found on the child’s cell phone led to an outcry of sexual assault from the child. Chandler was arrested in late November 2014 and was released from Beams for the South Stewart Street Bridge across Ash Creek were set Thursday, Aug. 27. Tarrant County: No tax rate increase proposed The Tarrant County Commissioners Court was presented with a balanced budget proposal Monday, Aug. 17, which would maintain the current tax rate. The total proposed budget is $560,529,263 with a tax rate of 26.4 cents per $100 valuation. Tarrant County taxes on a home with a value of $100,000 will remain $264. The tax rate has either de-

creased or stayed the same since 2006. During a public hearing, the Commissioners Court voted for a 3 percent merit-based increase to non-law enforcement employees. Law enforcement structure adjustments were also increased by 3 percent. The Court also approved the addition of 21 positions to the

general fund, mainly to address increased workload, staffing of new facilities, and hiring for new programs. Compared with the other five large urban counties in Texas – Travis, El Paso, Harris, Bexar, and Dallas – Tarrant’s tax rate is the second lowest. The Commissioners Court is scheduled to adopt the budget and set the tax rate on Sept. 15.

Sting Fling 2015

Hornet Nation 2015 Version

It’s what Azle does Saturday, Sept. 12 BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN

School has started, temperatures are losing their searing edge, and excitement is building as fall approaches. In Azle, it means football season and a long-standing traditional festival put on by the Azle Area Chamber of Commerce (AACC) each September – Sting Fling. This year, the annual festival returns to Main Street and the central business district, where its predecessor, the Jumping Jack Jamboree, was begun. AACC Executive Director Beth Crowe says Sting Fling 2015 – slated for 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12 – is centered on “preserving our past and preparing our future.” “The Sting Fling committee is very excited to move the Sting Fling back to downtown

continued growth of the festival, Crowe said. The Classic Car Show runs from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in front of Azle Elementary (the Rock School), making it visible from SH 199. “The addition of the SCA Steak Cookoff Competition is sure to be exciting this year,” Crowe said. “It starts at 10 a.m. and should smell delicious in the Roe Street field, drawing more hungry festival-goers toward the food vendors and their delicious fare.” The ever-popular Weiner Dog Derby will take place in Central Park in the volleyball court area beginning at 1 p.m. A free Kids Area will be located at the entrance to Central Park, 263 West Main Street, and the petting zoo, hosted by Azle

featured in the parking lot in front of 404 Main Place beginning Friday, Sept. 11, and J&J Parties will provide blow-ups, slides and trains on the Rock School playground, providing fun for kids of all ages. The event will end with a bang at the Central Park amphitheater with a live concert by “Monkey Love” from 7-9 p.m. “The Sting Fling 2015 committee has worked hard to breathe excitement and fresh energy into this year’s event, and I believe they have succeeded,” Crowe said. “They’ve done it while maintaining the integrity of what makes the Sting Fling feel like a celebration of the unique identity of our hometown.”

Fans of all ages poured into Pirate Stadium in Granbury to cheer the football Hornets on in the opening game of the season. Azle rooters went home happy as Azle demolished the hosts 49-7. Next up, the Hornet Nation head to Waxahachie Saturday Night. Photo courtesy Richard Spraggens

Evaporation largely to blame for receding lake levels as millions of gallons disappear daily BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN

Residents all around Eagle Mountain Lake (EML) rejoiced when spring rains, fueled by El Niño conditions, filled the 10-foot-plus low reservoir to overflowing. Now they are watching with dismay as the waterline recedes again. The lake was 1.41 feet below its conservation pool level of 619.10 on Tuesday, Sept. 1.

Tarrant Regional Water District officials say that’s typical during the hot summers in North Texas – and evaporation is largely the reason. During a typical hot summer day, TRWD water supply reservoirs can lose as much as 750 million gallons of water to evaporation alone. “The amount of water we lose to evaporation this time of year is way more than what we provide our customers on a dai-

ly basis,” said Laura Blaylock, TRWD’s manager of energy and water resources. “It is almost twice as much.” We asked Blaylock to narrow the focus to the local level by providing some numbers for EML specifically, along with consumption by the cities of Azle and Springtown along with Community Water Supply, which serves an area generally north of Azle.

On exceptionally hot summer days, Eagle Mountain Lake can see around 100 million gallons of water evaporated from its surface. Tarrant Regional Water District is investigating a system that would automate the recording of evaporation rates. Photo by Carla Noah Stutsman

Blaylock explained that those entities report monthly, as opposed to daily, but she did some quick mathematical calculations to arrive at some daily averages for the month of July. The city of Azle diverted an average of 2 million gallons of water a day for its water customers during July. Springtown diverted about 200,000 gallons per day, while Community Water Supply took

evaporation alone. “Depending upon many factors – wind is a big one – EML loses about one-half inch of water to evaporation on a typical hot summer day,” Blaylock said. “Many people don’t realize that evaporation can occur even when it’s raining.” According to its website, TRWDs evaporation losses are measured by the Pan Evaporation System, a series of monitoring stations throughout North Texas that are managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. “It’s literally a pan that is filled full of water and set in an unobstructed area so that it can accurately calculate evaporation,” said Blaylock. “For example, the pan is filled with three inches of water, and then after a certain amount of time someone comes by and measures the amount of water left and calculates the inches of evaporation in one day.” In order to determine the district’s daily evaporation, TRWD’s engineering staff applies the evaporation rate to the known surface areas at district lakes. Through that process, they are able to determine how much water is lost to evaporation each day at each district lake. Blaylock noted that the district is exploring development of its own evaporation monitoring system that would automate the process and provide more accurate information from stations located at TRWD reservoirs. “We are looking into developing our own system that would get more accurate estimates from stations taken closer to our reservoirs,” she said. “These readings will take into account elevation, dry line areas and several other factors.”

out about 300,000 gallons a day. That brings the total average daily amount diverted from EML by those three entities to about 2.5 million gallons. Compare that to about 70 million gallons per day lost from EML to evaporation, according to Blaylock. On July 31 – when temperatures soared to 107 degrees – EML lost a whopping 103 million gallons of water to

Fort Worth suing Lakeside ■ FORT, FROM PAGE ONE.

Court, who declined to hear the case. “In essence, Fort Worth was planning to annex the area, but 24 residents took action to incorporate the town of Lakeside and prevented the annexation,” Craven said. “It’s important to note that, based on the Texas Local Government Code Chapter 42 as well as the ruling in that lawsuit, the town of Lakeside concluded its extra-territorial jurisdiction (ETJ) consisted of one-half mile around its city limits,” Craven said, adding that a city or town’s ETJ is established based upon its number of residents. The rules cities and towns must follow in the annexation process, too, are often different based upon their number of residents, Craven said. For instance, a city Fort Worth’s size must publish a five-year annexation plan; a town the size of Lakeside doesn’t have to.

“They pointed out a typographical error on the agenda for the meeting at which the annexation was to be voted upon, so we rescheduled that meeting from Thursday, Aug. 13, to Aug. 17,” Craven said. Then Fort Worth sent Craven a document he’d never seen before – from 1971 – alleging that the town of Lakeside had “relinquished to the city of Fort Worth all extra-territorial jurisdictional rights it may have had in property outside of the area circumscribed by the mutual common boundary line.” Craven indicated that the meeting would go on, and hours before it commenced, the city of Fort Worth filed a lawsuit in Tarrant County. A judge declined to enact a temporary restraining order (TRO) proposed by the city of Fort Worth. That TRO would have prevented the town of Lakeside from annexing the property in the Ella Young Ad1971 “land swap” dition. 730 South Wreck

No injuries were reported in a five-vehicle crash about 5:15 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, in the 14000 block of FM 730 South. However, the roadway was shut down in both directions for almost an hour as Azle police sorted things out. According to the accident report, four of the vehicles were stopped in traffic in the northbound lane of FM 730 South approaching the four-way stop at Main Street. Robert E. White, 38, of Azle, was also northbound at the wheel of a blue Ford F150 pickup when, failing to control his speed, he impacted the last vehicle in line. That caused a chain reaction, with three additional vehicles being struck by the vehicle behind them. No charges have been filed in the incident.

POLICE BLOTTER Officers with the Azle Police Department arrested the following individuals during the week of Aug. 23-29: • Robert Garcia Boyd, 60, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was arrested Aug. 28 in the 800 block of Kimbrough Road and charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI). Boyd posted $7,000 bond and was released from the Azle jail the following day. • Sharon D. Seybert, 30, of Springtown, was arrested Aug. 29 in the 600 block of Southeast Parkway and charged with DWI with a blood alcohol content of 0.15 or greater. The legal limit in the state of Texas is 0.08. Seybert posted $6,000 bond and was released from the Azle jail Aug. 30. Azle police arrested 10 individuals during the same week who were the subject of warrants issued by various law enforcement agencies. Police also issued two citations for public intoxication and one for public intoxication.

I wanna hold your hand

These cop shootings need to stop now People have different opinions about law enforcement officers. Some admire them. Some feel harassed. Some are frightened. Some have family histories of serving. But no one wants them shot dead. Sadly, that’s what’s happening in our country right now; law officers are brave to begin with – now that fortitude is being tested everywhere as their ranks get attacked. The recent killing of Harris County Deputy Sheriff Darren Goforth was made even more heinous by the cowardliness of the attack; he was shot 15 times, from behind. I was a firefighter and we always appreciated having cops around. They had our backs, watching out for us while we were otherwise occupied. That probably makes me biased. I always liked having an officer around. And still do. But people are different. My daughters both married guys that, they say, while driving get stopped for no reason. One daughter’s husband has long hair and the other’s is Latino. Both daughters distrust police – the exact opposite of me. They have seen what they perceive as “harassment” first hand; I have not. However, everyone agrees that law enforcement officers getting shot and killed is beyond unacceptable. Often “the war on...” is overused. Politicians trumpet the “war on women” and preachers bellow about “the war on the church.” Those are certainly debatable; what is without question is that, yes, there is a “war on cops” right now. A Texas officer was quoted addressing “a dangerous national rhetoric out there today that has gotten out of control.” Part of that is fueled by social media. In July, I wrote an editorial praising social media; locally, a group of residents responded rapidly to honor an injured soldier returning home. But this is the ugly side of social media. Opinions can incite action when they are posted then fanned like flames, racing all over the planet. Instead of just riling up people in your neighborhood, now you can present your beliefs and reach millions instantly. Law enforcement death numbers, overall, are not very different from recent years. But this sudden rise frightening. There’s a perception by some in America right now that the police might not be the “good guys” anymore. I don’t believe that. We heard the same thing about returning Vietnam vets, how they were “baby killers”; it was untrue, of course. So, what to do for our law enforcement personnel? Rise up for the good guys. Thank a cop today. Give them a shout out online. Believe me, no matter how you feel about them, you will be mighty glad to see them show up when you need help. MKC

hen my brain starts down a trail, I never know where it will end up. Sometimes that’s a good thing. Sometimes, not so much. Often, that mental journey contains some unexpected turns and forks in the road. Kind of like this column. My journey of imagination after reading the closing verse of the book of Hosea, which I will share later. I traveled from there to an old Southern Gospel Song that my friend Gerre Joiner sang a couple of weeks ago at the First Baptist Church in Decatur: I Can’t Even Walk Without You Holding My Hand. From there, my mind continued on to a trip to the Grand Canyon in 2001 when I took my kids, then 13 and 10, on a two-day hike to the bottom and back. I remembered how many people along the trail marveled at these two youngsters with their backpacks and ski pole walking sticks on this 20-mile round trip in one of the most amazing locales on God’s creation. My kids were – still are, and always will be – amazing. But they were able

to make that trip with confidence because they knew Dad would get them there and back. They knew I’d help them over the rough spots. They knew I would carry the extra weight. They LIFE MATTERS knew I would give them my Gerry Lewis water if they ran out. They knew they could hold my hand in any precarious spots. They knew that, if we stayed on the trail and kept going up, we would eventually get to the top. And they knew that there was no way I would leave them alone. After a little reminiscence about that great experience and reflecting on how much I loved for my kids to want to hold my hand, I thought about the song that inspired the title of today’s post. I Want to Hold Your Hand was recorded by the Beatles in 1963.

It was their second million-selling record, their all-time No. 1, and was listed in 2013 – yes, 50 years later – as the 44th biggest hit of “all-time” on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. When I think about the explicit lyrics of today, there is something refreshing about a sappy and carefree song where a boy says to a girl nothing more suggestive than, “I want to hold your hand.” Now, let me travel full circle. Hosea 13:9 says, “The ways of the Lord are right; the righteous walk in them, but the rebellious stumble in them.” You and I are often guilty of complaining about how rough the path of life is. We sometimes want to blame our circumstances for our failures. Notice in the verse that the “ways” of the Lord are right. Some walk and some stumble. The difference is not the circumstances, but the travelers. Could it be that the “righteous” can walk because we know Whose hand to hold and we know that our lives matter to Him? President Adamses’ relative creates odd gold rush livelihood

S

tudents of American history will remember that two sets of father and son presidents served this country. There were John Adams and his son John Quincy Adams and the two George Bushes. A grandfather and grandson also served: William Henry Harrison and Benjamin Harrison. The two Roosevelts were cousins. A relative of the two Adams presidents makes up the column this week. Another John Adams was born in a suburb of Boston in 1812. Originally, in 1632, a Henry Adams emigrated from England to Boston, thus beginning the American Adams dynasty. The Adams of today's column became an apprentice in foot-waremaking at age fourteen, but left the tedium of the job because he liked the outdoors and animals. He made a deal with a showman to hunt and capture live animals in Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire. After being injured by a tiger that he was training for his boss, he quit and went back to shoemaking in Boston, got married, and sired three children.

THE

At age 37 in 1849 tales of the California gold rush lured Adams away from his family. With his life savings of $6,000 (surely a lot of money for a shoemaker) he bought a huge order of boots and shoes, shipping them to St. Louis, Missouri to sell to the thousands of men heading west to the gold fields. Unfortunately, a fire on the wharf at St. Louis destroyed his entire investment. Even so, John decided to go on to California to try his luck, leaving his family back in Massachusetts. Mining did not turn out very well for him, so he began hunting to sell game for food to the miners. He even acquired a ranch near Stockton, Cal.ifornia but he lost it to creditors. He headed into the Sierra Nevada Mountains to hunt all the winter of 1852-53. He tanned the leather from the animal hides he shot to make leather clothing and moccasins for himself and wore that type of clothes from then on. He made harnesses, saddles, snowshoes, etc. as well. Adams hunted and trapped all the way north into what is now western Montana in 1853 where he caught alive a one-year-old female grizzly

that he named Lady Washington. He tamed her and taught her to follow him without a harness or any restraint. He taught her to carry a pack, to pull a heavy sled, or to let him ride on her PAGES FROM back. In 1854 he WESTERN found two, HISTORY week-old male J’Nell L. Pate grizzly cubs and trained them as well, naming one of them Benjamin Franklin. The next year a grizzly attacked him and caused a head injury that never healed, eventually causing his death. His pet Lady Washington mated with a male grizzly and later gave birth to a cub that Adams named John C. Fremont in honor of the explorer's California exploits. In 1854 Adams captured a huge grizzly in a large Publisher Kim Ware

trap and named it Samson. At 1,500 pounds it was one of the largest grizzly bears ever captured. By this time he was setting up shows of his animal menagerie, renting space in a basement in San Francisco to exhibit them. He called it the Pacific Museum. By 1858 a writer in a San Francisco newspaper called Adams the “Barnum of the Pacific.” However, in 1859, he overextended himself and lost his museum to creditors. (One feels that Adams must not have been a very good money manager!) He did salvage some of his animals. Because of the huge gash in his head from the 1855 injury, Adams knew his life was about over. He had been away from his wife back in Massachusetts for 10 years and determined to go home. He wanted to earn a large sum of money to leave her upon his death, so he took his group of animals to New York on a ship around Cape Horn, arriving in April 1860. He made a deal with P. T. Barnum, who was getting started in the circus business, that the showman would include Adams' animals. With his health

failing, he finally sold them to Barnum for a large amount of money, which he then gave to his wife. He thus reached his goal. Adams toured that summer with the animals, but one of his grizzlies was wrestling with him and accidently reopened the head wound. It had been injured numerous times and had left some brain tissue exposed. He died October 25, 1860 soon after reaching his home in Neponset, Massachussets near Boston. He was 48-years-old. A writer of the day, Theodore Hittell, interviewed Adams in California and wrote a book about him. Adams had taken the name of a brother, James Capen Adams, and the Hittell book used that name. Later writers have done the same. Of course, John Adams (or James Capen Adams) has gone down in history as (did you guess?)– Grizzly Adams – and has had other books written about him as well as a 1970s TV show and a movie. Folks may remember them. Retired history professor J’Nell Pate of Azle has authored several books, many of which are on sale in the lobby of the Azle News.

exas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Aug. 27 entered a plea of not guilty on felony charges of securities fraud at his arraignment in Fort Worth. Tarrant County 396th State District Court Judge George Gallagher gave Paxton until Sept. 30 to answer to the charges. Paxton is accused of encouraging two individuals to buy stock in Severgy, a Collin County-based technology firm, and being compensated for his actions without being registered as an investment advisor in accordance with Security and Exchange Commission regulations. Also Paxton is accused of falsely giving prospective investors the impression that he was an investor in Severgy. The Texas Rangers turned over evidence gathered during an investigation that ensued when a formal complaint against Paxton, the state’s top legal officer, was lodged in April by Texans for Public Justice, an Austin-based government watchdog group. Paxton was indicted by a Collin County grand jury on July 28. Court proceedings were moved from Collin County to Tarrant County because of Paxton’s closeness to the courts in Collin County. Bring on the hurricanes!

T

he day we finalized our trip to Hawaii to celebrate 40 years of wedded bliss, a trio of hurricanes immediately made a beeline for the islands. I don’t really buy into global warming ideology. The American coastlines were supposed to be under 10 feet of water years ago and polar bears should have migrated to ON YOUR Kansas by now. Certainly, we aren’t helping the MARK environment by spewing industrial funk into the air. However, I’m not Mark K. Campbell so sure that my asthma inhaler was the cause of a rise in Tibetan temperatures, but the swapping out of a new propellent did make my albuterol rise in price from $5 to $30. So, there’s that. Anyway, the Pacific Ocean is churning right now – whether from asthmatics or Hummer exhaust is irrelevant concerning my vacation for which, of course, I did not buy insurance to protect. The Bride and I like Hawaii, mainly Kauai. We just hope it’s still there come October if hurricanes keep zeroing in. At one time, there were three storms in the ocean: Ignacio, Jimena, and Kilo – all Category 4s. That’s the second worst category and can cause “catastrophic damage” which are words almost no one wants to hear on vacation. Actually, according to the Internet – which can’t possibly be wrong – the ‘K’ storm could’ve been named Kevin. I can’t imagine something destructive being named Kevin. Heck, it’s one of the Minions. However, Kilo topped Kevin because names are chosen based on whether storms are Eastern North Pacific or Central North Pacific. So, the next storm will either be Linda (EN Pacific) or Loke (CN Pacific). I once knew a Linda who was mean, but I’m really worried about Loke which is far to close to Loki, Thor’s evil brother. If Loke/Loki threatens, I’m gonna check on that insurance. Mark K. Campbell is the News editor and is also a tad concerned about the possibility of a “Marty.”

LETTER TO THE EDITOR An answer to “Why is there a war on cops?”

weekend just for the sake of killing a police officer. As a retired military police officer, city police officer, first responder firefighter, and Tarrant County deputy (27 years) respectfully, I took this senseless murder personally. Numerous media outlets ask the same question, “Why is there a war on cops?” May I please answer that rhetorical question in brutal frankness?

Dear Editor: Once again as a sad reminder of the country and society we live in, a stark reality of death hits home this time with the cold blooded execution style murder of a Harris County deputy sheriff in Houston this

What do Michael Brown, Christian Taylor, and Sandra Bland all have in common with one another? They all died violently at the hands of police in the performance of their lawful arrest duties with the exception of Ms. Bland who killed herself in jail. President Obama, Attorney General Holder, and even the governor of Missouri lauded gang banger Michael Brown at his funeral. To add insult to

injury, the city of Ferguson, Missouri has placed a permanent memorial on a city street to honor Brown. Taylor – who was seen vandalizing cars and charged at the officer before being shot – was lionized by the city of Arlington, the police chief, and other school leaders as a great kid. And Ms. Bland, who disobeyed a state trooper’s order, talked with vulgarity towards the officer, flipped a lit cigarette

at the trooper’s boot, and later took her own life in jail, had the city of Prairie View rename a city street in her honor. All three police officers were cleared of any criminal homicide, but their careers are ruined with their commanders throwing them under the bus to protect their own hides from political backlash. The bottom line is these human vermin who claim open season on men and women who

wear a badge know full well they will be martyred by their family, community, and, yes, even the president of the United States. And please by all means, it's never “perpetrator” anymore; these law breakers now have the proper noun as “Gentlemen”! That is precisely why there is a “war on cops.” Joseph Bryan Fort Worth

Hornets punish Pirates in season opener Azle almost flawless in new QB’s debut BY MARK K. CAMPBELL Hornet head football coach Devon Dorris could hardly have drawn up a better beginning for the 2015 Hornets. Azle (1-0) headed to Granbury and won 49-7. AHS scored on six of its seven first possessions as new quarterback Nick Davis had a hand in four of the first five tallies. The Hornet offense did not turn the ball over and built a 42-0 lead entering the final period, allowing scads of players to get varsity playing time. About the only thorn was 143 yards on 15 penalties. Azle’s quick start had Dorris saying, “It was good to see; we came out to play.” He also had high praise for Davis, a senior move-in from New York. Davis was impressed by the scope of Texas football; Dorris said that he “did a good job of leading our offense.” Davis began the season with an 18-yard TD strike to Aric Brazell then followed that up with touchdown runs of 4 and 6 yards. Those scores allowed Azle to reach the break ahead 21-0. The killer for the Pirates was the third quarter where AHS doubled its score. Workhorse Chase Smith, a bruising veteran, worked over Granbury for 177 yards on 20 carries, 8.9 yards per tote. He scored two of those three third quarter TDs, on runs of 1 and, on his final carry of the night, 49 yards. In between, Davis threw his second TD pass to Bryce Gum, 57 yards. The QB’s final numbers:

9-of-12 for 189 yards, 2 TDs and no interceptions. Dorris said Davis’ on-field enthusiasm was infectious. “It was fun to see the kids excited and celebrating together,” Dorris said. “You want that kind of enthusiasm as a team.” New kicker Alex Quevedo – a “weapon,” Dorris said – went a perfect 7-for-7 on extra points. For the night, AHS piled up 514 total yards – 304 on the ground and 210 passing. This year’s squad is not the bullying running team of last year, the coach noted. “We’re happy to have receivers that open up the running game; we’re not the power team we were last year,” Dorris said. Gum led receivers with 82 yards on just 2 catches. Trey Ramos – a two-way player who also had 4 solo tackles – snagged a team-high 3 passes for 69 yards. The Hornet defense permitted only 270 yards. Pacing the squad was Seth Bell with 13 tackles followed by Thomas Widder with 8 and 7 from Zach Petter. Despite the super showing, Dorris said there is room for improvement – especially with Waxahachie’s “complicated offense passing scheme” coming up this week. “Our defense will have to prepare for a team with great athletes that can throw and catch,” he said. Azle might play even better. “You always see the greatest improvement between week one and two,” Dorris said. That’s bad news for Waxa- Trey Ramos swats aside a would-be tackler in Granbury. The senior team leader caught three passes for 69 yards and, defensively, recorded four solo tackles. MORE PHOTOS, STATS ON 14-15A. Photo courtesy Richard Spraggens hachie if it happens.

Tough tournament helping ladies prepare for district 5-5A begins Sept. 11 against WF Rider BY MARK K. CAMPBELL With district play on the horizon, the Lady Hornet volleyball team capped off its tournament season with a trip to Euless Trinity. That event was packed with talented squads. But before those clashes, Azle hosted Mineral Wells Aug. 25. AHS swept the visitors 2512, 25-15, 25-18. Logan Graham got 10 of the Lady Hornets’ 23 kills. Where Azle especially shone was in serving where AHS notched 9 aces. Hannah Walker had 3 of them while Juliann Boiles, Sarah Campoli, and Graham had 2 apiece. Graham capped her nice evening with a team-high 3 blocks. At Trinity, Azle opened with the hosts and lost in 3 games. The highlight for AHS was a trio of blocks by Campoli and a pair of aces by Graham. Next in pool play was a battle with Granbury; the Lady Hornets tumbled again. Kaitlyn Ford’s 11 digs was tops. The final pool game was a loss to Duncanville. Walker killed 5 balls, Ford 4, and Graham 3. AHS played exceptional defense with 50 digs – led by Boiles with 13 and Ford with 12. In bracket play Aug. 29, Azle opened with a 3-2 victory over Haltom. The 20-15, 22-25, 26-24, Sophomore libero Katelyn Brothers passes a ball. The Lady Hornet had four digs in 25-13, 15-13 comeback win a sweep of Mineral Wells Aug. 25. Photo by Mark K. Campbell allowed for some gaudy num-

Six girls reached double digits in blocks as AHS tallied a remarkable 104: Boiles (20), Ford (19), Tristen Rush and Campoli (15), Payton Geary (12), and Rachel Kay (11). Graham and Walker patrolled the net, blocking 4 and 3 balls, respectively.

Next Azle swept Abilene as Graham (6), Walker (5), and Rush and Campoli (3) led in kills. Abilene sent the Lady Hornets home with a 0-3 loss. Next up for AHS is a home game against Crowley (Sept. 4) and a trip to Grandview (Sept. 8). District starts Sept. 11 at home agaist WF Rider.

Racers kick off new XC season The 2015 cross country season began at the Cowtown Invitational, and the Azle boys lived up to their preseason hype. With Saginaw Chisholm Trail, Azle is the projected district frontrunner. The Hornets finished fifth in the opening meet, trailing only 6A or state-ranked teams. With 163 points, AHS held off Chisholm Trail – next at 180. The JV finished third, prompting Coach Keith Boenisch to say, “Both groups ran very well. This meet was filled with very good runners and

teams.” Veteran Chris McGill paced Azle, taking eighth in 16 minutes, 54 seconds over the 5,000 meter distance. The Lady Hornet varsity finished ninth out of 17 teams and the girls JV was third. Coach Melody Dennis said, “I thought we competed well for our first meet, and we didn’t concede anything to the 6A schools.” Dennis lauded the efforts of Hadassah Marquart, Kylie Fonville, and Abby Kortokrax – Azle’s top three finishers at Haltom.

Movie Man

Azle News Wednesday, September 2, 2015

How things went and how things are gonna go A few times a year, the movie slate is really bad. This is one of those weeks, so that’s when the Movie Man takes the time to review his summer film predictions and map out the rest of the year. Summer guesses There’s always a hit that comes out of left field. And there’s a sure-fire thing that misses. Here’s how the Movie Man guessed what the top 10 movies of the summer of 2015 would be: 10. Pixels (MM #1150, 6) 9. Ant-Man (MM #1149, 7) 8. Tomorrowland (MM #1144, 5) 7. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (MM #1158, 8) 6. Fantastic Four – (MM #1152, 3) 5. Ted 2 – (MM #1146, 1) 4. Minions – (MM #1148, 6) 3. Jurassic World – (MM #1144, 7) 2. Inside Out – (MM #1145, 7) 1. Avengers: Age of Ultron (MM #1138, 7) And here’s the actual top moneymakers over summertime (some of these are still making money, so the Movie Man computed the neighborhood they’ll finish in): 10. San Andreas – (MM #1142, 5) $151 million 9. Mad Max: Fury Road – (MM #1140, 6) $153 million 8. Straight Outta Compton – (MM #1153, 7) $173 million, projected 7. Pitch Perfect 2 – $184 million 6. Ant-Man – $185 million, projected 5. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation – $185-$190 million, projected 4. Minions $335 million, projected 3. Inside Out $350 million,

projected 2. Avengers: Age of Ultron $458 million 1. Jurassic World $640 million The thought process Back in late April, the Movie Man gave way too much credit to Seth McFarlane. The first Ted (2012, MM #989, 3) made ridiculous money – $219 million. Fortunately, the world woke up and avoided Ted 2 (almost certainly Worst of Year); it paled in comparison to the original at $81 million. Adam Sandler must be done; the Movie Man thought he might have some life left, but Pixels was never embraced and will end up out of the money with a take of about $70 million. Tomorrowland looked promising, especially in 3-D. But it just never gained momentum and stalled at $93 million. Then there’s Fantastic Four. The Movie Man bought into the interesting trailer. But the film – dised by director Josh Trank the day before it was released – was very poor. It’s gonna stop around $55 million and forever be known as the big movie that went very bad. The Movie Man did not have

Movie Man Nos. 10-7 on his list at all. Straight Outta Compton was a surprise, but no one saw the crazy take of Pitch Perfect 2. What’s unique about those two? No animation, no superheroes, no dinosaurs, and no mass spectacle. The Movie Man got the top four right, just in the wrong order. Jurassic World’s acceptance was gargantuan; it sits No. 3 all-time with Age of Ultron No. 8. On the horizon The Movie Man will head for these movies for the remainder of the year. (Of course, sometimes film release dates get moved and other times the Movie Man

changes his mind.) Sept. 4 – War Room. The brothers churning out religiousthemed movies are making a fortune. Sept. 11 – The Visit. A horror comedy could be fun. Sept. 18 – This is a week with at least three good releases. The Movie Man will likely see Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials over Johnny Depp’s much-lauded Black Mass gangster movie and Everest. Sept. 25 – Hotel Transylva-

nia 2. (But The Intern preview with Robert De Niro is cool.) Oct. 2 – The Martian. Oct. 9 – The much movedaround (uh-oh) Pan. Oct. 16 – Two potentially great movies come out this date. It’s hard to pass on the Tom Hanks/Steven Spielberg drama Bridge of Spies. But horrormeister Guillermo del Toro has made a film he’s always wanted to make, Crimson Peak. Tough call here. Oct. 23 – Probably The Last Witch Hunter even though the Movie Man has a wealth of knowledge about Jem and the Holograms. Oct. 30 – Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse, another horror comedy. Nov. 6 – Spectre. The next James Bond movie looks fantastic. Nov. 13 – Yet another remake of Friday the 13th or a dip back to the computer-generated Peanuts (with a trailer that’s not exactly a knockout). Nov. 20 – Mockingjay – Part 2, the final installment of The Hunger Games.

Working on Labor Day history A near-riot and historical debates: Here's how the holiday was created BY MARK K. CAMPBELL Ah, Labor Day. Or as it's known today: “the unoffi cial end of summer via a three-day weekend.” But it wasn't always that way. The concept You can thank unions for the holiday. The fi rst Labor Day parade – “a monster labor festival” – was held Sept. 5, 1882 in New York City. It was also nearly the last Labor Day Parade. The event was organized by the Central Labor Union to exhibit “the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations.” According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the holiday “constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and wellbeing of our country.” Back in ’82, local unions sold 20,000 tickets to that fi rst parade. Since workers would lose a day's pay to participate, organizers were concerned about the turnout. The parade began with just a sprinkling of workers – so few that crowds along the sidewalk began jeering them. NYC cops, in columns and on horseback with clubs, were leery of a riot. That didn’t happen thanks to a last-minute arrival. Things changed abruptly when the Jewelers' Union arrived. And not only did they bring 200 workers. The JU also had a band. Playing “When I First Put This Uniform On” from Patience, an opera by Gilbert and Sullivan, the jewelers saved the day – and the future holiday. Soon, everyone fell in behind the band, including once-taunting spectators. Eventually, 10,000 workers showed up to hear speeches, attend a dance, and watch fi reworks. It was such a hit that other cities took notice.

Labor Day bandwagon. While some cities acknowledged the holiday in 1885-86, it was Oregon – acing out New York – that became the fi rst state to pass a law offi cially declaring a Labor Day; that happened Feb. 21, 1887. Four more states joined in – Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York – the same year. By 1890, Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania also okayed the holiday. Finally, on June 28, 1894, the holiday became recognized federally, on the fi rst Monday of September, thanks to a bill authored by a South Dakota senator. Battle of the founders Who actually originally proposed the holiday is up for debate by two guys who also have similar sounding names: Matthew Maguire, a machinist and Peter McGuire, carpenter. McG's argument stems from being the general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters. He suggested honoring those who “from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.” However, recent research, according to dol.gov, points toward Mag as the originator. The secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in New Jersey, Mag pitched the holiday back in 1882 to the Central Labor Union. He even organized a committee to plan a demonstration and a picnic. Either way, the “workingman's holiday” was born.

Making it official And, of course, it didn't take The holiday today politicians long to jump on the In past decades in Texas, La-

Conservation Level Lake Bridgeport Eagle Mountain Lake Richland-Chambers Res. Cedar Creek Lake Lake Arlington Lake Benbrook Lake Worth bor Day marked the “end of summer” because school began the next day. The holiday is now marked by car sales, last minute vacations, and the fi nal time to wear white if you're fashion conscious. This is one of the years that Labor Day comes as late as it can, Sept. 7. There's plenty going on during the holiday – just not much in the way of its origin, in part because of the decline in union membership. While (non-agricultural) membership peaked in America in 1945 at 35 percent, it is eroding today. In Texas in 1968, 13.3 percent

of workers were in a union. By 2014 that number had dwindled to 4.9 percent. New York remains the state with the greatest number of union members at 25.6 percent. Alaska is next at 22.7 followed by Washington at 17.1 percent in 2014. Wonder what Maguire or McGuire would think of that?

Few things are more inspiring than the American flag. Labor Day is a chance to proudly display your love of the Stars and Stripes – in windows or on doors. Remove the fl ag and post it prominently in your home or business. Displaying the fl ag on Labor Day shows support and respect for the sometimes back-breaking toil it took from generations of Americans to make our country the one immigrants still fl ock to today. And hang on to this fl ag; you can put it with another that we’ll print on Nov. 4. You can honor America’s soldiers by joining the fl ags on Wednesday, Nov. 11 – Veterans Day.
